"Luis Enrique and Luis Campos saved me, I wouldn't have set foot on the pitch again without them. Just the fact I was playing was a great source of pride, but it's certain that next year I won't be satisfied with a year like that," said Mbappe.

The forward said although he wasn't 'unhappy' at the Parisian club, there were certain people that made him feel that way.

"At PSG I wasn't unhappy, that would be biting the hand that feeds you, and spitting in the face of all the people who defended me, but things and people made me unhappy," he added.

"They [the club] made me understand that I wouldn't play, they told me to my face, they told me violently," said Mbappe. The 25-year-old revealed that if it wasn't for PSG coach Luis Enrique and sporting director Luis Campos, he wouldn't have been 'saved'. Despite the off-field drama, Mbappe finished the season as the highest-scoring player in Ligue 1 for the sixth consecutive time while helping PSG win the league trophy. He was also instrumental in the club reaching the semifinal of the UEFA Champions League. The heroics with PSG notwithstanding, Mbappe joined Madrid after a lengthy transfer drama, earlier this week. He is expected to pocket $38 million a season in addition to the hefty 'undisclosed' signing bonus, according to reports in Spain. (With inputs from agencies)

England manager Gareth Southgate said Brentford striker Ivan Toney will get some minutes in their friendly against Iceland on Friday but getting captain Harry Kane back up to speed ahead of the European Championship takes precedence.
It will be a summer of fresh starts for Barcelona as they try to challenge Real Madrid at the peak of their powers with plans already set for the transfer window. While the club is fighting with financial constraints which led to the sacking of head coach Xavi Hernandez after the 2023-24 season, it now plans to revive its fortunes and will look to wrap the transfer business early. Part of that plan includes keeping both Joao Cancelo and Joao Felix at the club who were on-loan at Barcelona.

Hansi Flick gives green light

After Xavi's sacking, the Catalonian giants board wasted no time in appointing Hansi Flick as their new manager. The new manager has given the green light to keep both Cancelo and Fleix at the club while their parent sides are already in negotiation to get rid of them on the wage bill. However, the club will have to tackle Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations of La Liga and UEFA which could make things a little complicated.

As things stand, Barcelona can’t register their new signing before they sell players or agree to sign them on lower salaries. This means the club will have to sell players or loan them out with their salaries covered by the new club.

Last season Barcelona had to loan out Ansu Fati and sell Ousmane Dembélé to create space for new arrivals. Barcelona did not spend a penny on the big three arrivals of Cancelo, Felix and İlkay Gündoğan with the latter being a free transfer from Manchester City.

What needs to happen for Cancelo, Felix to stay?

Reports have stated that Barcelona’s current financial situation has seen them unable to register new manager Flick with La Liga. For Cancelo and Felix to stay, the club needs to again sell homegrown players or loan them out to create space on the balance sheet. Selling homegrown players offers the best deal as they would account for zero loss on the balance sheet.

If the wage bill is still not fixed, both Cancelo and Felix might have to take pay-cut which could help the club in registering them. Another option is to ask the parent club like Manchester City in Cancelo’s case to terminate their current contracts and sign them for free while also registering them for lower salaries.

Mbappe to wear No.9?

According to several reports, Mbappe will don the No.9 kit at Real Madrid after it was revealed that Luka Modric will continue for another year. This meant that Modric would continue to wear No.10 for the 2024-25 season while Mbappe could be handed the vacant No.9 at the club. All Premier League rule changes and major broadcast and commercial proposals require the approval of at least two-thirds of those who vote or 14 of the 20 clubs. If City are successful in their legal fight, it could enable the richest clubs to value their sponsorship deals without independent assessment, further widening the financial gulf within the English top flight. The Times said between 10 and 12 clubs had come forward, providing either witness statements or letters detailing evidence, in support of the Premier League's defence against City's claim. The Times said City are suing the Premier League for damages, referring to losses incurred as a result of the existing rules. City say the rules were imposed at the instigation of rival clubs reacting to the Saudi takeover of Newcastle, which took place in 2021, with the aim to "safeguard their own commercial advantages", according to the report. City have accused rival teams of "discrimination against Gulf ownership", citing the comments of one senior club executive, The Times said.

Manchester City midfielder Kevin De Bruyne has provided major hint on a potential move to Saudi Arabia as he enters the final stretch of his professional career. The Belgian's contract with City expires at the end of next season and so far, there have been no discussions to sign an extension.

The Saudi clubs have been eyeing De Bruyne for a long time but have refrained from taking the plunge owing to his high-profile status. However, the situation might change as De Bruyne in a recent interview to Belgian newspaper Het Laatste Nieuws said he remains open to the idea of moving to Saudi Arabia.

"At my age you have to be open to everything. You're talking about incredible amounts of money in what may be the end of my career. Sometimes you have to think about that," said De Bruyne.

'If I play there for two years, I will be able to earn an incredible amount of money. Before that I had to play football for 15 years. I may not even reach that amount yet. Then you have to think about what that could mean next. But at the moment I haven't had to think about that yet," he added.

De Bruyne said he has spoken extensively about a move out of Manchester with his wife Michele Lacroix, who is said to be receptive to an ‘exotic adventure’.

"I still have one year left on my contract, so I have to think about what could happen. My eldest is now eight years old and knows nothing but England," said De Bruyne.

"He also asks how long I will play for City. Once the moment comes, we will have to deal with it in a certain way," he added.

De Bruyne's legacy

De Bruyne has been one of the most influential midfielders in the league since he returned to England in 2015 after a spell with Bundesliga side VfL Wolfsburg. De Bruyne has since won the UEFA Champions League, six Premier League titles, five League Cups and two FA Cups.

The Belgian spent the majority of the first half of the last season sidelined due to a hamstring injury but hit top form as soon as he returned to the team in January. His goal and assist against Newcastle United helped City pull off a comeback win that started their quest for an unprecedented fourth consecutive Premier League title.

While De Bruyne continues to stack up the assists column, he has considerably slowed down in the middle of the pitch, suggesting that he might be nearing the end of his prime. At such a stage in life, it makes sense for an athlete to secure the bag and ensure maximum returns out of a short playing career.

Kylian Mbappe joins Real Madrid on five-year deal after dramatic transfer saga

Spanish club Real Madrid is set to announce the historic signing of France striker Kylian Mbappe imminently, later on Monday (June 3). In the recent few days, there has been a lot of noise on Mbappe joining Madrid, after he announced the end of his stint at Frenchclub Paris-Saint Germain (PSG). Mbappe, who has already agreed terms with Real Madrid on a lucrative transfer, has given his nod to a five-year contract that will see him earn $16.2 million a year after tax.

According to the renowned Italian football journalist Fabrizio Romano, the announcement is set to happen later today -- as confirmed by Mbappe during his meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron. At present, Mbappe is at a training camp with the national team ahead of Euro 2024, where he met Macron, on Monday, and confirmed that the announcement will happen very soon.

It is to be noted that Madrid, who clinched a record-extending 15th UEFA Champions League title on Saturday (June 1), have been long-admirers for Mbappe. The Spanish club have been eager to sign the France captain, however, he was committed to a new two-year deal at PSG. Nonetheless, as soon as the 25-year-old refused to activate a one-year extension in his PSG contract, Madrid pounced on the opportunity to avail his services (for $16.3 million) at the earliest.

It is to be noted that Mbappe departs PSG on a free transfer (signing-on bonus is 85 million pound). Hence, the French club will be incurring huge losses. PSG will lose huge money on a player for whom they turned down an over $200 million offer from Madrid in 2021.

NO MBAPPE IN FRANCE OLYMPICS SQUAD

Mbappe's dreams of representing France in the forthcoming Paris Olympics also ended on Monday with coach Thierry Henry announcing that Madrid won't release their 'soon-to-be-announced' star player for the mega event. In a press conference, Henry said, "Real Madrid were really straightforward about the Olympics. The last time I received so many rejections was at the university. There have not even been negotiations. You go, you ask, they say no and you leave."

🚨👀 Kylian Mbappé confirms his move to Real Madrid is set to be announced “tonight”. pic.twitter.com/d8UfaeRHdb — Fabrizio Romano (@FabrizioRomano) June 3, 2024 × It is to be noted that Mbappe departs PSG on a free transfer (signing-on bonus is 85 million pound). Hence, the French club will be incurring huge losses. PSG will lose huge money on a player for whom they turned down an over $200 million offer from Madrid in 2021.
German men's football team head coach Julian Nagelsmann has slammed a public broadcaster for conducting a survey where participants were quizzed if they preferred more white players in the squad.

Indian men's football team head coach, Igor Stimac has claimed that the upcoming World Cup qualifier match against Kuwait could change the 'careers' of his players. India desperately need a win to keep their hopes alive of qualifying for the third round of World Cup qualifiers but the recent form suggests that the home side will have to play out of their skins to make it happen.

The match, scheduled for Thursday (Jun 6) at the iconic Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata would pit the two teams who have met on three occasions in the last year.

Vinicius Junior has strengthened his Ballon d'Or credentials after firing Real Madrid to a record-extending 15th UEFA Champions League title on Saturday (Jun 1). In doing so, the forward equalled the record set by Lionel Messi in the knockout stages of the tournament.

According to Opta, after his goal in Saturday's final, Vini Jr. took his goal tally in the knockouts of the continental tournament to 11. Overall, he now has 22 goal involvements, including 11 assists, which is the joint most by any player before turning 24, alongside Messi.

Vinicius Junior has strengthened his Ballon d'Or credentials after firing Real Madrid to a record-extending 15th UEFA Champions League title on Saturday (Jun 1).

Messi won his first Ballon d'Or at the age of 22 and there is a high possibility that the Brazilian might sweep this year's award which has seen a duopoly of the Argentine and Cristiano Ronaldo over the last decade-and-a-half. 22 - Vinícius Júnior has been directly involved in 22 goals in the knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League (11 goals, 11 assists); the joint-most by any player before turning 24, along with Lionel Messi. Prior to Vinicius' goal, it was Dani Carvajal that opened the scoring by heading the ball from an immaculate delivery, fired in from the corner by a departing Toni Kroos. Dortmund had dominated the game up until then and could have easily scored three or more goals if the forward line had kept its composure. Vini deserves the Ballon d'Or: Ancelotti After the match, Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti, who won his fifth UCL title in his managerial career, said Vinicus should lift the 2024 Ballon d'Or. “Vini Jr. deserves the Ballon d’Or. I’ve no doubts,” said a beaming Ancelotti. Club president Florentino Perez echoed the same sentiments as Ancelotti and backed Vinicius for glory. "Vini Jr. should win Ballon d’Or.
Real Madrid start slow in title-winning run

Entering as the favourites to win the Champions League final, Real were completely outplayed in the opening half after Karim Adeyemi had a series of chances. The German youngster almost opened the scoring at the midway point in the first half but failed to capitalise on a thorough ball. Minutes later he again was at the center of things when Dortmund unlocked Real defence and found Niclas Füllkrug who hit the post.

After a quiet first half, Real made some adjustments and got the reward in the 74th minute when a corner was met with a looping header by defender Dani Carvajal who notched the opening goal. The lead was vital as Dortmund were left with no option back to open the backdoors and attack at full throttle. This left their defense vulnerable and provided Real Madrid with openings to score a second goal.

Eventually, in the 83rd minute, the 2022 Champions League winner Vinicius Jr scored the second goal and sealed Real’s 15th title in the competition. Dortmund had a late Füllkrug effort in the Real goal, but it was ruled out for offside.

Champions League Final: Real Madrid extend European dominance with 15th title after beating Borussia Dortmund

Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti ended the suspense on the club’s goalkeeper issue ahead of the Champions League final against Borussia Dortmund. Ancelotti, participating in his sixth final in Europe’s biggest club competition will opt for experienced Thibaut Courtois who will start in place of the impressive Andriy Lunin who has previously started in all knockout stage games. Real will play Dortmund in London’s Wembley Stadium on Saturday (June 1) as they target their 15th title at the continental level.

Courtois gets the nod ahead of Lunin

"Lunin has had flu, he hasn't been able to train," Ancelotti said in his pre-final news conference on Friday. "He'll travel tomorrow. He'll be on the bench, so Courtois will play."

An Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) had limited Courtois’ participation in the Champions League this season, having spent the majority of the season on the sidelines. However, he will be available for two reasons in the final – his experience playing in big matches while Lunin has only recovered from the flu which kept him away from training with the rest of the squad in the midweek.

Interestingly, this will be Courtois’ first appearance in this season’s Champions League and will once again go for an extended break after missing out on the Belgium squad for the Euro 2024. Ancelotti will hope his first-choice goalkeeper is in great form when he takes guard in his sixth Champions League final. He has an impeccable record in the European Cup finals having lost only once on previous five occasions when Liverpool came from 3-0 to beat his AC Milan side in 2005 in Istanbul.

"A final is a final, it's the most important game and the most dangerous," Ancelotti said. "You have to enjoy being here, and then you start to worry that it could go badly.

"You're close to the most important thing in football, winning the Champions League, and you're scared that it could get away ... The more fear you have, the happier you are when you win it."

Emotions running high ahead of the final

The Champions League final will be a special occasion for several players including Toni Kroos, Nacho Fernandez and Marco Reus. While Fernandez and Reus bid farewell to their respective clubs, this will be Kroos’ final club game before he hangs his boots and departs for Germany where again he will retire from all forms of the game.

Interestingly, speculations are also rife that Luka Modric could announce his retirement from the game at club level and thus vacate his No.10 jersey for new Galactico Kylian Mbappe. He alongside, Kroos, Fernandes and Dani Carvajal could win their sixth Champions League title, joining club legend Paco Gento as the most successful player in the history of the competition.

Ronaldo in tears

Having finished runners-up in the Saudi Pro League (SPL) to Al-Hilal, Ronaldo’s side still had an opportunity to close the season with silverware as they took on Al-Hilal. However, failing to capitalise on the opportunity during the match and ultimately losing in the penalty shootout left Ronaldo in tears. He was seen emotional after losing the final, despite having won top honours in world football. Ronaldo’s hunger and emotions were clearly visible in losing a national cup final despite having a trophy cabinet which includes Premier League, Champions League, La Liga, Serie A and Club World Cup medals.

His side needed a late show to come back into the match having trailed for the majority of the 90 minutes. Former Fulham striker Alexander Mitrovic had given Al-Hilal a valuable lead in the seventh minute and looked on course for the Cup before Al-Nassr’s Ayman Yahya equalised just two minutes before the 90th minute.

Incredibly, Al-Nassr played the majority of the second half with 10 men after former Arsenal goalkeeper David Ospina was sent off in the 56th minute. However, it was Al-Hilal who ended with fewer players on the pitch when Ali Albulayhi and Kalidou Koulibaly were sent off in quick succession towards the end of the match.

No luck for Ronaldo

There was no luck for Ronaldo and Co, however, who scored four times in the shootout but could not prevent Al-Hilal from completing a League and Cup double. Last week Al-Hilal lifted the SPL trophy with a record points tally of 96 in 34 matches. They finished the league season unbeaten and dropped points in only three matches. In 34 matches, Al-Hilal won 31 and drew three in one of the greatest league seasons in the history of club football. Coach Jorge Jesus was rewarded with a new contract as a result earlier in the week.

For Ronaldo, the attention now turns to the UEFA Euro 2024 where he will lead Portugal in Germany and will try to clinch his third international trophy with the side.
