West Ham signed Manchester United defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka in a deal worth a reported £15 million ($19 million) on Tuesday. Wan-Bissaka agreed a seven-year contract with the Hammers after spending five years at Old Trafford. The 26-year-old right-back made 190 appearances for United following his 2019 move from Crystal Palace.

He appeared in United's surprise FA Cup final win against Manchester City last season, but was not in United manager Erik ten Hag's plans for the new season. "It's an amazing feeling to be back in London and I'm excited for what's coming," Wan-Bissaka said. "I was born here and I know the ins and outs of London, which plays a big part in my life, so to be back playing in this city means a lot to me."

United are expected to sign Bayern Munich right-back Noussair Mazraoui to replace Wan-Bissaka. Wan-Bissaka is West Ham's eighth close-season signing after their swoops for Jean-Clair Todibo, Crysencio Summerville, Luis Guilherme, Niclas Fullkrug, Wes Foderingham, Max Kilman and Guido Rodriguez.

Hammers technical director Tim Steidten said Wan-Bissaka's Premier League experience would be valuable for the club's new boss Julen Lopetegui. He could make his debut for West Ham in their opening Premier League game against Aston Villa on August 17.

"He's exactly the type of player we're looking to attract to this club while in the prime years of his career," Steidten said. "He's an incredibly talented defender who we rate very highly and who is superb in one-on-one situations. He's versatile too, which is clearly another positive. "He's played over 170 Premier League games during his career so he knows the division inside-out."

Premier League champions Manchester City are set to learn their fate in the 115 alleged financial regulations breach in early 2025 as the independent commission is likely to start the hearing in September. According to reports on Monday (Aug 12), Man City could learn their fate as early as the first week of January 2025 having been accused of breaching the financial regulations on multiple occasions. With the verdict set to be delivered in January, Man City could face a possible ban or points deduction in the future.

Man City set to learn fate in 2025

According to The Times, a hearing for the alleged breaches was likely to start in November; however, it is now being brought forward to mid-September. It is also reported that the hearing from the independent commission will last for 10 weeks, meaning that the verdict could be out by the first week of January, subject to delays. It is hoped that the verdict could be a setback for Man City who recently won their record-breaking fourth consecutive Premier League title.

Man City are reported to have breached multiple Premier League regulations between 2009 and 2023 during their golden period. The club would win the Premier League title on eight occasions while winning the Champions League in 2023. The club has been accused of spending a big amount of money in the transfer market despite suffering losses at times.

Man City banned in the past

The club had faced a similar charge in 2020 when UEFA banned Manchester City from European competitions for two seasons. However, that ban was lifted after the Dubai-owned club challenged the matter at the Court of Arbitration for Sports later in the year.

The Times report added that the outcome of a separate legal case that City have brought against league rules that regulate how clubs strike sponsorship or revenue deals with businesses linked to their owners is now due in the next fortnight.

If found guilty of the charges, Manchester City could face a points deduction or even relegation from the top flight, meaning they won’t be able to compete in Europe.

Arsenal will be without defender Takehiro Tomiyasu for the start of their Premier League campaign as the Japan international will be out for weeks with a knee injury, manager Mikel Arteta said on Sunday. Tomiyasu, 25, was left out of Arsenal's pre-season tour in the U.S. due to the injury, and was also absent from Sunday's 2-0 win over Lyon in London.

"I think it will take weeks on that one unfortunately," Arteta told reporters of Tomiyasu's injury. "He's going to have to be patient and work through it because I think it's going to take a few weeks."

Manchester City avenged their FA Cup final defeat to Manchester United to lift the Community Shield 7-6 on penalties on Saturday, after a 1-1 draw at Wembley.

The game exploded into life in the final 10 minutes as Alejandro Garnacho gave United the lead before Bernardo Silva levelled in the 89th minute.

Pep Guardiola's men then edged a marathon shoot-out as Jadon Sancho and Jonny Evans failed to score for United.

City have won the Premier League for a record four consecutive seasons but it is the first time in that run that they have won the season opener after defeats to Leicester, Liverpool and Arsenal in the past three years.

The English champions were severely hampered by the absence of a series of key players due to their late return to pre-season after competing at Euro 2024 and the Copa America.

City's England trio of Kyle Walker, John Stones and Phil Foden, as well as Spain midfielder Rodri are yet to return to training following their efforts in reaching the final of Euro 2024.

By contrast, United boss Erik ten Hag showed his desperation to win more silverware by thrusting teenager Kobbie Mainoo straight back into the heart of the action after his starring role for England in Germany.

Despite also leaving Kevin De Bruyne and Silva on the bench, City controlled the game early on with the electric Jeremy Doku causing havoc down the left.

James McAtee could be handed his chance to shine this season by Pep Guardiola with Julian Alvarez set to join Atletico Madrid.

And McAtee, who spent last season on loan at Sheffield United, was inches away from making his mark with a curling effort that came back off the post midway through the first half.

United rue missed chances

Ten Hag's job is widely believed to have been saved by beating City back in May and he will feel his side should have got the better of their rivals once more.

United were being starved of possession but still managed to create the better of the chances.

Amad Diallo should have gone for goal himself rather than trying to square to Bruno Fernandes with the goal gaping as half-time approached.

Fernandes started in an unfamiliar centre-forward role due to the absence of Rasmus Hojlund through injury and a lack of match fitness for Joshua Zirkzee.

The United captain thought he had opened the scoring with a stunning strike on the hour mark that was ruled out for offside.

Garnacho was introduced for the final half-hour and brought more pace and invention to the United attack.

The Argentine teed up Marcus Rashford, who could only hit the post with just Ederson to beat.

Garnacho thought he had won the game on 82 minutes as he jinked inside the City defence and fired low into the corner.

However, City rallied and levelled in the final minute of the 90 when Oscar Bobb's cross was headed in by Silva.

The Portuguese midfielder was then the first to miss in the shoot-out as his effort was saved by Andre Onana.

Sancho, though, experienced more penalty woe at Wembley after missing in the final of Euro 2020 for England.

His spot-kick was brilliantly saved by Ederson, who then fired in himself to keep City alive.

Evans gave City the chance to win it when he blazed over.

And it was a tale of redemption for Manuel Akanji, whose saved penalty cost Switzerland in their Euros quarter-final against England, as the centre-back stroked home the winner.

Manchester City edge rivals United on penalties to win Community Shield

Lee Carsley will step up from his role as England under-21 manager to take temporary charge of the Three Lions, the English Football Association (FA) announced on Friday.

Gareth Southgate stepped down as England boss after eight years in charge in the aftermath of losing the Euro 2024 final to Spain last month.

Carsley could now follow Southgate's path by graduating from the under-21 setup into the senior role.

The 50-year-old will oversee Nations League fixtures against the Republic of Ireland and Finland in September and could remain in the role for longer depending on how quickly the FA finalise their search for Southgate's successor.

"Carsley will step up from his role in charge of the MU21s (men's under-21s) initially for September’s fixtures away to Republic of Ireland and at home to Finland, but with a view to remaining in the position throughout autumn while the FA’s recruitment process for a new permanent head coach continues," the FA said in a statement.

Carsley won 40 caps for the Republic of Ireland as a player and made over 300 Premier League appearances with Blackburn, Coventry, Everton and Birmingham.

In 2023 he led England to a first win at the under-21 Euros since 1984 and is familiar with a number of the current senior squad due to various coaching roles across the FA's development teams.

However, he lacks senior managerial experience apart from short caretaker spells at Brentford and Birmingham.

"It’s an honour to step up and lead this England squad on an interim basis," said Carsley.

"As I am very familiar with the players and the cycle of international football, it makes sense for me to guide the team while the FA continues the process to recruit a new manager.

England will also face Greece in the second tier of the Nations League after being relegated from the last version of the competition in 2022.

Former Chelsea boss Graham Potter and Newcastle manager Eddie Howe are among the other names linked with the job.

Jurgen Klopp has dismissed any notion he could return to England so swiftly after leaving Liverpool, while Pep Guardiola on Friday refused to entertain speculation he could take over when his contract at Manchester City expires at the end of the season.

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca said financial sustainability rules must be changed to discourage clubs from cashing in on academy graduates as Conor Gallagher looks set to join Atletico Madrid. The England international would join Mason Mount, Lewis Hall, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Ian Maatsen and Callum Hudson-Odoi as products of the Chelsea youth system to be sold over the past two years, while Armando Broja and Trevoh Chalobah are also expected to leave before the end of August.

Chelsea have needed to recoup funds after splashing well over £1 billion ($1.3 billion) in the past four transfer windows to revamp the squad under new ownership led by LA Dodgers co-owner Todd Boehly and private equity firm Clearlake Capital. The sale of players who came through the academy is particularly helpful for clubs to comply with financial regulations as the full transfer fee is recorded as a profit in the books.

Profit and sustainability rules that limit Premier League clubs to losses of £105 million ($134 million) across a three-year assessment period have been blamed for a slow summer transfer window so far.

Last season Everton and Nottingham Forest were docked points for breaching the regulations, while newly-promoted Leicester could face one this season for breaches in the 2022/23 campaign.

"This is not Chelsea's problem, these are the rules. All the clubs at this moment are compelled to sell players from the academy because of the rules. It's all of the Premier League clubs' problems," said Maresca, who joined Chelsea from Leicester in June. "It's a shame because in Italy, we have (Francesco) Totti with Roma, 20 years with the same club - one club man. We love that in football, the fans want to see that. But with the rules now it is different from the past."

On whether the rules need to be changed, Maresca added: "If they want to protect academy players, then probably yes." Gallagher was Chelsea's captain for much of last season due to Reece James' injury troubles.

Despite fan unrest at his potential departure, the 24-year-old Gallagher appears headed for Spain to join Atletico in a £33 million deal. Gallagher had just one year left on his contract at Stamford Bridge and reportedly rejected the offer of a two-year extension.

"In this moment, there is something between the club and the player - an agreement to stay or to leave," said Maresca. "These kinds of things happen in every club, every summer and in the end the final decision will be good for everyone. "Hopefully the final decision will be good for Conor and the club."

'I would love to stay': Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola hints at contract extension amid exit talks

Manchester United are all set to put behind the disappointment from the 2023-24 season as they prepare for fresh challenges ahead of the latest season. United, having finished eighth in the Premier League, were on the brink of their worst finish to a season in nearly three decades before winning the FA Cup title. During much of the business end of the season, speculations surrounded the future of manager Erik ten Hag, who was likely to be sacked before the management decided to stick with the Dutchman.

Now, with a fresh set of challenges former United captain and defender Harry Maguire has admitted that speculations surrounding the manager's future were the key reason why the Red Devils lost form. Ten Hag’s team finished with 60 points and with a negative goal difference, but their FA Cup win over arch-rivals Man City saw them end with silverware.

Harry Maguire admits key reason for United’s downfall

"It probably did damage our performances and results throughout the season maybe a little bit. Especially when it happened around that Christmas period when we really did fall off. But credit to the manager for the way that he handled it,” Maguire said as United began their US tour.

With Ten Hag still in charge of the side, the Red Devils are set to reignite their hunger for glory having now gone more than 11 years without a Premier League title. The win in the FA Cup final also saw them qualify for the Europa League which will see them have European football on the calendar.

United are active in the transfer market and have so far signed Leny Yoro and Joshua Zirkzee as they try to strengthen their side ahead of the new season. While a Premier League title charge is out of reach, the Ten Hag and Co will be expected to finish in the top four which will be the foundation to return to Champions League.

Ten Hag, who was all set to lose his job, saved himself after United won the FA Cup, beating rivals Manchester City in the final. The Red Devils have already signed two new players – Leny Yoro and Joshua Zirkzee – to replace now departed Raphaël Varane and Anthony Martial.

"We need the squad to be as strong as possible," Ten Hag said at a news conference at UCLA on Friday (Jul 26).

"We already had a very good two buys, so when everyone is fit we have a team who can beat everyone, but with the squad depth we have to catch up because we had injuries, we are vulnerable.

"We have to avoid this by getting less injuries and second, our squad has to be that good. The quality we have in depth we have to catch up, but even more because this season will be the survival of the fittest."

On being asked where he is looking for reinforcements, Ten Hag said: "We are looking in all of the positions to reinforce and we are looking for a plan in our squad to reassure ourselves we are always occupied."

"We work continually and the good thing is we already signed two players and it belongs to a club like Man United that you are looking for opportunities that are better and we still have time until [the deadline on] Aug. 30.

"The load and pressure on players is immense, with the new model in Europe. I just mentioned it, it's survival of the fittest," he added.

The new PL season starts on August 16 with Manchester United taking on Fulham on match day 1 of 38.

The countdown for the 2024-25 Premier League season is in the final stage as less than one month remains before the start of the latest campaign. Defending champion Manchester City will be poised to add one more title to their cabinet while arch-rivals United will be hoping to bounce back. While Pep Guardiola remains the mastermind of City’s rise, Bruno Fernandes like his counterpart has admitted that transfer mistakes have cost the Red Devils from rising.

Fernandes agrees with Guardiola

One of the transfers that has made the headlines is Fernandes’ international teammate and current Man City player Matheus Nunes. The Portuguese international who won the Premier League with Man City last season is reckoned by both Fernandes and Guardiola as a key transfer mistake made by Manchester United. According to Fernandes, his side missed out on the transfer which could have helped them revive their midfield.

Going back to Nunes’ first transfer to England with Wolves, Fernandes stated that he should have joined United rather than Wolves. The midfielder would later transfer to Man City where he has been a key player but is yet to cement his place in the side.

Fernandes told Portuguese media outlet Record, “I've already talked to him. I've already told him that he should have come here (to United) and not there (to Wolves). I'm very happy for him.

“He's going to experience the best league in the world, he's going to have players beside him with a lot of quality, like Ruben (Sa) and Joao (Moutinho), who will teach him a lot. They are two experienced players.

Nunes featured in just 17 of City’s Premier League title-winning season, making another 11 appearances in all competitions. He will be eager to make a bigger impact in his second campaign at the Etihad ahead of the 2024/25 season.

Manchester City will be hoping to repeat the 2022-23 season where they won the treble of the Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup.

Argentina star Lionel Messi and Inter Miami teammate Luis Suarez will miss Wednesday's Major League Soccer All-Star Game with injuries, the league and team announced Monday.

An updated MLS roster for the match-up against Mexico's Liga MX All-Stars at Columbus, Ohio, listed Messi and Uruguayan striker Suarez among those who would not play.

Inter Miami detailed the injuries, with Messi still sidelined after missing two MLS matches last week with a right ankle injury suffered in Argentina's Copa America final triumph over Colombia.

"Messi will miss the All-Star Game due to an ankle injury while Luis Suarez, who recently returned from international duty after over 40 days away from the club, will miss the All-Star Game due to knee discomfort," Inter Miami said.

It would have been the first MLS All-Star appearance for 37-year-old Messi, who joined Inter Miami last July.

Eight-time Ballon d'Or winner Messi, who helped spark Argentina to the 2022 World Cup title, led Miami to last year's inaugural Leagues Cup crown in a tournament of MLS and Mexican league squads.

But Miami said Messi's status and that of Suarez remain in doubt for Saturday's home match against Mexico's Puebla, Inter's first step in defending the Leagues Cup title.

Indian football has seen rapid growth in the last decade with the rise of national football leagues like the Indian Super League (ISL) and the I-League. While the focus is entirely on the higher level of football, the backbone of that success has always been academy football. South United Football Club (commonly known as SUFC) from Bengaluru has emerged as a prominent club among the network of football sides with the best academies in India.

The club, which is built with a long-term vision is being regarded as one of the best in the country. In an exclusive conversation with WION, Director Sharan Parikh shed light on how the club operates and how it overcame challenges to set up one of India’s most profitable football academies.

“The power of sports in India has been tremendous, and when it comes to football, we have been blessed with some of the best communities in the country. I think if Indian football is to progress, we need a good programme at grassroots level and with the growing business side of things, especially since I took over SUFC, things have changed a lot. If we build more such academies in India, surely Indian football will be on the rise in the coming years,” said Sharan Parikh while speaking on the academy structure in India.

When asked about the set of challenges, he opened up about the public response and the future plans, the director opened up on how the club functions.

“Building state-of-the-art infrastructure was certainly a challenge. While we have succeeded in building world-class infrastructure, it was a long process. The global football industry faces a major challenge in establishing a consistent revenue stream. Especially in India, football is still a growing industry. Despite being over 100 years old, it has not yet achieved business maturity. However, it is growing, and that’s encouraging for everyone involved,” Parikh said on the challenges of building the academy.

“When entering smaller cities, we cannot underestimate people's love for football and their passion and desire to encourage children to participate in physical, healthy, and group activities. We are confident and not fearful of entering smaller cities because we know about football's strong impact in bringing communities together. The experience of our staff in Solapur has been very encouraging, and although it's just the beginning, we are optimistic about our partnership with the Solapur community,” the club Director said on the expansion in Maharashtra’s Solapur.

Future plans

“We plan for the long term, and make sure that every step we take is solid. We aim to build ourselves as a case study, learning from our mistakes to help others avoid them. As far as ISL and footballing ladder are concerned, we focus on youth development rather than acquiring ready-made players. This approach supports our goal of creating a sustainable family business. As our youth players develop, our first team will improve, advancing up the football ladder on merit. We are happy to progress one step at a time,” Parikh added.

Currently, as a football training academy in Bengaluru, SUFC’s dedication extends beyond its training programmes. The academy actively participates in community outreach and development initiatives. These efforts have ensured that football reaches every corner of society, irrespective of socio-economic background. SUFC conducts camps, clinics, and workshops across various cities, aiming to reach out to budding talent who might not have access to formal training otherwise.

Just hours after announcing the new head coach of the Indian men’s football team, the All India Football Federation (AIFF) has landed in controversy as technical committee member Bhaichung Bhutia resigned on Saturday (July 20). Bhutia, a former India captain was co-opted into the committee after losing the presidential elections to Kalyan Chaubey in 2022. According to him, the technical committee was bypassed while selecting Manolo Marquez as the new head coach.

Controversy erupts as Bhaichung Bhutia resigns

"I have been chairman of the AIFF technical committee in the past (2013 to 2017) and involved in coach appointments like in the case of Stephen Constantine. It is the job of the technical committee to shortlist the candidates who have applied and recommend a suitable person to become a coach. But this time, there was not even a single technical committee meeting to appoint a successor to Stimac," Bhutia told PTI.

The legendary player was displeased with how he and other members of the technical committee were ignored in the new coach selection. According to him, the technical committee, of which he was once head, shortlists the names for the selection while the AIFF carries the interviews. However, they were not involved in any decision-making process.

FIFA is investigating a video circulating on social media that showed members of the Argentina national team singing about France's players in a way that the French Football Federation (FFF) said was "racist and discriminatory".

The FFF said on Monday that it would file a complaint to the global soccer governing body over the video, in which Argentina players sing about France striker Kylian Mbappe's African descent. The video was posted by Argentina forward Enzo Fernandez on Instagram amid the team's celebrations following a 1-0 victory over Colombia to win the Copa America.

"FIFA is aware of a video circulating on social media and the incident is being looked into," a FIFA spokesperson said in a statement. "FIFA strongly condemns any form of discrimination by anyone including players, fans and officials."

Fernandez later apologised on social media, saying he had gotten "caught up in the euphoria of our celebrations." "The song included highly offensive language and there is absolutely no excuse for these words," he wrote.

Fernandez's Chelsea club team mate Wesley Fofana earlier described the video as "uninhibited racism". However, Argentina's Vice President Victoria Villarruel defended Fernandez and the team, saying she would not tolerate the actions of a "colonialist" country.

"No colonialist country is going to intimidate us for a song on the pitch or for telling the truths they don't want to admit," Villarruel posted on her account on X.

"Argentina is a sovereign and free country. We never had colonies or second-class citizens. We have never imposed our way of life on anyone.

"But neither will we tolerate that they do it to us.... Enzo I support you, (Lionel) Messi, thanks for everything! Argentinians always hold your head up high."

Chelsea said in a statement on Wednesday all forms of discriminatory behaviour were completely unacceptable. "We are proud to be a diverse, inclusive club where people from all cultures, communities and identities feel welcome," the English Premier League club said.

Mbappe and other players of African descent on the France team were racially abused on social media after losing to Argentina in the 2022 World Cup final, prompting a senior French cabinet minister to call on FIFA to investigate.

Days after Spain triumphed in the Euro 2024 final, the country's football federation (RFEF) suffered a new scandal as its president Pedro Rocha was handed a two-year suspension, according to media reports on Tuesday.

Spanish media outlets Onda Cero and Iusport reported Spain's Administrative Tribunal of Sport (TAD) suspended Rocha due to his making of decisions outside of his power, such as his dismissal of the federation's general secretary Andreu Camps.

Rocha was appointed RFEF president in April, taking the place of disgraced former chief Luis Rubiales, who was forced to step down in September 2023 after forcibly kissing player Jenni Hermoso during the medal ceremony after Spain won the Women's World Cup.

Both Rocha and Rubiales are also under investigation as part of a corruption case involving the federation during the latter's presidency.

According to a copy of the decision, posted on X by an Onda Cero journalist, the tribunal has banned Rocha from "holding a post in any sporting federation" during his two-year suspension.

Iusport reported Rocha will appeal the decision and request to remain in post until his appeal is handled, which would allow him to run for re-election in autumn.
