Union minister Nitin Gadkari asserted today that the departments under him have provided employment to over one crore youth since the NDA government came to power in May 2014.

Though the opposition parties are trying to attack the central government on the issue of employment generation, Mr Gadkari said, the claims made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi that his government has created lakhs of jobs are "true".

"What the prime minister has said is absolutely correct. After our government came to power under the leadership of our prime minister, my departments have awarded projects worth Rs. 10 lakh crore. And I have statistics to prove that. It has happened in sectors like highways, shipping, port, inland waterways, water resources," Mr Gadkari said.

"These departments generate a lot of direct and indirect employment. In my departments, one crore youths have been given employment," he said.

Asserting that the rate of employment generation has increased in the past four years, he said whenever there is an investment of Rs. 1,000 crore, "50 thousand to one lakh" jobs are created directly or indirectly.

While the manufacturing of equipment used in the construction of roads and buildings have doubled, the cement industry is also growing, he said.

"So one can say the industries related to these departments have grown, giving employment to many as engineers, labours, truck drivers," he asserted.

Mr Gadkari said he was in the process of collecting data to support his claims.

"We are collecting data... I can take a challenge regarding my departments. We constructed a tunnel in Kashmir where 2,000 Kashmiri youths were working. In Zoji La tunnel, more than 4,000 Kashmiri youth would be working for four years," he said.

The minister was speaking to reporters on the sidelines of an event to mark the 50th foundation day of WAPCOS, a consultancy organization and public sector undertaking under the Ministry of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation.

Mr Gadkari said he was in the process of collecting data to support his claims.

Sonali Bendre diagnosed with cancer, says 'taking battle head on'

Expressing shock at the fact that "thousands and thousands" of seats had remained uncontested in the recent West Bengal panchayat polls, the Supreme Court said on Tuesday that the grass root level democracy was not working in the state.&nbsp;

The apex court also asked the state election commission to provide exact details about such contested posts by Wednesday.&nbsp;

Out of the total 58,692 posts about 20,159 were uncontested in West Bengal Panchayat &nbsp;village, zilla parishad and panchayat samiti due to the violence that had struck the state during the polls in May this year.

"We cannot remain oblivious of this fact that such a huge number of seats were uncontested in panchayat elections in the state... What is puzzling us is that of 48,000 gram panchayat seats, more than 16,000 go uncontested," a bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra said.

"What is bothering us is that out of total 48,650 panchayat seats, 16,000 posts remained uncontested," the bench, also comprising Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud, again said, adding that same was the situation with regard to elections for the posts of zilla parishads (district level) and panchayat samitis at the villages.

The bench directed the West Bengal State Election Commission to file an affidavit by Wednesday providing exact statistics about the number of seats that went uncontested in the local bodies elections in the state.&nbsp;

Elections were held in phases for 48,650 posts in Gram Panchayats, 825 posts in Zilla Parishads and 9,217 posts in Panchayat Samitis and it has been alleged that around 34 per cent seats were uncontested.&nbsp;

The bench questioned the decisions of the state election body and said it had first extended the time limit for filing of nomination papers and took back the decision within a day.

"You (state election commission) are the guardian of law. It was vivid that so many seats were going uncontested," it said, adding "if nobody is contesting, then there will be no litigation. The fact that there were litigations and it means that everyone was aware of the fact that something was missing".

Senior advocate P S Patwalia, appearing for West Bengal unit of BJP, said violent incidents took place during the elections and people were not allowed to file their nomination papers. He also provided a district-wise break-up of the uncontested seats.

Earlier, the apex court had stayed the Calcutta High Court order asking the state election body to accept the nomination papers filed through e-mail for panchayat elections and directed the poll panel not to declare in the gazette the names of those candidates who had won unopposed.&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;

The bench, however, had then refused to stay the poll process observing that there were a plethora of judgements which have held that once the poll process has begun, it cannot be interfered into by any court.

The counsel for CPI(M) and the BJP had alleged that several of their candidates were not allowed to file nomination papers, which had led to about 34 per cent of the candidates belonging to the ruling Trinamool Congress, winning unopposed.

The court was hearing an appeal filed by the state election panel against the High Court order asking it to accept the nomination papers filed through e-mail for the panchayat elections.

The CPI(M) had claimed that many of its candidates were prevented from filing nominations by the state's ruling Trinamool Congress.

The SEC petition arrayed CPI(M) as a respondent, besides the state government, the ruling Trinamool Congress, state panchayat secretary and others. BJP was later allowed to be a party to the litigation.

Earlier, the Minister of State for Muslim Waqf and Haj, Mohsin Raza, said, "The aim of the UP government is to bring madrassas at par with other educational institutions in every sense. Till now, students in madrassas have been wearing 'kurta-payjamas' but now this dress code will make it more formal... We might also try to meet the expenses,"&nbspsaid Raza.

Stressing that it is only the BJP-led governments which have done justice with the minorities, the minister said the other political parties have been considering them as only a vote-bank.

Raza said the current dressing style of madrassa students reflects a clear demarcation between them and the students of other schools which will come to an end now.

The government's move, however, evoked a mixed reaction from the community leaders with one section welcoming it cautiously but the other questioning the need to tinker with the madrassa students traditional attire.

"We will welcome it, if it is good, but only after seeing what the changes are and with what intentions they are being brought," said UP unit president of the Jamait Ulema-e-Hind, Ashhad Rashidi, who runs a number of madrassas in Moradabad, Rampur and Bijnore.

The spokesperson for All India Shia Personal Law Board, Yasoob Abbas, however, questioned the need for bringing a change in the traditional attire worn in madrassas.

"Who has objected to the traditional attire... It is acceptable by all... We are not in favour of the government forcing a new dress for students," Abbas said.

The state government has already gone ahead with its plans to introduce NCERT books in the madrassas of Uttar Pradesh in a bid to bring their students at par with their counterparts in other schools and to modernise education in madrassas affiliated to the State Madrassa Board.

"Till now, students in madrassas wear white kurta-pyjama, which reflects a particular faith. We will very soon propose a new dress code for them," the minister said.

Raza, however, refused to elaborate as to what the new dress code would be.

Uttar Pradesh Minister of State Mohsin Raza said the current dressing style of madrassa students reflects a clear demarcation between them and the students of other schools which will come to an end now

Hours after Uttar Pradesh Minister of State Mohsin Raza claimed that the state government might "soon propose a new dress code"&nbspfor madrassa students, his senior ministerial colleague rejected the statement, saying that "the government has not formed any new policy"&nbspin this regard. Cabinet minister Laxmi Narayan Chaudhary tonight tweeted, "Madarso mein dress code ko lekar sarkar ne koi nayi niti nirdharit nahi ki hai. The case relating to the disqualification of 18 AIADMK MLAs owing allegiance to sidelined party leader T T V Dhinakaran, will come up for hearing before Justice M Sathyanarayanan of the Madras High Court today.

According to sources, the matter is listed for hearing at 4 pm on Wednesday.

On June 14, a division bench of the Madras High Court had given a split verdict on petitions challenging the disqualification of these MLAs, a ruling that maintained status quo in the corridors of power in Tamil Nadu.

The court had said that the senior-most judge after the high court's Chief Justice would hand-pick a third judge, who will hear the matter afresh. Following this, Justice S Vimala of the high court was appointed as the third judge to hear the matter.

The petitioners had then approached the apex court seeking transfer of their pleas from the high court claiming that there was apprehension of "bias".

A vacation bench of the Supreme Court, comprising Justices Arun Mishra and Sanjay Kishan Kaul, had recently refused to transfer the case from the Madras High Court and said Justice Sathyanarayanan would hear and decide the pleas filed by these MLAs challenging their disqualification by the Tamil Nadu Assembly speaker.

Tamil Nadu Assembly Speaker P Dhanapal had on September 18 last year disqualified these 18 MLAs on the ground that they had tried to pull down AIADMK government in the state.

On June 14, a division bench of the high court, comprising Chief Justice Indira Banerjee and Justice M Sundar, had delivered divergent verdicts on whether the 18 MLAs deserved to be disqualified under the anti-defection law by the Speaker for approaching the Governor and seeking the removal of Chief Minister K Palaniswami.

Delhi Police has questioned over 20 relatives of the <a href="http://wionews.com/india-news/burari-deaths-medical-board-confirms-suicide-relatives-dismiss-theory-allege-murder-148595">Burari-based family</a> in connection with the <a href="http://wionews.com/videos/wion-dispatch-diary-in-buraris-house-of-horror-gives-ghastly-details-148527">mysterious deaths</a> of its 11 members and is likely to rope in a psychiatrist to assist the investigators in the probe.

The police have ruled out the involvement of any self-styled godman so far.

Earlier, they found that the family had started following a Kondli-based godman, but nothing substantial was found on that front.

The police recovered a third register with notes about "salvation", "shunya" and "appeasing God".&nbsp;

Some loose sheets of paper were found containing notings from 2008, which indicated that Lalit Bhatia had turned towards spiritualism after his father's death that year.

Policemen questioned 20 family members including the family matriarch's eldest son, her daughter and one of her deceased daughters-in-law's sisters, all of whom denied that the family indulged in "occult", said a senior police officer.

There were rumours doing the rounds on Tuesday that 11 rods on top of the gate had something to do with the case but police ruled it out.

Police have more or less ruled out the involvement of any self-styled godman in the case and are probing it as a case of "shared psychosis". A senior officer also spoke to doctors from VIMHANS yesterday who also opined that it was a case of "shared psychosis", in which one person's delusional beliefs are transmitted to others.

Ten of the 11 members of the Bhatia family were found hanging from an iron-mesh in the ceiling on Sunday, while the body of 77-year-old Narayan Devi, the head of the family, was lying on the floor in another room of the house.

Devi's daughter Pratibha (57), her two sons Bhavnesh (50) and Lalit Bhatia (45) were also among the deceased. Bhavnesh's wife Savita (48) and their three children - Meenu (23), Nidhi (25), and Dhruv, aged 15, too were found dead.

Lalit Bhatia's wife Tina (42) and their 15-year-old son Shivam were also among those found dead. Pratibha's daughter Priyanka (33), who was engaged last month and would have married by the end of this year, was also found hanging.&nbsp;

The Crime Branch team again inspected the spot today and found a register whose earliest entries were from 2011 and had psychological musings and notes about "salvation", "shunya" and "appeasing God". There were some other papers also found which indicated that Lalit had assumed his father's alter ego and would often talk and behave like him. He would also observe 'maun vrat' sometimes.

While family members were clueless about this aspect, neighbours told police that Dhruv had often mentioned it to kids in the locality that "kaka par dada aate hain" (uncle is often possessed by grandfather's spirit).

The crime branch team also spoke to the delivery boy, who was the last person to see them alive and who had delivered 20 rotis to the family on June 30, a day before they were found hanging. He said that he had delivered 20 butter rotis on June 30 and did not find anything unusual in the behaviour of anyone.

The questioning of the family members began from 10 am Tuesday at the Burari police station.

A Crime Branch team, led by a Deputy Commissioner of Police-rank officer, today questioned deceased Narayan Devi's eldest son, Dinesh, her daughter Sujata Nagpal, deceased Priyanka's fiance at the police station.

They also questioned Lalit's wife Tina's sisters since the investigation had revealed that Lalit and Tina were the ones, who had convinced the family about performing the rituals to attain "salvation".

Some neighbours were also questioned and some distant relatives who had attended Priyanka's engagement last month were also questioned.

Tina's three sisters, who stay in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, also denied any such things and claimed that their brother-in-law and sister worshipped God like any other person and there was nothing that would point towards their involvement in "occult" practices.

Lalit's elder brother Dinesh and sister Sujata were also questioned and they also maintained that the family was not into occult or did not follow any tantrik or godmen. Dinesh told police that his younger brothers had shifted to Burari from Rajasthan 20 years ago.

Their questioning was wrapped up today since Dinesh and Sujata were supposed to leave from Delhi tonight.

Priyanka's fiance, who was also questioned, said that she was a normal woman and had never mentioned about "occult" practices.

He said that nothing in her behaviour indicated that she was thinking of committing suicide. Their was an arranged match and even when things were finalised, the Bhatia family had not carried out any rituals that would arouse suspicion, he told police.

He also said that Priyanka and he would talk often and would also discuss about their coming wedding.

These findings have led the police to believe that more than "occult", this case is about the family's psyche.

The police suspect that the family might have been suffering from "shared psychosis".

"Shared psychosis means that delusional beliefs are transmitted from one person to another. In this case, it is suspected that Lalit Bhatia, 45, was the one who had the delusion of talking to his father even after his death. And his beliefs were endorsed by other family members too," he said.

They might rope in a psychiatrist to understand the psyche of the family.&nbsp;

Burari deaths: Police question family members, rule out role of godman

A friend in need is a friend indeed. India has offered to help in the&nbsp;rescue of the boys stranded in a cave in Thailand's Chiang Rai province.

The 12 boys and their football coach, in a story&nbsp;that has gripped the world, were found after a nine-day search.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The boys and their&nbsp;coach, who found themselves stuck in the cave because of monsoon rains, have not yet been rescued. They are still in the cave.&nbsp;

And they may be stuck there for as much as another four months.&nbsp;

In a letter accessed by WION, India said, "Would be ready to offer technical expertise in the ongoing rescue of the young footballers and their coach, through an Indian company, Messr&nbsp;Kirloskar Brothers Limited which has a subsidiary in Thailand". The letter was later tweeted by the Thai Ambassador to India Sam Chutintorn who thanked India for its generous help.

Stunning us all with her recent film Raazi, Alia beautifully carried out the role of an Indian spy under the garb of a normal Kashmiri Muslim girl who happens to get married into an influential Pakistani family.&nbsp;

In an interview, Alia spoke about competition between actresses of the industry and whether it affects her. On whether she has moved ahead of her contemporaries after Raazi was well received at the box office, Alia said, “The minute you start believing that you deserve this, then there’s a problem. If you deserve something, you’ll get it. We shouldn’t try and control things.”&nbsp;

She said that she is not competing with anyone and added, “I can’t let that affect my choices. I’ll neither undervalue nor overvalue myself because there’s a certain arrogance that comes along with it. Sometimes you do it for the right reasons, sometimes you don’t.”

Alia is also very clear about the issue of the wage gap in Bollywood or Hollywood. She, however, has a very hands-down approach to the issue as she feels that actor’s reach is directly proportional to the money invested in their film and the pay that the actor receives.

Elaborating on the issue, she said, “Investing money in a film is directly correlated to the people you are bringing to the theatre. I’m not delusional that the same number of viewers who go to watch Varun’s movies will come to see my work. He has a wider reach than me. That’s why I can’t expect that the same amount of money, which is invested in his solo-starrers, is invested in mine, too. Also, it’s the subject that makes a film viable. We can’t be categorical about everything because every actor and movie is different.”

When asked if she would let go of her fees or reduce it if the content connects with her, Alia responds: “Never say never, but I won’t let go of a movie that I like because of remuneration. I’ll find a way around it. I’ll still do it because the emotional attachment to my work is way more than the monetary one.”

Apart from being involved in work, Alia has been recently spotted with boyfriend Ranbir Kapoor, who admitted that they fell in love on the sets of Brahmastra and have been dating for a bit now. He called their relationship "new" and asked for some "privacy"&nbsp;for it to grow.&nbsp;

Ahead of South Korean President Moon Jae-in's India visit, his wife Kim Jung-sook watched Aamir Khan-starrer 'Dangal' which created box office record in India after its release in December 2016. President Moon is coming to India on a three-day visit on July 8.
&nbsp;
Korean First Lady Kim watched the film with a group of Indian students. Appreciating the movie, she said there are many similarities between India and South Korea and both countries "give importance to family values".
&nbsp;
The students were elated to be with Kim Jung-sook and some of them even clicked selfies with the South Korean First Lady.
&nbsp;
Many South Korean companies are very popular in India, but the number of tourists and students are very less in comparison to Europe and the United States of America. South Korea is trying to change that and President Moon's visit is seen as a step in this regard.
&nbsp;
During his visit, President Moon will hold a summit with Prime Minister Narendra Modi where their discussions are expected to focus on economic cooperation. Having been invited by Modi, Moon will also meet with President Ram Nath Kovind on his first visit to the country, his presidential office said in a statement.
&nbsp;
South Korea's presidential Blue House added India is becoming a crucial partner for Seoul not only in terms of the economy but regarding its plans for peace and prosperity on the Korean peninsula as well.
&nbsp;
There are not many Indian students in South Korea, but those who study there say the country is very safe for foreigners. The language was initially a barrier for these students, but now they have mastered it and are very happy there. They said South Koreans are diligent and hard-working.

The Supreme Court is slated to deliver its verdict in the case involving the Delhi government and the Centre's tussle regarding administrative control over the national capital on Wednesday morning.

The top court had reserved its judgment on the plea of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government challenging the Delhi High Court's ruling, which stated that Delhi is a Union Territory and the Lieutenant Governor, its administrative head.

In November last year, a five-judge Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court observed that the AAP government in Delhi needs the Lieutenant Governor's nod to govern the national capital, but the LG cannot sit on files beyond a reasonable period.

The bench, comprising Chief Justice Dipak Misra and justices A K Sikri, A M Khanwilkar, D Y Chandrachud and Ashok Bhushan had reserved the verdict in the case after a 15-day long hearing took place.

However, the Centre told the apex court that the AAP cannot claim privileges of a state government, as Delhi is a Union Territory.

The Centre also refuted allegations of the Arvind Kejriwal-led government that the Lieutenant Governor sat on files sent by the government for their execution.

The power tussle between the Delhi government and the Lieutenant Governor has been on since the formation of the AAP government in Delhi.

Recently, Kejriwal, along with Delhi's Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia and other, sat on a nine-day sit-in strike at Raj Niwas, Delhi Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal's office-cum-residence.

Kejriwal and other ministers urged Baijal to direct the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officers working under the Delhi administration to end their "undeclared strike."

Banks' unsecured loan book has grown four times the bank credit during the past three years, helped by a rise in discretionary spending, technology-driven disbursements and lower interest rates, says a report.

Unsecured loans are the loans where individual exposures are smaller and more distributed and given without any collaterals but banks get higher margins. Typically personal loan, education loans and credit card spend fall under this category of loans.

"Between fiscals 2015 and 2018, unsecured credit - comprising personal, small and medium enterprise (SME), and credit card loans - clocked a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 27 per cent or almost four times growth in bank credit," Crisil said in a report today.

As of March 2018, outstanding unsecured loans stood at around Rs 5 trillion, accounting for 26 per cent of retail lending, compared to 21 per cent three years ago.

Growth in unsecured loans is on account of a surge in discretionary spending, increased availability of customer data, faster disbursements driven by technology, and lower interest rates in some segments.

The report said financiers are expected to focus more on this segment due to attractive yields.

Return on assets is 2.5-3 per cent for personal and SME loans, and 3-4 per cent for credit cards, compared to under 2 per cent for home loans and new passenger vehicle loans, it said, adding rising competition has led to lower rates in some segments such as personal loans.

In unsecured SME loans, rates have remained sticky, but average tenure and commissions paid to direct selling agents have increased, it said.

News brief: Big stories of the day

The Indian government has asked the messaging platform WhatsApp to curtail the spread of fake news.&nbsp;

The IT ministry has said that WhatsApp cannot evade responsibility when instances of lynching are on the rise.

At least 20 people have been killed in mostly rural villages across India in lynchings instigated by false information distributed on WhatsApp.

The company has been asked to take immediate action to curb fake news on its platform.

Facebook-owned WhatsApp in its response wrote a letter to the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology said that it was "horrified" at the lynchings.&nbsp;

It further added that they have been testing ways to curb the problem of fake news.

But the question here is, can it actually be done?

Let’s understand this step by step

End-to-end encryption

It is difficult to crack down on false messages on WhatsApp.Like Facebook, there is no way to flag an inappropriate or false message on WhatsApp.

Because the messages on WhatsApp can only be read by the sender and the receiver.Which means there is no way for WhatsApp to monitor what is being shared on the communication platform.

WhatsApp end-to-end encryption ensures only you and the person you're communicating with can read what's sent, and nobody in between, not even WhatsApp.&nbsp;

And if they start to track your messages, this would mean compromising on the privacy that WhatsApp offers at the moment? And the question is are we ready to accept that? Perhaps, no.

Whatsapp adds a new feature

The company has introduced a new feature to clam down on the fake news in WhatsApp groups. The new WhatsApp group setting allows only admins to send messages to a group.&nbsp;

Users can then open a group chat and tap on “Group Info,” tap Group Settings and find the "Send Messages" option and then select “Only Admins.”&nbsp;

This will allow only group admins to converse while other participants will receive a footer which reads that the admin has disabled others from conversing in the group. The feature is, however, for the time being, limited to only one option so the admin still cannot block individual rights of a particular person to send messages.

It promises a little better system to cut down on the spread of fake news in groups, but it’s not foolproof.

Fact checking and legal help

The company recently partnered with a fact-checking organisation, to help combat rumours on its platform.

It also plans to start a program to engage directly with Indian law enforcement officials.

Facebook-owned WhatsApp in its response wrote a letter to the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology said that it was "horrified" at the lynchings. It further added that they have been testing ways to curb the problem of fake news. But the question here is, can it actually be done? Let’s understand this step by step End-to-end encryption It is difficult to crack down on false messages on WhatsApp.Like Facebook, there is no way to flag an inappropriate or false message on WhatsApp. Because the messages on WhatsApp can only be read by the sender and the receiver.Which means there is no way for WhatsApp to monitor what is being shared on the communication platform. WhatsApp end-to-end encryption ensures only you and the person you're communicating with can read what's sent, and nobody in between, not even WhatsApp. And if they start to track your messages, this would mean compromising on the privacy that WhatsApp offers at the moment? And the question is are we ready to accept that? Perhaps, no. Whatsapp adds a new feature The company has introduced a new feature to clam down on the fake news in WhatsApp groups. The new WhatsApp group setting allows only admins to send messages to a group. Users can then open a group chat and tap on “Group Info,” tap Group Settings and find the "Send Messages" option and then select “Only Admins.” This will allow only group admins to converse while other participants will receive a footer which reads that the admin has disabled others from conversing in the group. The feature is, however, for the time being, limited to only one option so the admin still cannot block individual rights of a particular person to send messages. It promises a little better system to cut down on the spread of fake news in groups, but it’s not foolproof. Fact checking and legal help The company recently partnered with a fact-checking organisation, to help combat rumours on its platform. It also plans to start a program to engage directly with Indian law enforcement officials.

Why it is difficult to control spread of fake news on WhatsApp

The government had on Tuesday sent a notice to WhatsApp asking it to curb "irresponsible" messages on its messaging service.&nbsp

The "irresponsible" messages — fake news, rumours &nbsp— have led to the deaths of as many as <a href="http://wionews.com/india-news/5-lynched-in-maharashtra-on-suspicion-of-being-child-lifters-148227">29 people</a> in India in recent months.&nbsp

The messaging service replied to the government today, saying it was "horrified" by the "terrible acts of violence".&nbsp

"WhatsApp has sent us a reply from California. They say they've launched a setting where a group admin can decide who can send messages. They also said they're trying to see that messages aren't forwarded without reading and understanding. I appreciate this initiative," IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said.&nbsp

"We sent a notice to WhatsApp yesterday. We found that disinformation and provocative messages on WhatsApp played a major role in instigating violence. While we welcome WhatsApp, Twitter and Facebook they must also remain accountable, responsible and vigilant," he added.&nbsp

WhatsApp, in its reply, outlined steps being taken by the company to curb abuse of the messaging platform. The Indian government had told it categorically that it could not evade accountability on the issue.

WhatsApp said false news, misinformation and spread of hoaxes are issues that need to be dealt with collectively, by government, civil society and technology companies working together.

"WhatsApp cares deeply about people's safety, which is why we designed our app with security in mind...," it said in its letter to the Indian government.

The company also said it follows a two-pronged approach that includes giving people controls and information they need to stay safe, and working proactively to prevent misuse on WhatsApp.

In its detailed reply sent to the IT ministry, WhatsApp has listed out the various measures being undertaken by the platform to curb spread of false news and misinformation. These include product controls, digital literacy, fact-checking advocacy and proactive actions to tackle abuse.

"We also respond to valid law enforcement requests to help them investigate crimes. And soon, we will start an engagement program with law enforcement officials around India so they are familiar with our approach and how we can be helpful," it said.

WhatsApp said it is keen to share "best practices" on how the platform can be used by local police as a resource for their community.

The government's warning to WhatsApp came in the wake of a spate of incidents involving lynching of innocent people because of certain "fake and motivated" messages purportedly circulated on the widely used messaging app.

Last week, five people were lynched in Dhule district in Maharashtra on suspicion of them being part of a gang of child-lifters. In a similar incident in Tripura recently, two people were lynched and six others thrashed. Assam, too, witnessed a case of lynching last month on similar ground.&nbsp

Rajkumar Hirani’s biopic on Sanjay Dutt seems to have broken all box-office records and earned over 150 crore rupees in the 4-5 days since its release. It has proved not only Hirani’s abilities a filmmaker who can extract great performances from stars (nee actors) but also catapulted Ranbir Kapoor back to the front-and-centre of Bollywood, where you’re only as good as your last few films. In doing so it has been lopsided in its narrative in glorifying Sanjay Dutt and, what is personally deeply problematic, vilified the media, in a country that is the world’s largest democracy.
&nbsp;
Hirani and the producers of Sanju perhaps don’t live in the India that I inhabit. Perhaps Bollywood is cocooned in a mist of luxury, with a serious coating of fluff and make-believe. But in a country, where at least seven journalists have been killed in the last 18 months, Hirani and his ilk would do well to remember that shooting the messenger but failing to see (and perhaps propagate) that message is a great disservice to the society and the nation. This is the freedom of expression that they have, this is the freedom that this democracy affords them, the freedom that is defended vociferously by members of the fourth estate day-in, day-out.
&nbsp;
There are journalists and then there are journalists — the same tabloids that spice up the headlines are also the places where most Bollywood stories are planted, promotion deals made and paid reviews written. It is a Frankenstein created by the glitz and glamour of the multi-million dollar film industry and perhaps at the behest of a few corporates who twist it to their advantage.
&nbsp;
For most part journalism (and I mean this word in its strictest sense) remains the least corrupt profession. It isn’t the best paying profession, the hours are long and the circumstances trying. Perhaps Rajkumar Hirani should try his hand at working 365x7x24 for bit (for the wages that most journalists make) and give up the creature comforts his status as a ‘numero uno’ filmmaker in Bollywood afford him. Try reporting from a Naxal hit area, being in a conflict zone or reporting on floods, or riots…
&nbsp;
Here is a great angst-ridden example from the film that make Sanjay Dutt a hero - and paints a sorry picture of the media. This is the impression you are left with as the end credits roll and you walk out of the theatre.
&nbsp;
Chappi jiski khabar, bani uski khabar,
Kisi high court ka usko nahi dar…
Loop mein ghumake ek jhooth bar bar,
Sachhai ka diya usne phich**** ph***
Jhooth itna bada hai, ki saach ho gaya,
Baba bolta hai abhi, bas ho gaya.

There are many stories in the main stream media that have painted Sanjay Dutt as the long-suffering hero — and Hirani (with Dutt in tow) have neglected to take those into account and taken media-bashing to a new low. Perhaps those stories were convenient but no mention is made of those. Instead Sanju singles-out two instances where question-marks were used in the headline. And this isn’t just a matter of semantics, its where a newsperson’s habit of quoting sources is questioned. If sources weren’t quoted, then most news wouldn’t be printed - that I can vouch for with my 18 years in the industry. And while I’m not a great fan a question marks in headlines either, what of the one big question mark that’s still hanging over Sanjay Dutt? Was his liaison with the underworld just a one-time affair and lead by this great need for ‘self-preservation’ as the film out have us believe?
&nbsp;
Here’s what I can safely say — most ground reporters have a great passion for news , and in disseminating what they believe is news they earn two squares a day and perhaps some creature comforts. And then a film like Sanju comes along and in the name of creativity reinforces this stereotype of a media that lacks credibility and all that we do is for eyeballs. That’s burning me at the stake. Criticise my handling of a situation as an editor or a reporter - sure, that’s opinion that I’ll take on board. But when you build a whole two-hour plus narrative around media-bashing, it reeks of an agenda.
&nbsp;
Besides, what is wrong about trying to sell newspapers or increasing the TRPs of channels? The media in this country is primarily in private hands and isn’t a charitable business. If the a slightly saucier headline gets more people to read it, blame it on the consumers of news and not the journalists.
&nbsp;
Surely if Rajkumar Hirani was trying so desperately to get the story out there, he would have made a documentary with the actual people involved in the narrative. Instead, with song-and-dance, he made a multi-starrer with some of the biggest names in the industry and a story line that features just two of Sanjay Dutt’s films — his first one Rocky and Munnabhai MBBS (a film that made Raju Hirani). That’s far from ‘not trying to make money’ and ‘being honest’.
&nbsp;
This witch-hunt has gone on for long enough- news need not be convenient and no one needs to empathise with the big Bollywood stars when they commit misdemeanors. Boo-hoo the punishment is harsh, boo-hoo the star has to do jail time but remember that the star also got furlongs galore— and got the out of jail card on the slightest of pretexts.
&nbsp;
No Mr Dutt, you aren’t a hero for having kept a automatic assault rifle in your house and the media wasn’t responsible for your being booked under TADA. No Mr Hirani, making a dishonest biopic doesn’t absolve you of the sin of tarring the media and being an irresponsible citizen to boot.&nbsp;

Opinion: 'Sanju', a lopsided biopic that blames it on the media

India has asked Facebook-owned WhatsApp messenger to take steps to prevent the <a href="http://wionews.com/videos/your-story-fake-messages-on-whatsapp-trigger-lynchings-in-india-147279">circulation of false texts and provocative content</a> that have led to a series of lynchings and mob beatings across the country in the past few months.

With more than 200 million users in India, WhatsApp's biggest market in the world, <a href="http://wionews.com/india-news/fake-news-proving-deadly-in-india-bbc-146731">false news </a>and videos circulating on the messaging app have become a new headache for social media giant Facebook, already grappling with a privacy scandal.

So far this year, false messages about child abductors on WhatsApp have helped to trigger mass beatings of more than a dozen people in India - at least three of whom have died.&nbsp

In addition, five people were beaten to death by a mob on Sunday in a fresh incident of lynching in India`s western state of Maharashtra on suspicions that they were child abductors.

"Deep disapproval of such developments has been conveyed to the senior management of WhatsApp and they have been advised that necessary remedial measures should be taken," India`s IT ministry said in a strongly-worded statement on Tuesday.

The ministry said law enforcement authorities were taking steps to apprehend culprits responsible for the killings but the repeated flow of fake news messages on WhatsApp was also a matter of deep concern.

It also said that messaging platform "cannot evade accountability and responsibility" when such services are abused by users to spread misinformation.

"The government has also conveyed in no uncertain terms that WhatsApp must take immediate action to end this menace and ensure that their platform is not used for such malafide activities," it added.

WhatsApp said it does not want the platform to be used for spreading misinformation, adding the dissemination of false messages was a challenge that companies and society should address.

The firm also announced awards for researchers to explore misinformation related issues and share their proposals with the messaging service, its parent Facebook, academia and policymakers.
Facebook did not respond to a request for comment on the government`s statement.

WhatsApp previously told Reuters that it is educating users to identify fake news as well as considering changes to the service. For example, there is now a public beta test that is labelling any forwarded message. Last week, it also introduced a new setting which allowed only the administrators or owners of groups to send messages.

The Moroccan beauty, Nora&nbsp;Fatehi astound the viewers with her moves in the song 'Dilbar' from&nbsp;the upcoming film 'Satyamev Jayate'.&nbsp;

The song also features John Abraham in action and is&nbsp; sung by Neha Kakkar, Dhvani Bhanushali and Alka Yagnik and the modified lyrics are penned by Shabbir Ahmed (awarded for the best lyricist).

The song is a recreated version of 1999 &nbsp;chartbuster 'Dilbar Dilbar' from the film 'Sirf Tum'. The reprised version looks inspired from the famous song that featured Sushmita Sen.&nbsp;

Nora&nbsp;previously shared a glimpse of her song on her Instagram handle with the caption, &nbsp;"Excited for this one! #Dilbar releases in just 2 days! Stay tuned! "

Talking about the song, she previously said in a statement,“Doing a remake of an iconic song is always nerve-racking because you never know if you can actually do justice to it. Sushmita Sen was iconic in the song and I hope I match up to her. I’m so lucky to have got this chance and thankful that Nikkhil Advani sir, Bhushan Kumar sir and Milap Zaveri sir trusted me to be able to do a song like this. The take on the song is very unique and different. I am sure this song will become a rage with the audiences”.

Incidentally, Nora&nbsp;Fatehi choreographed her own dance moves as she is well-versed with belly dancing.&nbsp;In the video 'Dilbar', she takes inspiration from&nbsp;internationally renowned Turkish Belly Dancer, Didem.

While Sushmita Sen's version of the song remains well-etched in everyone's mind two decades later, we will have to wait and watch it Nora is able to create the same magic.&nbsp;

The song also features John Abraham in action and is sung by Neha Kakkar, Dhvani Bhanushali and Alka Yagnik and the modified lyrics are penned by Shabbir Ahmed (awarded for the best lyricist). Incidentally, Nora Fatehi choreographed her own dance moves as she is well-versed with belly dancing. In the video 'Dilbar', she takes inspiration from internationally renowned Turkish Belly Dancer, Didem. While Sushmita Sen's version of the song remains well-etched in everyone's mind two decades later, we will have to wait and watch it Nora is able to create the same magic. The films also stars Manoj Vajpayee and John Abraham- who plays the role of a police inspector.
