Lionel Messi grabbed the equaliser as a misfiring Inter Miami were held to a 1-1 draw at home against Charlotte FC in Major League Soccer on Saturday.

Despite the setback of a third straight draw, Miami -- already assured of a place in the playoffs -- remain top of the Eastern Conference and the Supporters Shield regular season standings.

Charlotte, coached by former Aston Villa boss Dean Smith, took the lead in the 57th minute when a low shot from Brandt Bronico deflected off Karol Swiderski and beat Miami keeper Drake Callender.

The goal added some needed urgency to Miami's approach and Jordi Alba found his former Barcelona team-mate Messi with a cross from the left, but the Argentine's header was straight at goalkeeper Kristijan Kahlina.

The Croatian keeper then did well to keep out a Messi drive from the edge of the box as Inter pushed for a leveller.

Moments later that goal came when Messi, just outside the area, carved out just enough space for a shot and buried his left-foot drive into the bottom corner for his 15th goal in as many games this season.

Miami thought the game had turned decisively in their direction in the 77th minute when Diego Gomez went down under challenge from Charlotte's French defender Adilson Malanda, and referee Ramy Touchan pointed to the spot.

Malanda had already been booked, and so the second yellow card saw him dismissed, but he -- and his team -- were saved by a VAR review, which correctly ruled that he had played the ball.

There were chances at both ends as Miami threw themselves forward looking for the winner and Charlotte threatened on the counter-attack.

But deep in stoppage time, Miami had a great chance to take all three points when Messi floated a cross to Alba, who headed across the goal, but from a yard out, Luis Suarez -- under pressure from Kahlina -- put his shot over the bar.

Miami has 65 points with three games remaining in the regular season. Champions the Columbus Crew has 57 and Cincinnati has 56.&nbsp;

Miami can clinch the Supporters' Shield with a victory or a draw away to Columbus on Wednesday.&nbsp;

Major League Soccer: Inter Miami held to draw again despite Lionel Messi goal

Manchester City failed to shrug off the absence of Rodri in a 1-1 draw at Newcastle as they dropped Premier League points for the second consecutive game on Saturday.

The Spaniard has been ruled out for the rest of the season due to a serious knee injury picked up in last weekend's fiery 2-2 draw with title rivals Arsenal.

Josko Gvardiol put the visitors in front at St James' Park, but Newcastle were well worthy of the point given to them by Anthony Gordon's second-half penalty.

A point edges City two points clear at the top of the table, but they could be overtaken by Liverpool, Aston Villa and Arsenal by the end of the weekend.

Guardiola described Rodri, who is unbeaten in his past 52 Premier League appearances stretching back to February 2023, as&nbsp;"irreplaceable" but vowed to find a collective solution.

Teenager Rico Lewis was thrust forward into a central midfield role alongside Mateo Kovacic.

But City lacked the control and poise so often provided by Rodri on and off the ball.

Newcastle have lost only one of their opening six Premier League games of the season but until now results have been better than the performances from Eddie Howe's men this season.

The Magpies were also missing key personnel with last season's top goalscorer Alexander Isak out injured.

Neither side had seriously threatened until Gvardiol collected Jack Grealish's pass inside the box and produced a finish Erling Haaland would be proud of by curling a low shot into the far corner.

City should have quickly doubled their lead when Nick Pope's clearance fell to Ilkay Gundogan, who mishit his attempted lob of the England goalkeeper rather than picking out Haaland.

Newcastle had to wait till first-half stoppage time to test Ederson.

Joelinton brilliantly took down a Kieran Trippier free-kick and fired goalwards only to be denied by his Brazil team-mate.

However, Newcastle were rewarded for a bright start to the second half.

Gordon got in behind and was brought down by Ederson as he tried to round the goalkeeper.

The England international picked himself up to confidently slot home the penalty.

Roared on by vociferous home crowd, Newcastle had the champions clinging on.

Referee Jarred Gillett turned down appeals for a second penalty when Kyle Walker challenged Joelinton before Ederson flew off his line to deny Gordon.

Guardiola responded with the introduction of last season's Premier League player of the year in Phil Foden and City turned the momentum around to finish strongly.

Premier League: Man City feel Rodri absence as Newcastle hold champions for a draw

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou has revealed Son Heung-min is fighting to prove his fitness for Sunday's clash with Manchester United.

Son limped off with a hamstring injury in the 71st minute of Thursday's 3-0 win against Qarabag in the Europa League.

Postecoglou was uncertain about the extent of his captain's injury immediately after the Qarabag tie.

But he said on Friday that the South Korea forward wants to train on Saturday to show he is ready to feature in the Premier League showdown at Old Trafford.

"Fair to say the boys are fairly tired, the ones who put in a shift. Apart from Sonny, everybody is okay," Postecoglou told reporters.

"Sonny, I don't think is too bad. He wants to train tomorrow and we will see how it goes and make a decision from there. We have another day up our sleeve to give him every chance."

If Son is unable to recover in time, Postecoglou has several options on the left wing, including Sweden international Dejan Kulusevski.

Germany's Timo Werner replaced Son on Thursday, while 17-year-old attacker Mikey Moore could be handed a full debut.

"Timo and Mikey can certainly come into the frame. We have Kulusevski who can play wide as well so we've got some options there, but firstly we'll see how Sonny is," Postecoglou said.

Son's long-term future in north London was thrown into the spotlight earlier this week after he said no talks over a new contract had taken place with the Tottenham hierarchy.

Son's current deal expires next year but Tottenham hold the option to extend his contract by a further year and reportedly plan to activate that clause.

Postecoglou made it clear he wants the 32-year-old to stay, with Son into his 10th season at the club he joined from Bayer Leverkusen in 2015.

"I don't always have the final say but certainly I like to think my input is significant on it," he said.

"I think it is part of a broader discussion around Sonny but the way he is performing and leading the club at the moment, I certainly want him to stick around for a while."

Premier League: Spurs skipper Son in race to recover from injury for Man Utd clash

Julian Alvarez struck a 90th-minute winner for Atletico Madrid to snatch them a 1-0 victory at Celta Vigo on Thursday in La Liga. Even a single point would have flattered Diego Simeone's side but they took all three when the Argentina international, on as a substitute, finished Antoine Griezmann's cross at the back post.

Celta had the better chances as Atletico, third, lacked spark ahead of the derby clash against Spanish champions Real Madrid on Sunday. "We didn't play well in attack in the first half," Simeone told DAZN. "The subs gave us a bit more creativity to be able to win the game."

Simeone started his son Giuliano for the first time after some substitute appearances in recent weeks and left star summer signing Alvarez on the bench.

Atletico failed to take a single shot in a low quality first half, while Celta threatened seriously only just before the interval, when Jan Oblak saved brilliantly from Iago Aspas' drive.

The Slovenian goalkeeper made another superb stop from Borja Iglesias' close-range header after 57 minutes to keep Atletico level. However it was Atletico who claimed victory when former Manchester City striker Alvarez, on as a substitute, stayed sharp to prod home Griezmann's deep cross.

"(Scoring) helps for confidence, and it's always to help the team... these are three important points," said Alvarez. "We knew that it would be a difficult game, Celta have done very well at home. "Bit by bit we improved in the game, and in the second half we made some chances."

Earlier Ayoze Perez netted twice to claim Villarreal a 2-1 win at Espanyol, taking the Yellow Submarine fourth. With six goals the Spain international trails only Barcelona's Robert Lewandowski in the scoring charts by one strike.

Home fans were angry with referee Alejandro Quintero Gonzalez's lenient officiating and one threw a plastic cup which struck the official as he walked off at full-time.

Real Betis could only secure a 1-1 draw at bottom of the table Las Palmas. Barcelona lead the league after their 1-0 win over Getafe on Wednesday with Real Madrid second, beating Alaves 3-2 on Tuesday.

La Liga: Julian Alvarez's late strike ensures Atletico Madrid fortunate victory at Celta

Tottenham started their Europa League campaign with a 3-0 win against Qarabag despite playing more than 80 minutes with 10 men, but Son Heung-min gave the north Londoners an injury scare on Thursday. Radu Dragusin's early dismissal was no obstacle for Ange Postecoglou's side, who cruised to victory at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium thanks to goals from Brennan Johnson, Pape Sarr and Dominic Solanke.

However, the sight of South Korea forward Son being forced off in the 70th minute will be concerning for Postecoglou, who cannot afford to be without his talismanic captain for a long period. "He said he was a bit tired but I haven't spoken to him or the medical staff yet," Postecoglou said.

With a healthy Son, the Europa League could offer a path to silverware for Postecoglou, who boasts that he always enjoys success in his second season as he seeks to end a Tottenham trophy drought dating back to 2008.

Sterner tests await Tottenham but they delivered a confident opener, once the game -- delayed for 37 minutes after Qarabag were caught in heavy traffic -- finally got underway.

"I wasn't happy as I felt we started really sloppy. It was almost like the delay got to us," Postecoglou said. "The reaction after the red card was good. We kept pressing high."

Tottenham weren't fazed by being reduced to 10 men after just eight minutes when Romania defender Dragusin was sent off for pulling down Juninho as he raced through on goal.

They took the lead in the 12th minute through Johnson's third goal in his last three games.&nbsp; Qarabag conceded possession cheaply deep inside their own half and Solanke teed up Johnson for a composed finish from 10 yards. Sarr volleyed Tottenham's second from six yards after Qarabag keeper Mateusz Kochalski made a hash of catching a 52nd-minute corner.

Yves Bissouma's foul on Elvin Cafarguliyev gave Qarabag a penalty four minutes later, but Toral Bayramov blazed the spot-kick over.

Solanke wrapped up the win in the 68th minute, slotting home to claim his second goal since his club record move from Bournemouth in the close season.

Fuming about his team's transport issues, Qarabag manager Gurban Gurbanov said: "Imagine being caught in traffic for more than two and a half hours. There was no police to escort us. "As soon as we arrived, we were told to start in 40 minutes. These things shouldn't happen."

<h2>- Roma denied -</h2>

Troubled Roma were held to a 1-1 draw by Athletic Bilbao after conceding a late equaliser at the Stadio Olimpico. Roma fans were furious with the club's recent decision to sack boss Daniele De Rossi, an iconic figure during his time as a Giallorossi player, just four games into the season.

Given the unenviable task of replacing De Rossi, Ivan Juric inspired a 3-0 win against Udinese last weekend, but he was denied a second successive victory. Artem Dovbyk put Roma in front after 32 minutes as the Ukrainian made it three goals in his last three games for his new club with a thumping header from Angelino's cross.

But Aitor Paredes headed Bilbao's equaliser after Unai Nunez nodded across goal in the 85th minute. Jose Mourinho's Fenerbahce beat Union Saint-Gilloise 2-1 as the Portuguese boss started his bid to win the tournament for the third time in his career.

Mourinho, who won the competition with Manchester United and Porto, watched as Caglar Soyuncu put Fenerbahce ahead in the 26th minute before Christian Burgess's 82nd-minute own goal doubled the lead.

Ross Sykes' stoppage-time reply for Union came after Franjo Ivanovic missed a penalty for the visitors, who had Kevin Mac Allister sent off.

Ajax thrashed Besiktas 4-0 thanks to Mika Godts' brace and goals from Kian Fitz-Jim and Kenneth Taylor. Olympiakos, UEFA Conference League winners last season, were beaten 2-0 at Lyon, while Rangers won 2-0 at Malmo.

Ten-man Tottenham Hotspur cruise in Europa League opener despite Son Heung-min's injury scare

Alisson Becker is ready to return from injury for Liverpool's trip to Premier League strugglers Wolves, manager Arne Slot said on Friday.

The first-choice goalkeeper has missed the past two games, with Caoimhin Kelleher deputising, but Slot said the Brazilian was in line to play on Saturday.

"He trained yesterday a part of our session with the group, so we're expecting him to do the whole session today," Slot said at his pre-match press conference.

"So we think he is available but of course we have to train today.

"And of course we're really happy with Alisson being back but I want to emphasise the fact that Caoimhin did really well in the two games he was in goal for us, so another example of me having two, and I think even three, good options in certain positions."

Liverpool are second in the Premier League, just one point behind champions Manchester City, with four wins from their first five matches.

Slot, in the early days of his reign after replacing Jurgen Klopp, said it had been a "good start, but not a perfect one".

Premier League: Alisson ready to return for Liverpool, says coach Arne Slot

Preston striker Milutin Osmajic has been charged with violent conduct after allegedly biting an opponent during last week's goalless draw with Blackburn in the English Championship.

The Montenegro international is alleged to have bitten Rovers defender Owen Beck, who was sent off for kicking out at Duane Holmes in the same incident late in the second-tier game at Deepdale on Sunday.

"Milutin Osmajic has been charged following Preston North End's EFL Championship game against Blackburn Rovers on Sunday, 22 September," said a Football Association statement.

"It's alleged that the forward committed an act of violent conduct by biting an opponent around the 87th minute."

Osmajic, 25, has until Monday to provide a response.

Blackburn boss John Eustace said in his post-match press conference: "(Beck's) got a big bite mark on the back of his neck. He's shown all the lads. He's a little bit quiet, a little bit shook up."

Former Uruguay forward Luis Suarez, now of Inter Miami, served a number of bans during his career for biting incidents, including a 10-game ban when playing for Liverpool.

<h3>West Ham boss rules himself out after calf injury</h3>

West Ham manager Julen Lopetegui jokingly ruled himself out of his side's next game after ending up on crutches following their heavy League Cup loss away to Liverpool.

Football injuries are usually confined to the players, but so incensed was Loptegui by the London club's performance during Wednesday's thumping 5-1 defeat, he hurt his calf as he jumped in frustration.

The Spaniard hobbled around West Ham's training ground on Thursday and could still be using crutches for the Premier League match at London rivals Brentford on Saturday.

"I can't play in this match, for sure," Lopetegui joked. "I have a little injury in my calf. But it's not important. I don't play so it's not important."

The former Spain and Real Madrid boss, who replaced David Moyes at West Ham, is under increasing pressure just months into his new job after a poor start to the season.

The club are 14th in the Premier League table after just one win in their first five matches.

"We know we have to improve," said Lopetegui, who will be without Edson Alvarez against Brentford following the midfielder's red card on Wednesday.

"We are just starting. The demand is high. The Premier League is going to be long for all of us and these players are going to improve. I am sure of this.

"It's true we need one win and we want to win the next match. The next challenge is Brentford. A very good team, a very complete team. Very strong away and especially at home."

English Championship: Preston forward Milutin Osmajic charged for violent conduct

Robert Lewandowski continued his fine form and earned La Liga leaders Barcelona a 1-0 win over Getafe on Wednesday. The Polish forward struck from close range in the first half to maintain Barca's 100 percent record in the league so far this season with their seventh victory. Barcelona dominated despite not being able to add to their lead and restored a four-point advantage on Real Madrid, who beat Alaves on Tuesday.

"You can't always win by a lot of goals," defender Jules Kounde told Movistar. "I think the important thing is we made a lot of chances again and took the three points... Getafe is always a tough team to handle."

Coach Hansi Flick started Inaki Pena in goal for the stricken Marc-Andre ter Stegen, out for months with a severe knee injury, and brought Marc Casado and Alejandro Balde back into the side.

The reserve goalkeeper, who conceded 32 times in 17 matches across all competitions last season, heard his name chanted supportively by fans behind his goal and saved an early header from Carles Perez.

By contrast his opposite number David Soria's weak touch on Kounde's cross led to Barcelona's opener on 19 minutes, the ball falling perfectly for Lewandowski to finish from close range.

The 36-year-old striker has seven goals in La Liga this season and leads the scoring charts, seemingly rejuvenated under Flick after struggling at times last season. "For me he's the best number nine of the last 10 years," Flick, who also coached him at Bayern Munich, told reporters. "His job is in front of the goal, in the box, and he's doing that great."

Teen starlet Lamine Yamal might have doubled the lead moments later when Raphinha played him in, but he nudged inches past the post.

Soria made a good save from Raphinha, who collected the August player of the month award before kick-off, and soon sent another effort skidding wide.

Yamal almost bent home a delicious curling strike from distance before the hour, but Soria tipped it over the crossbar.

The Getafe goalkeeper also palmed a dangerous Raphinha free-kick around the post as Barcelona pushed for a second to put the match to bed.

Spain's Euro 2024 hero Yamal clipped the top of the crossbar with a vicious effort from distance, as Barca started to grumble about Getafe's persistently heavy challenges. Raphinha missed a golden chance in the final stages, heading wide after a clever dart into the box but Barcelona were not punished for their profligacy.

<h2>- Late scare -</h2>

Getafe, 19th, are still winless and wasted a fine chance of their own at the death when Borja Mayoral failed to get a shot away when well placed and free inside the box.

"We didn't put away our chances... we have to be more decisive in the area," said Getafe midfielder Luis Milla. The Madrid club have found the net on just three occasions so far this season. "It's clear we have to improve there, I'm sure the team will end up scoring," added Milla.

The leaders next travel to face Osasuna on Saturday, before second-placed Real Madrid face rivals Atletico Madrid in a derby clash on Sunday.

Even with various star names out injured, Flick's side have continued to improve since he arrived. "He's a coach who is very sure how he wants to play (and) we're understanding it well," added Kounde. "The team is enjoying training and we're comfortable in the games.

Robert Lewandowski's strike helps La Liga leaders Barcelona go past Getafe

Raheem&nbsp;Sterling&nbsp;scored his first Arsenal goal and Jack Porter became the club's youngest ever starter in a 5-1 rout of Bolton in the League Cup on Wednesday, while Liverpool reached the last 16 with a 5-1 win against troubled West Ham.

Sterling&nbsp;marked his maiden Arsenal start following his transfer deadline day move from Chelsea with a second-half strike in the third-round tie at the Emirates Stadium. The 29-year-old will hope his goal marks the start of a career revival after a disappointing two-year spell at Chelsea.

"He was great. He's started to show glimpses of what he can do. Physically, he needs to get to the level we require, but it was a massive step today," Gunners boss Mikel Arteta said.

Arteta had made seven changes from Sunday's stormy 2-2 draw at Premier League champions Manchester City, including giving goalkeeper Porter his record-breaking debut in place of the injured David Raya.

Aged 16 years and 72 days old, Porter was the youngest player ever to start for Arsenal, surpassing the previous record holder Cesc Fabregas, who was 16 years and 177 days when he played against Rotherham in 2003.

Porter was Arsenal's second youngest ever player overall after Ethan Nwaneri, who was 15 years and 181 days, when he made his debut in 2022. "Jack has been training with us since pre-season. He reacted really well and was really composed. What an experience," Arteta said.

Arsenal will travel to Championship side Preston in the last 16, with the tie of the fourth round pitting Tottenham against Manchester City. Liverpool's bid to retain the trophy will continue at Brighton, while Manchester United face Leicester.

AFC Wimbledon or Newcastle, whose tie was rearranged due to flooding at the League Two side's stadium, will host Chelsea. Declan Rice put Arsenal ahead after 16 minutes with a clinical finish from the edge of the area for his first goal this season.

Nwaneri, 17, doubled Arsenal's lead in the 37th minute with his first goal for the club and struck again from 12 yards four minutes after half-time. Porter had to pick the ball out of the net in the 53rd minute when Aaron Collins jinked around him and slotted home.

Sterling&nbsp;netted in the 64th minute, tapping in after Saka's cross was spilled by Bolton keeper Luke Southwood, and Kai Havertz grabbed the fifth from close range in the 78th minute.

<h2>- West Ham in turmoil -</h2>

At Anfield, Diogo Jota and Cody Gakpo scored twice as Liverpool's understudies demolished West Ham to increase the scrutiny on Julen Lopetegui. Under pressure after winning only one of his first five league games since replacing David Moyes, Lopetegui made eight changes from the 3-0 defeat against Chelsea last weekend.

That loss had made Lopetegui the first West Ham manager to suffer three consecutive defeats at home to start a season. The Hammers took a surprise lead in the 21st minute as Kostas Tsimikas's miscued clearance deflected in off Liverpool defender Jarell Quansah for a farcical own goal.

And Jota equalised four minutes later, the Portugal forward out-jumping West Ham keeper Lukasz Fabianski to nod in Federico Chiesa's volley.

Jota struck again in the 49th minute as he exchanged passes with Curtis Jones and drilled past Fabianski.

Mohamed Salah came off the bench to score in the 74th minute with a simple finish after Alexis Mac Allister's shot was pushed into his path.

West Ham were in disarray and Edson Alvarez was sent off in the 76th minute for a second booking after chopping down Salah.

Capping another torrid day for Lopetegui, Gakpo smashed home from 18 yards in the 90th minute and then guided a deflected effort beyond Fabianski moments later.

"We don't deserve this score because we did a lot of good things. They scored an offside goal. I'm sorry for our fans," Lopetegui said.

Liverpool boss Arne Slot added: "Since I've been here it's never been easy, although sometimes the result looks different."

EFL Cup: Raheem Sterling nets maiden Arsenal goal in big win over Bolton, Liverpool thrash West Ham

Manchester United stuttered to a 1-1 draw at home to FC Twente in their opening Europa League game on Wednesday as Christian Eriksen scored but then made an error that led to the equaliser. The Denmark international put United ahead with a powerful first-half strike on a soaking wet night at Old Trafford before Sam Lammers equalised for Twente on 68 minutes after Eriksen was caught in possession.

United manager Erik ten Hag selected a strong side to take on Twente, a club where the Dutchman came through the youth ranks and had three spells as a player before moving into coaching with the Eredivisie side.

Marcus Rashford returned to the line-up after coming off the bench in Saturday's 0-0 draw at Crystal Palace, with Harry Maguire replacing Matthijs de Ligt in defence and Manuel Ugarte taking the place of Kobbie Mainoo.

United had an early let-off when Lammers dragged narrowly wide after slack play by Diogo Dalot, before Twente goalkeeper Lars Unnerstall pulled off a brilliant save to stop Mees Hilgers from turning into his own net.

He was well beaten though by Eriksen's thunderbolt after the ball broke to the midfielder inside the Twente area. Andre Onana turned Sem Steijn's low free-kick around the post near the hour, but Twente drew level when former Rangers forward Lammers dispossessed Eriksen and ran through to fire home.

Unnerstall tipped Joshua Zirkzee's stinging effort over the crossbar and Bruno Fernandes went close, with Unnerstall producing a magnificent reflex save in stoppage time to keep out a Maguire header deflected by Gijs Besselink.&nbsp;

United ultimately had to settle for an underwhelming point to start the new-look, 36-team league phase that mirrors the format of the revamped Champions League.&nbsp;

Porto, the 2003 and 2011 winners of the second-tier European competition, lost 3-2 away to Norwegian champions Bodo/Glimt, who played most of the second half with 10 men. Ruben van Bommel, the son of former Netherlands international Mark, scored twice for AZ Alkmaar in a 3-2 victory over Swedish side Elfsborg, with ex-Tottenham forward Troy Parrott netting the winner from the spot.

Mauro Icardi's last-gasp goal sealed a 3-1 win for Galatasaray over PAOK in Istanbul, while Nice were left to rue a missed penalty in their 1-1 draw against Real Sociedad. Ander Barrenetxea gave La Real the lead before Pablo Rosario equalised on the stroke of half-time, but Evann Guessand saw his second-half spot-kick saved for the hosts.

Slavia Prague won 2-0 away to Bulgaria's Ludogorets, while Danish champions Midtjylland drew 1-1 with Hoffenheim and Anderlecht overcame Hungarian side Ferencvaros 2-1. Boulaye Dia scored twice in Lazio's 3-0 win over Dynamo Kyiv in Hamburg as both teams had a player sent off.

Unnerstall tipped Joshua Zirkzee's stinging effort over the crossbar and Bruno Fernandes went close, with Unnerstall producing a magnificent reflex save in stoppage time to keep out a Maguire header deflected by Gijs Besselink. Manchester United held at home by FC Twente in their Europa League opener

Son Heung-min said Tottenham team-mate Rodrigo Bentancur "almost cried" when he apologised over an alleged racist remark about the South Korean.

Bentancur was charged by the Football Association earlier this month with an alleged misconduct breach in relation to a media interview on Uruguayan TV.

The former Juventus midfielder had been asked in June by the host of the Canal 10 show for a Spurs player's shirt, to which he replied: "Sonny's? It could be Sonny's cousin too as they all look the same."

Bentancur apologised to Tottenham captain Son, who said his team-mate had "made a mistake".

But because the wording of the charge refers to an "aggravated breach", he could reportedly be banned for six to 12 domestic matches.

Son, speaking ahead of Thursday's Europa League home tie against Qarabag, said he could not say much at the moment because of the "FA process".

"But I love Rodrigo, I love him. We've a lot of good memories, we started playing together when he joined (in January 2022)," he said.

"He knew. He apologised straight afterwards when we had holiday. I was at home. I didn't even realise what was going on. He sent me a long message and you could feel it was coming from his heart.

"When we came back for pre-season, he felt really sorry and he almost cried when he apologised publicly and personally as well. He felt like he was really sorry. We are all human and all make mistakes and we learn from it."

Defeat in Madrid to Liverpool extended the club's trophy drought and it now stands at 16 years, but the South Korean forward is determined to end the wait for silverware this season.

"Yeah, it's a dream. There is no hiding this. That's what we work for," Son said.

"Obviously, we are looking for another big competition that everybody wants to win. It's going to be tough, a tough competition, a lot of games and a lot of travelling, which makes it even harder."

Real Madrid, second, cut the gap on Barcelona to one point before the leaders host Getafe on Wednesday.

Madrid dismantled Alaves with goals from Lucas Vazquez, Mbappe and Rodrygo before a late salvo from the visitors rocked Carlo Ancelotti's side.

Carlos Protesoni and Kike Garcia scored two goals in two minutes in the final stages but Madrid held on.

"This is football, you can think the game has finished, (then there's) a small slip and they score the first, they get confidence and you lose it, this is what happens," Ancelotti told reporters.

"Obviously we don't want this to happen, but it can.&nbsp;

"We have to highlight that for an hour the team played well and that gives us confidence."

Los Blancos overpowered Alaves from the start in what was a hugely uneven contest for most of the game, despite the Basque side's solid start to the season.

Ancelotti brought Vinicius Junior back into the starting line-up and gave Vazquez a rare start and the pair combined inside the first minute.

The Brazilian winger surged in from the left flank and cut the ball back for a simple finish from Vazquez.

Ancelotti said Monday he wanted more intensity at the outset of matches after Madrid had scored just one first half goal this season in La Liga or the Champions League, and his demand was swiftly met.

Los Blancos dominated with Alaves barely reaching Thibaut Courtois' penalty box.

Despite that Madrid's second goal only came five minutes before the interval, when Mbappe and Jude Bellingham combined beautifully.

<h2>Fifth league goal for Mbappe</h2>

France captain Mbappe conjured a clever flicked pass to the England international, who completed a one-two by sending his team-mate through on goal.

Mbappe took two deft touches to shake his marker and get a sight of goal, before stroking home clinically for his fifth league goal.

Rodrygo expanded Madrid's lead soon after the interval, roaming in with freedom from the right and firing through Alaves goalkeeper Antonio Sivera's legs.

Teenage Brazilian striker Endrick hit the post with a deflected effort and Abde Rebbach also struck the woodwork as Alaves made a rare foray forward.

Madrid substitute Endrick, 18, was fortunate not to be dismissed when he kicked out at Alaves defender Santiago Mourino.

Mbappe was taken off after 80 minutes and appeared to be suffering some discomfort, holding the back of his thigh.

"He's fine, he's fine, a little overloaded, he asked me for the change to avoid problems," explained Ancelotti.

The visitors pulled one back after 85 minutes when Protesoni curled home a sweet strike from the edge of the box.

Protesoni then turned provider with a fine ball over the top which Kike Garcia fired home well.

Madrid hung on for the victory, their 39th consecutive league game unbeaten in Ancelotti's 300th game at the helm across two spells at the club, ahead of Sunday's derby clash with Atletico Madrid at the Metropolitano.

The Rojiblancos' stadium was where they last tasted defeat in the top flight, exactly a year ago.

"I'm happy for the win," Vazquez told Real Madrid TV. "I think we had a great game until the 80th minute, when two mistakes cost us two goals against us, and we had to suffer more than we should have.

"With the game that we played, we didn't deserve that ending."

Tempers frayed at full time when Ancelotti confronted the referee, seemingly unhappy with a few of his players being booked while some of Alaves' tough tackling went unpunished.

"Fair or unfair, we have to adapt to the new rules," a calmer Ancelotti said later, as several of his players were carded for protesting decisions.

Alaves coach Luis Garcia Plaza was also angry at full-time after Endrick got away with lashing out.&nbsp;

"The Endrick incident should have been a red card, we should have played the last 10 minutes with an extra player," said the coach.

LaLiga: Kylian Mbappe scores again as Real Madrid survive late push from Alaves

Real Madrid have suffered a major blow ahead of their key La Liga derby clash against Atletico as star striker Kylian Mbappe has been ruled out due to a leg injury. Having scored the second goal in the 3-2 win over Deportivo Alaves, Mbappe had to leave the field with a leg injury. On Wednesday (Sep 25), the club released a statement on the injury, saying Mbappe will miss the next three weeks, which also likely rules him out of the international duty for France.

Former Real Madrid, Man Utd defender Raphael Varane announces shock retirement from professional football

West Ham manager Julen Lopetegui insists he can learn from his mistakes as he prepares the Hammers for their League Cup third-round tie away to holders Liverpool, following a chastening defeat by Chelsea in the Premier League.

Lopetegui's men lost 3-0 to their London rivals on Saturday, with the 58-year-old Spaniard under fire for his tactics and team selection.

The former Spain and Real Madrid boss replaced Guido Rodriguez before half-time and later admitted he had erred in starting with the Argentina midfielder.

"We learn a lot from our mistakes," Lopetegui told a pre-match press conference on Tuesday.&nbsp;

"But let me just say one thing. When you win you make mistakes too. When you lose you make mistakes. This is football.

"One thing that I say, that I make one mistake -- and I have talked about this. Mistakes are a part of football.

"The more important thing is that we are able to do better. We have (made) a big commitment with the players, knowing that the most important thing is at the end of the season."

West Ham, beaten in the League Cup quarter-finals by Liverpool last season, have lost all three home league games this season under Lopetegui, who replaced David Moyes in May.

The 2027 men's Champions League final will not be played in Milan amid uncertainties over the future of the San Siro stadium, European football's governing body UEFA said on Tuesday.

"As the Municipality of Milano could not guarantee that the San Siro stadium and its surroundings would not be affected by refurbishment works in the period of the 2027 UEFA Champions League final, it was decided not to assign the final to Milan," UEFA said in a statement.

UEFA added it was reopening "the bidding process to appoint a suitable venue, with a decision expected in May/June 2025".

Milan will not host 2027 men's Champions League final, bidding process reopened, says UEFA

Manchester United and Tottenham kick off their Europa League campaigns this week, hoping to put disappointing starts to the Premier League season behind them.

Erik ten Hag's United have failed to show any real improvement from a miserable season last term, sitting outside the top 10 already domestically with just seven points from five matches.

The Dutch manager narrowly clung on to his job despite leading the Old Trafford giants to their worst-ever Premier League finish of eighth last term, largely thanks to a surprise FA Cup final victory over Manchester City.

United spent heavily in the transfer market, but the expected upturn in fortunes on the pitch are yet to materialise ahead of their Europa League opener at home to Twente on Wednesday.

A goalless draw at Crystal Palace last weekend snuffed out some of the positivity garnered from the 3-0 win over Southampton and League Cup thrashing of Barnsley, but Ten Hag insists his team are progressing.

"The performance is good, but we are not happy with the score. We are disappointed with the score, it's clear," he said after the stalemate at Selhurst Park.

"But I know one thing for sure in football, it's a long way to go and when you play in the quality we now deliver the points will come, the goals will come.

"Now we can work on the team, we can build structures, we can also bring out some consistency in selection, and that helps, of course, to bring the patterns and routines in, and then you play better."

Man United are back in the revamped Europa League after a disastrous Champions League performance last season that saw the three-time European champions finish bottom of their group.

Anything other than a victory against Dutch club Twente, back in the competition proper for the first time since 2012, in the first of their eight league-phase matches would pile the pressure on Ten Hag and his players.

<h2>Spurs seek solace</h2>

Discontent has also started to grow among Tottenham fans for the first time since their blistering start to life under Ange Postecoglou 12 months ago.

A 3-1 victory over Brentford at the weekend at least helped them bounce back from successive Premier League defeats at the hands of Newcastle and local rivals Arsenal.

But Spurs will be desperate to end their 17-year wait for a major trophy and will see the new Europa League, which will not feature any teams dropping down from the Champions League like in previous seasons, as a golden opportunity.

They host Azeri club Qarabag on Thursday.

"I keep saying to people, 'Show me a success story and I'll show you a struggle'. People forget the struggle and look at the end bit," Postecoglou said last week.

Elsewhere, crisis-hit Roma welcome Athletic Bilbao to the Stadio Olimpico, hoping to continue their strong recent form in Europe.

The Serie A club have reached at least the Europa League semi-finals in three of the past four seasons -- the exception their 2022 Conference League triumph under Jose Mourinho.

However, Roma supporters were left furious by the sacking of coach Daniele De Rossi, venting their fury at management and players they consider responsible during Sunday's win over Udinese.

The anger at De Rossi's dismissal has been such that CEO Lina Souloukou, who resigned on Saturday morning, had been placed under police protection after online threats made against her and family.

A banner hung outside Roma's Trigoria training ground described Greek Souloukou, who was previously CEO of Olympiakos, as "evil".

Other Europa League fixtures include 2022 winners Eintracht Frankfurt hosting Viktoria Plzen, while four-time European champions Ajax take on Besiktas in Amsterdam.

Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur aim to start better in Europa League

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta insists he has moved on from the Erling Haaland row as his side prepares for the League Cup tie against Bolton Wanderers on Wednesday (Sep 25). Arsenal, who&nbsp;almost won at the Etihad Stadium in the Premier League were denied three points after John Stones scored a stoppage-time equaliser. After the goal, Haaland was deemed to have thrown a ball at Gabriel Jesus while there were also words exchanged between the Norwegian and Arteta.

<h2>Arteta moves on from Haaland row</h2>

"We have already moved on and we are now ready to battle again tomorrow," Arteta said while addressing the pre-match press conference ahead of the Bolton clash.

"The team, the desire that they have to compete in any context, to win, to adapt to different circumstances, different competitions, different ways of playing and handle that emotionally and physically, the way we've done it is superb."

The game at the Etihad Stadium saw both sides give their best with Arsenal taking the lead after Haaland had scored the opening goal. However, the referee was in the spotlight for two decisions that influenced the match. Arsenal pushed for an attack while the City skipper was out of position and speaking to referee Michael Oliver. On the other hand, Leandro Trossard was shown a second yellow card for kicking the ball away while he was already on a yellow card.

After City’s equaliser tempers flared as Haaland first threw the ball at Jesus which was not inspected by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) while the Norwegian attempted to shoulder push Thomas Partey after Arsenal restarted the match. He was not done there as he also exchanged words with Arteta after the match was over.

The 2-2 draw between Man City and Arsenal also meant both sides are unbeaten at the start of the Premier League season. Both are expected to give a tough fight for the Premier League title having been on the rise for the last two seasons.

'We have already moved on': Mikel Arteta puts behind Erling Haaland row as Arsenal get ready for Bolton

Vinicius Junior's decisive impact helped Real Madrid come from behind to beat a determined Espanyol side 4-1 on Saturday and move a point behind La Liga leaders&nbsp;Barcelona. The Brazilian started on the bench but created a goal for Rodrygo Goes before scoring himself to complete Madrid's turnaround after a Thibaut Courtois own goal gifted the visitors the lead early in the second half.

Dani Carvajal levelled for Madrid soon afterwards before Vinicius took the reins, with Kylian Mbappe adding a late penalty to net in his fourth consecutive game for the club. Hansi Flick's side, boasting a perfect record of five wins from five matches, visit unbeaten Villarreal, fourth, on Sunday, looking to restore their four-point lead.

"It was hard for us to score goals in the first half but we made so many chances," midfielder Luka Modric told Real Madrid TV. "The team played well... we had a great game and we can be happy, but we have to continue (like this)."

The comprehensive victory was Madrid's 38th consecutive La Liga game without defeat, their last loss in the competition coming just under a year ago, against Atletico Madrid in September 2023.

"That says a lot, not losing games in so many weeks is really nice, but we have to continue," added Modric. "It's quality, character, commitment from the team, everyone is ready when called on... those are the key factors."

With a packed calendar, Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti rested Vinicius at the outset, opting for Arda Guler in his place alongside Mbappe and Rodrygo.

Madrid had a stranglehold on the first half without being able to make the breakthrough, with Mbappe heavily involved, hunting for his sixth goal of the season across all competitions.

Espanyol goalkeeper Joan Garcia made a fine save at his near post to thwart the France captain's effort from a tight angle.

Eder Militao headed narrowly over from the subsequent corner and Mbappe had another long-range effort stopped as well as slashing a shot off-target.

Increasingly frustrated, Mbappe was booked for protesting against a decision called against him.

<h2>- Pressure and patience -</h2>

Jude Bellingham fired in a vicious drive from the edge of the box but Garcia saved comfortably to send the teams in goalless at the break.

Madrid have been able to score just one first half goal in eight matches this season.

Carlos Romero came close for the promoted visitors early in the second period with a strike that flew off-target, but it was mostly one-way traffic in the direction of Garcia's goal.

Madrid were therefore stunned when the visitors took the lead in the 54th minute, with Courtois clumsily deflecting Jofre Carreras' cross into his own net.

Ancelotti sent on Vinicius immediately but it was Carvajal who levelled four minutes later, tapping home on the line after Bellingham's cross squirmed away from the previously flawless Garcia.

Madrid turned the screw and claimed their rewards as Espanyol's resistance crumbled, with Vinicius producing a sublime cross with the outside of his boot to tee up Rodrygo for the second.

Mbappe unselfishly slipped Vinicius through on goal to tuck home for Madrid's third and the&nbsp;former Paris-Saint Germain star dispatched a late penalty himself to complete a sizeable victory.

Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha struck twice each as&nbsp;Barcelona&nbsp;romped to a 5-1 win at Villarreal on Sunday in a wild match to maintain their perfect start to La Liga. The leaders' sixth straight league triumph was marred by an potentially serious knee injury to goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen, who was taken off on a stretcher.

"I think it will be a huge injury, when he laid down on the field... you can see it directly,"&nbsp;Barcelona&nbsp;coach Hansi Flick told DAZN.

Lewandowski netted&nbsp;Barcelona's first two goals and later missed a penalty in a thoroughly entertaining battle on Spain's east coast at Villarreal's Estadio de la Ceramica.

Ayoze Perez pulled his team back into the game shortly before half-time and the hosts had two goals disallowed, with Pablo Torre and Raphinha's strikes cementing&nbsp;Barcelona's victory.

After second-placed Real Madrid thrashed Espanyol 4-1 on Saturday the Catalans were able to restore a four-point lead on the champions.

"It's very important for us that we played a game away from home, we scored five goals and in the end we have three points," said Lewandowski. "In the end it doesn't matter how, as long as we win that's perfect."

Flick gave Eric Garcia another start in defensive midfield despite his early red card against Monaco in the Champions League midweek. The German coach also started reserve team players Gerard Martin and Sergi Dominguez, as well as playmaker Torre in place of the injured Dani Olmo.

Teenage star Lamine Yamal hit the post early on before Lewandowski slotted home in the 20th minute after Torre slipped him in.

Villarreal goalkeeper Diego Conde did well to keep out a bundled effort from the Polish striker but Lewandowski pounced after 35 minutes for his second.

Conde saved Garcia's header well but the former Bayern Munich hitman converted the rebound with an acrobatic finish from close range.

It was his sixth La Liga goal of the season, taking him two clear of Real Madrid's Kylian Mbappe in Spain's golden boot race.

<h2>- Frantic clash -</h2>

Villarreal were frequently threatening on the counter and Perez gave them a lifeline after the electric Nicolas Pepe set him up.

Ter Stegen thwarted Pepe with a sensational save one-on-one before half-time but the German was soon stricken as he fell badly after catching a corner before the break and was replaced by Inaki Pena.

Pepe finished brilliantly early in the second half but his effort was disallowed for a marginal offside call, and Yeremy Pino hit the bar with a header as Marcelino Garcia Toral's side drove&nbsp;Barcelona&nbsp;back.

Torre extended Barca's lead with a deflected strike from the edge of the box, a killer blow given Villarreal's momentum.

Lewandowski hit the post from the spot after Eric Bailly scythed down Yamal and Villarreal's Thierno Barry had a goal ruled out for offside.

Raphinha ended any hopes of a home comeback, first with a deflected shot and then finishing after a superb Yamal pass left him with just Conde to beat.

Despite the emphatic victory and 100 percent start, if Ter Stegen's injury proves to be severe it could dent&nbsp;Barcelona's title hopes.

Pressure and patience Jude Bellingham fired in a vicious drive from the edge of the box but Garcia saved comfortably to send the teams in goalless at the break. Mbappe unselfishly slipped Vinicius through on goal to tuck home for Madrid's third and the former Paris-Saint Germain star dispatched a late penalty himself to complete a sizeable victory. Premier League: Luis Diaz fires Liverpool top, Spurs bounce back against Brentford

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou has defended record signing Dominic Solanke as the striker searches for his first goal for the club, confirming they also considered a move for Ivan Toney in the summer transfer window.

Spurs signed Solanke from Bournemouth last month in a deal worth up to £65 million ($86 million) but his start has been disrupted by an ankle injury sustained in his debut at Leicester.

Toney was the other high-profile England forward on the market but he eventually left Brentford to join Saudi Pro League side Al-Ahli, meaning Spurs will not face him on Saturday when the Bees make the trip across London.

Solanke, 27, has played three matches for Tottenham but has yet to find the net. Last season he scored 21 goals in all competitions for Bournemouth.

Postecoglou told his pre-match press conference on Friday that Tottenham had considered a move for Toney, who featured for England at Euro 2024 in Germany.

"We did look at him (Toney) but, I have said, Dom was the one I wanted and it took pretty much the whole summer to get him in because he was the one who fitted the profile of what we were looking for at the time," said Postecoglou.

"People are just so quick to judge, mate. It's a small sample.

"If he has gone 15 games without a goal then I can answer that question or 15 games where he hasn't contributed, but I just think take a breath. Do a bit of yoga. Think about the world for a second and make an assessment after that."

Postecoglou, whose team have won just one of their opening four Premier League fixtures, said Solanke, who will start against mid-table Brentford, had fitted in well at the club.

"I haven't sensed (anxiety)," he said of the former Liverpool player, who has one cap for England.

"I don't sense that. In his mind, I think he just wants to be in a good physical condition so he can contribute. That is where he is at and the space we want him in.

"Hopefully, he gets a bit of confidence out of the game time he got during the week and builds on that tomorrow. I'm sure as the season goes on he will be a real strong contributor for us."

Premier League: Ange Postecoglou defends Dominic Solanke after slow start to Spurs career

Pep Guardiola admits Manchester City will have an "advantage" when they face Arsenal on an extra day's rest, but the champions are sweating on Kevin De Bruyne's fitness for the crucial clash with their title rivals.

Guardiola's side played at home in their Champions League draw with Inter Milan on Wednesday, while Arsenal had to wait until Thursday to travel to Italy for their goalless stalemate against Atalanta.

Guardiola believes the additional 24 hours of recovery could play a role in deciding the first meeting this term between the clubs that have finished first and second for the last two seasons.

City won both of those title races to leave Arsenal still waiting for their first English crown since 2004.

A victory at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday would be a significant boost to City's hopes of an unprecedented fifth successive Premier League title, with Guardiola grateful for a rare piece of help from the fixture schedulers.

"It is an advantage but I am going to make a list in the last six years of how many times we faced a tough team with an extra day of rest. It is a very long list," he said with a healthy dose of sarcasm.

City's recovery time advantage might be offset by the potential absence of Belgium midfielder De Bruyne after he limped off during the goalless draw against Inter.

Asked if De Bruyne would be fit to face Arsenal, Guardiola said: "He feels a bit better today. Tomorrow we're training and we'll see. He could be involved."

Fuelled by Erling Haaland's nine goals, City have already established themselves as the team to beat once again this season.

<h2>Both years have been so close</h2>

The champions, who boast a 100 per cent record after four league games, sit two points ahead of Arsenal, who have won three and drawn one.

But Guardiola has a healthy respect for the threat posed by Arsenal after the north Londoners took the title fight down to the final day last season.

"The set pieces are not easy because they are taller than us. They defend the space, they are incredible with the runners," he said.

"It is always two against one with Gabriel (Magalhaes) and (William) Saliba focused on Erling. That is why it is difficult to play them. I have to read well the way we have to do it."

Although they finished above them, City failed to beat Arsenal last term, losing 1-0 at the Emirates Stadium, drawing 0-0 in Manchester and suffering a penalty shoot-out defeat in the Community Shield.

"It's always been a tight game in the last few years," Guardiola said. "They do many good things. They're a complete team, which is why they've been our biggest rivals in the last two seasons.

"Every season they are better and better. Both years have been close, but we have been so strong and we are still strong."

City would move five points clear of Arsenal with a first victory over them since April 2023.

But Guardiola insists it is far too early in the season for the result to be regarded as significant no matter who wins.

"In this early stage of the season, nothing more than the mood over the next few games will be decided. In terms of the table it's not really important," he said.

"It'll be more important when we go to London in the second half of the season."

Premier League: Man City have rest 'advantage' in Arsenal showdown - Pep Guardiola

French club Monaco upset 10-man Barcelona by grinding out a 2-1 victory on Thursday in the Champions League, while a stunning David Raya double-save ensured Arsenal a goalless draw away to Europa League winners Atalanta. Barca have started the season with a perfect record after five La Liga matches but, hindered by a red card in the 11th minute for Eric Garcia, fell to defeat on the French Riviera.

Maghnes Akliouche fired the French side into the lead five minutes after Garcia was dismissed for a last-man challenge on Takumi Minamino. Teenage sensation Lamine Yamal equalised in the 28th minute with an arrowed shot after cutting in from the right onto his favoured left foot, but George Ilenikhena grabbed the winner for Monaco inside the final 20 minutes.

"After 10 minutes with the red card the game changed totally, but what I can see is really the positive thing," Barcelona coach Hansi Flick told reporters. "We tried to defend as a team and also attack as a team, and we had chances, but today they deserve the 2-1 (win), so we have to accept that."

In Italy, Arsenal goalkeeper Raya earned his side a point in a tough start to their campaign against Atalanta with a 0-0 draw. A tight match was lit up six minutes after the interval when Mateo Retegui saw Raya plunge down to his right to keep out his penalty, after a foul by Thomas Partey on Ederson.

The ball rebounded up in the air and Retegui looked set to casually nod the dropping ball into the gaping net but the Spaniard sprang to his feet and hurled himself back across the goal-line to claw the ball to safety.

"It's just a penalty and I was lucky to go the right way and save it," Raya told TNT Sports.&nbsp;"I was unlucky to give the rebound straight back to him but I was quick enough to get up and save it."

A 90th-minute header by Jose Maria Gimenez sent Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone scuttling down the touchline in delight as his side edged visitors RB Leipzig 2-1. Benjamin Sesko had put the German side in front just four minutes in, but Antoine Griezmann equalised just prior to the half-hour with a controlled finish from inside the penalty area.

The Frenchman then turned provider as he chipped a cross into the box, which Gimenez leapt highest to win at the back post and glance the ball back across Peter Gulacsi and into the Leipzig goal to spark wild celebrations in the Metropolitano Stadium.

"It's amazing, to get a last-minute goal like this is always fantastic and it's good to give the fans something to cheer about," Atletico's former Leipzig striker Alexander Sorloth told DAZN.

Bayer Leverkusen starlet Florian Wirtz enjoyed a dream Champions League debut as the Bundesliga champions thumped Dutch side Feyenoord 4-0 away from home. The 21-year-old scored a brace either side of an Alex Grimaldo strike before an own goal by Feyenoord goalkeeper Timon Wellenreuther ensured Leverkusen had the points wrapped up by half-time.

"It may have looked pretty easy, but it's really not," Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso told reporters. "Overall it was a very serious, very efficient performance from us, but it's never easy."

French side Brest made a winning start in their first-ever appearance in European competition by seeing off Austria's Sturm Graz 2-1. Playing at Brittany rivals Guingamp's home ground as their own stadium does not meet UEFA standards, Brest took the lead midway through the first half through Hugo Magnetti.

An own-goal by Edimilson Fernandes on the stroke of half-time levelled matters but Abdallah Sima's smart finish in the 56th minute was enough to divide the sides. Benfica held on in Serbia against Red Star Belgrade to claim a 2-1 win courtesy of goals in the first half by Turkish duo Kerem Akturkoglu and Orkun Kokcu.

The second matchday of the Champions League league phase will take place on October 1 and 2 with Arsenal hosting Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern Munich travelling to Aston Villa and reigning champions Real Madrid visiting Lille.

Barcelona stunned by Monaco as Arsenal held in UEFA Champions League stalemate

Aleksey Miranchuk scored late to give Atlanta a 2-2 Major League Soccer draw against Inter Miami on Wednesday, with&nbsp;Lionel&nbsp;Messi&nbsp;unable to conjure any magic as a late substitute for the visitors. Eight-time Ballon d'Or winner&nbsp;Messi&nbsp;had dazzled in his return from a lengthy injury absence on Saturday, scoring two goals in the space of four minutes in Miami's 3-1 victory over Philadelphia.

But coach Gerardo Martino said he would be careful not to overwork his superstar in a three-match week, and&nbsp;Messi&nbsp;was held out of the starting lineup in Atlanta along with former Barcelona teammates Luis Suarez and Jordi Alba. Miami have secured an MLS Cup Eastern Conference playoff berth and with 63 points lead the race for the Supporters' Shield, awarded to the team that tops the overall standings.

The Florida team led 2-1 on goals from David Ruiz and Leonardo Campana when&nbsp;Messi&nbsp;entered the match in the 61st minute. The Argentinian superstar came close to a game-clinching goal in the 83rd, but his angled effort was blocked by Atlanta goalkeeper Brad Guzan and Suarez's attempt to tap in the rebound was also denied.

A minute later Russia's Miranchuk, signed by Atlanta from Europa League winners Atalanta at the end of July, produced a sensational left-footed shot from outside the area.

Inter had led 1-0 at half-time courtesy of 20-year-old David Ruiz's first goal of the season. Ruiz, making his first start since June 15 in a lineup that featured just three of Miami's regular starters, took advantage of a through ball from Argentina's Franco Negri to slot home a well-placed shot.

Atlanta pulled level in the 56th through Saba Lobzhanidze, whose header hit defender Ian Fray and slipped through the legs of goalkeeper Drake Callender.

Campana put Miami back in front in the 59th, scoring from a free kick to surpass Argentina's Gonzalo Higuain as Inter Miami's all-time leading scorer with his 30th.&nbsp;Messi's entrance seemed to galvanize both teams as well as enraptured spectators at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, where fans were disappointed when the Argentine superstar sat out a game last year.

But it was Atlanta who ultimately capitalised on the energy boost. While&nbsp;Messi, Alba and Suarez came in as substitutes in the second half, Miami were without suspended Sergio Busquets and Tomas Aviles as well as injured David Martinez and Diego Gomez.

Martino watched the game from a suite as he served a suspension for an accumulation of yellow cards. "It was a tough game, especially when we came to play here it's a tough stadium to play and a difficult team," Miami assistant coach Javier Morales said. "But I think we had a good performance.

Aleksey Miranchuk scored late to give Atlanta a 2-2 Major League Soccer draw against Inter Miami on Wednesday, with Lionel Messi unable to conjure any magic as a late substitute for the visitors.

Aleksey Miranchuk scored late to give Atlanta a 2-2 Major League Soccer draw against Inter Miami on Wednesday, with Lionel Messi unable to conjure any magic as a late substitute for the visitors. Eight-time Ballon d'Or winner Messi had dazzled in his return from a lengthy injury absence on Saturday, scoring two goals in the space of four minutes in Miami's 3-1 victory over Philadelphia. But coach Gerardo Martino said he would be careful not to overwork his superstar in a three-match week, and Messi was held out of the starting lineup in Atlanta along with former Barcelona teammates Luis Suarez and Jordi Alba. Miami have secured an MLS Cup Eastern Conference playoff berth and with 63 points lead the race for the Supporters' Shield, awarded to the team that tops the overall standings. The Florida team led 2-1 on goals from David Ruiz and Leonardo Campana when Messi entered the match in the 61st minute. Campana put Miami back in front in the 59th, scoring from a free kick to surpass Argentina's Gonzalo Higuain as Inter Miami's all-time leading scorer with his 30th. MLS: Aleksey Miranchuk grabs equalizer as Atlanta hold Messi's Inter Miami to 2-2 draw

Manchester City made a sluggish start to their Champions League campaign as they drew 0-0 against Inter Milan on Wednesday, while Paris Saint-Germain needed a last-minute goal to beat tournament newcomers Girona. Pep Guardiola's side have won all four of their Premier League games this season but failed to break down Italian champions Inter in a repeat of the 2023 final won by City.

City lost Kevin De Bruyne to injury at half-time and Phil Foden fired straight at Inter goalkeeper Yann Sommer with their best chance as Erling Haaland was kept quiet on a night he was chasing his 100th goal for the English club.

"It was a very intense game against a strong opponent. We knew what was coming, they are a top team as well and they are used to winning, so we were not going to have an easy job," City defender Ruben Dias told TNT Sports.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan could have won it for Inter when he blazed over 15 minutes from time, allowing City to extend their unbeaten run in the competition to 24 matches -- one off the record set by Manchester United between 2007 and 2009.

It is just the second time in 42 home Champions League games under Guardiola that City have failed to score. "Our plan was to show that we're not scared to play here," said Inter midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu.

PSG&nbsp;looked as if they would also have to settle for a point against European debutants Girona, who are backed by the City Football Group and ran Real Madrid close for several months in Spain last season before coming third.

However, a goalkeeping blunder from Paulo Gazzaniga in the 90th minute resulted in Nuno Mendes' cross squirming through his grasp and handed the French champions victory.

"It was a difficult game, they're a team that plays well with the ball," Mendes told Canal Plus. "I was surprised (by the goal). The goalkeeper was there and it got through."

<h2>- Super-sub Gittens propels Dortmund -</h2>

Last season's runners-up Borussia Dortmund, beaten by Madrid in the final, had English winger Jamie Gittens to thank as the 20-year-old came off the bench and scored twice in a 3-0 win at Club Brugge. Serhou Guirassy added a stoppage-time penalty for his first Dortmund goal since arriving in the summer from Stuttgart.

Celtic began in style by thrashing Slovan Bratislava 5-1 in Glasgow, winning their opening game in the Champions League for the first time in 13 attempts. Liam Scales' powerful header put Celtic ahead and the hosts struck again through Kyogo Furuhashi early in the second half before Arne Engels converted a penalty for 3-0.

Kevin Wimmer pulled one back with a fine strike for the Slovak champions, who came through four rounds of qualifying, but Celtic pulled away with further goals from Daizen Maeda and Adam Idah.

"It's a fantastic night," Celtic captain Callum McGregor told TNT Sports. "I hope the supporters enjoyed it because the managers and players did. This is the next level for the group in terms of growth and development."

Bologna drew 0-0 at home to Shakhtar Donetsk in the Italian team's first ever Champions League match. Lukasz Skorupski saved an early penalty from Shakhtar's Georgiy Sudakov.

Sparta Prague swept Red Bull Salzburg aside 3-0 with goals from Kaan Kairinen, Victor Olatunji and Qazim Laci, as the Czech champions won for the first time in the competition proper since 2003.
