Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Chairman Imran Khan on Saturday appealed to his supporters and workers to get ready for the ‘Jail Bharo Tehreek’ (mass arrest movement) in protest against the government for inflicting torture on the leaders of his party and delaying the announcement for fresh general elections. The comments were made by the ousted prime minister on Saturday during his television address in which he was seen speaking from his Zaman Park residence.

The call has been made days after the cases of sedition were filed against Fawad Chaudhry, his party's Senior Vice-President, and former member of the National Assembly Shandana Gulzar.

“I ask the people to get ready and wait for my call for ‘jail bharo tehreek’. There will not be that much space in Pakistani jails to have them all,” said Khan.

He added that if the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N)-led government and their supporters in the military believe that “we will be frightened by harassment and custodial torture, they are seriously mistaken”.

“Wait for my call…when I will give you the signal to fill jails. I know the jails will choke as they don’t have that much capacity,” said Khan.

Khan's close aide Chaudhry was arrested last week from his Lahore residence in a pre-dawn raid after the Secretary of the Election Commission of Pakistan complained against him for “threatening” the members of the electoral body and their families.

Meanwhile, Gulzar, who had clinched victory from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province's reserved women’s seat, was booked for “inciting violence against constitutional institutions of the country”.

“Fawad Chaudhry was picked up from home at 3 am. What did Shandana Gulzar do that made her a terrorist? As the court gives bail to Sheikh Rashid, more cases are being filed against him,” Khan stated.

The former prime minister, in his fiery speech, stated that his party could have even held a nationwide strike. He added that, however, they decided to fill the prisons and not hold strikes as that may deteriorate the dwindling economy of the country.

“We have two options: Considering what they have been doing, we could have gone for a wheel-jam strike and demonstrations — which is also a way and a democratic one. But since the state of the economy is so bad, it will worsen it. Therefore, I ask all my workers, the Pakistani nation and everyone to prepare for the Jail Bharo movement,” Khan stated.

Pakistan: Imran Khan calls for ‘Jail Bharo’ movement against Shehbaz Sharif government

Adani Enterprises Ltd's plan of the first-ever public sale of bonds for raising around Rs10 billion ($122 million) was shelved, reported Bloomberg News on Saturday. Indian billionaire Gautam Adani's flagship firm had decided that the public note issuance will take place in January, working with AK Capital, Edelweiss Financial Services Ltd, Trust Capital and JM Financial, however, the activity has been stopped now, stated the report citing people who have knowledge of the matter, said the report.

On Wednesday, in a dramatic reversal, the follow-on public offering (FPO) of Adani Enterprises worth $2.5 billion was called off after a report prepared by Hindenburg Research led to the massive fall in the value of the group's stocks.

The matter is being investigated by the Indian markets regulator, and they are also looking at the crash in the shares of the company, the presence of any irregularities in the sale of shares which were shelved and the possibility of price manipulation.

Last week, Hindenburg Research's report alleged that the Adani Group has been making improper use of offshore tax havens and has been involved in stock manipulation.

Concerns were also raised on the valuation and high debt of Adani's seven listed companies.

India's image not impacted by Adani’s FPO pullout: FM

Speaking on the sudden pullout of $2.5 billion FPO by Adani, India's Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Saturday said that the economic image of India has not been affected by the decision.

"Our macroeconomic fundamentals or our economy's image, none of which has been affected. Yes, FPOs (follow-on public offers) come in, and FIIs (foreign institutional investors) get out," Sitharaman said.

The minister added that every market goes through “fluctuations”, however, the market's accretion in the last few days reflects the fact that the perception of the country as well as its inherent strengths are intact.

She added that the independent financial sector regulators of the country are looking into the allegations against the Adani Group and the markets' stability can be maintained by the capital markets watchdog Securities and Exchange Board of India.

Adani to appoint Big 4 firm to conduct ‘general audit’

One of the biggest international partners of Adani, TotalEnergies (TOT), said that preparations are taking place for the appointment of a global accounting firm to conduct Adani group's “general audit”.

In a statement, the French firm said it “welcomes the announcement by Adani to mandate one of the ‘big four’ accounting firms to carry out a general audit”.

The energy giant claimed that the investments made by them in Adani’s entities are “in full compliance” with Indian laws and as per its own internal governance processes.

It added that the investments have been made diligently and to its “satisfaction” and were “consistent with best practices.”

‘SEBI is committed to ensuring market integrity’

In a statement issued over market stability, SEBI said on Saturday that the financial market of India has demonstrated stability and is functioning in “a transparent, fair and efficient manner”.

“During the past week, unusual price movement in the stocks of a business conglomerate has been observed. As part of its mandate, SEBI seeks to maintain orderly and efficient functioning of the market and has put in place a set of well defined, publicly available surveillance measures (including the ASM framework) to address excessive volatility in specific stocks. This mechanism gets automatically triggered under certain conditions of price volatility in any stock,” the statement read.

“Further, in all specific entity related matters, if any information comes to SEBI’s notice, then, as per extant policies, the same is examined and after due examination, appropriate action is taken. SEBI has consistently followed this approach on entity level issues and would continue to do so in future as well,” it added.

Adani Group’s $122 million bond plan shelved after Hindenburg allegations: Report

In a new discovery, astronomers spotted 12 new moons around Jupiter, as the total count of the number of its satellites reached a record-breaking 92. With this, Jupiter became the planet with the highest number of moons in our solar system. Saturn, which was till now the planet with the highest number of 83 moons, now stands in second place.

The moons of Jupiter were recently added to the list maintained by the International Astronomical Union’s Minor Planet Centre, said Carnegie Institution's Scott Sheppard, who was part of the team.

The moons were discovered using telescopes in Hawaii and Chile in 2021 and 2022, and the astronomers confirmed their orbits in the follow-up observations.

Sheppard said that the newly-discovered moons range in size from 0.6 miles to 2 miles (1 kilometre to 3 kilometres).

"I hope we can image one of these outer moons close-up in the near future to better determine their origins," he stated in an email sent on Friday.

A spacecraft will be sent by the European Space Agency to Jupiter in April to investigate the planet and study some of its biggest and icy moons.

The Europa Clipper will be launched by NASA next year to explore Jupiter's one moon, which is said to harbour an ocean underneath its frozen crust.

Sheppard, who had a few years ago discovered several moons around Saturn, and had participated in discoveries of Jupiter's 70 moons so far, hopes to keep adding to the lunar tally of the two gas giants.

Sheppard said that Jupiter and Saturn have many small moons which are said to be fragments of the bigger moons which once existed and eventually collided with each other or with asteroids or comets.

The same scenario applies to Neptune and Uranus, however, they are so distant that moon-spotting becomes even harder.

Uranus has till now 27 confirmed moons, Neptune has 14, Mars has two and Earth has one. Venus and Mercury do not have any satellites.

The newly-found moons of Jupiter are yet to be named. Sheppard said that only some of the moons are big enough, at least 1 mile (1.5 kilometres) or so, to be given a name.

Astronomers spot 12 new moons of Jupiter, taking total to 92, surpassing Saturn in lunar tally

US job gains surged unexpectedly last month as unemployment slipped to its lowest rate in more than five decades, government data showed Friday, indicating strength in the labour market despite efforts to ease economic activity. This could prove concerning to policymakers, with risks that elevated wages could feed into inflation.

While the US central bank has tempered its aggressive campaign to rein in prices on signs that the world's biggest economy is cooling, the latest figures could steer it towards more interest rate hikes than expected.

The United States defied expectations to add 5,17,000 jobs in January, nearly double the December figure, after a five-month slowdown in hiring, said the Labour Department on Friday.

"Job growth was widespread, led by gains in leisure and hospitality, professional and business services, and health care," the report added.

Employment in manufacturing and construction showed resilience as well, despite a slowdown in activity in both sectors. The jobless rate edged down to 3.4 per cent, a level last seen in 1969, according to government figures.

But wage growth slowed slightly with average hourly earnings rising by 0.3 per cent to $33.03, down from December's 0.4 per cent increase.

Taken together, these figures suggest the labour market remains too hot for policymakers, with the hiring figure marking a spike from December's 260,000 number.

US President Joe Biden on Friday cheered the strong job creation since he took office and noted that inflation was still cooling off. He pushed back against critics who, he says, suggest that "the only way to slow down inflation was to destroy jobs".

"Today's data makes crystal clear... these critics and cynics are wrong," he told reporters, though conceding there remains more work to do.

No sign of softening

"The data show the economy is creating jobs at a rapid pace," said Rubeela Farooqi of High Frequency Economics.

Job creation is showing "no sign of softening" she added, despite the Fed's eight consecutive hikes to the benchmark lending rate, aimed at easing demand and bringing down costs.

"Wage growth has slowed, but it has not yet slowed enough for the Fed," added Ian Shepherdson at Pantheon Macroeconomics.

The Federal Reserve has been closely eyeing the jobs market, with labour demand exceeding the supply of available workers and employers keen to retain staff they may have struggled to find during the pandemic.

While unemployment is typically seen to edge up as interest rates rise and borrowing costs go up, the jobless rate has hovered at historically low levels in recent months.

Wages are "still at a high level," Fed Chair Jerome Powell told reporters on Wednesday.

"They're still at a level that's... well above where they were before the pandemic," he said. "It's going to be reflected in our assessment of the outlook and that will be reflected in our policy over time," he added.

The central bank this week announced a smaller interest rate hike, fueling optimism that the Fed is approaching the end of its cycle of rate increases.

Harder landing

But Friday's data could cast doubt on the situation.

"Without an adjustment in the labour market, the risk is that rates will move higher than anticipated," Farooqi of High Frequency Economics said.

This could have repercussions on other areas, with interest-sensitive sectors such as housing already slumping on higher rates while retail sales have slowed.

"This all increases the chance of a harder landing by mid-year," said Nationwide chief economist Kathy Bostjancic. She expects a moderate recession to start by around mid-year.

Shepherdson of Pantheon Macroeconomics added that "the Fed is more likely than not to hike (rates) in March, though we hope they don't, given the lagged effect of their previous tightenings is still to come."

A repeat of January's surge is unlikely in the coming months, said Ryan Sweet of Oxford Economics, noting that employment growth is often higher than expected in the first month of the year.

"We still expect employment growth to slow markedly as the economy enters a recession in response to the Fed's cumulative rate hikes," he said.

He expects "outright job losses" in the second half of the year with joblessness rising modestly.

The police arrested a 24-year-old man in Dallas and slapped charges of suspected stealing of a pair of emperor tamarin monkeys, which were recovered unharmed in an abandoned home this week, a day after they disappeared from the Dallas Zoo.

The police arrested Davion Irvin late Thursday night and charged him with six counts of animal cruelty-non-livestock, stated the Dallas Police in a news release.

Irvin has been kept at the Dallas County Jail. “The preliminary investigation and help from the public identified Irvin as the man Dallas Police were looking to speak with regarding the missing monkeys at the Dallas Zoo,” the police stated.

The disappearance of monkeys was followed by several suspicious incidents that took place at the zoo in recent weeks which involved vultures, langur monkeys and leopards. Because of the incidents, the zoo's security was hiked, which included overnight staff, technology, more cameras, security patrols and fencing. Meanwhile, 12 squirrel monkeys' weekend theft was reported by a Louisiana zoo.

A reward of $25,000 was offered in the case of missing monkeys of Dallas zoo as officials released surveillance footage that “seems to have been critical in generating a tip that led to the recovery of the tamarins” in a home located in Lancaster, Texas.

A photo of an unidentified person was also released by the police as they said that the man is being searched and will be interrogated. The video shows a man slowly walking down a zoo sidewalk and constantly looking back while moving forward.

On Monday, the monkeys went missing from a habitat that had been “intentionally compromised,” the zoo stated, adding that there were reasons for Dallas Police to believe they were “intentionally taken from the enclosure". It was earlier announced that the zoo will remain closed on Monday due to inclement weather and the closure was further extended because of the ice storm.

"How the animals left the zoo and got into the Lancaster house is still a mystery. Upon their return, the monkeys were put into quarantine," the zoo stated.

Police arrest suspect in case of missing monkeys of Dallas Zoo

The drug watchdog of Australia on Friday announced that the authorities will be soon legalising psychedelic substances MDMA and psilocybin, which are commonly known as magic mushrooms and ecstasy, for treating patients who are suffering from depression and post-traumatic stress.

From July, psychiatrists will be free to prescribe both substances, said the Therapeutic Goods Administration after it found "sufficient evidence for potential benefits in certain patients".

Both drugs are currently "prohibited substances" and authorities can only use them in closely controlled clinical trials.

The administration said that the drugs were found to be "relatively safe" when they were administered in a medical setting and provided an "altered state of consciousness" which seemed to help the patients.

University of South Australia's mental health and suicide prevention researcher Mike Musker welcomed the move as "long-awaited".

"There are many people in the community experiencing PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) and depression, particularly army veterans and people who have worked in emergency services, where standard psychiatric drugs have not worked and offer no relief," he stated.

Musker added that both drugs "reduce inhibitions" and will help people process difficult memories and images.

Presently, the use of psilocybin and MDMA will remain limited to the treatment of patients suffering from depression and post-traumatic stress.

However, the advocates hope that the drugs will be one day used for treating eating disorders, alcohol dependence and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Indigenous people have used psychedelics for millennia, however, western researchers started understanding the potential uses of these drugs in the middle of the last century.

The drugs were seen as symbols of the 1960s' counter-culture movement and were banned.

Authorities in the United States and Canada are among those who have permitted for the medical use of MDMA and psilocybin.

For a long time, women have been hyper-vigilant regarding the unwanted male attention they receive at the gym. With the technological advancements, recording the offenders in action has become a sport of its own on TikTok, as women place their phones covertly on record and then watch the recording to know the person who was staring at them when they were doing squats.

On TikTok, the hashtag “gym weirdos” received over 1.9 million views, as videos showed men trying to flirt or harass women who were trying to complete their exercises unbothered.

Gmail’s creator Paul Buccheit took to Twitter recently to share his opinion on the artificial intelligence bot ChatGPT, created by Open AI, as he expressed his fear that it may replace Google.

Buccheit said that search engine giant Google may be destroyed by the new AI bot in the next two years. The most profitable application of Google, Search can soon get replaced by the tool of Open AI, he stated. ChatGPT, within a week of its launch in November 2022, garnered over a million users.

The users have widely hailed the AI tool for being able to compose complex essays, jokes, poems marketing pitches and even for clearing the toughest exams.

“Google may be only a year or two away from total disruption. AI will eliminate the Search Engine Result Page, which is where they make most of their money. Even if they catch up on AI, they can't fully deploy it without destroying the most valuable part of their business. The way I imagine this happening is that the URL/Search bar of the browser gets replaced with AI that autocompletes my thought/question as I type it while also providing the best answer (which may be a link to a website or product),” wrote Paul Buccheit, in a series of tweets.

Buccheit further stated that ChatGPT replace the search engines, the way Google replace the Yellow Pages (the information diary which existed before the launch of the Google Search engine) and that the Search Engine Result Page will be eliminated by the AI.

An urgent investigation was ordered by the Royal Navy amid claims that broken bolts in the reactor chamber of the Trident nuclear-armed submarine were fixed using glue by workers. As per a report by the Sun, faulty repairs were discovered on HMS Vanguard’s cooling pipes after one of the bolts came out during an inspection.

Originally, the bolt heads came off because of over-tightening. However, instead of replacing the damaged shafts, a quick fix was implemented by the staff at the defence contractor Babcock using glue.

The engineers called it a procedural glitch after the problem was discovered, however, no one mentioned the repair’s botched nature.

“It’s a disgrace. You can’t cut corners with nuclear. Standards are standards. Nuclear standards are never compromised,” stated a navy source.

“The glued bolts held insulation in place on the coolant pipes in the nuclear reactor and were found just as workers were set to fire it up to full power for the first time,” reported the newspaper.

The records of repairs will be trawled by the investigators to find out when the bodged repair took place and who should be held ultimately responsible.

An online advertisement for a luxury sports car appeared too good to be true to China's potential car buyers. The brand-new vehicle was mistakenly listed by a Porsche dealership in the Chinese city of Yinchuan for ¥124,000 ($18,300, £15,000).

The price listed was just a fraction of what it should have been. The starting price of the Porsche Panamera is $148,000. Hundreds of potential buyers were attracted to the advertisement and rushed to clinch the offer, believing it to be a bargain price.

The German car maker's spokesperson, while speaking to the BBC, said that the promotion "contained a serious mistake in the listed retail price", which was immediately taken down.

"As there was only one vehicle in stock, in accordance with the sales process, Porsche Centre Yinchuan has communicated with the first customer who made an online refunded reservation fee and has negotiated an agreeable outcome", the car manufacturer added.

Also, the dealership contacted "every bidder individually and explained the situation with an apology".

The dealership posted the incorrect information on January 30 and the ¥911 reservation fee paid by the customers was refunded, stated Porsche.

The Chinese social media was abuzz with the incidents, as one commentator posted, "This is why I don't buy Porsche lol". Other social media users called it a promotional strategy that was "well conducted".

Some people also called that company "irresponsible" and said that the cut-price offer should have been honoured by Porsche.

A social media user also shared that he was the first person who attempted to buy the car at a bargain price but he cancelled the order when the real price was mentioned by the company.

Porsche brand new vehicle at a bargain price? Buyers rush for false deal

Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday said that the government has no choice but to agree to bailout conditions of IMF that are "beyond imagination". A delegation from International Monetary Fund (IMF) landed on Tuesday in Pakistan for the last talks to revive the months-stalled financial aid.

The government has opposed the demands of the IMF related to tax rise and subsidiary slashing, as it fears backlash before the elections which are scheduled in October.

"I will not go into the details but will only say that our economic challenge is unimaginable. The conditions we will have to agree to with the IMF are beyond imagination. But we will have to agree with the conditions," said Sharif, in televised comments.

The economy of Pakistan is in dire conditions, hit by the balance of payments crisis as the government is trying to manage high levels of external debt, amid deteriorating security and political chaos.

The central bank of the country on Thursday announced a drop in foreign exchange reserves to $3.1 billion, which analysts stated is sufficient for less than three weeks of imports.

On Wednesday, the data showed the year-on-year inflation at a 48-year high due to which Pakistanis have been struggling to purchase basic food items.

The control on the rupee was also loosened by the government to rein in the black market in US dollars which led to the currency dropping to a record low.

"Accepting IMF conditions will definitely increase prices, but Pakistan has no other choice. Otherwise, there is a fear of a situation like Sri Lanka and Lebanon," said analyst Abid Hasan.
