The Madras High Court has reserved its verdict after the final hearing of a petition which sought permission for Rajiv Gandhi assassination convict Nalini to make video calls to her kin who are living abroad.

Nalini’s counsel M. Radhakrishnan told WION that they are hopeful of a positive verdict, given that it is a prisoner’s fundamental right to socialise with members of their family.

The petition was filed by Nalini’s mother in May this year as it sought to allow her daughter and son-in-law Murugan alias Sriharan(also in jail) to have 10-minute video calls daily, with their kin. Murugan’s mother resides in Sri Lanka and Murugan’s sister resides in London.

During earlier hearings, the Tamil Nadu government which was represented by IG, Prisons had informed the Madras High Court that there is no provision either in TN Prison Rules 1983 or a government order to allow a prisoner to make a voice or video call to anyone residing in a foreign country. On behalf of the Tamil Nadu government, the IG had asked the court to dismiss the petition.

The state government representative also added that prison authorities cannot take action against the caller on other end, if Nalini or Murugan violated the Prison rules or other laws. Further, it was stated that allowing a petitioner to make video/voice call is a privilege extended to prisoners for good behaviour and not a vested right. It was also pointed out that since the case had international ramifications, and the convicts association with a banned outfit, this fell under the domain of Ministry of External Affairs.

However, Nalini’s counsel had argued on the grounds that the state government’s contentions are unconstitutional.

“Their kin being foreign residents doesn’t mean that a foreign country is involved and that the MEA must look into it. Nobody can prevent two individuals from across borders from talking. The prisoner has the same right to express. Identifying and confirming the caller on the other end is the duty of the Prison authorities” he told WION.

When it came to the possibility of them getting in touch with members of the banned outfit(LTTE), he asserted that they are after all speaking to Murugan’s mother and sister both of whom are not connected to any banned outfit.

“This is a family call to their parents/in-laws, authorities can monitor it or videograph it, even the jailer can sit beside them and witness what is being spoken. Not allowing even this is a clear violation of fundamental right, Article 21 of our Constitution.

"It’s the duty of the state machinery to ensure that the call can take place” Radhakrishnan added, stating that the government’s earlier argument was indeed "intelligently drafted".

Murugan had earlier made requests to speak to his father, a resident of Sri Lanka, but that was turned down.

In late April this year when Murugan’s father expired, he was even denied the opportunity of seeing his father for the final time before the last rites were performed. Reports say that the father’s last wish was that of being able to see their son.

A government release said the Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister has given its approval for creation of National Recruitment Agency (NRA), paving the way for a "transformational reform in the recruitment process for central government jobs."

"A multi-agency body called the National Recruitment Agency (NRA) will conduct a Common Eligibility Test (CET) to screen/shortlist candidates for the Group B and C (non-technical) posts. NRA will have representatives of Ministry of Railways, Ministry of Finance/Department of Financial Services, the SSC, RRB & IBPS. It is envisioned that the NRA would be a specialist body bringing the state-of-the-art technology and best practices to the field of Central Government recruitment," the release said.

It highlighted that NRA shall conduct a separate CET each for the three levels of graduate, higher secondary (12th pass) and the matriculate (10th pass) candidates for those non-technical posts to which recruitment is presently carried out by the Staff Selection Commission (SSC), the Railway Recruitment Boards (RRBs) and by the Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS).

"Based on the screening done at the CET score level, final selection for recruitment shall be made through separate specialised Tiers (II, III etc) of examination which shall be conducted by the respective recruitment agencies. The curriculum for this test would be common as would be the standard. This would greatly ease the burden of candidates who are at present required to prepare for each of the examinations separately as per different curriculum," the release stated.

According to the release, candidates would have the facility of registering on a common portal and give a choice of Centres. "Based on availability, they would be allotted Centres. The ultimate aim is to reach a stage wherein candidates can schedule their own tests at Centres of their choice."

The CET would be available in a number of languages, it said while adding that this would greatly facilitate people from different parts of the country to take the exam and have an equal opportunity of being selected.

The release emphasised that a single eligibility test would significantly reduce the recruitment cycle. "Some departments have indicated their intention to do away with any second level test and go ahead with recruitment on the basis of CET scores, Physical Tests and Medical examination. This would greatly reduce the cycle and benefit a large section of youth."

"The government has sanctioned a sum of Rs 1517.57 crore for the National Recruitment Agency. The expenditure will be undertaken over a period of three years. Apart from setting up the NRA, costs will be incurred for setting up examination infrastructure in the 117 Aspirational Districts," it said.

Mauritian authorities on Tuesday arrested the Indian captain of a Japanese-owned shipwrecked off the island nation's coast, spewing tonnes of oil into pristine waters, police said.

The MV Wakashio ran aground on a coral reef on July 25 and began oozing oil more than a week later, spilling more than 1,000 tonnes into blue waters popular among honeymooners and tourists.

Officials have yet to reveal why the ship, which was making its way from Singapore to Brazil, had come so close to the island, which is now reeling from ecological disaster.

"We arrested the captain and his second-in-command today. They were taken to court on a provisionary charge. The investigation continues from tomorrow with the interrogation of other crew members," said spokesman Inspector Shiva Coothen.

The captain, an Indian citizen, and his deputy, who is Sri Lankan, were charged under the piracy and maritime violence act and will reappear in court on August 25.

Salvage crews managed to pump some 3,000 tonnes of fuel off the bulk carrier before it split in two on Sunday, preventing a much larger environmental catastrophe.

On Tuesday they began towing the larger of the two pieces of the Wakashio out into the open ocean where it is to be sunk. The part containing the engine room remains wedged on the coral reef.

‘Delicate operation'

"We are engaged in a delicate operation," maritime operations director Alain Donat told AFP.

"We want to take advantage of high tide to pull it little by little. This part of the boat is 225 metres long and 50 metres wide."

He said the vessel would be tugged almost 15 kilometres (nine miles) away from the coral reef and sunk.

The decision to sink the boat was taken on Monday in consultation with French experts who have been sent to assist Mauritius.

"Since oil has been largely removed and the amount of the remaining oil is small, the impact of the operation on the environment is expected to be limited," said an official from the Japan International Cooperation Agency, part of a team that is also helping Mauritius in the wake of the disaster.

Japan announced Monday it was sending a second team of seven experts to help clean up the spill, after sending the first team of six people.

The new team, which departs Wednesday, will bring special oil-absorbent materials donated by a Tokyo-based company.

"We want to help local people who are struggling to remove oil," said Yuki Takenoshita of M-TechX, which developed the material made of polypropylene which can absorb 1,200 litres of oil.

The US on Wednesday handed over to India hundred ventilators as part of President Donald Trump's offer of assistance to New Delhi in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

The ventilators are manufactured in the US and are compact, easy to deploy and provide India with flexibility in treating patients affected by the virus, the US embassy said in a statement.

The US government, through the US Agency for International Development (USAID), in coordination with the Indian government and the Indian Red Cross Society, donated the second shipment of 100 new, state-of-the-art ventilators to assist India in its fight against COVID-19, the statement said.

US Ambassador Kenneth Juster said, "We are very pleased to hand over the final tranche of 100 ventilators to India, fulfilling President Trump's commitment to provide these critically needed supplies to support India's pandemic response."

In addition to the ventilators, USAID is funding a package of support that includes warranties and additional supplies required to operate these machines, such as tubes, filters and other necessary components, the statement said.

USAID is also working in close coordination with the Indian government to enhance the capacity of the health facilities using these ventilators by facilitating setup, orientations and clinical training for health care providers responsible for operating the machines, it said.

The first shipment of 100 ventilators arrived in India on June 14. Since then, the ventilators have been deployed to support the care of COVID-19 patients at the eight regional All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), the statement said. "The total donation of 200 ventilators builds on the long history of US-India collaboration in the health sector and the assistance that USAID has committed to India in response to the COVID-19 pandemic," it added.

The summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, Srinagar, has recorded the highest ever day temperature recorded in August in the last 39 years. The city of Srinagar recorded 35.

The summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, Srinagar, has recorded the highest ever day temperature recorded in August in the last 39 years. The city of Srinagar recorded 35.7 degrees Celsius temperature on Monday, which is more than 6 degrees above the normal in the month. It has set alarm bells ringing among the experts tracking climate change in the region. Similar temperatures were recorded back in 1981. This has worried the farmers as there has been a deficient rainfall of 54 per cent below normal, according to India Meteorological Department data. Similar weather changes have also been noticed in other districts of the valley. Waterbodies have dried up which has also caused the scarcity of drinking water. "We have received less rainfall and western disturbances haven't impacted, due to which J&K & Ladakh have witnessed deficient rainfall. There has been a sharp increase in the day temperature," Sonam Lotus, Director, IMD, J&K told WION. A study conducted by Union Ministry of Earth Sciences has already warned about an increase in temperatures in Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh due to the melting of glaciers which is a direct impact of climate change. Satellite images have shown a significant impact of climate change on the glaciers in the valley, among them is Shafar Glacier which contributes to the Indus river. "I wasn't expecting such heatwave here because Kashmir is cooler as compared to Jammu but the heatwave here is intense this year. People from outside think the weather in Srinagar will be cooler like Shimla but its hot here as well," Ishtiyaq Ahmad, non-local said. Global warming is showing an impact world over, from a small place like Kashmir in India to the Death Valley in the United States where the temperatures of 54.4 degrees Celsius were reported Sunday. World Meteorological Organization says the high temperatures are part of a global trend. Last year, Jammu and Kashmir surpassed the world in average temperature rise recorded in the last 100 years. Experts are also blaming human-induced activities for the rise in the overall temperature in Jammu and Kashmir.

India's defence minister Rajnath Singh today attended the naval commanders’ conference as he reviewed Navy's challenges in proactive response in deploying ships and aircraft.

"I applaud the Indian Navy for their role in protecting maritime interests of the nation. I have full confidence in Navy’s preparedness to meet any challenge," India's defence minister said.

Rajnath Singh said, "The Indian Navy has effectively carried out mission-based deployment to protect maritime interests by deploying naval ships and aircraft at sensitive locations," adding,"deployments have helped increase maritime domain awareness and provided rapid humanitarian aid."

India's Navy commanders met on Wednesday for a three-day conclave to review the security situation in the Indian Ocean region. India has strategically deployed warships and submarines in the Indian Ocean amid tensions with China after the Galwan Valley clash in June.

Last month the US Navy's USS Nimitz had joined Indian Navy's warships off the coast of Andaman & Nicobar island for a naval drill. The US-India naval exercise came just after the Indian Navy conducted an exercise with the Japanese Naval forces termed "Passex" or passing exercise.

China already has a naval base in Djibouti in the horn of Africa connecting the Suez Canal, the Gulf of Aden and the Indian ocean.

India has in the past few weeks increased its naval exercise as disengagement talks got underway at Galwan amid increased Chinese naval presence in the Indian Ocean and the continued threat of Chinese ships in the South China Sea where US and Chinese naval forces have been at loggerheads with each other.

Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla on Wednesday met his Bangladeshi counterpart Masud Bin Momen here and the two top diplomats discussed ways to boost bilateral ties amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Shringla, who arrived here on Tuesday on his second visit to Bangladesh after he took office as the foreign secretary, held talks with Masud at Hotel Pan Pacific Sonargaon in Dhaka, the Dhaka Tribune reported.

Shringla on Tuesday called on Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina during which they discussed security-related issues of mutual interest and co-operation in containing the coronavirus pandemic and revival of the economy in a post-COVID-19 world.

Both Bangladesh foreign office and the Indian high commission preferred to keep the visit as a low-key affair amid reports that this is Shringla's first overseas tour since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ahead of his meeting with Shringla, Masud on Tuesday said that he would discuss various bilateral issues particularly regarding COVID-19 situation and prospective cooperation over access to coronavirus vaccine being developed by UK's Oxford University.

"We will talk about trial possibilities of their (India) vaccine (being developed at Oxford University) here as we are continuing our discussion (regarding access to a vaccine) with everyone," he said on Tuesday.

Developed in collaboration with British pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca, Oxford University's vaccine candidate is leading the race for a vaccine seen as the only viable option to get the world out of the coronavirus pandemic.

The vaccine is undergoing final stage trials in different countries. Serum Institute is also set to begin trials of the vaccine in India this week.

Masud said Bangladesh has also communicated with Britain's AstraZeneca via the High Commission in London with the offer for the trial to be held in Bangladesh, which has recorded 282,344 coronavirus cases and 3,740 deaths from the disease. It is also trying different ways to secure a vaccine.

"Different vaccine producers in India are dealing with the commercial sides of the vaccine. This is the reason for driving our efforts. We are in discussion with different countries that have developed vaccines, be it the Americans or Oxford,'' he said.

Hong Kong has banned Air India flights till the end of August after some passengers on one of its flights tested positive for COVID-19 post arrival, a senior government official said on Wednesday.

Passengers from India can arrive in Hong Kong only if they have a COVID-19 negative certificate from a test done 72 hours prior to the journey, according to rules issued by the Hong Kong government in July.

Moreover, all international passengers are required to take a post-flight COVID-19 test at the airport premises in Hong Kong.

"Some passengers who landed in Hong Kong on one of Air India flights recently tested COVID-positive post arrival," the government official said.

"The Hong Kong government has banned all Air India flights till August-end," the official added.

The airline had said on Twitter on Monday: "Due to restrictions imposed by Hong Kong Authorities, AI 310/315, Delhi-Hong Kong of 18th August 2020 stands postponed. Next update in this regard will be intimated soon. Passengers may please contact Air India Customer Care for assistance."

Besides India, a pre-flight COVID-19 negative test result certificate is mandatory for all passengers coming from Bangladesh, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Nepal, Pakistan, the Philippines, South Africa and the United States, according to the Hong Kong government's rules.

An airline operating a flight to Hong Kong from any of these nine countries has to submit a form before departure stating that all passengers onboard have COVID-19 negative certificates.

Scheduled international passenger flights continue to remain suspended in India since March 23 due to the coronavirus pandemic.
However, special international flights have been operating with the approval of aviation regulator DGCA.

Air India has been operating special international flights since May 6 under the Vande Bharat Mission to help stranded people reach their destinations.

Since July, India has established separate bilateral air bubble arrangements with countries like the USA, Germany, France, the UAE, the UK and the Maldives for international flight operations.
Under a bilateral air bubble pact, airlines of both countries can operate international flights with certain restrictions.

"Thanks Hon'ble SC! CBI enquiry = #Justice4ssr! "Hidden hands" misguidinh (misguiding) police investigation will be exposed! Jail time for "Pub & party gang" who enjoyed illegally, while 15,000+ Mumbaikars died in lockdown! Note- Justice will b done, Shelar tweeted"

Holding that the FIR registered in Bihar's Patna over the death of Sushant Singh Rajput was legitimate, the Supreme Court on Wednesday directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to investigate the case.

The single-judge bench of Justice Hrishikesh Roy also said that the Bihar Government was competent to recommend transferring the case to the CBI.

The apex court also asked Mumbai Police to hand over all the evidence collected so far in the case to the CBI. The state of Maharashtra refused the option to challenge the order, Justice Roy said.

The CBI has registered an FIR against Rhea Chakraborty and others in connection with the actor's death after the Centre accepted Bihar Government's recommendation to transfer the probe in the matter from Patna.

Earlier in the day, Bihar Police Association president Mritunjay Singh slammed the Mumbai Police, said that the whole country was "aware how much effort" was being made by the Mumbai Police in investigating the case. “The entire country knows how much effort Mumbai police was putting," Singh said.

The opposition NPF has withdrawn from the Joint Legislators Forum (JLF) on the Naga political issue, stating that it has failed to make any progress to resolve the imbroglio.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the Naga Peoples Front (NPF) legislature party held at the residence of opposition leader TR Zeliang at Dimapur on Tuesday.

The NPF, however, asserted that it would continue to be "active facilitators" towards an early resolution of the issue.

The NPF played an active role in resolving the Naga political issue at various stages for the last 23 years, stated a resolution adopted at the meeting.

It also volunteered to be part of the JLF with the ardent hope that the efforts rendered towards the cause would be carried forward in letter and spirit, it said.

However, since it was reconstituted on September 18, 2018, JLF has failed to make any progress due to the half-hearted approach of the present-day Government, it added.

The NPF lamented that the JLF has become a mere forum without any tangible road-map for resolving the Naga political issue.

All members of the 60-seat assembly are part of the JLF.

The forum also has a 20-member core committee, comprising of five NPF MLAs.

Maintaining that the signing of the Framework Agreement between the NSCN (IM) and Centre in August 2015, and the Agreed Position between the NNPGs and the Centre in November 2017 created a conducive atmosphere for the JLF to assist the peace process, the NPF claimed that the grouping's meetings were convened only to be followed by inaction on the part of the current state government, rendering it to be an ineffective forum.

With utmost sincerity, legislators of the Naga Peoples Front had put forth its proposition in almost all the JLF meetings that members in the forum should call upon the Prime Minister of India, the Home Minister of India and other Central leaders in order to urge them in bringing the long pending Naga political issue to a logical conclusion.

However, the proposal has failed to see the light of the day till date, it claimed.

The NPF claimed that on August 5, Rio along with Assam minister Himanta Biswa Sarma was called to Delhi by Home Minister Amit Shah and they left for the national capital the next day on a chartered flight.

They met Shah on the same day, it claimed.

While the Chief Minister of Nagaland on his return maintained an eerie silence on what transpired in the meeting, it was learnt from the Finance Minister of Assam through his interactions with the media that the meeting was in regard to bringing about permanent peace in the NE region and that the Government of India was keen on resolving the Naga issue.

The silence of the Chief Minister is best known to him alone, it said.

Further, the NPF stated that even as October 31, 2019 was made the deadline for a conclusion on the Naga political issue, the state government paid the least attention in convening a JLF meeting before that despite appeals.

"The supplication fell on deaf ears and therefore, the NPF legislature party delegation, along with some party central office bearers proceeded to Delhi on October 28, 2019 and met leaders of the 7 NNPGs and the NSCN (IM) on October 29 and 30, 2019 respectively," it said.

There was a positive response from both the groups and subsequently, on the evening of October 31, 2019, it was informed that both the parties had arrived at a mutual understanding, it added.

The party said that when the ruling dispensation does not have confidence in the legislators of the NPF, there is no valid reason why it should continue to remain a part of the JLF.

The NPF's decision to pull out of the JLF comes amid attacks by the NSCN-IM on Nagaland Governor and interlocutor for peace talks R N Ravi.

President Donald Trump has "elevated and solidified" America's growing and critical partnership with India in ways not seen in any previous US administrations, according to a senior White House official.

President Trump has prioritised US-India relationship and worked to expand all facets of the partnership over the last three-and-a-half years, the senior administration official from the National Security Council of the White House told PTI on Monday.

"Given the two countries' democratic foundations and their mutual interests in rebuilding the global economy following COVID-19, diversifying global supply chains, and ensuring the Indo-Pacific region remains free and open, President Trump will continue to build this critical partnership in the years to come," said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

"The Trump Administration has elevated the US relationship with India and solidified our growing partnership in ways not seen in any other US administration," the official said, noting that the president has enabled India to become the first non-treaty ally to be offered an armed MQ-9 Unmanned Aerial System.

During President Trump's historic visit to India February 24-26, he and Prime Minister Narendra Modi elevated the relationship to a Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership. Prime Minister Modi was also one of the first foreign leaders to visit the White House after President Trump took office on June 26, 2017, the senior official said.

The two leaders have also spoken side-by-side at two major events, "Howdy, Modi!" in September 2019 in Houston, Texas, before a crowd of over 55,000 and again at "Namaste, Trump" in February 2020 in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, to address a crowd of 110,000 people, the official noted.

"These gatherings boosted our people-to-people ties and highlighted the warm personal relationship between the two leaders," the official said.

Trump's Indo-Pacific strategy prioritises closer cooperation between the United States and India to secure a free, open, inclusive, peaceful and prosperous Indo-Pacific region, the official said.

"We have boosted quadrilateral consultations among the United States, India, Australia and Japan, with the four foreign ministers meeting for the first time in September 2019," the official said.

"President Trump has strengthened all aspects of US-India security and defence cooperation to build a comprehensive, enduring, and mutually beneficial defence partnership," the official said.

Under the Trump Administration, the United States has become the second-largest arms supplier to India, growing from virtually no arms sales a decade ago to more than USD 20 billion today, the official said, adding that earlier this year, the US and India concluded USD 3 billion in defence sales, including MH-60R naval helicopters and additional AH-64 Apache attack helicopters.

To bolster India's role as a net provider of security in the Indo-Pacific, the Trump administration has lifted restrictions on the provision of sensitive defence technology, enabling India to become the first non-treaty ally offered an armed MQ-9 Unmanned Aerial System, the official said.

As global leaders with vibrant democracies, the United States and India have cooperated to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic. US and Indian pharmaceutical companies have collaborated to expand global supplies of critical medicines and are cooperating on vaccine development, the official added.

In a separate statement, Al Mason, co-chair for the Trump Victory Indian American Finance Committee, said Trump has elevated India's stature on the world stage, and asserted that credit also goes to Prime Minister Modi.

"Of course, due credit also goes to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his skilled policy towards the US.

"The India-US relationship has been rock solid. Kudos to the brilliance of both Trump and Modi for cementing the bond between India and US," Mason told PTI.

His remarks came ahead of the November 3 presidential election where Trump, a Republican will face former vice president Joe Biden.

Biden, the Democratic Party's candidate last week picked Indian-American Senator Kamala Harris as his running mate, a move that could woo the influential Indian diaspora in America. President Trump's running mate will be Vice President Mike Pence.

Also read: 'Biden will protect the country': Former senior Trump administration official "The Trump Administration has elevated the US relationship with India and solidified our growing partnership in ways not seen in any other US administration," the official said, noting that the president has enabled India to become the first non-treaty ally to be offered an armed MQ-9 Unmanned Aerial System.

The Union Health Ministry on Monday said that a "new landmark" has been reached with the total number of tests for detection of COVID-19 crossing 30 million-mark in India.

This has been achieved due to expanded diagnostic lab network and facilitation for easy testing across the country, the ministry said.

A total of 30,041,400 samples have been tested until August 16 with 731,697 samples being tested on Sunday, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) said.

In a testament to the focussed, consistent and coordinated efforts of the Centre, and the State and UT governments, India has set a new landmark of conducting three crore tests, the Union Health ministry said in a statement.

Expanded diagnostic lab network and facilitation for easy testing across the country have given a substantial boost to the testing capacity, it said.

"With 731,697 tests conducted in the last 24 hours, India is on its resolved drive to increase its testing capacity to 10 lakh tests daily," the ministry said.

Building on this achievement, the Tests Per Million (TPM) have seen a sharp increase to 21,769, it said.

While the cumulative testing rose from 1.2 crore on July 14 to three crore on August 16, the positivity rate has seen a rise from 7.5 per cent to 8.81 per cent in the same period, the statement said.

"Although higher number of tests will push the positivity rate initially, but as the Delhi experience has amply shown, it will eventually lower when combined with other measures such as prompt isolation, tracking and timely clinical management," the ministry said.

Noting that aggressive testing leads to early identification and isolation of COVID-19 positive cases, the ministry said this coupled with efficient clinical treatment brings the fatality rate down.

"Thus, enhanced and timely testing is not only keeping the Positivity Rate low but also the Fatality Rate low," it said.

India's first homegrown fighter aircraft has been deployed at the western front along the Pakistan border amid rising tensions with China along the Line of Actual Control(LAC).

"The LCA Tejas was deployed by the Indian Air Force on the western front close to the Pakistan border to take care of any possible action by the adversary there," government sources told ANI.

Tejas is a single-engined, lightweight, highly agile, multi-role supersonic fighter. It has quadruplex digital fly-by-wire Flight Control System (FCS) with associated advanced flight control laws. The first LCA squadron – No. 45 Squadron ‘Flying Daggers’ – equipped with IOC-standard aircraft became operational in July 2016.

The fighter which has been deployed at the western front (LoC) is the Mark 1 version with air-to-air refuelling (AAR) and beyond visual range (BVR) capabilities as well as updated avionics and flight control software.

The IAF and the Defence Ministry are expected to finalise the deal for the 83 Mark1A aircraft by the end of this year.

Mark1A is the advance version of Mark 1 with better avionics and flight control software, it fulfils all requirements of India Air Force. Mark 1A light fighter will have the same fuselage and General Electric (GE) F-404 engine as the Mark 1.

If the deal is signed by the end of this year then the delivery of the first Tejas Mark1A aircraft is expected to start in 2023.

Deployment of LCH

Recently India deployed it's two prototype twin-engined multirole light combat helicopter (LCH) apart from heavy lifter Chinook and heavy-duty Apache attack helicopter. IAF vice chief Air Marshal Harjit Singh Arora also took sortie in the LCH and examined its capabilities.

One of the twin-engined multirole rotorcraft conducted a simulated attack on a high-altitude target after which it landed at “one of the most treacherous helipads in the region”, HAL had said.

The need for LCH rose at the time of Kargil war when a number of IAF attack helicopters targetted enemies sitting at the peak of the mountains.

LCH is capable of operating at the world's highest battle airfields (14kft to 18kft depending on the payload) and is comparable to any other fighter helicopter of its class. LCH with a narrow fuselage has pilot and co-pilot/gunners in tandem configuration incorporating a number of stealth features, armour protection and night attack capabilities.

“It is the lightest attack helicopter in the world designed and developed by HAL to meet the specific and unique requirements of the Indian armed forces reflecting the crucial role of HAL in Atma Nirbhar Bharat”, Mr R Madhavan, CMD, HAL, said.

The IAF and the Indian Army together need around 160 LCHs. The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) had approved the proposal for an initial batch of 15 LCHs. The IAF issued Request for Proposal (RFP) for 15 Limited Series Production (LSP) helicopter (10 for IAF and 5 for Army) and HAL has been submitted. Price negotiation has also been completed with the order expected soon.

Deployment of Rudra

Rudra is also a homegrown product which is a weaponised version of HAL manufactured Advanced Light Helicopter (Dhruv). The deployment of Rudra was noticed when the helicopter was seen participating in the exercise which was demonstrated to the defence minister Rajnath Singh when he visited at the eastern front to meet soldiers and review military preparedness last month.

The Indian Army currently operates over 50 HAL-built Rudras, with more in the pipeline for a total fleet of 78 airframes and Rudras which are capable of firing anti-tank guided Nag missile (HELINA) which has been named now as Dhruvastra.

Currently, Rudras are equipped with 70mm rockets and 20mm M621 cannon on a Nexter THL-20 chin-mounted gun turret.
