A source from the Chief Justice of India’s office has explained to NDTV, that “He (Chandrachud) said the statue should have the constitution in one hand and not a sword, so that a message goes out to the country that she dispenses justice according to the constitution. WION’s Akul Baiju caught up with Advocate Deepanjan Dutta of the Supreme Court and Advocate Sonam Priya of the Delhi High Court to know what this means for the country.&nbsp;

Adv. Priya: “The sword signifies protection, and the use of force to maintain peace, punishment. Such a show of strength was more important when force was needed to secure a nation’s safety and stability. Unlike the sword's formidable nature, the Constitution is dynamic and more suited to the needs of society as it stands today."

Adv. Dutta: “The transition from the sword to the constitution reflects that justice is now governed by exalted constitutional principles rather than sheer might and authority.”

WION: Some people have called removing the blindfold as ‘judicial overreach.’ Is this true?&nbsp;

Adv. Priya: “ This is not necessarily judicial overreach. Although, some might argue that courts interpreting laws too broadly. This shift also highlights justice serving its deeper purpose and addressing social inequalities. The key is finding a balance not proceeding with the laws blindly, after all laws cater adaptability with times."

Adv. Dutta: “This situation does not involve any judicial overreach. The blindfold has long symbolized impartiality in the law, but its removal suggests a legal approach that is neutral yet also informed, responsive, and empathetic to the social context.”

Jorge Rojas Rodríguez: We are planning to join forces in a strategic alliance with India in order to combat climate change, renewable energies and biofuels. Social media erupts after India's Supreme Court changes the look of Lady Justice statue

Indian Union Territory Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah's government has come under strong criticism after ignoring Articles 370 and 35a in the very first cabinet meeting of the UT's newly-appointed ministers. Sources in the government say that a resolution was passed by the Abdullah-led government on the restoration of statehood, but it did not mention anything about Articles 370 and 35a.&nbsp;

Abdullah along with his ministers is being criticised by the opposition parties in Jammu and Kashmir for only talking about statehood and ignoring Article 370. The political leaders said that Abdullah fought the election on the promise of restoration of Article 370 and statehood.&nbsp;

However, his government has conveniently ignored the issue of the special status of Jammu and Kashmir. The opposition leaders call it a betrayal on Abdullah's part as he asked for votes on the restoration of Article 370.

“It is very painful to learn that your cabinet has passed a resolution only on statehood and ignored article 370. It has been a principal stand of his party and it's very clear that Omar Abdullah is playing under the hands of BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party). If (Union Home Minister) Amit Shah and the Prime Minister have already said that they will return to statehood then why is he only talking about statehood and ignoring his main agenda? They fought the elections on Article 370 and now it seems there is a game going on between NC (National Conference) and BJP. &nbsp;He is running away from the main issue,” said Engineer Rashid, Member of Parliament (MP) Baramulla.&nbsp;

The People's Democratic Party (PDP) has also taken a dig at the Jammu and Kashmir CM for taking a U-turn on the promise he has made to the people of the Indian UT. MLA Pulwama Waheed Parra of PDP has said that statehood is already promised by Prime Minister Narendra Modi so why talk about that and ignore the issue of Article 370?

“The decision taken on August 5 2019 of revoking the special status of Jammu and Kashmir was against the wishes of the People of Jammu and Kashmir and first resolution which was promised by Omar Abdullah was to talk about Article 370, and now we have read that they have taken a resolution only on Statehood, which Prime Minister has already promised. BJP also demands the same. Kashmiris want the restoration of article 370 and unfortunately, Omar has taken a U-turn and also normalisation of the decision taken on August 5, 2019,” said Parra. &nbsp;

People's Conference chief and&nbsp;Handwara MLA, Sajad Gani Lone has also hit out at the Abdullah-led government, saying he failed to understand why this resolution should not have been reserved for the Assembly. He also said that by doing this it also trivialises these issues.&nbsp;

“Apparently the cabinet has passed a resolution on statehood. This is as per the headlines of an authentic newspaper based out of Jammu. In wonderment why should a resolution on statehood passed by the cabinet be shrouded in mystery and secrecy — that only one newspaper publishes it.

“I hope the CS of J and K has notified it as is the protocol. And I very humbly state that the will of the people of J and K is reflected in the Assembly and not in the cabinet. The Cabinet is a majoritarian institution of governance,” said Lone on social media.&nbsp;

He added, “It does not reflect all shades and opinions as per the will of the people of J and K. All across the country, to the best of my knowledge, the Assembly is the proper institution for addressing major issues like that of statehood or Article 370. When the NC Government passed a resolution on autonomy they passed it in the Assembly, not through a cabinet resolution. What has changed now. Fail to understand why this resolution should not have been reserved for the Assembly. Why are we so keen to trivialise everything? Would have loved to see which way BJP and other parties vote on statehood and on Article 370 resolution when it is presented in the Assembly.”

"And I am cutting and pasting a few lines out of the NC manifesto for 2024 Assembly elections. ‘Strive for the full implementation of the Autonomy Resolution passed by the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly in 2000. We strive to Restore 370-35A, and Statehood as prior to August 5 2019. In the interim period We will endeavour to redraft the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019, and the Transaction of Business of the Government of Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir Rules, 2019. The Jammu and Kashmir assembly, in its first list of business after elections, will pass a resolution against the centre's decision to strip the region of its statehood and special status’. The last para says it all. We are not demanding or expecting anything extraordinary. Do what you promised the people of J and K in your manifesto,” said Lone added.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, Manoj Sinha on Friday (Oct 18) allocated portfolios to the cabinet ministers in the government.&nbsp;

The order issued by Sinha said that in pursuance of rule 4(2) of the Transaction of Business of the Government of Union territory of Jammu and Kashmir Rules, 2019, 1, the Lieutenant Governor was assigned the charge of the Ministers.

The lieutenant governor's order said that Surinder Kumar Choudhary (Deputy Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir) will hold Public Works (R&amp;B), Industries &amp; Commerce, Mining, Labour &amp; Employment and Skill Development.&nbsp;

The leaders of BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India, and China) countries met for the first time in St Petersburg, Russia in 2006. After a series of high-level meetings, the first BRIC summit was held in Russia's Yekaterinburg in 2009.

BRIC group was renamed as BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa) after South Africa was accepted as a full member at the BRIC Foreign Ministers' meeting in New York in September 2010.

BRICS is an important grouping bringing together the major emerging economies from the world, comprising 41 per cent of the world population, having 24 per cent of the world GDP and over 16 per cent share in the world trade.

Earlier in September, Russian President Vladimir Putin extended an invitation to PM Modi, proposing a bilateral meeting on October 22, on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit in Kazan. During the invitation, Putin also referred to PM Modi as a "good friend."

The remarks by Putin came while he met National Security Advisor Ajit Doval on the sidelines of the BRICS National Security Advisers' meeting. Putin had a meeting with Doval at the Constantine Palace in Russia's St&nbsp;Petersberg.

Quoting President Putin, the Kremlin in a statement said, "We will be expecting Mr Modi in Kazan. I also suggest holding a bilateral meeting there on October 22 in order to close the books on our joint work in implementing the agreements reached during his visit to Moscow and outline some prospects for the near future."

"The jurisdiction of the court under Article 226 while dealing with habeas corpus is well defined and it would be unnecessary for this court to expand the ambit," the bench added. "These proceedings cannot be to malign people and malign institutions," CJI Chandrachud orally said during the hearing. The Supreme Court on Friday lifted the stay imposed by the Punjab and Haryana High Court on proceedings against jailed Dera Sacha Sauda head Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh in three cases relating to sacrilege of the holy book in 2015.

A bench of Justices BR Gavai and KV Viswanathan also issued notice to the self-styled godman on the appeal filed by Punjab government against stay on trial by High Court in the case.

In March, the Punjab and Haryana High Court stayed proceedings against Singh in the three sacrilege cases.

The cases were filed after several incidents in Bargari, Faridkot district, where the scripture of the Guru Granth Sahib, the holy scripture of the Sikhs, was allegedly desecrated and had gone missing.

The six Next-Generation Missile Vessels (NGMV) that are being built by the Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) for the Indian Navy will be propelled by US-origin General Electric LM2500 marine engines.

One Ramgopal Mishra was killed while several others were injured after a clash erupted between two communities during the Durga idol immersion procession in the Mahasi area of Bahraich district in Uttar Pradesh on Sunday.

Earlier on Thursday, Bahraich Chief Medical Officer (CMO), Dr Sanjay Kumar Sharma, said that Ramgopal Mishra, who was killed in a clash that erupted between two communities during the Durga idol immersion procession in Bahraich, died due to "excessive bleeding".

The CMO said, "The information that we have - that man died of excessive bleeding due to 25-30 pellets injuries. There are some injury marks above his left eye and on the toes. Some part of the nails of both feet is also missing."

Appealing to not spread misinformation on social media, Superintendent of Police (SP) Rural, Pavitra Mohan Tripathi, said, "To disturb the social harmony, misinformation is being spread on social media—there's been a single death in the incident and the reason for death is also clear in the post-mortem report, which is bullet injuries. I request people not to spread misinformation and also not to believe in any of such misinformation. The situation is peaceful in the district."

A Vistara spokesperson stated, “Vistara flight UK 028…was subject to a security threat received on social media. As per protocol, all relevant authorities were immediately informed. The aircraft safely landed at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, Mumbai and was taken to the isolation bay where all customers were disembarked. We are fully cooperating with the security agencies to complete the mandatory security checks.”

The Union Civil Aviation Minister, Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu, raised concerns over these incidents, condemning them as "mischievous and unlawful." He added the danger these actions pose to the safety and security of the aviation industry.

Naidu also mentioned that Mumbai Police had arrested a minor in connection with bomb threats made for three flights&nbsp;and assured that investigations are ongoing to find others responsible for these threats.

While most bomb threats turn out to be hoaxes, airlines and authorities worldwide take them very seriously. The subsequent security checks, which can take hours, often lead to delays, rescheduling, and financial losses for the airlines.

Amid the ongoing India-Canada row, India's Ministry of External Affairs (MEA)&nbsp;on Thursday (Oct 17) reiterated that after putting "serious allegations" on India for its role in the death of Sikh separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar, Ottawa&nbsp;has not given any evidence so far to prove it.&nbsp;

MEA Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, while addressing a weekly briefing, emphasised that India has made its position "very clear".&nbsp;

"You would have seen that several press releases have been issued in the last two days putting out our position, which we are very clear that since September of 2023, the Canadian government has not shared any shred of information with us. Yesterday, again, after the public, public hearing, we had again issued a statement saying that Canada has leveled serious allegations, but has so far not given any evidence to cut it up," he said.&nbsp;

The MEA spokesperson further stressed that till date, 26 extradition requests have been made by India to Canada for wanted criminals, however, no action has been taken.&nbsp;

"We have asked Canada and given them identities of people of Lawrence Bishnoi Gang. RCMP blaming us is a contradiction," he said.&nbsp;

Narang suspected that like many others&nbsp;the candidate had used&nbsp;ChatGPT&nbsp;for creating the cover letter and had sent it without proofreading.&nbsp;

Taking into consideration the uniqueness of the application, Narang crafted one possible reply which read, “Thank you for your interest in the [Job Title] position at [Company Name]. Reacting to her post on social media, some said that such applications have become common since the invention of ChatGPT.

“Artificial intelligence and human stupidity,” wrote one person, reacting to the post.

“Thanks for using ChatGPT. Please do not reply,” read a reply suggested by a user.

All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) chief&nbsp;Badruddin Ajmal&nbsp;on Wednesday (Oct 16) sparked a controversy claiming that the Parliament building and the areas surrounding it in the national capital of Delhi are built on Waqf property.

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Ajmal claimed that the area around&nbsp;Vasant Vihar&nbsp;in the national capital up to the&nbsp;airport&nbsp;has been built on Waqf property.

"There are voices and a list of Waqf properties across the world is out - the Parliament building, surrounding areas, and areas around&nbsp;Vasant Vihar&nbsp;up to the&nbsp;airport&nbsp;have been built on Waqf property. People also say that the&nbsp;airport&nbsp;has been built on Waqf property," the AIUDF said.

"It is bad to use the Waqf land without permission. They will lose their ministry very soon over this Waqf Board issue," he added.

Meanwhile, the opposition MPs have written a letter to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on gross violation of the parliamentary code of conduct during the meeting of the Joint Parliamentary Committee on Waqf (Amendment) Bill 2024.

The opposition MPs in the letter alleged numerous violations of the&nbsp;parliamentary code of conduct and rules of procedure by Committee Chairperson Jagdambika Pal during the Committee meeting held on October 14 in New Delhi.

In a letter to Lok Sabha speaker Om Birla, the opposition MPs stated: "The proceedings of the Committee were conducted in a biased and partisan manner by the Chairperson Jagdambika Pal. The invitation extended to Anwar Manippady to depose evidence before the Committee by the Chairperson is not within the scope and ambit of the Committee."

The opposition MPs also claimed that a note titled to be a presentation on the "Waqf Bill 2012 based on Karnataka Waqf Scam Report 2012" contained no observations on the Waqf Bill rather only politically motivated allegations against leaders of the Karnataka Congress including Mallikarjun Kharge.

According to the MPs, Manippady deviated from the agenda of the meeting and made a series of allegations against the Karnataka government and levelled allegations against Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge. The opposition MPs said that the allegations were irrelevant and unacceptable.

"At the beginning of his remarks, Manippady circulated a note titled "Presentation on the&nbsp;Waqf Amendment Bill&nbsp;2012 based on Karnataka Waqf Scam Report 2012" to the committee members. The note contained no observations on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill 2024,"&nbsp;read the letter.

"Instead, it was full of politically motivated allegations against leaders of the Karnataka Congress, including Mallikarjun Kharge, Leader of Opposition (Rajya Sabha). Despite vehement protests by several committee members that Kharge occupies a constitutional position of high dignity and is not present in the meeting, the witness was allowed to speak by the Chairperson. Further, he refused to provide adequate time to committee members to lodge their protests," it added.&nbsp;

The Union government has ordered the complete withdrawal of the counter-terrorist commando force NSG from VIP security duties and handing over its nine "high-risk" VIPs to the CRPF by the next month, official sources said Wednesday (Oct 16).

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has also sanctioned a fresh battalion of specially trained personnel, recently withdrawn from Parliament security duties, to be attached to the CRPF VIP security wing.

The 'black cat' commandos of the National Security Guard (NSG) provide 'Z plus' category protection to nine VIPs which include Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, his predecessor and BSP supremo Mayawati, Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, veteran BJP leader and former deputy prime minister L K Advani, and Union Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal.

The others include BJP leader and former Chhattisgarh CM Raman Singh, former Jammu and Kashmir CM and Democratic Progressive Azad Party (DPAP) president Ghulam Nabi Azad, National Conference (NC) president Farooq Abdullah and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu.

The transfer of duties between the two forces under the MHA is expected to be completed within a month, they said.

The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), which has six VIP security battalions, has been asked to absorb a seventh battalion for this purpose.

The fresh battalion is the one that used to guard the Parliament till a few months back. After a security breach that took place last year, the Parliament security was handed over to the CISF from the CRPF, a senior officer told PTI.

As part of the taking over the new task, a team of Andhra Pradesh Police was in Delhi recently for the change of its chief minister's security from the NSG to the CRPF, the sources said.

Two among these nine VIPs will also have the advanced security liaison (ASL) protocol being undertaken by the CRPF-- Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and UP Chief Minister Adityanath, as per the sources.

ASL involves an advance reconnaissance of the location to be visited by the VIP. The CRPF undertakes such a protocol for five of its VIPs including Home Minister Amit Shah, former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and three Gandhi family Congress leaders.

The plan to relieve NSG from VIP security tasks has been in the making since 2012 when NSG commanders foresaw an event where simultaneous terror attacks could be witnessed at one time on multiple centres in the country and the commandos would have to be rushed in different directions.

PTI had reported in January 2020, that after the removal of the SPG (special protection group) from the Gandhi family&nbsp;<meta charset="utf-8" />–&nbsp;Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra-- a committee of the MHA had decided to withdraw NSG from VIP security tasks.

The Union government has decided to "restructure" the NSG and use its manpower to raise and station 'strike teams' of commandos in some high-risk areas like near the Ram temple in Ayodhya and around some critical assets located in the southern part of the country.

Withdrawal of the NSG from VIP security, once done by November, will happen after over two decades since the 'black cat' commandos were drafted in this duty, a task not originally charted for it when the force was conceptualised and raised in 1984.

The NSG is celebrating its 40th raising day on Wednesday.
