<p>The Israeli Prisons Service announced that a Palestinian detainee at the Ramon Prison in southern Israel was caught by jail guards trying to smuggle a bottle of another prisoner's sperm on Tuesday, news agency ANI reported.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The report also mentioned that the bottle was also found hidden on a Palestinian, who stays in a correctional facility outside of the Ramon Prison walls. It is said in the report that the sperm belonged to a prisoner who was placed in solitary confinement.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The topic linked to the babies born to prisoners from smuggled sperm is quite sensitive in Palestine as the report has said that more than 100 babies have been conceived by semen smuggled out of Israeli prisons.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The wives of the prisoners reportedly impregnate themselves through in vitro fertilisation, but this process is quite costly as successfully conceiving a baby this way would incur at least $10,000, or even more.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The report further mentioned that Palestinian clinics have been known to provide IVF services pro bono if the prisoner is serving a long-term sentence. The first Palestinian baby was reportedly conceived and born this way in 2012.&nbsp;</p>

Russia-Ukraine war: Lukashenko says Wagner chief Prigozhin is in Belarus

<p>Justice Department watchdog has said in a new report released Tuesday (June 27) that disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein's death by suicide was apparently a result of negligence and misconduct by the federal Bureau of Prisons and workers at the New York City jail.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Epstein took his own life while awaiting trial charges linked to sex trafficking of minors. He had previously been convicted in Florida of paying young girls for massages, and was also accused of sexually exploiting dozens of underage girls, some as young as 14, at his homes in Manhattan and Palm Beach, Florida between 2002 and 2005.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Epstein pleaded not guilty and on August 10, 2019, he was found dead, hanging in his cell at Manhattan's Metropolitan Correctional Center at the age of 66. The autopsy confirmed that it was a death by suicide.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As reported by news agency The Associated Press, in a statement released with the report, Michael Horowitz, who is the Justice Department's inspector general, said, "The BOP's failures are troubling not only because the BOP did not adequately safeguard an individual in its custody..."</p>

<p>"...but also because they led to questions about the circumstances surrounding Epstein's death and effectively deprived Epstein's numerous victims of the opportunity to seek justice through the criminal justice system," the statement added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The inspector general admitted that there was no evidence which would contradict the FBI's determination that there was no criminality associated with the death.&nbsp;</p>

<p>But he argued that the job performance and functional failures, facilitated further by staffing shortages and a "widespread disregard" for BOP policies and procedures,&nbsp;made Epstein's death possible.&nbsp;</p>

<p>It is mentioned in the report that Epstein spent 36 days at the now-shuttered Metropolitan Correctional Center. He was also put on suicide watch for 31 hours two weeks before his death after he had attempted to die by suicide that left his neck bruised and scraped.&nbsp;</p>

Netizens are in anguish after seeing food delivery agent eating from plastic packet on roadside

<p>Eric Garcetti, the US Ambassador to India, said on Wednesday (June 28) that the ties between New Delhi and Washington are accelerating at breathtaking speed and have a future of "boundless opportunities".&nbsp;</p>

<p>Garcetti's comments came just a few days after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's historic State visit to the United States where Indian PM hailed momentous developments in another AI – America and India.&nbsp;</p>

<p>He said that India is a place where dreams become reality every day and both countries have so much in common. "Indian dreams and American dreams are two sides of the same coin...A young boy selling tea grows to lead India on a global stage," he remarked during an address at an event in IIT-Delhi.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Referring to PM Modi's visit and the meetings between both leaders, he said that he saw an "incredible celebration of the bond between the world's two great democracies" and added that he also witnessed the power of transformative friendship. "As PM Modi said, the scope of our cooperation is endless and the chemistry of our relations is effortless," Garcetti said.&nbsp;</p>

Eric Garcetti, the US Ambassador to India, said on Wednesday (June 28) that the ties between New Delhi and Washington are accelerating at breathtaking speed and have a future of "boundless opportunities". Garcetti's comments came just a few days after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's historic State visit to the United States where Indian PM hailed momentous developments in another AI – America and India. He said that India is a place where dreams become reality every day and both countries have so much in common. "Indian dreams and American dreams are two sides of the same coin...A young boy selling tea grows to lead India on a global stage," he remarked during an address at an event in IIT-Delhi. Referring to PM Modi's visit and the meetings between both leaders, he said that he saw an "incredible celebration of the bond between the world's two great democracies" and added that he also witnessed the power of transformative friendship. "As PM Modi said, the scope of our cooperation is endless and the chemistry of our relations is effortless," Garcetti said. France's Bastille Day parade: IAF's Rafale jets to take part, PM Modi will be guest of honour

<p>Some of the locals in New York City aren't happy after a recent proposal issued to cut down on coal and wood-burning pizza ovens by 75% in order to reduce emissions, New York Post reported.&nbsp;</p>

<p>New rules were drafted by the New York City's Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) stating that field test data must show that the Emissions Control Device has reduced the existing cook stove's total particulate matter emissions by 75%.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The main objective of the proposal was to reduce air pollution coming from coal and wood emissions. Pizzerias are now required to evaluate whether they can install emissions control devices for their kitchen stoves, but some say those devices would cost a lot.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As quoted by Fox News, DEP spokesman Ted Timbers said in a statement Sunday: "All New Yorkers deserve to breathe healthy air and wood and coal-fired stoves are among the largest contributors of harmful pollutants in neighbourhoods with poor air quality."&nbsp;</p>

<p>"This common-sense (sic) rule, developed with restaurant and environmental justice groups, requires a professional review of whether installing emission controls is feasible," Timbers added.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>What's the issue?&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>Some critics have said that the old and historic outlets would be impacted, and the smoky flavour of the pizzas might vanish if restaurants replace the coal/wood-fired ovens with cleaner-burning ones. Meanwhile, the officials say it will affect less than 100 of the city's countless pizza joints.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Scott LoBaido, an angry activist, was seen on the streets shouting war slogans while protesting the proposal. He even threw multiple pizzas at NYC Hall in response to the city's crackdown on coal and wood-fired ovens. He said Monday, "Well… this is the New York Pizza Party! New York City plans regulations to reduce pollution from pizza ovens

<p>The Indian manufacturer of cough syrups that Uzbekistan said last year had poisoned 19 children had used a toxic industrial-grade ingredient rather than the legitimate pharmaceutical version, two sources with knowledge of the matter told Reuters.</p>

<p>The company, Marion Biotech, bought the ingredient — propylene glycol (PG) — from trader Maya Chemtech India, as reported by Reuters. But Maya did not have a licence to sell pharmaceutical-grade materials and "dealt in industrial-grade only," according to a source at the firm with knowledge of the Marion investigation.</p>

<p>"We did not know Marion was going to use it to make cough syrups," said the person, who declined to be identified while the case is investigated. "We are not told where our material is used."</p>

<p>The two sources said the syrup was made with industrial-grade PG, a toxic material widely used in liquid detergents, antifreeze, paints or coatings, and to enhance the effectiveness of pesticides.</p>

<p>"Marion bought commercial-grade propylene glycol," said a second source, an investigator, who declined to be named while the inquiry is ongoing.</p>

<p>"They were supposed to take Indian Pharmacopoeia-grade," the source added, referring to national standards for the composition of pharmaceutical products.</p>

<p>Marion also did not test the ingredient before using it in the syrups it sold to Uzbekistan, the investigator said.</p>

<p>India's drugs and cosmetics rules say manufacturers are responsible to ensure the safety of the ingredients they use.</p>

<p>Maya is not facing charges, according to the company source, but the investigation is ongoing. Deepak Sharma, an Assistant Drugs Controller for the national capital territory of Delhi, where Maya is based, declined to comment, saying the case was being investigated by federal drugs authorities.</p>

<p>Marion, which says it deals in pharmaceuticals, herbal and cosmetics products, previously denied any wrongdoing. Neither the company nor India's drug regulator or health ministry responded to requests for comment.</p>

<p>An analysis last year by Uzbekistan's health ministry showed the Marion-made cough syrups, Ambronol and DOK-1 Max, contained unacceptable amounts of toxins diethylene glycol (DEG) and ethylene glycol (EG), used in products that are not for human consumption.</p>

<p>Uzbekistan in January arrested four people in relation to the 19 deaths, including two executives at a company that imported the Marion drugs. Reuters could not establish the status of the case.</p>

<p>Uzbekistan's health ministry did not respond to a question on possible penalties there.</p>

<h2>'Spurious and adulterated'</h2>

<p>DEG and EG have been used by unscrupulous actors as a substitute for propylene glycol because they are cheaper, according to pharmaceutical manufacturing experts.</p>

<p>The World Health Organization told Reuters earlier this month its working theory is that in 2021, when prices of propylene glycol spiked, one or more suppliers mixed the cheaper toxic liquids with the legitimate chemical.</p>

<p>Asked to comment on the ingredients used by Marion, a WHO spokesperson said, "It is important that product manufacturers only use appropriately qualified suppliers."</p>

<p>Tests in January by an Indian government laboratory found 22 samples of Marion-made syrups were "adulterated and spurious," the country's drug controller said in March.</p>

<p>Authorities in the state of Uttar Pradesh, where Marion is based, cancelled Marion's licence in March. Police arrested three of its employees and issued warrants for the arrest of two directors. The three employees have since been released on bail, said Uttar Pradesh police officer Vijay Kumar.</p>

<p>One of them, operations head Tuhin Bhattacharya, said he had stopped working for Marion, which Reuters could not verify. Reuters could not contact the other two, chemists Mool Singh and Atul Rawat, or their lawyers.</p>

<p>A lawyer for the two Marion directors told the state's Allahabad High Court in April that the drugs had been found "not of standard quality" but not adulterated, adding that the directors had not committed any offence in India as the drugs were meant exclusively for export, according to a court order seen by Reuters.</p>

<p>The court barred police from arresting the directors, Jaya Jain and Sachin Jain unless they had been convicted. Their lawyer, Rohan Gupta, did not respond; Reuters could not reach the directors.</p>

<p>India's drug regulator ordered the country's drugmakers not to buy PG from Maya in March, Reuters has reported.</p>

<h2>Standards</h2>

<p>Besides the deaths in Uzbekistan, at least 70 children died in Gambia last year after taking cough syrups made by another company in India that were found to be contaminated with the toxins, and tainted cough syrups made in Indonesia were linked to the deaths of more than 200 children there.</p>

<p>The deaths prompted an international inquiry into the pharmaceutical supply chain.</p>

<p>International standards allow only trace amounts of EG and DEG in pharmaceutical-grade propylene glycol. Limits for the industrial or commercial grade version are not as stringent, because they are not supposed to be ingested by humans.</p>

<p>The toxins were found in cough syrups exported to Gambia by the other Indian company, Maiden Pharmaceuticals. The WHO linked these syrups to the children's deaths; Maiden has denied any wrongdoing.</p>

<p>Gambia told India's drug regulator in June that from July 1 it would make it mandatory for all pharmaceutical products from India to be inspected and tested in India, at the cost of the Indian exporter, prior to shipment -- the first known restrictions on national exports following the deaths linked to Indian-made syrups.</p>

<p>India made it mandatory for companies to have their cough syrups tested before export in June.</p>

"We did not know Marion was going to use it to make cough syrups," said the person, who declined to be identified while the case is investigated. "We are not told where our material is used." The two sources said the syrup was made with industrial-grade PG, a toxic material widely used in liquid detergents, antifreeze, paints or coatings, and to enhance the effectiveness of pesticides. "Marion bought commercial-grade propylene glycol," said a second source, an investigator, who declined to be named while the inquiry is ongoing. "They were supposed to take Indian Pharmacopoeia-grade," the source added, referring to national standards for the composition of pharmaceutical products. Marion also did not test the ingredient before using it in the syrups it sold to Uzbekistan, the investigator said. India's drugs and cosmetics rules say manufacturers are responsible to ensure the safety of the ingredients they use. Maya is not facing charges, according to the company source, but the investigation is ongoing. Deepak Sharma, an Assistant Drugs Controller for the national capital territory of Delhi, where Maya is based, declined to comment, saying the case was being investigated by federal drugs authorities. Marion, which says it deals in pharmaceuticals, herbal and cosmetics products, previously denied any wrongdoing. Neither the company nor India's drug regulator or health ministry responded to requests for comment. An analysis last year by Uzbekistan's health ministry showed the Marion-made cough syrups, Ambronol and DOK-1 Max, contained unacceptable amounts of toxins diethylene glycol (DEG) and ethylene glycol (EG), used in products that are not for human consumption. Uzbekistan in January arrested four people in relation to the 19 deaths, including two executives at a company that imported the Marion drugs. Reuters could not establish the status of the case. Uzbekistan's health ministry did not respond to a question on possible penalties there. 'Spurious and adulterated' DEG and EG have been used by unscrupulous actors as a substitute for propylene glycol because they are cheaper, according to pharmaceutical manufacturing experts. The World Health Organization told Reuters earlier this month its working theory is that in 2021, when prices of propylene glycol spiked, one or more suppliers mixed the cheaper toxic liquids with the legitimate chemical. Asked to comment on the ingredients used by Marion, a WHO spokesperson said, "It is important that product manufacturers only use appropriately qualified suppliers." Tests in January by an Indian government laboratory found 22 samples of Marion-made syrups were "adulterated and spurious," the country's drug controller said in March. Authorities in the state of Uttar Pradesh, where Marion is based, cancelled Marion's licence in March. Police arrested three of its employees and issued warrants for the arrest of two directors. The three employees have since been released on bail, said Uttar Pradesh police officer Vijay Kumar. One of them, operations head Tuhin Bhattacharya, said he had stopped working for Marion, which Reuters could not verify. Reuters could not contact the other two, chemists Mool Singh and Atul Rawat, or their lawyers. A lawyer for the two Marion directors told the state's Allahabad High Court in April that the drugs had been found "not of standard quality" but not adulterated, adding that the directors had not committed any offence in India as the drugs were meant exclusively for export, according to a court order seen by Reuters. The court barred police from arresting the directors, Jaya Jain and Sachin Jain unless they had been convicted. Their lawyer, Rohan Gupta, did not respond; Reuters could not reach the directors. India's drug regulator ordered the country's drugmakers not to buy PG from Maya in March, Reuters has reported. Standards Besides the deaths in Uzbekistan, at least 70 children died in Gambia last year after taking cough syrups made by another company in India that were found to be contaminated with the toxins, and tainted cough syrups made in Indonesia were linked to the deaths of more than 200 children there. The deaths prompted an international inquiry into the pharmaceutical supply chain. International standards allow only trace amounts of EG and DEG in pharmaceutical-grade propylene glycol. Limits for the industrial or commercial grade version are not as stringent, because they are not supposed to be ingested by humans. The toxins were found in cough syrups exported to Gambia by the other Indian company, Maiden Pharmaceuticals. The WHO linked these syrups to the children's deaths; Maiden has denied any wrongdoing. Gambia told India's drug regulator in June that from July 1 it would make it mandatory for all pharmaceutical products from India to be inspected and tested in India, at the cost of the Indian exporter, prior to shipment -- the first known restrictions on national exports following the deaths linked to Indian-made syrups. India made it mandatory for companies to have their cough syrups tested before export in June. WATCH WION LIVE HERE

<p>New research has highlighted damning figures as it revealed that an area equivalent to the size of Switzerland was cleared from Earth's rainforests in 2022. The report comes after a number of pledges globally to take definitive steps to end deforestation by 2030.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The report by the World Resources Institute's (WRI) Global Forest Watch said that a massive chunk of the tropical forest disappeared as forest destruction rose by 10 per cent&nbsp;compared to the previous year.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The report also stated that the rate of loss was equivalent to losing 11 soccer fields of forest per minute, as swaths of tropical forest were cleared for farming, mining and other commercial activities.</p>

<p>The report mentioned that tropical primary forest loss in 2022 totalled 4.1 million hectares. It further added that all this forest loss produced 2.7 gigatonnes (Gt) of carbon dioxide emissions, which is equivalent to India's annual fossil fuel emissions.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to the report, Brazil and the Dominican Republic of Congo are the top countries for primary forest loss by area in 2022, and in nations like Ghana and Bolivia, it rapidly increased. On the other hand, countries like Indonesia and Malaysia have managed to keep rates of primary forest loss near record-low levels.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Dire status of the Brazilian Amazon&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>According to the report, the rate of primary forest loss increased by 15 per cent&nbsp;from 2021 to 2022 in Brazil and the vast majority of primary forest loss happened in the Amazon.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The report mentioned that non-fire-related losses reached the highest level since 2005. Such instances in the Brazilian Amazon are most often due to clear-cut deforestation.&nbsp;</p>

<p>During the last year of Brazil President Jair Bolsonaro's administration, a high rate of primary forest loss occurred, which was an important agenda for President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (Lula) during the election.&nbsp;</p>

<p>After winning the election, he even laid out a plan to end illegal deforestation in the Amazon, which was a major campaign pledge that is a critical step in addressing the country's significant carbon emissions from the region.</p>

<p>Just a few days after the election result, Lula and his Environment Minister Marina Silva unveiled the Action Plan for the Prevention and Control of Deforestation in the Amazon.&nbsp;</p>

<p>India's Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) told a special court on Monday that the former ICICI Bank CEO and MD Chanda Kochhar misused the lender's funds for personal use in a case about cheating and irregularities in sanctioning loans.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to the crime investigating agency, Chanda Kochhar bought a very expensive apartment for merely around $13,418&nbsp;and also got over $7 million as "illegal gratification".&nbsp;</p>

<p>CBI wrote in its chargesheet that loans were also granted by Kochhar to ineligible Videocon Group firms and according to the prosecutor, she accepted a $64 million gratuity.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The chargesheet also said that the family benefited from the transfer of a flat in Mumbai's Churchgate area, which was apparently owned by Videocon.&nbsp;</p>

India's Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) told a special court on Monday that the former ICICI Bank CEO and MD Chanda Kochhar misused the lender's funds for personal use in a case about cheating and irregularities in sanctioning loans.

India's Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) told a special court on Monday that the former ICICI Bank CEO and MD Chanda Kochhar misused the lender's funds for personal use in a case about cheating and irregularities in sanctioning loans. According to the crime investigating agency, Chanda Kochhar bought a very expensive apartment for merely around $13,418 and also got over $7 million as "illegal gratification". CBI wrote in its chargesheet that loans were also granted by Kochhar to ineligible Videocon Group firms and according to the prosecutor, she accepted a $64 million gratuity. The chargesheet also said that the family benefited from the transfer of a flat in Mumbai's Churchgate area, which was apparently owned by Videocon.
