80-year-old Biden to get medical checkup before the upcoming 2024 bid

A chest freezer, which was part of British street artist Banksy's work, was returned on Wednesday a day after the local council removed it citing "health and safety" reasons.&nbsp;On Tuesday, the mural was seen in southeast England's Margate, depicting a 1950s housewife with a missing tooth and a swollen eye shoving her husband into a real chest freezer.

Even after facing protests from locals who clicked pictures of the mural which appeared at the end of a terrace of the seaside town's rundown part, council workers threw the freezer into a van.

On Wednesday, the local council however announced that it had returned the old appliance.

Thanet District Council, in a statement, said, "The freezer which council operatives removed from the Banksy installation in Margate has now been made safe. It has been returned to its original position at the site of the artwork today."

The council added that the freezer was removed citing "health and safety reasons".

The council further acknowledged that Banksy's mural raises an important issue of domestic abuse. It added that it has been in touch with the property's owner to understand what they intend to do to preserve it.

Banksy, whose true identity is still unconfirmed, shared three images of the work, under the title "Valentine's Day Mascara", on his Instagram account.&nbsp;

The Chinese balloon, which was shot down after it crossed the continental United States, was on its way to Guam and Hawaii, however, it was blown off course by prevailing winds, claimed a US official on Wednesday.

On Wednesday, diplomatic friction between China and the United States worsened after Beijing charged the latter with flying high-altitude balloons over the Xinjiang and Tibet regions and threatened to take measures against the US entities which have undermined the sovereignty of China.&nbsp;

Beijing and Washington have been involved in a tussle over the flying balloons after a Chinese balloon was shot down by the US military as it claimed it to be a spy device flowing over the coast of South Carolina.&nbsp;

However, Beijing claimed the balloon to be a civilian research vessel which had veered off mistakenly and stated that Washington had overreacted.&nbsp;

The allegations made by the White House have been disputed by China.

Six Chinese entities, which are related to the suspected surveillance balloon programme of Beijing, have been added to an export blacklist by Washington.

"The US has abused force, overreacted, escalated the situation, and used this as a pretext to illegally sanction Chinese companies and institutions," said Wang.

"China is firmly opposed to this and will take countermeasures against relevant U.S. entities that undermine China's sovereignty and security in accordance with the law," he added.&nbsp;

The search for Scotland's new First Minister has started after the surprise decision of Nicola Sturgeon to stand down. The announcement was made by the SNP leader on Wednesday after completing more than eight years on the job. Sturgeon, however, plans to remain in office till her successor is elected. The national executive committee of SNP will meet on Thursday evening to make a timetable for a leadership race.

As there is no obvious successor, the first leadership contest of the party in nearly 20 years can witness a debate on strategy and future direction. The possible replacements include &nbsp;Kate Forbes, who was finance secretary before her maternity leave, Deputy First Minister John Swinney, and Constitution Secretary Angus Robertson.

The names of Justice Secretary Keith Brown and Health Secretary Humza Yousaf have come up as potential candidates, however, no one has expressed their intention to stand.

The announcement was made by Sturgeon at a news conference held at her official Edinburgh residence, Bute House. Sturgeon insisted that she had been weighing up the decision for some time.

To serve people well, a politician must be willing to make way for someone else when it is the right time, she said,

"In my head and in my heart I know that time is now. That it's right for me, for my party and my country," said Sturgeon.&nbsp;

Sturgeon added that she did not decide to step down in response to the "latest period of pressure", which includes controversies over trans prisoners, gender recognition reforms and the strategy on independence.

Sturgeon spoke about the sacrifices and pressure she faced while in high office, adding: "I am a human being as well as a politician."

After Nicola Sturgeon's surprise resignation, search begins to find successor

The skyline of London at night may look very different from what it looks today as new rules have been drafted by the city authorities according to which skyscrapers will be required to dim their lights overnight.

The step will “cut light pollution and save energy”, as stated by the City of London Corporation, which is the governing body of the financial district.

After the new rules are adopted, the high-rise buildings in the Square Mile – the area in London where most of the high-rise buildings remain clustered – will be required to switch off unnecessary lights in the building after sunset.

The new buildings will have to compulsorily follow the rules. The authorities will encourage the existing buildings to adopt the policy, however, it won't be mandatory.

The authorities have introduced the rule as an increasing amount of evidence shows the light pollution's devastating impact on human health and biodiversity as well as the wasted energy.

What is the new policy?

The new policy has been stated in the 'Lighting Supplementary Planning Document', as reported by Britain’s Financial Times.

According to the plan, different curfews will be imposed on various ‘brightness zones’ across the capital. If the rule is implemented, businesses in heritage and residential areas will have to switch off lights at 10 pm and businesses in tourist and cultural areas will be allowed to keep the lights on till 11 pm.

In commercial areas, people are allowed to keep unnecessary lights on until midnight. City of London Corporation planning and transportation committee chairman Shravan Joshi said that currently, the document is under the process of consultation.

“The City is a unique place in which 24/7 business districts and busy transport hubs rub up against historic buildings and residential neighbourhoods,” he said.

"The strategy laid out in this document is aimed at ensuring an intelligent, sensitive approach to lighting which ensures the City is safe and accessible while protecting its historic character and the amenity of our residents,” Joshi added.

What is the situation of light pollution in London?

According to the researchers, the human eye must be able to see thousands of stars on a clear night. However, less than 30 per cent of people from around the world can get a clear view of the stars. This is because, in most areas, artificial light blocks out the night sky.

The biodiversity also suffers a devastating impact of the ‘skyglow'. In the UK, 60 per cent of the wildlife depends on natural darkness for their survival, as natural signals set pollination rhythms, migration and reproduction.

Light pollution also adversely affects human health by causing an interruption in the circadian sleep rhythms, which can lead to depression and heart and blood problems.

Light pollution: London plans to switch off lights of high-rise buildings at night

Valentine's Day2023:&nbsp;It's 2023, the world is still spinning on its axis, scientists are still hunting for life on Mars and Gen Z culture has taken over Millenials. Amid these changes, one thing that hasn't changed at all is the over-romanticised idea of love – an idea which holds the capacity of selling flimsy, yellow chiffon sarees to Indians visiting the snow-clad Alps in Switzerland so that they can go all "Chandni".

For those who couldn't really understand the chemistry between "Chandni" and "Switzerland", Netflix is dropping a docuseries "The Romantics", a kind of remedial class on 90's Bollywood romance. So, here's the season to sell love in all forms – flowers, food, clothes, films, travel, chocolate, jewellery and the list goes on. So the question arises: who's the one actually enjoying celebrations – lovers or those trading in love?

<h2>Burning in love</h2>

Remember Elvis Presley's "Burning Love" which went like "Girl, girl, girl, girl, You gonna set me on fire, My brain is flaming.......I'm just a hunk, a hunk of burning love". Often people say that they are burning in love, but let's pause for a while and understand what is exactly burning on a Valentine's Day – a hole in your pocket? This is the season when literally everything can be sold, from a heart-shaped island to a heart-shaped &nbsp;pizza and that too at an unbelievable price! Why? Because Urdu poet Jigar Moradabadi very rightly said,&nbsp;"ye ishq nahin asan itna hi samajh liije, ik aag ka dariya hai aur duub ke jaana hai (Understand that love is not easy, it's a river full of fire and you have to swim through it)”.

Years back, Valentine's Day was just one spend full day. Now, it's a season of seven days to buy chocolates, purchase teddies and keep the shopkeepers and online sellers happy and in glee. Flowers are the best deal these days. In Pune, people are buying Dutch roses for Rs300 a bunch, no not a bunch of 100 roses but that of a mere 15! The trend of greeting cards on birthdays, New Year and other occasions has become obsolete. But that's not the case with Valentine's. On this day, even cards work magic for shopkeepers. Poor fellows arrested in love are lured using every possible business trick to splurge their hard-earned money and help the people in business print the notes.

<h2>Social hype, peer pressure and FOMO</h2>

Why is it so important to go on a proper date on Valentine's Day? Couples these days actually have a checklist – romantic location, nice food, champagne and stuff. But why? It's the Instagram dilemma and the peer pressure and fear of missing out (FOMO) that comes along. How can one not upload pictures on Instagram? Isn't it mandatory? Wouldn't people call it blasphemy if not done? Instagram is the perfect place to promote businesses, sell businesses and lure people to businesses. And then we have a dedicated list of "Instagram-worthy places" on Zomato. Today good food and wine don't help restaurants pull crowds, its Instagram-worthy label which makes the impossible happen.

So, this Valentine’s day, here's a congratulations to all the singles out there who have managed to save their pockets from being raided for an over-hyped emotion called "love".

Valentine's Day2023: It's 2023, the world is still spinning on its axis, scientists are still hunting for life on Mars and Gen Z culture has taken over Millenials. ALSO READ | 'Freedom is a gift': Indian leader's Valentine's Day tweet celebrating singlehood goes viral Burning in love Remember Elvis Presley's "Burning Love" which went like "Girl, girl, girl, girl, You gonna set me on fire, My brain is flaming.......I'm just a hunk, a hunk of burning love". Often people say that they are burning in love, but let's pause for a while and understand what is exactly burning on a Valentine's Day – a hole in your pocket? This is the season when literally everything can be sold, from a heart-shaped island to a heart-shaped pizza and that too at an unbelievable price! Why? Because Urdu poet Jigar Moradabadi very rightly said, "ye ishq nahin asan itna hi samajh liije, ik aag ka dariya hai aur duub ke jaana hai (Understand that love is not easy, it's a river full of fire and you have to swim through it)”. Valentine's Day 2023: A day for businesses to make 'money' their 'honey'

For the coronation ceremony of Britain's King Charles III, which is to be held at Westminster Abbey in May, Queen Consort Camilla has chosen to wear the crown on which the controversial colonial-era Kohinoor diamond is not set, said the Buckingham Palace on Tuesday.

The choice of Queen Mary Crown made by Camilla for coronation means it will be studded with a replica of one of the largest cut diamonds in the world, as the original diamond is presently adorning the crown of Elizabeth the Queen Mother, Queen Elizabeth II's mother.

The palace stated that they removed the Queen Mary Crown from display at the Tower of London so that it can be used in the ceremony to be held on May 6, replacing it with jewels that paid tribute to the late Queen Elizabeth II.

While there is a front cross set in the current crown of Queen Mary with Kohinoor diamond's detachable rock crystal replica, it is not known yet if the royalty would retain it after the changes are made for the king's coronation.

“The choice of Queen Mary's Crown by Her Majesty is the first time in recent history that an existing crown will be used for the Coronation of a Consort instead of a new commission being made, in the interests of sustainability and efficiency,” said Buckingham Palace.

Kohinoor, which in Persian means mountain of light, came in possession of Queen Victoria from Maharaja Ranjit Singh's treasury a few years before she became the Empress of India.

“Some minor changes and additions will be undertaken by the Crown Jeweller, in keeping with the longstanding tradition that the insertion of jewels is unique to the occasion, and reflects the Consort's individual style. These changes will in particular pay tribute to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, as the crown will be reset with the Cullinan III, IV and V diamonds,” stated the palace.

Also, four of the eight detachable arches in the Queen Mary Crown will be removed for giving a “different impression” to when Queen Mary wore it at the 1911 coronation.

The palace further confirmed that St Edward's Crown, which will be used for King Charles' coronation, has been kept for public display at the Tower of London after its modifications were completed for the grand Westminster Abbey ceremony.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a telephonic conversation with US President Joe Biden on Tuesday and welcomed the landmark deal between Air India and Boeing as a “shining example of mutually beneficial co-operation”, as per media reports.

The deals for a record purchase of 470 jets from Airbus and Boeing were unveiled by Air India on Tuesday, accelerating the national emblem's rebirth under its new owners Tata Group as the United States and Europe appreciated the deepening political and economic ties with India.

The provisional deals include 250 planes from Airbus and 220 from Boeing, breaking previous records of any such deal by a single airline as Air India competes with domestic giant IndiGo to provide service to a nation that will soon become the largest population in the world.

A peacock was locked up by an owner of an arts and crafts centre after the bird damaged the car of a visitor.

John Blunt is the owner of Ferrers Centre which is in Staunton Harold located on the border of Derbyshire and Leicestershire.

Blunt said that the peacock “Toby” pecked at the outer side of a shiny black BMW car after seeing his reflection when the car was standing at the parking site, causing damage worth hundreds of pounds.

A peahen mate was bought by Blunt for Toby in the hope that seeing the peahen will improve his mood and he will be able to regain his lost freedom.

"A black car was badly scratched by him and he was seen doing it. He was pecking at his reflection, pecking the black paintwork of the car. I think it's quite common if they see their reflection but it's a first time for us. Being my peacock on my land it was my responsibility so I'm faced with a bill for the damage,” Blunt said.

The peacock's pen has been covered with netting for the time being so that he doesn't get out. "I'd ideally like to let him out again because he's become an enormous attraction,” said Blunt.

He added that he had hoped giving a potential mate to Toby would curb his urge to peck on cars, however, so far the peahen was "playing hard to get".

However, he remains optimistic about romance eventually blossoming between the pair.

"We're hoping that they'll get together and lay some eggs. Who knows we might have some little baby peacocks," Blunt added.&nbsp;

Chinese President Xi Jinping on Tuesday said that Iran nuclear issue needs to be resolved early and applauded the “solidarity” shared between the two countries as he met Islamic republic's President Ebrahim Raisi as the latter began his three-day visit.

In the first state visit of an Iranian president to China in the last 20 years, Raisi was accompanied by a large trade and finance delegation. On the red carpet, Raisi was greeted by Xi.

"In the face of the current complex changes in the world, times, and history, China and Iran have supported each other (and) worked together in solidarity and co-operation," said Xi said, as per the state broadcaster CCTV.

Xi also said that his government will continue to "participate constructively" in talks for resuming negotiations on the Iran nuclear agreement's implementation.

Iran's uranium enrichment programme was limited by a 2015 nuclear agreement which made it difficult for the country to develop nuclear arms. Iran had claimed that it was developing nuclear arms for peaceful reasons.

Both nations have been facing pressure from Western nations over their stand on Russia's invasion of Ukraine, as strict sanctions have already been issued by the United States against Iran because of its nuclear programme.

China "supports Iran in safeguarding national sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity and national dignity... and in resisting unilateralism and hegemonism", Xi was quoted as saying by CCTV.

China's Xi meets Raisi, calls for Iran nuclear issue's early resolution

Pakistan plans to quadruple its domestic coal-fired capacity to reduce power generation costs and will not build new gas-fired plants in the coming years, its energy minister told Reuters on Monday, as it seeks to ease a crippling foreign-exchange crisis.

A shortage of natural gas, which accounts for over a third of the country's power output, plunged large areas into hours of darkness last year. A surge in global prices of liquefied natural gas (LNG) after Russia's invasion of Ukraine and an onerous economic crisis had made LNG unaffordable for Pakistan.

"LNG is no longer part of the long-term plan," Pakistan Energy Minister Khurram Dastgir Khan told Reuters, adding that the country plans to increase domestic coal-fired power capacity to 10 gigawatts (GW) in the medium-term, from 2.31 GW currently.&nbsp;

Pakistan's plan to switch to coal to provide its citizens reliable electricity underscores challenges in drafting effective decarbonisation strategies, at a time when some developing countries are struggling to keep lights on.

Despite power demand increasing in 2022, Pakistan's annual LNG imports fell to the lowest levels in five years as European buyers elbowed out price-sensitive consumers.

"We have some of the world's most efficient regasified LNG-based power plants. But we don't have the gas to run them," Dastgir said in an interview.

The South Asian nation, which is battling a wrenching economic crisis and is in dire need of funds, is seeking to reduce the value of its fuel imports and protect itself from geopolitical shocks, he said.

Pakistan's foreign exchange reserves held by the central bank have fallen to $2.9 billion, barely enough to cover three weeks of imports.

"It's this question of not just being able to generate energy cheaply, but also with domestic sources, that is very important," Dastgir said.

The Shanghai Electric (601727.SS) Thar plant, a 1.32 GW capacity plant that runs on domestic coal and is funded under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), started producing power last week. The CPEC is a part of Beijing's global Belt and Road Initiative.

In addition to the coal-fired plants, Pakistan also plans to boost its solar, hydro and nuclear power fleet, Dastgir said, without elaborating.

If the proposed plants are constructed, it could also widen the gap between Pakistan's power demand and installed power generation capacity, potentially forcing the country to idle plants.

The maximum power demand met by Pakistan during the year ended June 2022 was 28.25 GW, more than 35% lower than power generation capacity of 43.77 GW.

It was not immediately clear how Pakistan will finance the proposed coal fleet, but Dastgir said setting up new plants will depend on "investor interest," which he expects to increase when newly commissioned coal-fired plants are proved viable.

Financial institutions in China and Japan, which are among the biggest financiers of coal units in developing countries, have been backing out of funding fossil-fuel projects in recent years amid pressure from activists and Western governments.&nbsp;

"LNG is no longer part of the long-term plan," Pakistan Energy Minister Khurram Dastgir Khan told Reuters, adding that the country plans to increase domestic coal-fired power capacity to 10 gigawatts (GW) in the medium-term, from 2.31 GW currently.
