Israel's President Isaac Herzog has decided to give opposition leader Gadi Eisenkot the first opportunity to form a new coalition government after last week's election failed to deliver a parliamentary majority to either major political bloc. Herzog has been holding consultations with political parties following the election, in which neither Eisenkot's bloc nor Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's alliance managed to secure enough seats in the Knesset. Eisenkot will have 28 days to form a new administration, with the possibility of receiving an additional 14 days. "Now is the time to form a national emergency government. I will do everything to ensure we are worthy," the former military chief wrote on X. No political party in Israel has ever secured an outright majority, making coalition governments a regular feature of the country's political system. Netanyahu's right-wing Likud party, along with its far-right and ultra-Orthodox Jewish allies, secured 53 seats in the 120-member Knesset. Meanwhile, Eisenkot's centrist Yashar party and three other Jewish opposition parties in his bloc won 48 seats. The two Arab-led alliances, the United Arab List and the Joint List, secured a combined 19 seats, marking an unprecedented result following increased turnout among Arab voters. Their combined strength puts them in a potential kingmaker position. However, all but one of the Jewish parties had pledged before the election not to cooperate with them in forming a government. After consulting all political parties during the week, Herzog announced that Eisenkot would receive the first opportunity to build a coalition. According to a statement from the president's office, Herzog informed both Eisenkot and Netanyahu about his decision. Also Read: Poland mass shooting: What we know so far about Krakow attack that killed six; world leaders express solidarity The statement added that Eisenkot received 67 recommendations for the premiership following consultations with delegations representing incoming Knesset members, while Netanyahu received 46. However, Eisenkot and all but one member of his bloc have previously ruled out joining a government with Arab parties, although speculation has continued about the possibility of reaching an agreement. Another potential option for Eisenkot would be an arrangement with ultra-Orthodox parties, although securing such a deal would also prove challenging. Israel has previously seen a national unity government. In 2020, after three consecutive elections failed to produce a clear political outcome, Netanyahu and his centrist rival Benny Gantz reached a power-sharing agreement under which leadership would rotate between them. During his consultations with political parties, Herzog had stressed the importance of avoiding another election and establishing a stable government. He said he expected factions and their representatives to understand that, in the current reality, not every commitment and promise can be fulfilled. Between 2019 and 2022, Israel experienced one of the most politically divided periods in its history, with five separate elections taking place as Netanyahu and his political opponents repeatedly struggled to reach agreements.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Mossad chief Roman Gofman wanted to start a military operation against Iran just days before Israel’s October 27 election. According to reports the plan was stopped after the United States learnt about the preparations. Israeli broadcaster Channel 12 reported on Saturday (Nov 7) that Netanyahu wanted to proceed with the operation despite opposition from other senior security officials. They were concerned that an attack could escalate tensions with Iran and even lead to the October 27 election being postponed. A day later, Haaretz also reported divisions within Israel's security establishment over the plan, with Gofman backing the proposed action.
Netanyahu wants Trump to resume strikes: Report
The report comes as Washington and Tehran continue discussions on ending the conflict, with Qatar mediating between the two sides. N12 reported that Netanyahu has been urging US President Donald Trump to restart military strikes against Iran, while Trump prefers to allow more time for diplomatic efforts. The broadcaster said the two leaders spoke earlier this week in a conversation described by Israeli and American sources as “direct and forceful.” Trump is reportedly considering three options: resuming military action, reaching a negotiated deal with Tehran, or maintaining the naval blockade and economic sanctions without restarting a full-scale war. On Friday, November 6, Trump confirmed that US forces had carried out limited strikes on an Iranian air-defence system near Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormuz, claiming it was destroyed within minutes. Iranian media later reported explosions on the island, even as both sides continued to explore proposals to prevent the conflict from escalating into full-scale war.

Likud received the most seats — 27 — in the Knesset elections last week, but the Benjamin Netanyahu bloc fell short of the majority mark of 61 by 8 seats. The remaining 67 seats in the 120-seat Knesset are split between 48 seats of Jewish-led parties and the Arab-led parties, which won 19.

Netanyahu faces difficult coalition negotiations
Netanyahu’s coalition of right-wing and far-right parties secured 53 seats in the 120-member Knesset, with his Likud party winning 27. The opposition bloc, led by centrist Gadi Eisenkot, won 48 seats. The Arab party groupings Raam and the Joint List emerged as potential kingmakers after securing a combined 19 seats. However, neither major bloc has reached the 61 seats required to form a government, raising the possibility of prolonged negotiations or another election if talks fail. The final results came after Netanyahu’s camp amplified allegations that Arab-Israeli groups had received foreign funding to influence the vote. The claims were rejected by the Arab-majority lists and Qatar. The controversy centred on accusations that Qatar had provided money to Raam to finance vote-buying operations. Likud described the allegations as the “Raamgate scandal”, saying: “The Raamgate scandal is a political earthquake. The Joint List accused Netanyahu and his allies of running a “campaign of incitement” because of growing political influence among Arab voters. Qatar dismissed the accusations as “ridiculous and dangerous”. Also Read: Rain postpones INDIA bloc’s ‘public impeachment’ of CEC Gyanesh Kumar
Lapid declares opposition victory
Meanwhile, Opposition Leader Yair Lapid has claimed that the anti-Netanyahu camp won the election, arguing that the prime minister has no viable route to forming a government. In a lengthy post on X on Friday, Lapid acknowledged that his camp had not secured an outright majority but said the results marked a political victory. He also highlighted the voter turnout of 77.7 per cent, which he described as the highest since 1999. “The people showed up,” Lapid said. He argued that Netanyahu’s 53 seats included 13 won by parties that openly describe themselves as non-Zionist, leaving the prime minister with only 40 seats from his own political camp. “No matter what he does, he has nowhere to pull a government from,” Lapid said. Declaring victory for the opposition, he added: “So we won. Israel election results: Final vote tally published; new Knesset to be sworn in on Nov 10. Who won, Netanyahu's Likud or Eisenkot’s Yashar?

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been accused of using malicious efforts to remain in power following his claim that Arab Israeli parties used foreign backing to “steal” Tuesday’s election. This follows the prime minister’s coalition losing its parliamentary majority. Netanyahu, along with his allies, called on the internal security service, Shin Bet, to probe into alleged vote buying and other discrepancies in Palestinian communities in Israel, supposedly funded by foreign groups. However, the leader of the main opposition bloc, Gadi Eisenkot, accused Netanyahu and his Likud party of attempting to derail the election results. “It’s already clear that Likud and Netanyahu have embarked on a coordinated, organised campaign seeking to delegitimise the results of the election,” Eisenkot claimed in a video message. Also read: Australian mushroom murderer Erin Patterson loses appeal against triple murder convictions as court rules sentence was too lenient
Israel’s president criticises Netanyahu
Government officials, including police and members of the election committee, moved swiftly to distance themselves from the prime minister’s claims. Israel’s president also criticised Netanyahu directly, saying his remarks had “tarnished an entire community.” On Wednesday late evening, Netanyahu shared a Likud statement online that characterised the alleged violations as “an attack on democracy whose purpose is to lead to a foreign takeover of the Knesset, the Islamisation of Israel, and the overthrow of right-wing rule”. Tuesday’s elections left Netanyahu’s far-right coalition without a parliamentary majority after four years in government. But the main Jewish-led opposition bloc also fell short of a majority, handing decisive power to two Arab Israeli parties, the Joint List and Ra’am. When final results were confirmed early Friday local time, Netanyahu’s bloc had secured 53 of the Knesset’s 120 seats, while the rival bloc led by Gadi Eisenkot took 48. The remaining 19 seats went to the Joint List and Ra’am, the strongest showing on record for Arab Israeli parties, a community that accounts for roughly one-fifth of Israel’s population.

‘Ra’amgate an earthquake. Arab parties want Islamisation of Israel,’ says Netanyahu

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's Likud party on Wednesday (October 28) accused Arab political parties of stealing the vote in the country's election through widespread voter fraud after the preliminary results indicated no clear winner. In a statement, the Likud party alleged that Arab parties were involved in bribery, voter intimidation and forgery to influence election results. This comes as neither Netanyahu nor his primary challenger Gadi Eisenkot was expected to gain a parliamentary majority. "The elections in the State of Israel were stolen by Arab parties that support terrorism and the elimination of the Jewish state through serious criminal offences of bribery, threats, violence, forgeries, and the use of prohibited software to mobilise voters," Likud said. Israel exit polls give the opposition a narrow lead over Netanyahu, while Arab-majority parties make strong gains in the country's pivotal election

'Complete lack of confidence' in Netanyahu, says Eisenkot after Opposition leads in exit polls; Arab parties make gains

Israeli voters on Tuesday gave opposition parties a narrow lead over Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, according to initial projections, following decades-high voter turnout in the country's first election since the trauma of the October 7, 2023 attacks. Netanyahu, Israel's longest-serving prime minister, who has led the country for nearly two decades, campaigned on promises to fight enemies ranging from Hamas to Iran. On election day, he also raised concerns about the strength of Israeli Arab voters. Early projections broadcast by Israeli television networks showed the bloc led by Gadi Eisenkot, a centre-right former military chief, holding a narrow advantage over Netanyahu's bloc, which includes far-right parties. Israeli Arab parties also made significant gains, with early exit polls suggesting they could play a critical role in the next parliament. With no single party securing a majority, Israeli politicians are expected to enter potentially weeks of high-stakes negotiations to form a coalition government. The country's main pollsters, Channels 11, 12 and 13, projected that the opposition bloc would win between 52 and 53 seats, compared with around 50 for Netanyahu's bloc. However, his Likud party was projected to remain the largest single party in parliament, with 24 or 25 seats. In an effort to secure as many votes as possible, Netanyahu accused Israeli Arabs of being out to ‘steal the election’. His Likud party also unsuccessfully asked election authorities to keep polling stations open beyond 10:00 pm. The move prompted opposition parties to accuse Netanyahu of seeking grounds to challenge the election results. "We cannot leave this battle here in the hands of the left and the Arab parties that want to bring an end to the Jewish state," a visibly tense Netanyahu told supporters as he attempted to boost turnout in a Likud stronghold. Nationwide voter turnout stood at nearly 75 per cent by 8pm, marking the highest level in decades. Also Read: France protests: Demonstrators may pay up to €10,000 for riot damage under new bill
Divisive rule
Israelis voted in the shadow of the October 7 attacks and the multi-front regional wars that followed. Netanyahu, 77, has served as prime minister on and off for more than 19 years. Throughout his political career, he has repeatedly portrayed Arab voters as a threat. On Tuesday, he warned about Arabs voting by the busload and wrote on social media that Israel could wake up to a government of the left wing and Muslim Brotherhood. Netanyahu also claimed that three senior officials of the United Arab List had been arrested in the south with envelopes full of cash. Dean Livne, acting director general of the Central Elections Committee, said police had caught individuals who tried to bribe voters. He added that the unidentified suspects were not at polling stations and had been caught near their homes. Livne described the incident as an isolated case that remained under investigation. United Arab List leader Mansour Abbas, who could emerge as a kingmaker in a closely contested election, accused Netanyahu of lying and inciting to mobilise his supporters. Exit polls from Israel's main television channels projected that the two Arab lists would win a combined 17 or 18 seats in the 120-member parliament, up from 10 in the previous election in 2022. In Tel Aviv, the left-wing party The Democrats, which is part of Eisenkot's opposition bloc, said police had arrested a man carrying a knife who had moved threateningly towards its leader, Yair Golan. "Incitement and violence will not intimidate us," Golan said in a statement, blaming the incident on the ‘poison machine’ of Netanyahu. Netanyahu returned to power in December 2022, forming a coalition that included far-right ultra-nationalists. Since then, these groups have increased their political influence and aggressively supported settlements in the West Bank.During the final days of the campaign, Netanyahu posted an image depicting a nuclear bomb destroying Tel Aviv and highlighted his endorsement by US President Donald Trump, who has also frequently alleged election fraud.

Arab minority in the spotlight Around 7.3 million people were eligible to vote, with tens of thousands of Israelis estimated to have travelled home from abroad for an election considered crucial to determining the country's future direction. Since then, these groups have increased their political influence and aggressively supported settlements in the West Bank. During the final days of the campaign, Netanyahu posted an image depicting a nuclear bomb destroying Tel Aviv and highlighted his endorsement by US President Donald Trump, who has also frequently alleged election fraud.

Netanyahu warns Israelis of ‘existential threat’ from Iran, posts AI image of nuclear strike

The next Prime Minister of Israel will be determined on October 27 after the vote is done. The election will decide who remains in power: Benjamin Netanyahu, Gadi Eisenkot, Naftali Bennett, Yair Lapid or Mansour Abbas. As per the polls, neither Netanyahu's bloc nor the opposition has a clear path to the 61 seats needed to form a government. This election marks the first since the Hamas-led attack took place on October 7, 2023, which is also widely viewed as a referendum on Netanyahu’s handling of the attack and the wars that followed. Voters are going to elect the 120 members of the 26th Knesset, Israel’s parliament. Major highlights of the election include October 7 security failures, the cost of living, and Israel’s standing abroad. The Israeli Prime Minister has ordered a full closure of the occupied West Bank and said that IDF would go house to house and demolish homes in Hebron.“I have reviewed a very extensive operation in the West Bank that will be unprecedented since ’67, and we will choose the timing of its implementation,” Netanyahu said."Our first step will be to demolish this site and completely transform it," Netanyahu said. "The IDF will enter the neighbourhoods from which the terrorists emerged, evacuate the residents, go house-to-house, and dismantle the terror infrastructure. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered a lockdown in the occupied West Bank days before Israeli elections and launched 'offensive counter-terrorism operations' in the West Bank on Friday (October 23). The move comes after Palestinian militants wounded five Israelis in a firing on Friday attack before being killed in a prolonged shootout with soldiers. Israeli troops prevented a major attack, as the two assailants were reportedly carrying a large quantity of ammunition in their vehicle. Two Palestinian men armed with a handgun and an automatic rifle were found exchanging fire with Israeli forces at the Farsh al-Hawa checkpoint near the Palestinian city of Hebron, according to a report by the AFP. Amid the firing from both ends, Israeli forces eventually shot and killed the attackers. The Israeli military stated that soldiers had rushed to the Judea Junction area after the early-morning shooting attack and managed to "eliminate two terrorists". Also read: Myanmar arms training case: US national VanDyke granted permission by Delhi court to stay outside India for a month
Five wounded, two in critical condition
During the attack, five people were wounded, two of whom were in critical condition, said Magen David Adom, Israel's emergency medical rescue service. "I have instructed the IDF (army) and security forces to impose an immediate cordon on the city of Hebron and to prepare for a full lockdown of all of Judea and Samaria starting today," Netanyahu added. He added that troops were intensifying operations aimed at preventing terrorist activity, carrying out extensive rounds of arrests in the process. Avi Gil served as the Military Secretary to the Prime Minister from July 2021 to May 2024. In this role, he was the primary defence liaison for Prime Ministers Naftali Bennett, Yair Lapid, and Benjamin Netanyahu, sitting in on security cabinet meetings and handling crucial top-secret communications. Gil became the centre of significant political attention in Israel due to a bombshell interview broadcast on Channel 12 News. Gil asserted that Netanyahu actively passed up clear-cut opportunities to execute a deal to bring Israeli hostages home from Gaza alive. He also claimed that all heads of Israel's security services had continuously warned Netanyahu that deep societal divisions over his government’s judicial policies were severely eroding Israel's military deterrence. He also accused Netanyahu's office of attempting to cover up a delayed response by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in the opening minutes of the October 7 attack.
