<p>BJP MP from Mumbai North Gopal Shetty has resigned after allegedly saying "Christians did not contribute to the freedom struggle".&nbsp;</p>

<p>News reports quoted Gopal Shetty as also calling Christians "angrez" (foreigners). Shetty allegedly said the Christians were British, which is why they did not fight for India's freedom.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Instead, he said, it was the Hindus and Muslims who fought for India's independence. Shetty was quoted as saying "we (Hindus and Muslims) fought as one for our independence".&nbsp;</p>

<p>Shetty reportedly made his remarks on Sunday during an Eid-e-Milad organised in Mumbai's Malad by the Shia Kabristan Committee.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Shetty later said he had been "misrepresented", that he had never discriminated against anyone, and that he would be resigning.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The delegation was led by Lt Gen Liu Xiaowu, Deputy Commander of Western Theatre Command of People' s Liberation Army.</p>

<p>Before arriving at Kolkata, the team has visited New Delhi, Agra and Sukhna.</p>

<p>The visit was a step towards enhancing the bilateral defence cooperation mechanism between the two countries, which would help in maintaining peace and stability along the Line of Action Control.</p>

<p>The delegation visited Headquarters Eastern Command (HQ EC) at Fort William where they interacted with Lt Gen Sunil Srivastava, Chief of Staff, EC, and other officers.</p>

<p>The delegation was conducted around in Fort William and later taken on a visit to Victoria Memorial, prior to their departure from the city.</p>

<p>In May, the apex court decided to hear the plea filed by Indian Institute of Technology's LGBT alumni association seeking scrapping of Section 377 of IPC.</p>

<p>Previously, on April 27 this year, Ashok Rao Kavi of Humsafar Trust and Arif Jaffar also filed petitions against Section 377.</p>

<p>Their plea came just six days after hotelier Keshav Suri, filed a plea in this regard in the top court.</p>

<p>In response to Suri's plea, the apex court on April 23 sought the Centre's reply on the plea seeking scrapping of Section 377.</p>

<p>On that note, the business tycoon last month tied the knots with his partner Cyril Feuillebois in Paris.</p>

<p>Earlier in 2009, the Delhi High Court had decriminalised Section 377, but the order was later set aside by a Supreme-Court bench.</p>

<p>Categorised as an unnatural offence, consensual sexual intercourse between persons of same-sex is termed 'against the order of nature' under Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), and can be punishable by life imprisonment.</p>

Supreme Court to hear petition against Section 377 next week

<p>Days after the Union Cabinet approved a steep rise in the minimum support price of crops, giving farmers the promised 50 per cent return on input costs, Congress president Rahul Gandhi compared the increase to applying a Band-Aid to a massive haemorrhage.</p>

<p>The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for Kharif crops for 2018-19. The MSP of paddy (common grade) has been increased by Rs 200 to Rs 1,750 per quintal, while that of Grade A variety by Rs 160 per quintal to Rs 1,750.</p>

<p>In pulses, tur MSP has been raised to Rs 5,675 per quintal from Rs 5,450, and that of moong to Rs 6,975 per quintal from Rs 5,575. Urad MSP has been hiked to Rs 5,600 from Rs 5,400 per quintal.</p>

<p>However, some experts have argued that the effective hike is only per cent as the government has changed the criteria for calculating MSP.</p>

<p>Attacking Modi on Twitter, Rahul Gandhi wrote ''PM's grand MSP increase is budgeted at just 15,000 Cr. for India's 120 million farmers which is like applying a Band-Aid to a massive haemorrhage.''</p>

<p>Citing the farm loan waiver announced by Congress-JS(S) government in Karnataka on Thursday, he said ''To put this MSP increase in perspective: in Karnataka, we've waived small farmer loans of over 34,000 Cr! Marketing Vs Action,'' Gandhi added.</p>

<p>Hike in paddy MSP will increase the food subsidy bill by over Rs 11,000 crore based on procurement figure of the 2016-17 marketing year (October-September).</p>

<p>The Food Corporation of India (FCI), the government's nodal agency for procurement and distribution of foodgrains, buys wheat and rice from farmers at MSP and supply the grains under the food security law.</p>

<p>In its Union Budget released this year in 2019, the government had assured the farmers to pay 1.5 times the cost of production.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The minimum support price had remained in single digit over the past three years. The drastic change in the government's policy is seen as an attempt to woo the country's 260 million farmers ahead of 2019 Lok Sabha elections.</p>

<p>Analysts and economists have warned that the move could help push up inflation and add to the fiscal deficit and prompt India's central bank to raise interest rates more steeply than expected.</p>

<p>According to a report, the crop support prices have hit farmer's income and is one of the reasons for BJP's loss in the recent elections.&nbsp;</p>

The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for Kharif crops for 2018-19.

Days after the Union Cabinet approved a steep rise in the minimum support price of crops, giving farmers the promised 50 per cent return on input costs, Congress president Rahul Gandhi compared the increase to applying a Band-Aid to a massive haemorrhage. The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for Kharif crops for 2018-19. The MSP of paddy (common grade) has been increased by Rs 200 to Rs 1,750 per quintal, while that of Grade A variety by Rs 160 per quintal to Rs 1,750. In pulses, tur MSP has been raised to Rs 5,675 per quintal from Rs 5,450, and that of moong to Rs 6,975 per quintal from Rs 5,575. Urad MSP has been hiked to Rs 5,600 from Rs 5,400 per quintal. However, some experts have argued that the effective hike is only per cent as the government has changed the criteria for calculating MSP. Attacking Modi on Twitter, Rahul Gandhi wrote ''PM's grand MSP increase is budgeted at just 15,000 Cr. for India's 120 million farmers which is like applying a Band-Aid to a massive haemorrhage.'' Citing the farm loan waiver announced by Congress-JS(S) government in Karnataka on Thursday, he said ''To put this MSP increase in perspective: in Karnataka, we've waived small farmer loans of over 34,000 Cr! The Food Corporation of India (FCI), the government's nodal agency for procurement and distribution of foodgrains, buys wheat and rice from farmers at MSP and supply the grains under the food security law. In its Union Budget released this year in 2019, the government had assured the farmers to pay 1.5 times the cost of production. The minimum support price had remained in single digit over the past three years. The drastic change in the government's policy is seen as an attempt to woo the country's 260 million farmers ahead of 2019 Lok Sabha elections. Analysts and economists have warned that the move could help push up inflation and add to the fiscal deficit and prompt India's central bank to raise interest rates more steeply than expected. <p>The Nagpur bench of Bombay High Court directed&nbspthe state government on Thursday to deduct Rs 1 per day, until the next hearing, from the salaries of some senior bureaucrats for their failure to submit an action plan for removal of illegal religious structures in the city.</p>

<p>The court directed deduction from the salaries of principal secretary, Urban Development the secretaries of Revenue, Forest and Home Departments, chairman of Nagpur Improvement Trust (NIT) and the Nagpur municipal commissioner, said Advocate Firdous Mirza.</p>

<p>Mirza appeared for Manmohan Khorgade and Gajanan Zade who have filed a public interest litigation seeking removal of all illegal religious structures from roads and other public lands.</p>

<p>The bench of Justices Bhushan Dharmadhikari and Z A Haq was hearing intervention applications of trustees of some religious structures against proposed demolition on Thursday, Mirza said.</p>

<p>The Nagpur Municipal Corporation informed the court that it had issued demolition notices to illegal religious shrines and other structures, Mirza said.</p>

<p>He, however, pointed out that the court had directed the authorities to submit an action plan for removal of illegal structures from roads, but no action plan has been submitted yet, Mirza said.</p>

<p>The authorities instead started removing illegal structures standing in the residential areas, which caused resentment among people, he said.</p>

<p>The court then adjourned the matter for two weeks, while ordering deduction of Rs 1 per day from the salaries of senior bureaucrats till further hearing, he said.</p>

<p>An Indian-origin finance consultant was sentenced to eight years in prison for raping an 18-year-old woman after a night out drinking with his colleagues.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Sanjay Naker, a 28-year-old married man from north London, had denied three charges of rape, one count of attempted rape, one charge of assault by penetration, and a count of sexual assault at Inner London Crown Court.</p>

<p>The jury found him guilty of all charges but cleared him of the charge of assault by penetration at the end of the trial yesterday.</p>

<p>Sentencing him, Judge Freya Newberry said: "If you formed a view that the woman wanted to have sex with you, you were very much mistaken.</p>

<p>"It was quite clear that you decided that you wanted to have sex with her and she had no recollection of what happened but you saw an opportunity. It was a mixture of your own desire and arrogance regardless of any intoxication on your part."</p>

<p>The 28-year-old was found guilty of carrying the woman over his shoulder after she was denied entry into a nightclub in central London for being drunk and raping her in an alleyway.</p>

<p>The court heard that on March 11 last year, the 18-year-old victim had been out for the night at a bar in London Bridge area before being asked to leave as she had too much to drink.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Naker had been outside the bar, he saw the victim and began talking to her. The CCTV footage showed them chatting, Naker appearing to show her concern, picking her up when she fell and offering her his jacket. At one point he gave her a piggyback.</p>

<p>He then tried to kiss her and she pushed him off. He kept trying to pull her in the opposite direction to where she was walking and eventually succeeded, dragging her to a secluded corner. There he raped her and sexually assaulted her multiple times, the jury was told.</p>

<p>Security staff working nearby went to investigate, having seen suspicious activity on the CCTV. Naker told them he had met the woman in a club nearby and he gave them his details and then left.&nbsp;</p>

<p>During the trial, it emerged that the staff found the woman unconscious on the ground with her underwear pulled down and called an ambulance. She was taken to hospital to recover and later taken to a crisis centre, where it was determined she had been raped.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Naker arrested the following day. During his police interview, he claimed the victim had asked him for sex but was charged with rape in November last year.</p>

<p>The accused told police the sex was consensual and said the woman had not appeared drunk. He admitted later searching online for a definition of the word "rape" but said it reassured him he had done nothing wrong.</p>

<p>Investigating officer, Detective Constable Aidan Kersley from Scotland Yard's Child Abuse and Sexual Offences Command, said: "Naker deliberately targeted his victim as someone intoxicated and vulnerable. After talking to her for a matter of minutes, he managed to drag her to a secluded area where he raped her.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"She has no memory of what happened. Naker then brazenly gave security guards his name, confident that the victim's intoxication would protect him."</p>

<p>However, the Metropolitan Police said its investigation was able to prove the woman had been raped and build a strong case against him because "the simple fact was, she was too drunk to give her consent".</p>

<p>"This case shows that no matter what the circumstances, we will work tirelessly to bring rapists and sexual offenders to justice. Anyone who sadly finds themselves in similar circumstances should take courage from this case and the conviction we have seen today. Our officers are experienced, highly trained and treat victims with the sensitivity and compassion they deserve," Kersley added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Justice Pratibha Rani extended the interim order directing the employees not to go on strike till further orders and sought their response on a plea by the DMRC seeking that they be restrained from resorting to strike.</p>

<p>The high court, in an ex-parte interim order on June 29, had restrained DMRC staff from going on their proposed strike from June 30, saying huge inconvenience would be caused to commuters.</p>

<p>The court today issued fresh notices to some of the office bearers of DMRC staff council, who were not served earlier, and listed the matter for further hearing on September 4.</p>

<p>The court sought to know from Additional Solicitor General (ASG) Sandeep Sethi, appearing for the DMRC, whether the petition would be infructuous now as the proposed strike date of June 30 is over.&nbsp</p>

<p>The ASG said the petition cannot be infructuous as the employees have given three notices that they will resort to strike if their demands are not met.</p>

<p>Advocate Rajeev Mishra, appearing for some of the office bearers of the staff council, urged the court to direct the DMRC to file an affidavit that it will abide by the terms of settlement arrived at between the employer and the employees last year.</p>

<p>The court said it was a matter of arguments and would be dealt with later.</p>

<p>It had passed the interim order during summer vacations holding that, prima facie, the action of the metro staff does not seem to be justified or legal.</p>

<p>It had said Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is running a public utility service which caters to around 25 lakh citizens of Delhi, who come largely from the middle-income group, on a daily basis and sufficient notice has not been given to the DMRC and the conciliation proceedings are still in progress.</p>

<p>The DMRC has challenged three notices given by DMRC employees union and DMRC staff council of June 14, 18 and 20 respectively and sought direction to restrain them from resorting to strike.</p>

<p>It had earlier showed correspondence between the corporation and the employees and minutes of meetings held between its representatives and the DMRC staff council which showed that a settlement was arrived at between them on July 23 last year.</p>

<p>The court had said it appeared that there were disputes regarding implementation of the terms of the settlement and it is the claim of the employees that the terms of the settlement have not be fully implemented till date.</p>

<p>However, the DMRC maintained that the staff council was raising further demands which according to it was unjustified.</p>

<p>The total liability of DMRC till date is Rs 38,685.03 crore.</p>

<p>There are nearly 12,000 people employed with the Delhi Metro, with the non-executive staffers accounting for about 9,000.</p>

<p>Some of the non-executive staff of the DMRC were earlier staging demonstrations at a few metro stations, including the Yamuna Bank and Shahdara, since June 19 in support of their eight-point demand.</p>

<p>The non-executive workforce includes train operators, station controllers, operations and maintenance staff and technicians, and form a major component in the operation of the rapid rail network.</p>

<p>Some of the council members have been protesting over a number of issues, including pay-scale revision, modification of the DMRC Staff Council as an employees union, as well as proper guidelines for the sacking of an employee and that too in extreme conditions.&nbsp</p>

HC extends order restraining Metro staff from going on strike

<p>Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal met Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal late Friday afternoon.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Their meeting came after a landmark Supreme Court judgement Wednesday saying the Delhi government's decisions did not require the concurrence of the LG who only needed to be informed of the decisions.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Delhi's AAP government has consistently accused the LG of <a href="http://www.wionews.com/india-news/delhi-plans-home-delivery-of-40-government-services-lg-says-no-27811">stonewalling</a> its decisions and the Centre of using the LG as a proxy in its battle with the AAP.&nbsp;</p>

<p>There seemed to be some progress after their meeting Friday, but the turf war between the CM and the LG also continues.&nbsp;</p>

<p>One of the biggest battles between the two has been control of the Services Department — or who between the two is the final authority when it comes to the appointment and transfer of Delhi's officials. <p>Both the Sensex and Nifty posted weekly gains, rising 234.38 points, or 0.66 per cent, and 58.35 points, or 0.54 per cent, respectively.&nbsp</p>

<p>Meanwhile, foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) sold shares worth Rs 159.37 crore on net basis, while domestic institutional investors (DIIs) also sold equities to the tune of Rs 296.97 crore yesterday, provisional data showed.&nbsp</p>

Sensex rises 83 points in see-saw trade

<p>The Maharashtra Assembly could not function on Friday due to a power blackout caused by the rains, prompting an attack on the government by ally Shiv Sena as well as the opposition parties.</p>

<p>Both the Legislative Assembly and the Legislative Council were adjourned for the day, shortly after convening this morning as there was darkness.</p>

<p>Nagpur city received heavy rainfall last night and when the Assembly met at 10 am today, there was darkness.</p>

<p>Speaker Haribhau Bagde adjourned the House for an hour, saying the switching centre had to be turned off due to flooding in its panel located underground.</p>

<p>Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis then called a meeting of the leaders of various parties in the Speaker's chamber, where a decision was taken to adjourn the House for the day, Education Minister Vinod Tawde told reporters.</p>

<p>At 11 am, when the House reconvened, the security staff had to switch on the mobile phone lights to enable the Speaker to reach to seat.</p>

<p>Bagde then announced that the House has to be adjourned for the day.</p>

<p>Leaders of the opposition Congress and NCP wanted to speak but in the absence of electricity, the mikes were not functioning and therefore, they were not audible.</p>

<p>Similarly, when the Legislative Council met at noon, its Chairman Ramraje Naik Nimbalkar adjourned the House for the day.</p>

<p>Talking to PTI later, the chief minister said, "The city receives heavy rainfall two-three times during monsoon. But today's rains are very heavy. The switching centre has always been underground and it was flooded."</p>

<p>Interestingly, in 1961, when the monsoon session of the state legislature was held in Nagpur for the first time, the House had be adjourned before time when it was debating Maharashtra Decentralisation (of powers and functions to district councils) Bill, 1961.</p>

<p>As per the records, due to power failure, the lights went off and after waiting for eight minutes, the House was adjourned before its scheduled time.</p>

<p>Shiv Sena, an ally of the ruling BJP, was quick to criticise the government over the development.</p>

<p>"Nagpur is the second capital of the state and an important city. Nagpur Municipal Corporation is run by the BJP. It should have provided basic infrastructure to ensure rains don't obstruct the proceedings of the legislature session," Shiv Sena's leader in the house Sunil Prabhu told reporters.</p>

<p>"Had this happened in Mumbai, there would have been a barrage of criticism against the Sena-run Mumbai civic body. Everybody would have demanded an inquiry against the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC)," he added.</p>

<p>Prabhu said the area where all ministerial bungalows and residential quarters of legislators are located is also flooded.</p>

<p>Energy Minister Chandrashekar Bawankule said the switching centre had to be shut to avoid any technical problem which would have led to hazardous situation.</p>

<p>"The water level is receding and we hope the situation will be normalised," he said.</p>

<p>He said it was for the first time that rains had affected the proceedings of the legislature in such a manner.</p>

<p>"This may have happened because the drainage was not cleaned," the minister said.</p>

<p>He said there was power supply in the rest of the city. "We were not sure if generators can take the entire load of Vidhan Bhavan premises," he said.</p>

<p>Talking to reporters, senior NCP leader Ajit Pawar said, "Whatever happened today is wrong and condemnable. It is sad that speaker Haribhau Bagde had to personally monitor the removal of water from the switching centre panel."</p>

<p>He said the government delayed its decision to hold the monsoon session in Nagpur and there was little time for the authorities to make arrangements.</p>

<p>"This is the government's failure that it could not manage proceedings of the monsoon session, where 288 MLAs have come to put up issues concerning people," he said.</p>

<p>NCP MLA and former minister Bhaskar Jadhav said, "This government has been fully exposed. It decided that the monsoon session will be held in Nagpur. Should it not have made all the arrangements to put the disaster management systems in place?"&nbsp</p>

<p>Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad said Friday a controversial Indian Islamic preacher, Zakir Naik, allegedly wanted in his home country for terror-related activities and hate speech will not be sent back.</p>

<p>Naik, a radical television preacher, reportedly left India in 2016 and subsequently moved to largely Muslim Malaysia, where he was granted permanent residency.</p>

<p>According to Indian media reports, New Delhi asked for him to be extradited in January. The two countries have an extradition treaty.</p>

<p>"As long as he is not creating any problem, we will not deport him because he has been given permanent residency status," Mahathir said at a news conference in administrative capital Putrajaya outside Kuala Lumpur, when asked about the reports.</p>

<p>The reports say India had asked for Naik to be sent back for allegedly inciting youth to engage in terror activities via his hate speeches.</p>

<p>Naik, 52, has described the media reports as "totally baseless and false", adding that he has no plans to return to India until he felt "safe from unfair prosecution".</p>

<p>Tibetans on Friday celebrated the 83rd birthday of their spiritual leader, Dalai Lama with the series of events and prayers.</p>

<p>Dalai Lama arrived late Thursday in Ladakh for his birthday celebrations which took place in Shewastsel Phodrang complex on the outskirts of Leh with the large crowd.</p>

<p>Surrounded by his followers the Dalai Lama celebrated his birthday by cutting a cake&nbsp;</p>

<p>Media reports quoted the spokesperson of 14th Lama saying, "This time again his holiness decided to celebrate his birthday with the people of Leh."</p>

<p>During the celebration Dalai Lama expressed his joy to be in Ladakh once more. He also informed people about extending his stay till July.</p>

<p>"I am very happy to be here once more. I seem to be physically fit and if that continues I hope to spend some time here, avoiding the monsoon on the plains," he said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"You people of Ladakh have a special bond with me based on your faith and loving-kindness, of which I am very appreciative," Dalai Lama added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Meanwhile, Chinese authorities placed restrictions on celebrations of Lama's birthday inside Tibet.</p>

<p>As per reports, few days before his birthday, Tibetans in Kardze Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture were warned against celebration by Beijing.</p>

<p>According to the reports by local media, three people were also detained by Chinese police for carrying out activities related to the birthday celebration.</p>

<p>A lot of Tibetan leaders condemned the restrictions and termed it as "human rights violation" and urged Beijing to allow the small minority to celebrate the birthday of their leader.</p>

<p>Dalai Lama's birthday is a prominent day for Tibetans in Tibet and those in exile. Its celebration is identified as a form of resistance by China in occupied Tibet.</p>

<p>The 14th Dalai Lama is one of the longest-serving lamas of the Tibetan tradition of Buddhism.</p>

<p>More than five decades after he fled into exile in India following a failed uprising against Chinese rule, the Dalai Lama still exerts considerable religious authority over many of the six million ethnic Tibetans living within China's borders.</p>

<p>The Dalai Lama denies to support violence and says he only wants genuine autonomy for Tibet.</p>

<p>The Dalai Lama has been conferred the Noble Peace Prize, the Templeton Prize and many honorary degrees and other awards.</p>
