Manchester United are all set for the upcoming 2024-25 season as the club returns to pre-season with new plans. While the focus will be on the pitch, the club hierarchy has reportedly dropped big news for those associated off-field as they plan to lay off 25 per cent of their staff. This will be a huge blow to administrative staff who were earlier informed to work from an office after&nbsp;work from home culture was abolished.

<h2>Manchester United to trim wage structure</h2>

According to a report from ESPN FC, Manchester United will save money by trimming 25 per cent of their staff which will be used to improve pitch performance. The message was passed to the team on Wednesday (July 3) where the club is trying to raise funds and reduce the off-field costs. The move, instigated by new INEOS chairman and co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, could see as many as 250 United's 1,100 staff depart.

A source has told ESPN that Ratcliffe hopes to make savings running into the millions, with the bulk used to improve the first-team squad and their facilities.

A number of other cost-cutting measures have already been implemented including cancelling the traditional travel and hospitality for staff to attend the FA Cup final.

<h2>United’s PSR issues</h2>

The club at the time of writing is on the right scale of the Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) brought into effect by the Premier League to limit the clubs from spending while in losses. United, however, could face a similar charge if they don’t reduce losses in the coming seasons. They recently paid Newcastle United a hefty fee to sign Sporting Director San Ashworth which again sees them on the spending side.

The Red Devils are expected to be busy in the transfer window with new additions expected in the coming months. This includes a left-back while they are also prioritising a defensive midfielder with Casemiro set to depart. However, before any of those signings are made, United will have to generate profit from sales.

Colombia came from behind to grab a 1-1 draw with Brazil on Tuesday, ensuring their qualification to the Copa America quarter-finals as group winners.

An equalizer from Daniel Munoz in first half stoppage time was enough to earn Colombia a share of the spoils after Raphinha had fired Brazil into the lead with a sublime 12th-minute free-kick at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California.

The result means Colombia advance to the knockout rounds as winners of Group D, where they will face Group C runners-up Panama in Glendale, Arizona, on Saturday.

But Tuesday's draw means Brazil will face a titanic showdown in Las Vegas on Saturday against arch-rivals Uruguay, winners of Group D with a perfect record.

Brazil goalscorer Raphinha insisted the five-time world champions would be unfazed at the prospect of playing Uruguay. &nbsp;

"Our team is evolving with each game, with each training session and we think we're on the right track," Raphinha said.

"Unfortunately it wasn't the result we wanted, and it wasn't the position that we wanted to qualify for the quarter-finals in.

"But whoever wants to be champion shouldn't be worrying about who they play in the next round; we have to be prepared for anyone.

"If we want to win this competition we have to be prepared to play our best."

<h2>Vinicius Jr out</h2>

Brazil will head into the quarter-finals without Real Madrid star Vinicius Jr, who picked up his second yellow card of the tournament for a reckless early foul on James Rodriguez on Tuesday.

Colombia playmaker Rodriguez had alarm bells ringing amongst Brazil fans from the ensuing free-kick, just clipping the top of the bar with goalkeeper Alisson beaten.

But although Colombia made the smoother start it was Brazil who took the lead after 12 minutes, with Raphinha curling a sensational free-kick into the top corner to make it 1-0.

Colombia however continued to threaten, Rodriguez volleying over the bar on the turn after 16 minutes.&nbsp;

Rodriguez thought he had set up Colombia's equalizer three minutes later, supplying a pinpoint cross from a free-kick on the right for Davinson Sanchez to home.

The goal was ruled out for offside after a VAR review.

Tempers threatened to boil over midway through the first half, and Venezuelan referee Jesus Valenzuela issued three yellow cards in quick succession to Colombia's Deiver Machado and Jefferson Lerma along with Brazil's Joao Gomes.

Colombia looked the more assured side throughout the first half and in stoppage time their slick play got its reward, with Crystal Palace wing back Munoz blasting home after being released by a superb pass from veteran forward Jhon Cordoba.

Colombia -- who have now gone 26 international games unbeaten since a defeat to Argentina in early 2022 -- looked comfortable through the second half and should have wrapped up victory in the final minutes only for substitute Rafael Borre to shoot over from eight yards with the goal gaping.

Copa America 2024: Brazil held by Colombia, to face Uruguay in quarter-final

Turkey will face the Netherlands in the quarter-finals&nbsp;of Euro 2024 after winning a thriller with Austria 2-1 as both countries reached the last eight of a European Championship for the first time since 2008.

Merih Demiral was the unlikely hero for Turkey, in soaking Leipzig, after bundling his team ahead with less than a minute on the clock and then thumping in the decisive header just before the hour mark.

Vincenzo Montella's side, who were missing suspended captain Hakan Calhanoglu but once again backed by massive support at the Zentralstadion, will take on the Dutch in Berlin on Saturday after their comfortable 3-0 win over Romania earlier on Tuesday.

Turkey were beaten 6-1 by Austria in March and Montella admitted he was hoping to get his own back for that embarrassing defeat.

"I denied it yesterday but today I can admit that Austria was the team I wanted so that I could get rid of that stain that as a coach I had on me," said Montella.

Turkey will again be able to count on their raucous fans in the German capital as they aim to replicate their run to the last four from 16 years ago.&nbsp;

That tournament was co-hosted by Austria, who played a full part in an engrossing match and on another day may have run out winners.

Ralf Rangnick's side were on top for most of the match and in particular in the second half, when they pinned Turkey back and conceded the second goal completely against the run of play.

Al-Ahli centre-back Demiral became the first European defender to score twice in the knockout stages of a major tournament since Lilian Thuram for France at the 1998 World Cup.

Michael Gregoritsch halved the deficit by forcing home Stefan Posch's flick on at another corner shortly after Demiral took his international goal tally to four in 48 caps.

But Austria couldn't capitalise on their dominance and went out after Christoph Baumgartner was denied a leveller in the final seconds of added time by an incredible Mert Gunok save.

"I believe if the game had gone into extra-time we would have won the game because the Turkish team were exhausted and we had a physical advantage," Rangnick told reporters.

Euro 2024: Turkey set up quarter-final clash with Netherlands after thrilling win over Austria

Brazil's Vinicius Jr. won't be playing in team's 2024 Copa America quarterfinal against Uruguay after picking up his second yellow card in the group stage matches.

The Real Madrid forward got his second yellow card in Group D's last match against Columbia on Tuesday (Jul 2). The game ended in 1-1 draw as Brazil finished second behind Columbia in the group standings.

Vinicius got the card for appearing to hit Columbia striker James Rodriguez in the first half.

Brazil manager Dorival Junior wasn't much pleased with the referee's decision and said: ''It's a situation that happened in the game. In the first move, which was accidental for me, he ended up getting the first card. Everything that happened was very strange."

"Recently I heard that Brazil had to learn to play without their big players. I think it's time ... Vini happens to be out, and unfortunately we lost Neymar [to injury before the tournament]. We have to learn that at times, others will have to appear. We'll have a difficult game against Uruguay."

Brazil full-back and Vini Jr's teammate Danilo, however, is confident of other players rising up to the occasion in Real Madrid star's absence.

"Vini is a top player who can win games for us. But we have other players with a lot of quality and potential, and let's try to make up for Vini's absence," Danilo said.

Dorvial was also unhappy with referee's failure to give a penalty five minutes Columbia's equalizer and said: "At that moment, it would have been 2-0. With the speed we have, the team we have, a scoreline of 2-0 is very different to 1-0. For me, it was decisive."

Earlier, US men's national team also blasted officiating after their tournament-ending loss against Uruguay. USNMT were not happy with a goal allowed by opposition on off-side.

Copa America 2024: Brazil's Vinicius Jr. out of quarterfinal against Uruguay | Know Why

It was a night of redemption for Turkey at the Euro 2024 on Tuesday (July 2) after they beat Austria 2-1 in the Round of 16 contest in Leipzig. The win saw Turkey book a quarterfinal berth along with the Netherlands but had their goalkeeper Mert Gunok to thank after an excellent show in the goalpost. He produced a marvelous save to help Turkey preserve their lead and head into the last eight for the first time since 2008.

<h2>Gunok makes excellent save</h2>

Having taken a 2-0 lead, Austria reduced the deposit to 2-1 in the 66th minute and set up a mouth-watering final quarter of the match. Austria tried their best to score the equalsier and take the match into extra time but failed on all occasions. One such save came in the final minute of the match when Austria attacker Christoph Baumgartner lopped past four defenders and headed a ball in the direction of the goalkeeper and almost scored the equalising goal.

However, Turkish goalie Gunok stretched himself when the ball was curling away from him to make an excellent save. The save reminded me of Gordon Banks,&nbsp;had similarly saved a Pele-bound effort at the 1970 FIFA World Cup. Pele, who was at that time a two-time World Cup winner and about to win his third title headed a ball in the direction of Banks with the ball almost certain to reach the goal. However, like Gunok on Tuesday, Banks had an outstretching hand which saw the goal saved. The save is considered one of the iconic moments in football history and in the FIFA World Cup.

France had dominated the last-16 clash but their profligate finishing looked set to force extra time until they finally found a way through with five minutes left.

Substitute Randal Kolo Muani collected the ball inside the Belgian penalty area and hit a shot that was going wide until a deflection off the unfortunate Vertonghen took it past goalkeeper Koen Casteels.

The lucky break sent the 2022 World Cup runners-up into a last-eight tie in Hamburg on Friday as they remain on course to become European champions for the third time.

France are yet to score from open play in four matches at the tournament -- captain Kylian Mbappe netted once from a penalty against Poland, while their other two goals came from opposition defenders.

Crucially, however, they are rock solid in defence, having conceded only one goal, from a penalty, so far.

Their back line was outstanding against Romelu Lukaku and his fellow attackers, and Belgium bow out after what will go down as a disappointing tournament for them.

Both the&nbsp;sides were looking for revenge, in Belgium's case for their 1-0 defeat against France in the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup, a result that still hurts six years on.

France, meanwhile, had a point to prove at the Euros after going out in the last 16 three years ago on penalties to Switzerland, a deeply disappointing result in between runs to consecutive World Cup finals.

The French were widely seen as the favourites to win this tournament before arriving in Germany, but they were below par during the group phase.

The broken nose suffered by Mbappe in their opening game against Austria did not help, and the uncertain form of Antoine Griezmann has been a problem too.

Griezmann was dropped for the last group match against Poland but returned here in one of two changes, with Marcus Thuram also coming in as wingers Ousmane Dembele and Bradley Barcola made way.

Meanwhile Belgium coach Domenico Tedesco's reaction to his own side's unconvincing displays in the group stage was striking.

Yannick Carrasco and Lois Openda were given starts to provide as much attacking threat as possible in support of Lukaku, while skipper Kevin De Bruyne played a more withdrawn role.

The hope, for the neutrals at least, was that so much attacking talent would lead to an open game full of goals, but the reality was rather different.

Belgium were happy to sit back and thwart France, and did not test opposition goalkeeper Mike Maignan at all in the first half.

France had lots of the ball, yet often looked untidy, imprecise and rather flat, with Griezmann appearing lost on the right wing.

But they had chances in the first half, with Thuram heading just wide from Jules Kounde's inviting cross just after the half-hour mark and Aurelien Tchouameni twice firing off-target.

Real Madrid midfielder Tchouameni then tested Casteels with a deflected long-range strike as France upped their game at the beginning of the second half.

Mbappe accelerated inside and smashed a shot just over, and there was a sense a goal might be coming.

The breakthrough almost came for Belgium an hour in as William Saliba lost possession on halfway and De Bruyne released Carrasco, who was about to pull the trigger when Theo Hernandez arrived to make a brilliant saving block.

Maignan finally had to make a save 20 minutes from the end of normal time, to keep out a drive from Lukaku, and was called into action again to deny De Bruyne.

It was becoming clear that one goal would decide the contest, and France got it in the 85th minute as N'Golo Kante fed Kolo Muani, and his shot went in off Vertonghen to take Les Bleus through.

Romania were gritty but out-classed, lacking the quality to punish their opponents' profligacy before Malen added his second on the counter in stoppage-time.

The victory put the Oranje on course for a quarter-final clash with Turkey or Austria, who beat the Netherlands in 3-2 in the group stage.&nbsp;

Ronald Koeman's side will need to improve their effectiveness in front of goal should they wish to emulate&nbsp;their manager, who was a player for the Dutch when they won the 1988 Euros on German soil.

Prior to the game, Netherlands' captain Virgil van Dijk said his side lacked energy and the "will to win" in the loss to Austria.

But the Dutch were still strangely flat in the early stages despite Van Dijk's rallying cry.

Group E winners Romania, whose 3-0 victory over Ukraine in their opening game, was just their second ever win in the Euros, pinned the Dutch back early.&nbsp;

Romania went close when Dennis Man latched onto a superb diagonal ball from Nicolae Stanciu, but the Parma winger blasted over.

The Dutch broke Romania's momentum shortly after when Gakpo got on the end of a sweeping move to open the scoring on 20 minutes.

Jerdy Schouten sliced a perfect, long pass through the midfield to Xavi Simons, who found Gakpo on the left flank.&nbsp;

Gakpo eluded Andrei Ratiu and seemed to catch goalkeeper Florin Nita off-guard, blasting in at the near post.&nbsp;

The goal ignited a period of Dutch dominance, Stefan de Vrij heading inches wide five minutes later.&nbsp;

The Netherlands wasted a perfect chance to double their lead with half-time approaching when Denzel Dumfries picked Bogdan Racovitan's pocket and found Simons, who got tangled up and failed to get a decent shot away.

Koeman's team squandered an array of opportunities early in the second-half.

Memphis Depay and van Dijk went agonisingly close before Gakpo's second was ruled out by VAR for offside.

With every missed chance, the nerves in the Dutch camp seemed to grow, but Romania lacked the quality to truly punish them.&nbsp;

United States men's national team bowed out of the ongoing Copa America 2024 after 0-1 loss against Uruguay on Monday (Jul 1). The US players, however, blasted match official Kevin Ortega for some very dubious calls made during the game.

The frustration in US players, particularly captain Christian Pulisic, who was almost taunting Ortega to join Uruguay celebrations after the match.

Among the various decisions gone haywire during the match, one was the reason USMNT lost the game. It was in the 73rd minute of the game where two Uruguay players were offside after checking with the VAR but the goal was still allowed.

Copa America 2024: USMNT players blast official after tournament ending loss against Uruguay

The United States crashed out of the Copa America on Monday after a 1-0 defeat to Uruguay, as Panama sealed their place in the quarter-finals with a 3-1 win over Bolivia.

Team USA, who suffered an upset 2-1 defeat to Panama last Thursday, went into Monday's final Group C game at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City needing to match or better Panama's result against Bolivia to advance.

But US coach Gregg Berhalter's side never looked like doing enough to seriously threaten a well-drilled Uruguay outfit who advance to the last eight as group winners.

"It's difficult to say right now, obviously the emotions are running high," disappointed US captain Christian Pulisic said.

"We had a good start and brought a lot of energy, but just didn't have enough quality. We just couldn't find a solution."

Hopes of a great escape for the tournament hosts faded inside the first 30 minutes, as news filtered through that Panama had taken a 1-0 lead against Bolivia in Orlando.

Those hopes were revived early in the second half after Bolivia equalised to make it 1-1, leaving the US on course for qualification provided they continued to hold Uruguay.

Yet the US optimism was punctured just moments later when Uruguay took the lead in controversial circumstances through Mathias Olivera on 66 minutes.

Ronald Araujo's powerful header from Nicolas de la Cruz's free-kick was parried away by US goalkeeper Matt Turner, but only into the path of Olivera, who tucked away the rebound.

Replays appeared to show that Olivera was offside when Araujo first made contact with the ball, but despite a lengthy VAR review, Peruvian referee Kevin Ortega ruled that the goal should stand.&nbsp;

The mathematics of qualification looked even more bleak for the US after news that Panama had scored again through Eduardo Guerrero to regain the lead at 2-1, and the final nail in the coffin came when Cesar Yanis added a third for Panama in stoppage time.

The USA's first-round exit raises fresh questions about the future of US coach Berhalter, who remains deeply unpopular amongst swathes of American fans.

Berhalter was only reappointed to the US job in June last year following a hiatus after leading the team to the 2022 World Cup.

Yet the nature of Monday's early exit is certain to reignite debate about whether he is the best man to lead the United States into the 2026 World Cup on home soil.

Failure to defeat Uruguay, 14th in the latest FIFA rankings, extends Berhalter's poor record against top 20 teams.&nbsp;

Berhalter has just five wins in 20 matches against top-20 teams during his reign, and four of those victories came against regional rivals Mexico -- who were also been eliminated from the Copa in the first round.

That dismal sequence continued after a toothless attacking performance from Berhalter's side against Uruguay, where they registered only three shots on goal in a misfiring offensive display.

US defender Antonee Robinson described the officiating as "amateur hour" but stressed responsibility for the defeat lay with the American players. "Just not enough quality in the final third," Robinson said.

"At the end of the day we weren't good enough to get the result today. This is on us."

<h2>Ronaldo in tears</h2>

After seeing the match move into extra time as both Portugal and Slovenia could not score in normal time, Ronaldo was presented with an opportunity to win the match. In the 103rd minute, Vanja Drkusic's challenge on Diego Jota saw Portugal awarded a penalty which was taken by Ronaldo. However, presented the opportunity, the 39-year-old missed his penalty with Slovenia captain and goalkeeper Jan Oblak guessing the right way.

After the penalty incident, soon the half-time whistle arrived in extra time and Ronaldo was seen in tears. He was agitated by the penalty miss with teammates surrounding him and consoling. Manchester United defender, who did not play in the match and was an unused substitute came to Ronaldo and consoled him with a kiss on the head.

<h2>Ronaldo has redemption</h2>

While Ronaldo’s penalty miss in extra time saw him miss out on scoring in six consecutive Euro’s he did get his redemption soon. With the match heading into a penalty shootout, Ronaldo took the opportunity to score Portugal’s second penalty. This time he got the better of Oblak and converted to give Portugal a 2-0 lead in the shootout. They would eventually win the shootout 3-0 with Diogo Costa saving all three of Slovenia’s penalties.

However, despite the shootout goal, Ronaldo is not technically registered to have scored a goal at the Euro 2024 as shootout goals are not counted. Therefore, the Portugal captain will have to wait for Saturday’s clash against France where he could become the first player to score at six Euros. The penalty miss also sees him stranded at 14 goals in the competition’s history.

"But I'm not emotional about that. I'm moved by everything that football entails, by the enthusiasm I have for the game, the enthusiasm I see in the fans, having my family here, people's passion... it's not about leaving the world of football. What else is there for me to do or win?," he added.

"It's 20 years representing and playing with the national team, bringing joy to people, to the family, my children, that is what motivates me most."

Portugal reached the quarterfinals of Euro 2024 after beating Slovenia in penalty shootout on Monday (Jul 1). They will be facing 2022 FIFA World Cup finalists France next for a place in semis.

"As you saw, I missed the penalty but I wanted to be the first to score [on the penalty shootout] because you have to take responsibility when the team has to," said the five-time Ballon d'Or winner after the game.

Portugal eventually managed to win the match 3-0 in the penalty shootout.

Euro 2024: Portugal striker Cristiano Ronaldo confirms it's 'his last' tournament

Belgium footballer Kevin De Bruyne has said that he'll take a decision on his international career after the summer. The comments came after the Red Devils' 0-1 loss against France in Round of 16 match in ongoing Euro 2024.

"It's too early to answer," the 33-year-old reporters after the loss on Monday (Jul 1) when asked if the loss marks the end of his Belgium career.

"Let me process this loss. It's a been a very long season. I need to rest my body. I will make my decision after the summer," he added.

De Bruyne called the loss against France 'a pity.' Belgium conceded an own goal by Jan Vertonghen in the 85th minute of the game which handed them the defeat.

"We had a plan and we executed that plan pretty well. We knew that with France's qualities they would have more of the ball, but I think we defended well as a team and didn't concede many chances apart from a few long shots."

"We had our moments, although there weren't very many. But we could be dangerous. Our plan was good until their goal came, with the deflection, there is not a lot we can say about that. It's unfortunate, so we have to accept it," the footballer added.

De Bruyne made his debut for Belgium in 2010 and has played in over 100 international matches. The ace footballer has featured in three FIFA World Cups as well (2014, 2018 and 2022) and remains in plans of coach Domenico Tedesco for the 2026 edition.

Tedesco also spoke in the press conference after De Bruyne's comments on future and said: "He knows how important he is. He doesn't need my opinion about it because he knows. Immediately after the game, it's difficult to ask these kind of questions to Kevin."

Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba has made it clear that he is not finished as a professional footballer and brushed aside any suggestion he could retire despite a four-year doping ban. Notably, Pogba has not played since August 2023 and the 31-year-old is awaiting a date for his hearing in front of the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) where he hopes to see his doping suspension reduced by two years. The veteran was banned&nbsp;earlier this year after testing positive for doping twice (the A sample and then the B sample).

Talking to Sky Italia in&nbsp;Düsseldorf on Monday, ahead of his hearing, Pogba said,&nbsp;"If you haven't seen an interview of mine in which I say that I'm retiring, it means that it's not like that, because I still feel like a footballer." The midfielder spoke at the sidelines of&nbsp;France's 1-0 win against Belgium in the ongoing Euro 2024 round of 16 clash, in Germany.

<h2>'Pogba isn't finished, Pogba is here and until you see me say that I'm finished, don't worry'</h2>

Pogba further opined, "I want to fight this, for me, injustice. An interview has come out, I don't know if you've seen it all, they put something that ... I hadn't finished talking. Pogba isn't finished, Pogba is here and until you see me say that I'm finished, don't worry. I have an incredible desire to come back, I feel like a child who wants to be professional. I train, I do everything I can to get back on the pitch."

Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba determined to play on, fight 4-year doping ban

Portugal goalkeeper Diogo Costa saved three Slovenia penalties to earn his side a 3-0 shoot-out victory after Cristiano Ronaldo redeemed himself from the spot in a dramatic Euro 2024 last 16 clash on Monday.

Portugal forward Ronaldo broke down in tears after missing a penalty in the first period of extra-time in the goalless tie in Frankfurt.

But he recovered to convert in the shoot-out as Portugal scraped through to set up a blockbuster clash with France in the quarter-finals.

Slovenia battled valiantly to keep Portugal at bay, with Jan Oblak making a stunning save to keep out Ronaldo's penalty after Diogo Jota was fouled.

However, Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes and Bernardo Silva all scored in the shoot-out and Slovenia's trio missed, sending the Selecao through in heart-stopping fashion.

Portugal coach Roberto Martinez reverted to a more familiar 4-3-3 system after his side were embarrassed by debutants Georgia in their last group game when he deployed three at the back.

The Euro 2016 winners dominated the ball and created their first chance after 12 minutes when Silva's inviting cross just evaded Ronaldo and Fernandes could not turn home at the far post.

Slovenia, playing in their first ever knock-out match at a major competition, maintained their defensive shape well and limited Portugal's opportunities.

Former Real Madrid striker Ronaldo directed a soft header at his old nemesis, Atletico Madrid keeper Oblak, under vital pressure from Vanja Drkusic.

The Slovenian defender was booked moments later for bringing down the surging Rafael Leao as he charged towards Oblak's goal.

Ronaldo smashed the free-kick narrowly over the bar with the goalkeeper at full stretch.

Slovenia produced their first effort on target just before half-time when RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko fired at Costa from the edge of the box.

Portugal's holding midfielder Joao Palhinha hit the outside of the post with a low drive, the final kick of the first half, after more good work by the menacing Leao.

Ronaldo forced a solid stop by Oblak with another venomous free-kick early in the second half as the Al-Nassr forward tried in vain to break down Slovenia's defensive wall, which comfortably held England to a goalless draw in the group stage.

Matjaz Kek's side had a golden chance to take the lead on a rare burst forward, but Sesko dragged wide after beating the oldest player in the competition's history, 41-year-old Pepe, for pace.

Still determined to score, Portugal captain Ronaldo thumped yet another free-kick over the crossbar with 20 minutes remaining.

The striker had a chance to settle the game in open play with two minutes to go but, in down the left, could only shoot straight at Oblak, leading to extra-time.

<h2>Oblak thwarts Ronaldo</h2>

The pace dipped in extra-time and the first period was uneventful, until the 103rd minute when Jota barged into the area and went down over Drkusic's leg for a penalty.

Ronaldo fired it hard to Oblak's left but the goalkeeper produced a stunning save to deny him, tipping his effort against the post and out.

In half-time of extra-time, Ronaldo was in tears after his miss, and Portugal fans sang his name to try to raise his shattered morale.

Slovenia missed another huge opening of their own when Pepe gave the ball away with a loose pass and Sesko stole it to race through on goal.

The forward fired too close to Costa who produced an excellent save with his leg, forcing a penalty shoot-out -- Slovenia's first ever.

Slovenia went first and substitute Josip Ilicic's effort was brilliantly saved by Costa.

Ronaldo buried his kick and asked for forgiveness from the fans behind the goal for his extra-time miss, before Costa saved Slovenia's second from Jure Balkovec.

Costa made a third consecutive penalty save from Benjamin Verbic after Fernandes converted and Silva won it as he sent Oblak the wrong way.

England escaped an embarrassing last 16 exit at Euro 2024 thanks to Jude Bellingham's overhead kick before Harry Kane struck in extra-time for a 2-1 win over Slovakia on Sunday.

The Three Lions have been hyped as one of the favourites to end a 58-year wait for major tournament glory but looked set to go out with a whimper to Ivan Schranz's 25th minute goal.

However, Bellingham's moment of inspiration five minutes into six added on in stoppage time breathed new life into Gareth Southgate's reign as England boss.

Kane then headed in just a minute into extra-time to set up a quarter-final meeting with Switzerland on Saturday.

Southgate looked certain to fall on his sword after steadfastly refusing to make changes to a side that stumbled through as winners of Group C despite scoring just two goals in three games.

Kobbie Mainoo was introduced for his first competitive start in Southgate's only change and he paid the price with another lacklustre display lacking in any speed or invention for long spells.

The one saving grace of England's performances in the group stage was that a makeshift defence had held up well, conceding just once in three games.

However, they were torn to pieces early on by a Slovakia side ranked 45th in the world.

England did not heed a couple of warnings as David Hancko and Lukas Haraslin were wasteful with big chances.

Slovakia finally punished their more illustrious opponents when David Strelec was given acres of room to turn and play in Schranz, who confidently stroked past Jordan Pickford for his third goal of the tournament.

Despite his lack of experience, Mainoo was one of the few players that threatened to spark England into life as the Manchester United midfielder's effort was deflected wide.

The half-time whistle was met with a chorus of boos but Southgate still stuck to his guns and did not make a change until 25 minutes to go.

England did at least improve on a dismal first half and had the ball in the net within five minutes of the restart.

Phil Foden turned in Kieran Trippier's cross but was caught offside after a VAR review.

<h2>- Kane gets winner -</h2>

Slovakia should have doubled their lead shortly afterwards when England gave away possession and Strelec saw Pickford well off his line but failed to hit the target from the halfway line.

Southgate's hand was finally forced on 66 minutes by an injury to Trippier.

One of the major calls the England boss will come to regret is only naming one natural left-back in his 26-man squad in Luke Shaw, who has not played a minute for club or country since February.

With Shaw not match-fit, Bukayo Saka was forced to deputise at left-back to make room for the introduction of Cole Palmer.

England's chances seemed to have gone when Kane headed wide a golden opportunity and Declan Rice smashed the post with a long-range pot shot.

Southgate was even derided by the England support for bringing on Ivan Toney deep into stoppage time with chants of "you don't know what you're doing."

However, there was an incredible twist as Bellingham acrobatically turned home Guehi's flick-on from a throw-in the final moments of added-on time.

Slovakia were suddenly rattled and Toney was to have a telling contribution.

The Brentford striker headed Eberechi Eze's mishit shot back across goal for Kane to power home his second goal of the tournament.

Slovakia should still have taken the game to penalties when full-back Peter Pekarik failed to turn in a dangerous driven cross from point-blank range.

But England live to fight another day come the quarter-final against an impressive Switzerland, who comfortably knocked out holders Italy 2-0 on Saturday.

Euro 2024: Jude Bellingham, Harry Kane conjure late magic to keep England alive with tense R16 win vs Slovakia

England footballer Jude Bellingham is facing a probe by UEFA for allegedly 'breaching the basic rules of decent conduct' during the Round of 16 match against Slovakia in the ongoing Euro 2024 on Sunday (June 30).

Bellingham allegedly motioned to grab his crotch in front of Slovakia's bench during the extra time.

It is to be noted that it was Bellingham's stunning bicycle kick goal in&nbsp;the second last minute of the stoppage time was the reason&nbsp;game went into&nbsp;extra time.

The footballer is, however, unlikely to get banned but a fine could be the punishment mitigated to him, reported sports news website ESPN citing a source.

Reacting to the incident, the 21-year-old English footballer had said that it was an 'inside joke to friends' in a post on social media. However, UEFA has decided to go ahead with the investigation.

"A UEFA Ethics and Disciplinary Inspector will conduct a disciplinary investigation regarding a potential violation of the basic rules of decent conduct by the English Football Association player, Jude Bellingham, having allegedly occurred in the scope of this match," read a statement by UEFA which was released on Monday (Jul 1).

"Information on this matter will be made available in due course," it further added.

In a similar incident during&nbsp;the 2019 Champions League, Portugal superstar Cristiano Ronaldo and Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone were also found guilty of the same. Both of them&nbsp;skipped bans but were fined approximately $21,000.

As for the match, England were almost done and dusted before Bellingham's goal. England skipper Harry Kane then scored the go-ahead goal in the first minute of the extra time and England went on to win the game 2-1.

England, who were the finalists in the last edition of the tournament, will now face Switzerland in the quarterfinals on Saturday (Jul 6).&nbsp;

In a similar incident during the 2019 Champions League, Portugal superstar Cristiano Ronaldo and Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone were also found guilty of the same. Both of them skipped bans but were fined approximately $21,000. As for the match, England were almost done and dusted before Bellingham's goal. England skipper Harry Kane then scored the go-ahead goal in the first minute of the extra time and England went on to win the game 2-1. England, who were the finalists in the last edition of the tournament, will now face Switzerland in the quarterfinals on Saturday (Jul 6).

Euro 2024: England star Jude Bellingham under investigation by UEFA | Read Why

Switzerland dumped reigning champions Italy out of Euro 2024 with a stunning 2-0 victory on Saturday to reach the quarter-finals for the second time in their history.

Murat Yakin's supremely well-drilled side outplayed the flat two-time winners in the last 16 clash in Berlin and will face England or Slovakia in the next round.

Ruben Vargas teed up Remo Freuler for Switzerland's 37th minute opener before curling home superbly himself right at the start of the second half to deservedly double their lead.

A new-look Italy, short on star power and without many of the key figures that led them to Euro 2020 glory, offered little in response to Switzerland's energetic display.

"It hurts, it really hurts," said Italy's captain and goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.

"We can only say sorry to everyone, we were disappointing today and they deserved to win. We struggled all game long."

Former Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka, arriving at the Euros after a stunning season with German champions Bayer Leverkusen, pulled the strings as the Swiss rarely looked like letting the lead slip away.

"I'm at a loss for words, it was the most important game of my career," said Swiss midfielder Fabian Rieder.

"Everyone played for each other, we worked well in defence and attack... we have an incredibly great team.&nbsp;

"We want to enjoy the moment now but keep working hard for the next game."

Italy coach Luciano Spalletti dropped Jorginho after his worrying group stage performances, bringing in Nicolo Fagioli in defensive midfield among a hefty six changes which failed to bring the Azzurri to life.

Spalletti said the second goal had knocked the stuffing out of his side and their limitations had been exposed.

"Right now, for too many reasons, we are unable to do anything more than this," he said. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Spalletti had called on his team to improve in the knock-out rounds after they scraped into the Last 16 with a last gasp equaliser in the 1-1 draw with Croatia.

However it was Switzerland who grew in confidence and pulled off their best display yet at the Olympiastadion in a sweltering Berlin, where a far more impressive Italy won the 2006 World Cup.

Former goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon, now Italy's delegation head, has been regaling the squad with stories from that triumph but it did not inspire a convincing performance -- apart from by his modern day counterpart, Donnarumma.

The Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper, key in Italy's Euro 2020 conquest, made a fine save to thwart Breel Embolo midway through the first half as Switzerland created the first real chance by playing him through.

<h2>Freuler opener</h2>

Donnarumma could not stop Freuler from firing Switzerland ahead after 37 minutes when the midfielder controlled Vargas' low cross and drilled home at the near post.

Switzerland kept the ball for well over a minute in the build-up, stringing together 33 passes before Freuler, who plays for Serie A side Bologna, applied the finishing touch.

Donnarumma produced a fine save to tip Rieder's free-kick on to the post before the break as the Swiss sought to equal their best ever performance at the last Euros by reaching the last eight.

Hosts Germany needed a late leveller to avoid defeat against the Swiss in the group phase, while in the previous edition they knocked out much fancied France in the last 16, so Italy cannot say they were not warned.

Spalletti hooked Stephan&nbsp;El Shaarawy at half-time for Zaccagni, but Italy gave the ball away from the kick-off and Switzerland doubled their lead just 27 seconds into the second period.

Augsburg midfielder Vargas, who started in place of the suspended Silvan Widmer but on the left of the attack, broke into the area and arced a superb curling shot over Donnarumma.

The closest Italy came to scoring was when Swiss defender Fabian Schar misjudged a header and hit the frame of his own goal.

The near-invisible Gianluca Scamacca also hit the post from close range, but appeared to be offside.

The sides drew twice in World Cup 2022 qualification with the Azzurri failing to make the tournament but went one better in Germany, securing their first win against Italy since 1993, after 11 without victory.

Uruguay thrashed tournament minnows Bolivia 5-0 in their Group C encounter in New Jersey on Thursday to all but book their place in the&nbsp;Copa&nbsp;America&nbsp;quarter-finals. Facundo Pellistri nodded home the opener in the eighth minute and Darwin Nunez doubled Uruguay's lead just after the 20-minute mark, powering a left-footed shot past Bolivia keeper Guillermo Vizcarra to score in his seventh consecutive international match.

Maximiliano Araujo struck from close range to kill off the contest in the 77th minute before Federico Valverde made it 4-0 four minutes later. Substitute Rodrigo Bentancur completed the rout by heading home the fifth in the 89th minute with his first touch.

Uruguay will progress as group winners if they avoid defeat by the United States in their final group game on Monday, while even defeat in that match would likely see them go through thanks to their superior goal difference.

Bolivia, who have lost both games so far, have only a slim mathematical chance of avoiding a group-stage exit for the fourth time in a row.

On a night when Nunez scored his 13th international goal, Uruguay's all-time leading scorer Luis Suarez was brought on as a late substitute and was immediately handed the captain's armband.

Nunez had already missed one quality chance before Pellistri found the net in the eighth minute from a well-worked set piece. Nunez doubled Uruguay's advantage when he finished instinctively over the charging Viscarra's right shoulder and inside the near post.

Uruguay eased off at the start of the second half, much to manager Marcelo Bielsa's disgust, but it proved to be the calm before the storm. Maximiliano Araujo added a third after getting on the end of Nicolas de la Cruz's through ball before Uruguay scored twice more in the closing stages.

<h2>PANAMA SHOCK USA</h2>

Panama pulled off a shock 2-1 victory over the United States in a heated Group C encounter at the&nbsp;Copa&nbsp;America&nbsp;on Thursday after the hosts were reduced to 10 men following Tim Weah's red card in the 18th minute.

Jose Fajardo netted the winner in the 83rd minute for Panama, who had Adalberto Carrasquilla dismissed five minutes later for a crunching challenge on Christian Pulisic. The U.S. are second in the group, level with Panama on three points but with a better goal difference. The hosts must at least match Panama's result in the final group game to advance to the knockout rounds.

The U.S. play Uruguay while Panama face Bolivia on Monday. "Emotional rollercoaster, but that's soccer at the end of the day," U.S. midfielder Tyler Adams said. "We know what we signed up for and playing in&nbsp;Copa&nbsp;America&nbsp;we knew it was going to be a fight. Credit to Panama. They did their job. They got the result."

Panama coach Thomas Christiansen said his team had executed the game plan perfectly. "I'm very happy, in particular for the team, tactically and psychologically," he added. "I try to make the best decisions by being calm, level-minded. And of course, everyone that went in contributed what we expected from them, and now we have a victory such as this one."

It was a costly night all round for the hosts, with goalkeeper Matt Turner being substituted at halftime with a leg injury after a collision with Panama defender Cesar Blackman in the 12th minute. Weah was sent off after a video review showed he had shoved Roderick Miller in the back of the head off the ball amid a tense and fiery start to the match.

After Weah's dismissal, Folarin Balogun delighted the crowd with a splendid strike from 17 yards to give the hosts the lead in the 22nd minute. However, the joy was shortlived as Blackman equalised from the edge of the box four minutes later.

"There were things before the red card that went against us," Balogun said. "Of course, we probably could have had a few decisions, but that's the nature of the game."

Ethan Horvath replaced the injured Turner in the U.S. goal at the break and nearly faced a penalty in the 64th minute but the decision against U.S. defender Cameron Carter-Vickers was overturned by video review.

The best opportunity for the U.S. in the second half came in the 81st minute when a header by Ricardo Pepi was saved by Panama goalkeeper Orlando Mosquera.

Panama then seized the initiative, scoring the winning goal when substitute Fajardo smashed home Abdiel Ayarza's cross.

"Moving forward, we need to control our emotions in certain situations," Adams said. "I think the team fought for everything after we got the red card. You definitely can't fault the effort. "By winning the first game, we put still ourselves in a position that we can have everything to play for in the last game."

Weah had apologised to the team after the match, he added. "Just respect to the rest of the team because they fought for every single ball, every single duel, every single minute, and we still created chances after going down 10 men, so it shows our quality."

Spain defender Nacho Fernandez is hoping his move to Saudi Arabia from Real Madrid is no distraction from his country's Euro 2024 challenge.

Saudi club Al Qadsiah announced Nacho's arrival on a two-year deal as a free agent on Thursday after leaving Champions League winners Madrid at the end of his contract.

"This is not my goodbye from Real Madrid, it's to clear up what's happened and explain my decision," Nacho told a news conference Thursday at Spain's Euros base camp in south-west Germany.

"I would have liked (my move) to be sorted out before, thankfully we won the three games and the team is focussed.

"These things don't affect me in the games, I knew it for months and it's made me enjoy things more... all we want is to focus on Georgia."

Venezuela booked their place in the quarter-finals of the&nbsp;Copa&nbsp;America on Wednesday with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Mexico that ensured Jamaica's elimination from the tournament. Mexico-based veteran striker Salomon Rondon stroked in the only goal from the penalty spot to seal all three points for Venezuela, who are top of Group B with six points from two games.

Mexico, meanwhile, can still qualify for the knockout rounds with a victory over Ecuador in their final group game on Sunday. But the Mexicans will be left kicking themselves at their failure to take at least a point from Wednesday's clash with Venezuela at a packed SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles.

Mexico's Orbelin Pineda missed an 87th-minute spot kick that would have made it 1-1, his effort parried away by Venezuela goalkeeper Rafael Romo. Earlier, Rondon had fired Venezuela into the lead in the 57th minute from the penalty spot after Mexico's Julian Quinones brought down Venezuela's Jon Aramburu with a clumsy challenge in the area.

Venezuela's win confirmed Jamaica's exit from the tournament following their 3-1 loss to Ecuador in Las Vegas earlier on Wednesday.

Ecuador, beaten by Venezuela in their opening match on Saturday, held off a spirited second-half rally by the Reggae Boyz to claim a vital three points at the Allegiant Stadium.

The South Americans looked to be cruising to victory after taking a 2-0 lead following a Kasey Palmer own goal and a penalty from Chelsea-bound teenager Kendry Paez.

However, Jamaica pulled a goal back from veteran striker Michail Antonio early in the second half, and then had strong claims for a penalty rejected 15 minutes before full-time.

Ecuador, however, made the game safe in stoppage time with a breakaway goal from Alan Minda as Jamaica pressed forward for an equaliser.&nbsp;

Ecuador opened the scoring with a freakish own goal in the 13th minute, Pierre Hincapie's cross from the left taking a wicked deflection off Palmer and looping into the Jamaica net. Ecuador doubled their lead from the penalty spot on the stroke of half-time.

Defender Greg Leigh instinctively blocked a header with his upper arm and after a lengthy VAR review, Chilean referee Cristian Garay pointed to the spot.

A rejuvenated Jamaica pulled one back early in the second half with Antonio jabbing home a low shot on 54 minutes after Ecuador failed to clear a corner.

Jamaica thought they had been thrown a lifeline with 15 minutes to go after a VAR penalty check triggered when Ecuador's Alan Franco appeared to handle inside the area. But despite being called to the monitor to take a look at the incident, referee Garay decided there had been no handball and waved play on, before Minda's late goal sealed Ecuador's win.

Turkey reached the knockout phase at a major tournament for the first time in 16 years after a bad-tempered 2-1 win over a battling 10-man Czech Republic at&nbsp;Euro&nbsp;2024 on Wednesday. Vincenzo Montella's Turkey finished second in Group F behind Portugal to progress, as the Czechs were eliminated despite a brave performance on a sweltering night in Hamburg.

"Tonight we just want to celebrate, we deserve it," said Italian Montella. "But starting tomorrow we want to continue to make history."

Georgia also went through as one of the best third-placed teams after a stunning 2-0 win over Portugal in the group's other final game, eliminating Hungary.

Turkey will face Austria in the last 16 in Leipzig on Tuesday, their first major tournament knockout match since the&nbsp;Euro&nbsp;2008 semi-finals, when they were beaten by Germany.

The Czechs were reduced to 10 men in the 20th minute when Antonin Barak was given the earliest red card in&nbsp;Euros&nbsp;history, beating the unwanted record set by France's Eric Abidal in 2008. Barak's pair of bookings were two of 18 yellow cards shown in total, with Tomas Chory also shown red after the final whistle in ugly scenes.

Hakan Calhanoglu powered Turkey into a 51st-minute lead, but Tomas Soucek lashed in an equaliser midway through the second half.

A frantic finale to the game ensued as the Czech Republic pushed for the winner that would take them through, but Cenk Tosun ended their hopes on the counter-attack in added time.

There were ugly scenes at the final whistle as fans ran onto the pitch, with Czech forward Chory brandished a red card in the aftermath. "We are upset, everyone wanted to advance, we had the right mindset," said Soucek.

"It was terribly hard with 10 men, we didn't want to concede, then we did, we levelled and pushed them until the last minute but then we conceded another."

The Czechs started strongly despite the tens of thousands of Turkey fans jeering their every touch, with Lukas Provod forcing Mert Gunok into an early save with a deflected shot. They were especially dangerous from Vladimir Coufal's long throw-ins, one of which Robin Hranac headed over when unmarked.

But Turkey were given a huge boost as midfielder Barak caught Salih Ozcan by the halfway line and was shown a soft second yellow card. Key Czech striker Patrik Schick could only feature among the substitutes after picking up an injury in the draw with Georgia last week.

He was given a yellow card for protesting from the bench after Provod was felled by a flying challenge.

<h2>- Tempers fray -</h2>

Turkey winger Kenan Yildiz was fortunate to stay on the pitch, only receiving a yellow for a nasty tackle on Hranac before elbowing Coufal in the face without punishment as tempers threatened to boil over.

Montella's side were struggling to break down their opponents despite the man advantage and almost fell behind when David Jurasek was denied by Gunok after a quick counter-attack.

Knowing defeat could send them home with Georgia leading Portugal, Turkey started brightly after the break and released the pressure on themselves with a crucial opening goal.

Yildiz had an effort brilliantly saved by Jindrich Stanek, but the Czech keeper suffered an arm injury in making the stop, and with him struggling to get back into position, Calhanoglu drilled the ball into the bottom corner.

Stanek was immediately replaced by back-up Matej Kovar as part of a triple change. The Czechs became increasingly stretched as they went in search of the two goals they needed to stay in the tournament, and Turkey's teenage star Arda Guler failed to convert from barely three yards out.

But Soucek gave the Czechs hope when he fired home after Gunok spilt the ball following another Coufal hurl into the box. The goal survived a long VAR review for a possible foul on the embarrassed keeper and a handball, before being eventually awarded to set up a thrilling finish.

Ivan Hasek's Czech Republic threw as many players forward as possible but could not find a moment of magic.Instead, Turkey hit them on the break and substitute Tosun struck a fine finish into the far corner, before the match ended in fiery fashion.

<h2>GEORGIA MAKE HISTORY, STUN PORTUGAL TO PROCEED AHEAD</h2>

Georgia are through to the last 16 of&nbsp;Euro&nbsp;2024 after Wednesday's 2-0 win over Portugal, a historic triumph in the former Soviet Republic's first appearance at a major international tournament. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia's fine finish with less than two minutes on the clock in Gelsenkirchen and Georges Mikautadze's 57th-minute penalty ensured Georgia would claim the greatest football victory in the Black Sea nation's history.

Georgia's players celebrated with their delirious fans long after the final whistle, after inflicting a first defeat since the 2022 World Cup on Portugal, and being rewarded for the sheer fun they have brought to the tournament.&nbsp;

Willy Sagnol's team qualify from Group F as one of the four best third-placed finishers and face a daunting clash with Spain, who won all their group games, on Sunday.

"We just made history, nobody would have believed that we would have made it happen by beating Portugal, but this is why we are&nbsp;a strong team," Kvaratskhelia told reporters. "If there is even one percent chance you can make it happen if you believe."

Portugal had already qualified for the next round as group winners and coach Roberto Martinez made eight changes from the team which swept Turkey aside to guarantee first place last weekend.

However, his team were on top for most of the match and looked likely to equalise before Antonio Silva, who gave the ball away for the first goal, was harshly penalised for light contact with Luka Lochoshvili to give away the decisive penalty.

"We were low intensity, we conceded early which is what Georgia needed and after that we weren't clear headed in our passing or finishing," Martinez told reporters.&nbsp; "We tried to score but couldn't, that gave Georgia heart and in the end it was a deserved win."

Regardless Portugal will face Slovenia on Monday and, saving any injuries, Martinez will have a mostly rested first XI to call upon.

Turkey reached the knockout phase at a major tournament for the first time in 16 years after a bad-tempered 2-1 win over a battling 10-man Czech Republic at Euro 2024 on Wednesday. Vincenzo Montella's Turkey finished second in Group F behind Portugal to progress, as the Czechs were eliminated despite a brave performance on a sweltering night in Hamburg. "Tonight we just want to celebrate, we deserve it," said Italian Montella. "But starting tomorrow we want to continue to make history." Georgia also went through as one of the best third-placed teams after a stunning 2-0 win over Portugal in the group's other final game, eliminating Hungary. Turkey will face Austria in the last 16 in Leipzig on Tuesday, their first major tournament knockout match since the Euro 2008 semi-finals, when they were beaten by Germany. The Czechs were reduced to 10 men in the 20th minute when Antonin Barak was given the earliest red card in Euros history, beating the unwanted record set by France's Eric Abidal in 2008. <h2>Tedesco furious with cameraman</h2>

Post match, Belgium players were not very happy as they squeezed their way into the last 16 after a disappointing group stage campaign where they picked up only four points. Players formed a hurdle after the match where Tedesco took charge while captain Kevin de Bruyne, Romelu Lukaku and Jan Vertonghen were&nbsp;seen having a mini-conference. During that time Tedesco asked the cameraman to leave where it is thought that he was slamming his players and team spirit in the team camp.

There is a reported rift in the Belgium camp as body language of players have often been questioned. Rifts between De Bruyne and Vertonghen are well known while Eden Hazard, the former skipper was also having his issues in the team during his playing days.

Their win against Slovakia proved to be the difference-maker while a point against Ukraine proved crucial. Belgium will next take on France in the R16 match where they will be the second favourites.

There is lots of security, so it shouldn't happen. Maybe there is a message to that fans, that this is not the right way [to behave].
