Highlighting its vaccine diplomacy at the United Nations Security Council, India has pointed out how it is assisting the world community amid the COVID-19 pandemic that wrecked the world.

India's Deputy Permanent representative, Nagraj Naidu said, "As the largest vaccine-producing country of the world, we are fulfilling our commitment to make our vaccine production and delivery capacity available for the benefit of the entire humanity."

India has gifted India-Made vaccines to 7 countries and sent contractual supplies to 3 countries so far, with many being planned. New Delhi began supplying vaccines days after it began its mega countrywide vaccination drive. The country also trained medical representatives of 13 countries when it comes to the administration of vaccines and is supplying vaccines to WHO's COVAX facility.

During the intervention, India pointed out how amid the pandemic it upgraded the medical facilities of UN peacekeeping missions in Goma in DRC and Juba in South Sudan.

In a message to Islamabad, the Indian diplomat without taking name said, ''While countries like India have launched vaccination drives...there are countries which continue to foment terror and indulge in hate speech and widespread disinformation campaigns". He explained, "While we are working with the scientific community, medical fraternity, industry and academia to find solutions to COVID19, these globally recognized state sponsors of terrorism have used the pandemic to ramp up recruitment and infiltration activity to spread the venom of terror".

Important to remember, India assisted more than 150 countries with medical supplies during the pandemic. New Delhi has pledged US$15 million for GAVI or Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization.

Nagraj Naidu was speaking on the follow-up on the implementation of resolution 2532 (2020). The resolution calls for a cessation of hostilities to combat the covid pandemic.

Calling UN Secretary-General’s "noble" call for a global ceasefire "well-intentioned", the Deputy Permanent representative reiterated India's "call for a comprehensive ceasefire in Afghanistan."

At UNSC, India highlights its vaccine diplomacy

India has once again called for United Nations Security Council reforms, with permanent membership reflecting the "contemporary realities" and one that includes "adequate representation from all regions of the world".

Highlighting the present UNSC unable to deal with global challenges, India's envoy to UN TS Tirumurti said, "It is evident that inaction on our part is not without cost. The Security Council is being called upon to address increasingly complex issues of international peace and security" Elaborating, "Yet, it finds itself unable to act effectively, for it is lacking inclusivity of those who need to be there, and therefore lacking legitimacy and credibility."

The Indian envoy was speaking at the Informal meeting of the Intergovernmental Negotiations (IGN) on UNSC reforms. Established in 2008, the Intergovernmental Negotiations framework or IGN is a body of countries within the United Nations working for reforms, but its conversation remains informal. Pointing out to "impasse in the IGN", Tirumurti said, "What is clearly deliberate is preventing the IGN from following some basic ground rules of multilateral processes."

Countries like China, while claiming to back reforms, have been blocking IGN to follow basic rules of procedure and records. The process also lacks any "single draft outcome document" for negotiations. A normal UN process begins with the initial sharing of views, followed by written documentation provided by those stewarding the process, which is then the basis for transparent give-and-take negotiations through attributed additions, deletions or amendments.

India has called for "Immediate application" of UN General Assembly Rules of Procedure to the IGN Process and "outcome text" to capture the views and positions expressed by all delegations, with attributions. Additionally, operational changes have also been suggested--which includes, live broadcast/webcast of the proceedings.

Envoy Tirumurti said, "we simply cannot allow the IGN to continue to serve as a convenient smokescreen for a handful of reform naysayers" and the "success and continued relevance of the IGN will be measured by whether or not, we have a common text with attributed positions to base our future discussions".

The G4 nations comprising Brazil, Germany, India, and Japan, calling for the UN reforms also spoke at the meet. German Ambassador Christoph Heusgen to UN speaking on behalf of G4 retreated the call for single text for UN Reforms and application of rules of procedure of general assembly.

The Bangabandhu Bapu digital exhibition, jointly inaugurated by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina at December's virtual summit has opened in Delhi. The exhibition dedicated to the lives of India's father of the nation Mahatma Gandhi and Bangladesh's father of the nation Sheikh Mujibur Rahman is currently displayed at Delhi's Vigyan Bhawan.

It will be subsequently displayed in different locations in Bangladesh, the United Nations in New York and finally culminated in Kolkata in early 2022. The exhibition has 21 walls of information and over 100 points of digital engagement. Bangladesh High Commissioner to India Muhammad Imran and his officers visited the exhibition as well.

Speaking to WION, Birad Rajaram Yajnik, the curator of the exhibition told WION, "It's a digital exhibition which speaks the language of technology. It gives out the message of the youth today of the lives of the 2 great leaders. The exhibition acts as a catalyst and you come to know interesting things about the 2 great leaders."

Key points of interest of the exhibition are a "meeting wall" that displays the only photo in the world that has both Bangabandhu and Bapu in one frame, a robotic signature of both the leaders, the favourite music of the leaders. Historical moments like Mahatma Gandhi's salt march, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman speech of March 7, 1971 is another noteworthy installation.

The pain and suffering endured by the Indians and Bangladeshi people during the brutal use of force by General Dyer in Jallianwala Bagh in 1919 and the genocide perpetrated by the Pakistani army in 1971 have been digitally shown. The "genocide tunnel" shows the depiction, the experiences of the many Bangladeshis who suffered in the hands of the Pakistani army in 1971 war of liberation.

The exhibition comes at a time when Bangladesh celebrates its 50 years of Independence. Indian PM Modi will be visiting Dhaka in March to be part of the Independence year celebrations. In fact, this year's republic day celebration will see a 122-member strong contingent from Bangladesh's Armed forces taking part in the grand parade. This is only the third time in India’s history that any foreign military contingent has been invited to participate. An Indian Air force's Dakota, which took part in the war, will do a flypast while Navy's tableau will be dedicated to 1971 war and how the war at sea was won.

Adding, "It is a matter of great irony that the country where the most recent attack and demolition of a Hindu temple took place in a series of such attacks" and "where the rights of minorities are being emasculated is one of the co-sponsors of the resolution under the agenda item “Culture of Peace.”

December 2020 saw demolishing of a historic Hindu temple Karak in the country's northwest Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. The temple has been the target of attack in the past as well. It was demolished in 1997 and later reconstructed again in 2015.

The statement elaborated, "Pakistan with explicit support and connivance with the law enforcement agencies which, stood as mute spectators while the historic temple was being razed.".

It is not for the first time India had spoken about Pakistan's track record on the deteriorating situation of minorities. In fact, New Delhi has taken up several times abduction of Hindu, Sikh, Christian girls in the country by summoning Pakistani diplomats.

India statement saw a reiteration of "application of the principles of objectivity, non-selectivity and impartiality" to form the basis of discussions in the United Nations especially on the issue of religion and the top body "should not take sides and as long as such selectivity exists, the world can never truly foster a culture of peace."

Pakistan has several times raised Islamophobia at the UN but maintained a deafening silence when it comes to discrimination faced by Hindus, and others, particularly on its own soil.
