A bizarre bottomless pool called 'Hot Tub of Despair' is hidden beneath the Gulf of Mexico and it is so deadly that it can kill anything which enters it instantly.

This 100-foot (30.5-metre)-wide pond is filled with a toxic mixture of hydrogen sulphide, ultra-salty water, and methane, and only a handful of creatures can survive in it.

The researchers discovered the toxic pond in 2015 and found that its banks were filled with preserved corpses of creatures who had tried to swim in the warm waters.

The pool is said to be present more than 1,000 metre (3,300 foot) below the Gulf of Mexico.

How did researchers discover the 'Hot Tub of Despair'?

The bottomless pond was discovered by the Ocean Exploration Trust when they were investigating the 'cold seeps' in the depths of the Gulf of Mexico.

In this region, dense hydrocarbons, which are the basis of oil and petrol, release from beneath the seafloor and enter the water column.

Vast layers of salt are formed by cold seeps, which are created when ancient oceans evaporate.

With the shift and crack in salt layers, the resulting gaps permit compounds, which are generally trapped beneath the ground, to escape.

Sometimes, when the cracks are formed, huge amounts of salt are dissolved by water present in the sediment layers to form a brine that is four times saltier than seawater.

Because the brine is so dense, it remains on the floor of the ocean and fails to get easily mixed with the surrounding salt water.

In places where the welling up of saltwater takes place, strange underwater lakes and ponds like 'Hot Tub of Despair' are formed by 'brine pools'.

The researchers, with the help of a remote-operated vehicle named Hercules, found a steep, thin wall, which was made of deposited minerals and live mussels, and rose three metres above the seafloor.

It was found filled with 12 foot (3.7 metre) deep layer of brine, which was present above a 'bottomless' pond of liquidised mud.

The precision-laser aerial surveys have revealed how advanced was the ghost city of Nan Madol when it existed and how it now sits hidden in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

The precision-laser aerial surveys have revealed how advanced was the ghost city of Nan Madol when it existed and how it now sits hidden in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Also known as 'the Venice of the Pacific', this megalithic stone city has sometimes been compared to mythic Atlantis and now researchers are putting all their energy into uncovering the ruins of Nan Madol as they adopt plans to preserve it as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The aerial surveys, which have been conducted using LiDAR or 'Light Detection and Ranging' laser-mapping, uncovered "a sophisticated and extensive landscape of cultivation features hidden under Temwen Island's vegetation." Also Read: Not Mesopotamia, but the world's oldest city existed in THIS country, hints evidence This discovery is rewriting the history of Pacific Island cultures and explaining how societies, which were believed to have depended on natural tropical bounty and subsistence fishing, actually engaged in sophisticated agricultural planning. The international team of researchers noted that "LiDAR can reveal whole archaeological landscapes hidden under heavy vegetation. That has led to its comparison with radiocarbon dating as a groundbreaking technological advance in archaeology." Here's what researchers found in ghost city Scientists, headed by Baltimore's Cultural Site Research and Management (CSRM) Foundation, mapped a network of irrigation terraces which once supplied freshwater across Nan Madol and in its dense tropical foliage where more ruins remain hidden. Archaeologists believe that Nan Madol was a prominent city from 1100 to 1628 AD and its decline started with the fall of the local Saudeleur monarchs in the 17th century. Head of the project Dr. Douglas Comer said, "The consensus among archaeologists has been that there was no intensification of agriculture in Micronesia by means of formal field systems." Dr Comer's team, while working with the local College of Micronesia, along with Stanford, Sandia National Laboratories and others, has questioned the older notions on which culture thrived on fermented 'breadfruit' (Artocarpus altilis). Scientists discovered a sudden bulging in the 'Mountain of God' volcano and warned people against an impending eruption.

The Ol Doinyo Lengai volcano - situated in the north of Tanzania - has been swelling because of the flow of magma beneath the surface of the Earth.

Throughout the 20th century, the 9,718-foot-tall volcano has become active after every 20 to 40 years. It last erupted in 2007 and spread the ashes across more than 10 miles from the site. This eruption led to the evacuation of thousands of people from the areas close to the volcano.

Scientists have come up with a new and innovative plan to tackle climate change, which is filling the giant Pacific Ocean with iron. This technique is known as ocean iron fertilisation (OIF) and in this process powdered form of iron is filled on the surface of the sea to stimulate the growth of a marine plant 'phytoplankton'.

This marine plant takes in carbon dioxide and traps it in the ocean. According to computer models, if two million tonnes of iron is released into the sea every year, the process will remove around 50 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide by the year 2100. As per the plan of the researchers, iron will be released across 3,800 square miles northeast Pacific by 2026. Currently, scientists at the non-profit Exploring Ocean Iron Solutions (ExOIS) have been looking into the idea of spreading iron sulfate in areas where nutrients are scarce. The scarcity is high in the northeast Pacific Ocean which is spread from the western coast of North and South America to the eastern coast of Asia and upward to the Arctic. According to scientists, the distribution of iron in these areas will increase the growth of phytoplankton and decrease carbon dioxide from the atmosphere for the years ahead. Also Read: Are deep seas on Earth hiding alien life amid 'dark oxygen'? Study hints so The researchers have suggested that distributing iron sulfate in the ocean will help in limiting global warming to 2.7 degrees Fahrenheit. Filling of iron may create 'dead zones' in the sea: Experts Experts have warned that iron can lead to the depletion of nutrients required for marine life and kill some of the food webs of the ocean. Scientists are now finding a way to turn iron into powder form so that it can be dissolved in water easily and then get dispersed in targeted areas of the ocean. Watch: Ocean 2024: Drills held from the Pacific to the Baltics and Caspian sea Even though the process has achieved some success in earlier experiments, the researchers have expressed their concern regarding how the spread of iron can negatively impact parts of the ecosystem of the ocean. "Most likely [iron fertilisation] will affect something that we don't really understand yet," said deep-sea expert Lisa Levin, while speaking to Scientific American. Scientists have been concerned that the spread of iron can create "dead zones" which permit algal blooms to grow that inhale all the oxygen in the water and kill other living things. In a new study, the researchers have observed that the grey matter of the brain is probably shrinking by 80 per cent during pregnancy and creating "permanent etchings".

The researchers made the discovery when a pregnant neuroscientist went through two dozen brain scans during her pregnancy phase and then for the next two years postpartum.

Grey matter is one kind of tissue present in the brain and spinal cord (central nervous system) which is important for humans to function normally.

After the pregnancy came to an end, it was observed that the woman was able to regain some grey matter. The grey matter regained included the cell bodies of neurons and the connections present between them.

Co-senior author of the study and associate professor of psychological and brain sciences at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) Emily Jacobs said that the grey-matter volume in the affected brain areas of pregnant women decreased by 4 per cent on average.

The window fitter didn't give it much attention while taking it as a mild irritation and continued with his daily business.

However, after a few days, he became sick and saw that the bite started growing into a giant hole.

He was taken to the hospital where it was revealed in the tests that he is suffering from necrotising fasciitis, which is also called as the 'flesh-eating disease'.

In this rare infection, the wound in the skin and soft tissues becomes infected with bacteria.

"On arrival at Sharm El Sheikh, we collected our belongings and made our way to the pharmacy for some antibiotics or something to help with the sickness. They prescribed a couple of things and the following day we went to hospital to be prescribed the same medication," he added.

"The next two days started to get worse so we went to a different hospital in Hadaba where straight away I had blood tests and ultrasound scans. Then we waited a couple of hours for the doctor to check the results. He called us in saying it was a good job we had come in because the bite was from either a false widow or a brown recluse spider," the window fitter stated.

Hunt said that the medics had informed him if he had failed to seek medical help on time, he could have died.

"If I hadn't been to the hospital for a second examination within six to 10 days, I would be dead. They haven't given me an all-clear date yet as the wound is still open and I have to have it packed every couple of days," he said.

A landlord has come under severe criticism in Beijing for the insensitive action of handing an eviction notice to a tenant who is going through late-stage cancer.

The step was taken by the landlord because he was worried about losing the value of the property if the tenant died of illness.

As reported by Red Star News, the tenant had rented the flat because it had a convenient location near a hospital.

However, the landlord has claimed that he had rented the flat below market value at 5,500 yuan (about US$770) per month because he was looking to sell the property actively.

According to the lease agreement, the owner had asked the tenant and her husband to allow potential buyers to take a look around the house. However, the couple were supposed to stay in the house till mid-November, as per the contract.

On September 4, the landlord gave a formal notice to the couple and asked them to vacate the house within a week.

The landlord said that he asked the couple to evict the house after seeing the baldness of the woman and enquiring about her health.

Hearing about cancer, the landlord feared that in case of the tenant's death, the value of the property would go down and the flat would be perceived as a “haunted house”.

The landlord, along with the eviction notice, appealed to the tenants to sign an agreement which stated that the latter would compensate him in case the market value of the house went down because of their occupancy. However, the couple refused to sign the agreement and said that they would not vacate the house till the landlord provided compensation for terminating the lease.

The incident was shared on social media and received comments from various people, some of whom criticised the landlord.

There will be a supermoon treat for the skygazers next week as the Harvest supermoon will rise in the sky on September 17 (Tuesday).

The supermoon will appear 14 per cent larger and will also go through a partial lunar eclipse when a part of it will come under the shadow of Earth.

It will be a spectacular sight as a part of the full moon will appear darker and the lunar surface will look awashed in blood-red colour because the sunlight will reach it only after passing through the atmosphere of Earth.

Why does a supermoon occur?

A supermoon appears in the sky when the moon reaches its closest distance to Earth in the planet's elliptical orbit, which is called the 'perigee' and is 226,000 miles away.

Generally, the moon is 238,900 miles away from Earth. Because of the closer location, the moon appears 30 per cent brighter in comparison to when it is farther away.

The moon reaches its perigee after orbiting around Earth after every 27 days, however, supermoons only occur nearly three to four times per year.

The term 'supermoon' is not present in an astronomical dictionary, however, the term is used for the full moon when it reaches close to at least '90 per cent of perigee,' as per NASA's website.

NASA further stated that the 2024 Harvest moon coincides with a lunar eclipse, which takes place when the natural satellite is going through a full moon phase and has an annual frequency of four-to-seven times every year.

The partial lunar eclipse will occur with the supermoon on September 17 and will witness imperfect alignment of the sun, the Earth, and the moon. During this phase, the moon will pass through the umbra of Earth.

When will the supermoon appear in the sky?

The supermoon will be visible in the sky around 7 pm ET and the partial eclipse will start at 8:41 pm ET and last until just after midnight. The eclipse will reach its peak at 10:44 p.m. ET.

The astronomers and photographers are advised to use a standard smartphone and capture the supermoon by reducing exposure, zooming in to enlarge, disabling flash, and activating night mode.

Also Read: Supermoon treat! The cat, which was unofficially the world's oldest, died at the age of 33 in her home in Norwich, Norfolk.

The cat was born in 1991 and was the unofficial holder of the title of ‘world’s oldest cat’ as according to the Guinness Book of World Records, the oldest cat is a 28-year-old named Flossie from Kent, who was born in 1995.

The owner of the cat, Lila, had adopted Rosie when she was a kitten.

Reacting to her demise, she said, “I miss her so much. She wasn’t very well and one day she just walked into the hallway of the house, laid down and passed away. There were lots of good memories though and I’m happy we had our time together.”

Rosie was generally sleeping at the window of the house and loved eating.

When the cat was alive, Lila had said, "She’s quite a character. Rosie sleeps by the window all day and, like clockwork, she will have some food and use the litter tray. There’s no need for an alarm clock. All she does is eat, sleep, use the litter tray and repeat."

“I often have to check if she’s still alive and breathing. I’m worried about the day she crosses over the rainbow bridge. She’ll leave a big void. I’ll miss her when she goes. But I’ll never have her put down," she said.

The workers made a chilling discovery of a vampire grave while uprooting the trees in the garden of a Cathedral complex in Poland. In the grave, they found the skeleton of a sick child, which was associated with the myths of vampires.

The remains of a decapitated child were discovered around the garden fence and heavy blocks were placed over it. According to the reports of Archeology Mag, there are no historical records which show signs of a cemetery.

Archaeologist with the Lublin Voivodeship Conservator of Monuments, Dr Stanislaw Golub, started an excavation at the site.

Speaking about the excavation, lead archaeologist Dr. Stanisław Gołub said, “The burial clearly shows signs of anti-vampire practices, which were aimed at stopping the dead from rising again."

According to Catholic Herald, more vampiric burials have been discovered in Poland in the past, which included the remains of a woman who had a scythe across her throat and wore a padlock on her toe.

In another funerary rite, the head of a child was found removed and the skull was kept face down to ensure that the dead does not rise again.
