The massive 19th-century spire collapsed into the nave of the church bringing a large section of the roof with it as a blaze tore through the rafters of the cathedral in April last year.

Bachelot told French radio that "there was a large consensus in public opinion and among those deciding" the issue for the spire to be rebuilt exactly as it was.

Her comments came hours before a commission that is set to rule on the thorny question was due to meet.

But Bachelot said the final decision was in the hands of French President Emmanuel Macron, who up until now has supported a modern architectural "gesture" on the 13th-century monument which was partly destroyed by the fire.

Macron wants&nbsp;Notre-Dame&nbsp;restored to its former glory by 2024, in time for the Paris Olympics.

But reconstruction work has been plagued by delays due to the weather, sanitary concerns over lead pollution and most recently the coronavirus pandemic.

On Thursday, four Greenpeace activists climbed a crane carrying out work on the cathedral and unfurled a banner demanding the French government do more on climate change.

Sharp disagreements about what to do with the spire also emerged after Macron said that "a contemporary architectural gesture might be envisaged" to replace the 96-metre (315-foot) spire "since it wasn't part of the original cathedral".

The spire was added in mid-1800s, replacing a medieval one that was removed in 1786.

The French National Heritage and Architecture Commission (CNPA) is due to give its verdict on how the iconic cathedral should be rebuilt later Thursday.

Last week the general put in charge of the reconstruction effort, Jean-Louis Georgelin, said the delicate task of removing the twisted and molten scaffolding around the cathedral should be finished by the end of September.

Chinese telecoms giant&nbsp;Huawei&nbsp;urged Britain on Wednesday not to rush into taking any costly decision to phase out its equipment from the UK's 5G network because of US sanctions.

The plea followed reports of Prime Minister Boris Johnson receiving a damning security agency reassessment about the long-term safety of&nbsp;Huawei.

The British review was triggered by new US sanctions that blocked&nbsp;Huawei's access to US chips and semi-conductors at the heart of 5G networks.

Huawei&nbsp;vice president Victor Zhang said the long-term impact of the US sanctions will take months to fully understand.

They will enter into force in September unless China manages to change US President Donald Trump's mind.

"We urge the UK government to take more time," Zhang told a conference call.

"What we are talking about is the long-term impact. It takes time. It takes months to understand."

Zhang said any decision to simply cut&nbsp;Huawei&nbsp;out of the speedy new network's development could delay nationwide 5G access for up to 18 months.

He estimated that a two-year delay would cost the UK economy £29 billion ($35.8 billion, 31.8 billion euros).

"The decision will impact the future of Britain's digital strategy and Britain's digital economy,&nbsp;it is so important," Zhang said.

Johnson is&nbsp;under growing political pressure to dump&nbsp;Huawei&nbsp;and adopt a tougher line with China for its treatment of Hong Kong and repression of ethnic Uighurs in the western Xinjiang region.

But Johnson also pledged last year to bring broadband access to all Britons by 2025.

Huawei&nbsp;equipment is already ubiquitous in Britain's older-generation 3G and 4G networks.

In recent years two men, known as the "Berlin" and "London" patients, appear to have been cured of the disease after undergoing high-risk stem cell bone marrow transplants to treat cancer.&nbsp;

Now an international team of researchers believe they may have a third patient who no longer shows sign of infection after undergoing a different medicine regimen.&nbsp;

The patient, a 34-year-old&nbsp;Brazilian&nbsp;who has not been named, was diagnosed with&nbsp;HIV&nbsp;in 2012.&nbsp;

As part of the study, he was given several potent antiviral drugs, including maraviroc and dolutegravir, to see if they could help him rid the virus from his body.

He has now gone more than 57 weeks with no&nbsp;HIV&nbsp;treatment and he continues to test negative for&nbsp;HIV&nbsp;antibodies.

Ricardo Diaz, an infectious diseases expert at the University of Sao Paulo, said the patient could be considered to be free of the disease.

"The significance for me is that we had a patient that was on treatment and he is now controlling the virus without treatment," he told AFP.&nbsp;

"We're not able to detect the virus and he's losing the specific response to the virus -- if you don't have antibodies then you don't have antigens."

'Provocative' findings

Diaz's findings were released as part of the first-ever all-virtual International&nbsp;AIDS&nbsp;Conference, held online this year due to the coronavirus pandemic.&nbsp;

The United Nations said Monday that 1.7 million people contracted&nbsp;HIV&nbsp;last year and there are now more than 40 million people living with it.

Diaz said his team's treatment method, which needs further research, was a more ethical avenue for gravely ill&nbsp;HIV&nbsp;sufferers than the bone-marrow transplant route. &nbsp;

"They come with a high mortality rate, there have been a series of patients who have either died from the procedures or it didn't work," he said.&nbsp;

Sharon Lewin, co-Chair of the International&nbsp;AIDS&nbsp;Society Initiative Towards an&nbsp;HIV&nbsp;Cure and director of the Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity in Melbourne, said Diaz's findings were "very interesting".

She struck a note of caution however, due to the study's limitations.&nbsp;

She noted that the Brazil patients' antibody test had gotten weaker over time -- suggesting a diminishing immune response.&nbsp;

"This is very unusual to see in someone off antivirals," she said.&nbsp;
