Former Pakistani diplomat Agha Hilaly admitted on Saturday that 300 Pakistani terrorists had died in India's Balakot airstrike in February 2019. Hilaly was talking on a news television show. Hilaly's admission goes starkly against Pakistani stand that their were zero casualties. Indian Air Force (IAF) had carried out the airstrike on a Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) terror training camp on February 29, 2019 at Balakot in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

"India crossed the international border and did an act of war in which at least 300 were reported dead. Our target was different from theirs. We targeted their high command. That was our legitimate target because they are men of the military. We subconsciously accepted that a surgical strike -- a limited action -- did not result in any casualty. Now we have subconsciously told them that, whatever they will do, we`ll do only that much and won`t escalate," said Agha Hilaly on Pakistani channel as per news agency ANI.

This revelation by the former Pakistan diplomat comes months after the remarks of Pakistan Muslim League-N leader Ayaz Sadiq, who in October 2020, said in the country`s National Assembly that Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi in an important meeting had pointed out that if Pakistan did not release Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman, India would attack Pakistan "that night by 9 pm".

The IAF had carried out Balakot airstrike in response to terror attack in Pulwama in which 40 CRPF personnel lost their lives. Jaish-e-Mohammed had claimed responsibility for the February 14 attack.

After the Balakot strike, Pakistan has refused to acknowledge the presence of terrorist as a face-saving measure.

Thiruvananathapuram, Jan 10 (IANS) Jayachandran Kadampanad needs no introduction in Kerala - he is the state`s own ballad singer, travelling across the state and outside, performing folk music. He is now into conservation of nature and has found bamboo as a product which can be used for the conservation of nature.

"Folklife academy", his organisation has already started promoting bamboo and bamboo products across the state.
Kadampanad, while speaking to IANS, said, "I had undertaken a trip across the state under the auspices of the state Haritha mission, singing folk music, promoting nature conservation and found that mother nature is being exploited totally."
He recalled the trip he undertook from Kasargod, in the northern most part of the state, to state capital Thiruvananthapuram with his troupe in a state road transport corporation bus.
He said, "We found that unabated construction was taking place in the state and hillocks are being demolished and quarry mafia was ruling the roost".
The journey helped him meet school children, college students and people from all walks of life and spread the message of conservation of environment.
Immediately after the journey, he approached the authorities and told them that the possibility of flood is looming large over the state. Flood struck the state in 2018, taking the lives of many and submerging many parts under water.
When asked if this was a premonition, Jayachandran said, "Never, nature was giving clear message. We have to open our eyes and ears to understand it. I knew that this was coming and had warned the authorities."
Kadampanad with the help of a few of his friends and environmentalists is into promotion of bamboo. The noted ballad singer said, "Bamboo if cultivated across the state on river banks will help prevent soil erosion and this is a natural way to preserve environment."
He has also developed and designed several products with bamboo including baskets, chairs, tables, musical instruments, decorations in five star hotels and many more.
He has already submitted a proposal to Thiruvananathapuram corporation for constructing bus waiting sheds with bamboo. He said, "These bus waiting sheds will be a centre for promotion of our culture and depict the ethinicity of our state."
He also said that the cost of these bus waiting sheds will be one fourth of the present construction cost and will last for more than thirty years.
Kadampanad is also planning to submit a proposal to the state local body department to construct bamboo bus waiting sheds.
He said that he is trying his best to conduct the project with the support of the state government. He is also in touch with several NGOs, civil society organisations and like-minded individuals for evolving a bamboo culture in the state.
With a folk singer of repute entering into conservation of nature using bamboo, the state can expect a new development perspective.

With the world`s biggest vaccination drive slated to roll out across India from January 16, the Delhi government on Sunday said that it has made all preparations and finalised 89 hospitals for the first phase of Covid-19 vaccination.

Of the 89 Delhi hospitals, 40 are government-run and 49 are private, Delhi Health Minister Satyendar Jain told a press conference.

Noting that the Central government has finalised around 5,000 vaccination sites across India, he said: "As per the instruction of the Central government, the Delhi government has prepared these 89 sites which are different hospitals of Delhi.

"At every centre, there will be 8-9 people who will handle the drive. With this preparation, the Delhi government will start the first phase of vaccination from January 16."

Jain said that the Delhi government will focus on the healthcare workers, frontline workers and then the people aged above 50 in the first phase of the Covid-19 vaccination.

As many as 2,25,000 healthcare workers will get the vaccination in the first phase of the mammoth exercise and that the Delhi government will also include teachers in the exercise as they worked as frontline workers in the time of Covid-19 pandemic, he said.

Jain said that the vaccines for the Covid-19 will start arriving between January 12 to 14 and the Delhi government has prepared a "very strong and robust storage system to keep the vaccine".

"The whole system of vaccination is ready and we are fully prepared to start the vaccination drive. Right now, we are only waiting for the arrival of the Covid-19 vaccine and as soon as the vaccines start arriving, the work will start immediately."

Citing Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal`s request to the Central government on Saturday regarding free vaccine distribution to everyone, the Minister said the Delhi government "is of the view that every person should get free vaccine across the country and we are monitoring the situation very carefully".

Earlier in a meeting with Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan, Jain said he also requested him for the same.

"From our side, every decision regarding Covid vaccination will be for the benefit of the citizens of Delhi."

The Minister said that that vaccine will be administered to Delhi residents as the Covid-19 situation in the capital has improved a lot and the situation is now under control with 519 positive cases witnessed on Saturday.

The positivity rate of Covid infection was 0.65. From the past 15 days, Delhi is continuously witnessing higher positivity rate. It should also be noted that for more than 15 days now, Delhi is witnessing less than thousand cases per day, he added.

The Centre has directed states and union territories across the country to increase surveillance around water bodies, live bird markets, zoos, and poultry farms as well as strengthen biosecurity at poultry farms amid the bird flu scare.

The Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying said in a statement on Sunday that the states and UTs have been asked to increase public awareness and prevent the spread of misinformation on avian influenza or bird flu.

The states and UTs have also been requested to ensure proper disposal of animal/bird carcasses, the statement added.

After the confirmation of avian influenza in samples taken from poultry from two farms in Panchkula district of Haryana, the state had deployed nine rapid response teams and undertaken control and containment operations at both the places, the Ministry added.

Samples of crows/wild birds had confirmed avian influenza (H5) in Surat district of Gujarat as well as Sirohi district in Rajasthan. Further, reports of unusual deaths of 86 crows and 2 egrets were received from Kangra district in Himachal Pradesh.

Reports of unusual mortality of wild birds were also received from Nahan, Bilaspur and Mandi in Himachal and the samples sent to a designated laboratory for testing, the Ministry said.

Advisories have since been issued to the affected states to prevent further spread of the avian disease. So far, the disease has been confirmed from Kerala, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Gujarat, and Uttar Pradesh.

"The test reports of samples sent to the designated laboratory from Delhi and Maharashtra are still awaited. Further, no samples have been confirmed positive for avian flu in wild birds from Balod district in Chhattisgarh," it added.

The control and containment operation has been completed in two affected districts of Kerala and post-operational surveillance programme guidelines issued to the southern state.

The central teams formed to monitor the situation are visiting the affected areas across the country.

One of the central teams visited Kerala on January 9 and is monitoring the epicentre spots and also conducting epidemiological investigations. Another central team visited Himachal on January 10 and undertook a survey in the affected areas.

The verdict of the extradition case of fugitive diamond dealer Nirav Modi will be handed down by the UK judge next month after the Indian government and Modi`s defence lawyers made their final submissions at Westminster Magistrate's Court in London on Friday.

Judge Samuel Goozee will deliver his judgment on February 25, just under two years after Nirav Modi was arrested in London on multiple charges including defrauding the state-owned Punjab National Bank (PNB) of more than USD 2 billion.

Judge Goozee must decide if there is a `prima facie` case that Modi - the one-time billionaire and jeweller to some of the most glamorous stars in the world - not only defrauded PNB but also laundered the proceeds of that fraud and subsequently attempt to destroy crucial evidence and intimidate witnesses.

Yesterday on the penultimate day of the hearing, Modi`s lawyers have claimed that he is unfit to face solitary confinement. Today`s attention turned to the extraordinary scheme wherein Modi is alleged to have perpetrated to defraud and enrich himself and his family using the funds of one of the oldest and biggest financial institutions in India.

Helen Malcolm QC, the formidable barrister representing the Crown Prosecution Service, which in turn is representing the Indian government began the final day`s proceedings by carefully summarizing that very scheme. It was a summary that clearly made Modi visibly uncomfortable - normally subdued, Modi was seen sighing and fidgeting frequently as he appeared at the court via video link from Wandsworth Prison in south London where he has been held since his arrest.

At the heart of the scheme is a conspiracy between Modi and several members of staff at PNB to siphon money out of the bank using `Letters of Undertaking`, a bank guarantee which allows a bank`s customers to raise money from the foreign branches of other Indian banks as a form of short term credit.

Malcolm outlined how Modi set up a string of shell companies posing as third party suppliers in Hong Kong and the United Arab Emirates and then colluded with a PNB employee - Gokulnath Shetty - to obtain hundreds of LOU`s over a 6-year period.

Malcolm told the court that the alleged fraud had enriched Modi and his family. One of the shell companies - Pacific Diamonds - had at one point paid out USD 48 million dollars to Modi himself, some USD 150 million to his father and a further USD 21 million to his brother in law Deepak.

"The simple and stark fact is that Modi used three partnership companies to acquire billions of dollars worth of credit which was entirely unsecured and LoUs were issued for wholly bogus trade. While the defence claims this is a mere commercial dispute, there is a plethora of evidence to point to a ponzi-like scheme where new LoUs were used to repay old ones," Malcolm said.

Modi laid the groundwork and took various steps to ensure that the fraud would go undetected for example by registering the shell companies in the UAE`s Ajman Free Zone which does not require companies to file audited accounts.

The funds fraudulently obtained were also recycled through various other companies located in Hong Kong, India and the UAE using the very same jewellery that had made Modi a globally recognized Diamantaire.

Once the fraud was discovered at PNB, Modi and a number of accomplices scrambled to hide their tracks, Malcolm said, by perverting the course of the investigations launched by the Central Bureau of Investigation and the Enforcement Directorate.

This included relocating a number of "directors" of the shell companies from the UAE to Cairo Egypt in 2018 where they were threatened and coerced into providing witness statements exonerated Modi.

The court was told that this particular effort was led by Modi`s brother Nihal Modi, an effort that ultimately came to light after one of those forcibly detained in Cairo recorded some of the conversations between himself and Nihal Modi. One of the most explosive moments of the trial had come in early 2020 when the court was played some of those recordings.

Malcolm also told of the elaborate steps taken by Modi, his associates and several employees of the PNB in order to avoid detection - including falsifying documents and creating elaborate but ultimately fictitious paper trails for the LOU's.

In response to Modi`s defence team contends that the transactions, including the issuance of LOU`s on "verbal" contracts between Modi and the bank, were entirely legitimate and above board. Clare Montgomery QC, Modi`s lawyer, also told the court that the so-called shell companies were no such thing and were trading property.

The court had earlier been shown documents that suggested they did. Perhaps the most extraordinary moment of the final day of this extraordinary trial came when Montgomery told Judge Goozee that what transpired in Cairo, Egypt did not amount to "witness intimidation" because they were not witnesses but rather "suspects".

She told the court that Modi and or his representatives were "perfectly able and had a right to offer them advice as co-accused" in the investigations launched by the Indian government.

Apart from charges relating to defrauding PNB through the use of fraudulent loan agreements to the tune of USD 2 billion, Modi also faces charges of money laundering, destruction of evidence and witness intimidation. While Judge Goozee will rule on the February 25, Modi is expected to pursue a long and exhaustive appeals process in the UK.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said the nation would continue to export medicines including vaccines.

India is currently developing two indigenous COVID-19 vaccines.

In his address at the inauguration of the 16th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) Convention, Modi said the country is among the nations with the lowest fatality rate and the highest recovery rate, adding India is ready with not one but two made-in-India coronavirus vaccines for the protection of humanity.

"Being the pharmacy of the world, India has supplied important medicines to all those in need in the world in the past and is also doing so now. The world is not only waiting for Indian vaccines but is also watching how India runs the world biggest vaccination programme," he said.

Modi also said that during the pandemic, Indians showed their capabilities and the way the country stood together was unparalleled.

He said India is using technology to defeat corruption and crores of rupees are being directly transferred to beneficiaries' bank accounts.

"Today we have been connected with the internet from various corners of the world but our minds are always connected with 'Maa Bharti'," he said.

"I have had a dialogue with several heads of states who told me how Indian diaspora has extended a helping hand in those countries and provided leadership in extending assistance even in these difficult times," Modi said.

"This was a matter of pride for me."

He also lauded the Indian diaspora for providing assistance in the battle against coronavirus in India.

Modi told the Indian diaspora that the country always stands with them and pointed out that over 45 lakh people were rescued under the government's Vande Bharat mission during the pandemic.

Modi also asserted that if democracy is most strong, vibrant and lively anywhere in the world, it is in India.

"When India got Independence then it was said that such a poor and under-literate country will disintegrate and democracy was impossible here. Today's truth is that India is united and if democracy is most strong, vibrant and lively anywhere in the world, it is in India," he said.

Another five Covid-19 patients died in a blaze in a clinic in Rajkot in November.

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro asked Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to expedite a shipment of AstraZeneca's COVID-19 vaccine amid broader delays to the vaccine's arrival in&nbsp;Brazil, according to a letter on Friday.

Bolsonaro's letter, released by his press office, comes amid growing pressure to speed up&nbsp;Brazil's vaccine rollout and end the world's second-deadliest coronavirus outbreak. Critics say the immunization campaign is running behind regional peers, and they question why the government has not moved more quickly.

"To enable the immediate implementation of our National Immunization Program, I would appreciate ... the supply to&nbsp;Brazil, with the possible urgency and without jeopardizing the Indian vaccination program, of 2 million doses," Bolsonaro wrote in the letter, shared by his press office.

His message to Modi comes as the federally funded Fiocruz biomedical center said on Friday that the active ingredients needed to fill and finish millions of doses of AstraZeneca's coronavirus vaccine in&nbsp;Brazil, previously slated to arrive in the country on Saturday, may not land until the end of the month.

Fiocruz, which was counting on the shipment Saturday to supply the government with doses this month, said it was in talks to import more finished doses of the vaccine, likely from India on top of the 2 million it has already ordered.

A source involved said the active ingredient is ready to be shipped to&nbsp;Brazil&nbsp;but is waiting for an export license from China, where it is produced.

Earlier, Fiocruz requested an emergency use authorisation for AstraZeneca vaccines coming from India, which are expected to arrive in&nbsp;Brazil&nbsp;in the middle of this month.

Noting India's image as the world's pharmacy, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said Saturday it is ready with two locally manufactured COVID-19 vaccines to "protect" humanity, and asserted the world is not only waiting for them but also watching as to how the nation runs the globe's biggest vaccination programme.

In his address at the inauguration of the 16th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) Convention, Modi also said that if democracy is most strong, vibrant and lively anywhere in the world, it is in India despite the grim forecasts about its survival in the country at the time of independence. He urged Indian diaspora to use more and more made-in-India products, saying it will inspire confidence among those living around them to use these items as well.

Indian diaspora has a crucial role in boosting 'brand India' as the country advances towards self-reliance, the prime minister said. Talking about India's fight against the coronavirus pandemic, he said the country is among the nations with the lowest fatality rate and the highest recovery rate.

"Being the pharmacy of the world, India has supplied important medicines to all those in need in the world in the past and is also doing so now. The world is not only waiting for Indian vaccines but is also watching how India runs the world's biggest vaccination programme," he said. Solutions prepared by India will benefit the entire world, the prime minister said, adding the country's pharma industry has shown that if the nation is capable in any field, this helps everyone. Lauding the contribution of Indian diaspora to the country they live in, Modi said he spoke to a number of heads of states in recent months, and they especially noted as to how Indians, be it doctors, paramedics or other citizens, have served their society.

Modi said he felt very proud about the praise for Indian diaspora and also lauded them for their contributions to the PM-CARES Fund, which has been used to boost health infrastructure in the country. He also urged Indian missions abroad and the diaspora to work to prepare a portal to feature those members of the immigrant Indians who had an important role in the country's freedom struggle.

He said India is using technology to defeat corruption and crores of rupees are being directly transferred to beneficiaries' bank accounts. India has shown in the field of renewable energy that a developing country can also take the lead, he said, adding the country's mantra of one sun, one world, one grid' is appealing to the world. "When India got Independence it was said that such a poor and under-literate country will disintegrate and democracy was impossible here. Today's truth is that India is united and if democracy is most strong, vibrant and lively anywhere in the world, it is in India," he said. Modi told the Indian diaspora that the country always stands with them and pointed out that over 45 lakh people were rescued under the government's Vande Bharat mission during the pandemic. Earlier, the keynote address at the 16th PBD Convention 2021 was delivered by chief guest Chandrikapersad Santokhi, the President of Suriname. The theme of 16th PBD Convention 2021 is "Contributing to Aatmanirbhar Bharat".

The Jammu and Kashmir administration has banned the entry of poultry into the union territory following the outbreak of bird flu in neighbouring states.

An order issued by principal secretary, agriculture and animal husbandry department, said, "in the wake of the spread of bird flu in neighbouring states of J&amp;K as a measure of abundant precaution and view of the declaration of whole J&amp;K as 'controlled area' for bird flu disease, the government of UT of J&amp;K imposes complete ban on import of live birds, including poultry and unprocessed poultry meat for any purpose into the union territory of J&amp;K with immediate effect till 14-01-2021."

Although there have been no confirmed cases of bird flu in J&amp;K in the Rajouri district of the Jammu region, several crows were found the dead following which authorities have taken their samples for testing.

Every year thousands of migratory birds from Europe and other parts of the world make Kashmir their home and with the fresh snowfall, experts believe it’s hard for them to find survival food.

“We believe since marshy lands are frozen, waterbodies covered with snow, several migratory birds have moved to states like Punjab which could be troubling because they will return,” said an official adding that a close eye is being kept on the situation.

Experts have told WION that migratory birds cannot be a primary source of infection as they have arrived in September. “But with the snow and cold condition, mixing of these birds with local ducks and geese population in local waterways outside the protected zones can cause havoc among the migratory bird population,” he said adding that “worrying part is the illegal hunting of these birds which can transmit the disease.”

Four states in India have reported the outbreak of bird flu following which the Centre has also asked states to be prepared for any eventuality.

Lithium is a metal of utmost importance. It is everywhere today. It's the juice that powers our smartphones, tablets, cameras, laptops and even cars. This element is the driver of the technology age. And it could dictate the future of civilization.

Lithium is used to make batteries. Almost everything today and tomorrow, will run on batteries.

<div class="videoWrapper trancodeVideo"><iframe allowfullscreen="" autoplay="1" class="includeVideo" frameborder="0" height="350" src="https://www.wionews.com/videos/gravitas-india-is-betting-big-on-this-metal-for-self-reliance-355481/embed" style="width:100%;max-width:560px;" width="560"></iframe></div>

India plans to buy Lithium to ensure supplies that could potentially last decades and make India self-reliant. New Delhi has started a massive effort to make India a world leader in Lithium batteries.

A giant stockpile will allow Indian companies to make batteries for all the gadgets.

The strategy to acquire Lithium has three steps.

First, secure supplies from the largest reserves in the world.

Two, build infrastructure to process Lithium, Like refineries.

And third, leverage alliances to enter the global markets.

India is working on all three fronts.

First, the supplies.

New Delhi is going straight to the source. Argentina, Chile and Bolivia have largest stockpiles of Lithium.

A new company namely Khanij Bidesh India Limited. It was incorporated by three state-owned companies NALCO, Hindustan Copper and Mineral Exploration Limited.

Khanij Bidesh India limited has a very specific mandate. It will acquire strategic mineral assets like Lithium and Cobalt.

The foundation has already been laid This company inked a pact with a firm in Argentina.

Together they'll hunt for reserves. Chile and Bolivia are the two other potential sources.

As of last year, India was the largest importer of Lithium-ion batteries. This is the most commonly used battery in portable electronics like smartphones and tablets.

Since 2016, there has been a four fold jump in imports. India bought batteries worth 1.2 billion dollars in 2019-20. A large chunk of this business went to China. India was buying batteries from China.

Of course, we want to change that India now wants to make batteries at home. But, it needs raw materials first. So it is reaching out to Argentina, Chile and Bolivia that are the top three countries with the largest lithium reserves in the world.

Now to step two of India's strategy, infrastructure.

India will build its first Lithium refinery in Gujarat. A state-owned company will invest one thousand crore Rupees for this. That's more than one hundred million dollars.

The facility will process Lithium ore to produce battery-grade Lithium.

That brings us to step three, competing in the global markets.

For this, India will have to eat into China's global market share. Reports say Chinese firms control almost half of the global Lithium production.

And China has a 73 per cent share in global cell manufacturing capacity.

It's time to change that.. &nbsp;

India is making the moves. Australia wants to collaborate with India. The Australian High Commissioner in India Barry O'Farrell issued a statement this week.

He said India and Australia both stood to gain from the promise of expanding trade in Lithium.

Australia is one of the largest producers of Lithium. It has a reserve of more than six million tonnes. India could leverage these supplies. And Australia is ready to offer them.

The envoy said, Australia was well placed to support India's ambitions around the development of new economic sectors.

This is a tough game, ramping up manufacturing depends on investment. But the biggest challenge here is the procurement of Lithium. Lithium makes up only 0.002 per cent of the earth's crust. The supply is scarce. And securing that is India's top priority.

Lithium is a metal of utmost importance. It is everywhere today. It's the juice that powers our smartphones, tablets, cameras, laptops and even cars. This element is the driver of the technology age.

But the biggest challenge here is the procurement of Lithium. Lithium makes up only 0.002 per cent of the earth's crust. The supply is scarce. And securing that is India's top priority.

India makes moves to tackle Chinese dominance in Lithium market

More than &nbsp;2 million electric vehicles were sold in 2019 globally. India wants to make transition to electric vehicle. One, because its the future. And two because we need clean air. The government has been at it. In 2019, India announced a tax cut to encourage people to buy electric vehicles.

<div class="videoWrapper trancodeVideo"><iframe allowfullscreen="" autoplay="1" class="includeVideo" frameborder="0" height="350" src="https://www.wionews.com/videos/gravitas-indias-electric-vehicle-strategy-355482/embed" style="width:100%;max-width:560px;" width="560"></iframe></div>

Sales grew by 20 per cent in just a year.

The total number of elecric vehicles (EVs) sold in 2019 was 1.56 lakh.

Of these, 1.52 lakh were two-wheelers. 3,400 were electric cars. And there were 600 electric buses.

India has a long way to go. 2021 is expected to be a defining moment for EVs in India. Most major automobile players are launching electric vehicle models.

Experts say, the biggest market is still for 2-wheelers. India aims to increase the number of EVs by 30 per cent by the end of this decade.

So, there's a plan in place. There's demand. But there is also a problem.

There's no Lithium. The element is not usually found in this part of the world. So while india manufactures most of the components of an EV at home. It relies on China, Taiwan and Japan for Lithium-ion batteries.

The import adds to the cost of an EV &nbsp;and stands in the way of India's goal number 2, which is to become a global hub for making EVs.

Currently, China holds that spot. It is the world's largest electronic vehicle maker. But countries are now distancing themselves from China and for India, it's an opportunity both, to expand its manufacturing secto and become Atmanirbhar, or self-reliant.

The task before india is four-fold.

First, to access Lithium outside China.

Second, to process Lithium and make Lithium-ion batteries at home.

Third, to find alternatives to this technology. Becuase lithium reserves are limited.

And fourth, to become the world's top manufacturer of EVs.

The govt has already announed a 1.4 billion dollar plan to pave that path. This was in 2019.

A lot has happened since.

Number 1, India is setting up its first Lithium refinery in Gujarat.

Number 2, A joint venture called Khanij Bidesh India Limited- or KABIL - has been formed between three state-run companies.

Its objective is to acquire Lithium and Cobalt mines overseas.

Number 3, India has inked a pact with an Argentinian firm for Lithium.

So, india is already looking beyond China.

Number 4:

According to reports, India's second-biggest traditional battery maker Amara Raja is looking to build a Lithium-ion assembly plant.

Number 5:

Suzuki motor Corp, along with Toshiba, and Denso are setting up a Lithium-ion battery manufacturing plant in India.

So to come back to the question of India's strategy. India has set its goal. It knows its challenges. And has accordingly come up with a long-term plan. A plan that goes beyond EVs and Lithium

To encorporate alternative fuel, infrastructure for consumers at home. And also the plan of becoming the world's top EV manufacturer.

India's Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari summed it up at WION's E-Mobility Summit in 2019. EVs will hit 10 per cent of the global passenger vehicle sales by 2025. That means that 10 per cent of the vehicles sold the world over will be electric. By 2040, almost 60 per cent of the vehicles sold globally will be electric.

India is plugging into the future with a strategy to become the world's top EV manufacturer.

India will chair the crucial Taliban and Libya sanctions committees and the Counter-Terrorism Committee of the UN Security Council during its tenure as non-permanent member of the powerful 15-nation UN body.

India, which has been at the forefront of the years-long efforts to reform the UNSC, began its two-year tenure at the Council on Friday last.

"The UN Security Council establishes subsidiary bodies on specific issues, including on the sanctions regimes.

"I'm happy to announce that India has been asked to chair three important committees of the Security Council, which include the Taliban Sanctions Committee, Counter-Terrorism Committee (CTC) and the Libyan Sanctions Committee,"&nbsp;India's Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador T S Tirumurti said in a video message on Thursday.

Tirumurti said the Taliban Sanctions Committee, also known as the 1988 Sanctions Committee, has always been a "high priority"&nbsp;for India, keeping in mind the country's strong interest and commitment to peace, security, development and progress of Afghanistan.

?Our chairing this committee at this juncture will help keep the focus on the presence of terrorists and their sponsors threatening the peace process in Afghanistan. It has been our view that peace process and violence cannot go hand in hand,? he said.

Tirumurti will chair the CTC in 2022, the year in which India will commemorate the 75th anniversary of its independence.

"India will also chair the Counter-Terrorism Committee in 2022, which coincides with the 75th anniversary of India's independence. The chairing of this committee has a special resonance for India, which has not only been in the forefront of fighting terrorism, especially cross-border terrorism, but has also been one of its biggest victims,"&nbsp;he said.

Tirumurti said the Libya Sanctions Committee, also called the 1970 Sanctions Committee, is a very important&nbsp;subsidiary body of the Council, which implements the sanctions regime, including a two-way arms embargo on Libya and assets freeze, a travel ban and measures on illicit export of petroleum.

"We will be assuming the chair of this committee at a critical juncture, when there is international focus on Libya and on the peace process,"&nbsp;he said.

The three committees are highly significant subsidiary bodies of the UNSC and India chairing them is a ringing endorsement of the country's leadership to steer the panels. India is a leading voice at the UN in the fight against the global scourge of terrorism, particularly the threat posed in the region by cross-border terrorism emanating from Pakistan.

India has underscored that the fight against terrorism will be a key priority for it as it sits at the UN high-table for the 2021-22 term.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said as a Council member, India will not hesitate to raise its voice against the enemies of humanity, including terrorism and will always speak in support of peace, security and prosperity.

Former Indian Ambassador to the UN, Hardeep Singh Puri, had chaired the CTC for the term 2011-12 when India was last in the UNSC as the non-permanent member.

The CTC, established in the wake of the 9/11 terror attack in the US, works to bolster the ability of UN member states to prevent terrorist acts both within their borders and across regions. It is assisted by the Counter-Terrorism Committee Executive Directorate (CTED), which carries out the policy decisions of the body, conducts expert assessments of each member state and facilitates counter-terrorism technical assistance to countries.

Tirumurti thanked Permanent Representative of St Vincent and the Grenadines Ambassador Rhonda King, who, as the chair of the informal Working Group on Security Council Working Methods, had steered this process to its logical conclusion.

The 1988 Sanctions Committee relating to Taliban oversees the sanctions measures imposed by the Security Council.

Individuals and entities are designated on the 1988 Sanctions List as individuals, groups, undertakings and entities associated with the Taliban in constituting a threat to the peace, stability and security of Afghanistan.

The committee designates individuals and entities for participating in the financing, planning, facilitating, preparing or perpetrating of acts; supplying, selling or transferring arms; recruiting and supporting acts or activities of groups, undertakings and entities associated with the Taliban. The listed entities and individuals are subject to an assets freeze, travel ban and arms embargo.

Under the Libya Sanctions Committee, all member states are required to prevent the sale or supply of arms and related material to Libya; prevent the entry into or transit through their territories of all listed individuals; freeze all funds, other financial assets and economic resources that are owned or controlled, directly or indirectly, by the listed individuals or entities.

The Flag State of a designated vessel is required to direct the vessel not to load, transport, or discharge petroleum, including crude oil and refined petroleum products, from Libya, among other measures.

In 2021, India, Norway, Kenya, Ireland and Mexico join non-permanent members Estonia, Niger, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Tunisia and Vietnam and the five permanent members China, France, Russia, UK and the US in the Council. It is the eighth time that the country has had a seat on the powerful horseshoe table.
