A pup was born without her bum and the vets had to perform a life-saving surgery on her to give the pup a proper bottom in the United Kingdom.

The five-month-old Bulldog named Lucky had a rare congenital defect called Atresia ani type 3 which meant she did not have any anus.

Her owners saw how she was struggling and took the pup to the vet who then referred Lucky to specialists at Linnaeus-owned West Midlands Veterinary Referrals (WMR) near Burton-on-Trent, Staffs.

In the summer, the pup went through a complex operation to create a new bottom from scratch.

Dr Chris Lancelott, who headed the treatment of Lucky, said, "Lucky was, in fact, unluckily born with a congenital defect that meant she had no anus."

"It was a severe case of a condition we call an 'Atresia ani type 3 and rectovaginal fistula'. In layman's terms, I needed to create an anus, reposition the rectum and attach the bowel to this new anus," he added.

"The surgery is challenging in these cases as type 3 atresia means the closed bowel is far away from where the anus should be. First, we removed the fistula (abnormal internal passageway) and then carefully dissected the rectum to mobilise it," Dr Lancelott stated.

After the three-hour operation ended, a week was spent by Lucky in recovering.

Lucky has now come back to her home in Rugeley, where the pup continued her convalescence.

Speaking about the pup, her owner Frances Silk said, "We realised within the first week of Lucky being born that she wasn't 'plumbed' correctly and, as a result, she suffered from water infections and constipation."

"Our local vets suggested we try to get her to between eight and 12 weeks old when she might be big enough to undergo an operation. After a thorough investigation and detailed discussions, we decided to go ahead with the operation to correct her issues," she added.

In a new study, a team of planetary scientists and engineers from Western University's Institute for Earth and Space Exploration in Canada have proposed a unique possibility of making food for space travellers using asteroids.

No, this does not mean they suggested that the space travellers eat some rocks, they rather suggested feeding bacteria to asteroid material that can lead to the growth of edible biomass, which will help in making food.

The study was published in the paper "International Journal of Astrobiology". In the paper, the researchers have stated that they have tested how much asteroid material will be required for creating edible biomass.

This new idea has been proposed by scientists to ensure food safety for astronauts who travel in deep space.

As per the study, scientists have suggested that asteroids can fulfil the nutritional needs of astronauts.

How will asteroids help produce food in space?

According to the idea, the carbon content of space rocks will be broken down and will be made into something edible.

There is a need for such food as astronauts carry a limited amount of dried food in space, and space farming has not yet come into existence.

Speaking to The New York Times, engineering professor at Western University in Ontario Joshua Pearce said that asteroids are very similar to plastic.

This study was led by researchers at Michigan Technology University and was taken ahead from a US Department of Defence project that was aimed at making edible food from plastic waste.

The process is called pyrolysis and in this plastic is broken down into oil, solids, and gas.

In a bioreactor, oil is fed to bacteria, which then produce 'biomass' with nutritional properties.

Separate research was conducted by Annemiek Waajen of Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam to confirm whether microbes actually eat asteroid material. In this process, microbes were fed pieces of meteorite which fell on Earth.

In the research, which was published in the journals Astrobiology and Scientific Reports, Dr. Waajen said that the microbes consumed the rocks and then grew.

As per their calculations, if its carbon content gets broken down by microbes, it will be able to support an astronaut for at least 600 years.

Asteroids can produce food for space travellers, suggests study

Will it be possible for robots to eventually think like humans one day? The idea may sound impossible to achieve but the researchers from King's College London claimed to have found a way through which this can be made possible.

According to the researchers, if the robots are given complex instructions without electricity it will help create more free space in the robotic "brain" which will eventually help them to "think".

Researchers gave a series of commands to devices using a new kind of compact circuit and ensured variations in pressure through a fluid inside it.

This is the first time such a possibility of giving thinking ability to robots has been introduced.

"Delegating tasks to different parts of the body frees up computational space for robots to 'think,' allowing future generations of robots to be more aware of their social context or even more dexterous. This opens the door for a new kind of robotics in places like social care and manufacturing," explained Dr Antonio Forte, senior author of the study and lecturer in Engineering at King's College London.

Future of thinking robots

As per the findings published in Advanced Science, if this idea is successfully implemented, it will lead to the creation of robots which can operate where electricity-powered devices cannot function.

The researchers further stated that these robots can also prove useful for low-income countries that lack reliable access to electricity.

"Put simply, robots are split into two parts: the brain and the body. An AI brain can help run the traffic system of a city, but many robots still struggle to open a door—why is that?" said Dr Forte.

"Software has advanced rapidly in recent years, but hardware has not kept up. By creating a hardware system independent from the software running it, we can offload a lot of the computational load onto the hardware, in the same way, your brain doesn't need to tell your heart to beat," he added.

Scientists suggest they can make robots 'think' like humans. Here's how

In a new research led by Northwestern University, microbiologists have found that an extremely diverse group of viruses grow on our showerheads and toothbrushes. However, these viruses don't target humans but bacteria. In the study, the microorganisms collected are bacteriophage or "phage" which is one kind of virus which is known for infecting the bacteria and replicating inside it. This study titled, "Phage communities in household-related biofilms correlate with bacterial hosts but do not associate with other environmental factors," was published in the journal Frontiers in Microbiomes. Speaking about the study, Northwestern's Erica Hartmann said, "The number of viruses that we found is absolutely wild. We found many viruses that we know very little about and many others that we have never seen before. It's amazing how much-untapped biodiversity is all around us. And you don't even have to go far to find it; it's right under our noses." Also Read: Oldest alive microbes are two-billion-year old and living in a rock. How did they survive? The study was started by Hartmann out of concern that a cloud of aerosol particles might be generated by flushing the toilet. "This project started as a curiosity. We wanted to know what microbes are living in our homes. If you think about indoor environments, surfaces like tables and walls are really difficult for microbes to live on. Microbes prefer environments with water. And where is there water? Inside our showerheads and on our toothbrushes," Hartmann said. During the study, she found more than 600 different viruses with no two samples being alike. "We saw basically no overlap in virus types between showerheads and toothbrushes," Hartmann said. "We also saw very little overlap between any two samples at all. Each showerhead and each toothbrush is like its own little island. It just underscores the incredible diversity of viruses out there," Hartmann said. Watch: Microbes developing resistance against antibiotics "We could envision taking these mycobacteriophage and using them as a way to clean pathogens out of your plumbing system. We want to look at all the functions these viruses might have and figure out how we can use them," Hartmann further stated. Will these microbes make humans sick? Hartmann said that the discovery of microbes should not be a concern to people as it will not harm them or make them sick. She further said it is best to regularly replace toothbrush heads and soak shower heads in vinegar to remove calcium bleach or just wash them in soap and water. "Microbes are everywhere, and the vast majority of them will not make us sick. The more you attack them with disinfectants, the more they are likely to develop resistance or become more difficult to treat. We should all just embrace them," Hartmann added. In new research, experts have suggested that the cells present inside the cheek of a person may be able to predict accurately how much they face the risk of death in the year ahead.

The study was published in the journal Frontiers in Aging on October 1 and has supported CheekAge which is a new tool to predict a person's risk of dying in a year using their cheek or "buccal" samples.

In the study carried out, a group of adults between the ages of 69 to 101 were tested for the risk of death and CheekAge showed that there was a 21 per cent increase in their risk of death in the next 12 months.

All about CheekAge: A new age death clock for humans

CheekAge is a kind of epigenetic clock which is a tool that measures the "biological age" of a person by studying their DNA and the chemical patterns related to it.

This 'biological ageing' test can tell if you are going to die in one year. Here's how it works

Researchers, who have been studying the dramatic changes in the continental configurations of Earth over the past billions of years, have made a stunning observation: that the oldest continental crusts are disintegrating.

According to experts, the Earth's crust went through expansion and contraction and has transformed not only its positions but also the topography across the entire planet.

From the time Earth came into existence, there has been long-term stability in some cratons of the continental crust and others have gone through little destruction because of mantle convection or tectonic events.

Also Read: Earth has a hidden massive sixth ocean in a crystal structure under its crust. Here's why

In new research, scientists have investigated the reason behind the deformation of cratons and found that it has happened because of a process called decratonisation. The study has been published in Nature Geoscience.

What is the cause of decratonisation in Earth's mantle?

Some experts believe that the possible cause of decratonisation is subduction - a process in which a denser mantle is pushed beneath another - and deep mantle plumes - a process in which one of the segments of the mantle rises to the surface because of buoyancy.

However, they have failed to determine the mechanism which is pushing the deformation and destruction of Earth's cratons.

China University of Geosciences Professor Shaofeng Liu investigated the disintegration of the North China Craton (NCC) and the western Pacific Ocean, which has been taking place for more than 200 million years.

However, the NCC is not the only place facing decratonisation, similar conditions were found in the North American craton, South American craton and the Yangtze craton.

"The North American craton, South American craton and the Yangtze craton in China may have experienced similar deformation. All of these may have experienced early flat-slab subduction. However, intense subsequent rollback subduction might have occurred in the Yangtze craton. In contrast, the North American craton underwent trench retreat following flat-slab subduction but did not exhibit significant slab rollback," said Professor Liu, as reported by phys.org.

"Ancient lithosphere can be broken apart, and this disintegration can be caused by this special form of subduction occurring near oceanic plates, revealing how the continents evolved over Earth's history," he added.

Here's why In new research, scientists have investigated the reason behind the deformation of cratons and found that it has happened because of a process called decratonisation. NASA has been on an alert and its Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) has been keeping track of three asteroids which will pass at a close distance from Earth on October 9.

The asteroids, named 2018 QE, 2024 TD3, and 2024 TK3, do not pose any threat to our planet, however, their proximity has given scientists an opportunity to carry out valuable research on space rocks.

Asteroid 2018 QE

Asteroid 2018 QE is a bus-sized space rock which measures 32 feet wide and will fly at a distance of 415,000 kilometres from Earth.

In an unbelievable discovery, scientists have found multiple mysterious underwater structures on the seafloor of the remote area of the Arctic.

The international team of researchers discovered a vast range of formations that were larger than football fields.

These "modern" formations stood at the edge of the Canadian Beaufort Sea.

Previously, the experts have spotted many gaping craters which are filled with ice and sediment and believed that it was created due to the ancient permafrost under the waves.

According to a report published in IFL Science, between 2010 and 2022, a total of 65 newly formed craters were found by the scientists, the largest of which was said to be of the size of a city block and featuring six-storey buildings.

The team was headed by the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI). They earlier thought that the permafrost spread over the area in the last stage of the ice age nearly 11,000 years ago.

However, when sea levels rose, the ancient permafrost on the Arctic shelf was covered.

Truth behind mysterious structure in the Arctic

In the latest research, the scientists took the help of underwater robots to collect samples from inside the newly-formed seafloor craters.

When the ice was analysed, it was found that the ice formed in present-day conditions.

Scientists found that the ice was created when deeper layers of ancient permafrost started melting under the sea and created brackish (slightly salty) groundwater which rose and sank again only to get refreeze on the seafloor.

According to a report published in IFL Science, the groundwater remains frozen at a temperature of -1.4C (29.5F) till the process starts again.

“These findings upend our assumptions about underwater permafrost,” said the study’s lead author Charlie Paull, of the MBARI, in a statement.

“We previously believed all underwater permafrost was leftover from the last ice age, but we’ve learned that submarine permafrost ice is also actively forming and decomposing on the modern seafloor,” he added.

“Our work shows that permafrost ice is both actively forming and decomposing near the seafloor over widespread areas, creating a dynamic underwater landscape with massive sinkholes and large mounds of ice covered in sediment," Paull stated.

"It feels like home in India. The government is concerned with us and cares for us unlike Pakistan, where we feared for our lives," sighs Dileep, brother of Arti, as he recalls the little he saw and heard from his family before he crossed the border at the age of 8.

But what made them take the drastic decision? "My uncle was murdered by some Muslim and no one heard our pleas, that was the point when we felt we didn't belong to Pakistan and shifted here," he speaks to WION while keeping his gaze at her sister, whose mellifluous voice flows through the hall and keeps the audience captivated.

But for Aarti's father, Dehraj, the biggest relief is that his daughter now can travel freely across states without any fear of facing any consequences.

"In Pakistan, we were afraid even if our daughters stepped out of the houses but now my girl is performing so far from us, but I know she is safe and is getting all opportunities to build her future," the girl's father chuckles as his moist eyes recall the days of hardship when even this land was not a home but just a mere land where he did all menial jobs and endured extreme pain to feed his family.

Leaving your house and migrating to a different country comes at a high cost.

The case was the same for Dehraj, who sold his land at an extremely low price somehow and ran from Pakistan after he saw his brother getting tagged as "kafir" (a term used for disbelievers of God in Islam) and dying just for demanding taxi fares from Muslim passengers.

"In Pakistan, if you have to live as a Hindu, you will have to keep your eyes, ears and mouth shut, or else be prepared to lose your house, property and lives," Dehraj warns as his bloodshot eyes scream out his agonies.

For Mehtab Ram, father of Reshma, it was the dark future of his children in Pakistan which made him change his motherland and seek shelter in India.

"Reshma is our family's only hope and this is because we are in India," Mehtab stutters amid the wailing of his other children.

Pakistani Hindu refugees finding identity in post-CAA era

The hardships and nightmares of these refugees continue to follow them like a dark shadow in the present times but it is the Citizenship (Amendment) Act of 2019 which has now become their torchbearer as they tread ahead in the future.

CAA is giving them what they need the most - their identity and their right to call India their "motherland" while allowing them to slowly axe their past relationship with Pakistan.

"CAA has benefitted us a lot. Almost my entire family has got their nationalities. The application for the rest of them is under process. This has proved fruitful to all who have come from Pakistan," says Dehraj, while speaking to WION.

It's not just these girls who have emerged as a ray of hope for the families but also the son of Dehraj, Dileep, who aims to become a journalist and ensure that the voices of the underprivileged and uprooted reach the world.

Leaving behind the scars of the dreadful past and the fear of being chased from one's own land, the new generation of Pakistani Hindu refugees is creating their own bright future and hoping to see a horizon with no sunset.

Pakistani Hindu refugees finding identity in post-CAA era The hardships and nightmares of these refugees continue to follow them like a dark shadow in the present times but it is the Citizenship (Amendment) Act of 2019 which has now become their torchbearer as they tread ahead in the future.

Currently, Luo is the only female “spider people” in the region. She started rock climbing at the age of 15 and got the guidance of her father.

As a child, she wanted to compete with boys and wished to earn a living by collecting medicinal herbs and bird droppings, which worked as fertiliser.

“They said this was only for boys, but I believe men and women are equal, so I learned. That is how my journey as a spider woman began,” said Luo, while speaking to the BBC in 2017.

“Before this area was developed, I climbed every day to collect swallows’ droppings. We would scale 108 metres. Foreigners were often frightened by our bare-handed climbing, but I grew accustomed to it. After doing it so many times, my hands became callused,” she added in an interview with Shandong TV.
