Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Rajiv Kumar on Tuesday (Oct 15) dismissed claims made by Congress after losing in&nbsp;Assembly elections in the Indian state of Haryana, alleging that the Electronic Voting Machines (EVM) could be tampered with like pagers.&nbsp;

The CEC said that the battery of an EVM is like a calculator battery, adding that the machines are safe and robust.&nbsp;

Kumar also&nbsp;asked how much more transparent can one be, noting that the machines are safe.&nbsp;

After the Haryana polls were concluded, Congress alleged tampering of EVMs for some seats where machines with varying battery strength gave out different results.

"It (EVM) has a single-use battery which can be used for 5-7 days. It's like a calculator battery. We have made a provision. It is initially marked as 99 per cent and charged. It can differ based on the difference of voltage. When it drops to 5.8 per cent, it gives a signal that it is about to die," Kumar said, adding that the system is foolproof.&nbsp;

He stressed that the batteries are put on the day the EVMs are commissioned and not before. The EVMs are not connected, hence they can't be hacked into, he added.&nbsp;

"I have explained it many times. It will take time but let me explain again. Before 5-6 months of polls, checking begins. At every step of the EVM process, political parties or their agents are present. We put in a new battery and after sealing there are signatures of the agent. There's a three-layer of security including CAPF and observers. The process is videographed. The EVM numbers are also shared. When polls are over, even then we take signatures. How much more can we show? On counting day, it goes inside barricading. There's a provision for objecting to any of this at any stage which has not happened," Kumar said.&nbsp;

He further highlighted that the different results in the past 15-20 elections do not imply faults with the machines but rather reflect the voters' choices.

In an endearing tale from India’s Kerala, a UAE-based billionaire came forward to help a woman from his native place.&nbsp;The Lulu Group chairman MA Yusuff Ali repaid&nbsp;the Rs 8 lakh loan of a Kerala woman, who was evicted from her house due to an unpaid loan.

Ali not only repaid the entire loan amount but also instructed his team back in India to offer her Rs 10 lakh. The story of Sandhya being thrown off her house made local news and moved thousands of people who could identify her plight. It was then, that the story reached Lulu Group’s chairman and he provided Sandhya with assistance.

According to local media, Sandhya and her husband took a loan from a private institution in 2019 for the construction of their home in North Paravur, Kerala. The couple took a loan of Rs 4 lakh from Manappuram Finance, a Kerala-based Non Banking Finance Company (NBFC).

However, in 2021, things didn’t go well between Sandhya and her husband, and the latter left her and their two children. The repayment of the loan stopped thereafter. Gradually, the loan amount spiralled to nearly Rs 8 lakh with interest.

Manappuram Finance started foreclosure proceedings after the repayments stopped. The NBFC said that Sandhya had been given four warnings after loan repayments stopped three years ago.&nbsp;

Recently, when Sandhya returned to her home, she was shell-shocked to find that NBFC officials had entered her house and replaced her locks, officially evicting her and her two children. They did not even allow Sanhdya to take their belongings from inside the house.

The plight of Sandhya and her children, stranded on the road sparked outrage among locals. Her story was soon picked up by local media and reached MA Yusuff Ali, the chairman of Lulu Group, who immediately stepped in to help the family.

Sandhya expressed her gratitude to the billionaire, saying that she and her children would have been in a dire state had it not been for Yusuff Ali.

Air India Express issued a statement, saying, several operators have been targeted by threats from an unverified social media account.

"Flight Al127 operating from Delhi to Chicago on October 15, 2024, was the subject of a security threat posted online and, as a precautionary measure, has landed at Iqaluit Airport in Canada," the airline said.

"The inconvenience to customers is sincerely regretted. Air India is extending all cooperation to authorities in identifying the perpetrators of such threats to ensure that they are held accountable for the disruption and inconvenience caused to passengers, and will consider legal action against those responsible to recover damages incurred by the airline,” it added.

It was further scheduled to go to Bengaluru after a brief halt in Ayodhya, according to the officials.

Ayodhya airport director Vinod Kumar said the plane came from Jaipur, adding that there was an emergency situation at the airport.&nbsp;

‘Miss you, says i-Pill’ Zepto notification to woman sparks outcry on internet

The Supreme Court said on Tuesday (Oct 15)&nbsp;during a hearing in the Kolkata rape and murder case of a trainee female doctor at RG Kar Hospital and College&nbsp;that the report filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) indicated that it&nbsp;is&nbsp;probing the role of "others" involved in the case.

In its fifth status report, the CBI indicated that the agency is probing the role of "others" in the case.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta appeared on behalf of the CBI and submitted the latest status report to the bench, comprising Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra.

The apex court directed the West Bengal government to inform about steps being taken so that civic volunteers are not posted in hospitals, police stations, and schools after the CBI named Sanjay Roy as prime accused in the case.&nbsp;

The court asked the state government to provide details of the recruitment process of civic volunteers, as the prime accused, Sanjay Roy, is also a volunteer.&nbsp;

CBI probing 'role of others' in Kolkata rape and murder case, SC told

The Mumbai Police on Tuesday (Oct 15) arrested a fourth suspect in connection with&nbsp;the murder of NCP leader Baba Siddique. The accused, identified as Harishkumar Balakram, was arrested from the Baharaich district of Uttar Pradesh on charges of allegedly supplying money and arranging logistics for the murder.

According to the police, Balakram was working as a scrap dealer in Pune and was a vital part of the murder conspiracy.

"In connection with Baba Siddiqui's murder case, Harishkumar Balakram (23), a resident of Bahraich, Uttar Pradesh, has been apprehended," the Mumbai Crime Branch said.&nbsp;

"He was working as a scrap dealer in Pune. He was part of the conspiracy, he supplied money and other logistics. Further investigation is underway," it added.&nbsp;

The police had earlier arrested three accused—Karnail Singh from Haryana, Dharamraj Kashyap from Uttar Pradesh, and Pravin Lonkar from Pune.

While Singh has been sent into police custody, Kashyap claimed that he is a minor, prompting the court to order an ossification test. Meanwhile, Lonkar is believed to be the brother of Shubham Lonkar who allegedly wrote the Facebook post claiming that the Lawrence Bishnoi gang&nbsp;was behind the murder.&nbsp;

The post seemingly quoted renowned poet Ramdhari Singh Dinkar and claimed responsibility for the murder.&nbsp;

"Salman Khan, we did not want this war, but you harmed our brother. Baba Siddique’s chapter has closed today, or he was once under the MCOCA Act with Dawood," read the Facebook post.&nbsp;

"We have no enmity with anyone, but whoever helps Salman Khan and the Dawood gang will have to settle their accounts," it added.&nbsp;

The Mumbai Police said it was verifying the authenticity of the social media post and refrained from making any concrete assertion.&nbsp;

"We have seen the viral social media post. Verifying authenticity and context,'' a senior police officer said.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Tuesday (Oct 15) announced the dates for the upcoming&nbsp;Legislative Assembly Election in the states&nbsp;of Maharashtra and Jharkhand. The announcement comes days after the elections were successfully organised in Haryana and Jammu and&nbsp;Kashmir by the Indian poll body.&nbsp;

<h2>Maharashtra election date</h2>

While Maharashtra will go to polls in a single phase, Jharkhand will have a two-phase poll process, with the results set to be announced on November 23.&nbsp;

The western Indian state of Maharashtra will go to polls on November 20 with the last date of securing nominations being October 29. The last date of withdrawal of candidature will be November 4.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, the voters in the eastern Indian state of Jharkhand will cast their votes in two phases on November 13 and November 20. The last of securing nomination for the first phase is October 25 while for the latter it is October 29. The candidates can withdraw their names for both phases on October 30 and November 1 respectively.&nbsp;

"1,86,00 polling stations will be set up in Maharashtra, while over 29,000 polling stations will be set up in Jharkhand. Around 96 million people are eligible to cast their vote in Maharashtra, while 26 million will go to poll in Jharkhand," said Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar.&nbsp;

Kumar added that "every senior citizen above 85 can vote from home" and they will be entitled to their privacy as well during the vote. However, videography of the process will be done for proof.&nbsp;

Delhi’s air quality has dropped to the ‘poor’ category, urging the authorities to implement Stage I of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP). The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has enforced the restriction in the entire National Capital Region (NCR).

According to the latest recorded Air Quality Index (AQI) bulletin by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the national capital has recorded a concerning daily average AQI of 234, forcing the governments to implement measures to curb pollution in Delhi, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan.

“The Sub-Committee unanimously decided that all actions as envisaged under Stage-I of GRAP—‘Poor’ Air Quality (DELHI AQI ranging between 201-300)—be implemented in right earnest by all the agencies concerned, from 8:00 AM on October 15 in the NCR,” CAQM said in a statement.

According to the air quality standards, there are six categories: good (0-50), satisfactory (51-100), moderate (101-200), poor (201-300), very poor (301-400), and severe (401-500). AQI above 300 is considered hazardous and can lead to health issues.

<h2>What is GRAP 1?</h2>

Authorities will enforce a 27-point action plan in Delhi and the neighbouring areas to tackle the problem and improve the city’s air quality.

Under Stage 1 of GRAP, restrictions will be imposed on construction and demolition activities to control dust. It will also focus on proper waste disposal and ban open burning of waste.&nbsp;

Restrictions will also be implemented on diesel generators and the burning of coal or firewood at eateries. The plan will also aim to control emissions from industries, brick kilns, and power plants.

GRAP also includes strict monitoring of vehicular pollution and improved traffic management.

Delhi government has also imposed a ban on the production, storage, sale and use of all kinds of firecrackers till January 1.

In November 2023, the government imposed a level 4 of GRAP in Delhi NCR after the air quality worsened to ‘severe’.

Last year, 1,230 such incidents were reported during the same period, making this year’s count the lowest in five years. However, there has been a considerable increase in farm fire cases from 300 cases as of October 7, according to CREAMS-Indian Agricultural Research Institute.

A notification issued by President Droupadi Murmu said, “In exercise of the powers conferred by Section 73 of the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019 (34 of 2019) read with Articles 239 and 239A of the Constitution of India, the order dated the 31st October 2019 in relation to the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir shall stand revoked immediately before the appointment of the chief minister under Section 54 of the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019.

The first of two multi-purpose vessels being built by Indian conglomerate Larsen and Toubro (L&amp;T) for the Indian Navy was launched on Monday (Oct 14) at the firm's Kattupalli shipyard, near Chennai. The ceremony was presided over by Chief of the Naval Staff, Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi. The ship has been named ‘Samarthak’ which means ‘supporter’ and is synonymous with the multi-dimensional role that the platform is expected to perform.&nbsp;

Launching is the ceremonial event where the ship is moved from the dry dock to the water for the first time. Henceforth, the ship will undergo sea trials where its various systems and sub-systems will be tested. Usually, the ships are formally inducted (commissioned) into the Navy after several months and phases of rigorous testing at sea.

The Indian government has ordered six Canadian diplomats to leave the country, according to a circular issued by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Monday (Oct 14) evening.&nbsp; Charge d'Affaires, Stewart Wheeler, is among the six officials asked to leave India by or before 11:59 pm local time on Saturday (Oct 19).&nbsp;

The development comes hours after the Narendra Modi administration withdrew its High Commissioner, Sanjay Verma, and other targeted officials from Canada as Ottawa linked them to the&nbsp;killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

New Delhi said it had lost all faith in the liberal government of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau that has actively tried to butcher the diplomatic ties.&nbsp;

"We have no faith in the current Canadian Government's commitment to ensure their security. Therefore, the Government of India has decided to withdraw the High Commissioner and other targeted diplomats and officials," read a statement by the ministry.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Therefore, the Government of India has decided to withdraw the High Commissioner and other targeted diplomats and officials," the statement added.

It was also made clear that India reserves the right to take additional measures in response to what it perceives as the Trudeau government's "tacit support for extremism, violence, and separatism directed against India".

Quizzed about the decision by the Indian government, Wheeler iterated that the Trudeau government had provided enough evidence related to the case.&nbsp;

Restless crowds, some people armed with sticks and iron rods,&nbsp;roamed the streets, while shops were set on fire as tension escalated in Bahraich, Uttar Pradesh, on Monday, a day after a 22-year-old man was killed in communal violence during a Durga idol immersion procession.

Police have booked a man and detained around 30 people in connection with the violence in the Mahrajganj area of Mansoor village when a Durga idol immersion procession passed through on Sunday. Around half a dozen people were injured in stone pelting and firing.

There were protests at several places and slogans raised against police and administrative officials, even as police forces conducted a flag march&nbsp;in the area. Black smoke billowed into the sky from some shops, houses, and vehicles set ablaze.

Officials said Uttar Pradesh Home Secretary Sanjeev Gupta and Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) Amitabh Yash have reached the spot to take stock of the situation.

“The situation is being brought under control and anti-social elements are being chased away,” Superintendent of Police (SP) of Bahraich Vrinda Shukla told PTI Videos.

Reacting to the violence, Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya posted on X, “Any conspiracy to disturb the peace and harmony of Uttar Pradesh will not be unsuccessful. Those who protect the rioters are once again becoming active, but we have to be cautious and vigilant.” “The bright future of the state will not be allowed to be tampered with,” he said in Hindi.

Maurya asserted that the culprits would be given strict punishment and victims would get complete justice. “I appeal to all citizens to maintain peace and patience,” he posted.

Senior Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra said in a post on X in Hindi: “The news of violence in Bahraich, Uttar Pradesh, and the inaction of the administration are extremely sad and unfortunate.” 
 
“I appeal to the chief minister of the state and the state administration to take immediate action, take the public into confidence and stop the violence. Strictest action should be taken against the culprits. My humble appeal to the public, please do not take the law into your own hands,” she added.

Earlier in the day, SP Vrinda Shukla said 25 to 30 people had been detained and efforts were on to bring normalcy in the affected areas.

She added that an adequate police force has been deployed.

The SP said a case has been registered against a person identified as Salman. Gunshots were fired from his house, which also functions as a shop, according to police.

Identities of those involved in the incident are being ascertained and some suspects have been detained, she said.

District Magistrate of Bahraich Monika Rani said there was a dispute during the idol immersion. The situation deteriorated after a person was shot, she said and added that given the incident, idol immersion was stopped at many places.

BJP MLA from Mahsi, Sureshwar Singh told PTI, “We are moving ahead with the last rites of the deceased person. Barely four months ago, he got married. The family members of the deceased demand that cases should be registered against those responsible and action should be initiated against them. The SHO and the in-charge of the police outpost should be suspended.”&nbsp;

Sunday’s violence was triggered by a disagreement over music being blasted from loudspeakers while the procession was passing through the area.

Ram Gopal Mishra of Rehua Mansoor village was walking in the procession when he suffered a bullet wound. He was rushed to hospital where he died during treatment, one of his family members said.

The area was fraught with communal tension after the killing. Similar processions were cancelled in Fakharpur town and some other places.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has denounced the violence and directed the administration to talk to religious organisations and get the idol immersions done on time.

He also directed police to deploy personnel at the immersion sites.

A senior officer in airport security informed that on Monday at 3.30 am, Air India received two messages on X from a user named Fazluddin Nirban regarding a bomb, stating, "6 kg of RDX and our 6 terrorists are travelling in your flight VT-AER AI 119 New York, this flight will be hijacked in next 20 min and will be blown up in the sky. Today India will cry. Pakistan Zindabad."

Immediately, the matter was informed to all concerned. In this regard, the bomb threat assessment committee (BTAC) was convened at Mumbai and Delhi and declared the threat as "specific" at about 03: 55 hrs. The said Air India flight was diverted to Delhi and landed at IGI Airport at around 4 am.

"We are investigating the origin of the message. It has been removed from the platform where it was posted. We haven't found any suspicious person or item on the flight. Simultaneously, we are also investigating the similar type of threat received regarding Indigo planes around the same time," said the officer.

After the flight landed, the details of all passengers were checked, and the entire plane was frisked by the team.

India summons Canadian envoy over ‘preposterous’ claims tying Indian diplomats to Nijjar case

Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar is expected to arrive in Pakistan’s capital on Tuesday (Oct 15), just one day before the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit.

This visit is the first by an Indian foreign minister to Pakistan in nine years, with the last visit by Sushma Swaraj in December 2015.

Despite no formal bilateral discussions being planned during the SCO event, media reports suggest that Jaishankar will attend the welcome dinner hosted by Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif ahead of the main summit scheduled for Wednesday.

The event will see participation from key regional figures, including Chinese Premier Li Qiang and Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin.

Reports indicate that local police and other security agencies will report directly to the military during this period. From 12th to 16th October, all wedding halls, cafes, restaurants, and snooker clubs in Islamabad and Rawalpindi have been ordered to remain closed.

Despite no formal bilateral discussions being planned during the SCO event, media reports suggest that Jaishankar will attend the welcome dinner hosted by Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif ahead of the main summit scheduled for Wednesday. The event will see participation from key regional figures, including Chinese Premier Li Qiang and Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin. When asked about Jaishankar’s visit, Pakistan’s Foreign Office spokesperson, Mumtaz Zahra Baloch, said, “I would like you to refer to the remarks made by the Indian Minister for External Affairs on 5th of October, in which he maintained that his visit was meant for a multilateral event and not for discussing Pakistan-India relations. But, you, know, because I’m a courteous and civil person, I will behave myself accordingly,” Jaishankar had stated. Security measures have been significantly ramped up in preparation for the summit. In a statement, Islamabad’s Inspector-General of Police, Nasir Ali Rizvi, mentioned that a “comprehensive” security plan had been devised for this crucial summit in the capital. Around 10,000 personnel, including soldiers and commandos from the Pakistan Army, have been stationed in Islamabad and Rawalpindi. A three-day public holiday has also been declared in Islamabad to ensure the safety of the delegates. Reports indicate that local police and other security agencies will report directly to the military during this period. From 12th to 16th October, all wedding halls, cafes, restaurants, and snooker clubs in Islamabad and Rawalpindi have been ordered to remain closed. Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf threatened to hold protests during SCO Summit Meanwhile, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party has threatened to hold a protest on 15th October, opposing the restrictions placed on their imprisoned leader Imran Khan, demanding that the government grant him access to his family, legal team, and doctor. “Protests during nationally significant events do not send a positive message,” said Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar.
