US Election 2024: How NASA Astronauts Vote from Space Aboard ISS

Elections are brewing up in the US and NASA astronaut Sunita Williams is set to vote from space. Say, what? Is it even possible? The answer is yes, and this is not the first time that NASA astronauts will be voting from space.

The voting process for astronauts in space has been in place since 1997 when the Texas Legislature passed a bill allowing NASA astronauts to cast ballots from orbit.

The voting process takes place through NASA's Space Communication and Navigation (SCaN) Program, in which votes are cast in space, and travel through NASA's Near Space Network (NSN) to Earth.

Sunita Williams will first complete her Federal Post Card Application to request an absentee ballot. Once received, Williams will fill out the electronic ballot on the ISS computer system.

This leafy green vegetable is an excellent source of potassium, iron and calcium and can be added to a variety of dishes.

The ballot then will be securely transferred to the Mission Control Center at Johnson Space Center in Houston. From Houston, the encrypted ballot will be sent to the appropriate county clerk for processing.

Only Williams and the county clerk will have access to the ballot to ensure the integrity of the vote.

Williams will join a select group of space-based voters, but David Wolf was the first American to vote from space while aboard the Mir Space Station. Kate Rubins most recently voted from the ISS during the 2020 elections.

7 Desk Exercises to Burn Belly Fat While Sitting

Sit up straight in your chair, keep your knees together, and lift one leg at a time, holding it parallel to the floor for a few seconds before lowering. Repeat with the other leg. It engages the lower abs and strengthens your core.

Sit on the edge of your chair, lean back slightly, and place your hands on the sides of the chair for support. Bring both knees toward your chest, hold for a second, then extend them straight. It targets the lower belly muscles.

Sit up straight, cross your arms over your chest, and twist your torso to the right, hold for a second, then twist to the left. It strengthens the oblique muscles on the sides of your waist.

While sitting upright, place your hands behind your head. Engage your core and lean forward as if you're trying to bring your chest to your thighs. Sit back up and repeat. This exercise works the upper and middle abdominal muscles.

Extend your legs out straight under the desk. Reach down with one hand and try to touch the opposite foot, then switch sides. It engages your core and helps improve flexibility.

Sit on the edge of your chair with your hands gripping the sides for balance. Lift your legs and move them in a circular motion as if you're pedalling a bicycle. It targets the entire core while also engaging your legs.

Sit straight and exhale fully. Now suck your belly in as if trying to touch your navel to your spine. Hold for 5-10 seconds, then relax. It strengthens the core and improves posture.

Oct 7 Attack Anniversary: October 7 marks the one-year anniversary of the brutal killings and abducting of hundreds of Israelis by Hamas militants. On this day, the world entered into a new era of the ever-going Israel-Palestine conflict. It’s been a year since the attacks; many retaliatory measures have been taken since then, new players have entered into the conflict- and the world fears a looming full-blown war.

On Oct 7, several Israelis were partying at the Nova Music Festival, when Palestinian-militant group Hamas launched attacks on the civilian crowd. A series of coordinated armed incursions were made from the Gaza Strip into the Gaza Envelope of southern Israel, marking the first such invasion of Israeli territory since the 1948 Arab-Israeli War.

The attack also coincided with the Jewish religious holiday Simchat Torah. Hamas named this group of attacks Operation Al-Aqsa Flood, while in Israel they are referred to as Black Sabbath or Simchat Torah Massacre.

A barrage of at least 4,300 rockets was launched against Israel, along with vehicle-transported and powered paraglider incursions into Israel. Hamas also breached the Gaza-Israel barrier, attacking military bases and massacring civilians in 21 communities, including Be’eri, Kfar Aza, Nir Oz, Netiv Haasara and Alumim.

As per IDF, some 6000 Hamas militants breached the border in 119 places and broke into Israel, including 3,800 from the “elite Nukhba forces.” In total, 1,140 people were killed- 695 Israeli civilians, 71 foreign nations and 373 members of the security forces. 364 civilians were killed and many more wounded while attending the Nova music festival.

In a path-breaking development, India's Supreme Court on Thursday (Oct 3) banned all caste-based discrimination in Indian jails, terming them as “unconstitutional.” The court calls for immediate reforms across all states and Union Territories (UTs) against the various jail manual provisions like scavenging and cleaning by the marginalised inmates, as this violates their right to dignity and equality.

The verdict was delivered by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dhananjaya Y Chandrachud, specifically addressing the entrenched discriminatory practices against marginalised communities, including scheduled castes (SC), scheduled tribes (ST) and denotified tribes (DNTs) in Indian prisons.

“The right to live with dignity extends even to the incarcerated. Not providing dignity to prisoners is a relic of the colonisers and pre-colonial mechanisms, where oppressive systems were designed to dehumanise and degrade those under the control of the State,” the SC bench said.

These discriminatory provisions are part of the pre-colonial-era Prisons Act of 1894, but they continue in independent India despite manuals and Acts framed by the Centre as recently as last year, the apex court found.

“The rule that a prisoner of a high caste be allowed to refuse food cooked by other castes is a legal sanction by the state authorities to untouchability and the caste system,” the bench, which included Justice J B Pardiwala and Justice Manoj Misra, said.

The provision that food is to be cooked by prisoners from a “suitable caste” allows jail officials to discriminate against the marginalised castes, it said.

“We therefore find that the impugned provisions are violative of Articles 14 (equality), 15 (non-discrimination), 17 (untouchability), 21 (life and liberty), and 23 (prohibition against forced labour),” the SC bench said.

The bench also asked the central government to make the necessary changes to the Model Prison Manual 2016 and the Model Prisons and Correctional Services Act 2023 within three months.

India's Supreme Court scraps 'unconstitutional' laws that promote caste-based discrimination in jails

The massive asteroid that is believed to have ended the era of dinosaurs when it crashed into Earth some 66 million years ago was not the only culprit, researchers found recently.

After performing detailed scans of an underwater crater off the coast of Guinea in West Africa, researchers discovered that it was created when another large asteroid smashed into Earth around the same time at the end of the Cretaceous period.

The violent collision between 65 million and 67 million years ago produced a crater more than five miles across, the scans reveal. Scientists estimate that the asteroid measured a quarter of a mile wide struck Earth at nearly 45,000 miles per hour.

Though the other space rock was much smaller than the asteroid that caused the mass extinction of dinosaurs, it was large enough to leave scars on the face of the planet.

“The new images paint a picture of the catastrophic event,” said Dr Uisdean Nicholson, a marine geologist at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, who first discovered the Nadir crater in 2022. At the time, the details of the impact were unclear.

Impact of another massive collision

Scientists devised 3D seismic imaging to map the crater rim on the Earth to further understand about the impact of the second collision. The team also analysed the scars that lie 30 metres beneath the ocean floor.

“There are around 20 confirmed marine craters worldwide, and none of them has been captured in anything close to this level of detail,” said Nicholson. “It’s exquisite.”

Researchers found that the collision set off intense tremors that liquefied beneath the ocean floor causing faults to form below the seabed. This impact triggered landslides with visible traces thousands of square miles beyond the crater rim and also created a tsunami more than 800 metres high that would have travelled across the Atlantic.

The details of the research are published in Nature Communications Earth & Environment.

The team of researchers though cannot pinpoint the exact location where the asteroid struck the Earth, the discovery of the crater and its approximate age has itself prompted speculation that it may have belonged to a cluster of dinosaurs at the end of the Cretaceous period.

“The closest humans have come to seeing something like this is the 1908 Tunguska event, when a 50-metre asteroid entered Earth’s atmosphere and exploded in the skies above Siberia,” Nicholson said.

Massive asteroid that eradicated dinosaurs when it crashed into Earth was not alone: Researchers

Radical Islamic preacher Zakir Naik recently stirred a controversy when he boycotted a group of orphan girls when he was invited as a guest at an orphanage in Pakistan on Wednesday (Oct 2). The video of him getting restless when a group of orphaned girls arrive on stage went viral with Pakistani people schooling him on his “misogynistic behaviour.”

Naik was of the opinion that these girls were “na-mahram” to him and hence he would not interact with them in any way.

In Islam, the term na-mahram is used to refer to an unmarried woman who is not directly blood-related. Naik said, “You cannot touch them or call them your daughters.”

When the organiser made an announcement for the felicitation of the girls, he referred to them as Naik’s “daughters,” which the Islamic preacher deemed inappropriate.

Radical Islamic preacher Zakir Naik recently stirred a controversy when he boycotted a group of orphan girls when he was invited as a guest at an orphanage in Pakistan on Wednesday (Oct 2). The video of him getting restless when a group of orphaned girls arrive on stage went viral with Pakistani people schooling him on his “misogynistic behaviour.” Naik was of the opinion that these girls were “na-mahram” to him and hence he would not interact with them in any way. In Islam, the term na-mahram is used to refer to an unmarried woman who is not directly blood-related. Naik said, “You cannot touch them or call them your daughters.” Also Read | Letters from Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammed threaten to blow up 8 railway stations in Rajasthan In the viral video, Naik can be seen walking off stage as soon as the women walk up to him at the event hosted by the Pakistan Sweet Home Foundation, which supports orphaned girls. When the organiser made an announcement for the felicitation of the girls, he referred to them as Naik’s “daughters,” which the Islamic preacher deemed inappropriate. Milk Myth: Are Strong Bones Really Built by Drinking Milk

The idea that drinking milk is essential for strong bones has been widely promoted, but recent research suggests the "milk myth" may oversimplify the relationship between dairy consumption and bone health.

A 2014 study published in the British Medical Journal found that high milk intake in adults did not significantly lower fracture risk and, in some cases, was associated with higher mortality rates in women.

Many plant-based foods like leafy greens, nuts, seeds and fortified plant milk provide calcium without the potential downsides of dairy, such as lactose intolerance or ethical concerns around industrial dairy farming.

Populations with traditionally low dairy intake, like those in parts of Asia, often have lower rates of osteoporosis, suggesting that bone health is achievable without high dairy consumption.

More than the calcium content, maintaining proper vitamin D levels might be more crucial for bone health. Vitamin D can be obtained from sunlight exposure and foods like fatty fish, fortified cereals and supplements.

Bone strength is influenced by many factors, including physical activity, genetics and overall diet. A well-rounded diet rich in fruits, vegetables and whole grains can promote bone health without relying solely on dairy.

Sandesh: Craft This Bengali Delight for Sweet Pujo Celebration

Sandesh is a quintessential Bengali sweet that holds a special place during festivals like Durga Pujo. It’s a simple yet delicious dessert made primarily from paneer (chhena), sugar, and cardamom.

If making paneer at home, heat 1 litre of milk and curdle it by adding lemon juice or vinegar. Once the milk separates, strain the chhena in a muslin cloth, rinse with cold water, and squeeze out the excess water. Hang it for 30 minutes to remove moisture.

Transfer the chhena onto a flat surface or plate. Using the palm of your hand, knead the chhena for 8-10 minutes until it becomes smooth and soft without any lumps. It should form a dough-like consistency.

In a non-stick pan, add the kneaded chhena and cook on low heat. After a minute, add the powdered sugar and cardamom powder. Stir constantly. Cook until the mixture starts to leave the sides of the pan (around 5-7 minutes).

Let the mixture cool slightly. Once cool enough to handle, take small portions and shape them into flat round discs or small balls. You can use moulds to give them traditional designs. Garnish with saffron strands or chopped nuts.

Refrigerate the Sandesh for about 30 minutes to set. Serve chilled or at room temperature for a delightful end to your Pujo feast!
