One of the strongest earthquakes to hit Russia?

The magnitude 8.8 quake struck at 8:24 am (2304 GMT Tuesday) off Petropavlovsk on Russia's remote Kamchatka peninsula and was one of the 10 biggest recorded, according to the USGS. The quake occurred approximately 250 kilometres from Hokkaido, Japan’s northernmost island.

As per reports, this was one of the strongest earthquakes ever recorded to strike Russia's sparsely populated Far East early. It caused tsunamis of up to four metres (12 feet) across the Pacific and sparked evacuations from Hawaii to Japan.

4ft-high tsunami wave hits Hawaii as emergency management department officials urge residents to take action

A wave of 4ft (1.2m) has hit Hawaii, according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre. Some 12 minutes were recorded in between the waves.

Josh Green, governor of Hawaii, said the island state was yet to see a “wave of consequence”.“We still have not seen any wave activity come past the Big Island. That’s important. Until we see what happens on the Big Island, we won’t feel we’re in a position to start saying that we’re in the clear,” he says.

What about aftershocks?

As per reports, on Wednesday, after the 8.8 magnitude earthquake, at least six aftershocks further rattled the Russian Far East, including one of 6.9 magnitude and another listed at 6.3.

Wednesday's quake was the strongest since 1952 in the Kamchatka region, the regional seismic monitoring service said, warning of aftershocks of up to 7.5 magnitude.

Mexico warns population to avoid Pacific beaches after tsunami alert

Mexico mobilised authorities at all levels of government to keep its population away from Pacific beaches due to a tsunami warning Tuesday, after a powerful 8.8 magnitude earthquake struck eastern Russia.

The Mexican Navy warned that strong currents are expected at port entrances from Baja California in the northwest to Chiapas in the south of Mexico.

Russian mayor says 'everyone' on tsunami-hit islands evacuated

The mayor of Russia's northern Kuril Islands district said that "everyone" there had evacuated to safety following a tsunami which caused flooding and swept away buildings.

"Everyone was evacuated. There was enough time, a whole hour. So everyone was evacuated; all the people are in the tsunami safety zone," Mayor Alexander Ovsyannikov said at a crisis meeting with officials.

The epicentre of this strong quake, as per the United States Geological Survey (USGS) was located 133 km southeast of Petropavlovsk‑Kamchatsky in Russia, at a depth of 74 km.

Russia's 8.7 magnitude earthquake on Wednesday (Jul 30) triggered an emergency evacuation at the Fukushima nuclear plant in northeast Japan. As per reports, all workers of the stricken nuclear plant were evacuated to avoid a 2011-style meltdown of the facility. "We have evacuated all workers and employees" at the Fukushima Daiichi plant, a spokeswoman for plant operator TEPCO told news agencies, adding that no "abnormality" had been observed.

Russia's geophysical service said that earthquake off Kamchatka was the strongest since 1952. The epicentre was located about 136 kilometres east of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, in Russia’s far eastern Kamchatka Peninsula, at a depth of 19 kilometres beneath the seabed.
