Mason Greenwood scored twice on his Marseille debut in a 5-1 rout of Brest in Ligue 1 on Saturday, while Lille made a winning start despite a frightening head injury sustained by Angel Gomes.

Former Manchester United forward Greenwood struck inside three minutes and added another goal from the penalty spot on the half-hour after Luis Henrique had doubled the lead for Marseille.

Luis Henrique netted again after Mahdi Camara's crunching effort pulled it back to 3-1 before half-time, with Greenwood also involved in both of the Brazilian's goals.

Greenwood won a second penalty after going down under a challenge from Jordan Amavi, but it was another of Marseille's new signings Elye Wahi who tucked it away to a cap a strong display from Roberto De Zerbi's new-look side.&nbsp;

The 22-year-old Greenwood arrived last month from Old Trafford, where his career began in promising fashion before he was suspended in January 2022 following allegations of attempted rape and sexual assault.

Prosecutors dropped charges in February 2023 and he went on to spend last season in Spain at Getafe. But still, Marseille fans, including the city's left-wing mayor Benoit Payan, have condemned the signing of Greenwood.

He was one of five new faces in the Marseille line-up, joining Argentine goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli, Canada defender Derek Cornelius, Denmark midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, and Wahi who was signed from Lens on Tuesday.

Rulli, an unused member of Argentina's triumphant 2022 World Cup and this summer's Copa America squads, also had a debut to remember, saving an early spot-kick from Romain Del Castillo following his move from Ajax last weekend.&nbsp;

Former Brighton boss De Zerbi took over Marseille in June after a chaotic past season at the Velodrome, promising sweeping changes after a campaign in which the club got through three coaches and failed to qualify for Europe.&nbsp;

"I'm very happy with everything. I'm very pleased with the result and the attitude of the team," said De Zerbi.

"I don't know if we're really good and I don't know where we'll come, but people must be sure that this is a group of hard-working players, which is important."

Brest's third-place finish last term was easily the best in club history, but a number of key players have since left with others missing through injury or suspension, and it was a worrying start for the Champions League newcomers.

"We're certainly going to have to rethink things if we want to get a good result at Lens," said Brest coach Eric Roy.

"You can go down heavily as we did today... what's important is to know a bit about this team's ability to react."

<h2>'Very, very scared'</h2>

Lille regrouped after Gomes was knocked unconscious by a clash of heads, beating Reims 2-0 following a lengthy stoppage while the stricken midfielder received treatment.

The 23-year-old Gomes, a United academy graduate like Greenwood, was left motionless lying on his back after a collision with Reims midfielder Amadou Kone, who was sent off as a result of the challenge.

Players from both sides immediately called for the medical staff before the ex-England Under-21 international was eventually stretchered off and taken to hospital.

"The latest news is rather reassuring, but it's better to be careful," said Lille coach Bruno Genesio.

He admitted to feeling "very, very scared" and criticised Kone's conduct.

"There are things we shouldn't see on a pitch. There are fouls you can excuse. This one for me is not one," said Genesio.

Bafode Diakite put Lille ahead towards the end of 34 minutes of added time in the first half and Jonathan David sealed victory late on for a team that will face Slavia Prague in the Champions League play-offs.

Monaco, last season's runners-up, beat promoted Saint-Etienne 1-0 courtesy of a Takumi Minamino goal.

Paris Saint-Germain began their title defence with a 4-1 win at Le Havre on Friday in their first game since the departure of talisman Kylian Mbappe to Real Madrid.

"After a few weeks of consideration, I have come to the conclusion that it is time to end my national team career," Gündogan wrote.

"I look back with great pride on 82 international matches for my home country -- a number I could never have dreamed of when I made my debut for the senior national team in 2011.

"My highlight was definitely the huge honour of being able to lead the team as captain at our home European Championship last summer! After all these years, we finally managed to make the nation proud again -- I'm very happy that I was able to play a part in that,” the statement further read.

Ange Postecoglou admitted "wasteful" Tottenham lost their composure as Jamie Vardy's second-half equaliser gave Leicester a 1-1 draw against his profligate team on Monday.

Promoted Leicester survived a series of costly Tottenham misses either side of Pedro Porro's first-half opener for the visitors at the King Power Stadium.

Vardy made Tottenham pay for their erratic finishing with a typically predatory header, capping his surprise appearance just days after he had been ruled out by Steve Cooper after suffering a pre-season injury.

The 37-year-old has now scored nine Premier League goals in 17 appearances against Tottenham, who trudged off wondering how they had failed to demolish Leicester during their dominant first-half display.

Tottenham finished fifth in Postecoglou's first season following a campaign in which the Australian's commitment to all-out attack was eventually exposed at the cost of Champions League qualification.

Once again, Tottenham were hampered by poor finishing and unfocused defending.

Dominic Solanke was especially culpable on the striker's debut after moving from Bournemouth for a fee that could rise to £65 million ($84 million).

"Disappointing night for us. First half excellent and controlled the game but wasteful in front of goal. Once Leicester scored, the crowd lifted and we lost our composure," Postecoglou said.

"It was an issue we had last year as well. We need to keep working hard and be a bit more ruthless in front of goal. At times we made poor decisions.

"The dominance is great but if you don't score it is meaningless. We have to be stronger in our mindset in the front third. To be that wasteful is disappointing. We just weren't clinical."

Leicester are back in the Premier League after winning the Championship to end their one-year absence.

Amid reports the Foxes could face a points deductions for breaking financial rules, new boss Cooper needs to hit the ground running if they are to avoid relegation and this gritty display was an encouraging start.

"I was as fit as a fiddle until I got to about 65 minutes if I'm honest!" Vardy said.

"Tottenham are a really good team but we have them too much respect. We started getting after them and it changed the momentum.

"When we are at the top of our game we can give anyone a run for their money."

Tottenham went close to an early lead when Wilfred Ndidi cleared Rodrigo Bentancur's effort off the line before Mads Hermansen saved Brennan Johnson's fierce effort from the rebound.

Solanke's diving header was straight at Hermansen before Cristian Romero nodded Porro's cross just wide.

<h2>Sloppy Tottenham</h2>

Solanke tested Hermansen with another header and Tottenham's pressure was rewarded in the 29th minute.

James Maddison floated a pin-point cross into the Leicester area, where Porro timed his run perfectly to flick his header into the far corner from 12 yards.

Maddison almost provided another assist moments later with a superb cross that Johnson fired narrowly wide.

Solanke should have done better than shoot straight at Hermansen early in the second half, while the over-worked keeper also saved Bentancur's close-range strike.

Tottenham's wastefulness came back to haunt them in the 57th minute as Leicester struck from their first effort on target.

Unhinged far too easily, Tottenham's defenders stood statuesque as Vardy was left unmarked in the six-yard box to head in Abdul Fatawu's cross.

It was exactly the kind of sloppy goal that bedevilled Tottenham during their swoon in the closing weeks of last season.

Vardy threatened to take advantage of more disjointed Tottenham defending, surging onto Bobby Decordova-Reid's pass but failing to find the accuracy required to beat Guglielmo Vicario.

Left prone on the pitch after an awkward collision, Bentancur needed treatment for seven minutes, including being given oxygen, before he was stretchered off to be monitored for a potential concussion.

Tottenham were shaken and Vicario had to plunge to his left to claw away Boubakary Soumare's header in stoppage time before Richarlison nodded wide from close range in a fitting end to the visitors' inconsistent evening.

Premier League: Mikel Arteta's Arsenal sink Wolves in flying start to title charge

The Premier League opening weekend has already been in the headlines as top clubs in England’s top fight look to stamp their authority. While the big names are in the spotlight, Nottingham were also in the headlines on the weekend for the wrong reasons. Facing Bournemouth on the opening weekend, midfielder Danilo suffered a horrible injury which could see him get ruled out for the rest of the season having only played seven minutes on Saturday (Aug 17).

<h2>Danilo out of season?</h2>

Playing against the Cherries at the City Ground, Danilo went for an aerial challenge in the seventh minute of the season opener. The Brazilian would land awkwardly on his leg which forced him to twist it. The nasty injury saw a long break in play as the ground staff, players and the medical team rushed to the aid of the player. Stewarts were even seen surrounding the player with the wall, indicating the nasty nature of the injury.

Soon the match would resume as Nuno Espirito Santo was forced to make a substitution in the first half. Forest would soon take the lead in the match as striker Chris Wood scored in the 23rd minute of the match. They would hold on to the lead until the 93rd minute and looked on course for an opening-day win against Bournemouth before the away side clinched a point. Antoine Semenyo scored the equalising goal in the match as the contest finished 1-1.

The opening weekend also saw wins for Arsenal and Liverpool on the opening weekend as they look to challenge for the Premier League title. On Friday, Manchester United registered a win on the opening day as they beat Fulham 1-0 with new signing Joshua Zirkzee scoring the only goal of the match on his debut in the 87th minute.

Arne Slot got off to a winning Premier League start as Liverpool manager thanks to two quickfire goals from Diogo Jota and Mohamed Salah in a 2-0 win at newly-promoted Ipswich on Saturday.

Slot has the unenviable task of succeeding Jurgen Klopp at Anfield, but the Dutchman will have been heartened by a commanding second-half performance.

Ipswich were riding the crest of a wave after back-to-back promotions and a return to the Premier League for the first time in 22 years.

Celebrity fan and minority owner Ed Sheeran was in attendance at Portman Road, although the singer-songwriter had to leave at half-time to attend a gig in Serbia.

Sheeran saw the best of the Tractor Boys, who were far from overawed by their illustrious opponents early on.

Omari Hutchinson had a shot blocked inside two minutes before Jacob Greaves headed the best chance of the first half too close to Alisson Becker.

Slot is the only new face at Anfield as Liverpool are the only side in the Premier League yet to make a signing in the transfer window.

The need for some fresh faces was shown in a sloppy and slow first 45 minutes on the ball.

However, Slot's half-time team talk did the trick as the Reds were a different side after the break and could have ran out far more convincing winners.

Greaves needed to make a vital clearance to prevent Salah's effort curling in at the far corner.

But Liverpool also had a narrow escape as a potential penalty for a Virgil van Dijk push on Liam Delap was ruled out for a marginal offside in the build-up.

Luis Diaz missed a glorious chance to open the scoring when he scooped over from close range after wonderful play from Trent Alexander-Arnold and Dominik Szoboszlai to tee up the Colombian.

Alexander-Arnold's teasing cross was then headed wide by Jota with the goal gaping.

Liverpool's pressure finally told on the hour mark as another defence-splitting pass from Alexander-Arnold opened up Ipswich and Salah unselfishly squared for Jota to make amends for his earlier miss.

Five minutes later it was 2-0 as Salah pounced to score for the ninth time on the opening weekend of the season for Liverpool after a one-two with Szoboszlai.

Ipswich goalkeeper Christian Walton made a string of saves in the closing stages, notably from Salah and Conor Bradley, to prevent a more embarrassing opening day defeat.

Kieran McKenna's men had been unbeaten at home in the league for nearly 12 months.

But Ipswich were given an early lesson in the gulf in quality between the Championship and Premier League.

Things will not get any easier for Ipswich next weekend when they travel to defending champions Manchester City.

Liverpool, on the other hand, have the chance to build up some early momentum under Slot.

Either side of a trip to Manchester United next month, they face Brentford, Nottingham Forest, Bournemouth, Wolves and Crystal Palace in their next six Premier League games before the October international break.

Premier League: Liverpool manager Arne Slot off to winning start at Ipswich

Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti has hinted at mid-season breaks for players as the team braces for the upcoming La Liga season. The Real side which has been inserted with a fresh set of Galácticos in the form of Kylian Mbappe and Endrick will look to retain their European and domestic crown. According to Ancelotti, considering the players could face fatigue during the season he could give&nbsp;players&nbsp;a mid-season break.

<h2>Ancelotti hints at mid-season break</h2>

"The players need rest, they need holidays and we are thinking about giving individual holidays to the players during the season," Ancelotti told a news conference on Saturday.

"We are thinking about giving in-season breaks, giving a week off for a player so he can go and stay with his family, especially international players, who have very little rest because they usually don't get even a day's holiday in international breaks.

"We are assessing it with the medical staff and the physical preparation..." said Ancelotti as quoted by Reuters.

Real Madrid will have a long season as they compete in La Liga, Copa del Rey and the Champions League. Interestingly, this season, the Champions League will have an extended format meaning teams could play 17 matches on their way to the final. However, this won’t be the only headache for the manager as they will also compete in the extended Club World Cup format in 2025.

The added burden will see Real Madrid’s season last till the end of June 2025, which could take its toll on the players.

Madrid will be the favourites to win the Champions League and La Liga this season and have already added a trophy to their cabinet this season. Real beat Atalanta 2-0 in the UEFA Super Cup with Kylian Mbappe scoring on his debut while Federico Valverde was also on the sheet.

Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti hints at mid-season break for players after Super Cup win

Manchester United kick-started the Premier League season with a narrow 1-0 win over Fulham on Friday (Aug 16) as Joshua Zirkzee scored the only goal of the match. United, having lost the Community Shield against arch-rivals Manchester City needed a late rescue act to get the three points. After the win, Manchester United legend Gary Neville was optimistic about Manchester United’s credentials and termed it “steady and unspectacular” as they now look to build on.

"It was steady and unspectacular," he said on Sky Sports Football. "They had to win and it didn't look like they were going to for large parts of that game.

"It was critical that they won and the clean sheet was important. Defensively they will be better than they were last season and the squad looks bigger and thicker. It wasn't spectacular football but given the way they set up tonight, I didn't expect it to be.”

Manchester United faced huge backlash last season having finished eighth in the Premier League with manager Erik ten Hag on the brink of sack. However, United beat Man City in the FA Cup final in May which saw the Dutchman retain the faith of the management and stay at the job.

Premier League new boys Ipswich signed Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips on a season-long loan on Friday.

Phillips has endured a difficult time with Premier League champions City and the move to Ipswich marks the latest attempt to get his spluttering career back on track.

The 28-year-old, who spent the second half of last season on a troubled loan spell with West Ham, could make his Ipswich debut in Saturday's clash with Liverpool.

The Reds' visit to Portman Road will be Ipswich's first match in the top flight for 22 years after Kieran McKenna's side won back-to-back promotions from League One and the Championship.

"This is a day I've been waiting a number of weeks for now and I'm very happy to be here," Phillips said.

"I want to play as many games as possible, enjoy playing football again and help the team win as many games as possible in the Premier League."

Phillips has 31 England caps and represented his country at Euro 2020 and the 2022 World Cup.

But he has made only five top-flight starts since leaving Leeds to join City for a reported £45 million ($58 million) in 2022.

"Kalvin has much to offer us in terms of his qualities both on and off the ball, and he is a really humble and likeable character," McKenna said.

"He has been a key member of a newly-promoted team in the Premier League before and of course made a big impression for Leeds United during that period."

Phillips was Ipswich's second signing on Friday following the arrival of Blackburn forward Sammie Szmodics for a reported £9 million initial fee on a four-year contract.

The 28-year-old scored 33 goals in all competitions for second-tier Rovers last season and had hit three in two matches this term.

"It's every boy's dream to play in the Premier League and I've always said to my friends, family and agents that I'll get to the top one day," Szmodics said.

"There's nothing more I want than to score at Portman Road for Ipswich Town."

Premier League: Ipswich Town sign Kalvin Phillips on loan from Man City

It was a crazy night of football in the Europa League third-round qualifiers on Thursday (Aug 15) after Ajax advanced to the playoff round. The crazy win went down as a football moment of the year after a staggering 34 penalties were needed to settle the tie in the shootout win for Ajax against Greek side Panathinaikos. In the end, Ajax won the tie 13-12 and had goalkeeper Remko Pasveer to thank who made five saves in the shootout.

<h2>Ajax fail to win in normal time</h2>

Having won the first leg in Athens 1-0, Ajax needed a draw to reach the playoff round of the Europa League. They were on the brink of the next round until the 89th minute of the second leg&nbsp;as they were drawing Panathinaikos 0-0 and advancing with an aggregate score of 1-0. However, the Greek side scored an 89th minute goal which saw the score level on aggregate and take the tie to extra time.

The sides were not separated after the extra time, meaning a penalty shootout was forced to determine the winner.

<h2>Penalty shootout drama</h2>

With the tie ending on level terms, the shootout produced more drama as a crazy spell of penalties took place. Panathinaikos took the first penalty of the shootout and missed on their opening chance, meaning Ajax had the advantage to win. With the score 4-4 after nine penalties (five from Panathinaikos, four from the home side) Ajax had the opportunity to win the tie on the 10th penalty. However, Ajax’s Brian Brobbey missed the opportunity to win the tie as he missed his penalty.

The match went into sudden death, where Ajax would again miss two match-winning penalties. Interestingly, both goalkeepers also took part in the shootout and scored for their sides. After 11 penalties, the shootout sequence was repeated and needed few players to take penalties again. Interestingly, Brobbey who missed earlier in the shootout missed again adding to the frustration.

With Panathinaikos missing the 33rd penalty in the shootout, Ajax finally closed the tie with the winning penalty on the 34th attempt. Ajax’s 40-year-old goalkeeper Pasveer made five saves and scored a penalty to win the contest for his side.

Ahead of the 2024-25 Premier League opener, Manchester United manager Erik Ten Hag has shared his concerns that his team isn't 'ready' for the season-opener versus Fulham on Saturday (Aug 17). The Red Devils, who kickoff the season at Old Trafford, have a herculean task to bounce back in the new edition after failing to finish in the top-four in 2023/24. Some of their new signings have joined the squad very late whereas they are also battling injury concerns; adding to Ten Hag's concerns.

Notably, new signings Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui joined the squad on Thursday and, thus, have limited training opportunities. Meanwhile, defender Luke Shaw is&nbsp;sidelined with a calf injury,&nbsp;new recruit Leny Yoro is out for three months due to foot injury, and forward Rasmus Hojlund is battling a hamstring issue.

<h2>'WE CAN'T RUN AWAY FROM IT, HAVE TO DEAL WITH IT'</h2>

Thus, Ten Hag stated before the PL opener, "The team is not ready but the league starts. There are more managers who definitely have this problem but we have to make a start. We can’t hide from it. We can’t run away from it. We have to deal with it."

Ten Hag has a lot&nbsp;on his plate. He has to solve a selection problem at left-back, with Shaw unavailable due to a calf injury and Tyrell Malacia out of action for another two months -- being on recovery process post a knee surgery. It is believed that Mazraoui could be one answer whereas Diogo Dalot and Lisandro Martinez filled in during last Saturday's Community Shield.

The Dutchman said, "It's not about the players who are not available. It's also what I said always last season: it's about the players who are available and we have a good group, we can make a strong selection."

Ten Hag is positive about Shaw's swift return. He hasn't played for United since early this year, due to hamstring injury, although he was fit enough for England's campaign&nbsp;in Euro 2024, where they ended second.&nbsp;

In this regard, Ten Hag&nbsp;added, "He will return in the short term. It doesn't take long. Luke is a very important player for our team so we want to get him back as soon as possible but we can't force this process."

Despite a lot of criticism, Ten Hag continues as Man United manager especially following the Red Devils' FA Cup win over Manchester City in late May. He will hope to silence his critics by leading the former PL champions' comeback in the new season.

Four people have been arrested after a knife attack on the father of young Spanish football star Lamine Yamal in Catalonia, local police told AFP Thursday.

The attack took place at 1910 GMT on Wednesday in a car park in the Catalan town of Mataro, around 30 kilometres from Barcelona, in the Rocafonda neighbourhood where Lamine Yamal is from, said a spokesman for the Mossos d'Esquadra, the Catalan regional police force.

Yamal's father Mounir Nasraoui was stabbed several times the police said, and is being treated at the Can Ruti hospital, who could not be reached by AFP for comment.

"Thanks to everyone for your support, I'm already doing better, a big hug for everyone," wrote Nasraoui in a post on Instagram on Thursday afternoon.

A source close to the family told AFP that Nasraoui is now "out of danger" and "remains under observation" but in a "stable" condition.

Asked about the events and the victim's possible release date from hospital, the source did not wish to say more.

Yamal was pictured leaving the hospital in a car after visiting his father.

Three people were arrested Wednesday night and were being questioned at Mataro police station, while a fourth was taken into custody at 0900 GMT Thursday morning.

Investigators must also interview the victim "as soon as possible", as well as witnesses, to uncover the circumstances of the attack, said the police.

Spanish newspaper La Vanguardia said the incident occurred after an argument in the street with some men who had approached him while he was walking his dog and later returned to assault him.

Yamal made his Barcelona debut aged 15 in April 2023 and burst into the limelight last season, becoming a key player for the Catalan giants.

France striker Kylian&nbsp;Mbappe&nbsp;scored on his debut as Real Madrid outclassed Atalanta 2-0 to win the European Super Cup on Wednesday. Uruguayan Federico Valverde put the European champions ahead after 59 minutes from close range and&nbsp;Mbappe&nbsp;fired the ball into the top corner from Jude Bellingham's pass to double the advantage nine minutes later.

Real clinched a record sixth Super Cup crown to move ahead of Barcelona and AC Milan who have each won the annual match between the Champions League winners and Europa League champions five times. Mbappe, who joined Real in June from Paris St Germain, could have netted in the 15th minute but his first-time attempt was blocked by the Atalanta defence.

Italy's Atalanta, playing in their first Super Cup after winning the Europa League, showed no fear against their illustrious opponents. After soaking up Real's initial pressure, Gian Piero Gasperini's side grew increasingly confident and Marten de Roon's deflected shot crashed against the bar.

Atalanta continued to make chances, Ederson shooting just wide from distance before Real keeper Thibaut Courtois saved Ademola Lookman's strike. Rodrygo missed an excellent chance for Real in first-half stoppage time, sending a low pass from Vinicius Jr. against the bar.

Manchester United skipper Bruno Fernandes has opened up on the big offer he had during the close season as the side gets ready for the latest Premier League season. Fernandes, having signed a new deal at United, opened up on the move where he could have left the Red Devils. According to Fernandes, it was the club’s desperation to keep him and make him feel important that made him stay at United ahead of the latest season.

<h2>Fernandes opens up on big move</h2>

"This vote of confidence from the club was very important for me," said Fernandes.

"Even because I was approached [by other clubs], the club was aware that there was a possibility of me leaving, I had concrete offers."

"But the club showed that it needed me, that it was at a time of change, and that they wanted to do things differently."

The team on Tuesday confirmed the arrivals of Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui from Bayern Munich, after already having acquired the services of Lery Yono in defence.

The club also invested in Joshua Zirkzee in the transfer window, which now puts them in a healthy position to challenge for the Premier League title. However, the club’s primary aim will be to get back into the top four, having missed out on the Champions League football this season. The club will, however, play in the Europa League, having won the FA Cup last term.

Interestingly, the club will be managed by Erik ten Hag, who was on the brink of sack after having endured a tough 2023-24 season. &nbsp;

Fernandes opens up on big move "This vote of confidence from the club was very important for me," said Fernandes. "Even because I was approached [by other clubs], the club was aware that there was a possibility of me leaving, I had concrete offers." "But the club showed that it needed me, that it was at a time of change, and that they wanted to do things differently." "As soon as I heard that Manchester United wanted me, I felt an excitement about the opportunity of a new challenge at such a historic club,” De Ligt said in his first interview.

"In the conversations that followed, I was impressed by the vision that the football leadership set out and the role they saw for me in it.”

The latest signings see United add three senior defenders so far into the first team having already signed Lery Yono from Lille. The duo of De Ligt and Mazraoui had been on the team’s radar for a while with speculations linking them since the last season.

On the other hand, Dutch defender De Ligt has become the most expensive defender in the history of football having now acquired a combined transfer fee of more than $200 million. Having started his career with Ajax under then-manager Ten Hag, De Ligt moved to Juventus for a fee of $85 million in 2019. In 2022 he would switch to Bayern from Juventus for a fee of $70 million while his latest move sees him smash the record combined transfer fee ever paid for a defender.

Rangers exited the Champions League after losing 2-0 to Dynamo Kyiv in the second leg of the third qualifying round on Tuesday, while Jose Mourinho's Fenerbahce were knocked out by Lille.

Rangers coach Philippe Clement blasted the referee's decision that left his team with 10 men.

"It's hard for my team. They don't deserve this after these two games versus Dynamo Kyiv. One person with one decision made a really big change for us," Clement told BBC Scotland.

"It's the second time in my career of over 30 years that something unjust has happened. We can only accept it and move forward towards the league and the Europa League."

Clement, who is looking to overhaul his squad in an attempt to challenge Celtic, said the defeat would have serious ramifications for the club's finances.

"Financially, it's a big difference for the club. It will make a difference for the transfers coming in also. I don't expect this rebuild to be done in a few weeks' time."

Ukrainians Dynamo advanced 3-1 on aggregate and head into a play-off tie against Salzburg, who edged FC Twente 5-4 after a 3-3 draw in the return leg in the Netherlands.\

Columbus Crew oust Messi-less defending champ Inter Miami in Leagues Cup

Kylian Mbappe is set to finally make his debut for Real Madrid when the European champions take on Europa League winners Atalanta in the UEFA Super Cup in Warsaw later on Wednesday. After years of trying to secure the services of Mbappe, the Spanish giants got their man when he signed a five-year deal at the Santiago Bernabeu in June as a free agent after ending his association with Paris Saint-Germain.

The France captain will now be thrown in at the deep end in his new club's first official game of the campaign, which offers him the chance to win his first European trophy. Mbappe helped France reach the semi-finals of Euro 2024 although he endured a difficult tournament in Germany, breaking his nose in his country's opening game and only scoring one goal, from a penalty.

The 25-year-old was then unveiled before 80,000 fans at the Bernabeu before being afforded a holiday, meaning he played no part in Real's pre-season tour of the United States. Therefore, Mbappe's debut in the Polish capital will come just a week after he completes his first training session with Carlo Ancelotti's squad.

"Kylian can play from the start just like everyone who is here," Ancelotti said in Warsaw on the eve of the game. "He is adapting really well, he is focused and he is showing extraordinary quality."

Media back in Spain are licking their lips at the prospect of seeing Mbappe in action for Real at long last.

Ancelotti, meanwhile, laughed off suggestions that fitting Mbappe into a side that won the Champions League last season could somehow be a problem. "I have been thinking about this all summer. Who to play and who not to play. It has ruined my holidays," joked the Italian.

Real already had Vinicius Junior, Jude Bellingham and Rodrygo in attack, while Mbappe is not the only new recruit, with Brazilian prodigy Endrick also having arrived from Palmeiras.

Toni Kroos and Nacho have departed since Madrid were crowned European champions for the 15th time at the start of June, while Eduardo Camavinga is out of Wednesday's game after injuring a knee in training.

Atalanta are contesting the Super Cup for the first time after winning last season's Europa League, their first piece of European silverware. The Italian club are without striker Gianluca Scamacca, who tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee at the start of the month.

However, they have signed another Italian international striker in Mateo Retegui, who has joined from Genoa. Last season's Super Cup was won by Manchester City, who beat Sevilla on penalties.

However, they have signed another Italian international striker in Mateo Retegui, who has joined from Genoa. Last season's Super Cup was won by Manchester City, who beat Sevilla on penalties. Frenchman Kylian Mbappe set for long-awaited Real Madrid debut in UEFA Super Cup vs Atalanta

Premier League chief executive Richard Masters admits the legal cases facing Manchester City and other top-flight teams have created "uncertainty and frustration" ahead of the new season.

An independent commission is set to rule on the 115 charges against Premier League champions City for alleged financial breaches during the season.

There are also cases to be resolved involving Leicester and Everton, related to alleged breaches of the league's profitability and sustainability rules (PSR).

Asked if the unresolved financial issues would cast a shadow over the 2024/25 season, Masters told Sky Sports: "It does matter, and I understand it creates uncertainty and some frustration but there is no happy alternative to enforcing the rules, which everyone has agreed at the beginning of each season.

"They have looked each other in the eye and shaken each other's hand and said 'we will abide by these rules'. So the Premier League has to enforce rules.

"Whatever difficulty or frustration that creates is part of maintaining and protecting the Premier League's competition, its core values, competitive competition. And that's really my role, and that's what I want to continue doing."

City, who are bidding for an unprecedented fifth successive Premier League title, have won the top-flight crown twice since the charges, which they vehemently deny, were laid in February last year.

Reports have suggested the hearing into City's case could start in September, but Masters refused to be drawn on a timescale.

"I think it does need to be resolved," he said. "It's not in our hands. It's in the hands of an independent panel.&nbsp;

"They are in charge of the timing and the running of the process, and we must let them get on with it."

City's alleged breaches relate to rules requiring the reporting of accurate financial information and the submission of details of manager and player pay information within the relevant contracts.

They also refer to a club's responsibility as a Premier League member to adhere to UEFA's financial regulations and to the league's own profitability and sustainability regulations.

City are alleged to have breached rules requiring them to co-operate and assist with the Premier League's investigation into those breaches, which the league said began in December 2018.

Everton and Nottingham Forest were docked points for PSR breaches last season, and those rules remain in force for the campaign ahead, requiring clubs to limit losses to a maximum of £105 million ($134 million) over three seasons.

"I can't speculate on (whether there will be charges related to the 2023-24 PSR assessment period)," Masters said.

"You can only really adjudicate on it when you have audited accounts and that process doesn't start until towards the end of the year."
