As the status of women in Afghanistan continues to become worse in the absence of basic rights, the highest-ranking woman at the United Nations urged the Muslim countries on Wednesday (January 26) to help the Taliban to move from the 13th century to the 21st.&nbsp;Amina Mohammed, the deputy secretary-general said at a news conference that she used everything in her "toolbox" during meetings with Taliban ministers to try to reverse their crackdown on Afghan women and girls.&nbsp;

Amina, who is a former Nigerian Cabinet minister, also said that the foreign minister and a deputy prime minister were among four Taliban ministers, who spoke "off one script" during meetings with her delegation last week.&nbsp;

As reported by the news agency The Associated Press, she said that the officials tried to underline what they claim they have done. They call it their effort to create a safe environment for women. She said, "Their definition of protection would be, I would say, ours of oppression."

Ahead of her visit, Amina raised concerns to Taliban officials in Kabul and the southern city of Kandahar over the administration's orders restricting women from work and education.&nbsp;

During the press conference, Mohammed said her delegation, including the head of UN Women, pushed back against the Taliban.&nbsp;

She said, "We reminded them that in humanitarian principles, non-discrimination was a key part … and that they were wiping out women from the workplace."&nbsp;

Mohammed weighed in on a range of issues such as lawlessness, Taliban's attempt to get global recognition, etc. She said it is important for the UN and its partners to work more in some 20 Afghan provinces that are more forward-leaning.&nbsp;

"A lot of what we have to deal with is how we travel the Taliban from the 13th century to the 21st. That's a journey. So it’s not just overnight," she said.&nbsp;

Highest-ranking woman at UN urges Muslims to help Taliban move from ‘13th century to 21st’

India and China's fragile relations worsened in the past few years, especially after the skirmishes between the Indian and Chinese armies and the fierce face-off in the Galwan Valley in 2020 when 20 Indian soldiers lost their lives. China's People's Liberation Army (PLA) also suffered massive losses but never shared the number of casualties.&nbsp;

India is expecting&nbsp;more skirmishes with the Chinese soldiers in future, the news agency Reuters reported citing a security assessment by Indian police in the Himalayan region of Ladakh. This comes as several reports have suggested that China has been ramping up military infrastructure in the region.&nbsp;

Concerns were also raised after last month's skirmish between Indian and Chinese&nbsp;soldiers along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in the Tawang sector of Arunachal Pradesh. Reports said that during the face-off, soldiers from both sides sustained "minor injuries".

The assessment has been reviewed by Reuters and it is said to be part of a new, confidential research paper by the Ladakh Police. The paper was apparently submitted at a conference of top police officers held from January 20 to 22.&nbsp;

Local police in the border areas gathered intelligence reports and analysed the pattern of India-China military tensions over the years for this assessment.&nbsp;

As quoted by the news agency, the paper had a reference to China's People’s Liberation Army, and said: "Given the domestic compulsions ... in China and their economic interests in the region, the PLA would continue to build up its military infrastructure and skirmishes would also get frequent which may or may not follow a pattern."&nbsp;

"If we analyse the pattern of skirmishes and tensions, the intensity has increased since 2013-2014 with an interval of every 2-3 years," it said.&nbsp;

It further mentioned that "with the massive infrastructure build-up by PLA on the Chinese side", both armies are apparently testing each other's reaction and strength of artillery and infantry mobilisation time.&nbsp;

The dynamics of the 11-month-old Russia-Ukraine war appear to be shifting gradually from its initial state and is taking an indirect&nbsp;form of&nbsp;a global conflict.&nbsp;A European Union official however went ahead to claim that Moscow has taken the war to a different level from the initial 'special operation' and is now at "war against NATO and the West".&nbsp;

<h2>West to send tanks to Ukraine&nbsp;</h2>

For a very long time, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky urged the West to send tanks and long-range missiles to strike deep inside Russian territories.&nbsp;

The West initially hesitated to engage in direct conflict with Russia and Moscow had also warned that the supply of powerful weapons by West will be considered a provocation.&nbsp;

But, the West has finally relented to&nbsp;the demand as consensus grew among countries. Earlier this week, Germany agreed to supply 14 powerful Leopard tanks to Ukraine amid intense pressure from other European counties. Notably, the German-made Leopard 2 battle tanks are considered one of the best-performing tank models worldwide.&nbsp;

Canada said that it will also supply heavy tanks to Ukraine, with a shipment of four fully operational Leopards. Norway also said it would send Leopard 2 tanks to the war-torn nation.&nbsp;

US President Joe Biden also announced that his administration will send 31 top-of-the-line M1 Abrams battle tanks to Ukraine, although delivery may not be very soon. The countries have also said that they would train Ukrainian forces for using the advanced tanks.

Reports mentioned that SpaceX launched a Global Positioning Satellite (GPS) into space for the US Space Force on January 18. Reports have mentioned that such spirals have been seen in the past as well. It mostly appears as the upper stage of Falcon 9 dumps excess fuel when it falls into the ocean. Short-seller Hindenburg Research disclosed on Wednesday short positions in India's Adani Group, citing potential stock manipulation and accounting fraud in a report. The allegations sent bonds and shares in the conglomerate's companies down.&nbsp;Hindenburg has a track record of finding corporate wrongdoings and placing bets against the companies.

WHAT IS HINDENBURG RESEARCH ?

Founded in 2017 by Nathan Anderson, Hindenburg Research is a forensic financial research firm which analyses equity, credit and derivatives. On its website, Hindenburg says it looks for "man-made disasters," such as accounting irregularities, mismanagement and undisclosed related-party transactions. The company invests its own capital.

It was named after the high-profile disaster of the Hindenburg airship in 1937 which ignited as it flew into New Jersey. After finding potential wrongdoings, Hindenburg usually publishes a report explaining the case and bets against the target company, hoping to make a profit.

WHO IS HINDENBURG'S FOUNDER?

Nathan Anderson, who graduated from the University of Connecticut with a degree in international business, started his career in finance at data company FactSet Research Systems Inc, where he worked with investment management companies.

"I realized they were doing a lot of run-of-the-mill analysis, there was a lot of conformity," he told the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) in 2020. He also did a brief earlier stint as an ambulance driver in Israel. The short-seller says on his LinkedIn page that it gave him "experience thinking and acting under extreme pressure". Anderson has said in interviews that Harry Markpolos, an analyst who first flagged Bernie Madoff's fraud scheme, is his role model.

WHAT IS HINDENBURG'S MOST HIGH-PROFILE BET?

Hindenburg is best known for its bet against electric truck maker Nikola Corp in September 2020, which generated "a big win," he told the WSJ, declining to specify the amount.

The short-seller said Nikola deceived investors about its technological developments. Anderson challenged a video Nikola produced showing its electric truck cruising at high speed — in fact the vehicle was rolled down a hill.

A U.S. jury convicted Nikola's founder Trevor Milton, Nikola's founder last year of fraud over allegations he lied to investors. The company agreed in 2021 to pay $125 million to settle with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission over its representations to investors. Nikola debuted as a listed company in June 2020 and its valuation reached $34 billion some days after, surpassing Ford Motor. Now, it is worth $1.34 billion. Hindenburg says whistleblowers and former employees helped it with findings.

HOW MANY COMPANIES HAS HINDENBURG TARGETED?

Hindenburg has flagged potential wrongdoing in at least 16 companies since 2017, according to its website. Last year, it took a short and then a long position in Twitter Inc. In May, Hindenburg said it was short because it believed that Elon Musk's $44-billion offer to take the company private could get repriced lower if the world's richest person walked away from the deal. In July, Anderson disclosed a "significant long position",&nbsp;betting against Musk. The deal for Twitter closed in October at the original price.

Explainer: Who is behind Hindenburg, the company that is shorting Adani?

Lawyers representing Nigeria told London's High Court on Monday that the West African nation was the victim of "a campaign of bribery and deception" over a collapsed gas processing project. Nigeria's appeal against an $11 billion damages bill got underway.&nbsp;

Kremlin on Monday (January 23) said that people in Ukraine will suffer if the West sent tanks to Kyiv. Kremlin also said that the Ukrainian people will pay the price "for all this pseudo-support".

The apparent warning comes days after the United States and other allies finalised fresh military assistance to the war-torn nation to help in its fight against Russian aggression.&nbsp;

However, the West saw a difference of opinion over providing Ukraine with the german-made Leopard 2 tanks. During a recent US-hosted defence ministers' talks at Ramstein Air Base in Germany, the Western allies failed to agree to supply German tanks to Ukraine.&nbsp;

As Ukraine is facing the wrath of the 11-month-old war, it demanded advanced weapons, heavy tanks and long-range missiles to hit Russian territories deep inside. Leopard 2 tanks remained a key demand from Kyiv.&nbsp;

Several allies criticised Germany for not sending the tanks but the newly-appointed German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius said that it was "wrong" to blame Berlin. The World Health Organization (WHO) said on Monday (January 23) that over five billion people are exposed to higher risks of heart diseases because of trans fats. The world health body has slammed the nations which have not taken appropriate actions to address the issue and act against the toxic substance.&nbsp;

Experts have said that the consumption of trans fat increases blood cholesterol levels and the risk of heart disease. Trans fat is a type of fat that has certain chemical properties. It is usually found in processed foods such as baked goods, snack foods, fried foods, etc. As reported, eating trans fats is responsible for up to 500,000 premature deaths from coronary heart disease each year around the world.&nbsp;

In 2018, WHO came up with the elimination of industrially produced trans fat globally. The target was set for 2023. Since its first call, the population coverage of best-practice policies has increased almost six-fold.&nbsp;

But more needs to be done as despite efforts, five billion are left worldwide at risk from trans fats' health impacts. The report also mentioned that the global goal for its total elimination in 2023 remains unattainable at this time.&nbsp;

WHO says over five billion people still exposed to trans fats' devastating health impacts

Uttar Pradesh and Haryana have designed their Republic Day tableaux on the Ramayana and the Mahabharata respectively while Jharkhand will showcase the famed Baidyanath temple dedicated to Lord Shiva and West Bengal will depict Goddess Durga in their floats.&nbsp;

Jammu and Kashmir has portrayed the cave shrine of Amarnath on its tableau with the theme 'Naya Jammu and Kashmir' while showcasing the resurgence in tourism in the last couple of years.&nbsp;

A total of 23 tableaux -- 17 from states and Union territories and six from various ministries and departments -- depicting India's vibrant cultural heritage, and economic and social progress will be part of the parade on the Kartavya Path, Defence Ministry officials said Sunday.&nbsp;

A preview of many tableaux, some of which are still being constructed or are being given finishing touches, was held at the Rashtriya Rangshala Camp in Delhi.&nbsp;

While 'Nari Shakti' is the theme for a majority of the tableaux which will roll down the revamped Kartavya Path on Republic Day, some states have chosen culture and heritage too as their theme, they said. &nbsp;

Uttar Pradesh's tableau depicts Lord Ram and Goddess Sita being welcomed by the people of Ayodhya on their return from exile, said a senior official of the state's information and public relations department.&nbsp;

Ayodhya Deepotsav is the main theme of Uttar Pradesh, a senior defence official earlier said.&nbsp;

"The side panels of the tableau depict Ram Ki Paidi on the banks of the Saryu river in Ayodhya and a big 'Deepotsav Dwar' has been erected. It also has a sculpture of Maha Rishi Vasishtha," the Uttar Pradesh government official said.&nbsp;

Haryana has chosen the Bhagavad Gita as its inspiration for the Republic Day tableau with a huge model of a chariot pulled by four horses being its main attraction.&nbsp;

"The tableau showcases Lord Krishna serving as a charioteer to Arjuna on the battlefield of Kurukshetra and offering him sermons. The front part of the tableau depicts Lord Krishna in his 'Virat Swaroop' form as he is displayed before Arjuna.&nbsp;

"The side panels of the trailer show scenes from the Mahabharata war," according to information shared by the defence ministry.&nbsp;

If themes drawn from timeless epics shine in these two tableaux, the West Bengal tableau glows with the hallowed image of Goddess Durga.&nbsp;

It displays Durga Puja in Kolkata and celebrates its inscription on UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage List. The tableau has a feel of a traditional pandal erected during the puja and also showcases a terracotta-inspired design.&nbsp;

The Ministry of Culture in its tableau has also depicted Goddess Durga.&nbsp;

Both the ministry and the West Bengal government have prided themselves after the UNESCO tag was granted to the ethos of Durga Puja in Kolkata.&nbsp;

Among eastern states, Jharkhand has chosen the Baidyanth Dham -- one of the 12 Jyotirlingas dedicated to Lord Shiva -- as its main theme.&nbsp;

'Kanwariyas' wearing saffron cloths with 'Bol Ba' imprinted on those has been showcased in the middle of the tableau while the symbolic structures of the ancient temple in Deoghar dominate the main tableau. Uttar Pradesh and Haryana have designed their Republic Day tableaux on the Ramayana and the Mahabharata respectively while Jharkhand will showcase the famed Baidyanath temple dedicated to Lord Shiva and West Bengal will depict Goddess Durga in their floats. Jammu and Kashmir has portrayed the cave shrine of Amarnath on its tableau with the theme 'Naya Jammu and Kashmir' while showcasing the resurgence in tourism in the last couple of years. A total of 23 tableaux -- 17 from states and Union territories and six from various ministries and departments -- depicting India's vibrant cultural heritage, and economic and social progress will be part of the parade on the Kartavya Path, Defence Ministry officials said Sunday. A preview of many tableaux, some of which are still being constructed or are being given finishing touches, was held at the Rashtriya Rangshala Camp in Delhi. While 'Nari Shakti' is the theme for a majority of the tableaux which will roll down the revamped Kartavya Path on Republic Day, some states have chosen culture and heritage too as their theme, they said. Uttar Pradesh's tableau depicts Lord Ram and Goddess Sita being welcomed by the people of Ayodhya on their return from exile, said a senior official of the state's information and public relations department. Ayodhya Deepotsav is the main theme of Uttar Pradesh, a senior defence official earlier said. "The side panels of the tableau depict Ram Ki Paidi on the banks of the Saryu river in Ayodhya and a big 'Deepotsav Dwar' has been erected. It also has a sculpture of Maha Rishi Vasishtha," the Uttar Pradesh government official said. Haryana has chosen the Bhagavad Gita as its inspiration for the Republic Day tableau with a huge model of a chariot pulled by four horses being its main attraction. "The tableau showcases Lord Krishna serving as a charioteer to Arjuna on the battlefield of Kurukshetra and offering him sermons. The front part of the tableau depicts Lord Krishna in his 'Virat Swaroop' form as he is displayed before Arjuna. "The side panels of the trailer show scenes from the Mahabharata war," according to information shared by the defence ministry. If themes drawn from timeless epics shine in these two tableaux, the West Bengal tableau glows with the hallowed image of Goddess Durga. It displays Durga Puja in Kolkata and celebrates its inscription on UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage List. The tableau has a feel of a traditional pandal erected during the puja and also showcases a terracotta-inspired design. The Ministry of Culture in its tableau has also depicted Goddess Durga. Both the ministry and the West Bengal government have prided themselves after the UNESCO tag was granted to the ethos of Durga Puja in Kolkata. Among eastern states, Jharkhand has chosen the Baidyanth Dham -- one of the 12 Jyotirlingas dedicated to Lord Shiva -- as its main theme. 'Kanwariyas' wearing saffron cloths with 'Bol Ba' imprinted on those has been showcased in the middle of the tableau while the symbolic structures of the ancient temple in Deoghar dominate the main tableau.
