The BJP Tuesday accused the Mamata Banerjee government of trying to create "West Bangladesh" by allowing infiltrators from Bangladesh to settle in West Bengal.

The TMC, however, claimed that the National Register for Citizens (NRC) and the Citizenship Amendment Bill were aimed at deliberately targeting the minority community.

Speaking on the Motion of Thanks on the President's address in the Lok Sabha, Dilip Ghosh said the law and order situation in the state is in complete shambles and democracy in the doldrums.

"The (West Bengal) chief minister is very interested to become prime minister. She is trying to combine Bengal and Bangladesh and create West Bangladesh. There is a conspiracy going on to separate Bengal from India," Ghosh said.

The first time BJP MP from West Bengal said there is nothing political about 'Jai Shri Ram' slogan of the BJP since it was Lord Rama who taught justice and law and order, which is required in the state.

"Jai Bangla is a slogan imported from Bangladesh, whereas Jai Shri Ram is our own slogan," Ghosh said.

The BJP won 18 out of the total 42 parliamentary seats in the TMC stronghold West Bengal in the 2019 Lok Sabha poll.

"West Bengal is the only state which witnessed violence during the general elections. They are saying that you have to learn Bengali to go to West Bengal. This is the 'Sonar Bangla' we are now witnessing," Ghosh said.

Speaking in the House, Mahua Moitra (TMC) accused the BJP of spreading fear across the country since 2014 and politicising the issue of 2.77 acres of land (in Ayodhya).

"The BJP is mixing religion with citizenship. Through the National Register for Citizens (NRC) and Citizenship Amendment Bill, only one community is being targeted," Moitra charged, adding even school textbooks are being changed to indoctrinate students.

She said there is an erosion of electoral system and a "dangerous fascism" rising in India under the BJP. Holding that the Constitution was under threat, Mahua Moitra (TMC) said there were signs everywhere that the country was being torn apart.

Citizens were being thrown out of their homes, she claimed. The lynching of young citizens, she said, was taking place and drew the attention of members to the lynching of Tabrez Ansari in Jharkhand.

She also alleged the five large media houses in India were directly or indirectly is controlled by a single man.

BJP member Nishikant Dubey objected to Moitra's reference to 2.77-acre land and NRC in her speech, saying the two issues are pending before the Supreme Court.

To this, TMC leader Saugata Roy attacked Dubey saying his objections are "bogus".

"He has been put up by the Government to obstruct the opposition. He is using the green book (Lok Sabha rule book) without understanding to impede opposition speech," Roy said.

In his defence, Dubey said Roy has become "so blind in defending Mamata Banerjee that he cannot read Lok Sabha rules".

Chinese telecom gear maker Huawei Monday said it is ready to sign "no back door" agreement with the Indian government to discourage espionage, and other companies should also follow suit.

Huawei's business engagement in India is under scrutiny by the government after the US restricted hardware as well as software supplies to it.

"We are proposing to the Indian government that we are ready to sign 'no back door' agreement. We encourage other OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) also to sign this kind of agreement with the government and telecom operators," Huawei India Chief Executive Officer Jay Chen told PTI.

"Back door" in technology products refers to arrangement with government or with any third party to share customers' data in an unauthorised manner with mala fide intention.

The telecom department had come up with security guidelines in 2011 that mandated telecom operators to install certified equipment and devices in their network to ensure they are free from malicious softwares or bug.

It proposed hefty penalties on telecom companies for failing to ensure compliance to the law. However, the government is yet to set up labs to examine security issues in telecom gears and products.

The US government has alleged that law in China warrants its companies to share data with the country's intelligence for national security.

Chen said that Huawei has conducted research on Chinese law on its own and with the help of big legal firms based in the US, UK and Australia.

"They did some comparison. The Chinese intelligence law says that citizens and companies are supposed to cooperate if there is some national security threat but they never asked to share data or cooperate for state spying. Similar laws exist in the US, UK, Australia and India too," Chen said.

Huawei at present has most of its equipment installed in the network of Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea.

"The previous security guidelines issued in 2011 was limited up to 4G networks. Now, it should be upgraded for 5G networks as well," Chen said.

Huawei has teamed up with Vodafone Idea in India to conduct trials for the 5G services but is yet to receive approval for the same.

"We want a level playing field. I firmly believe that the Indian government will allocate spectrum for trials to everyone at one go and not differentiate based on vendors.

India can't afford to work with select vendors for another 10 years when it is aspiring to become the third largest economy of the world," Chen said.

Telecom and IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad have said that India's digital economy is likely to hit $1 trillion in the next 4-5 years.

According to Swedish telecom gear maker Ericsson, 5G mobile services are expected to create an over $27 billion business opportunity for India by 2026, while Huawei has estimated India to be the largest 5G market after China in the coming 10 years.

Chen said that Huawei is ready to further invest in India, work with Indian startups to develop solutions for the world, set up labs, work on skill development after it gets a positive reply from India on its engagement.

"European vendors say that their prices will remain competitive to Huawei because we are present in India," Chen said.

He also said the US ban on hardware and software supplies has not adversely impacted the company's operations and it has already started sourcing components from non-US countries.

"Many European companies have come forward because it is a business opportunity for them. After the US ban, our employees across board have started working at a very high-efficiency level. The spirit is now very high. They are working on alternatives," Chen said.

When asked about Huawei plan around its operating system Hongmeng for smartphones, Chen said it is an alternative but the company will prefer to work with Google's Android ecosystem.

"An open source Android ecosystem will remain our first choice. If possible, we will continue to prioritize using Android. Technically, developing an OS is not difficult, the difficult part is the ecosystem. Apple and Google have done very well in building their ecosystem. In the past, we have always supported the ecosystems of Apple, Google, and Microsoft. Huawei's own OS is a backup plan. If we have no other choice, we have to find a way to survive," Chen said.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Tuesday filed his nomination papers for the Rajya Sabha poll from Gujarat, scheduled on July 5.

Jaishankar reached Ahmedabad on Monday evening, hours after he officially joined the BJP in the presence of BJPs working president J P Nadda in Delhi.

Jaishankar, 64, had served as the Foreign Secretary in the previous Modi-led government. He was inducted into the Union cabinet in Modi's second term.

Gujarat BJP OBC cell president Jugalji Thakor also filed his papers for the second Rajya Sabha seat from Gujarat.

The two seats were vacated after BJP leaders Amit Shah and Smriti Irani were elected to the Lok Sabha last month.

As per norms, a minister who is not a member of Parliament has to be elected to either House within six months of his or her swearing in.

Thakor is from Mehsana district and belongs to the dominant Thakor community in the state.

Chief Minister Vijay Rupani and state BJP chief Jitu Vaghani were present as Jaishankar and Thakor submitted their nomination forms to the returning officer C B Pandya.

The last date of submitting nomination papers is June 25, while scrutiny of papers would be conducted on June 26, and the last date of withdrawal is June 28.

Given its strength in the Assembly, the BJP is set to win both the seats, especially as the election will be held separately as per the Election Commissions notification.

Upset over the Election Commissions notification, the Congress had moved the Supreme Court seeking its direction to the poll body to hold the elections to the two seats together, as this gives a chance to the opposition party to win at least one seat.

WION has learnt that Antiguan Prime Minister Gaston Browne on Tuesday stated that Choksi, once he exhausts all his legal options, will be repatriated to India.

A local Antiguan daily, Antigua Observer, reported that PM Gaston Browne is set to revoke Choksi's citizenship. Browne said that his Antigua and Barbuda citizenship will be revoked in short order.

“His citizenship was processed; he got through but the reality is his citizenship will be revoked and he will be repatriated to India; so there is recourse. It’s not a case that we are trying to provide any safe harbour for criminals, for those who are involved in financial crimes,” Browne said.

"I can assure you, after he has exhausted all of his legal options, he will be extradited,” Browne added.

This comes soon after the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Saturday informed a Mumbai court that it was willing to provide an air ambulance with medical experts to bring Mehul Choksi from Antigua to India and provide him with all necessary treatment back home.

ED has filed a counter affidavit in a Mumbai court in connection with Mehul Choksi case in which it stated, "The medical reasons and conditions appear to be facades being erected merely to mislead the court in an obvious attempt to delay the lawful proceedings."

ED filed the counter affidavit following Choksi's recent affidavit in a Mumbai court which he stated that he left the country for medical treatment and did not flee.

Choksi, last week, submitted an affidavit in the High Court of Judicature at Bombay with details of his diseases. Choksi stated that he has left the country for medical treatment and has not fled. He said that he is willing to join the investigation but is unable to travel to India owing to his medical issue. "If the court may deem it fit, it may direct the investigating officer to travel to Antigua," news agency ANI quoted Choksi.

"I am willing to join the investigation but due to my medical issue, I am unable to travel. I undertake to travel to India as soon as I am medically fit to travel," Choksi stated.

"I am currently residing in Antigua and willing to co-operate in the investigation," he added.

Choksi obtained an Antiguan citizenship in January this year. He is co-accused in the multi billion dollar PNB scam along with Nirav Modi.

India continues to pursue Choksi's return with the Government of Antigua through diplomatic and legal channels. New Delhi has already sent an extradition request to the country. Mehul Choksi had surrendered his Indian passport to the High Commission in Guyana in January of 2019.

The development comes days ahead of the G20 summit in Osaka during which PM Modi will strongly raise the issue of economic offenders being provided safe havens.

(#MehulChoksi) got through but the reality is his citizenship will be revoked and he will be repatriated to India: Antigua PM https://t.co/QO1sFgkxl3 — Sidhant Sibal (@sidhant) June 25, 2019 × This comes soon after the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Saturday informed a Mumbai court that it was willing to provide an air ambulance with medical experts to bring Mehul Choksi from Antigua to India and provide him with all necessary treatment back home. ED has filed a counter affidavit in a Mumbai court in connection with Mehul Choksi case in which it stated, "The medical reasons and conditions appear to be facades being erected merely to mislead the court in an obvious attempt to delay the lawful proceedings." ED filed the counter affidavit following Choksi's recent affidavit in a Mumbai court which he stated that he left the country for medical treatment and did not flee.

The Madras High Court Tuesday granted permission to Nalini Sriharan, a life convict in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, to appear in person on July 5 and argue on her plea for six months ordinary leave to make arrangements for her daughter's wedding.

A division bench of Justice M M Sundaresh and Justice M Nirmal Kumar gave her permission to appear in person on July 5 at 2.15 pm to argue her case.
Nalini, who has been in prison for over 27 years, wanted the court to direct the superintendent of police, Special Prison for Women in Vellore, to produce her before the court so that she could argue her case for leave as party-in-person.

The court had on June 11 observed that the right of Nalini to appear in person to argue on her plea cannot be denied.

According to Nalini, a life convict is entitled to one-month leave once in two years and since she had never availed such ordinary leave for more than 27 years, she made a representation to prison authorities on February 25 seeking six-month leave to make arrangement for her daughter's marriage.

Subsequently, Nalini's mother also made a similar representation on March 22. As the authorities failed to consider her representation, she moved the high court.

Nalini was initially sentenced to death for her involvement in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case. However, her death sentence was commuted to life imprisonment by the Tamil Nadu government on April 24, 2000.

She claimed that after commutation of her death sentence, around 3,700 life convicts, who had served 10 years of imprisonment and less, were released by the Tamil Nadu government.

"My request to the state for premature release under the 1994 scheme of premature release of life convicts was cleared by the council of ministers and on September 9, 2018, the council advised the governor to release me and other six life convicts in the case. But it has been over six months and the decision of the state is still yet to be implemented," she had submitted.

The AIADMK government had adopted a resolution recommending Governor Banwarilal Purohit the release of seven convicts -- Murugan, Santhan, Perarivalan, Jayakumar, Ravichandran, Robert Payas and Nalini -- serving life terms.

Chief Minister K Palaniswami had said his government was committed to the release of the convicts and expressed hope the governor would act on the cabinet recommendation for setting them free.

His statement came amid renewed calls, both from the opposition and Tamil groups, for the release of the convicts, after the Supreme Court disposed of a plea of the relatives of those killed along with Rajiv Gandhi opposing their release.

Former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated by a LTTE suicide bomber during an election rally at Sriperumpudur near here on May 21, 1991.

Conditions are favourable for further advancement of monsoon rains into the central state of Madhya Pradesh and the western state of Gujarat, the official said.

The monsoon has delivered 38% lower-than-normal rainfall since the start of the season on June 1, due to a delay in the progress of monsoon rains, according to data compiled by the India Meteorological Department.

Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati on Monday announced that her party will fight all future elections on its own.

The announcement comes a day after the BSP supremo held a meeting with party workers to review her outfit's showing in the recent Lok Sabha polls.

In a series of tweets, the BSP chief said that Samajwadi Party's (SP) conduct after the Lok Sabha elections has compelled her to review whether it was possible to defeat the BJP in future by continuing the alliance.

"Everyone is aware that forgetting everything of the past as also the anti-BSP and anti-Dalit decisions like reservation in promotions and bad law and order during the SP rule in 2012-2017, BSP adhered to the 'Gatbandhan dharma' with the Samajwadi Party in the interest of the country," she tweeted in Hindi.

A number of events have been planned by the army in Delhi and Dras in Jammu and Kashmir next month to mark the 20th anniversary of the 'Kargil Vijay Diwas', officials had earlier said. The anniversary celebrations for this year will be spread over three days from July 25-27.

"However, as part of the build-up to the main event, numerous activities have been planned to be organised all over the country from the first week of July," an official said.

The celebrations in the national capital will begin on July 14 with the illumination of a 'Victory Flame' from the National War Memorial in Delhi, which would traverse through 11 towns and cities to finally culminate at Dras where it will be merged with the eternal flame at the 'Kargil War Memorial', he said.

The objective of these celebrations is to evoke the feeling of patriotism through nationwide campaigns especially amongst the youth and to pay homage to the valiant soldiers.

"The Kargil War will always be remembered for its strategic and tactical surprises, the self-imposed national strategy of restraint in keeping the war limited to Kargil-Siachen sectors, and the swiftly executed tri-services military strategy and plans," the Army had said.

A ban has been imposed on the practice of disposing unclaimed bodies at Bihar's Sri Krishna Medical College and Hosptial (SKMCH), which is battling with cases of Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES), news agency ANI reported.

Hundreds of human skeletal remains were discovered lying in open behind SKMCH hospital in Muzaffarpur district on Saturday.

Bihar health department has launched an investigation as a team of SKMCH hospital accompanied by policemen visited the spot.

"A stern action would be taken against those found guilty," ANI quoted Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Manoj Kumar as saying.

Building Construction Minister in the government of Bihar, Ashok Chaudhary, on Sunday said that media is projecting the issue of skeletons found near Muzaffarpur hospital in a way different from reality.

Chaudhary said, "Sometimes bodies have no claimants so the government gives Rs 2,000 to the postmortem department to burn the bodies, which they don't do many times. A probe will reveal the truth behind this and the media is projecting it differently."

When a hospital receives any dead body, it has to immediately contact the nearest police station and file a report in this connection.

The corpse has to be kept in the postmortem room for 72 hours after the report has been filed.

If no family member arrives for identification of the body within 72 hours, it is the duty of the postmortem department to bury or burn the body following the stipulated procedure.

The death toll due to suspected AES rose to 167 on Monday with 110 case registered in Muzaffarpur's SKMCH hospital only.

A ban has been imposed on the practice of disposing unclaimed bodies at Bihar's Sri Krishna Medical College and Hosptial (SKMCH), which is battling with cases of Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES), news agency ANI reported.

A probe will reveal the truth behind this and the media is projecting it differently." When a hospital receives any dead body, it has to immediately contact the nearest police station and file a report in this connection. The corpse has to be kept in the postmortem room for 72 hours after the report has been filed. If no family member arrives for identification of the body within 72 hours, it is the duty of the postmortem department to bury or burn the body following the stipulated procedure. The government-run SKMCH is currently grappling with an influx of cases of Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES). Bihar: SSP Manoj Kumar imposes ban on disposing unclaimed bodies at SKMCH hospital

The Tamil Nadu Assembly is set to witness intense action in the upcoming session, when it convenes on 28th June. Besides the state’s severe water woes, one of the major issues that would hog the limelight would be the No-confidence motion moved by the Opposition Party DMK against the Assembly Speaker for allegedly performing his duties in a partisan manner. The No-Confidence motion is to come up on July 1st.

On April 26th, the AIADMK party Chief whip S Rajendran had submitted a recommendation to Assembly Speaker P Dhanapal regarding the disqualification of three AIADMK MLAs on the grounds of ‘anti-party’ activities. The MLAs are E Rathinasabapathi, V T Kalaiselvan and Prabhu, who were elected from Aranthangi, Vridhachalam and Kallakurichi Assembly constituencies respectively.

It was perceived that the AIADMK had attempted to disqualify the MLAs in order to reduce the strength of the house, in order to safeguard their government if they fell short of seats in the 22 bye-polls to Assembly seats.

On April 30th, Members of Tamil Nadu’s opposition party, the DMK met the Tamil Nadu Assembly Secretary on May 2nd to present a notice to move a no-confidence petition against the Assembly Speaker. This is in line with the party President M K Stalin’s earlier statement that the party would move a no-confidence motion against the speaker if he were to act in a biased manner.

However, the Supreme Court issued an interim stay on a notice sent by the Tamil Nadu Speaker to three MLAs of the ruling AIADMK, who were said to be loyal towards the TTV Dinakaran-led AMMK camp. Two of the MLAs who had received the notice from the Assembly Speaker P. Dhanapal had approached the Supreme Court to stay the notice sent by the Speaker.

As the results to the bye-polls are declared, the Tamil Nadu Assembly will now witness the participation of 232 legislators, out of the total house strength of 234. In the bye-polls the ruling AIADMK won 9 seats, giving it up to 123 MLAs, well past the halfway mark of 118.

Whereas, the DMK won 13 seats, taking its individual tally up to 101. When added to the seats of its allies- the Congress and IUML, the DMK has 108 seats in the House. AMMK chief TTV Dhinakaran is the sole independent MLA in the House.

The State Assembly has not regained its full-strength of 234 members since 2017. The state is expected to face two more bye-polls in coming months. One is the Vikravandi Assembly constituency where the incumbent DMK MLA K Radhamani passed away. The Nanguneri Assembly constituency which was recently vacated by newly-elected Congress Kanyakumari MP H Vasanthakumar is also to expected have bye-polls. Elections to the Vellore Lok Sabha constituency, which were rescinded in May this year due to large-scale cash distribution and malpractices, are also due.

Speaking to WION on the possible scenario in the Assembly, Political Analyst and Senior Journalist Sumanth C Raman said, "I don't think anything significant will happen as the Government has the numbers to defeat the no-confidence vote".

Protest, prayers in Indian state over water crisis

The UK is falling behind in the global race to engage with India as it has failed to adjust its strategy to fit India's enhanced influence and power on the world stage, a new British parliamentary inquiry report concluded on Monday.

The report 'Building Bridges: Reawakening UK-India ties', released to coincide with the first-ever India Day in the Houses of Parliament to mark the launch of UK-India Week 2019, called for a reset of ties through better visa and immigration policies for Indian tourists, students and professionals as it accuses the UK government of missing opportunities in the bilateral relationship.

"The UK is falling behind in the global race to engage with a rising India...The story of the UK's recent relationship with India is primarily one of the missed opportunities," the report said.

"There are certain practical steps the government must take to reset its relationship with India, in particular making it easier for Indians to visit the UK and to work or study here," it noted.

On the issue of visas, it expressed concern that India seems to face tougher norms than a non-democratic country like China.

"There is no excuse for the migration policies that have led the UK to lose ground in attracting Indian students and tourists " who not only contribute to our economy but build lasting bilateral ties.

"The FCO (Foreign and Commonwealth Office) should ensure that the goal of improving the overall relationship with India is woven into the broader government migration policy. Something has gone wrong, if it is more difficult for citizens of a strategically important democracy that shares our values, language and history to visit or study in the UK than those of an autocracy such as China."

While the inquiry acknowledged that in all fundamental respects the UK is well placed to capitalise on a mutually beneficial relationship with India, it warned that the relationship between the two democracies is not fulfilling its potential because the right message is not going out to New Delhi.

"As the UK prepares to leave the EU, it is time to reset this relationship. We cannot afford to be complacent or rely on historical connections to deliver a modern partnership," it said.

The report follows the year-long "Global Britain and India" inquiry, launched by the House of Commons' cross-party Foreign Affairs Committee (FAC) in July last year to explore the India-UK relationship in the context of Britain's impending exit from the European Union (EU).

Through a series of oral and written submissions from a diverse range of organisations and individuals working within the UK-India corridor, the influential parliamentary committee concluded that the UK must prioritise talks with India and do more to lay the groundwork for an eventual free trade agreement.

The Indian Ocean is identified as a vital arena for closer defence and security cooperation between the two countries.

"The FCO should take care to ensure that stronger economic ties with China are not at the expense of a deeper partnership with India," it warned.

Tom Tugendhat, Conservative Party MP and Chair of the FAC, raised the issue of the UK government's failure to formally apologise for the Jallianwala Bagh massacre during the British Raj in time for its 100th anniversary in April this year as an important symbolic opportunity" which was missed.

He said, "As new powers challenge the structure of global trade and dispute resolution, we cannot miss the opportunity to partner with India. Trade, security, a shared commitment to the rules-based international system, these are all factors in our growing and evolving partnership.

"The government needs to make sure the UK is making its support for India clear, reawakening the ties between us and building bridges that are made to last."

The report's findings are expected to feature heavily during the course of UK-India Week, organised by UK-based media house India Inc, which includes a high-profile Leaders' Summit in Buckinghamshire, south-east England.

UK falling behind in race to engage with India, warns British Parliament report

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday expressed concern over growing crimes, stating that the city is witnessing a 'dangerous spurt' in serious crimes.

Slamming the Delhi Police for the alleged increase in crime rate, Kejriwal asked, "Whose door should be knocked for the safety and security of Delhiites?"

"Delhi is witnessing a dangerous spurt in serious crimes. An elderly couple and their domestic help murdered in Vasant Vihar. Nine murders reported in the last 24 hours across the city. Whose door should be knocked for the safety and security of Delhiites?" the Chief Minister wrote on his official Twitter handle.

The tweet, which seems to be a sharp attack on the Central government over the present law and order situation in Delhi, comes after bodies of an elderly couple and their caretaker was found with their throats slit at a house in southwest Delhi's Vasant Vihar on Sunday morning.

Soon after Kejriwal's tweet, Delhi Police responded on the microblogging site claiming that heinous crimes in the city were in fact down by 10 per cent in comparison to 2018.

"No such increase in crime in Delhi. Overall heinous crimes down by 10 per cent this year compared to 2018. Similarly, heinous crimes committed against senior citizens also down by 22 per cent due to preventive efforts of Delhi Police," the tweet read.

The Supreme Court will hear on Monday the Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by two lawyers, in connection with the outbreak of the Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES) in Bihar's Muzaffarpur district in which 130 children have lost their lives.

The plea, filed by advocates Manohar Pratap and Sanpreet Singh Ajmani, seeks a direction to urgently constitute a team of medical experts for treatment of children suffering from encephalitis.

A vacation bench of Justices Deepak Gupta and Surya Kant is slated to take up the plea.

The petition sought a direction to the Centre and the Bihar government to immediately arrange a 500-bed ICU (intensive care unit) with required medical professionals to deal with the emergent situation, which has occurred due to the outbreak of AES.

The two lawyers have also pleaded a direction to the Bihar government to notify an "extraordinary government order" directing all private medical institutions in the affected area to admit and provide treatment free of cost to the patients.

The PIL said that the disease is completely curable and lives of children are being lost due to the "inaction" of the state machinery, which "failed" to take any steps to prevent the outbreak.

Despite the death of more than 100 children, the state government has shown "no prompt" steps to prevent the spread of the disease in adjoining districts, the plea contended.

"There is a complete failure of the state machinery to deal with the outbreak of Japanese encephalitis (JE), AES or 'chamki bukhar'. There is no availability of doctors, beds, intensive care units to deal with an epidemic-level situation which has resulted in more than 126 reported death of children in Bihar particularly in Muzaffarpur and its adjoining areas," it said.

The petitioners also sought a direction to the Centre and the Bihar government to constitute a fact-finding committee to determine the role of persons or entities who were negligent resulting in the deaths.

The PIL submitted that the Bihar government should pay a compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the next of kin of each of the deceased.

Encephalitis is a viral disease that causes mild flu-like symptoms such as high fever, convulsions and headache.

Supreme Court to hear plea on Muzaffarpur encephalitis outbreak today

Hours after Mayawati announced her plans of going solo in all future elections thus ending the SP-BSP alliance, the BJP took a swipe at Akhilesh Yadav, saying he has been “punished” by the BSP supremo as he “betrayed” his father and uncle for power.

Uttar Pradesh BJP spokesperson Harish Srivastava said the SP-BSP alliance was an opportunistic coming together of the two parties just for the Lok Sabha polls.

BSP chief Mayawati sought votes from the Dalits and marginalised them. She cannot think about anyone beyond her family. Her history is full of betrayals. On the other hand, Akhilesh Yadav had termed corruption and nepotism as socialism.

He should have thought 100 times before joining hands with Mayawati for opportunistic and selfish politics,” Srivastava said in a statement. He said the BJP “saved” Mayawati’s life and honour, established her in politics and made her chief minister. But she has been “disloyal to the BJP…how can she be loyal to the SP?” The English proverb ‘as you sow so shall you reap’ appropriately captures the goings-on in the state politics, he claimed.

“For power, Akhilesh Yadav betrayed his father Mulayam Singh Yadav and uncle Shivpal Singh Yadav. Now he has been punished by Mayawati’s betrayal,” he said. Earlier in the day, Mayawati declared her party in the future will contest all elections “small and big” on its own, ending the Bahujan Samaj Party-Samajwadi Party alliance forged for the Lok Sabha polls. The BSP chief, known to have made and broken many an alliance in her political journey, said her party had adhered to the ‘gathbandhan’ dharma in the interest of the country but was now forced to do a rethink.
