Wuhan has recorded 50,340 coronavirus infections ever&nbsp;since the first case was officially reported&nbsp;in the city on December 31. The death toll due to the virus in the Chinese city currently stands at 3,869. Wuhan&nbsp;recently emerged from a 76-day lockdown even as authorities continue to keep a close watch.

Mumbai has recorded 1,855 deaths so far with 23,693 patients having recovered from the virus, according to Mumbai health officials. On Wednesday, the city had recorded the highest-ever 97 deaths in a single-day as&nbsp;the number of infected cases crossed the 1,500-mark in a day for the first time since May 30.

Wuhan had recently witnessed a growing number of asymptomatic cases prompting the city government to undertake virus testing of all its 11.2 million residents last month.&nbsp;

Mumbai city officials said there were 26,897 active COVID- 19 cases with 749 new suspected coronavirus patients admitted in hospitals in the last 24 hours.

The health officials added that out of the 97 deaths, 80 patients had co-morbidities, meaning they had pre-existing health conditions.

In Maharashtra's Pune there were 435 new coronavirus cases and seven deaths in the last 24 hours with the total number of cases rising to 10,394 and death toll rising to 449 in the city.

After Japan postponed the Olympics due to the coronavirus pandemic, Thomas Bach, president of the International Olympic Committee(IOC) said that he was looking at ways to "simplify the organisation of the Games".

The Games are now due to start on July 23, 2021. Bach however said there was "no timeline or deadline" for the Games, since &nbsp;"issues evolve by the day, sometimes by the hour".

The Olympic president said the committee was looking at "reducing the complexity of the games" in order to save costs for Japan which has been hit by coroanvirus with the country slipping into a recession for the first time since 2015.

The country's MPs passed a budget few days back worth nearly $300 billion handing out subsidies for small businesses and cash for medical workers as the nation continued to grapple with the virus.

Japan had recently ordered easing of the lockdown but PM Shinzo Abe cautioned against rise in cases with capital Tokyo the epicenter of the virus.

Yoshiro Mori, president of the Tokyo organising committee backed&nbsp;calls by the IOC chief, saying: "Olympic Games used to be conducted in extravagance and&nbsp;splendour. But the point is that in the face of COVID-19, would that kind of Games be accepted?"

IOC's Sports Director, Christophe Dubi, said that "sometimes we overplan and underconsume" asserting that ,"We will not let any stone unturned. The result will be positive."

India's national capital which has seen a spurt in COVID-19 cases in the past month has witnessed an&nbsp;average of 1,250 coronavirus cases daily.

The Delhi government data revealed the city had reached 10,000 cases in 79 days earlier, however, it progressed to the 20,000-mark in just 13 days.

On May 18 there were 10,054 COVID-19 cases in the city which shot up to 19,844 in the next 13 days.

The death toll also increased from 160 on May 18 to 473 on May 31. The death toll due to the virus has now reached to over 870 in Delhi.

The capital's first cases was reported on March 1 after a businessman returning from Italy was diagnosed with the virus.

The government data showed there has been daily spike of over 1,000 cases since June 2 in the national capital. On May 28, Delhi had recorded over 1,000 cases for the first time.

There were reports of clashes between protesters and police in some areas in Seattle. The demonstrators have been calling for the resignation of mayor Jenny Durkan as they marched from Capitol Hill to Seattle City Hall.

The Supreme Court on Thursday refused to entertain pleas of various political parties challenging the Centre's decision not to grant 50 per cent reservation to OBCs as per Tamil Nadu law in medical seats surrendered by the state in the All India Quota for under-graduate, post-graduate and dental courses in 2020-21.

A bench comprising Justices L Nageswara Rao, Krishna Murari and S Ravindra Bhat asked lawyers for Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, Vaiko, Anbumani Ramadoss, CPM,, Tamil Nadu Congress Committee and CPI to approach the Madras High Court with their pleas.

"You should withdraw this and go to the Madras High Court,"&nbsp;the bench said, adding that the liberty was granted to the political parties to do that.

The political parties have challenged the decision of Centre not granting 50 per cent reservation to OBC's in seats surrendered by Tamil Nadu in the All India Quota for under graduate, post graduate medical and dental courses in current academic session.

DMK, in its plea, had said that it was opposing the denial of implementation of 50 per cent OBC policy of the state, other than in central government institutions.

It said the Medical Council of India (MCI) regulations clearly contemplate adherence to state reservation laws while filling up of the seats.

The party said that the All India Quota seats are contributed by states surrendering seats in the government and private medical and dental colleges as per the MCI regulations.

DMK had sought ad-interim injunction restraining the Respondents from proceeding further with All India Counselling for PG seats pursuant to the NEET-PG 2020 results without following the 50 per cent reservation for OBC quota in Tamil Nadu pending disposal of the plea.

The party also sought direction for calling of the records of the Respondent pertaining to the Result of NEET-PG, 2020 published on May 9, 2020 by the National Board of Examinations relating to the filling up of the All India Quota and quashing of the same

On Wednesday, the health ministry had reported 9,985 new coronavirus cases and 279 deaths in the country while on Tuesday there were 9,987 new COVID-19&nbsp;cases.

Maharashtra's Pune reported 435 new coronavirus cases with seven deaths in the last 24 hours with the total number of cases rising to 10,394. The death toll has climbed to 449 in the city.

In Telangana, 191 more coronavirus cases were reported with eight deaths with the total number of cases in the state rising to 4.111. The state health department said there were&nbsp;156 deaths due to the virus with 2,138 active cases.

On a net basis, foreign institutional investors sold equities worth Rs 919.26 crore in the capital market on Wednesday, provisional exchange data showed.

The US central bank on Wednesday cut its benchmark short-term rate to near zero, and said nearly all its policymakers foresee no rate hike through 2022.

The state health department reported fresh cases in Bharatpur, Jaipur, Nagaur, Sikar, Jhunjhunu, Alwar and Kota. Rajasthan's capital Jaipur has been the hardest hit due to the virus with &nbsp;2,500 cases and 118 deaths.

Jodhpur accounts for the second-highest number of coronavirus cases with 1,944 infections and 26 deaths. According to the state government&nbsp;over 8,000 people have been discharged after recovering from the virus.

Petrol prices were hiked by 40 paise a litre and diesel prices by 45 paise&nbsp;as India's PUS's ended&nbsp;82-day freeze in rate revision since March.

Petrol in Delhi will now cost Rs 73.40 per litre and diesel rate will now be 71. 62 per litre. It is the fourth time rates have been revised since Sunday.

On Tuesday, the government had hiked petrol prices by Rs 54 a litre and diesel by 58 paise, the prices petrol has now gone up by Rs 2.14 a litre since Sunday with diesel prices becoming dearer by Rs 2.23 for the consumer.

Global oil prices across the world have rebounded after falling to historic lows due to the coronavirus crisis. However, on Wednesday global prices fell to $40.59 a barrel after a sharp rise in crude and fuel stockpiles in the United States.

According to two intergovernmental agency report, governments subsidised fossil fuels in 2019 up to nearly half a trillion dollars, with the IEA pointing out that subsidies for fossil fuel consumption declined 27 per cent, compared to 2018 due to lower oil and gas prices.

Amid the crisis, the British energy giant BP said it plans to lay off close to 10,000 jobs.

In an interaction with former star Australian pacer Brett Lee on social media platform 100 MB, the batting great spoke about the challenges of using only sweat and why the use of saliva was a necessity to shine the ball.

"In Test cricket, suddenly if the surfaces are not good, the standard of playing I feel drops down. And above all the game slows down because, the batters knows that if I don't play a stupid shot here, no one can get me out and the bowler knows, on this surface I have to be patient," Tendulkar said.

"But why not then to get the game moving, have a new ball after every 45-50 or 55 overs because in ODI cricket we have to play only 50 overs, and you have two new balls there, so literally 25 overs, so that's it," said Tendulkar.

Tendulkar compared his proposal to day-night ODI cricket.

"So here in Test cricket, if you are not going to allow saliva, and sometimes you won't sweat as much depending on the climate where you are playing, it could be a lot like day/night one-dayers," the maestro said.

"In ODI cricket, bowling when conditions are dry in day/night match and bowling second when there is lot of dew on the ground, so on paper the conditions and rules are exactly the same, but on field conditions are totally different, it's chalk and cheese," he said.
