From companies building palm-sized satellites to those aiming to propel satellites into space using cleaner fuels, a new wave of space technology startups are mushrooming in India, catching the attention of investors keen to join the space race.

Bengaluru-based Bellatrix Aerospace, which wants to propel satellites into orbit using electric and non-toxic chemical thrusters, has raised $3 million from a group of investors, co-founder Yashas Karanam told Reuters.

Venture capital fund IDFC Parampara is leading Bellatrix's pre-Series A round. The family office of Suman Kant Munjal, who belongs to the billionaire family that controls Indian motorcycle maker Hero MotoCorp, and Deepika Padukone, one of Bollywood's biggest stars, are two of the other seven investors.

Meanwhile, Mumbai-based Kawa Space, which designs and operates earth observation satellites, has closed a seed round of an undisclosed amount, one of its investors, Vishesh Rajaram, managing partner at Speciale Invest, told Reuters.

Bellatrix and Kawa are two of over a dozen Indian startups developing satellites, rockets and related support systems which can power space missions serving a range of industries.

Their fundraising represents a big leap in private space investments in India, a leading space power but where the government has enjoyed a near-monopoly for decades.

"No venture capital firm which does tech investments in India has invested an amount of this size in space technology before," said Narayan Prasad, co-founder of online space products marketplace Satsearch, referring to Bellatrix's funding.

Besides Bellatrix and Kawa, seven space technology companies in India are funded, according to startup data tracker Tracxn and interviews with investors.

Space technology is red hot thanks partly to activity happening 2,000 km (1,200 miles) above the earth in the low-earth orbit, much closer and easier to reach than the geostationary orbit where many communications satellites operate.

Here, small and cheaper satellites are snapping images used in everything from crop-monitoring and geology to defence and urban planning, bringing down costs and increasing the frequency of images.

'Exciting times'

In the past five years, some two dozen Indian startups have grown into unicorns - companies with over $1 billion valuations - most betting on India's growing middle-class and the consumer boom at home.

India's space technology firms are part of a new breed of startups, and investors are paying attention, given the surging global interest in everything from space exploration to space vacations.

Satellite launches planned in the coming years worldwide give investors confidence in such companies, said Bellatrix investor Jatin Desai, whose Parampara Capital collaborated with lender IDFC to form IDFC Parampara.

"That gives us a large addressable potential market," Desai said.

Over 17,000 small satellites could be launched between 2018 and 2030, consulting firm Frost &amp; Sullivan estimates.

"There is money to be made ... These are exciting times for lots of entrepreneurs," said Rajaram, whose Speciale Invest has bet on three space startups in India.

Long gestation period

To be sure, investors aren't opening the coffers for India's space startups in large numbers just yet.

Indian venture capital firms Maple Capital, Ideaspring Capital, Bharat Innovation Fund and 3one4 Capital, say they have held talks with space startups but are taking a wait-and-watch approach.

"The gestation period is long by the time you see returns," said Naganand Doraswamy, managing partner at Ideaspring, referring to the multiple stages of development, testing and government approvals involved in space missions.

The state-run Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), currently preparing for its second lunar mission, has a monopoly on launching rockets in India.

Still, Indian firms are free to use ISRO's rockets or overseas launch services such as Elon Musk's SpaceX or New Zealand and Los Angeles-based Rocket Lab to send satellites to space.

Most Indian space startups are hopeful that parliament will pass a long-pending space law, which will give clarity on how private companies can operate in the sector.

The administration of Prime Minister Narendra Modi has sought suggestions from stakeholders for a draft Space Activities Bill, which it has said could "possibly" be introduced in parliament this year.

Bellatrix Aerospace's first customer is ISRO, which is also mentoring the company as it readies a water-based propellant to help manoeuvre satellites in space.

Bellatrix is not the only company racing to develop newer satellite propulsion systems, with at least three others overseas reportedly working on similar products.

The company says its systems are affordable, less toxic and much lighter, providing more room for payload on satellites. "This will be the future," co-founder Karanam said.

India's space startups ignite investor interest

Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking to increase the strength of judges and raise the retirement age of high court judges to 65 years.

Gogoi has also urged the prime minister to make tenure appointments of retired apex court judges and high court judges under Articles 128 and 224A of the Constitution respectively to clear the backlog of cases pending for years.

The CJI, who wrote three letters to the PM, said there was pendency of 58,669 cases in the top court and the number was increasing due to the filing of more fresh cases.

Due to paucity of judges, the required number of Constitution benches to decide important cases involving questions of law were not being formed, the CJI said.

"You would recall that way back in 1988, about three decades ago, the judge strength of the SC was increased from 18 to 26, and then again after two decades in 2009, it was increased to 31, including the CJI, to expedite disposal of cases to keep pace with the rate of institution," he wrote.

"I request you to kindly consider, on top priority, to augment the judge-strength in the SC appropriately so that it can function more efficiently and effectively as it will go a long way to attain the ultimate goal of rendering timely justice to the litigant public," Gogoi wrote.

He said that though the size of the feeder cadre of chief justice and judges of the high courts has increased in the past yet the strength has not been increased proportionally in the top court.

In his second letter, the CJI urged Modi to consider bringing a constitutional amendment to increase the retirement age of high court judges from 62 to 65 years.

"One of the prime reasons why we are not able to contain the ever-growing pendency is a shortage of HC judges. At present, 399 posts, or 37 per cent of sanctioned judge-strength, are vacant. The existing vacancies need to be filled immediately. However, despite best efforts put in by all stakeholders, it has not been possible to appoint judges to bring the working judge-strength anywhere close to the sanctioned judge-strength," Gogoi wrote.

The CJI also wrote that the retirement age of high court judges should be raised by three years to 65 years.

"This, in turn, would help in improving the vacancy position and consequently reducing pendency of cases. This would also be in consonance with the (repeated) recommendations made by parliamentary standing committees," he wrote.

Gogoi further said, "A judge takes time to evolve and by the time he is in a position to put innovative thoughts based on rich experience to the practice, he finds himself nearing retirement. This can be avoided if the age of retirement is raised to an appropriate level so that his vast experience, deeper insight and expertise can be utilised for a longer period."

"In my view also, if retired HC judges are considered for appointment in tribunals beyond the age of 62 years, they may continue in HCs up to 65 years. The proposal suggested will ensure continued availability of more experienced judges for a longer tenure," he wrote.

A blue corner notice has been issued by the international police (Interpol) against I Monetary Advisory (IMA) Jewels founder Mansoor Khan, who is accused of perpetrating financial fraud running into several crores of rupees.

Khan's company, IMA Jewels, has allegedly cheated a large number of investors, mainly Muslims, after promising them impressive returns on their deposits.

The firm allegedly has not paid interests on investments for the last three months.

He disappeared earlier this month after sending an audio clip to some investors threatening to commit suicide due to what he alleged was "harassment" by some politicians and rowdies.

In the clip, Khan alleged that MLA Roshan Baig, who was recently suspended by the Congress for his "anti-party activities," had taken Rs 400 crore and was not paying it back.

Khan, however, was quick to refute the charge.

A blue corner notice is an inquiry notice issued to locate, identify or obtain information on a person of interest in a criminal investigation.

Karnataka government has formed an 11-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) headed by DIG BR Ravikanthe Gowda to probe the alleged fraud.

Residents of Harivanshpur village, who are faced with the problem of the severe shortage of water and jolted by the death of several children, have announced a reward of Rs 15,000 for locating their MP and Union Minister Ram Vilas Paswan for not being with them in the hour of the dire need.

They put up banners and pasted posters on their cattle on Saturday to convey their anguish against Paswan.

They have also announced Rs 5,000 reward for finding out the local MLA, who is not around to address their woes.

"We are faced with multiple problems, but our MP or MLA has no time to visit us. Seven children died here. People have locked their houses and left. Even animals are dying as they have no water to drink," they said.

"Paswan is enjoying dishes at 5-star hotels and has no time to see us. These politicians enjoy all privileges after winning elections thanks to our votes, but forget us," said a woman.

Union Minister Paswan, who heads the Lok Janshakti Party (LJP), an ally of the BJP, filed his nomination for the Rajya Sabha as the NDA candidate from Bihar on Friday.

Former union minister and RLSP chief Upendra Kushwaha Sunday held Chief Minister Nitish Kumar responsible for the children's <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/bihar-harsh-vardhan-health-ministry-officials-review-status-of-encephalitis-cases-in-muzaffarpur-229718">deaths in Muzaffarpur district</a> and demanded his resignation.

"Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is responsible for children's deaths in large number in Muzaffarpur district...Despite so many deaths of children, the state government has not taken any concrete action to prevent it.

"The entire health services have been left at God's mercy," Kushwaha said while talking to reporters here at his party office.

Nearly 140 children have lost their lives due to Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES) outbreak in the state since June 1, of which 127 died in Muzaffarpur district alone, state health department sources said.

"Mr Chief Minister, mere assurance (to improve things) will not serve the purpose. Either you act or resign from the post of CM, failing which the RLSP would hit the roads to expose him (Nitish) for his failures," Kushwaha said.

The AES outbreak, which according to the state health department has affected about 20 out of the 40 districts in the state, has afflicted more than 600 children since June 1, killing close to 140.

Kushwaha, who was accompanied by the party's national general secretary, cited the state government's data to drive home his point that the government has failed to fill up all the sanctioned posts of doctors in the state.

Against the sanctioned posts of 7,249 regular doctors in the state, only 3,146 doctors are currently working in government hospitals and 533 contractual doctors are working against 2,314 contractual posts in the state, he said.

"How will the health care system improve with 3,679 doctors working in the state against the total sanctioned posts of 9,563 doctors (including regular and contractual doctors)?" he asked.

When pointed out that Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi has not spoken anything on the issue of the children's deaths, Kushwaha alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP president Amit Shah, who is also the Home Minister, also did not express their sorrow or grief over the loss of so many lives.

"This shows their insensitivity," he said.&nbsp;

Lalu was sentenced to jail on charges of corruption and has been undergoing treatment at the city-based hospital.

The hospital administration has forbidden him from eating mangoes on the ground of increased sugar level in the jailed politician's blood.

Lalu's elder son Tej Pratap Yadav visited him earlier it the day and presented with a copy with the Bhagavad Gita.

Several political leaders have been visiting the ailing RJD president. RJD's Bihar unit president Ram Chandra Purvey and former Ranchi MP and Congress leader Subodh Kant Sahay were among others who met Yadav.

With this year marking the completion of 70 years of bilateral relations between India and Indonesia, Ambassador Pradeep Kumar Rawat says "excellent" is the word best suitable to describe ties between the two nations.

Speaking to ANI, Ambassador Rawat said tourism has seen a major hike over the past years, owing to the multitude of measures taken by both governments.

"If I can use one word to describe bilateral relations, it is excellent. The foundation is based on goodwill. We have built on that to develop a gamut of other areas of cooperation. Last year, we commenced an inter-faith dialogue, as India and Indonesia share philosophical similarities," he noted.

Rawat confirmed that a number of bilateral visits are in the pipeline in order to strengthen ties.

"We have not only people to people relationships but also at the top leadership level. As close maritime neighbours, we hope there will be more bilateral visits at various levels, including at the top leadership level."

To commemorate the completion of 70 years of relations, a photo exhibition was inaugurated at the Prambanan temple complex in the city, depicting the journey of India and Indonesia over the last 70 years.

As part of celebrations, Yoga Day will be observed on Sunday and is expected to see the participation of around 1,000 Yog enthusiasts.

Talking about the development of Yoga over the years and its tourism potential, Rawat proposed for India to begin institutionalised training courses with degrees in order to create educational tourism opportunities and provide an overall boost to tourism.

"We can link more scientific principles to Yoga and its benefits for physical and mental health," he added.

"Yoga belongs to the world but has a home - India. Yoga connects India to the world and the world to India. Yoga is one of the most important activities offered by the hospitality industry," said Rawat.

India and Indonesia have shared two millennia of close cultural and commercial contacts.

The shared culture, colonial history and post-independence goals of political sovereignty, economic self-sufficiency and independent foreign policy have a unifying effect on the India-Indonesia relations, according to the Ministry of External Affairs.

Not only this, former Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and former Indonesian President Sukarno laid the foundation of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) at the Asian-African Conference held in Bandung in 1955, cementing the close historical ties shared by the nations.&nbsp;

Seeking to give more teeth to the National Investigation Agency (NIA), the government plans to amend two laws to allow it to probe terrorist acts against Indians and Indian interests abroad.

The Union cabinet will take a call on Monday on amending the NIA Act and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.

The amendment bill could be introduced in Parliament this week during the ongoing Monsoon session.

Amidst turmoil in the Congress-JD(S) coalition in Karnataka, senior Congress leader M Veerappa Moily on Saturday hit out at Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy over his 'village stay programme'&nbsp;stating that "simply sitting" after becoming a chief minister or minister does not work.

"Simply sitting after becoming a chief minister or minister does not work. It is important to concentrate on schemes and their implementation. Chief ministers or ministers roaming villages does not work," Moily said.

As part of his 'Grama Vaastavya'&nbsp;or 'village stay programme', Kumaraswamy had on Friday spent the night at the Government Higher Primary School in Chandraki village along with other ministers. He was seen sleeping on the floor.

"Ministers should be responsible for people. They should think about it. Governance should go to people...not only chief minister or ministers... Simply going to the people does not work," the former Union Minister said targetting Kumaraswamy.

Analysing Congress-JDS alliance's major drubbing in the state in recent Lok Sabha elections, Moily said the lack of interest of ministers in working on the ground is one of the main reasons for the loss in the general election.

"Government is not working responsibly and I think that is one of the reasons for the defeat in the election. They (CM and ministers) should realise that they should call a Cabinet meeting to discuss it. They should discuss debacle.. but I do not think these people (Cong-JDS) are thinking about it seriously," he said.

In Karnataka, the BJP had won 25 of the 28 seats along with an Independent backed by it leaving just one seat each to Congress and JD(S).

BJP is the single largest party with 105 members in the 225 member Karnataka Assembly, while the ruling coalition has 117 members with 79 legislators from Congress, 37 from JD(S) and 1 from BSP.

A senior resident doctor of Sri Krishna Medical College and Hospital (SKMCH), Dr Bhimsen Kumar, has been&nbsp;suspended over alleged negligence of duty by the authorities.

The health department had deployed Kumar, a paediatrician at Patna Medical College and Hospital to SKMCH on June 19.

Meanwhile, the death toll due to Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES) rose to 129 in Bihar's Muzaffarpur district, news agency ANI reported.

The death toll in SKMCH&nbsp;has touched 109 while 20 children died at Kejriwal hospital in the district due to the vector-borne disease, ANI reported citing official data.

The AES is a viral disease that causes flu-like symptoms such as high fever, vomiting and in extreme cases, brain dysfunction, seizure, and inflammation of heart and kidney. &nbsp;According to Bihar health department, the viral disease has spread across 16 districts and so far at least 140 lives in the state.

Hundreds of children are admitted to hospitals -- mostly at Muzaffarpur's SKMCH and privately-owned Kejriwal hospital -- for treatment of AES.

The high number of deaths this year has been blamed on hypoglycemia or sudden drop in blood sugar levels, which some experts attribute to malnutrition and consumption of unripe litchi -- a fruit grown in abundance in north Bihar -- on an empty stomach and failure to administer glucose within four hours of the onset of fever and other symptoms.

Nearly 600 patients have been admitted since June 1 out of which 298 were discharged from hospitals after the treatment.

News brief: Big stories of the day

I Monetary Advisory (<a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/ima-jewels-case-interpol-issues-blue-corner-notice-against-founder-mansoor-khan-229673">IMA) Jewels founder Mansoor Khan</a>, who is accused of perpetrating financial fraud worth crores, released a video on Sunday, urging police to arrange his return to India so that he could join the probe.

He promised to fully cooperate in the investigation being conducted by an 11-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) and also assured to return the investors'&nbsp;money by liquidating the company's assets.

"Alok Kumar Sir (Bengaluru Police Commissioner), please send the details about whom I need to contact to return. I want to return to India to put forward the truth before your team. I am very hopeful that you will do justice to me," he said in a video released on YouTube.

He alleged that some bigwigs are behind his company's collapse and demanded a CBI inquiry into the scam.

Khan alleged that "some powerful people" were behind his life that forced him to flee the country.

"I had earlier an audio clip. I had described the situations that forced me to flee in view of me and my families'&nbsp;safety," Khan said.

Khan blamed some people including former Union Minister and senior Congress leader K Rahman Khan, J D (S) MLC Sharavana, one terrorist and several people related to different business entities for his company`s downfall.

"I would like to congratulate ex-Rajya Sabha member K Rahman Khan, Mukhtyar Ahmed Tada who belongs to a terrorist group, JDS MLA Sarvanand and all those who make settlements in the name of social service," he said.

Khan said, "My aides within the management and some politicians deceived me. This forced me to leave the country in a hurry. Nothing was planned."

However, police had said Khan fled the country. Earlier he had alleged that suspended Congress MLA Roshan Baig did not return Rs 400 crore to him, a charge which was refuted by Baig.

Khan's company, IMA Jewels, has allegedly cheated a large number of investors, mainly Muslims, after promising them impressive return on their deposits.

He said that he made a big mistake by fleeing the country and was off boarded a flight when he tried to return.

"I went to the airport on June 14 to return to India but I was off boarded saying that I can leave the place. I was told to contact the immigration officials but no was there."

Khan said that IMA was not running a Ponzi scheme and was shut down due to some corruption at the state and the Central government level.

"I have a list of who extorted and harassed me," he said, adding that he would disclose these details when he is produced before the department and judiciary.

He also expressed his fear over safety and claimed that he would be "ultimately killed."

"I suspected some of my directors and my brothers. I have confirmed reports that my director Nizamuddin and cousin Wasim, Khalid Ahmed and Fahad Ahmed have stolen the jewellery from the vault," he stated.

The businessman also urged the authorities to make all those accountable whom he has accused of conspiring the company's downfall.

The development comes a day after the Interpol issued a blue corner notice to "locate, identify or obtain information" about him.

He disappeared earlier this month after sending an audio clip to some investors threatening to commit suicide due to what he alleged was "harassment" by some politicians and rowdies.

The SIT has conducted a raid at his office and jewellery worth Rs 20 crore. It had arrested the firm`s auditor Iqbal Khan and seven directors of different entities linked to Khan.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has also issued a summon to Khan directing him to appear before the agency on June 24.

Over 25,000 complaints have been filed against the company, demanding that their money be returned.&nbsp;

The BJP's "one nation, one election" idea aimed at having simultaneous Lok Sabha and state assemblies polls, saying it is a BJP ploy to win all elections through one-time "manipulation" of EVMs.

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-general-elections-2019/mayawati-gives-brother-and-nephew-key-party-posts-229741">Mayawati</a> hurled the allegation, describing even the BJP landslide victory in the last Lok Sabha election as "doubtful".

The new gimmick of 'one nation, one election' is a BJP's ploy to win the Lok Sabha and assembly elections by a single 'dhandhli' (manipulation) misusing the EVMs," she said.

"It will put the nation in an era of casteism making it free from any opposition," she added, addressing a party meeting convened to discuss the purported "national concern" over the alleged "hijacking" of the democracy via EVMs here.

"If there is no manipulation in the BJP's victory and if it has the majority votes by its side, why is the party shying away from going to the people and avoiding elections through ballots," a BSP statement quoted her as asking.

The meeting was also attended by the BSP's representatives from other states, who alleged that the Election Commission was working on directions of the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.&nbsp;

"The way the EC bowed before the prime minister also gives rise to the apprehension over the free and fair polls in the country and weakening of the democracy," she alleged and demanded that "constitutional bodies should find a solution to the people's concern".

She said the BJP's victory is "unexpected and against the people's mandate", which is not possible without a "planned manipulation and conspiracy".

The BSP supremo demanded that elections in India be held through ballot papers in future.&nbsp;

"All the main opposition political parties are of the view that elections should be held through ballot papers but the BJP and the EC are against it, which has created uneasiness in the country,"&nbsp;she said.

Mayawati also questioned the BJP's keenness on having simultaneous Lok Sabha and assembly elections.

"If the BJP is so keen on one nation, one poll, why didn't it hold the assembly elections in states like Haryana and Maharashtra with the Lok Sabha polls," she said.&nbsp;&nbsp;

She asked party workers to remain cautious to deal with discrepancies in the functioning of EVMs during upcoming polls and emphasised upon them to stick to the party's "brotherhood formula" successfully tested in the 2007 Uttar Pradesh assembly polls to ensure that the party's base remains intact.

In the meeting, Mayawati also took stock of the party's readiness for the upcoming assembly elections in Haryana and Maharashtra.

The leaders at the 34th <a href="https://www.wionews.com/south-asia/southeast-asian-leaders-throw-weight-behind-china-led-trade-pact-229516">ASEAN Summit</a>, that took place in Thailand on Saturday, acknowledged Indo-Pacific region as a concept for dialogue and cooperation.

They offered "<a href="https://www.wionews.com/south-east-asia/southeast-asian-leaders-meet-expected-to-discuss-rohingyas-south-china-sea-229680">ASEAN</a> Centrality" as means of engagement with all stakeholders in Indo–Pacific from the groupings such as BIMSTEC, IORA, East Asia Summit (EAS), ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) and the ASEAN Defence Ministers Meeting Plus (ADMM-Plus). India is part of all these groups.

ASEAN Outlook stated, "Asia-Pacific and Indian Ocean regions.." are "closely integrated and interconnected region, with ASEAN playing a central and strategic role" and Indo Pacific region should be a region of "dialogue and cooperation instead of rivalry" and "development and prosperity for all"&nbsp;

Explaining, ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific is meant to "contribute to the maintenance of peace, freedom, and prosperity", it said, the grouping will "continue being an honest broker within the strategic environment of competing interests", a line which will not go unnoticed in Bejing which sees the concept with suspicion.

It elucidated several areas of cooperation from maritime to connectivity to economic. On the maritime front, it mentioned United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and the "freedom of navigation and overflight", which has been reiterated by backers of Indo Pacific concept in the face of increasingly aggressive China.

India has been the supporter of the concept with PM Modi giving New Delhi's vision for it twice - once at the Maldivian Parliament earlier this month, then last month at the Shangri La Dialogue.

Talking about ASEAN during his speech at the Shangri La Dialogue, PM Modi Mentioned it several times and said, "ASEAN has been and will be central to the future" of the Indo Pacific.

Sanjeev Punalekar, an accused in the murder of rationalist Narendra Dabholkar, in judicial custody till July 6.

Additional Sessions Judge (special judge) R M Pande last Thursday granted Punalekar's custody to the CBI till June 23, after the agency said it recovered some "incriminating documents" from the lawyer's laptop and that he was required to be questioned about it.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Sunday told the court it does not require any further custody of Punalekar, following which the judge sent the accused in judicial remand till July 6.

The lawyer and his assistant Vikram Bhave were arrested by the CBI on May 25.

Punalekar was accused of giving advice to Sharad Kalaskar, one of the shooters in the case, to destroy the firearms used in the commission of the crime.

The court earlier remanded both the accused in CBI custody till June 1 and later extended it till June 4.

The court, however, later refused the CBI's plea to extend their custody to the probe agency and sent Punalekar and Bhave in judicial remand on June 4.

Later, Punalekar's counsel moved a bail application and while the argument on it was underway, the CBI on Thursday sought his custody to question him about some "incriminating documents and information" retrieved from his laptop which was seized by the central agency at the time of his arrest.&nbsp;

Dabholkar was shot dead in Pune on August 20, 2013.&nbsp;

Soon <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/operation-bandar-was-iafs-code-name-for-balakot-airstrike-229212">after the Pulwama terror attack</a>, India pulled out its <a href="http://wionews.com/india-news/gulf-crisis-navy-launches-operation-operation-sankalp-to-reassure-indian-vessels-amid-us-iran-row-229020">Navy</a> from an exercise and deployed a major part of its fleet, including nuclear and conventional submarines, close to Pakistani territorial waters.

During the aggressive deployment of the naval assets by the Indian side, the Pakistanis were getting an impression that New Delhi might use its maritime force to avenge the killing of its 40 CRPF personnel in the suicide bombing by Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) in <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/jammu-and-kashmir-pulwama-attack-key-conspirator-killed-in-anantnag-encounter-228205">Pulwama</a>.

India was continuously keeping an eye on the movement of the Pakistani military but after Indian Air Force hit the Jaish terrorist factory in Balakot, one of the most advanced Pakistani Agosta-class submarines - PNS Saad - vanished from the Pakistani waters, a senior government source said.

Having accounted for all other surface warships and all the submarines, the vanishing act done by the PNS Saad fitted with Air Independent Propulsion (a technology which allows the submarines to stay for a longer period under the water than normal submarines) swung the entire Indian Navy swung into action.

"The location near Karachi from where the PNS Saad vanished, it could reach the Gujarat coast in three days and the headquarters of the western fleet in Mumbai within five days and was seen as a major threat to the security of the country," the sources said.

The anti-submarine warfare specialist warships and aircraft were positioned to help in the hunt for the missing Pakistani submarine.

"All the areas where it could have gone in the given timeframe, extensive searches were carried out by the Indian Navy. P-8Is were pressed into service to locate the submarine along with the coastal areas of Gujarat followed by Maharashtra and other states," the sources said.

All precautionary measures had been taken by the Navy to ensure that even if the PNS Saad had entered Indian waters, all necessary actions were to be taken to force it to come on the surface, and if required take military punitive action against it, the sources said.

Nuclear submarine INS Chakra had also been deployed in an aggressive posture along the Pakistani waters and instructed to keep looking for the missing Pakistani submarine.

The Indian Navy's latest induction, Scorpene-class submarine <a href="http://wionews.com/world/opinion-ins-kalvari-will-change-the-face-of-war-in-south-asia-26706">INS Kalvari</a>, was also deployed in the hunt while their posture kept threatening Pakistan against doing any misadventure in the Indian waters.

As the days progressed, the Indian Navy kept expanding its area of search for the Pakistani boat and satellites were also used to locate it, meanwhile, the force was almost certain that the Pakistanis may have kept it hidden somewhere else.

After 21 days of an extensive search, the Indian Navy finally located the PNS Saad on the western side of Pakistan.

It was sent there for hiding, to ensure a covert capability in case of extension in hostilities in the aftermath of the Balakot airstrikes.

Sources said the Navy is maintaining complete surveillance of the Arabian Sea, especially Pakistani waters, and is aware of Pakistan's naval activities in the area.

Soon after the tensions spiked, the Navy had deployed over 60 warships, including the aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya, along with its battle group as part of a rapid redeployment in the North Arabian Sea.

"The overwhelming superiority of Indian Navy in all three dimensions forced the Pakistan Navy to remain deployed close to the Makran coast and not venture out in the open ocean," a statement by Indian Navy spokesperson Captain DK Sharma had said at that time.&nbsp;
