Manchester United are all set to retain the services of manager Erik ten Hag according to close sources from the club. Ten Hag, whose future has been in doubt after a poor season with United where they finished eighth in the Premier League, is likely to be the man at the helm at least for the start of the 2024-25 season. This comes after United recently completed their end-of-the-season review and will continue with the Dutch gaffer having won the FA Cup in his second season in charge.

<h2>United likely to retain Ten Hag</h2>

According to reports, the Dutchman’s review was met with a positive outcome from the United board with new minor stakeholder Sri Jim Ratcliffe happy to keep in charge. According to the reports, the club was also unable to bring in a capable replacement for Ten Hag if he was fired. This was the same case with Bayern Munich who at the end of the season tried to persuade Thomas Tuchel to stay at the German club.

United’s top targets included Thomas Tuchel and Mauricio Pochettino, but the former denied taking the job, according to a few reports on Monday, while the latter’s ability to work with big-name players was questioned.

United were also linked with Roberto de Zerbi and Graham Potter, but neither was worth taking a risk, according to the management reports.

This left United with no option but to keep Ten Hag temporarily while there are no talks of a contract extension on the current deal. Another indication of the Dutchman’s retention was the board’s decision to sell Jadon Sancho.

Both Sancho and Ten Hag had huge differences between them which resulted in the former being frozen out of the first team and later loaned out to Borussia Dortmund for the second half of the season. With his loan deal expiring and the club planning for pre-season, it was expected that both Ten Hag and Sancho would cross paths once again, but it is now reported that the English player will be on an extended leave before any decision is made on his future.

Despite accumulating United’s worst Premier League finish in the eighth place, Ten Hag became the first United manager since Sir Alex Ferguson to win trophies in back-to-back seasons which included the 2-1 FA Cup win over arch-rivals Manchester City in May.

Manchester United likely to retain Erik ten Hag as manager for 2024-25 season - Reports

India's hopes of advancing to the third round of FIFA World Cup Qualifiers ended in despair on Tuesday (Jun 10) as Qatar came from behind to secure a 2-1 win.&nbsp;In front of a boisterous Indian expat crowd at the&nbsp;Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium, the Blue Tigers led the match for 73 minutes before the hosts pulled back a goal, courtesy of a howler of a call from the linesman.&nbsp;

Replays showed the ball had gone beyond the byline after goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu failed to cleanly gather it, fired by a Qatari player. As the Indian players switched off, Qatar pulled the ball back and slotted it into an unguarded, empty Indian net. While the Indian players appealed, the referee and the linesman refused to overturn their decision, which allowed Qatar to dominate the match and eventually score the winner.&nbsp;&nbsp;

India's FIFA World Cup dreams end in despair after 'daylight robbery' helps Qatar win

Former Indian men's football team captain Sunil Chhetri has poured his heart out in an exclusive conversation with WION after India&nbsp;lost out on a place in the third round of World Cup Qualifiers due to a controversial 'ghost goal' in the match against Qatar on Tuesday (Jun 11).&nbsp;

Chhetri said even though the decision by the referee and the linesman was not deliberate, they shouldn't have given the goal, especially when a country's fate depended on it.&nbsp;

"I&nbsp;am proud of the way our team fought. I was so mad at the decision. I don't want to be one of those players who just left and is trying to bash the referees. I know they didn't do it deliberately but come on...it's World Cup Qualifier. The whole country's fate depends on that," Chhetri told WION.

"Of course now you can say it was 2-1, it would have been 1-1 but that goal changed it. When you are away and up for two-thirds of the game 1-0, it is not easy. The whole morale of the team changed," he added.&nbsp;

Chhetri, who retired last week after the match against Kuwait, said India would have tried to hang on to the one-goal lead, especially while playing away from home.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"It is very easy for me to say if we didn't concede we would have been winning 1-0...we don't know what would have happened. I can tell you, as an away team when you are 1-0 up, you are hanging on to win. You are playing the Asian champions, it's not easy.&nbsp;

"These decisions should not have gone against us. Again, I must say it is not a deliberate decision but it was so clear the ball went out. Everyone stood. We have the luxury of the replay but&nbsp;it was so evident, there was no doubt and that goal just changed everything."

<h2>'Wish there was VAR'</h2>

Chhetri lamented that if VAR had been in play, India would have survived the howler of a call and possibly went on to beat the mighty Asian champions.&nbsp;

"People don't understand the impact of the decision, we go 1-0 up, and we go to the third round. It's something that our country has never done. So just imagine the impact of it," said Chhetri.&nbsp;

<h2>Qatar score ghost goal</h2>

Needing to win the match to progress to the next round, India were leading 1-0 until the 73rd minute in the backyard of the Asian champions when the controversial moment took place. Yousef Aymen's header in the 73rd minute was saved by goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh denying the Qataris an equaliser. During the play, Gurpreet’s ricochet with the Qatar attacker saw the ball go behind the line for a goal kick. Footage&nbsp;gathered from various angles from several cameras in the stadium saw the ball clearly cross the line for a goal kick.

However, the ball was picked up by Al Hassan and passed to Aymen who scored from a tap-in. India players including the goalkeeper thought a goal kick would be awarded and the goal would be ruled out. The referee instead went to his assistant and after a brief chat awarded the goal to Qatar which proved crucial to their comeback.

Since there was no Video Assistant Referee (VAR), the on-field referee’s decision stood and the goal was confirmed. Replays and several camera footage would later confirm that the ball had crossed the line and the goal should have been chalked off.

<h2>Consequences of controversial goal</h2>

Before the goal was scored, India were second in the Group A standings and were on the brink of progression to the third round of the FIFA 2026 World Cup Qualifiers. But a late winning goal for Qatar in the 85th for Qatar and another for Kuwait in their qualifier against Afghanistan sealed India’s fate. Kuwait won 1-0 while India lost 2-1 which meant India finished third and will now have to wait for the 2030 FIFA World Cup qualifiers for another shot.

Cristiano Ronaldo struck twice for Portugal as they comfortably beat the Republic of Ireland 3-0 on Tuesday in their final Euro 2024 warm-up friendly.

Joao Felix was also on target as Roberto Martinez's side bounced back from a defeat by Croatia last week to build confidence for the tournament in Germany.

Ronaldo, 39, watched that match from the bench but started against Ireland in Aveiro and came close in the first half before dismantling the visitors in the second.

Veteran defender Pepe, 41, set to become the oldest player ever to play at the Euros, also started.

Euro 2016 winners Portugal qualified with a 100 percent record but recent performances had allowed some doubts to creep in.

"The Portuguese expect a lot from Portugal, there's no margin for error, none, they always want Portugal to win because of the generation, the talent there is," said Ronaldo.

"We have to have our feet on the ground and our thoughts in the sky, dreaming of the Euros."&nbsp;

Ronaldo will appear at a record sixth edition of the tournament, having played in his first back in 2004.

"Going back to 2004... my thoughts and my pride remain the same," said Ronaldo.

"Playing for the Portuguese national team, it doesn't get better than this.

"For the Euros we have to think positively, this team has to dream and has been working hard, because just having talent is no use if there's no hard work."

Felix broke the deadlock with a smart finish after a short corner routine in the 18th minute.

Ronaldo almost made it two but his deflected free-kick struck the post.

The Al-Nassr striker appealed for a penalty after falling under pressure and then fired a decent opening straight at Caoimhin Kelleher towards the end of the first half.

Ronaldo did not have to wait much longer to score, pouncing soon after the break with a sublime effort curled into the top corner.

The former Real Madrid marksman soon grabbed another after Diogo Jota found him well placed in the area.

Ronaldo netted a record-extending 130th international goal with another confident finish.

The striker fired inches wide when he might have completed his hat-trick as Ireland, under interim coach John O'Shea, began to tire, although Portugal could not add to their lead.

"The game against Croatia served to bring us down a peg and today we did a great job, it's about following this line," said Felix.

"We have 100 percent confidence on the way to Germany."

Joao Felix was also on target as Roberto Martinez's side bounced back from a defeat by Croatia last week to build confidence for the tournament in Germany. Ronaldo, 39, watched that match from the bench but started against Ireland in Aveiro and came close in the first half before dismantling the visitors in the second. Veteran defender Pepe, 41, set to become the oldest player ever to play at the Euros, also started. Euro 2016 winners Portugal qualified with a 100 percent record but recent performances had allowed some doubts to creep in. "The Portuguese expect a lot from Portugal, there's no margin for error, none, they always want Portugal to win because of the generation, the talent there is," said Ronaldo. "We have to have our feet on the ground and our thoughts in the sky, dreaming of the Euros." Ronaldo will appear at a record sixth edition of the tournament, having played in his first back in 2004. "Going back to 2004... my thoughts and my pride remain the same," said Ronaldo. "Playing for the Portuguese national team, it doesn't get better than this. "For the Euros we have to think positively, this team has to dream and has been working hard, because just having talent is no use if there's no hard work." Felix broke the deadlock with a smart finish after a short corner routine in the 18th minute. Ronaldo almost made it two but his deflected free-kick struck the post. The Al-Nassr striker appealed for a penalty after falling under pressure and then fired a decent opening straight at Caoimhin Kelleher towards the end of the first half. Ronaldo did not have to wait much longer to score, pouncing soon after the break with a sublime effort curled into the top corner. The former Real Madrid marksman soon grabbed another after Diogo Jota found him well placed in the area. ALSO READ | Why is Erik ten Hag growing 'frustrated' with Manchester United board? The striker fired inches wide when he might have completed his hat-trick as Ireland, under interim coach John O'Shea, began to tire, although Portugal could not add to their lead. "The game against Croatia served to bring us down a peg and today we did a great job, it's about following this line," said Felix. "We have 100 percent confidence on the way to Germany." All India Football Federation (AIFF) has written a letter to FIFA and&nbsp;AFC (Asian Football Confederation), urging for investigation and sporting compensation after India lost out on a place in the third round of World Cup Qualifiers due to a controversial 'ghost goal' in the match against Qatar.&nbsp;

AIFF President Kalyan Chaubey said although the result had been accepted 'gracefully',&nbsp;one of the two goals scored against India left a few questions unanswered.

"After the game against Qatar, in consultation with our Chief Refereeing Officer, [we] decided to write to the FIFA Head of Qualifiers, the AFC Head of Referees, the AFC Head of Competitions, and the Match Commissioner for the game, requesting them to look into the grave supervision error caused during the game that practically cost us a place in FIFA World Cup Qualifiers Round 3," Chaubey stated.&nbsp;

Given the severity of the issue that may peg back Indian football by a few years, Chaubey urged the concerned officials to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter.

"Furthermore, we have urged them to explore the possibilities of sporting compensation to address the injustice. Ensuring the integrity of the game is paramount, we truly trust that the FIFA and the AFC will take necessary steps in this regard," he added.&nbsp;

Days after Manchester City went to war with the Premier League by&nbsp;alleging "discrimination" related to the Associated Party Transaction (APT) rules, another top-tier club is expected to follow&nbsp;suit. Man City sued the league over APT rules that were introduced in December 2021 and revised in January 2024.&nbsp;

Aston Villa is believed to be the second club, planning to&nbsp;launch legal action. Nassef Sawiris, Egypt’s richest man and the billionaire owner of the club, said existing regulations on spending capped the 'ambitious owners' from challenging the established elites - referring to the likes of Liverpool, Manchester United and Arsenal.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

"Some of the rules have actually resulted in cementing the status quo more than creating upward mobility and fluidity in the sport. The rules do not make sense and are not good for football,"&nbsp;Sawiris was quoted as saying by Financial Times.&nbsp;

"Managing a sports team has become more like being a treasurer or a bean counter rather than looking at what your team needs. It’s more about creating paper profits, not real profits. It becomes a financial game, not a sporting game," he added.&nbsp;

Aston Villa finished fourth in the Premier League last season and secured a place in the UEFA Champions League after a lengthy hiatus. However, to sustain at the top level, Villa hierarchy argues that it needs to pump more money to refresh the squad which the current rules make difficult.&nbsp;

Erik ten Hag's frustration with the Manchester United board is increasing as uncertainty hangs over his future as the manager of the club. The Dutchman is of the view that the delay by the board to decide his future may affect the transfer plans, putting the club in a perilous position, according to a report in the Telegraph. The top hierarchy at United was all set to fire Ten Hag at the end of the season but the team's improbable FA Cup win against Manchester City made the situation fluid. "Ten Hag has been on holiday, taken immediately after the FA Cup final win against Manchester City, and is still waiting to hear whether he will carry on as manager," the report added. Earlier this week, reports claimed that United's part-owner, Jim Ratcliffe, held a meeting with former Bayern Munich boss Thomas Tuchel to discuss the proposition of taking over Ten Hag's job. However, transfer pundit Fabrizio Romano cleared that Tuchel had rejected the job saying the German manager wanted a sabbatical following his chaotic Bayern stint. English media reports have also claimed that Mauricio Pochettino has also refused to entertain the possibility of becoming United's new manager. Also read | Goodbye Erik ten Hag? Thomas Tuchel meets Manchester United owner over manager job I'll go somewhere else - Ten Hag Ten Hag's future has remained in air since the FA Cup final when reports stated that the United board was waiting for the end-of-the-season assessment to make a decision. However, it has been over a fortnight and United are yet to make any announcement. Despite the uncertainty around his job, Ten Hag was in high spirits after the FA Cup win and said he will take his business elsewhere if he is given the sack. "Two trophies in two years is not bad, three finals in two years is not bad," said Ten Hag. "If they don't want me, then I go somewhere else to win trophies because that is what I do," he added. As things stand, United are likely to wait until the start of pre-season where they could clear who will be the man in charge when the 2024-25 season begins. While Ten Hag has managed to win two trophies in his two-year stay at Old Trafford, the club is yet to display a cogent footballing philosophy. Oftentimes, Ten Hag has been bailed by individual brilliance from players and such a streak for a club of stature like United does not augur well regarding a long-term future. Poland captain Robert Lewandowski will miss his country's Euro 2024 opener this weekend with a thigh injury, the Polish football federation's doctor said on Tuesday (Jun 11).

Lewandowski, 35, will be absent to face the Netherlands on June 16 after suffering the injury in Monday's 2-1 win in a friendly against Turkey.

Swiderski's club team-mate, defender Pawel Dawidowicz, strained his quadriceps during the game.

"After treatment, both players should return to full training within 3-4 days," Jaroszewski.

Indian men's football team head coach Igor Stimac is not thinking about Sunil Chhetri's absence as the side prepares to face Asian champions Qatar away from home on Tuesday (June 11) in the crucial FIFA World Cup Qualifiers tie.

Indian men's football team head coach Igor Stimac is not thinking about Sunil Chhetri's absence as the side prepares to face Asian champions Qatar away from home on Tuesday (June 11) in the crucial FIFA World Cup Qualifiers tie. The Indian side has never qualified for the third round of the FIFA World Cup qualifiers. Anything less than a win on Tuesday would be a body blow to the hopes. However, the challenge is big as India will not have the services of legendary Chhetri who retired last week after the 0-0 draw against Kuwait. "We are not thinking about it (Chhetri's absence). We have played several games over the last five years without him, and we have shown that we can play in a composed manner. We have got other leaders in the side, who now need to step up," said Stimac on the eve of the match. "Of course, Sunil has some great qualities - his personality, leadership skills, football quality, but I am not going to go back to it. This is about the team, not about any individual," he added. Poor World Cup campaign India have had a poor World Cup qualification campaign so far, having won only one match out of the five played. The home loss against Afghanistan earlier this year was possibly the lowest of lows the national team has witnessed under Stimac's tenure who has put his job on the line. The Croatian manager has stated that he will leave his position if the Indian team is unable to qualify for the next round. “If I don’t take India to the third round I will leave, with my pride, with my honour on everything that was done here in the five years of work. I will leave my position to someone else,” Stimac said before the loss against Afghanistan. Also read | 'Will leave my position': Igor Stimac ahead of FIFA World Cup qualifiers match against Afghanistan Prior to the Asian Cup in January this year, Stimac remarked that he prioritised qualification to the third round over the continental cup as it booked a direct entry into the 2027 AFC Asian Cup. However, up until now, it appears that Stimac may have failed on both fronts. India will have to play out of their skins to get a result against Qatar. A draw might be enough if other results go in the favour of the Blue Tigers. (With inputs from agencies)

England manager Gareth Southgate will have unfinished business at the upcoming Euro 2024 as he aims for his maiden trophy with the national side. Southgate, who will take charge of his second European Championship&nbsp;with the Three Lions will be out of contract at the end of the year and will try to clinch the Euro 2024 title. However, he has reckoned that if he does not succeed with the national side and fails to land England’s first international men’s trophy in 58 years, he will be sacked.

<h2>Southgate opens up on future</h2>

"If we don’t win, I probably won’t be here anymore. It might be the last chance,” Southgate said in an interview with the German publication Bild.

"I think about half of the national coaches leave after a tournament – that’s the nature of international football.&nbsp;

"I’ve been here for almost eight years now and we’ve come close so I know that you can’t keep standing in front of the public and saying ‘please do a little more’ because at some point, people will lose faith in your message,” the England manager added.

At the Euro 2020, Southgate’s England side lost the final on penalties to Italy denying him and the national side their maiden European title. However, they will look to get over the line this time with a rich wealth of talent available in the ranks. A young squad led by Harry Kane will see the likes of Cole Palmer, Phil Foden and others stamp their authority at the tournament in Germany.

England will start their campaign on Sunday (June 16) against Serbia before taking on Denmark in a repeat of last edition’s semifinal. England’s final group game will be against Slovenia as they will look to top Group C.

<h2>Can Southgate inspire England to historic win?</h2>

England have enjoyed a successful last few years under Gareth Southgate but have failed to end their trophy drought which is now at 58 years. England have not won a senior men’s international tournament since the 1966 FIFA World Cup in their homeland. Under Southgate, they have reached the semifinal (2018) and quarterfinal (2022) of the last two FIFA World Cups and were runners-up at&nbsp;Euro 2020. It will be interesting to see whether Southgate helps the Three Lions end that drought this summer in Germany.

Manchester United part-owner, Jim Ratcliffe has held a meeting with former Bayern Munich boss Thomas Tuchel as the club hopes to clarify its position on the next manager. The Red Devils are undecided about the future of Erik ten Hag who has made the decision difficult after winning the FA Cup with a depleted squad last month.

Goodbye Erik ten Hag? Thomas Tuchel meets Manchester United owner over manager job

England and Manchester United player Luke Shaw has admitted that he and the medical staff at the club made a mistake with his injury that has put major doubt on his chances of starring in the Euro 2024.

England and Manchester United player Luke Shaw has admitted that he and the medical staff at the club made a mistake with his injury that has put major doubt on his chances of starring in the Euro 2024. Shaw featured for United only 15 times in the 23-24 season and has been struggling to get back to full fitness as the continental championship gets underway next week. Shaw said he pushed himself to play the FA Cup final against Manchester city which further aggravated his injury. Shaw explained that prior to the domestic cup final, a similar mistake was made when he went off with injury at half-time against Aston Villa in February. Despite the injury, Shaw was given the all-clear by the United medical team and the injury flared up in the game against Luton Town. “It’s kind of everyone’s fault. Partly my fault, partly medical staff, I think everyone would admit that. I didn’t train the whole week. The scan came back and there wasn’t too much there. But I didn’t train all week, then trained the day before the game. If the manager asks me to play, I’m never going to say no. I shouldn’t have played," said Shaw. "The circumstances were that I did push to do everything I can to be fit for United, and that's been my whole season, really. In my opinion, I was pushing to try and get back for the games and the final, and I think I pushed too hard," he added. England square up against Serbia in the opening match of the tournament. However, Shaw is not optimistic of making it to the XI as he has only got 'one chance' in the Euro. "I would love to make the first game, but I don't want to rush too quickly because realistically I've only got one chance. If I feel something, then that's it. I don't want that to happen," said Shaw. England were defeated 0-1 by Iceland in the last friendly before the tournament as Southgate's tactical frailties came out in the open yet again. Making a controversial statement on Friday (June 7), Liverpool owner Tom Werner said he wants Premier League matches to be staged in New York. While there are no such plans in process, this adds to the initiative taken by the Spanish and Italian FA, who conduct Super Cup matches abroad in the Middle East. Currently&nbsp;there is no counter reaction to the comment yet from the Premier League, it remains an interesting call to have England’s domestic matches played abroad.

<h2>Liverpool owner makes controversial comment</h2>

"I'm determined one day to have a Premier League game be played in New York City," Werner told the Financial Times.

"I even have the sort of crazy idea that there would be a day where we play one game in Tokyo, one game a few hours later in Los Angeles, one game a few hours later in Rio, one game a few hours later in Riyadh and make it sort of a day where football, where the Premier League, is celebrated,' he further said.

Currently, it is the US sports market that has caught the attention of the European market with NFL and WWE already hosting events in England and other countries. NFL holds at least two matches in England’s Wembley Stadium while they also have an agreement with Tottenham Hotspur which holds another two matches in their stadium.

While the Premier League in near future is no&nbsp;where closer to even having a discussion, it will be interesting to see if such a proposal is put forward. Currently, Spanish Super Cup is held in Saudi Arabia with four teams participating while Italian Super Cup is also held in the Middle East in January.

For now, Werner’s focus will be on the Liverpool side which will have a decisive summer with new manager Arne Slot in charge. The Dutch gaffer was announced as the successor for Jurgen Klopp in May and will look to fill the big void left by him. Werner and Co will have to monitor his performance before giving him full control of the club.

England’s Euro 2024 preparations were severally dented on Friday (June 7) evening after they suffered an embarrassing 1-0 defeat at the hands of Iceland. The contest played at Wembley Stadium offered a good reality check to Gareth Southgate’s men before they travel to Germany for the main tournament. After the match midfielder Declan Rice insisted that there is still work to be done for England if they are to win the Euro 2024.

<h2>Declan Rice claims there is work to be done</h2>

"There's work to be done," said the Arsenal midfielder, 25. When you have that much of the ball, have a couple of clear-cut chances, and get beaten 1-0 at home just before the Euros it isn't ideal. There were a lot of promising performances, we played with a good tempo, always tried to play forward. We have to be a little bit more savvy," he told englandfootball.com. It's not ideal we lost but there are good learning curves we can build on as a team,” Rice said while speaking in the post-match press conference.

England are one of the favourites to win the Euro 2024 considering the wealth of talent they have at their disposal. The unit led by Harry Kane reached the finals in the last edition of the Euro before losing to Italy on penalties. While they want to go one better this time&nbsp;they will have to avoid defeats to smaller teams during the build-up.

The Three Lions on Thursday trimmed their squad down to 26 players which saw some notable absentees including James Madison, Harry Maguire and Jack Grealish. The squad is already without the likes of Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho, but will now have to rely on the current unit to win the Euro 2024.

England will face Serbia in Group C next Sunday in their tournament opener as they look to start on the front foot. Southgate’s men will also face Denmark and Slovenia in their group and will look to advance if they clinch a place in the knockouts.

Chelsea have completed the first summer signing of the season as they completed a deal for Fulham’s Tosin Adarabioyo on Friday (June 7). The deal is a free transfer after the Englishman’s deal expired with Fulham at the end of last season. He will become the first addition to new manager Enzo Maresca’s squad as they try to return to the elites of the Premier League. Chelsea will be playing in Europe in the 2024-25 season after qualifying for the UEFA Conference League.

After signing for the Blues, Tosin said: “Chelsea is a huge club and this is a full-circle moment for me. I was born three miles away from Stamford Bridge and made my professional debut there. I’m very excited and looking forward to helping push the club in the direction we want to go.”

The 26-year-old has signed a four-year deal as he swapped one West London club to the other and will try to become a mainstay at Chelsea. He will be a main addition to the midfield that already consists of Conor Gallagher, Enzo Fernandes and Moisés Caicedo.

Chelsea had a poor start to the Premier League’s 2023-24 season but ended on a high after they finished sixth. They missed out on Champions League football by just six points while also being just three points behind fifth placed Tottenham Hotspur.

The Blues will now look to advance in the transfer window where they are expected to sign a new striker. The list includes the names of Ivan Toney and Victor Osimhen as they are high on the team’s wishlist. While Arsenal are also in the race to sign these players, Osimhen is the likeliest target for the side after he confirmed his desire to leave Napoli.

Antonio Conte will be reportedly interested in signing Romelu Lukaku if Osimhen decides to leave. It is reported that Lukaku has no future at the club and will not partner with Nicolas Jackson next season. This leaves both Chelsea and Napoli discussing a possible swap deal.

India vs Kuwait, World Cup Qualifiers: Sunil Chhetri's retirement party spoiled by dogged visitors

Premier League clubs have voted to keep Video Assistant Referees (VAR) for the 2024-25 season after a vote was held at the&nbsp;annual general meeting in Harrogate on Thursday (Jun 6). The proposal was put forth by Wolverhampton Wanderers last month that triggered the voting.&nbsp;

All the other 19 clubs voted for the technology to continue but suggested that there was room for improvement. In order for VAR to be scrapped, 14 out of the 20 Premier League clubs needed to vote in favour of the proposal.&nbsp;

Wolves released a statement saying they were "disappointed" by the outcome of the vote but welcomed the Premier League's "commitment to improve VAR".&nbsp;

Premier League said as part of the discussions, it was duty of PGMOL, clubs and the league to improve the system's reputation. It also identified six keys areas where VAR needed to be made efficient.&nbsp;

Notably, Premier League confirmed in April that&nbsp;Semi-Automated Offside Technology will be introduced for the 2024 season. The introduction of the technology, seen at the Qatar World Cup will help officials as they would not have manually draw the lines.&nbsp;

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/premier-league-liverpool-blast-pgmol-over-unfair-var-call-release-hard-hit-statement-after-spurs-defeat-641656" target="_blank">Also read | Premier League: Liverpool blast PGMOL over 'unfair' VAR call, release strong statement after Spurs defeat</a>

<h2>VAR history and controversies</h2>

VAR was introduced in the top tier of English football five seasons ago in 2019/20 after its successful implementation in the Russia World Cup. However, since then, the technology has been under constant controversy with clubs often ruing that VAR was not doing what it had set out to correct.&nbsp;

After a string of&nbsp;decisions went against Wolves due to VAR in the 2023-2024 season, the club decided to pursue the route of abolishing the technology.&nbsp;

Premier League clubs have voted to keep Video Assistant Referees (VAR) for the 2024-25 season after a vote was held at the annual general meeting in Harrogate on Thursday (Jun 6). The proposal was put forth by Wolverhampton Wanderers last month that triggered the voting. All the other 19 clubs voted for the technology to continue but suggested that there was room for improvement. In order for VAR to be scrapped, 14 out of the 20 Premier League clubs needed to vote in favour of the proposal. Wolves released a statement saying they were "disappointed" by the outcome of the vote but welcomed the Premier League's "commitment to improve VAR". Premier League said as part of the discussions, it was duty of PGMOL, clubs and the league to improve the system's reputation. It also identified six keys areas where VAR needed to be made efficient. Notably, Premier League confirmed in April that Semi-Automated Offside Technology will be introduced for the 2024 season. The introduction of the technology, seen at the Qatar World Cup will help officials as they would not have manually draw the lines. However, since then, the technology has been under constant controversy with clubs often ruing that VAR was not doing what it had set out to correct. After a string of decisions went against Wolves due to VAR in the 2023-2024 season, the club decided to pursue the route of abolishing the technology. "There is no blame to be placed.
