<p>The military parade at the OTA&nbsp;marked the commissioning of 125 Gentlemen and 41 Women cadets into various Arms and Services of the Indian Army. In addition to this, 28 personnel from the Armed forces of Bhutan and two from Maldives also completed their training at the OTA. The Indian Armed forces have a long-standing tradition of offering training to defence forces personnel from friendly-foreign countries.</p>

Many lessons to learn from India in diplomacy & inclusive evolution, says Maldives Defence Forces Chief

<p>As the Indian Space Research Organization's new-age Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV) lifts off from the spaceport in Sriharikota, 750 girl students from across India will be watching in delight, with high expectations. On its maiden flight, which is scheduled for the first week of August 2022 (likely to be August 2nd), the SSLV will also be carrying the 'AzaadiSAT' that is a result of the girl students efforts.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Weighing 8kg, this student-built satellite carries 75 miniature payloads known as 'femto experiments' (developed by the school students), a selfie camera to study the performance of solar panels in space, in addition to a LoRa (Long Range Communications) transponder experiments, which would give low bandwidth connectivity to IOT devices at remote locations. It is equipped with a store and forward messaging system for amateur radio operators. The satellite also carries sensors to monitor temperature, humidity, pressure sensors, an accelerometer, gyroscope and a magnetometer.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to Dr&nbsp;Srimathy Kesan, CEO, SpaceKidz India, the team which mentored the students to build the satellite, the entire satellite building effort was done from scratch. "The satellite bus(infrastructure and shell), on-board computer, communication system, power system etc were designed from scratch and done indigenously. It is going to motivate more girls into the space industry or to take up STEM subjects" she told WION.&nbsp;</p>

<p>It is important to note that 'AzaadiSAT' will be a normal orbital satellite, unlike most student satellites that piggyback on the 4th and final stage of the PSLV rocket. So, 'AzaadiSAT' is an upgrade over earlier students' satellites of SpaceKidz India, as the latest one has its own power systems, and batteries, that are expected to make it work in orbit for six months.&nbsp;</p>

<p>She added that their team signed the MoU for the launch on board the SSLV rocket, during the inauguration of INSPACe (Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Center) headquarters in Ahmedabad, in the presence of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.&nbsp;</p>

<p>SSLV is a rocket that is designed to orbit satellites weighing less than 500kg in Low Earth Orbit. Dr Somanath had earlier told WION that SSLV was being conceptualised as a rocket that can be handed over to the Indian industry for the entire manufacturing process and it can be put together for launch in a week's time. He added that SSLV uses less-exotic materials in its manufacturing process to ensure that it is kept simple and easy to adopt by industry.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The primary payload of the maiden SSLV rocket is said to be the 142kg 'Miscrosat 2A', which is meant to meet the increasing demand for cadastral mapping (demarcation of land parcel boundaries), urban and rural management, coastal land use etc. The satellite carries two payloads MWIR and LWIR, with a resolution of 6 meters.&nbsp;</p>

The aircraft with the special livery was unveiled at the airport of the host city in Southern India, Chennai, in the presence of Government officials, elected representatives, and school students who won chess competitions at the district level.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Indian city will be&nbsp;the third in Asia, after Dubai and Manila to host an International Chess Olympiad organized by Fédération Internationale des Échecs (French for International Chess Federation). The southern Indian city of Chennai, also the capital of Tamil Nadu, will witness Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the State's Chief Minister MK Stalin sharing stage, inaugurating the games on Thursday.&nbsp;</p>

<p>149 students from Government-run schools and three of their teachers also had the unique opportunity to fly on-board the special liveried aircraft. The group flew from Chennai-Bengaluru and returned on Wednesday afternoon and the young passengers, most of them first-time flyers had an opportunity to enjoy a game of chess mid-air. This initiative to fly the school students and also facilitate their interaction with International players, has been undertaken by the Tamil Nadu government, in order to further promote the sport.</p>

44th Int'l Chess Olympiad liveried aircraft unveiled; school students go on maiden flight

<p>A training delegation from the Bangladesh Navy is on a visit to India's Southern Naval Command, which is the training command of the Indian Navy. The delegation of five officers from the Bangladesh Navy is headed by Commodore Abu Mohammad Sazzad Hossain.</p>

<p>It is notable that India's Armed Forces train cadets and serving officers from friendly-foreign countries, as a part of military diplomacy and cooperation.</p>

India: Bangladesh Navy training delegation visits Southern Naval Command

<p>As part of India's Space sector reforms, the Government of India has transferred 10 operational communication satellites to NewSpace India Limited(NSIL), a Government-run company. This move of transferring ownership of ten satellites of the GSAT series to NSIL, would help the company rent them out(transponder capacity, services etc.) and generate revenue out of the same.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"10 (Ten) in-orbit operational communication satellites viz. GSAT8, GSAT-10, GSAT-12R (CMS-01), GSAT-14, GSAT-15, GSAT-16, GSAT-17, GSAT-18, GSAT-30 and GSAT-31 have been transferred from Government of India to M/s. New Space India Ltd (NSIL), a CPSE under the Department of Space, at a written down value of Rs.4697.60 crores(Rs.46.97billion) against the issue of equity to the Government of India, with 01.04.2021 as the effective date of transfer" the Minister-in-Charge, Dr Jitendra Singh, shared in Parliament.&nbsp;</p>

<p>This means the transponder capacity on the satellite can be allocated to a customer on a payment basis, thus earning revenue for the Indian government. Simply put, it can be compared to how an Internet service provider sells connections to homes based on the speed limit, data limit etc, likewise the capacity of the satellite is allocated to niche customers such as telecommunications companies, broadcasters etc.</p>

<p>In this case, the Board of NSIL is authorized to price the transponder capacity as per the global trends. NSIL shall carry out the activities related to offering and allocation of capacity, as per the guidelines to be adopted by its Board.&nbsp;</p>

India's Space sector reforms that are being rolled out since 2020 are also meant to enhance the same. As part of this, the Department of Space, Government of India established the Indian National Space Promotion &amp; Authorization Centre (INSPACe) to be a single window agency to promote, handhold and authorize the activities of private entities in the sector, thus providing them with a level playing field.</p>

<p>Until 2020, India's private space industries were only supplying components and providing services to the state-run Indian Space Research Organization(ISRO). However, the reforms are aimed at enabling private companies to build and launch their own rockets and satellites from Indian soil and provide allied services.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Earlier, when queried about the much-awaited Space Policy, Dr S.Somanath, Chairman, ISRO and Secretary, Dept of Space, replied that the internal review was complete and that the cabinet approval was pending and the final approval could be expected very soon. He added that the Space Policy was meant to create clarity on the private sector's ability to build its own rockets and satellites. "The bill is targeted to give teeth to Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Center (<em>IN-SPACe</em>)" he said.&nbsp;</p>

India: Aimed at boosting space economy, 10 ISRO satellites transferred to govt-run NSIL

<p>Commemorating India's 1999 Kargil War Victory (Kargil Vijay Diwas)&nbsp;over Pakistan on Tuesday, 26th July, an Indian Army Facility unveiled a special underwater portrait. Spanning 1500sqft, the portrait featured Kargil War Hero (Late) Captain Vikram Batra who was killed in action fighting Pakistani troops in the erstwhile Jammu and Kashmir. Making the supreme sacrifice for the nation at the age of 24, Captain Batra was posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra, the highest military decoration of India.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As part of the Vijay Diwas celebrations, Pangode Military Station in the Southern Indian state of Kerala organized the special event. The Indian Army, in association with the Scuba team of Bond Water sports Pvt Ltd organized a demonstration, where the portrait of the War hero was installed on the swimming pool floor.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Dr. Jitendra Singh, who serves as India's Minister for State, Science &amp; Technology, revealed in the Lower House of Parliament that India would be performing five science missions by 2025. The mission names, sanctioned cost and proposed launch date are as follows:&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Aditya-L1, at a cost of Rs.3.7billion, launch by Q1 2023; Chandrayaan-3, at a cost of Rs.2.5billion, launch by Q1 2023, XPoSAT, at a cost of Rs 0.60 billion, launch by Q2 2023, Space Docking Experiment, at a cost of Rs.1.24billion, launch by Q3 2024 and Gaganyaan at a cost of Rs.90.23 billion, whereas the first milestone of Gaganyaan Abort Demonstration will be carried out by Q4 2022" it was shared in the Lok Sabha.</p>

<p>Aditya L1 is an Indian satellite mission meant to study the Corona(outer layers) of the Sun and explore related sciences, Chandrayaan-3 is the third Lunar mission and the country's second Lunar Landing attempt, XPoSAT is meant to study the Polarization of X-Rays in Space. Space Docking experiment is a project that will involve launching two different satellites and ensuring that they are able to dock and function as a single unit while in orbit. This in-space docking is a crucial technology that is the fundamental step in being able to perform in-space refuelling of satellites, building a space station, transferring astronauts from one spacecraft to another etc.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Gaganyaan is a science mission aimed at sending Indian astronauts to space, from an Indian spaceport and on-board an Indian rocket. To accomplish Gaganyaan, ISRO has to essentially modify its cargo-carrier GSLV Mark 3 rocket and make it reliable enough to carry astronauts. As per ISRO Chairman Dr.S. Somanath, ISRO would have to perform Crew Escape system tests in 2022, followed by the first unmanned mission in mid-2023, followed by two more escape tests and another unmanned mission, before the manned flight(expected in 2024).<br />

<p>In a significant boost to the Indian Coast Guard, in the Southern Indian state of Kerala, a new Ship Support Complex (SSC) has been added to its infrastructure. "Based in Kochi and the first such facility in Kerala, the SSC will provide immediate support to ICG ships berthed here, the ships visiting the city. It can offer minor repairs, spares, thus ensuring faster turnaround for operational availability," Inspector General S Paramesh, Commander, CG Region (West) told WION.&nbsp;</p>

<p>He added that the Coast Guard had to earlier rely on the private sector for such works and from now on, the same could be done in-house. All the above foreign private firms are funded by maverick billionaires and not their respective national governments, whereas ISRO lives off modest Indian Government funds.</p>

<p><strong>What it takes for India to really foray into space tourism?&nbsp;</strong></p>

<p>Sending a tourist to space on board a rocket/spaceplane requires confidence and immense faith in the reliability of the technology - both Sir Richard Branson and Jeff Bezos flew to space on their respective company vehicles, and took immense risk to prove a point. For example, Virgin Galactic has been a service aimed at catering to the super-rich who can afford a fun ride to space. India is still at a stage when work is underway to ensure that we can send our trained astronauts to Low Earth Orbit and bring them back safely. India remains far behind in this aspect and has to master Human Spaceflight step-by-step and do so entirely on its own. Whereas, most forieign companies are operating with the prior experience, know-how, know-why, that their respective space industries have gained over the years.</p>

<p>So, for indigenous space tourism to become a reality in India (as the Minister suggested), it would require all of the following - flawless success of the Gaganyaan programme, multiple repeats of the same, development and successful flights of a re-usable rocket meant for ferrying tourists, ensuring that all systems are reliable&amp; low-cost to be feasible as a business etc. All of this requires time(in decades), large-scale investment and true dedication to the cause of Space tourism, as seen in the private-sector examples from the Western world. &nbsp;</p>

ISRO developing indigenous space tourism capabilities, says Indian minister; how credible is it ?

<p>Nearly 83%, or 1,950 out of 2,350 acres, of land has been acquired for the construction of India's second space port. Situated in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu, Kulasekarapattinam is the location of the second spaceport that India is building for the country's space programme. Speaking in the Upper House of the Indian Parliament, Dr Jitendra Singh, who serves as Minister of State for Science and Technology, revealed that the process of acquiring land was underway via the Government of Tamil Nadu.</p>

<p>"The existing manpower is planned to be re-deployed initially to oversee the establishment of the essential facilities at the spaceport and also to carry out the critical launch-related activities," the Minister said. He also added that once the second spaceport nears completion, the manpower requirement for the operation and maintenance of facilities will be assessed.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Estimates suggest that the second spaceport would be ready for launches by 2024 or 2025.</p>

<p><strong>India's Current Spaceport and What is special about it?</strong></p>

<p>India currently operates one spaceport with two launch pads in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh. This facility in Sriharikota has witnessed launches since the late 1970s. From 1993 onwards, this facility also saw the launch of PSLV and, thereafter, the GSLV and GSLV Mk3 rockets. Sriharikota offers various advantages as an ideal launch site. Situated on the East Coast and at a position nearer to the equator, rockets launched from here are aided by the additional velocity of Earth's West-East rotation. This effect of this rotation is felt closest to the equator and is almost nil at the earth's poles. This effect mainly benefits launches into equatorial orbits (orbits above the earth's equator).</p>

<p>Situated just adjacent to the sea, rockets launched from Sriharikota fly eastwards, soar above the sea. So, in the case of mishaps, the rocket and its debris would only fall on the sea, thus avoiding any major catastrophe.</p>

<p><strong>Why does India need a new spaceport?</strong></p>

<p>While Sriharikota is ideal for launching heavier rockets, a major challenge crops up when launching smaller rockets—such as ISRO's upcoming Small Satellite Launch Vehicle, which is meant for launching 500kg satellites. Sriharikota presents a challenge when rockets are launched into polar orbit (circling the Earth above the poles). While a rocket travels towards the South Pole from Sriharikota, the rocket would have to overfly the island nation of Sri Lanka. Given the immense risk of overflying a country, India's rockets are programmed to perform a manoeuvre to avoid the Lankan landmass. So, instead of flying in a straight line, the rocket follows a curved path and takes a turn.</p>

<p>In order to perform this manoeuvre, the rocket would have to burn a reasonable amount of fuel. While larger rockets can perform this manoeuvre without much impact on the rocket's payload carrying capacity, smaller rockets such as SSLV would lose a lot of fuel doing so. Losing fuel for the turn would mean that the rocket's payload carrying capacity is reduced. Hence, India had been looking for a location from where the smaller rockets could be launched in a straight line, without the risk of overflying Lanka.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Situated in Tamil Nadu's southern region, Kulasekarapattinam is a location in the Tuticorin district. When launching from here, the smaller rockets such as SSLV (which is expected to have its maiden flight in August 2022) and the rockets being built by Indian start-ups can save on fuel and fly a straight approach towards the pole. Speaking in the Upper House of the Indian Parliament, Dr Jitendra Singh, who serves as Minister of State for Science and Technology, revealed that the process of acquiring land was underway via the Government of Tamil Nadu. "The existing manpower is planned to be re-deployed initially to oversee the establishment of the essential facilities at the spaceport and also to carry out the critical launch-related activities," the Minister said. He also added that once the second spaceport nears completion, the manpower requirement for the operation and maintenance of facilities will be assessed. Estimates suggest that the second spaceport would be ready for launches by 2024 or 2025. India's Current Spaceport and What is special about it? India currently operates one spaceport with two launch pads in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh. This facility in Sriharikota has witnessed launches since the late 1970s. From 1993 onwards, this facility also saw the launch of PSLV and, thereafter, the GSLV and GSLV Mk3 rockets. Sriharikota offers various advantages as an ideal launch site. Situated on the East Coast and at a position nearer to the equator, rockets launched from here are aided by the additional velocity of Earth's West-East rotation. This effect of this rotation is felt closest to the equator and is almost nil at the earth's poles. This effect mainly benefits launches into equatorial orbits (orbits above the earth's equator). Situated just adjacent to the sea, rockets launched from Sriharikota fly eastwards, soar above the sea. So, in the case of mishaps, the rocket and its debris would only fall on the sea, thus avoiding any major catastrophe. Why does India need a new spaceport? While Sriharikota is ideal for launching heavier rockets, a major challenge crops up when launching smaller rockets—such as ISRO's upcoming Small Satellite Launch Vehicle, which is meant for launching 500kg satellites. Sriharikota presents a challenge when rockets are launched into polar orbit (circling the Earth above the poles). While a rocket travels towards the South Pole from Sriharikota, the rocket would have to overfly the island nation of Sri Lanka. Given the immense risk of overflying a country, India's rockets are programmed to perform a manoeuvre to avoid the Lankan landmass. While larger rockets can perform this manoeuvre without much impact on the rocket's payload carrying capacity, smaller rockets such as SSLV would lose a lot of fuel doing so. Losing fuel for the turn would mean that the rocket's payload carrying capacity is reduced. Hence, India had been looking for a location from where the smaller rockets could be launched in a straight line, without the risk of overflying Lanka. Situated in Tamil Nadu's southern region, Kulasekarapattinam is a location in the Tuticorin district. When launching from here, the smaller rockets such as SSLV (which is expected to have its maiden flight in August 2022) and the rockets being built by Indian start-ups can save on fuel and fly a straight approach towards the pole. <p>The Sri Lankan Navy claimed that the Wednesday intrusion was the fourth such poaching incident this month.</p>

<p>"The apprehended Indian fishermen and their trawler were brought to Talaimannar and arrangements are currently underway to hand over them to the Fisheries Inspector of Mannar," said the statement from the Lankan Navy.</p>

<p>They also claimed that the&nbsp;Sri Lanka Navy has seized and produced four Indian poaching trawlers and 29 Indian fishermen for legal proceedings, in July 2022 alone.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to Sri Lanka, their navy regularly conducts patrols and operations in Sri Lankan waters to prevent illegal fishing activities carried out by foreign fishermen in the country's waters. This is being done to protect the livelihood of its own local fishermen and the island nation's marine biodiversity.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The apprehended boat belongs to the Rameswaram region in southern Tamil Nadu state. The Indian fishermen claimed that they were fishing in the Indian waters and that the Lankan Navy transgressed into Indian waters before apprehending them.</p>

<p>This comes at a time when Lankan nationals, more than 120 of them, have illegally entered India via the porous sea route that separates India's southern state Tamil Nadu and Lanka's Northern Coast.</p>

<p>Since the economic crisis began to unfold in Sri Lanka in March this year, there has been a steady influx of Lankans from the lower strata of society, into India.&nbsp;</p>

<p>India has been at the forefront of providing aid and succour to the crisis-hit island nation, and has thus far offered aid worth over $3.8bn and continues to offer support.</p>
