<p>A lot may be at stake for the two national political parties - Bharatiya Janata Party and Indian National Congress – in the upcoming Karnataka Assembly polls, but for the Janata Dal (Secular), the battle is all about winning and not losing much. Party state chief and former Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy recently conceded that the assembly polls are a "battle for survival" for the JD(S) as the party has been out of power for nearly a decade.</p>

<p>Believe it or not, Kumaraswamy is set to play a crucial role in the Karnataka Assembly polls due this week. While his party struggles to shake off the image of the one that can at best only catapult a national party to power with its support, Kumaraswamy has been more than vocal about his confidence of rising as a king, rather than a kingmaker.</p>

<p>Kumaraswamy, popularly known as Kumaranna, was born on December 16, 1959, to former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda and his wife Chennamma in Haradanahalli, Mysore State, India. During his early years, Kumaraswamy was known to have an inclination towards the world of cinema and produced Kannada super hits like <em>Chandra Chakori</em> (2003) and <em>Jaguar</em> (2016), among others.</p>

<p>Kumaraswamy's political debut in the year 1996 was marked by his winning score in that year's Lok Sabha elections he contested from Kanakapura. Kumaraswamy continued to taste defeat until 2004 when the assembly elections resulted in a hung assembly and the JD(S) joined hands with the Congress to form a government. After JD(S)' pullout from the coalition, Kumaraswamy was invited to form a government, he assumed office as the 18th Chief Minister of Karnataka in 2006 and stepped down in October 2007 owing to what he called a 'power-sharing pact' with the BJP. BS Yeddyurappa succeeded him in November 2007.</p>

<p>Janata Dal (Secular) managed to secure just 28 seats in the 2008 assembly elections, 12 more in the year 2013 where Congress registered a landslide victory with a whopping 122 seats. This time around, opinion polls predict a hung assembly - a scenario which will again put the ball in JD(S)' court.</p>

<p>Meanwhile, the Congress and the BJP have left no stone unturned to accuse each other of secretly forming a nexus with the JD(S). Karnataka's incumbent Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, last month, ruled out all possibilities of an alliance with Kumaraswamy. He also hinted at a nexus between the BJP and the JD(S) adding that Yeddyurappa, Amit Shah, Narendra Modi and Kumaraswamy have an internal understanding to overthrow his government. Congress chief Rahul Gandhi recently called JD(S) as "BJP's B-team".</p>

<p>On the other hand, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, at an election rally in Karnataka's Tumakuru, alleged that Kumaraswamy and the JD(S) have been secretly working to save the Congress in the upcoming assembly polls. During his address, PM Modi also alluded to the Congress-JD(S) "tacit" alliance during last year's Bengaluru mayoral elections.</p>

<p>All in all, Kumaraswamy is known to have tasted both the sides - his party once sided with the Congress to form a coalition and later handed over the baton to BJP's Yeddyurappa in the year 2007. In over a decade, former prime minister's son seems to have realised the importance of rekindling and igniting the dream of assuming power rather than facilitating the same for other political parties.</p>

<p>Although Kumaraswamy is likely to emerge as a 'facilitator' again, this time around he has branded the electoral fight as a "battle for survival" and JD(S)'s win a complete necessity. Kumaraswamy has rubbished all speculations of a post-poll alliance with the BJP in case of a hung assembly. He recently noted that PM Modi's words of praise for his father and former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda doesn't leave any doors open for the BJP for a post-poll tie-up.</p>

<p>Karnataka's Mysore region is believed to have a considerable bent for the Gowda clan, former PM and Kumaraswamy's father Deve Gowda hails from the region. Kumaraswamy, like always, will try to bet heavy on the region to swing at least 30 assembly seats in his favour. The region also includes both the constituencies from where he will be contesting this year - Ramanagar and Channapatna - as well as Chief Minister Siddaramaiah's constituency Chamundeshwari.</p>

<p>While Kumaraswamy's resolve to lead his party to power seems firm and resolute, the possibility of a political minority to assume power, that too single-handedly, in a highly divided and polarised election looks far-fetched from reality. HD Kumaraswamy: Karnataka's weary kingmaker who yearns to taste power

<p>Trust Sonam Kapoor to never bore you on the red carpet. The Bollywood actress who recently got married in her hometown, Mumbai took the Cannes red carpet by a storm when she chose to wear a lehenga dress on her first outing this year.&nbsp;</p>

Sonam Kapoor takes lehenga to Cannes, turns up as a desi bride on the red carpet

<p>In a setback to Google India, the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal has upheld a tax demand on the search engine's remittances of advertisement revenue to Google Ireland Ltd.</p>

<p>The Bangalore bench of ITAT, in a 331-page order, upheld the tax department's contention that such payments are royalty and therefore subject to withholding tax.</p>

<p>Google India said it will challenge the ruling in the High Court.</p>

<p>The company had filed an appeal in the ITAT against "characterization of the payment made by it to Google Ireland Ltd in respect of the purchase of advertisement space for resale to the advertisers in India under the Google AdWords programme distribution agreements".</p>

<p>For the assessment year 2012-13, the tax department had found Rs 1,114.91 crore to have been credited to Google Ireland Ltd (GIL) without deduction of tax at source. And so, it issued a tax demand of Rs 258.84 crore.</p>

<p>In its submissions, Google India Ltd said it was a mere non-exclusive distributor/reseller of AdWords programme to the advertisers in the country. Distribution fee payable to GIL on the distribution of AdWords in India was not in relation to any 'transfer of any right' or 'right to use' any patent/invention and so cannot be taxed as royalty.</p>

<p>ITAT, however, said Google India had "access to patent, technical know-how, IPRs, trademark, the process, derivative works, brand features, etc., of the GIL".</p>

<p>"Therefore the payments of advertisement fees made by the assessee (Google India) after retaining a particular part of it to GIL is not the payment simpliciter towards the purchase of AdWord space which may be treated as business profit in the hands of the recipient but it is a payment of royalty," it ruled.</p>

<p>It went on to rule that the payment made by Google India to GIL is a payment of royalty and is an income deemed to accrue or arise in India.</p>

<p>A Google spokesperson said: "We comply with all tax laws in India and pay all applicable taxes. We will file an appeal in the High Court as this ruling is an inaccurate representation of our business operations in India. The order is also a clear departure from previous judgments on the issues and is not in line with India's double taxation avoidance agreement."</p>

ITAT says Google India should pay tax on advt revenue sent to parent

<p>A Delhi court has asked the CBI to respond to the bail plea of journalist Upendra Rai, who is under arrest for his alleged involvement in dubious financial transactions.</p>

<p>Special CBI Judge Santosh Snehi Mann directed the central probe agency to respond by May 18 on Rai’s application which has claimed that no purpose will be served by keeping him in further custody.</p>

<p>Rai, arrested by the CBI on May 3, is currently in the judicial custody.</p>

<p>The Delhi-based scribe was arrested for allegedly indulging in dubious financial transactions and getting an airport access pass made by the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) by furnishing false information.</p>

<p>In his bail application, Rai has said he was not required for further custodial interrogation since the CBI’s plea for this was rejected by the court on May 9.</p>

<p>The Supreme Court had on May 4 refused to interfere with his arrest. In his application seeking protection from arrest, Rai had claimed he was framed in the case because of his writings against an ED officer who was part of the team probing the 2G spectrum allocation scam case.</p>

<p>Prasun Roy, chief security officer of Air One Aviation Pvt Ltd, was also booked by the CBI in the case. The probe agency had carried out searches at eight locations in Lucknow, Noida, Delhi and Mumbai.</p>

<p>In its FIR, the agency has alleged that going by the value of the transactions of over Rs one lakh during 2017, Rai’s accounts received Rs 79 crore while Rs 78.51 crore was debited from it during the same period.</p>

Court seeks CBI’s response on journalist Upendra Rai’s bail plea

<p>Shiv Sena leader Uddhav Thackrey has challenged the BJP to conduct elections on ballot papers.</p>

<p>The challenge from the leader of the Alliance party has come&nbsp;amid the Opposition's allegations of EVM tampering on BJP.</p>

<p>The opposition targetted the BJP claiming that its victory in the southern state was possible because of EVM tampering.</p>

<p>Five infiltrators sneaked into Hiranagar sector probably through a tunnel on Sunday night and efforts are on to detect and neutralise them, Sharma said.</p>

<p>Referring to the killing of a BSF jawan in firing from across the border, Sharma said the sacrifice would not go in vain and assured "appropriate action" against Pakistan.</p>

<p>&nbsp"Pakistan is our hostile neighbour and tries to push terrorists and violates ceasefire regularly. BSF does no initiate (ceasefire violations) from this side but whenever Pakistan initiates, we give them a befitting response,"Sharma told reporters at the BSF headquarters in&nbsp</p>

<p>Referring to the latest incidents along the international border, Sharma said a group of five infiltrators may have sneaked in, while another attempt was scuttled.&nbsp</p>

<p>“The revenue department is likely to tell the financial services department that GST will not be levied on free banking services,” an official told PTI.</p>

<p>Amid banks getting service tax notice for non-payment of the levy on free services, the Department of Financial Services (DFS) had approached the revenue department seeking clarity on whether such services would attract GST.</p>

<p>The DFS was of the opinion that services such as the issuance of chequebooks, account statements and ATM withdrawals are free up to a certain limit and not commercial activities which cannot be brought under the ambit of GST.</p>

<p>The Indian Banks Association (IBA) on behalf of the management of banks too had made representation to the tax authorities.</p>

<p>The service tax notice for period 2012-2017 was served as tax officials were of the view that banks were not offering ‘free services’ but actually charging customers by asking them to maintain a minimum account balance.</p>

<p>Every bank offers a different slab of minimum balance to customers, based on which some free services are provided.</p>

<p>GST was rolled out from July 1, 2017, prior to which central excise and service tax was levied on goods and services.</p>

<p>Full-service carrier Jet Airways today offered fares starting as low as Rs 967 for the Udan flights which it plans to operate from next month.</p>

<p>The airline had yesterday announced the commencement of its operations under the government's regional connectivity scheme, Udan, from June 14 onwards, with the first flight to be operated on the Lucknow-Allahabad-Patna sector.</p>

<p>Jet Airways had bagged four routes in the second round of bidding in January, in which a total of 325 routes were awarded to various operators.</p>

<p>Besides Lucknow-Allahabad-Patna, the airline will also fly on the New Delhi-Nashik, Nagpur-Allahabad-Indore and Lucknow-Bareilly-Delhi routes.</p>

<p>The fares for the Lucknow-Allahabad-Patna flight under the Udan scheme will be Rs 967, while the flights on the Patna-Allahabad-Patna route will cost Rs 1,216, Jet Airways said in a release today.</p>

<p>Similarly, the ticket price for a trip on the Nagpur-Allahabad-Nagpur route has been pegged at Rs 1,690, while the Indore-Allahabad-Indore flight will cost Rs 1,914, the release added.</p>

<p>The fare for a Delhi-Nashik-Delhi flight will be Rs 2,665, it said.</p>

<p>With at least half of the seats in the Udan flights are offered at subsidised rates, the participating carriers get a certain amount of viability gap funding (VGF) - an amount shared between the Centre and the states concerned.</p>

<p>To fund the scheme, the civil aviation ministry is collecting a levy of Rs 5,000 per departure from airlines operating in major routes, including Mumbai and Delhi.<br />
The government had in March 2017 awarded 128 regional routes to five airlines for launching flights under the Udan (Ude Desh Ka Aam Naagrik) scheme, which aims at boosting air connectivity to the hinterland.</p>

<p>Under the scheme, the fares have been kept at Rs 2,500 for a one-hour journey.</p>

<p>Separatists in Jammu and Kashmir today called for a protest march to Srinagar's Lal Chowk on Saturday against Prime Minister Narendra Modi's scheduled visit to the state.</p>

It has emerged as the single-largest party after the assembly election results in Karnataka, a Congress citadel, pushing Congress to a point where if it is unable to form a government in the state, it will be reduced to just two states - Punjab and Mizoram - one one Union Territory, Puducherry.</p>

<p>The BJP has been able to achieve this feat because it has been facing one challenge after another since coming to power in 2014. The hunger to be at the top, to beat other parties and become number 1 keeps the Narendra Modi-led BJP going. It reminds me of the third installment of the famous 'Rocky' film series starring Sylvester Stallone. The film, which released in 1982, shows boxer Rocky Balboa not taking a young challenger seriously.</p>

<p>Rocky's mentor presses him for to be more focussed, but Rocky acts like a smug and the celebrity boxer is defeated by the 'hungry' challenger.</p>

<p>This is the same thing that has happened with Congress and its president Rahul Gandhi. The writing was there on the wall, the BJP was preparing hard - it was able to make inroads in rural Karnataka too - the caste arithmetic was altered, yet an overconfident and underprepared Rahul Gandhi refused to take the challenge seriously.</p>

<p>The Congress relied heavily on pleasing the Lingayats, by giving them a status of minority religion, and playing to the Kannada sentiments - they created a separate Kannada flag - but the will and determination was lacking.</p>

<p>The voting was held in Karnataka on Saturday and the state saw a record voter turnout of 72.36 per cent. Most of the exit polls had predicted a hung assembly and gave BJP an edge. The party made these predictions true and is on the way to bag more than 100 seats. The deep inroads made by the BJP in Karnataka shows its level of preparedness.</p>

<p>They had projected B S Yeddyurappa as its chief ministerial face. Yeddyurappa was allegedly involvement in a massive illegal iron ore mining scam and was even put behind bars for corruption charges and had to spend over 20 days in Bangalore's central prison. The BJP was able to overcome all that and has come so close to forming the government in the state.</p>

Opinion: Underprepared Rahul knocked down by challenger BJP in Karnataka

<p>After surging over 436 points in early trade, the BSE Sensex erased all its gains and ended marginally lower by 13 points at 35,543.94 amid poll trends suggesting that the BJP might not be able to reach the half-way mark on its own to claim government formation in Karnataka.</p>

<p>Besides, weaker global cues and sluggish rupee added to the subdued sentiments on the bourses.</p>

<p>Late selling in realty, PSU and infrastructure stocks mainly dragged the market from early highs.</p>

<p>Towards the fag-end of the session, both key indices Sensex and Nifty entered the negative terrain reacting to the reports that the Congress would offer support to the JD(S) to form the government in Karnataka.</p>

<p>Trends suggest Narendra Modi-led Bharatiya Janata party (BJP) is leading, but is still short of majority in Karnataka.</p>

<p>As per latest poll trends, the BJP was leading on 106 seats, while congress was ahead on 76 and JD(S) on 38.</p>

<p>Investors who had created huge position after early trends on hopes of BJP win trimmed their bets after the saffron party seat prospects shrank.</p>

<p>Also, the rupee slipped to fresh 16-month low of 67.92 (intra-day) against the dollar.</p>

<p>The 30-share BSE index hit a high of 35,993.53 in morning trade. Later, it met with profit-booking at higher levels and slipped in the negative zone to hit a low of 35,497.92, before settling 12.77 points, or 0.04 per cent to 35,543.94. The gauge had gained 310.44 in the previous two sessions.</p>

<p>The 50-share Nifty reclaimed the key 10,900-mark to touch a high of 10,929.20 in initial trade and fell back by 4.75 points, or 0.04 per cent, to end at 10,801.85. It touch a low of 10,781.40.</p>

<p>Meanwhile, foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) bought shares worth a net Rs 717.99 crore while domestic institutional investors (DIIs) bought shares worth Rs 687.23 crore yesterday, as per provisional data.</p>

<p>Globally, Asian markets ended mixed and European markets opened lower.</p>

Also, the rupee slipped to fresh 16-month low of 67.92 (intra-day) against the dollar. The 30-share BSE index hit a high of 35,993.53 in morning trade. Later, it met with profit-booking at higher levels and slipped in the negative zone to hit a low of 35,497.92, before settling 12.77 points, or 0.04 per cent to 35,543.94. The gauge had gained 310.44 in the previous two sessions. The 50-share Nifty reclaimed the key 10,900-mark to touch a high of 10,929.20 in initial trade and fell back by 4.75 points, or 0.04 per cent, to end at 10,801.85. It touch a low of 10,781.40. Meanwhile, foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) bought shares worth a net Rs 717.99 crore while domestic institutional investors (DIIs) bought shares worth Rs 687.23 crore yesterday, as per provisional data. <p>Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah held a press conference a short while ago stating that Congress will support the JD(S) in forming the government. <p>Aishwarya Rai Bachchan says she has often "walked away" from big films due to her adherence to schedules, something she hopes changes soon.<br />
In a video media interaction from Cannes, where she walked the red carpet for L'Oreal Paris for the 15th year, the actor said she should have been more "fierce".&nbsp;</p>

<p>"The fact that I have been very school girlish in my choices, I was very good at keeping with schedules... I have walked away from some very big films and acting opportunities because I was being very sincere to schedules," she said.</p>

Aishwarya does not regret her approach as she believes there are so many stories to be told and enough work in films to do.</p>

<p>"When I took a break with Aaradhya and even now, I get asked, 'Why don't we see more of you?' Yes, I want to do more films. I have been a little easy on my time planning.</p>

<p>"I have happily played mummy to Aaradhya and thrown work around here and there. Even now when I am offered a good script, I feel like doing but then I think, 'Let me take one more holiday this month. I will do the next one (film)'. I think this attitude needs to change."&nbsp;</p>

<p>This year, Aishwarya's name came up for three projects - "Jasmine" and the remakes of "Woh Kaun Thi" and "Raat Aur Din".</p>

<p>Director Shree Narayan Singh, who made "Toilet Ek Prem Katha", has written "Jasmine" and is expected to co-produce it with KriArj's Prerna Arora.</p>

<p>"When I heard 'Jasmine', I asked them to take it for a rewrite. So, it depends on what they do with it. It got announced before I even heard it. (When) I heard it, I requested for a rewrite. Let's see where that goes," she said.</p>

<p>Aishwarya has also been rumoured to greenlit two other KriArj projects - the remakes of Nargis Dutt's "Raat Aur Din" (1967) and Sadhana-starrer "Woh Kaun Thi" (1964).</p>

<p>"'Woh Kaun Thi' and 'Raat Aur Din' were fabulous ideas but I need to come back and hear the team out on how they want to make them and probably then make the announcements.<br />
"The originals were great ideas, but I need to see how the two directors make them for the current audience. Once that's set on the paper, we will go for it," the actor said.</p>

Gandhi launched the Congress campaign at a rally at Hosapete in Ballari district in February, and visited many temples to drum up support for the party.</p>

<p><strong>Minority status for Lingayats:</strong> The Siddaramaiah-led Congress government gave Lingayatas - one of the dominant castes in Karnataka - the status of a minority religion. The move was aimed at capitalising on the clout the Lingayats enjoy. But the voting pattern of the community doesn't seem to have favoured Congress in this election.</p>

Karnataka election results: What didn't work for Congress

<p>After soaring over 436 points in early trade, stock markets entered the negative terrain towards the fag-end today amid poll trends indicating that the BJP might fall short of simple majority in Karnataka.<br />

The benchmark Sensex gave up all gains and was trading lower by about 59 points at 35,497.92 on reports that Congress would offer support to the JD(S) to form the government in Karnataka.<br />

As per latest poll trends, the BJP was leading on 108 seats, while congress was ahead on 73 and JD(S) on 38.</p>

<p>Investors who had created huge position after early trends on hopes of BJP win trimmed their bets after the saffron party seat prospects shrank.</p>

<p>The 30-share BSE index hit a high of 35,993.53 in morning trade. Later, it met with profit-booking at higher levels and slipped in the negative zone, falling 58.79 points, or 0.16 per cent to trade at 35,497.92.<br />

The 50-share Nifty reclaimed the key 10,900-mark to touch a high of 10,929.20 in initial trade and fell back by 25.20 points, or 0.23 per cent, to trade at 10,781.40.</p>

<p>Globally, Asian markets ended mixed and European markets opened lower.</p>
