Manchester United on Wednesday reported a bigger annual net loss, marking the fifth consecutive year of financial losses for the English club, and said core profit this financial year could be lower due to its restructuring initiatives. Its net loss widened to 113.2 million pounds ($148.14 million) in the year ended June 30, from 28.7 million pounds a year earlier.

Despite that, United achieved record annual revenue of 661.8 million pounds, up 2.1% compared with the previous year, as the men's team reaped the benefits of participating in the lucrative UEFA Champions League competition.

Belgium captain Kevin De Bruyne's future with the national side has been thrown into doubt after he slammed his teammates as "not good enough" after a 2-0 Nations League defeat to France.

The 33-year-old Manchester City midfielder vented his frustration at the players and coach Domenico Tedesco's tactics after Monday's loss in Lyon.

De Bruyne complained a lot was not right with the Red Devils -- third in the 2018 World Cup -- who sank after a promising first 20 minutes.

"There were six of us at the back. Even in the second half when we were trailing it was like that," he told Flemish television VTM.&nbsp;

"It's our way of playing that is in question. There are players who did not fulfil their role, full stop."

"If you are not good enough, you still have to give everything, which some people aren't doing. I can accept that we are no longer at the level of 2018 but things are unacceptable."

De Bruyne was also filmed on the sidelines saying several times to technical director Franky Vercauteren "Ik stop" ("I stop") with the national team.&nbsp;

Belgian media reported that De Bruyne also made comments in the locker room that were hurtful to his teammates.

But Tedesco insisted he did not believe that the 107-times capped player was set to exit.

"Kevin is a winner, it's normal for him to be disappointed. But I don't fear his departure,” said Tedesco.

Belgium are third in League A Group 2, level on three points with France, with Italy leading with six points.

On Tuesday, visiting a children's hospital in Brussels, De Bruyne said he had "slept little" but it was "neither the place nor the time to talk about football".&nbsp;

FIFA World Cup 2026 Qualifiers: China's hopes take a dent after loss vs Saudi Arabia

Italy kept up their perfect start to the UEFA Nations League on Monday, while France got the better of Belgium and Erling Haaland struck a late winner for Norway against Austria.

The Italians built on an impressive win away in France at the weekend as they beat Israel 2-1 in a game played on neutral territory in Budapest due to the security situation in the Middle East.

Goals in each half from Davide Frattesi and Moise Kean were enough for Italy to win in a subdued atmosphere at the Bozsik Arena, home of Honved.

Luciano Spalletti's team have reacted well to their disastrous European Championship title defence, which ended at the last-16 stage, and deserved their second win in a matter of days.

Frattesi followed his goal in the 3-1 win in France by chesting home Federico Dimarco's pinpoint cross in the 38th minute to open the scoring.

Fiorentina striker Kean made it 2-0 just after the hour mark with his first Italy goal in almost exactly three years, before Mohamed Abu Fani pulled one back at the end for Israel.

Italy are top of Nations League Group A2 with the maximum six points, while France and Belgium are level on three points apiece.

France beat Belgium 2-0 in Lyon, with Randal Kolo Muani and Ousmane Dembele getting the goals as the home side won despite captain Kylian Mbappe being left out of the starting line-up.

The game was a repeat of the Euro 2024 last-16 tie which France won 1-0 in Duesseldorf thanks to a late own goal.

This time, Les Bleus went ahead just before the half-hour mark, Kolo Muani applying the finish after Dembele's mishit shot was pushed out by Belgian goalkeeper Koen Casteels.

A Belgian side captained by Kevin De Bruyne could not find an equaliser and France scored again on 57 minutes thanks to a fine individual effort by Dembele.

The Paris Saint-Germain winger skipped inside from the right wing before blasting a shot into the net on his left foot.

<h2>Sesko hat-trick, Wales win</h2>

In Group B3, Norway beat Austria 2-1 in Oslo as Manchester City star Haaland fired in the winner 10 minutes from time.

Felix Myhre gave Norway an early lead only for Marcel Sabitzer of Borussia Dortmund to equalise for Austria before the break.

However, Haaland -- who drew a blank in Norway's 0-0 draw in Kazakhstan on Friday -- showed trademark strength inside the box to hold off his marker and fire in the winner, with the goal given after a long VAR check for a possible offside.

In the same group, RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko bagged a hat-trick as Slovenia beat Kazakhstan 3-0 in Ljubljana.

In Group B4, Wales followed their goalless draw against Turkey by beating Montenegro 2-1 away for their first win under new coach Craig Bellamy.

They got off to a terrific start, with Kieffer Moore and Harry Wilson both scoring inside the first three minutes. Driton Camaj then pulled one back for the hosts.

Turkey beat Iceland 3-1 in Izmir, a game in which Kerem Akturkoglu of Benfica hit a hat-trick.

There were also wins on Monday for Romania and Kosovo respectively in League C.

Nations League: France, Italy register vital wins, Erling Haaland on target for Norway

France coach Didier Deschamps said he has no concerns about the form of Kylian&nbsp; Mbappe&nbsp;and expects Real Madrid's new forward to rediscover his scoring touch when he reaches full fitness. After France opened their Nations League campaign with a 3-1 defeat by Italy in Paris, Deschamps fielded a much-changed team against Belgium on Monday, with&nbsp;Mbappe&nbsp;and Antoine Griezmann starting on the bench in their 2-0 win.

Mbappe&nbsp;struggled at Euro 2024 after breaking his nose against Austria and took four games before scoring his first league goals for Madrid after his move from Paris St Germain. "The French team will always be stronger with him and I’m convinced that in a month he will be better," Deschamps said. "There are very high demands in his club. I have no worries with Kylian."

Mbappe&nbsp;was brought on in the 67th against Belgium and looked bright as he tried to add his name to the scoresheet, missing narrowly from a tight angle 10 minutes from time and having an effort saved in the 86th minute. Michael Olise and Manu Kone were handed their first caps against Italy while Lucas Digne played his first game for France in more than two years against Belgium, with Matteo Guendouzi also returning.

Deschamps says he is using the Nations League as a platform to widen the pool of talent at his disposal and plans to continue down that path regardless of the results. "I'm sticking to my course, to put as many players as possible in situations where we can test them," he said. "It is the time to do that even if it you lose games. You don't replace players with 50 caps by snapping your fingers.

"I'm well aware that I am not putting the team in the best conditions," he said of the numerous changes to the line-up. "But we have to go through it. It gives us answers."

Manchester United have agreed a partnership with local authorities to investigate how plans to rebuild or replace Old Trafford would impact the area around the club's iconic stadium.

The Old Trafford Regeneration Task Force was set up in March under the chairmanship of World Athletics president Sebastian Coe.

It is understood to be focused on discussions over building a new 100,000-capacity stadium rather than redeveloping Old Trafford, the 74,310-capacity home for United since 1910.

However, no firm decision on the best way forward is set to be taken until the end of the year.

On Monday, United announced the club would be represented on an advisory team looking at how a new or redeveloped stadium can spark wider social and economic regeneration.

Trafford Council and the Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA) are also involved in the new partnership, United said.

"The objective of this once-in-a-generation project is not only the development of a world-class stadium for the north of England, but also to ensure that this brings broad social and economic benefits to the local area and surrounding region," Coe said.

United co-owner Jim Ratcliffe said in February that the regeneration project, with a new stadium at its heart, would cost £2 billion ($2.6 billion).

The British billionaire believes a new ground for United could be a northern rival to Wembley.&nbsp;

He previously said the project should attract some taxpayer funding.

"People in the north pay their taxes and there is an argument that you could think about a more ambitious project in the north which would be fitting for England, for the Champions League final or the FA Cup final and act as a catalyst to regenerate southern Manchester, which has got quite significant history in the UK," Ratcliffe said.

Manchester United partners with local authorities for Old Trafford revamp

Steven Bergwijn has hit back at Netherlands manager Ronald Koeman after closing the doors for the forward in the national team on Friday (Sep 6). Bergwijn, who moved to the Saudi Pro League (SPL) earlier in the month after signing for Al-Ittihad was criticised by Koeman, stating the move is unwanted for a 26-year-old footballer. The spat also saw Koeman publically close the doors for Bergwijn while the winger also now insists that he won’t play for the Dutch manager.

<h2>Bergwijn takes jibe at Koeman</h2>

"The national coach knows very well that the competition in Saudi Arabia is at a great level. Or are you only allowed to take such a step when you are 32?" Bergwijn questioned.

Bergwijn became the latest hot property in Europe to join the SPL having completed his move from Ajax. Considering the majority of the big-name players are heading to SPL in the twilight of their careers, the move from Bergwijn came as a surprise for many. The former Tottenham Hotspur forward has still got plenty to offer in Europe.

However, according to Koeman, the move to SPL was money-driven and had nothing to do with football.

"The book is basically closed to him. "When you are 26, your main ambition should be sporting, not financial. These are choices that players make," Koeman stated during a press conference.

Bergwijn after his move to SPL was not picked for the ongoing international break as the Netherlands were in action in the Nations League. The Dutch had a productive European campaign where Bergwijn was part of the side. The Netherlands reached the semifinals of the Euro 2024 before Ollie Watkins scored a late winner for England in Dortmund to end their run.

Alexis Mac Allister, Julian Alvarez and Paulo Dybala were on target as Argentina tightened their grip on South America's 2026 World Cup qualifying tournament with a 3-0 win over Chile on Thursday. Liverpool midfielder Mac Allister swept in a low finish three minutes after half-time to break the deadlock at the Estadio Monumental in Buenos Aires against a defensive Chile side.

Former Manchester City striker Alvarez doubled the lead in the 84th minute with a thumping shot from outside the area before substitute Dybala put the seal on the victory with a late strike in stoppage time. It was another clinical victory for the reigning world champions, who are now cruising towards confirming their place at the 2026 finals being staged in the United States, Mexico and Canada.

Lionel Scaloni's team lead South America's 10-team round-robin qualifying table by five points after seven games. The top six teams in the final standings qualify automatically for the 2026 finals in North America with the seventh-placed team advancing to a playoff.

Argentina, who also beat Chile 1-0 on their way to clinching back-to-back Copa America titles earlier this year, went into Thursday's game missing injured captain Lionel Messi and veteran winger Angel Di Maria, who retired from international football after the Copa America triumph in July.

Di Maria was feted by his former teammates at a pre-game ceremony before taking his place in the stands to watch the world champions secure their sixth win from seven qualifying games. Despite the absence of Messi and Di Maria, Argentina had plenty of creative guile in attack with Lautaro Martinez and Atletico Madrid's Alvarez causing problems for the Chile defense.

Argentina, meanwhile, controlled midfield with Mac Allister lining up alongside Rodrigo De Paul and Enzo Fernandez. After a cagey first-half, the breakthrough came in the 48th minute when Alvarez whipped in a low cross from the right.

Martinez dummied cleverly and allowed the ball to roll through to Mac Allister, who guided an accurate shot into the bottom corner.

<h2>- Bolivia thrash Venezuela -</h2>

In Thursday's other qualifier, Bolivia reignited their campaign with a 4-0 drubbing over Venezuela in a game played more than 4,000m (13,100 feet) above sea level. Goals from Ramiro Vaca, Carmelo Algaranaz, Miguel Terceros and Enzo Monteiro handed Bolivia only their second win of qualifying and lifted them into seventh place in the standings.

The result was a vindication of Bolivia's move to play Thursday's game in El Alto -- Spanish for "The Heights" -- rather than at their usual home venue in neighboring La Paz, which is 3,600m above sea level. The thin air of El Alto clearly left Venezuela's players struggling for energy against a Bolivian team aiming to qualify for their first World Cup since reaching the 1994 finals in the United States.

Despite his team's heavy loss, Venezuela coach Fernando Batista refused to dwell on the altitude issue after the game. "Out of 10 questions, eight are about altitude," Batista said. "You won't hear anything from me about it."

The pick of Bolivia's goals came from Vaca after just 13 minutes. The 25-year-old midfielder gathered the ball around 30 yards from goal, cut in from the left and unleashed a ferocious shot which flew into the top corner.

Venezuela, the only team from South America never to have qualified for a World Cup, remain well-placed to reach the finals despite Thursday's loss. The 'Vinotinto' are fourth in the standings with nine points from seven games, trailing Argentina, Uruguay and Colombia.

Venezuela host Uruguay next Tuesday in their eighth game of qualifying.&nbsp;South America's qualifiers continue on Friday with second-placed Uruguay hosting Paraguay in Montevideo while struggling Brazil, who are 11 points adrift of leaders Argentina in sixth, face Ecuador in Curitiba.

Third-placed Colombia, meanwhile, travel to Lima to face bottom-of-the-table Peru.

Spain were held by Serbia in the UEFA Nations League on Thursday in their first game since winning Euro 2024, while Cristiano Ronaldo reached another milestone by scoring his 900th career goal as Portugal beat Croatia. Eight of Spain's starting line-up in their Euro 2024 final victory over England almost two months ago were on the field at kick-off against Serbia in Belgrade.

Among them was Lamine Yamal, with the Barcelona prodigy just one of the Spain players to be denied by home goalkeeper Predrag Rajkovic. Luis de la Fuente's team are also the reigning Nations League champions having won the most recent edition of the tournament last year.

They will now hope to register their first victory in League A, Group 4 when they travel to face Switzerland in Geneva on Sunday. The Swiss lost 2-0 to Denmark on Thursday, with Patrick Dorgu and captain Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg scoring late goals for the home side in Copenhagen.

Switzerland finished the match with nine men as both Nico Elvedi and Granit Xhaka were sent off in the second half. In Lisbon, Ronaldo's 900th career goal proved to be the winner as 2019 Nations League champions Portugal edged Croatia 2-1 in Group A1.

Ronaldo, 39, put behind him a disappointing Euro 2024 in which he failed to score as he turned in a Nuno Mendes cross in the 34th minute at the Estadio da Luz to reach the landmark. He appeared emotional as he celebrated the goal, his 131st in a Portugal shirt. Half of his goals were scored for Real Madrid, with the remainder spread across his spells at Sporting Lisbon, Manchester United and current club Al-Nassr.

Diogo Dalot's goal had put Portugal in front early on before Ronaldo netted, with a Dalot own-goal reducing the deficit before the break.

<h2>- Scotland lose to Poland -</h2>

Portugal next host Scotland, who lost 3-2 to Poland at Hampden Park, with the visitors grabbing the victory thanks to a 97th-minute Nicola Zalewski penalty. Poland had been 2-0 up as Sebastian Szymanski gave them an early lead and captain Robert Lewandowski added a penalty just before the break.

However, Billy Gilmour pulled one back for League A newcomers Scotland moments after the restart, and Scott McTominay equalised before Roma's Zalewski sneaked his spot-kick under Angus Gunn deep into stoppage time.

Elsewhere, there were wins for Slovakia and Northern Ireland in League C, while Sweden -- now being coached by Jon Dahl Tomasson -- beat Azerbaijan 3-1 away in Baku with Newcastle United's Alexander Isak netting twice.

History was made in League D as San Marino, the world's worst team according to the FIFA rankings, beat Liechtenstein 1-0 to claim their first ever competitive win.

The tiny country of barely 30,000 people, surrounded by Italy, came into the match at their San Marino Stadium looking for a first win of any sort since beating Liechtenstein in a friendly in 2004.

Liechtenstein had a goal disallowed for a tight offside in the first half before San Marino pounced on a defensive error to grab the winner in the 53rd minute through Nicko Sensoli.

Euro winners Spain held in Nations League, Ronaldo scores 900th goal during Portugal's win over Croatia

Portugal’s legendary striker Cristiano Ronaldo had yet another record-clinching evening on Thursday (Sep 5) after he scored his 900th career goal against Croatia in a 2-1 win. While the evening belonged to his 900th goal landmark, Ronaldo also spoke on his achievement and stated that winning the Euro 2016 was equivalent to winning the FIFA World Cup. The Portugal international has never won the World Cup while his opposite number from Argentina – Lionel Messi has won both the World Cup and the Copa America.

<h2>Ronaldo makes bold statement</h2>

“I don't need to win the World Cup. Winning the Euro with my country is like winning the World Cup. I have already won two titles with the national team,” Ronaldo said after scoring his 900th career goal on Thursday.

The night saw the 38-year-old score his 900th career goal spanning a career for over two decades. He scored the second goal in the 2-1 win over Croatia in the Nations League opener. The Portugal star who now plays in the Saudi Pro League (SPL) is yet to win the FIFA World Cup in his career having reached the semifinals of the tournament in 2006.

Ronaldo added: “Scoring 900 goals seems like any other milestone, but only I know how hard it is to work every day to score your 900th goal.

“It’s a unique milestone in my career.

“I don’t break records… they haunt me!”

On the other hand, Messi has won the Copa America twice and has twice been runners-up. In addition, Messi also won the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar while he was runner-up in the 2014 tournament.

Interestingly, while Messi has completed football with all titles Ronaldo can add the World Cup in case he continues to play until the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Lionel Messi will not win another Ballon d'Or this year after being left out of the nominees revealed by organisers on Wednesday, as stars of Spain's Euro 2024-winning team and Real Madrid's Champions League victors feature heavily. Messi claimed the eighth Ballon d'Or of his glittering career last year. Now aged 37, he is not among the 30 contenders this time despite winning another title with Argentina at the Copa America in July.

The former Barcelona supestar, now playing club football in MLS for Inter Miami, was also missing from the nominees in 2022 when Karim Benzema took the honours. However, he returned to win last year after leading Argentina to glory at the World Cup in Qatar.

The most prestigious individual award in football is voted for by a jury of journalists from each of the top 100 countries in FIFA's world ranking.

Brazil forward Vinicius Junior is among the favourites and is one of six members of the Madrid team that won La Liga and the Champions League last season to be nominated.

Jude Bellingham, Dani Carvajal, Toni Kroos, Antonio Ruediger and Fede Valverde are the others, while Kylian Mbappe -- who left Paris Saint-Germain for Real over the close season -- features too.

Carvajal is among the contenders from the victorious Spain team alongside Alejandro Grimaldo, Dani Olmo, Rodri, Nico Williams and Lamine Yamal.

Manchester City's Norwegian star Erling Haaland and England and Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane are on the list as well, but there is no place for five-time winner Cristiano Ronaldo, now 39. Xabi Alonso, who won the Bundesliga in an unbeaten season with Bayer Leverkusen, is among the favourites for best coach.

His rivals include Real Madrid's Carlo Ancelotti and Spain's Luis de la Fuente. Meanwhile, Aitana Bonmati of Barcelona and Spain will hope to retain the women's Ballon d'Or.

Former winners Ada Hegerberg and Alexia Putellas are also nominated, along with five members of the United States' Olympic gold medal-winning team in Sophia Smith, Mallory Swanson, Trinity Rodman, Lindsey Horan and goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher.

Captain Wataru Endo has urged Japan to use the frustration of their failed Asian Cup campaign to fire them to the 2026 World Cup, starting against China on Thursday.

Japan are the continent's highest-ranked side but the favourites flopped at the Asian Cup in Qatar at the start of the year, losing to Iran in the quarter-finals.

They also made hard work of the 2022 World Cup qualifiers, opening the third round with a shock home defeat to Oman and losing early on away to Saudi Arabia.

Japan kick off the third qualifying round for the 2026 World Cup against China in Saitama and Liverpool midfielder Endo believes they have the quality to make a strong start.

"We remember losing the opening game of the World Cup qualifiers last time and we also have the frustration from the Asian Cup," said Endo, who was linked with a move away from Anfield during the summer.

"We know it's not easy, but we don't want to concentrate too much on negative things. We want to be positive."

Japan have also been drawn with Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Indonesia and Australia in a tricky-looking Group C.

The top two are guaranteed a place at the World Cup, with the third and fourth-placed sides going into a further round of qualifying.

Japan coach Hajime Moriyasu welcomes back Brighton winger Kaoru Mitoma, who has not played for his country since the Asian Cup because of injury.

Moriyasu can also call on winger Junya Ito, who has not featured since he left the Asian Cup squad after a Japanese magazine published allegations that he sexually assaulted two women in a hotel in Osaka last year.

Japanese prosecutors dropped charges against the player earlier this month and he has denied any wrongdoing.

"Both of them are big weapons for the Japan team, no doubt about it," said Moriyasu.

"But it's not just their qualities in attack. They also defend well and work hard for the team."

China squeezed into the third qualifying round thanks to a superior head-to-head record over Thailand and have only reached the World Cup once, in 2002.

Their Croatian coach Branko Ivankovic acknowledged that Japan were one of the best teams in Asia but said "everything is possible".

"I think the most important thing is whether we can play the way we have been playing in training," he said.

"We need to have a brave heart in this game."

"We need to have a brave heart in this game." 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers: 'We remember...,' Japan captain Endo promises to erase Asian Cup frustration

Germany striker Niclas Fuellkrug said Wednesday he hoped the retirement of several experienced players could be an advantage for the new-look side.

Germany face Hungary in Duesseldorf on Saturday, having said goodbye to 2014 World Cup winners Manuel Neuer, Thomas Mueller and Toni Kroos, while captain Ilkay Gundogan has also retired since the home Euros in the summer.

Joshua Kimmich was named Germany captain on Monday and Fuellkrug, who at 31 is now one of the more experienced members of the squad despite making his debut in 2022, said his side would be hungrier.&nbsp;

"We've lost players with an incredible amount of experience and success. As Jo (Kimmich) said yesterday, we've got no more world champions in the team.&nbsp;

"Of course it's a disadvantage, but we want to turn it into an advantage. We want to be a troupe which may be inexperienced but we're hungry, greedy for success."

Fuellkrug said a team that had not won anything "wants success just a bit more than a group that has had it".

Fuellkrug singled out Mueller's absence, saying Germany was already missing one of the country's best-known characters, both on and off the pitch.&nbsp;

"When he walks into the room he has a real presence. Since he left, of course, it's been a bit quieter," Fuellkrug said smiling. "But we still miss him."

The centre-forward has 13 goals from 21 games for Germany, coming off the bench in all but six of those matches.

Fuellkrug moved from Borussia Dortmund to Premier League side West Ham United in the summer, having spent his entire career in Germany.&nbsp;

He is yet to score or assist in four games in England, three of which he came from the bench.

"I still need a bit more time to settle in," Fuellkrug said, adding that the Premier League was "more physical and dynamic, but less tactical" than the Bundesliga.&nbsp;

'Greedy for success...,' says striker Niclas Fuellkrug about new look Germany

The Indian Super League (ISL) 2024-25 Media Day began in Kolkata on Wednesday (Sep 4) with representatives from seven clubs, i.e. Mohun Bagan Super Giant, East Bengal FC, Mohammedan SC, Odisha FC, Jamshedpur FC, and NorthEast United FC, previewing the upcoming season. The event saw a blend of new and familiar faces, with Mohun Bagan's Jose Molina and Punjab FC's Panagiotis Dilmperis making their ISL debuts as head coaches, while veterans like Sergio Lobera, Khalid Jamil, Juan Pedro Benali, and Carles Cuadrat discussed their strategies for the campaign.

The discussions began with the newly-promoted Mohammedan SC coach Andrey Chernyshov expressing his pleasure at joining the ISL, with his captain Samad Ali Mallick underlining their ambitions to challenge for the playoffs straightaway.

“It’s a nice feeling to be a part of the ISL family. We did a great job last year by winning the I-League. I am thrilled about our supporters. They had been expecting this for many years. I can’t wait to get started with the league,” Chernyshov said.

<h2>Mohun Bagan, East Bengal confident for the season ahead</h2>

The two other Kolkata heavyweights are on their desired track ahead of the coming ISL campaign. Whilst the Mariners embark on the coveted title defence, East Bengal FC are bolstered by solid reinforcements to their squad in the summer.

“It’s a process to prepare the team for the ISL. We have been working together for a month and there are still a few things to improve upon. We are confident in our players and the way we have trained until now,” Jose Molina said.

East Bengal FC tactician Cuadrat overlooked comparisons from their sluggish start last year to insist confidently that his team will hit the ground running from their opening fixture this time around.

“It’s a different season with different players, and hence I wouldn’t like to compare to the last campaign, because every team is in a different situation than they were last time around. We have the complete squad with us and we will have to be competitive from day one,” Cuadrat said.

<h2>Lobera eyes ISL title with Odisha FC</h2>

Odisha FC, who finished fourth last season, are basking on their storied run across multiple competitions in 2023-24 to produce similarly impressive outings this year too.

“It’s been six years in India for me now. We had an amazing season last year, finishing at the top of the group in the AFC Cup. We were close to winning the Super Cup and we reached the ISL semi-finals for the first time in the club’s history. It was an amazing run and we want to replicate that this year to put a smile on the faces of the fans,” Lobera said.

<h2>Challengers for the playoff spots</h2>

The trio of Punjab FC, NorthEast United, and Jamshedpur FC had ignited an exciting late challenge for the playoffs last season, falling short at the final hurdle. Since then, the Highlanders have gone from strength to strength, winning the club’s first trophy with the Durand Cup last month.

“We are now starting to realise what we did in the Durand Cu. But, now, we look forward to the ISL and there’s another story that’s waiting for us in the coming season. Trophies in the past don’t make you play better. You are only as good as your last game,” Benali mentioned.

Jamshedpur FC’s Khalid Jamil praised the ISL for bringing in new rules, such as the introduction of the concussion substitute, mandating an AFC Pro License holding (or equivalent) Indian assistant coach, amongst others. Considering that he is one of the two Indian head coaches in the ISL along with Thangboi Singto of Hyderabad FC, Jamil said, “These new rules will help in the development of Indian football. We shall study it in detail and see how they could help us benefit during the course of the season as well.”

Punjab FC&nbsp;also have a new coach at the helm in Greek tactician Panagiotis Dilmperis. The team has made some smart acquisitions in the transfer window and Dimperis expressed satisfaction at the same, whereas skipper Luka Majcen stressed upon the importance of a positive start.

“I am really lucky with all the players we have got in the Punjab FC roster. They are all great personalities and our aim is to achieve greater heights than we did last year,” Dimperis said.

The second day of the Media Day will feature Mumbai City FC, FC Goa, Chennaiyin FC, Bengaluru FC, Hyderabad FC, and Kerala Blasters FC in Kochi on Thursday. The ISL 2024-25 season will kick off on Friday (Sep 13) at 7:30 pm IST.

Cristiano Ronaldo has ruled out any immediate thought of retirement from international football as he believes he still has plenty to give Portugal, he told a press conference on Monday.&nbsp;

'Feels like I'm no longer contributing...,' Portugal star Cristiano Ronaldo offers BIG update on retirement

Uruguay’s legendary forward Luis Suarez has announced his retirement from international football with the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier being his last assignment for the national side. The announcement came on Monday (Sep 2). The striker, who will retire at the age of 37&nbsp;represented Uruguay at four World Cups and helped them reach the semis in 2010 after a controversial handball against Ghana in the quarterfinal.

<h2>Suarez announces international retirement</h2>

"Friday will be my last match for my country," an emotional Suarez, 37, told a press conference.

"It was not an easy decision to make, but I do it with the peace of mind that I will give my maximum until the very last game of my (Uruguay) career," he added.

Having made his debut in 2007, Suarez represented Uruguay in 142 matches and scored 69 goals also being the top scorer for his nation. The upcoming World Cup qualifier will be his 143rd cap for the national side and his last outing in the team’s colours. The former Barcelona man has happy memories with Uruguay having led them to Copa America success in 2011.

However, Suarez will go down for two most controversial moments in the FIFA World Cup history having denied Ghana a shot at the semis in 2010 and then biting Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini in the 2014 group stage. In the 2010 quarterfinal, Ghana were on the cusp of the World Cup semis when Suarez intentionally denied them a goal with a handball on the line. The resulting penalty was hammered over the crossbar therefore taking the match into a penalty shootout where Uruguay prevailed.

For the Chiellini incident, Suarez was banned for four months from all football-related activities which saw him miss a chunk of first season at Barcelona in 2014.

Suarez’s retirement also drops curtains on an illustrious period for Uruguay with another star forward Edinson Cavani also retiring in June.

Manchester United chief executive Omar Berrada says struggling manager Erik ten Hag has the full backing of the club despite a poor start to the Premier League season. United finished eighth in the league last season -- their worst since 1990 -- but Ten Hag led his men to an unexpected FA Cup final win against Manchester City.

The Dutchman was handed a one-year contract extension in July, but only after club bosses considered alternatives. Now, Ten Hag is under pressure again, following Sunday's miserable 3-0 home defeat to Liverpool, United's second loss from three games this season, which left them 14th in the table.

Speaking alongside new sporting director Dan Ashworth shortly before kick-off against Liverpool, Berrada said it would take more than a couple of bad results to shake the club's belief in their manager. "Do we still believe in Erik? Absolutely," he said. "We think Erik is the right coach for us and we're fully backing him."

Ten Hag's contract was extended before either Berrada or Ashworth had taken up their positions but both said they were happy with the decision.

Ashworth said: "I've really enjoyed working with Erik for the last eight weeks. "I see my job is to support him in every way I possibly can and whether that's operationally, whether that's with recruitment, whether that's with medical, whether that's with psychology, whether that's training ground flow, it's just to take as much of that off him to allow him to fully focus on the training pitch and the match tactical plan to deliver success for Manchester United."

Ashworth's first few weeks in the job were dominated by the transfer window, in which United signed Matthijs De Ligt, Manuel Ugarte, Joshua Zirkzee, Leny Yoro and Noussair Mazraoui. But just as notable were the departures of players including Scott McTominay and Jadon Sancho. After a falling-out with Ten Hag early last season, Sancho returned to former club Borussia Dortmund on loan in January.

The pair appeared to have made up as Sancho took part in United's pre-season and played in the Community Shield but on deadline day he joined Chelsea on loan with an obligation to buy. Asked what had changed, Ashworth said it had been down to the player's wish to move on.

"We felt we had enough depth in that particular position to be able to cover it, we've got four really good wide players -- Jadon was a fifth -- and it just enabled us to make that decision that if it was good for him and good for us it was something we were willing to consider," he said.

"He wanted to explore the opportunity at Chelsea, like Scott wanted to explore the opportunity at Napoli, like Aaron (Wan-Bissaka) wanted to explore the opportunity at West Ham. We're not in a position where we're kicking players out of the club."

Premier League 2024/25: Erik Ten Hag has Manchester United's full backing, says CEO Omar Berrada

The saga surrounding Victor Osimhen’s future has temporarily come to an end after the Nigerian completed a loan move from Napoli on Monday (Sep 2). Osimhen had fallen out of favour at Napoli after a deteriorating relationship with board members during the summer. The striker was a subject of a transfer with Chelsea and Al-Ahli bidding for his services but the transfer did not materialise during the summer due to Napoli’s high asking price.

<h2>Osimhen arrives in Istanbul</h2>

As reported by popular football journalist, Fabrizio Romano, Osimhen arrived in Istanbul having agreed on a loan switch. Part of the agreement included lowering Osimhen’s release clause which was a major stumbling block for the majority of the teams in pursuit of the striker. He also wanted the deal to include a break clause which could see him move to other clubs in case a big offer is made. Osimhen’s release clause will be €75m with Napoli's option to extend until 202 which includes a loan move to Gala until June 2025 with salary covered.

Earlier, the striker was stripped of his No.9 jersey and was not involved in the team’s Serie A squad in an interesting development. He had a fractured relationship with board members with new manager Antonio Conte also being informed of him not being in the plans.

<h2>Osimhen’s future hangs in balance</h2>

With both Chelsea and Al-Ahli failing to land Osimhen, it will be interesting to see where the striker lands. The Nigerian will be a subject of move in the January transfer window as clubs will once again look to get his services. Chelsea will be expected to bid again while Manchester United and Arsenal also remain in the hunt for the signature.

Spanish clubs are also keeping a tab on the player but much will depend on the asking price and the availability of the player.

Osimhen had fallen out of favour at Napoli after a deteriorating relationship with board members during the summer. The striker was a subject of a transfer with Chelsea and Al-Ahli bidding for his services but the transfer did not materialise during the summer due to Napoli’s high asking price. 🟡🔴🦁 Victor Osimhen ✖️ Galatasaray fans! pic.twitter.com/VdoRN91HF4 — Fabrizio Romano (@FabrizioRomano) September 3, 2024 × Osimhen arrives in Istanbul As reported by popular football journalist, Fabrizio Romano, Osimhen arrived in Istanbul having agreed on a loan switch. Kylian Mbappe answered his critics in style as he netted his first La Liga goals to give Real Madrid a 2-0 win over Real Betis at the Santiago Bernabeu on Sunday which sends them second in the table.

Since scoring in the UEFA Super Cup against Atalanta, new signing Mbappe had failed to find the back of the net in Madrid's opening three games in La Liga, prompting criticism in the Spanish press.

Mbappe was made to wait for his goals as he squandered a series of chances, finally finding the back of the net in the 67th minute, sweeping the ball past the Betis goalkeeper with his left foot after a well-timed back-heel from Fede Valverde.

Eight minutes later the France captain added a second from the penalty spot and was cheered off the field when he was replaced by Luka Modric in the 84th minute.

The smile on Mbappe's face was in contrast to the concern that had been shown since scoring his first goal and winning his first trophy in Warsaw on August 14.

On Saturday, coach Carlo Ancelotti hit back at the criticism, insisting that his star recruit was settling in well.

"It's true that he hasn't scored but he's playing very well and has been very dangerous every time. I don't think he has any problems adapting," said Ancelotti, pointing instead to his team's lack of balance.

Madrid's 2-0 win takes them second in the table with eight points, four behind early leaders Barcelona who eviscerated Real Valladolid 7-0 on Saturday to make it four wins from four in La Liga under new coach Hansi Flick.

Atletico Madrid are third after a late victory in Bilbao on Saturday while Villarreal are fourth, both of them also on eight points.

Girona are fifth after picking up their second win of the season in Seville.

Ivan Martin put Girona ahead in the 41st minute with Abel Ruiz wrapping up a 2-0 win over Sevilla with a penalty in the 73rd minute.

Premier League: Liverpool legend Mohamed Salah hints at exit, says 'it is my last year in the club'

Manchester United had an evening to forget in the Premier League after they lost 3-0 to arch-rivals Liverpool at Old Trafford on Sunday (Sep 2). United, beaten in stoppage time by Brighton last week were condemned to a handsome win for Arne Slot’s side as the latter maintained a perfect start to the Premier League season. After the match, Erik ten Hag admitted key reasons for the defeat while also insisting he is not Harry Potter to work magic when it comes to the fitness issues of new arrival Manuel Ugarte.

<h2>Ten Hag underlines key reasons for defeat</h2>

"It will take time. It is not like I am Harry Potter,” Ten Hag said while speaking to Sky Sports. "We made mistakes and they were very clinical in finishing, they did very well. All three goals are mistakes from us - individual errors. Maybe about the last one, you can debate, 'where is our double six?' but all the others, Liverpool did brilliant. Arne took over, the turnover and the way they finished was so good.”

"Don't argue this [that the game was level apart from the goals]. It's clear Liverpool deserved it. We have to be humble, take this and improve our game."

United had a poor day at the office having conceded first-half goals through Luis Diaz with the Colombian carrying the Casemiro in his back pocket. The Brazilian was at fault for the opening goal while another mistake saw the lead doubled before the break. Things went from bad to worse for United after Mohamed Salah netted his 10th goal at Old Trafford in all competitions. This was also the seventh consecutive time he had scored at the iconic venue.

United will take on Southampton after the international break as they look to bounce back at St Mary's Stadium. The Saints are winless in all their three matches and will be an easy opponent for the Red Devils to get their mojo back.

Arne Slot passed his first major examination as Liverpool manager with a statement 3-0 win at Manchester United thanks to Luis Diaz's double and a Mohamed Salah strike on Sunday.

Slot has the unenviable task of succeeding Jurgen Klopp but has made a perfect start with a 100 per cent record from three Premier League games to sit alongside Manchester City at the top of the table.

A second consecutive defeat leaves United boss Erik ten Hag already under pressure just three games into the new season.

The Dutchman survived an internal review at the end of last season after overseeing the club's worst ever Premier League finish of eighth.

A shock FA Cup final win over Manchester City saved Ten Hag's job and offered hope for a fresh start, particularly after being backed with a £200 million ($262 million) spend in the transfer market.

But all the hallmarks of United's failings last season were exposed by the impressive visitors.

Casemiro was the fall guy for the home side, as the Brazilian was at fault for both Diaz's goals and hooked off at half-time in favour of youngster Toby Collyer.

United paraded new £42 million signing Manuel Ugarte before kick-off and must now hope the Uruguayan can have a transformational impact to shore up the midfield.

Liverpool, by contrast, did not delve into the market for a defensive midfielder, and Slot's decision to move Ryan Gravenberch into that role has proved an inspired early decision.

Despite Liverpool's ascendency over United during Klopp's reign, the German managed to win only two of his 11 away games against United.

The Reds twice failed to make the most of their dominance at Old Trafford last season as United edged a thrilling FA Cup quarter-final 4-3 and then snatched a 2-2 draw in the league that realistically ended Liverpool's title chances.

This time Liverpool were ruthless and could easily have matched their record 5-0 victory away to United in 2021.

United had been handed an early reprieve when Trent Alexander-Arnold fired in Diaz's deflected cross but the ball had struck Salah, who was in an offside position, on its way through to the right-back.

Casemiro had looked more like his old self in the opening matches of the campaign after struggling badly last season.

But the five-time Champions League winner had another afternoon that suggested his time at this level are now over.

Casemiro's slack pass was pounced on by Gravenberch who fed Salah and his dinked cross was headed in by Diaz at the back post.

Liverpool needed an important save from Alisson Becker moments later to parry Noussair Mazraoui's low powerful effort.

However, Ten Hag's men collapsed once the second goal went in three minutes before half-time.

Casemiro was caught in possession by Diaz, who then raced into the box to sweep home Salah's cross.

Salah got his customary goal against United on 56 minutes to rub salt in the home side's wounds.

The Egyptian's stunning finish from Dominik Szoboszlai's pass was his 15th goal in 16 meetings against the Red Devils, including at least one in each of his last seven appearances at Old Trafford.

Salah should have had more as he blazed over from close range with his team-mates begging for a pass.

Another brilliant Alisson save from Joshua Zirkzee then prolonged Liverpool's record of not having conceded under Slot.

Arsenal have been tipped as the side most likely to dethrone City as champions after four consecutive titles for Pep Guardiola's men.

But Liverpool could have done little more in the early weeks of the campaign to dispel any doubts that they remain contenders even without Klopp at the helm.

Former Ivory Coast defender Sol Bamba dies at 39, confirms Leeds United

Arsenal's Premier League title challenge hit its first stumbling block in a 1-1 draw with Brighton after Declan Rice was sent-off on Saturday, while Aston Villa won 2-1 away at Leicester.

Both Arsenal and Brighton had maximum points from their opening two games and the Gunners looked set for another victory when Kai Havertz pounced on a Lewis Dunk error to lob in the opening goal.

However, the game turned just seconds into the second half when Rice controversially received the first red card of his career.

The England midfielder was deemed to have kicked the ball away as Joel Veltman shaped up to take a Brighton free-kick and was shown a second yellow card.

"I was amazed, amazed, amazed!" an outraged Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta said. "Amazed because of how inconsistent decisions can be.

"In the first half, there are two incidents and nothing happens. Then, in a non-critical area, the ball hits Declan, he turns around, he doesn't see the player coming and he touches the ball."

Brighton quickly made their man advantage count as Joao Pedro swept home the rebound after David Raya denied Yankuba Minteh.

Both sides had chances to win it as Bart Verbruggen denied Havertz and Georginio Rutter headed off target late on for the visitors.

But Arsenal had to settle for a point that could see them cede early ground in the title race.

Defending champions Manchester City can go top when the visit West Ham in Saturday's 1630GMT kick-off.

<h2>Duran delivers for Villa</h2>

Villa bounced back from their defeat to Arsenal last weekend to secure their second win in three games.

Amadou Onana stretched to turn in Jacob Ramsey's cross from a well-worked free-kick to open the scoring.

Ollie Watkins is yet to find the net this season after helping England to the Euro 2024 final, but his understudy Jhon Duran has started the campaign in fine form.

The Colombian's towering header just two minutes after replacing Watkins gave Villa the breathing space they needed.

Facundo Buonanotte pulled a goal back, but the Foxes remain winless on their return to the Premier League.

Southampton have found the jump up to the top flight just as hard.

Brentford eased past the Saints 3-1 with Bryan Mbeumo scoring twice.

Everton suffered another gut punch on their final season at Goodison Park as Bournemouth came from 2-0 down after 87 minutes to win 3-2.

Two quickfire goals from Michael Keane and Dominic Calvert-Lewin early in the second half had put the Toffees in control.

But Antoine Semenyo gave Bournemouth life before Lewis Cook and Luis Sinisterra ensured Everton remain without a point this season.

Ipswich got their first Premier League point in 22 years in a 1-1 draw against Fulham.

Liam Delap put the home side in front at Portman Road but Adama Traore secured a draw for Fulham.

Honours were also even in a 1-1 draw between Nottingham Forest and Wolves.

Arsenal's Premier League title challenge hit its first stumbling block in a 1-1 draw with Brighton after Declan Rice was sent-off on Saturday, while Aston Villa won 2-1 away at Leicester.

"I was amazed, amazed, amazed!" an outraged Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta said. "Amazed because of how inconsistent decisions can be. "In the first half, there are two incidents and nothing happens. Then, in a non-critical area, the ball hits Declan, he turns around, he doesn't see the player coming and he touches the ball." Brighton quickly made their man advantage count as Joao Pedro swept home the rebound after David Raya denied Yankuba Minteh. Duran delivers for Villa Villa bounced back from their defeat to Arsenal last weekend to secure their second win in three games. Manchester United host Liverpool in the blockbuster fixture of the weekend at Old Trafford on Sunday. Premier League: Arsenal play draw with Brighton after Declan Rice red card, Aston Villa beat Leicester

Chelsea reportedly agreed a deal to sign Jadon Sancho from Manchester United as Raheem Sterling is set to exit Stamford Bridge and join Arsenal on loan after a frenzied transfer deadline day for Premier League clubs. The clubs did not confirm the deals prior to the 2200 GMT deadline, but Sancho is expected join the Blues initially on loan with an obligation to make a permanent move next season for a reported £25 million ($33 million).

United have cut their losses on the 24-year-old, who has failed to live up to his price-tag ever since a £73 million move from Borussia Dortmund in 2021. Sancho has not played a league game for United since posting on social media he had been made a "scapegoat" for poor performances just under a year ago.

But he shone during a loan spell back at Dortmund during the second half of last season, helping the German giants reach the Champions League final. Sancho's arrival adds to Chelsea's bloated squad, but one of those outcast by new boss Enzo Maresca has found a new home as Sterling moved across London to Arsenal.

The England international previously worked with Gunners' boss Mikel Arteta during their time at Manchester City. Sterling, who cost Chelsea £50 million from City just two years ago, was just one of a number of players urged to find a new club.

The 29-year-old gives Arsenal an extra attacking dimension in their bid to become champions for the first time since 2004.

Chelsea's attempts to agree a deal for Napoli striker Victor Osimhen fell through. Saudi club Al-Ahli had also been interested in the Nigerian but instead signed England international striker Ivan Toney.

Brentford have reportedly received a £40 million fee for Toney. "We thank him for so many magic moments and wish him all the best for his next chapter. Ivan leaves as a Brentford legend," said Bees manager Thomas Frank.

<h2>- Man Utd sign Ugarte -</h2>

United completed a 50 million euro (£42 million) move for Uruguayan international midfielder Manuel Ugarte from Paris Saint-Germain. "Together we will fight to win trophies and reach the level where this club needs to be," said the 23-year-old.

Ugarte becomes the Red Devils' fifth major signing of the window after Leny Yoro,&nbsp;Matthijs de Ligt, Noussair Mazraoui and Joshua Zirkzee. But Erik ten Hag said he was sad to see Scott McTominay go after the Scottish international joined Napoli.

Arsenal added goalkeeper Neto as cover for David Raya on a season-long loan from Bournemouth, after letting Aaron Ramsdale leave for Southampton in a £25 million move.

Manchester City, though, refused to delve into the market on deadline day even if Pep Guardiola admitted he is taking a risk in not replacing Argentina striker Julian Alvarez, who departed for Atletico Madrid earlier this month.

"Maybe it is a mistake, I don't know but I don't like leaving players without playing for a long time," said Guardiola on his preference for a smaller squad.

<h2>- Newcastle frustrated -</h2>

Crystal Palace were among the busiest sides on Friday despite rebuffing interest in captain Marc Guehi from Newcastle. The Eagles signed striker Eddie Nketiah from Arsenal in a deal worth up to £30 million, French defender Maxence Lacroix from Wolfsburg and a loan deal for Chelsea's Trevoh Chalobah.

Wolves bolstered their squad with the signings of Brazilian midfielder Andre from Fluminense for £21 million and England goalkeeper Sam Johnstone. Nottingham Forest brought in West Ham midfielder James Ward-Prowse on loan and Brazilian defender Morato from Benfica.

Newcastle have the financial backing of the Saudi sovereign wealth fund, but have been frustrated in their attempts to quickly challenge at the top of the Premier League by the need to meet financial sustainability rules.

The Magpies were unable to add any major signings during this window. "I don't think the dream dies, necessarily, but I think it takes a lot longer," said Newcastle manager Eddie Howe on his club's bold ambitions of becoming English champions within a decade of the Saudi takeover in 2021.
