Ahead of the floor test of the Congress-JD(S) coalition government in Karnataka, security has been beefed up around Vidhana Soudha.

Adequate security has been deployed at Vidhana Soudha and Raj Bhavan road.

Both the BJP and the Congress leaders simultaneously held legislative party meetings in Bengaluru on Sunday.

Also, ahead of the trust vote, the BJP is scheduled to convene another parliamentary party meeting today. BJP MLAs, who are lodged at Ramada Hotel, Bengaluru, were spotted performing Yoga today.

In an attempt to persuade rebel MLAs, Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy on Sunday appealed them to attend the Assembly Session and explain how the BJP allegedly sabotaged democratic edifice and "destroyed its sanctity".With Karnataka Assembly scheduled to take confidence motion on Monday, all eyes are now stuck on the proceedings of the day particularly in the backdrop of BJP alleging the Speaker KR Ramesh Kumar of dragging his feet on the floor test.

On Friday, the Assembly failed to meet two deadlines set by Governor Vajubhai Vala to complete the trust vote. After that, Chief Minister Kumaraswamy moved to Supreme Court challenging the Governor`s directive to the government saying it violated well-settled law laid down by the court.

On the other hand, two independent Karnataka MLAs on Sunday moved the Supreme Court seeking a direction to conclude a floor test in the state Assembly on Monday before 5 pm.

The 13-month-old Congress-JDS government slumped into a minority earlier this month following the resignation of several dissident MLAs. Sixteen MLAs from the ruling coalition including thirteen Congress and three JD(S) MLAs have resigned.

The ongoing high-voltage political drama in Karnataka is likely to culminate on Monday with Congress-JD (S) coalition government schedule to face the crucial floor test in the Assembly.

Tension in both the camps ie JD(S)-Congress and the BJP, is apparently at its peak with leaders pulling up their socks and making all-out efforts to fetch numbers.

Afterwards, the Supreme Court on July 17 held that the 15 rebel Karnataka Congress-JD(S) MLAs cannot be compelled to participate in the trust vote in the Assembly.

The seizure of the Stena Impero in the Strait of Hormuz - the world's most important waterway for the oil trade - has deepened a crisis between Tehran and the West that was triggered in May when Washington tightened sanctions, effectively barring all countries from buying Iranian oil.

"All the crew members including the Indian nationals are in good health, they are still on board the tanker," the embassy said.

Eighteen of the Stena Impero's 23-strong crew are Indian nationals, Iranian authorities said previously.

The family of one of them - 26-year-old mess worker Dijo Pappachen, who joined the vessel just a month ago - said the company operating the tanker had told them about the sequestration on Friday.

"Neither has Dijo contacted the family nor could we contact him after the tanker was captured," his tearful father Pappachen T.V. said in their hometown of Kochi in southern India.

Britain called on Iran on Monday to release the tanker and its crew immediately, describing the seizure as illegal.

European countries including Britain have stuck with the nuclear pact that Iran signed with world powers in 2015 since the United States pulled out three years later.

But the pact is now hanging by a thread and Britain was thrust more directly into the confrontation on July 4, when its Royal Marines seized an Iranian tanker, the Grace 1, off the coast of Gibraltar. Britain accused it of violating sanctions against Syria, prompting repeated Iranian threats of retaliation.

Grace 1 also had Indian crew, who are now in British custody.

The brother of that ship's junior officer K. K. Ajmal informed from their hometown in Malappuram in southern Kerala state that they exchanged voice notes via social media on Sunday.

Mohammed Shareef said his 27-year-old brother told him the captain and the engineer were separated from the rest of the crew once British commandos took over the vessel.

Ajmal said he and the other crew were getting food, water and other essentials.

He said the ship was sailing from the port of Fujairah with 300,000 metric tons of crude oil when British commandos forced it to stop and came aboard in 10 helicopters, Shareef quoted his brother as saying.

Rajya Sabha on Monday unanimously passed the Protection of Human Rights (Amendment) Bill, 2019 after the Union Home Minister Amit Shah reassured opposition members and said that they should not doubt the intentions of the government.

With this, the Bill gets a nod of the Parliament as it has already been passed by the Lok Sabha last week.

The Bill amends the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993. Under the present Act, the chairperson of the NHRC is a person who has been a Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.

The Bill amends this to provide that a person who has been Chief Justice of the Supreme Court or a Judge of the Supreme Court will be the chairperson of the NHRC.

Similarly, a former high court judge can also become a state human rights commission chairperson besides a high court chief, according to the Bill.

The amendment provides for a reduction in the tenure of chairpersons of national and state human rights bodies to three years from the current five years.

"We have no bad intentions. The Chairperson will be appointed by a committee comprising of the Prime Minister, Lok Sabha Speaker, Home Minister, Deputy Chairman of Lok Sabha and leaders of the largest opposition parties in both houses," he said.

"Members should have faith in the wisdom of the committee," he said adding that there is no reason for any doubt by the opposition.

I salute the people who made it happen, said ISRO chief K Sivan.

This was the second attempt by ISRO to launch Chandrayaan-2 after the first attempt had to be called off at the 11th hour on July 15.

Almost the entire Chandrayaan-2's orbiter, lander and rover have been designed and made in India.

India used its most powerful rocket launcher, GSLV Mk-III, to carry the 2.4 tonne orbiter, which has a mission life of about a year.

The spacecraft carried the 1.4 tonne lander Vikram - which in turn is taking the 27-kilogramme (60-pound) rover Pragyan - to a high plain between two craters on the lunar South Pole when it lands on the moon in September, 2019.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the scientists of Indan Space Research Organisation (ISRO) for the successful launch of India's moon mission, Chandrayaan 2.

Chandrayaan-2, the second generation moon mission of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), lifted off from the Satish Dhawan centre in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh. The launch took place at 2:43 pm IST on Monday.

A few minutes later, ISRO announced the launch was successful.

"The GSLV Mk-III successfully injected Chandrayaan-2 in defined orbit today. It is the beginning of historical journey of India to moon and land near its South Pole to carry out experiments and explore the unexplored," said a beaming ISRO chief K Sivan.

"After a serious technical snag before the last launch, which we fixed, ISRO bounced back with flying colours. Immediately after the technical snag observed, the entire team swung into action. The 24 hours (after the first lauch was cancelled) were significant," he added.

I salute the people who made it happen, said Sivan.

This was the second attempt by ISRO to launch Chandrayaan-2 after the first attempt had to be called off at the 11th hour on July 15.

Chandrayaan-2 will explore a region of Moon where no mission has ever set foot. The spacecraft consists of an orbiter, a lander, and a rover together referred to as "composite body."

The probe's total mass is 3.8 tonne and is expected to land on the Moon's south polar region on September 6 or 7 this year.It will be the first Indian expedition to attempt a soft landing on the lunar surface. The rover will remain on the moon for 14 days.

This mission will make India the fourth country after the US, Russia, and China to carry out a soft landing on Moon.

The lander will then release a six-wheeled solar-powered rover that will cover about 200 metres of lunar territory.

The aim of the fourteen-day mission is to examine the surface, gathering data on minerals and even water in the form of ice.

India has spent about $140 million to get Chandrayaan-2 ready for the 384,400 kilometres (around 240,000 miles) trip.

The United States spent about $25 billion - the equivalent of more than $100 billion in current prices - on 15 Apollo missions, including the six that put Armstrong and other astronauts on the Moon.

China landed its Chang'e 4 lunar craft in January, and spent $8.4 billion on its entire space programme in 2017, according to international Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development figures.

And Russia - the first country to land an unmanned moon rocket in 1966 - spent more than $20 billion at today's values on lunar missions in the 1960s and 70s.

Chandrayaan-2, the second generation moon mission of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), lifted off from the Satish Dhawan centre in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh.

The spacecraft consists of an orbiter, a lander, and a rover together referred to as "composite body." The probe's total mass is 3.8 tonne and is expected to land on the Moon's south polar region on September 6 or 7 this year.It will be the first Indian expedition to attempt a soft landing on the lunar surface. The rover will remain on the moon for 14 days. This mission will make India the fourth country after the US, Russia, and China to carry out a soft landing on Moon. Once it's in lunar orbit 100 kilometres above the surface, the spacecraft will send a lander on a controlled descent to the surface. Chandrayaan-2 will reach the Moon one week early: PM Modi in audio message

Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to occur at isolated places, especially in Nainital, Champawat, Pithoragarh, Udham Singh Nagar, Dehradun and Pauri districts of the state on July 24 and 25, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said.

In its bulletin, IMD has also predicted strong convergence of monsoon westerlies are likely to continue over the southernmost states of Kerala, Karnataka and some districts of Tamil Nadu during next 48 hours causing widespread heavy to very heavy and extremely heavy rains during the period.

Nagaland is likely to cause widespread heavy to very heavy and extremely heavy rainfalls over sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Assam, Meghalaya, and Arunachal Pradesh during next 48 hours.

The monsoon trough is very likely to shift southwards from its current position and deepen gradually from July 24. In this scenario, the rainfall activity is very likely to increase over central India, adjoining northern parts of peninsular India and also along the northern plains from July 24 for the subsequent 3-4 days.

Hence, fairly widespread heavy rainfalls are likely over Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi, Punjab, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, and Goa during this period.
