Two women were murdered, their bodies cut into pieces and buried in an alleged case of human sacrifice in a shocking incident related to black magic in India's southern state of Kerala. As quoted by news agency ANI, a local police official said on Tuesday the women were 'brutally' murdered allegedly in "human sacrifice" rituals within 24 hours after they went missing in Pathanamthitta.

According to Kochi City Police Commissioner CH Nagaraju, three persons, including a woman, were arrested. They were suspected of luring and killing the women allegedly in human sacrifice. Officials said the murders took place on June 6 and September 26 and the case was registered by Kadavanthra police in Kochi after report of a missing woman was filed in September.

The accused, identified as Shafi and the husband-wife pair of Bhagaval Singh and Laila, were sent to two weeks of judicial custody by a local court on Wednesday.

Ernakulam City Commissioner of Police C Nagaraju said, “Mohammed Shafi, the prime accused in the human sacrifice case in which two women were allegedly murdered at a house at Elanthoor in Pathanamthitta District, is a pervert.”

He said Shafi has got many cases, including theft and rape, against him, reported news agency PTI. "At least, 10 cases have been registered against him in the last 15 years. In one of the rape cases, a 75-year-old was raped and injured with a knife in various parts of her body. In this case of Elanthoor, the two victims were injured in private parts in a similar manner," Nagaraju said.

"Basically, he is a pervert and a sadist... Causing injury, harm and death. He will make up any story, trap anyone," the commissioner added.

The senior police official said all the three accused have direct participation in both the murders but the accused couple did not have a history of crime.

The news agency PTI reported the commissioner saying on Wednesday that Shafi, who is a history-sheeter, used the irrational fear of the accused couple and convinced them that human sacrifice would solve their financial woes.
Nagaraju said the missing case of one of the women, Padma from Elamkulam, resulted in identifying the horrific crimes.

Japan's space agency revealed that on Wednesday (October 12) it had to send a self-destruct instruction to its Epsilon rocket after a failed launch. The rocket was found to be unsafe to fly.

The country's public broadcaster NHK and other local media reported that the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) admitted that a problem had been discovered.

NHK also said that it was the first failure of a major Japanese rocket launch since 2003, and the first of the Epsilon series of rockets.

With Epsilon, Japan was to launch a variety of technology-demonstrating payloads to orbit and the mission was called Innovative Satellite Technology Demonstration 3. This was Japan's first orbital liftoff of 2022.

Epsilon was flying RAISE 3 (Rapid Innovative payload demonstration Satellite 3), which is a roughly 100 kilograms spacecraft. It was carrying seven separate technologies that were supposed to get a test in Earth orbit.

The space agency had also provided a live stream of the launch from Uchinoura Space Center in the southern Kagoshima region but it was interrupted. Without giving any details, the presenters said that some problems have occurred.

Notably, the solid-fuel Epsilon rocket has been successfully launched five times. It has been in service since 2013. On being compared with other similar rockets, the Epsilon rocket is smaller than the country's previous liquid-fuelled model. Also, it is a successor to Japan's solid-fuel M-5 rocket which was retired in 2006 due to its high cost.

A leak has been detected on Tuesday evening by Polish pipeline operator PERN in one line of the Druzhba pipeline, which carries oil from Russia to Europe, the operator said on Wednesday.

Authorities said that the leak was probably caused by an accident, though the event may still stoke concerns about the security of Europe's energy supplies even as it faces a severe energy crisis since Moscow cut gas supplies to the region after invading Ukraine in a continuing stand-off.

As per PERN, the leak was detected in a section of the pipe around 70 kilometres from the central Polish city of Plock. The second line of the pipeline and other elements of infrastructure was working as normal.
