The memo stated all staff members "must always maintain personal cleanliness and hygiene."

It added that "eyelashes should appear natural, avoiding extreme length and volume, while facial hair must be trimmed and neatly maintained."

It further stated that "visible tattoos" were not allowed and "must be covered by clothing or waterproof makeup."

"Bandages are not suitable for coverage of tattoos at any time. Fingernails must be clean, neat, trimmed and, if polished, chip-free. All nails must be the same colour. No neon colours, multi-colour, adornments, glitter, hand-painted designs, or airbrushed nails permitted," the memo read.

"Hair touching or longer than the shoulder must be pulled completely back and secured away from the eyes, such as in a ponytail, bun, braid, etc. If hair is up (i.e., in a ponytail), and still extends past your mid-back, it must be pinned up," the memo stated.

'Earrings may be gold, silver, white pearl, or clear diamond/diamond-like studs only,' it urged. "No hoop earrings. Ear stretching gauges are not permitted," it added.

Delta Airlines issues shocking 'proper underwear' memo for flight attendants

In a new research carried out by Binghamton University, the scientists discovered a scuba-diving tropical lizard called the Anolis aquaticus, which can breathe underwater and release special bubbles through its nostrils that cling to its head.

In the observational study published in Biology Letters, senior author Lindsey Swierk stated that water anoles have been well-documented.

“We know that they can stay underwater for a really long time, that they’re pulling oxygen from this bubble of air,” said Swierk.

“We didn’t know whether there was actually any functional role for this bubble in respiration. Is it something that lizards do that is just a side effect of their skin’s properties or a respiratory reflex, or is this bubble actually allowing them to stay underwater longer than they would, say, without a bubble?" she added.

Here's how researchers discovered tropical lizards

Swierk explained how an experiment was carried out to understand the intriguing mechanism of the tropical lizards.

She said that the anoles are “kind of like the chicken nuggets of the forest.”

The water anoles need to avoid the danger that comes from the skies and the ground. For this, they need to develop an impressive strategy which allows them to push themselves in the water till the time there is no threat.

In a press release, Swierk said that camouflaged water anole is able to hide underwater with the help of air bubbles.

Swierk has not been able to confirm if the bubble was a by-product of a respiratory function or if the lizards can breathe underwater.

Emollient was applied to the skin of the lizard to stop the bubble from sticking to its head to understand the role of this air bubble.

“Lizard skin is hydrophobic. Typically, that allows air to stick very tightly to the skin and permits this bubble to form. But when you cover the skin with an emollient, air no longer sticks to the skin surface, so the bubbles can’t form,” said Swierk.

“This is really significant because this is the first experiment that truly shows the adaptive significance of bubbles. Rebreathing bubbles allow lizards to stay underwater longer. Before, we suspected it – we saw a pattern – but we didn’t actually test if it served a functional role,” she added.

The study further stated that air bubbles help the reptile stay underwater for a longer duration.

"Anoles are kind of like the chicken nuggets of the forest. Birds eat them, snakes eat them. So by jumping in the water, they can escape a lot of their predators, and they remain very still underwater. They're pretty well camouflaged underwater as well, and they just stay underwater until that danger passes. We know that they can stay underwater at least about 20 minutes, but probably longer," she said.

NASA found the 'most lunar-like' place on Earth to prepare the crew for the first journey to the moon after more than half a century as part of the Artemis II.

The country chosen for this task was Iceland which has rugged terrain similar to the lunar surface.

NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, and Christina Koch, along with Canadian Space Agency (CSA) astronaut Jeremy Hansen and backup crew members NASA astronaut Andre Douglas and CSA astronaut Jenni Gibbons hiked across the country.

"Apollo astronauts said Iceland was one of the most lunar-like training locations that they went to in their training," said Cindy Evans, Artemis geology training lead at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston, in a statement.

With this announcement, the device entered the group of cutting-edge medical technologies which have been designed for treating serious health conditions.

What is Neuralink’s Blindsight?

Blindsight is an attempt made by Neuralink to restore the lost vision of people, even in those cases where they have lost both eyes as well as their optic nerve.

Speaking about the device on X, Musk said that this breakthrough will “enable even those who have lost both eyes and their optic nerve to see.”

However, no announcement has been made by Neuralink on the timeline for human trials.

The Blindsight device will work by implanting a microelectrode array directly inside the brain's visual cortex.

The neurons are activated by the array on the basis of input from an external camera which creates a visual image.

In theory, this technology can also provide a type of artificial vision for people who have not seen at all in their entire lives and are born blind.

This is not the first time scientists have tried such a technology. In the past, similar devices have been used to support vision in partially sighted people.

Neuralink, however, stands different from other brain-computer interface projects in trying to add more electrodes to the implant which has the possibility of increasing the vividness of the vision of the user.

But how much vision would Blindsight actually restore is still a question.

Scientists have suggested that a tiny black hole is likely to pass through our solar system after every decade and this can be spotted by observing the wobbling of Mars.

Scientists have suggested that a tiny black hole is likely to pass through our solar system after every decade and this can be spotted by observing the wobbling of Mars. This observation was on the basis of the idea that the majority of dark matter in the universe is filled with minuscule black holes. The researchers, in order to determine the truth of this theory, have been closely observing the orbit of Mars. According to a new paper published in the journal Physical Review D, the tiny black holes when travelling through the solar system can make the red planet wobble in a way that it can be spotted from Earth. "Given decades of precision telemetry, scientists know the distance between Earth and Mars to an accuracy of about 10 centimetres [4 inches]," said study co-author David Kaiser, professor of physics at MIT, in a statement. "We're taking advantage of this highly instrumented region of space to try and look for a small effect. If we see it, that would count as a real reason to keep pursuing this delightful idea that all of dark matter consists of black holes that were spawned in less than a second after the Big Bang and have been streaming around the universe for 14 billion years," he added. Also Read: Mega collision with another galaxy 9 billion years ago created Milky Way black hole The researchers in the paper estimated one of these tiny black holes is likely to fly through our solar system one time in every decade. "Primordial black holes do not live in the solar system. Rather, they're streaming through the universe, doing their own thing," said paper co-author Sarah Geller, who is now a postdoc at the University of California at Santa Cruz, in the statement. "And the probability is, they're going through the inner solar system at some angle once every 10 years or so," he added. How do scientists plan to detect the passing of black holes? To detect these black holes, researchers have modelled every large body's orbits in the solar system and discovered that the tiny wobbles in the orbit of Mars can give a hint of the passing of asteroid-mass black holes. "State-of-the-art simulations of the solar system include more than a million objects, each of which has a tiny residual effect," said study co-author, Benjamin Lehmann, who is a researcher at MIT, in the statement. Watch: Astronomers find a rare black hole that defies current theories "But even modelling two dozen objects in a careful simulation, we could see there was a real effect that we could dig into," he added. Such wobbles will be detected by equipment on Earth. "We need as much clarity as we can of the expected backgrounds, such as the typical speeds and distributions of boring space rocks, versus these primordial black holes," said Kaiser. "Luckily for us, astronomers have been tracking ordinary space rocks for decades as they have flown through our solar system, so we could calculate typical properties of their trajectories and begin to compare them with the very different types of paths and speeds that primordial black holes should follow," he added. The asteroid will be at a distance of 2 million miles from the planet on Wednesday (Sep 18), as per NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

The astronomers in Hawaii first discovered this asteroid, which is 4.6 billion years old, in March 2013 and it will make its next close approach on March 27 when it will be 16 million miles away from Earth.

According to NASA, the asteroid which is larger than 492 feet and comes within 4.6 million miles of Earth has been termed a “potentially hazardous object".

A 64-year-old man, who was suffering from degenerative disease, was able to direct Amazon's Alexa digital assistant with his thoughts, announced the company which was behind the technological innovation on Monday (September 16).

The technology helped the man control devices and stream shows with just his thoughts.

Brain-computer interface company Synchron stated that the implant was made in the blood vessel of the brain of the man with the help of which he was able to mentally "tap" icons on an Amazon Fire tablet.

The man, who has been surviving with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), made video calls, played music, streamed shows, controlled smart home devices like lights, read books and shopped online as his mind directed Alexa, stated the New York-based company.

ALS is a kind of degenerative nerve disease in which one suffers from paralysis and there is weakness in the muscle.

"To be able to manage important aspects of my environment and control access to entertainment gives me back the independence that I'm losing," said the patient, named Mark, in the press release.

The test was carried out to show how customers just with their minds can control smart homes which have Alexa-compatible devices like door cameras, plugs, and thermostats, as per the company.

"While many smart home systems rely on voice or touch, we are sending control signals directly from the brain," said Synchron founder and chief executive Tom Oxley, in the press release.

Scientists were shocked when they discovered that pollution had created a hole in the protective ozone layer of Earth in the 1980s.

After nearly 40 years, scientists from the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) noticed that this hole had reduced in size which hinted at the possibility of its recovery.

In the latest atmospheric observations, it was revealed that it took a significant time for the ozone hole to be formed over the South Pole and it was smaller than expected this year.

The ozone layer is a thin layer of ozone gas in the atmosphere which is made of three oxygen atoms and is able to absorb all harmful UV radiation of the Sun.

The British Antarctic Survey carried out research in 1985 and found that there is a huge hole in the ozone layer over the South Pole.

When spring comes in the Southern Hemisphere, the hole opens up again and UV radiation pours down towards the Antarctic continent.

This results in too much radiation in Antarctica because of which Antarctic wildlife such as seals and penguins remain at a huge risk of getting sunburnt.

Can the ozone layer's hole completely heal?

Generally, the hole remains well established in mid-to-late August and closes by the end of November.

As per the new data, the formation of the ozone hole has been very slow in comparison to previous years.

The ozone hole did not start getting formed till September and remained very small throughout the period.

CAMS has predicted that for the rest of the year, the ozone hole will start shrinking faster and is likely to have completely closed by December.

"From volcanoes to climate change, there are a myriad of factors that play a role, directly or indirectly, in the formation of the Antarctic ozone hole. Nonetheless, none of them are as impactful as the anthropogenic ozone-depleting substances," said Laurence Rouil, director of CAMS.

"Just as a period of colder weather than usual doesn’t reveal long-term trends of climate, a slow start of an ozone hole can’t automatically be attributed to a recovery of the ozone layer," stated CAMS in a blog post.

Amid the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, Moscow was said to be "fully ready" for detonating a nuclear bomb at "any moment" in the Arctic, as per a report published in The Daily Mail.

Soviet test site's director Rear Admiral Andrei Sinitsyn said that the testing facilities are prepared and can be used immediately "if the order is given".

"The test site is ready to resume full-scale testing activities... The laboratory and testing facilities are ready. The personnel are ready," said Rear Admiral Sinitsyn, while speaking to the state-owned Rossiyskaya Gazeta.

He added that "foreign intelligence" has been monitoring the site, which is "likely a sign of a concern over nuclear tests".

He said that the test can go ahead if Russian President Vladimir Putin gives an order.

Since October 1990, the site has not been used for nuclear testing.

Sinitsyn said that the priority is to deter aggressors by "readiness" of testing ground infrastructure.

He added that this includes maintaining a 'laboratory' and 'experimental base' in a prepared state.

Russia can blast a nuclear bomb at 'any moment' in the Arctic: Report

Do 'electric eels', as the name suggests, can actually produce electricity? The science involving these aquatic hunters has made many people curious as some have tried to understand if this species can actually give you a jolt.

What are electric eels?

Electric eels are not “true” eels which are discovered in the order Anguilliformes. These species belong to the Gymnotiformes order which is also called as knifefishes.

Electric eels appear similar to carp and catfish, however, their elongated bodies and tapered tails make their movement through the waters swift.

Their body shapes help them in hunt and survive in the river ecosystems of South America.

Once an electric eel fully grows it can be 2.5 metres (8 feet) in length and 20 kilogrammes (45 pounds) in weight which makes them predators in their environment.

These electric eels are air breathers and fulfil 80 per cent of their oxygen needs by the intake of air into their mouths.

Because of this, these eels are able to thrive in oxygen-poor waters.

Are electric eels able to produce electricity?

The electric eels have three unique organs which help in the generation of electricity.

Each of these organs is filled with nearly 6,000 specific cells called electrolytes.

These electrolytes are able to discharge power when the eel feels threatened or when it attacks a potential prey.

“Electric eels are like living batteries. They have stacks of modified muscle cells called electrocytes, which have both a positive and a negative side,” said Dr Rupert Collins, who is a Senior Curator of Fishes at the Natural History Museum, London.

“When the cells are triggered, they discharge an electrical impulse into the surrounding water, making electric eels living, breathing generators of electricity," he added.

The scientists have not been able to understand how the electric eel manages to generate electric shocks and not hurt themselves in the process.

It is, however, believed that the water absorbs most of the electrical current around the eel.

Generally, the eel is able to generate nearly 600 volts of electricity but at times they have been able to produce 860 volts, as per a study.

If a human gets a shock from an electric eel, it can lead to severe respiratory difficulties and can also stop the heart.
