Romelu Lukaku starred again for Napoli by scoring once and setting up two more goals in Friday's 3-1 win over Como which ensured top spot in Serie A for at least another week.

Belgium striker Lukaku laid on Scott McTominay for his first goal in Italy's top flight after just 25 seconds, before netting from the spot seven minutes after half-time and rolling in David Neres as Napoli extended their league lead to four points.

Closest rivals Juventus can pull back to within a point of Napoli with a home win over Cagliari on Sunday.

Lukaku has settled in immediately in Naples under Antonio Conte, scoring three times in five league appearances in which he has also made four assists for a team which looks ready to challenge for the league title.

"We're getting there. It's going to take time because I got here late. It's all thanks to my teammates, the coaching staff and fans that we're doing so well," said Lukaku to Sky.

Napoli didn't have it all their own way at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona as they were pushed hard by promoted Como.

Cesc Fabregas' team were deservedly level at the break thanks to a stunning long-range strike from Gabriel Strefezza, which came shortly after Nico Paz thumped a shot off the woodwork.

And the match was firmly in the balance until Neres rolled home his second Napoli goal in the 86th minute after being brilliantly slipped through by Lukaku.

Lukaku looks lighter on his feet than he has at any point since winning Serie A with Inter Milan in 2021 and he also supplied a neat pass from which Scotland's McTominay lashed in his second Napoli goal after also netting against Palermo in the Italian Cup last month.

McTominay has been excellent since signing for Napoli from Manchester United in the summer, adding a new dimension to the midfield for southern Italy's biggest club.

"It was great to get off to a good start. It was a great ball. Obviously for me it's nice to get a goal and then we lost a little bit of control in the first half and then we tweaked a through things at half-time and it made a difference," said McTominay to Sky.&nbsp;

Napoli are unbeaten since being humiliated at Verona -- who beat Venezia 2-1 in Friday's late match -- on the opening day of the season.

And under Conte Napoli look much more like the team which swept to their third Scudetto in 2023 than the disastrous outfit which last season failed to even qualify for European football as reigning champions.

"We just want to take it game by game. We want to play football and hopefully win as many games as we can," added McTominay.

"The boys have been great with helping me bed in. Game by game, no-one's looking any further past the next game."

Como, backed by Indonesian tobacco giants Djarum, sit 10th on eight points after an encouraging start to their first Serie A season in 21 years.

Serie A: Lukaku stars against Como as Napoli secure top spot for another week

French international footballer Paul Pogba said Friday his "nightmare is over" after a four-year ban for doping was reduced to 18 months.

Pogba, who is under contract with Italian giants Juventus until 2026,&nbsp;will be able to return to competitive football from March 11 next year, four days before his 32nd birthday.

"Finally the nightmare is over. I can look forward to the day when I can follow my dreams again," the player said in a statement released to Britain's Press Association.

"I always stated that I never knowingly breached World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) regulations when I took a nutritional supplement prescribed to me by a doctor, which does not affect or enhance the performance of male athletes.

"I play with integrity and, although I must accept that this is a strict liability offence, I want to place on record my thanks to the Court of Arbitration for Sport's judges who heard my explanation.

"This has been a hugely distressing period in my life because everything I have worked so hard for has been put on hold."

Earlier Friday, a spokesperson for the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) confirmed that Pogba's suspension had been slashed.

"I can confirm the decision: an 18-month suspension with effect from 11 September 2023. The reasons for the decision will follow later," the CAS spokesperson told AFP.&nbsp;

Pogba tested positive for testosterone in August 2023 after a match between Juventus and Udinese in Italy.&nbsp;

He was provisionally suspended in September of the same year, and then banned for four years by the Italian National Anti-Doping Tribunal the following February.

Pogba's representatives said the testosterone came from a food supplement prescribed by a doctor he consulted in the United States.

After the ban was announced, Pogba posted on his Instagram account that he had "never knowingly or deliberately" taken doping products.

"I am sad, shocked and heartbroken that everything I have built in my professional playing career has been taken away from me," he wrote at the time.

On Friday evening, after the CAS ruling, his post was wordless, showing only a close-up of two feet wearing Pogba football boots with socks bearing his initials and decorated with the French flag and the two World Cup stars.

A key figure when France won the 2018 world title in Russia, Pogba collected four Serie A titles in his first stint at Juventus but had a string of problems, on and off the pitch, after his 2022 return from Manchester United.

During the 2022-23 season, Pogba made just 10 appearances for the club, mainly due to a knee injury that also ruled him out of the World Cup in Qatar, where France lost out to Argentina in the final in December 2022.&nbsp;

He was also the victim of a case of organised extortion, for which six men, including his brother Mathias, were last month ordered to stand trial.

'Nightmare is over,' says France footballer Paul Pogba after four-year doping ban reduced to 18 months

Diogo Jota's early goal was enough to give Liverpool a tight 1-0 victory at Crystal Palace on Saturday and ensure the Reds go into the international break top of the Premier League, though goalkeeper Alisson was forced off injured late on.

Palace had the ball in the net inside 30 seconds after Ismaila Sarr got in behind Kostas Tsimikas and centred to Eddie Nketiah, who finished deftly but had strayed offside.

The hosts started the game sharply but Liverpool took the lead with their first real attack in the ninth minute when Cody Gakpo ran on to Tsimikas' through ball down the left.

He centred for Jota, who breezed past Palace debutant Trevor Chalobah to poke home from close range and record his fourth goal of the season in all competitions.

Jota should have doubled his tally in the 34th minute after good work by Mohamed Salah and the impressive Ryan Gravenberch, whose ball from the right found Jota unmarked but he scuffed his effort well wide.

Liverpool enjoyed almost 75 per cent&nbsp;possession in the first half but without creating many clear-cut chances and Palace almost made them pay on the stroke of half-time.

Maxence Lacroix's quick pass played Ismaila Sarr in behind, but his low effort was well saved by Alisson.

The second half began quietly before the visitors began to move through the gears and Salah drew a smart block from Palace keeper Dean Henderson after cushioning down a wonderful pass from Virgil van Dijk.

Jota missed another good chance just after the hour when Trent Alexander-Arnold found him in space from a free kick, but the Portugal forward mistimed his header.

Liverpool's failure to kill the game almost cost them as Eddie Nketiah and Eberechi Eze drew good saves from Alisson, who went off injured after he was forced into a hasty clearance.

That brought Vitezslav Jaros on for his Liverpool debut with the Palace fans sensing a shift in momentum, but Eze shot straight at Jaros who also stopped substitute Jean-Philippe Mateta in his tracks in added time.

Liverpool stay top with 18 points from seven games and open up a four-point lead on Manchester City and Arsenal, who play later on Saturday.

"I think it's always hard to come here. The results over the years have all been very tight and close," said man of the match Van Dijk. "We could have played a bit better in the second half. Overall, it's a big three points and we go into the international break on a high."

Palace remain winless with three points from seven league games.

Premier League: Liverpool tighten grip at top after hard-fought win over Crystal Palace

Manchester United co-owner Jim Ratcliffe refused to guarantee Erik ten Hag's future at Old Trafford as he admitted the club is not "where it should be" under the troubled boss.

Ratcliffe had a chance to quash reports that Ten Hag is in danger of the sack when he spoke ahead of United's crucial Premier League trip to Aston Villa on Sunday.

But the 71-year-old's downbeat assessment of United's predicament was hardly encouraging for Ten Hag as he fights to save his job.&nbsp;

"I don't want to answer that question. I like Erik. I think he's a very good coach but at the end of the day it's not my call," Ratcliffe told the BBC on Friday.

Ten Hag's side are languishing in 13th place after winning only two of their first six league matches.

They suffered a dismal 3-0 home defeat against Tottenham last weekend and blew a two-goal lead in their 3-3 draw at Porto in the Europa League on Thursday.

United's struggles have piled pressure on Ten Hag, who only survived a woeful eighth-place finish last season after Ratcliffe and his advisors conducted an internal review into the Dutchman's turbulent two-year reign.

Ratcliffe reportedly spoke to former Bayern Munich and Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel about the United job during the review before opting to keep faith with Ten Hag, who had masterminded a surprise FA Cup final win over Manchester City in May.

But the British billionaire, who took charge of United's football operations after buying a stake in the club in February, was more equivocal about Ten Hag on Friday when he was pressed on his manager's travails.

Insisting any decision on the former Ajax boss would be made in conjunction with United's new sporting director Dan Ashworth and chief executive Omar Berrada, Ratcliffe said: "It's the management team that's running Manchester United that have to decide how we best run the team in many different respects.

"But that team that's running Manchester United has only been together since June or July. They weren't there in January, February, March or April -- Omar and Dan Ashworth. They only arrived in July.

"They've only been there, you can count it in weeks almost. They've not been there a long time so they need to take stock and make some sensible decisions.

"Our objective is very clear, we want to take Manchester United back to where it should be, and it's not there yet, obviously. That's very clear."

Premier League: Jim Ratcliffe refuses to guarantee Erik Ten Hag's Man Utd future

Southampton have been on the wrong side of results in the Premier League, but the club continues to fly when it comes to nurturing academy products. Part of the academy product is the iconic and legendary figure Matt Le Tissier. The legendary player spoke exclusively to WION (World Is One News) on Friday (Oct 4) and opened up about the latest partnership between Bhaichung Bhutia Football Schools and Southampton.

<h2>Matt Le Tissier speaks to WION</h2>

Renowned for his ability on the field, Le Tissier’s down-to-earth approach was the highlight as he spoke to WION’s Aditya Pimpale. According to the former England international, Arsenal remain the favourites to win the Premier League title while Erling Haaland, Vinicius Jr and Jude Bellingham will tightly contest for the Ballon d’Or this season.

<h2>Question: How is Southampton looking forward to working in Indian football?</h2>

Yes, it is a great launch and we want Indian football to grow with our state-of-the-art facilities and assistance. There are a lot of things to be learned and I hope there will be a day when India will have a player in the Premier League.

<h2>Question: Where do you see Indian football 10 years after the latest collaboration?</h2>

Well, the aim is to get high rewards and if there is a player in the Premier League from India in the next 10 years, then that is a success for us. The BBFS will be of great help while Southampton will look to give every possible support to make it happen.

<h2>Question: Who is the favourite to win the Premier League title?</h2>

Well, before Rodri got injured I had Man City to win the Premier League title, but now I am backing Arsenal to win the Premier League. They look like ready to go and take the next step and have shown the hunger in last two seasons. I just about give the nod to Arsenal if it goes down to the wire in the title race.

<h2>Question: Who is the favourite to win the Ballon d’Or?</h2>

It is another tough call but I will back Erling Haaland to win as he keeps on scoring goals for Man City. I won’t be surprised if either Jude Bellingham or Vinicius Jr win the Ballon d’Or as they all had a great season. Rodri’s injury has somewhat put him behind in the race but it will be an interesting race to win the Ballon d’Or.

I won’t be surprised if either Jude Bellingham or Vinicius Jr win the Ballon d’Or as they all had a great season. Rodri’s injury has somewhat put him behind in the race but it will be an interesting race to win the Ballon d’Or.

Luis Suarez’s famous bite of Branislav Ivanovic went down as an infamous incident in 2013, but memories of that incident were recently refreshed after Preston striker Milutin Osmajic was involved in a similar incident on September 22. Osmajic who had bitten Owen Beck in the all-Lancashire affair in England’s second division (Championship) will now face an eight-match ban after a verdict was passed by FA’s disciplinary committee on Friday (Oct 4). The Montenegrin striker was found guilty of the same and will now face time out with an expected return in the first week of December.

<h2>What was the case?</h2>

On September 22, in the Championship clash between Blackburn Rovers and Preston, Milutin Osmajic had bitten Beck’s back causing wide criticism of the attacker. The match ended in a goalless draw but much of the headlines were written by the ill-fated incident.

Announcing the sanctions, a Football Association spokesperson said on Friday: "The forward admitted that he committed an act of violent conduct around the 87th minute by biting an opponent.

"An independent regulatory commission imposed his sanctions following a hearing.

"Its written reasons will be published in due course."

The incident did not go well with Blackburn Rovers boss John Eustace who was seen furious after the match ended. "[Beck's] got a big bite mark on the back of his neck.

"He's shown all the lads. He's a little bit quiet, a little bit shook up."

In addition to his eight-match ban, Osmajic was given a fine of £15,000 ($19.600) for the incident. Interestingly, both Beck and Osmajic could meet again as early as October 14 where they will represent their national sides in the Nations League. Since the ban is limited to domestic competitions only, both Beck and Osmajic could have a spicy meeting when Wales and Montenegro go head-to-head.

Harry Maguire struck in the 91st minute to spare Manchester United's blushes as they rescued a 3-3 draw at Porto in the Europa League on Thursday, while Chelsea kickstarted their Conference League campaign with a home win. Tottenham maintained their 100 percent start in the Europa League at Ferencvaros but Serie A side Roma went down 1-0 in Sweden against Elfsborg.

The beleaguered Erik ten Hag's Man United made a blistering start in Porto with goals from Marcus Rashford and Rasmus Hojlund firing them into a 2-0 lead in the opening 20 minutes. But Pepe pulled one back for the hosts on 27 minutes before a brace by Samu Omorodion either side of the break flipped the game on its head.

Bruno Fernandes was given his marching orders for a high boot with nine minutes remaining and United seemed to be heading to a second defeat in a week after losing their skipper to another red card. But Maguire popped up in injury time to head in from a corner and grab the Manchester club their second draw in two Europa League outings this term and relieve some of the pressure on Ten Hag.

"I don't judge us in this moment. Judge us at the end of the season," Ten Hag told TNT Sports. "We are in the process. Just wait. We have to develop this team. We will work and continue. We will fight."

Chelsea marked their first-ever appearance in the Conference League with a 4-2 win over visiting Belgian side Gent. Manager Enzo Maresca utilised his large squad, naming an entirely different starting XI to the one that played in the league at the weekend.

Renato Veiga headed Chelsea into the lead in the 12th minute, which Pedro Neto then doubled one minute after the interval. Tsuyoshi Watanabe made it 2-1 in the 50th minute but two goals from Christopher Nkunku and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall in seven minutes killed off the tie before Omri Gandelman scored a consolation.

A 44th-minute penalty by Michael Baidoo was enough to give Elfsborg a surprise 1-0 win at home to Roma, who sit on one point after two games.

<h2>- Johnson on fire -</h2>

Earlier, Tottenham ground out a 2-1 win away to Hungary's Ferencvaros in the Europa League. Goals in both halves from Pape Sarr and Brennan Johnson did the job for spurs despite a late Barnabas Varga strike.&nbsp;

"I'm really happy. It's never easy going away from home in Europe," Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou told TNT sports. "You saw the atmosphere tonight, there were a lot of things to deal with and also with four teenagers (in the team)."

An inexperienced Spurs side made a slow start and Ferencvaros thought they had taken the lead in the 18th minute through Varga, but VAR ruled that there had been an offside in the build-up.

The Premier League club broke the deadlock in the 23rd minute when Sarr was the only player in the Ferencvaros box to keep his cool. The home side failed to clear the danger on three occasions, allowing Sarr to pounce and slot home from inside the six-yard box.

As Ferencvaros started to threaten late on, Johnson got his fifth in as many games with a left-footed finish that kissed the post on its way into the back of the net in the 86th minute. And Spurs needed the two-goal buffer as Varga scored in the 90th minute to set up a nervous finale.

Harry Maguire spares Manchester United's blushes in Europe as Chelsea, Tottenham emerge victorious

World football's governing body FIFA made no verdict either way Thursday on a Palestinian request to suspend Israel, instead launching committee investigations to inform an eventual decision.&nbsp;

At FIFA's congress in Bangkok in May, the Palestinian Football Association (PFA) called for its Israeli counterpart to be suspended and for Israeli teams to be banned from FIFA events.

FIFA was initially set to hold an extraordinary session of its ruling council before July 20 to review the independent legal analysis and decide how to proceed.

However the deadline was pushed back to give legal experts more time to complete a report.

At the organisation's headquarters in Zurich on Thursday, the FIFA council adopted the recommendations and conclusions reached in the legal analysis.

It decided that its disciplinary committee would be mandated to investigate the alleged offence of discrimination raised by the PFA.

Meanwhile the FIFA governance, audit and compliance committee "will be entrusted with the mission to investigate -- and subsequently advise the FIFA Council on -- the participation in Israeli competitions of Israeli football teams allegedly based in the territory of Palestine."

FIFA president Gianni Infantino said in a statement: "The FIFA Council has implemented due diligence on this very sensitive matter and, based on a thorough assessment, we have followed the advice of the independent experts.

"The ongoing violence in the region confirms that, above all considerations... we need peace.

"As we remain extremely shocked by what is happening, and our thoughts are with those who are suffering, we urge all parties to restore peace to the region with immediate effect."

Injured Kylian Mbappe to miss France's Nations League contests, confirms coach Didier Deschamps

Holders Real Madrid suffered a shock 1-0 loss to Lille in the Champions League on Wednesday, while Aston Villa defeated Bayern Munich 1-0 in a repeat of the 1982 European Cup final.&nbsp;Liverpool continued their flying start under new boss Arne Slot with a 2-0 victory at home to Bologna to secure a second successive win over Italian opposition this season.

Kylian Mbappe made his return from injury for Madrid in France as a substitute but he was upstaged by Jonathan David, whose penalty condemned Carlo Ancelotti's side to a first loss in all competitions since January -- a run spanning 36 matches.

"It hasn't been a very good night for us, we shouldn't look for excuses," said Ancelotti. "We could have equalised at the end but it wouldn't have been deserved."

Canada international David, scorer of a hat-trick in Ligue 1 at the weekend, buried his spot-kick at the end of the first half after Eduardo Camavinga used his arm to block a strike from Edon Zhegrova. Lille goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier produced a string of late saves as the French club clung on for a famous win over the record 15-time European champions.

Villa also enjoyed a night to remember as a brilliant goal from in-form Colombian forward Jhon Duran lifted the hosts past Bayern. Duran's majestic lob in the 79th minute caught Manuel Neuer well out of position and earned Villa their second win in a row in the club's first appearance in Europe's top competition in 41 years.

Harry Kane almost snatched a last-gasp equaliser but Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez pulled off a superb stop to deny the England captain.

"It's unreal to be fair. This is the loudest Villa Park that I've heard since I joined the club, that's for sure, it was hurting my ears at some point," Martinez told TNT Sports. "It's a statement, there's still a lot to play. We want to qualify in the first eight, in the top eight, it's one step at a time."

At Anfield, Alexis Mac Allister prodded in from close range after meeting Mohamed Salah's cross to give Liverpool an early lead.&nbsp;

Dan Ndoye hit the post for Champions League debutants Bologna, but Salah made the game safe with a terrific curling effort in the final quarter of an hour.

Slot is the first Liverpool manager to win eight of his opening nine matches, surpassing even the likes of Jurgen Klopp, Kenny Dalglish, Bill Shankly and Bob Paisley.

"It's hardly impossible to do something special at this club. It says a lot about how we started how players bought into it, the effort put in," said Slot.

<h2>- Juventus resilient as Atletico flop -</h2>

Juventus won 3-2 in a thrilling encounter against RB Leipzig in Germany despite having goalkeeper Michele Di Gregorio sent off for handling outside his area. Leipzig led twice through goals from Benjamin Sesko but Juventus replied both times through Dusan Vlahovic, his magnificent second coming just after Di Gregorio saw red on the hour.

Francisco Conceicao's fine solo effort late on won it for Juventus, who are one of seven teams with maximum points in the new 36-team league phase.

Atletico Madrid fell to a humiliating 4-0 loss at Benfica. The Portuguese team went ahead through Kerem Aturkoglu, with Angel Di Maria extending the lead from the penalty spot.

Alexander Bah headed home the third and Orkun Kokcu completed the rout with another penalty. Monaco rallied from two goals down on a sodden pitch to salvage a 2-2 draw away to Dinamo Zagreb.

Goals from Petar Sucic and Martin Baturina had Dinamo on course for victory, but Mohammed Salisu halved the deficit for Monaco before Dennis Zakaria equalised from the spot in the final minute.

Champions League newcomers Girona slid to a second straight defeat after scoring two own goals in a 3-2 home loss to Feyenoord.

David Lopez put Girona ahead before Yangel Herrera turned into his own net and Antoni Milambo then gave Feyenoord the lead.&nbsp;

Donny van de Beek equalised in the second half but Ladislav Krejci's own goal sank Girona as both sides also missed a penalty.

Atalanta strolled to a 3-0 win over Shakhtar Donetsk in Gelsenkirchen with goals from Berat Djimsiti, Ademola Lookman and Raoul Bellanova.

Club Brugge picked up their first points courtesy of Christos Tzolis' goal in a 1-0 win at Sturm Graz.

We want to qualify in the first eight, in the top eight, it's one step at a time." At Anfield, Alexis Mac Allister prodded in from close range after meeting Mohamed Salah's cross to give Liverpool an early lead. Champions League newcomers Girona slid to a second straight defeat after scoring two own goals in a 3-2 home loss to Feyenoord. AFC Champions League: Al Hilal, buoyed by Neymar's return, romp past Al Shorta 5-0

Inter Milan won their first match of this season's revamped Champions League on Tuesday by sweeping aside Red Star Belgrade 4-0 at the San Siro. A stunning free-kick from Hakan Calhanoglu opened the scoring in the 11th minute under a downpour in northern Italy, before Marko Arnautovic rolled in his first goal of the campaign on the hour.&nbsp;

Captain Lautaro Martinez added a third in the 71st minute and shortly afterwards won the penalty from which Iran forward Mehdi Taremi completed a comfortable home success. Martinez, who was in line to take the spot-kick with Calhanoglu already substituted, handed Taremi the chance to score his first Inter goal past Israel international goalkeeper Omri Glazer.

"I'm glad to score tonight, to play good. Thanks to my teammates. It was great," Taremi said to Sky before suggesting he expected a deep run from his new team. "Our goal as a big club is to reach the final, as Inter must try to win every game. We'll take it step by step."

Tuesday's win moved the Italian champions up to four points and into the top eight positions of the new league phase of the elite club competition, from which teams qualify directly for the last 16, ahead of Wednesday's matches.

It's too early to say whether Inter will avoid the play-offs come next year but Simone Inzaghi's side were too good for Red Star even with seven changes from the team which beat Udinese at the weekend.

And Inter have already shown that they can tangle with the best in their goalless draw at Manchester City a fortnight ago. "It's a win that we needed after playing well in Manchester, but we need to keep moving in this direction," said Inzaghi.

Red Star are in 32nd place after losing their first two matches and coach Vladan Milojevic lamented an error strewn performance. "We gave away four goals, I said after the Benfica game (lost 2-1) that we can't concede those sorts of goals... when you make these kinds of errors you can't do much else," he told reporters.

- Ultras arrests -

The match was played against the backdrop of mass arrests of leading figures within both Inter and AC Milan's hardcore ultras fan groups for a variety of crimes relating to illegal profits made around matches. Police arrested 19 people, almost all ultras, on Monday for "criminal conspiracy aggravated by mafia methods, extortion, assault and other serious crimes".

The alleged crimes involve activities around the San Siro stadium on matchdays, ranging from ticket touting to control of parking, sales from concession stands and taking payment from people without tickets and letting them into the stadium.

Monday's arrests came after a long investigation into both clubs' ultras and the shocking killing last month of Antonio Bellocco, the scion of a powerful 'Ndrangheta clan who was stabbed to death by fellow Inter ultra Andrea Beretta.

Investigators from the finance police and anti-mafia authorities said on Monday that Inter and Milan were not being probed and that the pair had been "damaged" by the affair.

Those arrests and the soaking wet weather in Milan didn't dampen the atmosphere in the Curva Nord section of the San Siro, where Inter's loudest fans stood and roared their team from the first minute.

The whole stadium was on its feet and bouncing after Calhanoglu whipped in his beautiful free-kick to put the hosts ahead as Inter dominated proceedings.

Arnautovic and Denzel Dumfries were both flagged offside as they netted while Henrikh Mkhitaryan wasted two great chances to add to Inter's deserved lead.

Mkhitaryan just failed to get a proper foot on Piotr Zielinski's brilliant cross in the 58th minute, but moments later Arnautovic rolled in Inter's second after Taremi robbed the ball from former AC Milan midfielder Rade Krunic.

Red Star crumbled and Martinez scored his third goal of the season after another fine assist from Taremi, who was given a gift from his Argentine strike partner as thanks for his sterling work up front which helped Inter secure a fine win.

Inter Milan thrash Red Star 4-0 to claim first Champions League win

Arsenal beat Paris Saint-Germain 2-0 in their heavyweight Champions League duel on Tuesday, while last season's beaten finalists Borussia&nbsp;Dortmund&nbsp;gave Celtic a brutal reality check with an emphatic 7-1 win in Germany.&nbsp;Dortmund&nbsp;were the biggest winners on a night which also saw Barcelona, Manchester City and Inter Milan claim one-sided victories and Champions League debutants Brest won 4-0 at Red Bull Salzburg.

The clash between Arsenal and French champions PSG in London was the big game of the day as the second round of matches in the new format of European football's elite club competition got underway. The Gunners were worthy winners with Kai Havertz heading in from a Leandro Trossard cross to open the scoring on 20 minutes and Bukayo Saka doubling their lead before half-time as his free-kick delivery from the right evaded everybody on its way in.

PSG saw Nuno Mendes strike the outside of the post from range in the first half while Joao Neves hit the woodwork after the break, but the visitors could not get back into the game. It is a first win in the Champions League this season for Mikel Arteta's Arsenal, who drew 0-0 away to Atalanta on matchday one two weeks ago.

"Really, really happy with the performance," Arteta told broadcaster Amazon Prime. "The Champions League brings different demands but I think we handled it really well."

<h2>- Adeyemi hat-trick -</h2>

Dortmund&nbsp;are currently on top of the 36-team league after they followed a 3-0 win at Club Brugge in their first game by trouncing Scottish champions Celtic in Germany. Karim Adeyemi scored a hat-trick in the first half for&nbsp;Dortmund, who were 5-1 ahead at half-time. Emre Can opened the scoring from the penalty spot before Daizen Maeda equalised, but Adeyemi then took centre stage.

Serhou Guirassy netted a penalty before the interval and made it 6-1 midway through the second half, with substitute Felix Nmecha wrapping up the victory late on.

It is&nbsp;Dortmund's biggest winning margin in the Champions League alongside a 6-0 win away to Legia Warsaw in 2016.

"There's no such thing as a perfect game, but it was very, very good," said Can. "This has to be the standard we aim to set."

"We knew after the game against Monaco in the Champions League we had to give a quick reply in the next game, which was this one, and we did that well," Raphinha told broadcaster Movistar.

Winners of the Champions League in 2023, Pep Guardiola's City were comfortable 4-0 winners away to Slovan Bratislava in Slovakia, with Ilkay Gundogan, Phil Foden, Erling Haaland and James McAtee getting the goals.

Inter, who lost to City in the final in Istanbul two seasons ago, won by the same scoreline at home to Red Star Belgrade.

Hakan Calhanoglu set Inter on their way with a stunning early free-kick before Marko Arnautovic, Lautaro Martinez and Mehdi Taremi all netted in the second half, the latter from a penalty.

German champions Bayer Leverkusen got their second straight win in this season's competition as a Victor Boniface goal early in the second half allowed them to beat AC Milan 1-0.

<h2>- Brest surprise -</h2>

Meanwhile Brest, the French Champions League newcomers, also made it two wins out of two with a remarkable 4-0 victory away to Salzburg in Austria. Senegal striker Abdallah Sima, the forward on loan from Brighton who got their winner against Sturm Graz two weeks ago, scored twice.

Mahdi Camara and Mathias Pereira Lage also found the target with Brest scoring three of their goals in the space of 10 second-half minutes.

Salzburg, Slovan Bratislava and Young Boys are the bottom three in the early standings. VfB Stuttgart and Sparta Prague drew 1-1 with Enzo Millot putting the German side ahead and Finnish international Kaan Kairinen equalising before the interval.

PSV Eindhoven and Sporting Lisbon also drew 1-1. Jerdy Schouten's opener for the Dutch champions was cancelled out by Daniel Braganca's late leveller.

Arsenal beat PSG in Champions League duel, Dortmund thrash Celtic

Robert Lewandowski struck twice for Barcelona as they demolished Young Boys 5-0 in a one-sided&nbsp;Champions&nbsp;League&nbsp;clash on Tuesday. The Catalan giants, five-time winners, made amends for their defeat by Monaco in their first match by thumping their Swiss visitors.

Raphinha and Inigo Martinez strikes as well as an own goal helped Hansi Flick's side secure a sizeable victory and boost their goal difference significantly. "We knew after the game against Monaco in the&nbsp;Champions&nbsp;League&nbsp;we had to give a quick reply in the next game, which was this one, and we did that well," Raphinha told Movistar.

"A couple of days ago we lost a game in La Liga too (at Osasuna) and we had to give a quick response, and we did that. "It's much easier playing here at home because of the joy (the fans) give us."

Raphinha said with the expanded&nbsp;Champions&nbsp;League&nbsp;format and one table for all the teams, it was useful to build a good goal difference.

"It's important to score so many goals because at the end of the eight games, it will be handy," he added.&nbsp; Barca coach Flick rolled out arguably his strongest available team after the loss at Monaco, despite the Swiss side's struggles.

Young Boys are in the relegation zone of their domestic&nbsp;league&nbsp;with just one win in eight games and were thrashed at home by Aston Villa on their European debut this season. It took Barcelona just eight minutes to move ahead, with Lewandowski applying a poacher's finish to Raphinha's cross-shot.

Jules Kounde hammered over and Ferran Torres had a shot saved as Barcelona dominated, but Young Boys carved out a first opening after 30 minutes when Ebrima Colley pulled an effort wide.

Raphinha, enjoying a strong start to the campaign, doubled Barcelona's lead from close range after Pedri's shot was blocked but the ball ricocheted to his feet.

Centre-back Martinez headed home Barca's third from Pedri's free-kick shortly afterwards as the Catalans overran their ragged visitors.

<h2>- Barca romp -</h2>

Torres wasted a fine chance for the fourth when he fired straight at Young Boys goalkeeper Marvin Keller when well placed to score. Lewandowski netted his second with a close-range header after Martinez had nodded Lamine Yamal's corner back across the face of goal as Barcelona began the second half just how they finished the first.

It was the 36-year-old's ninth goal in 10 games this season as he enjoys a revival under his former Bayern Munich coach Flick.

Young Boys winger Joel Monteiro struck the crossbar but that was as close as the visitors came to joy in Catalonia.

Barcelona fans were pleased to see Dutch midfielder Frenkie de Jong come on as a substitute for his first appearance since an ankle injury in April as the game petered towards a close.

"For Frenkie today was an important step, to come back to the team after having suffered such a serious injury, playing some minutes today was important for him," said Flick. "We need to support him to get him back where he was. For that we need time and I'll give him time. I'm willing to make it my personal mission, he deserves it. "I see a lot of things I like from him, that's why he deserves our trust, and patience as well."

Mohamed Camara deflected Alejandro Balde's cross into his own goal for Barcelona's fifth in the 81st minute.

Home supporters chanted the name of former Barca midfield icon Andres Iniesta, after reports the Spanish 2010 World Cup winner will announce his retirement next week.

Monteiro had a late goal ruled out for offside and Inaki Pena made a smart save at his near post late on, with Polish goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny watching on from the presidential box.

Barcelona are poised to sign the former Juventus and Arsenal stopper to replace the injured Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

Also read: Arsenal beat PSG in Champions League duel, Dortmund thrash Celtic - Barca romp - Torres wasted a fine chance for the fourth when he fired straight at Young Boys goalkeeper Marvin Keller when well placed to score. "I see a lot of things I like from him, that's why he deserves our trust, and patience as well." Mohamed Camara deflected Alejandro Balde's cross into his own goal for Barcelona's fifth in the 81st minute. UEFA Champions League: Robert Lewandowski hits brace as Barcelona crush Young Boys 5-0

Barcelona have signed Wojciech Szczesny as a free agent, the LaLiga club said on Wednesday after the Polish goalkeeper reversed his decision to retire and come to the team's aid after they lost Marc-Andre ter Stegen to a long-term injury.

German keeper Ter Stegen underwent surgery after suffering a rupture of the patella tendon in his right knee over the weekend and is expected to miss the rest of the season.

Inaki Pena, 25, is expected to cover for Ter Stegen but Barca have now reinforced their squad with Szczesny, who had announced his retirement last month after terminating his contract with Serie A side Juventus.

The 34-year-old former Poland international had one more year left on his contract at Juve, where he had replaced Italy great Gianluigi Buffon in goal.

Szczesny won the league and domestic cup three times each in more than 250 appearances for Juve but lost his place to close-season recruit Michele Di Gregorio.

Barcelona are at top of the LaLiga standings with 21 points from eight games, and Hansi Flick's side next visit Deportivo Alaves on Sunday.

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is confident of his team’s revival of fortunes after the club’s recent setbacks in the Premier League and Europa League. Speaking on Wednesday (Oct 2), the Red Devils boss backed his team to bounce back as they prepare to face Porto in the Europa League. Questions have been raised about ten Hag’s future after they lost 3-0 to Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League.

<h2>Eric ten Hag backs Man United for revival</h2>

"We are going to make a success from the season," he&nbsp;told Sky Sports.

"Nothing is easy, but this is nothing for me to panic about," he added. "We can sort [the problems] out, this team can sort this out."

"We created a togetherness in the summer with the ownership and the leadership. We made this agreement, and we were all behind it. We know the strategy [is to bring in] young players in a transition period. They also know in May in all my last six seasons there were always trophies and that is what we are aiming for."

So far this season, United have lost three matches in the Premier League, having collected only seven points in six matches. Two of the three defeats have come at Old Trafford, highlighting further issues in the team’s fortunes.

<h2>Make or break for Ten Hag</h2>

United will face Porto away in the Europa League, while their next Premier League game is against Aston Villa. Wins in those matches should see the Dutchman ease some pressure on him, however, defeats in those matches could be the beginning of the end for him. According to him, the Manchester United board have backed him despite the poor run of form but things could change in case they fail to win the upcoming fixtures.

Atletico&nbsp;Madrid&nbsp;said on Monday they had permanently banned a fan for throwing objects onto the field during the weekend's heated derby draw with Real&nbsp;Madrid. Sunday's match at Atletico's Estadio Metropolitano was halted for 15 minutes after home fans threw objects including lighters at&nbsp;Madrid&nbsp;players.

Atletico claimed a late point thanks to Angel Correa's 95th-minute equaliser. "Our security department continues to work with the police to identify the rest of those involved, who will be permanently expelled as soon as they are located," Atletico said. "The club's firm conviction to eradicate any form of violence and our defence of the values of sport are unquestionable. "We will continue to work with all our resources with the aim of eliminating this type of behaviour," they added.

After the incident, Atletico also announced a change to rules for fans' clothing inside their ground.

Atletico Madrid ban fan permanently after Real derby disruption

Indian football side Mohun Bagan SG has decided against traveling to Iran for their AFC Champions League 2 clash against Tractor FC. The clash set to take place on Wednesday (Oct 2) will either be postponed or the Iranian side will be awarded all three points as the AFC (Asian Football Confederation) now has a decision to make.

<h2>Mohun Bagan avoid traveling to Iran</h2>

It is learnt&nbsp;that the Indian side wants to avoid travelling to Iran as the country is&nbsp;experiencing high tension due to a war-like situation with Israel. They are also currently observing a five-day state of mourning following the death of a prominent general in its paramilitary Revolutionary Guard.

"Our 35 registered players, including seven foreigners, wrote to a club that they don't want to go to Iran now. So we tagged their letters and wrote to the AFC, asking them to either reschedule the match or move the game to a neutral venue," a Mohun Bagan source told PTI on Monday from Kolkata.

"We have decided to not travel to Iran keeping our players' safety and security in mind, because that is paramount. We have also written to the Ministry of External Affairs as their advisory states that you can go to Iran or Israel on your own responsibility," the source added.

According to the earlier plan, the Kolkata-based giants were set to travel to Iran from Bengaluru after their Indian Super League (ISL) clash against Bengaluru FC. However, with tensions rising high in the region several players raised safety issues and wanted to avoid traveling.

As things stand, AFC is yet to comment on the issue and will have a huge call to make in the coming days. With fixture congestion and a lack of slots to adjust the fixtures, it will be interesting to see how AFC deals with the matter. In case the fixture is postponed, it could take place in December at the end of the group stage. However, if the AFC turns down Mohun Bagan’s appeal for a postponement, Tractor FC could be awarded all three points.

Bournemouth's record signing Evanilson scored his first goal for the club as the Cherries beat Southampton 3-1 on Monday.

The Brazilian international sparked a three-goal blitz from the home side in the opening 39 minutes as Dango Ouattara and Antoine Semenyo also struck.

Taylor Harwood-Bellis pulled a goal back for Saints early in the second half, but they remain in the bottom three and without a win since their return to the Premier League.

Bournemouth climb above Manchester United into 11th with their second win of the campaign.

Evanilson has big shoes to fill as the replacement for Dominic Solanke, who departed to Tottenham for a club record fee last month.

The £40 million striker did not get off to a good start as he missed a penalty in a 1-0 defeat to Chelsea in Bournemouth's last home game.

However, he banished those memories by latching onto Marcus Tavernier's quickly taken free-kick on 17 minutes.

"It is a goal we've been expecting of Evanilson," said Bournemouth assistant manager Tommy Elphick, who was deputising for suspended boss Andoni Iraola.

"He is so intelligent and makes such cute runs. We haven't been finding him enough so I'm pleased for him."

Ouattara was then in the right place to deflect Lewis Cook's shot past Aaron Ramsdale.

Semenyo has so far filled the void left by Solanke and his fierce drive found the bottom corner for his third goal in six Premier League appearances this season.

It was a familiar tale for Southampton as their dominance of possession counted for little in terms of points.

Russell Martin's men sit second bottom with just one point from their opening six games.

"I am so hurt by the first-half performance after the first goal. I didn't recognise our team," said Martin.

"There was no aggression or courage. They were looking around and in self-preservation mode on the pitch. I didn’t like it one bit. They showed fight in the second half, but it was too late."

Last season all three promoted sides were relegated from the Premier League for the first time since 1997/98.

The early evidence of this season also suggests the gulf between the Championship and the top tier is becoming increasingly difficult to breach for teams coming up.

Ipswich and Leicester have also failed to register a win in their opening six league matches but do at least sit outside the bottom three.

Champions League: Kylian Mbappe named in Real Madrid squad to face Lille after thigh injury

Manchester City will look to put behind recent disappointment as they take on Slovan Bratislava in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday (Oct 2). While all eyes will be on Man City’s performance, star player Phil Foden will look to break his duck for this season so far. Foden is yet to score this season while Man City have won only one of their last four matches, raising question marks on the 2023 European champion’s performance.

<h2>Pep backs Foden</h2>

"Maybe I can have some doubts about many things, but Phil Foden is going to be back! As much as he feels good, he will be back," Guardiola told reporters.

"I think in 30 minutes at St James' Park [in a 1-1 draw against Newcastle on Saturday], I felt already something that I like that I didn't see for example, against Watford."

City drew blank in their opening Champions League match of the season after a stalemate against Italian side Inter Milan. They needed a stoppage time equaliser against Arsenal to rescue a point, while another draw against Newcastle United in the Premier League has seen them surrender the top spot.

On the other hand, Foden has not reached the standards of last season, having failed to impress. He has started the recent four of the five matches on the bench and is yet to fire on all cylinders for the Blue side of Manchester.

Tuesday’s encounter will be the perfect stage for Foden to make his mark with Slovan Bratislava being humiliated 5-1 by Scottish champions Celtic on matchday 1.

Pep and Co have an easy next few games as they will face the likes of Fulham, Wolves, Sparta Praha and struggling Southampton in the coming weeks. City’s next big test will be the League Cup contest against Spurs at the end of the month.

'Phil Foden is going to be back': Pep Guardiola backs misfiring Man City star ahead of Champions League clash

Tottenham piled more pressure on Erik ten Hag's position as Manchester United manager with a dominant 3-0 win at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Spurs made a flying start when Brennan Johnson tapped in from Micky Van de Ven's storming run after three minutes.

Tottenham should have added to their lead long before United were reduced to 10 men when captain Fernandes was shown a straight red card on 42 minutes.

Dejan Kulusevski finally doubled the visitors advantage two minutes into the second half before Dominic Solanke rounded off the scoring.

Ten Hag began the season under scrutiny after surviving an internal review at the end of last season.

A shock FA Cup final victory over Manchester City was widely credited with saving the former Ajax coach's job after finishing eighth in the Premier League last season.

A third defeat in United's first six league games of the new campaign leaves the Red Devils down in 11th and time surely running out for their beleaguered boss.

United face daunting trips to Porto in the Europa League and Aston Villa on league duty next weekend before a two-week international break that clubs often use to implement managerial change.

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou was himself under pressure just over a week ago.

But Spurs have won four games in 12 days and turned in arguably their best performance of the Australian's reign.

Van de Ven's stunning surge from well inside his own half to the United by-line set the tone as his cross left Johnson a simple task to score for the fourth consecutive game.

Tottenham were without injured captain Son Heung-min and missed the South Korean's clinical finishing as they tried to kill the game off.

Andre Onana saved one-on-ones from James Maddison and Timo Werner, while Johnson smashed another effort off the post.

At the other end, Joshua Zirzkee had United's best chance to equalise when he was denied by a brilliant low save from Guglielmo Vicario.

Any hope of a United fightback was killed off by a moment of madness from their skipper.

Fernandes slipped as he slid into a challenge with Maddison but raised his studs to catch the England international.

Ten Hag responded by sacrificing his only striker in Zirkzee for the much-criticised Casemiro at half-time.

The Brazilian was one of those at fault for the second Tottenham goal.

Solanke outmuscled Casemiro to send Johnson tearing down the right and his deflected cross was cleverly flicked beyond Onana by Kulusevski.

Premier League: Tottenham beat 10-man Man Utd to up pressure on Erik ten Hag

France's 2018 World Cup-winning star Antoine Griezmann on Monday announced his retirement from international football, bringing to an end&nbsp;a 10-year career with his country.

"It is with a heart full of memories that I am closing this chapter of my life," France vice-captain Griezmann, 33, wrote on X.

"It is with profound emotion that I am announcing my retirement as a France player, after 10 incredible years," he added in a video accompanying his message.

"It is time for me today to turn a page and hand over to the new generation."&nbsp;

The Atletico Madrid forward made his France debut in March 2014 and won 137 caps, a figure beaten only by his former teammate Hugo Lloris (145) and 1998 World Cup winner Lilian Thuram (142).

Griezmann is also fourth in France's list of all-time goal-scorers with 44, behind only record marksman Olivier Giroud, Thierry Henry and current captain Kylian Mbappe.

Griezmann scored in France's 4-2 win over Croatia in the final of the 2018 World Cup in Moscow, having previously helped his country reach the final of Euro 2016, a tournament he ended as top scorer with six goals.

Griezmann was also outstanding for Les Bleus on their run to the 2022 World Cup final, which they lost on penalties to Argentina in Qatar.

His last major tournament will be remembered less fondly, as neither he nor his team found their best form at Euro 2024 despite making it to the semi-finals.

He also played at the 2014 World Cup and at Euro 2020, as well as helping France win the UEFA Nations League in 2021.

Griezmann's final appearance for France came in a Nations League win at home to Belgium in Lyon, not far from his hometown of Macon in Burgundy, earlier this month.

The former Real Sociedad and Barcelona player had insisted recently he had no intention to withdraw from the national team.

<h2>'Magnificent career'</h2>

France coach Didier Deschamps said in a message shared by national team staff that he felt "a lot of emotion" on hearing the news.

"After much reflection, Antoine has decided to call time on his magnificent international career. We had a long discussion about this recently," Deschamps said.

"It was often said that Antoine was my favourite. We did have a very strong relationship, and that will remain intact."

Griezmann's decision to quit is further confirmation that an era has come to an end for the French side.

Lloris and centre-back Raphael Varane both retired from international duty in the wake of the 2022 World Cup, with the latter quitting football entirely last week at the age of just 31.

Giroud stopped playing for his country in the wake of this year's Euros in Germany.

"I am convinced that the future is promising and I can't wait to see the new generation shine," Griezmann added.

Deschamps will name his next France squad this Thursday ahead of Nations League matches against Israel in Budapest on October 10 and Belgium in Brussels four days later.

Mbappe will not be involved in those games as the Real Madrid superstar is currently sidelined due to a thigh injury.&nbsp;

France's Antoine Griezmann announces retirement from international football with 'heart full of memories'

Angel Correa's 95th-minute equaliser snatched&nbsp;Atletico&nbsp;Madrid a 1-1 derby draw against Spanish champions Real Madrid on Sunday in La Liga. The Argentine forward had to wait nervously for a VAR review to prove he was onside but he had timed his run to perfection and secured the hosts a point.

Real Madrid, without injured star striker Kylian Mbappe, largely kept&nbsp;Atletico&nbsp;at arm's length on a spiky night in the Spanish capital, taking the lead through Eder Militao midway through the second half. The match was suspended for around 15 minutes soon afterwards when&nbsp;Atletico&nbsp;fans threw objects including lighters at Madrid players, and Rojiblancos midfielder Marcos Llorente was sent off at the death.

"I think it was a correct decision from the referee, he had to stop the game... and then it started again, it was correctly done," said Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti.

Correa's late strike put&nbsp;Atletico&nbsp;third, while Real Madrid, second, moved three points behind leaders Barcelona after their defeat at Osasuna on Saturday. "We were very close to winning but this can happen, the opponent is very strong," added Ancelotti. "I always think positively, not negatively, I think that we've gained a point on the leaders."

Despite the disappointment of conceding a late equaliser, Madrid reached 40 consecutive league games without defeat, their last loss coming just over a year ago at&nbsp;Atletico.

This time they were largely in the driving seat, with Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti opting for veteran midfielder Luka Modric in place of Mbappe.

The first half failed to set pulses racing although former&nbsp;Atletico&nbsp;goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois saved well at his near post from Julian Alvarez, who drifted in with intent from the left. At the other end, Uruguayan midfielder Fede Valverde twice came close, with Jan Oblak first saving a long-range effort before he sent a free-kick whistling past the post.

The second half continued in the same vein until Madrid forged their way ahead through defender Militao in the 64th minute. Modric sent a free-kick out to the left flank and Vinicius Junior's cross drifted all the way through to the back post, where Militao was waiting. The Brazilian hammered home with the aid a deflection off Llorente, which left Oblak with no chance.

<h2>- Fan trouble -</h2>

A few minutes later the match was temporarily suspended by the officials after&nbsp;Atletico&nbsp;fans threw lighters and other objects at Madrid stars, including Courtois. Diego Simeone,&nbsp;Atletico&nbsp;captain Koke and Jose Maria Gimenez went to try and calm the situation by talking to fans behind Madrid's goal.

The referee sent the players into the dressing rooms for around 15 minutes before play eventually resumed. Oblak made a fine save from Vinicius' low drive and Endrick smashed wide as Madrid looked the more likely to score, until Correa's late intervention.

The forward darted in behind Antonio Rudiger and bundled home to level deep in second-half injury time. Llorente's ugly foul on Fran Garcia left&nbsp;Atletico&nbsp;to see out the final moments with 10 men, but they were able to claim their point.

Atletico&nbsp;coach Simeone aimed thinly-veiled criticism at Courtois for celebrating Madrid's goal while looking at the supporters behind him. "You can celebrate a goal but not by looking at the fans, having a go, making gestures like that," Simeone told DAZN. "The fans don't just become angry by themselves, they become angry for a reason."

The coach also pointed out Real Madrid fans had thrown lighters at the Belgian goalkeeper in the past when he was an&nbsp;Atletico&nbsp;player. There was more bad news for Real Madrid beyond the equaliser as Courtois appeared to be having some discomfort late in the game.

"Courtois had a muscular issue, he'll be looked at tomorrow," said Ancelotti. Elsewhere, Real Betis beat Espanyol 1-0, Sevilla rescued a late draw at Athletic Bilbao and Girona drew 1-1 at Celta Vigo.

Mohamed Salah fired Liverpool to the top of the Premier League as the Egypt star's penalty sealed a 2-1 win over&nbsp;struggling Wolves on Saturday.

Arne Slot's side have won five of their six league games this season and sit one point clear of second placed Manchester City, who were held to a 1-1 draw at Newcastle earlier in the afternoon.

Slot insisted this week that Liverpool are yet to prove themselves title contenders, but the Dutchman has made a strong impression at the start of the post-Jurgen Klopp era at Anfield.

Since their shock home loss to Nottingham Forest, the Reds have reeled off four successive victories in all competitions.

Liverpool fans packed into one side of Molineux chanted Slot's name loudly as the final minutes wound down on their latest win.

The 46-year-old has masterminded one of the best starts to a managerial reign in Liverpool history. If they continue at this pace, it will be hard for even Slot to deny their title credentials.

The only concern for Slot was a late injury to Andrew Robertson that forced the Scotland left-back to limp off.

"The first 20 minutes weren't great. It was a real tough start for us but eventually we took control of the game and scored the first goal," Slot said.

"Wolves have a really good game plan for every opponent and it was the same for us. It's always nice to win, especially away."

Liverpool, who last won the title in 2020, host Bologna in their second Champions League fixture on Wednesday before travelling to Crystal Palace in next weekend.

Winless and at the bottom of the table, Wolves were weakened even further by a virus that&nbsp;ripped through their squad this week.

Given their dire circumstances, Gary O'Neil's team competed gamely in the first half.

Matheus Cunha's curler tested Alisson Becker on the Liverpool keeper's return from injury.

But Wolves keeper Sam Johnstone had to make a superb save when he spread himself to block Dominik Szoboszlai's close-range effort from Robertson's cross.

&nbsp;

<h2>- Salah strikes -</h2>

&nbsp;

Without a clean-sheet in their previous 17 league games, Wolves couldn't hold out forever and Konate broke the deadlock in first half stoppage-time.

Jota did well to whip over a pin-point cross from the left and Konate timed his run perfectly to power his header past Johnstone's weak attempted save from six yards.

It was the French centre-back's first goal in the Premier League after three years with Liverpool.

Salah wasted a golden opportunity to double Liverpool's advantage early in the second half.

Mario Lemina took a pass from Johnstone on the edge of his own area and carelessly conceded possession to Salah, who shot wide with the goal at his mercy.

Wolves capitalised on that escape to equalise thanks to shambolic Liverpool defending in the 56th minute.

Konate tried to let the ball run for a goal-kick after a miscommunication with Alisson, but Jorgen Strand Larsen nudged him out of the way and picked out Carlos Forbs.

Liverpool again failed to deal with the danger after Forbs couldn't convert and Ait-Nouri finally stabbed home from close-range.

But Liverpool were unbeaten in their last 141 Premier League matches when leading at halftime, dating back to 2016 against Bournemouth.

Slot's team hit back emphatically in the 61st minute as Jota was pushed over in the area by Nelson Semedo as the pair challenged for Alexander-Arnold's cross.

Salah stepped up to smash the penalty past Johnstone for his fifth goal this season.

Konate redeemed himself for his earlier mistake with a last-ditch tackle to deflect Forbs' shot over after the forward surged through on goal.
