Some localities in China are witnessing a small increase in the coronavirus (COVID-19) cases, Global Times reported, adding that a large-scale outbreak is unlikely. Any spike in Covid cases in China mostly becomes a matter of global concern as analysts and experts have often raised doubt over the data released by Beijing.

As mentioned in the report, China's disease control officials said on Wednesday that the spike in cases was recorded (the exact number of cases not revealed) amid discussions about whether or not there will be a resurgence during the upcoming five-day May Day holidays.

The report mentioned that during the upcoming May Day holidays, there will be gatherings similar to the Chinese Lunar New Year that occurred after China had scaled down Covid restrictions.

The Chinese authorities urged the citizens to be cautious and also instructed hospitals to be on high alert. He Qinghua, who is an official from the National Administration of Disease Prevention and Control, ruled out the possibility of a widespread outbreak.

As quoted by Global Times, at a press conference on Wednesday, he said the Covid situation in China is stable but new infections appear to be gradually increasing in some areas. This is partly because herd immunity is diminishing.

Pakistan and China agree to boost military-to-military cooperation: Report

Scientific evidence is not needed to say that a majority of people sulk with their salary. People always complain that they don't get paid enough for their job. Forget employees, the rookies, who are planning to enter a particular industry, often whine over the unpaid internships, offered by the employers.

And if you are one of those, this story might interest you. A report from jobs data site Glassdoor revealed that online payment processor Stripe will pay the interns the most this year, with an average monthly internship salary of over $9,000 per month, which means $100,000 in the person stays on the same job and remuneration for a year.

A lot of companies don't pay the interns, and rather offer a job once the internship is completed. This is quite common in the current economic crosscurrents, with the job market becoming tougher.

But still, there are companies that stand out and pay the interns in fact, Glassdoor data shows that 87 per cent of paid interns reported at least $15 per hour in 2022, and the average intern actually made $24.63 per hour (an 11 per cent increase from the average pay of $22.17 in 2021).

Glassdoor, which is an American website where current and former employees anonymously review companies, listed 25 highest-paying internships that aim at helping students and new grads identify companies.

From technology to social media, the list covers several sectors, and some of the companies in the list are Meta, Snap, TikTok, Stripe, Coinbase, Amazon, and Microsoft.

Notably, these companies have not verified the salaries mentioned in the list, which is last year. And also there is no confirmation about whether or not these companies are actively hiring for internships right now.

Pakistan Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto claims SC committed 'contempt of Parliament'

A 36-year-old man has apparently managed to get rid of his alcohol addiction with the help of a surgery that lasted for just five minutes, South China Morning Post reported on Tuesday (April 25).

The man, whose surname was mentioned in the report as Liu, became the first person in China to receive a surgically implanted chip designed to remove his craving for a drink.

The report mentioned that the man underwent the procedure on April 12 at the Hunan Brain Hospital in central China. The procedure was part of a clinical trial led by Hao Wei, who is a former vice president of the United Nation's International Narcotics Control Board.

The report also highlighted how the chip works. The surgically implanted chip releases naltrexone which gets absorbed by the body and targets receptors in the brain. Naltrexone is a substance commonly used in addiction treatment to prevent relapse.

What happened to Liu?

The SCMP report detailed the issues faced by Liu, who is from Hunan province in central China, and has been an alcoholic for 15 years. He reportedly used to get violent quite often after drinking about half a litre of Chinese liquor on an average day. His daily routine included drinking a bottle of Chinese liquor before breakfast. He often drank alcohol throughout the day at work and often continue the same into the evening until he passed out.

As quoted, he said, "Whenever I didn't have a bottle on me, I felt very anxious" and as reported by Xiaoxiang Herald, Liu said that he hopes he can now enjoy a life free from alcohol.

People across the globe suffer from the ill effects of alcohol addiction and find ways to attain sobriety. Researchers are also coming up with various plans to help people reduce alcohol addiction and neutralise the tendency of binge drinking.

Five-minute surgery implants chip in Chinese man to help alcohol addiction

A report by the Washington Post revealed that the Taliban in Afghanistan are ready to cooperate with the United States authorities in combating the militant group Islamic State (IS). The report suggested that the Taliban see the IS militants as "a threat to their own powerbase".

The Taliban took control of Kabul in August 2021 when US-led forces withdrew after 20 years of war. It still seeks global recognition. Quoting US defence officials, the report mentioned that the "Afghan government" has been battling IS since it seized power.

The Post quoted a senior defence official as saying that "the duelling groups of religious fanatics are openly warring".

As quoted, the official said that "I would never want to say that we had mortgaged our counter-terrorism to a group like the Taliban, but it's a fact that, operationally, they put pressure on ISIS-K. In a strange world, we have mutually beneficial objectives there."

The Post has also credited some part of its report to the recent leak of classified Pentagon documents, to highlight how Afghanistan has become a significant coordination site for the Islamic State to plan attacks across Europe and Asia after President Biden withdrew personnel from the nation.

The report also mentioned that IS has been attacking Afghan Taliban's targets and as a counter, the latter targeting the former's hideouts.

The leaked documents assessed by the media outlet revealed specific efforts by IS to target embassies, churches, business centres and even last year's FIFA World Cup tournament.

The assessment, which is labelled top-secret, noted: "ISIS has been developing a cost-effective model for external operations that relies on resources from outside Afghanistan, operatives in target countries, and extensive facilitation networks."

"The model will likely enable ISIS to overcome obstacles — such as competent security services — and reduce some plot timelines, minimizing disruption opportunities," the document, which also had logos of Defense Department organisations, further mentioned.

A report by the Washington Post revealed that the Taliban in Afghanistan are ready to cooperate with the United States authorities in combating the militant group Islamic State (IS).

In a strange world, we have mutually beneficial objectives there." ALSO READ | Taliban kill ISIS leader behind deadly Kabul airport attack of August 2021 The Post has also credited some part of its report to the recent leak of classified Pentagon documents, to highlight how Afghanistan has become a significant coordination site for the Islamic State to plan attacks across Europe and Asia after President Biden withdrew personnel from the nation. The assessment, which is labelled top-secret, noted: "ISIS has been developing a cost-effective model for external operations that relies on resources from outside Afghanistan, operatives in target countries, and extensive facilitation networks." "The model will likely enable ISIS to overcome obstacles — such as competent security services — and reduce some plot timelines, minimizing disruption opportunities," the document, which also had logos of Defense Department organisations, further mentioned. South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol's remarks in context with Japan went viral on social media when he said that he could not accept the idea that Tokyo "must kneel because of our history 100 years ago" if ties between the two countries were to be improved. Yoon is committed to moving the relations forward with the former colonial power Japan.

But the comments did not go well with the critics as a top trending topic on Korean language social media and Twitter, with the hashtag #mustkneel. The comments also led to massive coverage in mainstream media.

The ties between Japan and South Korea were long strained by issues linked to Tokyo's brutal 1910 to 1945 colonial rule over the Korean peninsula. But recent political indications show that both nations want to focus on issues of mutual interest.

South Korean president says he can't accept Japan 'must kneel because of our history 100 years ago'

A study has highlighted the potential threat currently faced by California as it experienced a record number of earthquakes recently. The study noted that in Long Beach and Seal Beach areas, a thousand tiny tremors have been recorded over eight months.

They noted that the majority of the quakes were shallow, and reached depths less than two kilometres below the surface, but the region is at risk of bigger tremors.

The study - published in Seismological Research Letters - stated that the researchers used three dense nodal arrays consisting of thousands of sensors to detect and locate seismic events in the Long Beach–Seal Beach area of California. They said that small events can be detected at "sufficient signal‐to‐noise levels during the night when urban noise is relatively low."

The study suggested that constant shallow earthquakes, on the other hand, could build up and generate the possibility of a surface earthquake. The Alquist-Priolo zone, which surrounds the surface of active faults, must be at least 50 feet wide.

In the media release, the study authors wrote: "Our results suggest the zone of high hazard at the surface may therefore be much wider than the Alquist-Priolo zone indicates."

The study further mentioned that most of the located events are clustered at very shallow depths and the results have also supported earlier suggestions that the shallow Newport‐Inglewood fault is wide-splayed in this area.

According to the story, the "seismicity pattern also compares well with some newly identified faults from reflection seismic surveys" and the shallow events underscore the complex nature of the faults and their seismic hazard. The study mentioned that shallow events elude detection by the regional seismic network.

Some of the faults were discovered recently by oil company exploration studies, but Yang pointed out that there was no proof that the minor shallow earthquakes recorded in their investigation were triggered by oil and gas operations.

Caltech researchers Yan Yang and Robert Clayton wrote in the SRL study that the catastrophic Long Beach earthquake of 1933, magnitude 6.4, may have ruptured in part on the Newport-Inglewood fault. While big earthquakes, such as the one in 1933, would most likely begin six to ten kilometres below the surface, " shallow seismicity suggests that there are many possible paths for a rupture to propagate to the surface."

As quoted, Yang said: "The Newport-Inglewood fault along its entire length, as well as the whole Los Angeles Basin, could benefit from such studies. This would help to see if there are faults that have not been detected with the permanent seismic network or through geologic mapping."

US President Joe Biden has announced he will run for re-election in 2024, to "finish the job" he started in 2021. The 80-year-old, who is America's oldest president, said he wanted to extend his run for another four years. But there are conflicting views on his re-election bid.

There is a sense of acceptance but a lack of excitement and enthusiasm for America's first octogenarian president's re-election bid. Before the announcement, Democrats had said they like and approve of Biden, but a report by CBS noted that there will be more "acceptance" than "excitement" and also there will be "nervousness" than "confidence".

Polls have shown that the majority of Americans don't wish Biden to run again. But he is still running—the second time in four years. So, a sitting US president is willing to go against the approval ratings. Last time it was Donald Trump, whose campaign failed in 2020.

Biden said: "I said we are in a battle for the soul of America, and we still are. The question we are facing is whether in the years ahead we have more freedom or less freedom. More rights or fewer."

Biden's re-election announcement. The right decision?

A CBS report, based on the poll it ran, stated that the Democrats who want Biden to run again think his job performance warrants it and they believe that he can beat Republicans, again. However, what's concerning is that nearly half of Democrats don't want him to run. They have said that his age is the main reason and that they are not worried about him winning or losing. The polls show them saying that it's "time for someone new".

Another poll by The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research showed that just 47 per cent of Democrats say they want him to seek a second term, up from 37 per cent in February.

Despite the conflict, it is expected that supporters, and Biden himself, will bank on his decade-long experience in politics and also the first-term legislative achievements will come in handy.

Trends show that he will win his party’s nomination and there will be no serious Democratic challengers. But the road to ultimate victory will be a massive struggle as he is going to face plenty of hardships to retain the presidency in a bitterly divided nation and Democrats will vie to be united, as the prospect of Trump returning to power should be enough for the party to stay together as a team.

Biden's health issues

Concerns have been raised over Biden's deteriorating health as his gaffes on various occasions have caused critics to cast aspersions on his ability to perform in office. However, he was declared "fit for duty" by his doctor earlier this year in February. It was the final annual medical check-up before he announced that he would run for the 2024 presidential election. But a former White House physician slammed the health report of Biden and asked to end the "cover-up". US Representative Ronny Jackson, who served the Trump and Obama administrations, called the health report of Biden "alarming" and alleged that it doesn't mention the "declining" mental health of the US president.

Biden's physician, Kevin O'Connor, said in a letter published by the White House, "President Biden remains a healthy, vigorous, 80-year-old male, who is fit to successfully execute the duties of the Presidency, to include those of as Chief Executive, Head of State and Commander in Chief." As per the report, Biden remains "fit for duty" and can fully execute all of his responsibilities without any "exemptions or accommodations." However, Jackson told US-based Fox News that the report was nothing but a "cover-up".

The challenges Biden faces

The Biden administration faced criticism over the chaotic 2021 withdrawal from Afghanistan after nearly 20 years of war. The massive military aid to help Ukraine against Russia in the ongoing war has also been slammed by some Americans amid uncertain economic crosscurrents. Coronavirus, abortion, and unending gun violence are some other burning issues.

Weighing in on the same, Republican National Committee Chair Ronna McDaniel said in a statement, "if voters let Biden 'finish the job,' inflation will continue to skyrocket, crime rates will rise, more fentanyl will cross our open borders, children will continue to be left behind, and American families will be worse off."

In such a scenario, how Biden will forge forward, will be interesting to watch.

Explained: Why there is less enthusiasm for Joe Biden's 2024 re-election bid

The Italian tourism ministry found itself in hot waters after its official video aimed at attracting tourists to the nation used footage of people in Slovenia drinking Slovenian wine. Critics mocked the campaign on social media even before it emerged that part of it had been shot abroad.

News agency Reuters reported that the video was part of a $9.91 million campaign, which has been produced by the Armando Testa communications group. It was widely criticised even within the government.

The campaign, titled "Open to Meraviglia" (Open to Wonder), features Sandro Botticelli's Venus as a "virtual influencer". Venus is a symbol of Italian art and it has been depicted by Botticelli in his Renaissance masterpiece The Birth of Venus.

In the video, the computerised "Venus" was seen donning a mini-skirt and is shown eating pizza and presenting some of Italy's main tourist attractions such as Rome's Coliseum or Florence's cathedral.

Art historian Tomaso Montanari called the advertising campaign "grotesque" and an "obscene" waste of money.

Italian culture undersecretary and outspoken art critic Vittorio Sgarbi told La Repubblica newspaper, "Since Venus is naked, it would have been better to see her that way, without needing to dress her up like this."

Sgarbi described the campaign as "the stuff of Ferragni", (referring to social media influencer Chiara Ferragni) and asked: "Open to meraviglia? What's that about? What language is it?"

Many users of Italian social media platforms have mocked the video for its most controversial part, showing a group of young people smiling on a sunlit patio drinking wine in what is presented as a typical Italian scene.

The controversy erupted when some eagle-eyed viewers spotted that the patio in question is actually in the Cotar region of Slovenia, which is close to the Italian border, and the bottle on the table has a Cotar wine label, which is Slovenian, not Italian.

The Armando communications group has not responded to the criticism yet, but the Italian Tourism Minister Daniela Santanche, a member of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's Brothers of Italy party, called critics of the video "snobs".

Santanche added that the depiction of Venus as an influencer was aimed at attracting young people.

Santanchè told Radio RTL 102.5 at the weekend: "Regarding the memes circulating on the net, I had a laugh. I consciously chose Botticelli's Venus, an icon known throughout the world and a symbol of our Italian spirit."

For the attacks on pizza-making campaign, Santanchè said: "I don't understand the criticism, pizza is famous all over the world, it is part of the Mediterranean diet and of our cuisine, which is appreciated, imitated and copied all over the world. Perhaps it is criticised by the slightly snobby and radical chic people who eat caviar and salmon."

Sgarbi described the campaign as "the stuff of Ferragni", (referring to social media influencer Chiara Ferragni) and asked: "Open to meraviglia? What's that about? What language is it?" "The two SU-27 Flankers and an IL-20 from Russia were flying again without transponder signals in international airspace over the Baltic Sea," the tweet added.

German air force says Russian aircraft intercepted over Baltic Sea

Singapore on Wednesday (April 26) hanged an Indian-origin man till death, who was convicted of conspiring to traffic one kilogram of cannabis. The decision to execute the man was taken despite pleas for clemency from his family, activists and also the United Nations.

A spokesman for the Singapore Prison Service told the news agency AFP that the "Singaporean Tangaraju Suppiah, 46, had his capital sentence carried out today at Changi Prison Complex."

Reuters reported that Kokila Annamalai, who is a Singapore-based rights activist representing the family, confirmed that Suppiah had been executed by hanging. It also mentioned that the president had rejected pleas for clemency on the eve of the execution.

The United Nations Human Rights Office for Singapore had urged the authorities to "urgently reconsider" the decision of hanging, and British tycoon Richard Branson also asked to halt it.

Branson, who is a member of the Geneva-based Global Commission on Drug Policy, wrote a blog earlier this week about Tangaraju. He mentioned that the Singaporean man was "not anywhere near" the drugs at the time of his arrest and that Singapore may be about to put an innocent man to death.

He was convicted in 2017 of "abetting by engaging in a conspiracy to traffic" 1,017.9 grams of cannabis. The quantity was twice the minimum volume required for a death sentence in Singapore. In 2018, Tangaraju was sentenced to death and the Court of Appeal upheld the decision.

The Singapore government has not released an official statement yet, but had slammed Branson for peddling falsehoods and disrespecting its justice system. The government stated that its courts spent more than three years examining the case and Branson's claim was "patently untrue."

In reaction to Branson's blog post "Why Tangaraju Suppiah doesn't deserve to die", Singapore's Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) said that the British billionaire's views on a Singaporean on death row showed "disrespect" for the country's judges and criminal justice system.

As quoted by news agencies, the ministry said: "Tangaraju’s defence was that he was not the person communicating with the two others involved in the case. However, the High Court found Tangaraju’s evidence unbelievable and found that he was communicating with the two others and was coordinating the delivery and receipt of cannabis to himself through the two others."

Further mentioning that the High Court also found that Tangaraju had the intention to traffic the cannabis, the ministry also said that "Tangaraju was involved in a case with two others, where his phone numbers were used to communicate with the two others involved in the delivery of the cannabis."
