A crazy fan jumped over the fence and nearly crash-landed on Cristiano Ronaldo as the Portuguese star was making his way to the dressing room after his side's 2-0 defeat to Georgia at Euro 2024 on Wednesday (Jun 26).

A crazy fan jumped over the fence and nearly crash-landed on Cristiano Ronaldo as the Portuguese star was making his way to the dressing room after his side's 2-0 defeat to Georgia at Euro 2024 on Wednesday (Jun 26). The video of the incident has gone viral on social media and shows Ronaldo briefly stopping as the security guard attempted to shield him from the fan. While Ronaldo avoided getting tackled, the security guard was taken down by the supporter. The Portuguese legend, however, was left confused and irritated by the incident, putting his hands up in a questioning manner. Watch the video of the incident here: This is crazy.pic.twitter.com/Rc1eLon23D — The CR7 Timeline. (@TimelineCR7) June 27, 2024 × Previous instances Notably, this is not the first instance at the ongoing European Championship where fans have evaded security to get near Ronaldo. Portugal's match against Turkiye last week was stopped multiple times due to fans storming the pitch and attempting to meet Ronaldo. In the first incident, a boy not older than 10 came running onto the pitch with a phone. The former Real Madrid player posed and smiled with his young fan in the 70th minute of the game. Euro 2024: WATCH | Cristiano Ronaldo fans force delay in Portugal vs Turkiye game Portugal coach Roberto Martinez criticised the actions of the fans saying someday someone with the wrong intention might approach the players. "It is a concern, but today we were lucky as intention of the fans were good," he said. "The fans recognise big stars and icons but there is a very difficult situation if their intentions are wrong and players are exposed. "It shouldn't happen. There is lots of security, so it shouldn't happen. Maybe there is a message to that fans, that this is not the right way [to behave]. The message is that it could get worse for the future and it's not good that the players are so exposed on the pitch," he added. As for the match against Georgia, Portugal were beaten in an empathetic manner by the Georgian side. Napoli star Khvicha Kvaratskhelia gave Georgia the lead in the second minute of the match before Georges Mikautadze converted a penalty in the second half to secure the win. Portugal had already qualified for the Round of 16 prior to the match and will now face Slovenia on Monday (Jul 1) as Ronaldo aims to win his second European Championship. The UEFA Euro 2024 group stage is now in its final lap as teams have started booking their place in the Round of 16 to navigate their path to European glory. From Group C on Tuesday (June 25), Denmark and Slovenia joined England in the R16 but saw the rarest of rare deadlocks&nbsp;which determined the standings in the group. Luckily, the current&nbsp; Euro format allowed Slovenia to take their place in the R16 but it might not have been the case had the rare deadlock&nbsp;occurred in Euro 2012 or editions previous.

<h2>What was the deadlock situation?</h2>

After both Denmark and Slovenia completed their group stage campaign at Euro 2024, both teams were unable to be separated as they finished with a rare case of multiple ties. While England won Group C with five points, Denmark and Slovenia remained unbeaten but both mustered three draws in the process picking up three points from their matches. In this case, UEFA rulings state that head-to-head record becomes the criteria to determine the higher seeding.

	<li>Superior goal difference in all group matches.</li>
	<li>Higher number of goals scored in all group matches.</li>
	<li>If in the last round of the group stage, two teams who are facing each other are tied in points, goal difference and goals scored draw their match,&nbsp;their ranking is determined by a penalty shootout. (This criterion is not used if more than two teams have the same number of points.)</li>

However, none of the above eight criteria separated Denmark and Slovenia. They ended with identical head-to-head, goal difference, goals scored and disciplinary record with six yellow and no red cards.

This meant UEFA had to apply the qualifier standings as the criteria to separate both sides where Denmark had the edge having picked up four points during the Euro 2024 qualification stage compared to Slovenia’s one point.

The third-place finish was good enough for Slovenia to reach the R16 as they had a better record than Hungary and Croatia in the best-performing third-positioned sides. They will next face Portugal while Denmark, a victim of their own success, will face hosts Germany in the R16.

England manager Gareth Southgate is not concerned about his team’s criticism as they look to cement their place as group winners at Euro 2024. England will play Slovenia on Tuesday (June 25), knowing a victory will see them win Group C, having already sealed qualification to the Round of 16 after Monday evening’s result. However, Southgate is not taking the criticism and expects his team to flourish against Slovenia in their final group match.

Euro 2024: Romania, Slovakia enter Round of 16 after drawing last group stage match

Gareth Southgate was targeted by empty plastic cups thrown by angry England supporters after their goalless draw against Slovenia in the European Championship. Fans criticised the Three Lions' performances and also raised questions about Southgate's ability to lead England to win a major trophy.

Coach Southgate faces heat over England's performance

England star Phil Foden has left the Euro 2024 team camp due to a "pressing family matter", the FA announced on Wednesday (Jun 26). Although no&nbsp;additional details were provided, the Manchester City player's departure has been described as 'temporary'.&nbsp;

Foden started all three of England's matches at the European Championship, including Tuesday's goalless draw against Slovenia.&nbsp;

“Phil Foden has temporarily left the England camp and returned to the UK for a pressing family matter,” said an FA spokesperson.

Reports claim that Foden is expected to be back before England's Round of 16 clash against the undecided opponent, scheduled for Sunday (Jun 30)&nbsp;in Gelsenkirchen.&nbsp;

Foden's departure comes in the backdrop of England manager Gareth Southgate claiming that his players were playing in an 'unusual atmosphere', referring to the criticism by fans, pundits and ex-players.&nbsp;

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/football/explained-rare-deadlock-case-emerges-in-euro-2024-as-denmark-finish-above-slovenia-becasue-of-this-rule-735161" target="_blank">Also read |&nbsp;Explained: Rare deadlock emerges in Euro 2024 as Denmark finish above Slovenia because of THIS rule</a>

Although England topped Group C with five points to advance to the Round of 16, they have looked timid on the ball and failed to play an entertaining brand of football.&nbsp;

After the match against Slovenia,&nbsp;boos could be heard around the Olympiastadion Berlin with some reports claiming that fans threw cups towards Southgate as well.&nbsp;

"I understand the narrative towards me. That's better for the team than it being towards them. But it's creating an unusual environment to operate in. I've not seen any other team qualify and receive similar," said Southgate in the post-match interview.&nbsp;

"I understand some of the reactions but it's a strange environment we're playing in," he added.

<h2>Foden fails to stamp his authority</h2>

Foden, named the Premier League Player of the Season&nbsp;as Man City won an unprecedented fourth title on the bounce, has failed to impose himself in the tournament so far.&nbsp;

Despite having played the full 270 minutes, primarily on the left wing, Foden has been unable to create big chances for the England side which has looked dire in front of the goal.&nbsp;

There have been calls for dropping Foden or move him to no.10 position on the right side where he thrived under Pep Guardiola's City. Southgate, however, has stuck largely with the same formation upfront, preferring to tweak the midfield where the likes of Trent Alexander-Arnold and Conor Gallagher have been dealt the&nbsp;short end of the stick.&nbsp;

England star Phil Foden has left the Euro 2024 team camp due to a "pressing family matter", the FA announced on Wednesday (Jun 26). Although no additional details were provided, the Manchester City player's departure has been described as 'temporary'. Foden started all three of England's matches at the European Championship, including Tuesday's goalless draw against Slovenia. “Phil Foden has temporarily left the England camp and returned to the UK for a pressing family matter,” said an FA spokesperson. Reports claim that Foden is expected to be back before England's Round of 16 clash against the undecided opponent, scheduled for Sunday (Jun 30) in Gelsenkirchen. Foden's departure comes in the backdrop of England manager Gareth Southgate claiming that his players were playing in an 'unusual atmosphere', referring to the criticism by fans, pundits and ex-players. After the match against Slovenia, boos could be heard around the Olympiastadion Berlin with some reports claiming that fans threw cups towards Southgate as well. "I understand the narrative towards me. That's better for the team than it being towards them. But it's creating an unusual environment to operate in. I've not seen any other team qualify and receive similar," said Southgate in the post-match interview. "I understand some of the reactions but it's a strange environment we're playing in," he added. Foden fails to stamp his authority Foden, named the Premier League Player of the Season as Man City won an unprecedented fourth title on the bounce, has failed to impose himself in the tournament so far. Despite having played the full 270 minutes, primarily on the left wing, Foden has been unable to create big chances for the England side which has looked dire in front of the goal. There have been calls for dropping Foden or move him to no.10 position on the right side where he thrived under Pep Guardiola's City. Southgate, however, has stuck largely with the same formation upfront, preferring to tweak the midfield where the likes of Trent Alexander-Arnold and Conor Gallagher have been dealt the short end of the stick. Netherlands coach Ronald Koeman said that he'll answer the question about his future if his team fails in the Round of 16 of the ongoing Euro 2024. Koeman's comments came on the back of the Netherlands' shocking 3-2 loss against Austria in the group stage on Tuesday (June 25).&nbsp;

The Netherlands, however, still managed to qualify for the next round but Koeman was left furious. He was asked about his future in the post-match press conference which he bluntly turned down.

"It is not a question that should be addressed now because I don't like to speak about these kinds of questions: what happens if," said Koeman.

"If it happens I will try to have a response. I am responsible for this match, but we are still in the next stage and have to play much better. If we fail, you can ask me this question [about my future] again," the former Barcelona coach added.

The coach was very critical of his side which lost the game despite equalising it twice.

"I can list quite a few mistakes. We started very badly. We did not defend well. We were not aggressive, there was a lack of pressure and we lost the ball as well, particularly at the start so it was very bad.

"The players ran a lot, but not in the positions so it was awful, very bad. We did not control the match. The match against France was reasonable as a team, but today it was appalling,"&nbsp;said the Netherland's coach.

Koeman, however, remained confident of putting up a better performance in the next stage and said: "It is possible with this squad. They have the qualities"

It was, however, Marcel Sabitzer's goal in the 80th minute which gave Austria a 3-2 win against the Dutch.

Euro 2024: Dutch coach Ronald Koeman offers update on future after humiliating loss vs Austria

Substitute Lautaro Martinez grabbed an 88th-minute winner as Argentina finally overcame Chile 1-0 to book their place in the quarter-finals of the Copa America on Tuesday.

Lionel Messi hit the post for Argentina in the first half but the World Cup winners had their goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez to thank for keeping them on level terms before Lautaro's late strike settled a pulsating clash in front of 82,000 fans at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

There were enough openings for the 15-times Copa America champions to get the breakthrough much earlier but a combination of poor finishing and an inspired performance from Chile's 41-year-old goalkeeper Claudio Bravo left the scored deadlocked.

The home of the NFL's New York Jets and New York Giants -- and venue for the 2026 World Cup final -- was transformed into a home venue for Argentina and the expectant crowd saw Messi and company dictate proceedings in the early stages.

Messi's strike partner Julian Alvarez forced Bravo into a save in the 22nd minute with a first-time shot after Nicolas Gonzalez had pulled the ball back from the byline.

Chile were doing a good job of neutralising Messi, closing him down with three players on occassions but the eight-times Ballon d'Or winner was inches away from an opener in the 36th minute with a shot from 25 yards out which clipped the outside of the post.

Bravo did well after the break to parry out a blast at the near post from Nahuel Molina and then showed great reactions to push a fierce Nicolas Gonzalez drive against the bar.

Chile threatened on the counter though and twice Emiliano Martinez had to be at his best to deny drives from Rodrigo Echeverria.

But the decisive moment came when Chile failed to clear an in-swinging corner from Messi and Lautaro Martinez pounced to grab the winner.

<h2>Canada down Peru</h2>

Lautaro should have added a second after a breakaway from Angel Di Maria but in the end the solitary goal was enough to make it two wins out of two for the World Cup winners and book their place in the next round with a game to spare.

In other Copa America action on Tuesday,Jonathan David scored the only goal as Canada reignited their campaign with a 1-0 victory over Peru in sweltering Kansas City.

Lille striker David – who is reportedly being targeted by Premier League sides Manchester United and Chelsea – once again demonstrated his eye for goal with a cool finish to secure all three points for Canada against 10-man Peru at the Children's Mercy Park Stadium.

A game played in scorching afternoon sunshine – with on-pitch temperatures nudging towards 100 degrees Fahrenheit (38 degrees Celsius) – saw one of the two referee's assistants collapse with apparent heat exhaustion just before half-time.

Canada, beaten 2-0 by Argentina in the opening game of the tournament last week, took the lead in the second half after Peru had been reduced to 10 men following the dismissal of Miguel Araujo for a wild foul on substitute Jacob Shaffelburg that sparked a melee amongst players from both teams.

Referee Mario Escobar initially only gave Araujo a yellow card for his ugly studs up challenge on Shaffelburg but the punishment was upgraded after a VAR review.

That dismissal tipped a close game in favour of Canada and the breakthrough finally came on 74 minutes with David's goal from a sweeping Canada counter-attack.

Left-winger Shaffelburg played a sensational first-time cross-field pass to David, who took one touch without breaking stride and then buried a right-foot finish into the bottom corner past Peru goalkeeper Pedro Gallese.

Peru pressed forward in search of an equalizer, but Canada goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau denied Christian Cueva with a fine one-handed reflex save to parry away a volley before saving Paolo Guerrero's injury-time free-kick.

Copa America 2024: Lautaro Martinez's late strike sends Argentina into quarterfinal

England manager Gareth Southgate was met with boos and beer cups thrown by his own fans despite his team topping Group C as Slovenia also progressed to the knockout stages of Euro 2024 thanks to a 0-0 draw in Cologne.

The Three Lions were already assured of a place in the last 16 but can expect more criticism after failing to improve on underwhelming performances in edging past Serbia and drawing with Denmark.

"I get it that they are not happy with me, that is the reality. I am not going to back away from that. I need them behind the team," Southgate said of the supporters' reaction.

"I was not going to back away from going over to thank people for coming and giving the support that they did, but I know that this is causing an issue for the group."

England will have to wait until Wednesday's final group games to find out which of the four best third-placed teams they will face in the last 16.

But more questions will be asked over one of the favourites' ability to end a 58-year wait for major tournament glory as a star-studded forward line was snuffed out by Slovenia.

"I thought we played a lot better than the other games. We couldn't just find that finish but we look forward to the next one," said England captain Harry Kane.

Southgate made a statement with his team selection, resisting the calls to make mass changes as Conor Gallagher replaced Trent Alexander-Arnold in the only alteration from the opening two games.

If the England boss was looking for a reaction by showing faith in the other 10 who have started all three matches in Germany, he was left disappointed.

Slovenia are now nine games unbeaten, which included beating Portugal 2-0 in a pre-tournament friendly.

Declan Rice had highlighted Benjamin Sesko as their big threat on Monday.

Sesko could have been lining up alongside Rice at Arsenal next season had he not shunned interest to extend his contract at RB Leipzig.

The 21-year-old shrugged off a thigh injury to start and had the first chance of the game when he tamely headed straight at Jordan Pickford four minutes in.

<h2>Slovenian celebrations</h2>

It took 20 minutes for England to pose a serious threat and only the offside flag denied them a slick opening goal.

Rice picked out Phil Foden's run but the Manchester City midfielder had strayed beyond the Slovenian defence before squaring for Bukayo Saka to tap in.

Southgate took action at the break as Gallagher was replaced by Kobbie Mainoo.

The 19-year-old added some much needed thrust to the England midfield but they still struggled to turn dominance in possession into chances.

Kane saw a header cleared by Sesko from a corner and Rice flashed a shot wide from the edge of the box.

Southgate answered the call to give Cole Palmer his first minutes of the tournament in the final 20 minutes.

The Chelsea midfielder, who scored 26 goals at club level this season, had England's only shot on target of the second half but failed to seriously test veteran goalkeeper Jan Oblak.

A point was jubilantly celebrated by the Slovenians as it did enough for them to progress as one of the best third-placed sides thanks to three draws from their three games.

Matjaz Kek's men missed out on second place in the group solely due to Denmark's better disciplinary record.

"I didn't expect to be going into the knockout phase," said Kek. "But we showed with our play we deserved to be here and go into the knockouts against one of the favourites for the tournament."

It’s getting hard to find the spirit to watch the games. This is perhaps one of the worst teams in recent years, it has no respectable leaders, only average players for the majority," he posted on Instagram. "I’ve been following football since I was a kid, long before I thought about becoming a player, and I’ve never seen a situation as bad as this. England are yet to stabilise their midfield as Southgate struggles to profile the right players. He has already dropped Trent Alexander-Arnold and Conor Gallagher from the midfield, despite giving them poor conditions to play the natural game they exhibit at the club level. As for the forward line, Southgate has placed Phil Foden on the left flank where he has been relatively neutralised by opposition teams. Harry Kane, who likes coming deep into the midfield to hit the runners behind, has also struggled to conjure up his magic. (With inputs from agencies)

'It's a strange environment': Gareth Southgate's new excuse for poor England performance at Euro 2024

A stunning late finish&nbsp;by Marcel Sabitzer helped Austria sink the mighty Netherlands 3-2 in what was an enthralling contest in the final round of matches in Group D at Euro 2024. The win helped Austria top the table and advance to the Round of 16&nbsp;while the Dutch hopes of qualifying now hang by a slim thread.&nbsp;

Against all odds, Austria stood firm in front of a majority-Dutch crowd at the Olympiastadion Berlin and walked away with the victory, having led through an own goal in the first half.&nbsp;

The Netherlands started the first half passively as Austria&nbsp;smothered the Dutch midfield with their suffocating press. Austrian manager Ralf Rangnick, known as the godfather of gegenpressing (German for counter-pressing), who was sacked unceremoniously by Manchester United a few years ago, showed how capable his teams are when given the opportunity to drill them.&nbsp;

The Men-in-Orange failed to adjust to the tempo of the match and allowed multiple counter-attack opportunities to Austria after losing the ball in their own half. The devastating consequence of Dutch passivity soon arrived as a fizzed cross from Prass on the left side was turned into the goal by a trailing Donyll Malen in the sixth minute.&nbsp;

After the early setback, Koeman could be seen animatedly passing instructions to the players who were being pushed and harried by the Austria midfield.&nbsp;The aggressive intent from Austria meant the Netherlands did manufacture a couple of 1v1 chances in the box but both&nbsp;Tijjani Reijnders and Malen missed out on golden opportunities.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Joey Veerman was particularly bad on the ball -completing only nine passed out of 19 before being hooked by Ronald Koeman in the 35th minute. Xavi Simons, his replacement lifted the tempo but Dutch failed to get a shot on target at the end of the first half.&nbsp;

<h2>Austria keep hitting the Dutch</h2>

After the break, Dutch started the game on front foot and restored the parity through a beautiful, curling shot from Liverpool's Cody Gakpo. Just when it appeared that the Netherlands were growing in the match, Romano Scdmid thumped one past Verbruggen in the 59th minute&nbsp;to give Austria the lead.&nbsp;

Having had a sluggish tournament so far, Memphis Depay stepped up finally for the Dutch side and finished a brilliant goal to bring parity to the scoreline in the 75th minute. However, five minutes later, Sabitzer killed the tie as a defensive lapse from the Dutch backline allowed the midfielder to slot one to the back of the net.&nbsp;

It was a disappointing evening for a sea of Dutch fans, who clad in their traditional vibrant orange, had taken over the streets of Berlin hours before the game, hoping for a second European Championship trophy. After Tuesday's result, the Dutch will hope that they qualify for the next round as one of the top-4 third-placed teams.&nbsp;

Euro 2024: Lacklustre Netherlands beaten by Rangnick's gegenpressing Austria

Italy coach Luciano Spalletti conceded that his side needs to 'do the dirty work' if they were to defend their Euro crown. The comments came after Italy's last-gasp equaliser against Croatia which earned them 1-1 draw on Monday (June 24) and a place in the Round of 16 as well.

"Whenever there is a challenge or a 50-50, we don't win any. It is not a technical question, it comes down to experience, getting into these physical challenges and being willing to do the dirty work. We need to improve on that score," Spalletti said.

The former Napoli coach came out all guns blazing in the post-match press conference in response to questions about Italy's performance in the match.

"We deserved to go through tonight in terms of what we produced out there. We were a bit soft at times during the game, we did not necessarily play our best football," Spalletti said.

"But it was hard to make it through this group. Spain are brilliant, Croatia are excellent. When you drop below the minimum standards like we did in the first half, it is because we feel the pressure of how important the game is.

"Because otherwise it is not possible (to play so poorly). But thus far everything they (the players) have done (at the Euros) has been getting better from my perspective," the Italian coach added.

The game was all but lost for Italy who were trailing 0-1 to Croatia till the 98th minute in the stoppage time. It was Mattia Zaccagni who then scored a goal in the final minutes to salvage a draw for the defending champions.

Italy, in three group stage matches, won one (2-1 against Albania) and lost one (0-1 against Spain) before the draw against Croatia.

Euro 2024: Italy coach wants defending champions to 'do dirty work' after barely making it to Round of 16

It was yet another dramatic evening in the Euro 2024 on Monday (June 24) as defending champions Italy scored a last-gasp equaliser which officially earned them a place in the Round of 16. The result also sees Croatia on the brink of exit as they rely on other results to clinch a place in the knockout stage. However, the result between Italy and Croatia also had England fans smiling as they officially clinched their place in the R16 before even taking the field on matchday 3 against Slovenia.

<h2>Why England are in R16?</h2>

After yesterday’s results, the picture for the R16 became clear as Spain, Italy, Germany, Switzerland and Portugal had their names in the hat. As things stand in Group C, England are currently on four points from two matches with a 1-0 win against Serbia and a 1-1 draw against Denmark. Both Slovenia and Denmark are on two points each while Serbia sit bottom of Group C with one point. Even a defeat for England against Slovenia on matchday 3 won’t have too many bearings as Gareth Southgate’s men cannot finish bottom of the group.

A defeat for England against Slovenia and a win for Serbia against Denmark will see the former finish in third position due to the superior head-to-head record. In this case, England can still qualify for the R16 as one of the four best-finishing third-positioned sides.

<h2>How does the format work?</h2>

According to the Euro 2024 format, all six group winners and all six group runners-up get a direct entry into the R16 as they comprise 12 teams. Four teams that have finished third in their groups will also join these 12 sides depending on who collected more points and have a better goal difference. Assuming England’s worst possible scenario, they cannot finish below the third spot in Group C and will qualify for R16 as one of the four best-performing third-positioned sides.

After Monday evening’s result, Hungary (three points from Group A) and Croatia (two points from Group B) are the two third-positioned sides at Euro 2024. With England’s current tally of four points already better than Croatia and Hungary, even if they finish third in Group C they will end up as one of the four best-performing third-positioned sides which will see them qualify for R16.

In similar circumstances, both the Netherlands and France are also in the R16 as they too cannot finish bottom of the respective groups and will end up in the top four of the third-positioned sides’ tally in a worst-case scenario.

'God chose me': Lionel Messi's humble admission about his footballing abilities

Kylian Mbappe scored a penalty on his return after breaking his nose but Robert Lewandowski's reply meant France and Poland drew 1-1 in their final group game at Euro 2024 on Tuesday.

The result, combined with Austria's 3-2 victory over the Netherlands at the same time, means France finish second in Group D with one win and two draws.

Wearing a mask to protect his injured nose, Mbappe rolled in a spot-kick to put France ahead early in the second half in Dortmund after Ousmane Dembele was brought down in the Poland area.

It was Mbappe's first ever goal at a European Championship, and the first scored by a France player at this year's tournament -- their only prior counter was an own goal by Austria's Maximilian Woeber.

Yet Lewandowski, Poland's all-time top scorer who was himself starting for the first time at Euro 2024 after a thigh injury, equalised from a penalty at the other end 11 minutes from time.

His first kick was saved by Mike Maignan, but Lewandowski was allowed a retake as the France goalkeeper came off his line before the ball had been struck.

France will now head to Duesseldorf for a last-16 tie next Monday against the runners-up in Group E, which will be Belgium, Romania, Slovakia or Ukraine.

More significantly, they are now on the same side of the draw as Portugal, Spain and Germany, which they would have avoided by topping the group.

Often imprecise and lacking in intensity here, the 2022 World Cup runners-up will certainly need to improve on this performance, and their previous group outings, if they are to win the competition.

Poland had already been eliminated before this game, becoming the first team to go out after losing their opening two matches.

This result at least allowed Michal Probierz's side to rescue some pride and gave some cheer to their large support.

<h2>- Griezmann dropped -</h2>

It was not just the return of the masked Mbappe -- who missed France's 0-0 draw with the Netherlands -- that was notable when the line-ups were announced, with Antoine Griezmann unusually left out of the starting XI.

Instead Bradley Barcola got his first start for his country as coach Didier Deschamps went with the front three that played together for Paris Saint-Germain over the past season.

Lewandowski, returning to the stadium where he made his name with Borussia Dortmund a decade ago, had one big chance in the first half, heading wide while unmarked from Piotr Zielinski's cross.

Mbappe spent much of the opening period struggling to get into the game, occasionally stopping to adjust his mask, and removing it entirely during a drinks break in sweltering conditions.

Theo Hernandez was the first France player to test Lukasz Skorupski, starting in goal instead of Wojciech Szczesny who is set to retire from the Poland team soon after the Euros.

Meanwhile Mbappe started to come to life towards the end of the opening half.

On two separate occasions he quickly exchanged passes with Barcola on the left side of the box before having a shot saved by Skorupski.

The Bologna goalkeeper then dived to his left to keep out a trademark Mbappe curler just after the restart, but there was nothing he could do about the penalty which broke the deadlock on 56 minutes.

Dembele's end product had been almost non-existent until he produced a burst of pace on the right as he broke into the box, and all Jakub Kiwior could do was chop him down.

Italian referee Marco Guida immediately pointed to the spot, and Mbappe rolled in his kick before removing his mask as he ran off to celebrate.

Yet Poland did not lie down, and won a penalty of their own when substitute Karol Swiderski was tripped by Dayot Upamecano.

The referee initially waved play on, before changing his mind and pointing to the spot after being coaxed across to the VAR monitor.

Maignan saved Lewandowski's first attempt after a stuttering run-up, but the Barcelona striker made no mistake at the second time of asking.

Rodriguez, whose club career has languished in the decade since he rose to prominence with a dazzling performance at the 2014 World Cup, created both of his team's goals in a deserved Group D victory at the NRG Stadium.

The 32-year-old midfielder, who has played just a handful of minutes for Brazilian club Sao Paulo in the two months leading into the Copa America, set up the opening goal for Colombia in the 32nd minute.

After finding space on the left flank, Rodriguez flighted a pinpoint cross to the far post to pick out Daniel Munoz, who beat Paraguay goalkeeper Rodrigo Morinigo with a firm downward header to make it 1-0.

Ten minutes later Colombia doubled their lead and again it was a goal engineered by the trusty left boot of Rodriguez.

This time the goal arrived from the opposite flank, with Rodriguez swinging in a wicked free-kick that was glanced in by Crystal Palace midfielder Jefferson Lerma.

That made it 2-0 at half-time to leave Colombia firmly on course to extend their unbeaten streak to 24 games.

Colombia continued to carve out the better chances in the second half, but Paraguay set up a nervy finish after Brighton and Hove Albion's Julio Enciso pulled one back in the 69th minute.

Ramon Sosa crossed from the left and Enciso punished slack marking in the Colombia area to hook an angled first-time volley into the bottom corner past Camilo Vargas.

Colombia, however, controlled play after the Paraguay goal and looked the more threatening team.

The Colombians thought they had earned a penalty in the 84th minute when another teasing Rodriguez cross into the box ended with defender Yerry Mina appearing to be hauled down by Gustavo Velazquez.

Argentinian referee Dario Herrera pointed to the spot but subsequently overturned the decision after a VAR review.

Colombia play Costa Rica in their second group game of the tournament on Friday, before wrapping up their first round campaign against Brazil on July 2.

Mattia Zaccagni kept Italy's European Championship title defence alive with an incredible late equaliser in the holder's thrilling 1-1 draw with Croatia, as Spain completed a perfect group stage and showed Albania the door.

Italy are in the last 16 of Euro 2024 after forward Zaccagni struck a superb equaliser with almost the last kick of the game in Leipzig, sparking an explosion of joy among the Italian fans and even a sprint up the line from 65-year-old coach Luciano Spalletti.&nbsp;

The Azzurri will play Switzerland in the next round thanks to Zaccagni, who came on with nine minutes remaining and curled in his leveller in the eighth minute of stoppage time following a brilliant burst and pass from defender Riccardo Calafiori.

"Nobody believed any more, but the players did," Spalletti told Sky Sport in Italy, before raging at critics in the Italian press pack.

In a furious press conference Spalletti said "I inject myself with this venom" which he said was coming "from all sides" and blasted unnamed people within Italy's camp for potentially leaking his team's formation to the media.

Spalletti's team finish Group B in second place on four points, five behind winners Spain who beat Albania 1-0 thanks to a neat Ferran Torres finish in the 13th minute in Dusseldorf.

Albania's Euros adventure is over following a defeat which also means that England, France and the Netherlands are guaranteed a place in the next round at least as one of the four best third-placed teams.

Croatia meanwhile are all-but out due to Zaccagni's late equaliser just as it looked as if Luka Modric was once again going to be the hero for his country.

Modric defied his advancing years by firing Croatia into the lead nine minutes after the break and becoming the oldest goalscorer in Euros history.

At 38 years and 289 days old, Modric broke the record set by Austrian Ivica Vastic in 2008, pouncing on a rebound after Gianluigi Donnarumma made an incredible save from Ante Budimir's point-blank range header.

Modric made up for Donnarumma pushing away his penalty just moments before, but his goal wasn't enough and on two points third-placed Croatia's hopes are hanging by a thread.

"It's hard when you lose like this to find the words to describe how you feel," said Modric.

<h2>Misfiring England 'favourites</h2>

England, on four points, can seal first place in Group C with a win over Slovenia on Tuesday, but Gareth Southgate's team come into the match in some turmoil after a laborious start to the tournament.

On Sunday, captain Harry Kane insisted Southgate was the right man to manage England after widespread criticism of his tactics and team selection following two sub-par displays against the Serbs and the Danes.

Southgate, who has led England to deep runs at the previous three major tournaments, has a squad packed to the gills with talent.&nbsp;

And although England have not lived up to their billing as pre-tournament favourites Kane said "his record speaks for itself".

Slovenia coach Matjaz Kek agreed with Kane, saying his team, who will qualify with a win over England, "are playing against one of the favourites, if not the favourites, for the tournament".

Should England top the group they could have the chance to exact some revenge on Italy for defeat in the Euro 2020 final in the quarters, while second spot would mean facing hosts Germany in the last 16.

France trail Group D leaders Netherlands on goal difference as the pair vie for top spot on Tuesday and Les Bleus' Kylian Mbappe continues his recovery from a broken nose suffered in his team's opening win over Austria.

Earlier on Monday, France coach Didier Deschamps said Mbappe was "eager to play" against eliminated Poland but gave no indication as to whether the superstar forward would start in Dortmund.

France lacked cutting edge without Mbappe in their goalless draw with the Netherlands and although the 25-year-old has never scored in the Euros&nbsp;fans are as eager for his return as he is to play.

Robert Lewandowski has warned Kylian Mbappe that the custom mask worn by the French striker will affect his vision and could also have a significant impact on his game.

Robert Lewandowski has warned Kylian Mbappe that the custom mask worn by the French striker will affect his vision and could also have a significant impact on his game. The Polish striker was also forced to wear the protective mask, way back in 2015, when he was still playing for Bayern Munich. Mbappe suffered a fractured nose during the league match against Austria last week. He was named on the bench in the match against the Netherlands but remained an unused substitute as France played a goalless draw. “When I had to wear a mask myself, it wasn't nice. It's quite annoying, especially in the penalty area, I had problems, I didn't react, I couldn't see, my field of vision was hampered," said Lewandowski. "It's a few milliseconds but it can slow down a player. It's a challenge, it's not pleasant, but of course a player's health is more important. For a competition, emotions are very high and everyone wants to play at all costs. I understand the difficulties he faces," he added. Also read | Euro 2024: UEFA's bizzare rule to restrict Kylian Mbappe from wearing France's tri-colour mask 'Feels like 3D glasses' Mbappe broke his nose after a hefty collision with Austria and Lens defender Kevin Danso, deep into the second half with the French side leading 1-0. After the accident, Mbappe was rushed to the hospital where results showed that his condition was not too serious but might require a significant recovery period. While earlier reports claimed that Mbappe might remain missing till the quarterfinal stage, manager Didier Deschamps naming him on the bench against the Dutch side came as a relief to the fans. “Breathing, no. But vision, yes. It limits vision a little. It's supposed to protect so in certain situations, it limits the angle of view. A greater risk of playing in the middle? No, the contacts are everywhere, in all the duels. It all depends on the position," said Deschamps on Mbappe facing difficulties in the mask. "You have to get used to it, it feels like you have 3D glasses. It's better every day. He was in our training sessions. The bruise has gone down a lot. He's getting used to the mask. He wants to play, he's raring to go. He wanted to play against the Netherlands and he wants to play [against Poland].” Mbappe first sported the mask with French flag colours during a training session. However, it was soon revealed that Mbappe would not be allowed to use the said mask in the match as UEFA rule stipulates that "medical equipment worn on the field must be of a single colour and must not allow the team or manufacturer to be identified'. France square up against Poland at the Signal Iduna Park on Tuesday (Jun 25) and a win would help them top the group. (With inputs from agencies)

Gary Lineker has blamed&nbsp;journalists for his spat with England's Euros stars. Lineker, a&nbsp;former England international and current BBC pundit, had a go at the team for playing a 'sh*t' brand of football which invited reaction from captain Harry Kane, a day before the Three Lions face Slovenia in a do-or-die match.&nbsp;

Lineker in his&nbsp;The Rest Is Football podcast, alongside Alan Shearer, shifted the blame on media for firing the question towards Kane by using his name.&nbsp;

'Made the headlines again, haven't I!&nbsp;Journalists being what journalists are," said Lineker.&nbsp;

"They can be a bit tricky on these things trying to wind up our footballers. We've been obviously critical of England's performance as has pretty much every journalist," he added.&nbsp;

Addressing Shearer, Lineker said the journalist who asked the question was doing so to stir the pot.&nbsp;

"We've talked about this on this podcast before about journalists not being brave enough to ask their own questions," said Lineker.&nbsp;

"I guarantee whoever asked that would have probably been critical himself. I think they do it A) to stir the pot and B) because they're too scared to ask the questions themselves."

<h2>What did Kane comment?&nbsp;</h2>

Addressing the media on Sunday (Jun 23), Kane reminded the likes of Lineker that even they hadn't won anything for England during their playing days.&nbsp;

"I'd never want to be disrespectful to any player, especially, you know, a player who's worn the shirt and knows what it's like to play for England. I always feel like [former players and pundits] have a responsibility. I know they've got to be honest and give their opinion, but also they have a responsibility of being an ex-England player," said Kane.

"The bottom line is, we haven't won anything as a nation for a long, long time. And, you know, a lot of these ex-players were part of that as well... they do know that it's tough to play in these major tournaments. It's tough to play for England," he added.&nbsp;

After England played a miserable 1-1 draw against Denmark, Lineker criticised the team for sitting deep and inviting pressure from the opponents.&nbsp;

"I mean, you can think of all sorts of words and expletives if you like, but it was sh*t," said Lineker, who also criticised manager Gareth Southgate.&nbsp;

England are sitting at the top of Group C with four points in two matches. However, a place in the next round is far from being secured as a defeat against Slovenia could complicate matters. Southgate would need to get his midfield balance sorted if England are to challenge a dogged Slovenian team.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Lionel Messi has opened up on the playing style of Pep Guardiola amid criticism from a section of the fans that the former Barcelona manager had killed the instinctive nature of footballers. Guardiola managed Messi for four seasons between 2008 and 2012 where the star attacker achieved new heights in his professional career. The Guardiola-Messi combination weaved magic for the La Liga giants as the club won 14 titles during that time which includes three La Ligas and two Champions League titles. Messi is currently in the US for the title defence of Copa America as Argentina started off the campaign with a convincing win against Canada. Ahead of the second match against, Messi, in an extraordinary interview, shed light on Guardiola's philosophy. "The Guardiola era has caused a bit of confusion. Everyone wants to play like that now," Messi explained. "They tell six/seven-year-olds to play with two touches, quickly. At that age, what happened with me needs to happen for these kids... we shouldn’t take away their spontaneity," he added. The statement from Messi is rare and it is widely believed that Guardiola played a major role in shaping the career of the Argentine. However, the style, often takes out the fluidity and creativity of the players who are forced to operate in a certain way. The top teams of the past relied on 'off-the-cuff' movements and creativity of the players but there is a growing notion that Guardiola often stifles such ingenuity. This is not to say that Guardiola's tactics have not evolved over time. At Manchester City, the possession-based game is married to counter-pressing which the Spaniard may have learnt from his rival and former Liverpool manager, Jurgen Klopp. The style may have its critics but it has helped Guardiola become one of the best managers on the planet. He managed to win four consecutive Premier League titles with Man City last month, on the back of a historical treble campaign in the 22-23 season. (With inputs from agencies)
