Those hopes were revived early in the second half after Bolivia equalised to make it 1-1, leaving the US on course for qualification provided they continued to hold Uruguay.

Yet the US optimism was punctured just moments later when Uruguay took the lead in controversial circumstances through Mathias Olivera on 66 minutes.

Ronald Araujo's powerful header from Nicolas de la Cruz's free-kick was parried away by US goalkeeper Matt Turner, but only into the path of Olivera, who tucked away the rebound.

Replays appeared to show that Olivera was offside when Araujo first made contact with the ball, but despite a lengthy VAR review, Peruvian referee Kevin Ortega ruled that the goal should stand.&nbsp;

Post match, Belgium players were not very happy as they squeezed their way into the last 16 after a disappointing group stage campaign where they picked up only four points. Despite the issue in the team camp, Belgium booked their place in the R16 having finished second with four points. "If it happens I will try to have a response. I am responsible for this match, but we are still in the next stage and have to play much better. If we fail, you can ask me this question [about my future] again," the former Barcelona coach added.

The coach was very critical of his side which lost the game despite equalising it twice.

"I can list quite a few mistakes. We started very badly. We did not defend well. We were not aggressive, there was a lack of pressure and we lost the ball as well, particularly at the start so it was very bad.

"The players ran a lot, but not in the positions so it was awful, very bad. We did not control the match. The match against France was reasonable as a team, but today it was appalling,"&nbsp;said the Netherland's coach.

Koeman, however, remained confident of putting up a better performance in the next stage and said: "It is possible with this squad. They have the qualities"

As for the match, the Netherlands conceded an own goal in the sixth minute before coming equal in the 47th minute. Austria gained the lead again with a goal in the 59th minute before the Dutch again equalized it in the 75th minute.
