A CCTV camera captured the moment when a commuter narrowly escaped from getting injured as the ceiling panel, which weighed around 25 pounds (11.3 kig), collapsed at the platform of a Boston-area subway station.

The video shared online showed the passenger walking along with others when suddenly the ceiling panel came crashing down at the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority's (MBTA) Harvard Station in Cambridge just before 4 pm last Wednesday, after which a cloud of dust rose from the fallen debris.

In a press conference, MBTA interim General Manager Jeff Gonneville said that the aluminium panel which fell was about 10 feet (3 metres). “I am extremely thankful and relieved that there were no injuries as a result of this accident," he stated.

Around 10 other panels, among the 400 to 500 installed in the station, were removed by the MBTA.

Gonneville stated that the panel was old, dating back to 1978, and was wet which showed signs of corrosion. The panel does not have any effect on the station's structural integrity.

Inspection is being carried out by the agency in other stations where drop ceilings are installed, although Gonneville emphasised that the design at Harvard Station is unique.

WATCH | Passenger narrowly misses falling ceiling at US subway station

The people living in Newburyport have asked the City Council to replace the state flag and seal of Massachusetts, stating that the imagery used promotes the racist history of the state, according to a Fox News report.

As reported by Newburyport Daily News, a resolution was sent to the council on February 27 that asked them to support the Special Commission Relative to the Seal and Motto of the Commonwealth's work.

The commission had recommended that the flag and seal must be replaced to reflect Massachusetts' diverse residents. The resolution was referred on the same day to the General Government Committee in a 9-2 vote.

The resolution was pushed by Marianna Vesey and Linda Lu Burciaga, residents of Newburyport, who claim that the change has already been adopted by 55 other municipalities.

Vesey and Burciaga added that the resolution is being considered by dozens of other municipalities.

Vesey stated that the state seal appears to support the idea that white people are "in charge of this world and that “we have to subdue the Native American people" through a "colonising and violent depiction".

"One of the reasons that we can ignore this so easily is that our White supremacy culture has really allowed for the disappearance of the Native American world. We’re really trying to say that they are not gone. They are here among us, and we really need to not only recognise that but honour it," she stated.

Burciaga, meanwhile, said that the state flag and seal appear "problematic”. He added that the seal and the flag depict a colonial sword being grasped by a white hand over the head of a Native American person.

Residents claim Massachusetts state flag and seal promoting racist history, demands change

The disturbing milestone of 100 mass shootings was surpassed by the US in 2023, raising questions over the inaction in the country's state legislatures and Washington.

In the first week of March, the US reached the grim number of 100 as per the data released by the Gun Violence Archive (GVA), which defines a mass shooting as an incident in which at least four people are killed, excluding the gunman.

The US last year reached the number 100 on March 19, according to the GVA.

In 2021, the country reached the number 100 in late March and from 2018 to 2020, 100 mass shootings did not take place till May.

“Americans are tired of fearing if they or their families will be the next victims of a mass shooting. Our children are tired of being told to ‘run, hide, and fight',” stated Kris Brown, president at Brady: United Against Gun Violence.

“These regular, uniquely American tragedies must be a call to action for our political leaders. We need decisive change to US gun laws and regulations. The cost of political inaction on preventing gun violence is increasingly, tragically clear,” said Brown.

Following the passage of bipartisan gun safety law, there has not been much development on more gun safety legislation in the divided Congress, even as the rate of mass shootings has increased.

“Although fatal and nonfatal firearm injuries are growing, no real legislative response has followed acts of gun violence in support of individuals or the communities in which they live. And there is scant proof that prevention measures, such as active shooter drills, have reduced actual harm,” said Mark S Kaplan, a professor of social welfare at UCLA.

“There are real solutions and tools – including bans on the sale of assault weapons and high-capacity magazines – available now that can make a difference, but only if our elected officials act to implement them,” he stated.

US passenger arrested for stabbing flight attendant, attempting to open exit door

On Monday, 23 protesters, who included a Canadian and a Frenchman, were charged with domestic terrorism in the US state of Georgia after forcefully entering a police training centre and throwing bricks and Molotov cocktails at officers.

As per the police, the co-ordinated attack was launched by "violent agitators" against officers and the construction equipment was burned at the Atlanta facility's site which has been nicknamed by opponents as "Cop City”.

The training centre, which has been constructed on 85 acres (34 hectares) of South River Forest's land in DeKalb County, has always been fiercely opposed since officials tabled their proposal in 2021, as tensions over the proposed plans continue to rise.

"This wasn't about a public safety training centre, this was about anarchy, and this was about the attempt to destabilise," said Atlanta police chief Darin Schierbaum, in a late-night press conference.

As per the police statement, 35 people were detained and 23 of them "charged with domestic terrorism”. The security video released by the facility showed protesters dressed in black gathering at a fence and throwing explosive devices and rocks towards the police, who struggled to lock the gate.

Schierbaum said that no officers suffered injuries in the incident.

"When you throw commercial-grade fireworks, when you throw Molotov cocktails... at officers, your only intent is to harm. This is not a protest. This is criminal activity,” he said.

Police in Georgia's capital Atlanta, in a statement, said that "the agitators destroyed multiple pieces of construction equipment by fire and vandalism."

President Volodymyr Zelensky said Ukraine will continue military operations to defend the embattled city of Bakhmut, which will be backed by senior generals.

Zelensky said he held discussions over Bakhmut with Oleksandr Syrsky, commander of the country's ground forces, and Valery Zaluzhny, the head of Ukraine's armed forces, reported BBC.

"They spoke in favour of continuing the defensive operation and further strengthening our positions in Bakhmut," he said in a statement.

Ukrainian presidential aide Mykhailo Podolyak reiterated the "consensus" in the Ukraine army to continue fighting for Bakhmut, a city which Russia is determined to capture.

Bakhmut has witnessed the longest-running and bloodiest battle of the Russia-Ukraine war, even as analysts state that the city has little strategic significance.

"There is a consensus among the military on the need to continue defending the city and the attrition of enemy forces while building new lines and lines of defence in case the situation changes," Podolyak said.

As per Podolyak, their operations to defend Bakhmut has "achieved its goals" as it has exhausted Russia's "main combat-ready" units and provided the opportunity to train "tens of thousands of Ukrainian troops to prepare a counteroffensive."

He stated that "even if at some point the military leadership decides to withdraw to more advantageous positions", defending Bakhmut will be a "great strategic success" for the Ukrainian army.

"However, to date, no such decision has been made" by the military head, stated Podolyak.

Meanwhile, the head of Wagner's private army, which is fighting for Russia, said that it is not getting the required ammunition from Moscow, as it continues to make attempts to gain control of Bakhmut.

"There is a consensus among the military on the need to continue defending the city and the attrition of enemy forces while building new lines and lines of defence in case the situation changes," Podolyak said. As per Podolyak, their operations to defend Bakhmut has "achieved its goals" as it has exhausted Russia's "main combat-ready" units and provided the opportunity to train "tens of thousands of Ukrainian troops to prepare a counteroffensive." He stated that "even if at some point the military leadership decides to withdraw to more advantageous positions", defending Bakhmut will be a "great strategic success" for the Ukrainian army. "However, to date, no such decision has been made" by the military head, stated Podolyak. Meanwhile, the head of Wagner's private army, which is fighting for Russia, said that it is not getting the required ammunition from Moscow, as it continues to make attempts to gain control of Bakhmut. Russia-Ukraine war | Operations to defend embattled Bakhmut will go on, says Zelensky

The fractious and divided opposition parties of Turkey finally came together on Monday and selected Kemal Kilicdaroglu as their candidate for fighting the upcoming presidential election in May against incumbent President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Kilicdaroglu is the leader of the Republican People's Party (CHP), the main secular opposition party. According to the polls, the country is set to witness a tight race amid polarisation after Erdogan's authoritarian rule of two decades.

The country's economic crisis and the errors of the government during the massive earthquakes in February, are likely to make Erdogan more vulnerable compared to the previous elections.

Kilicdaroglu, a bookish former civil servant, was cheered on by a huge crowd of supporters after the six-party opposition alliance chose him as the presidential candidate.

Known as "Gandhi Kemal" or "Turkey's Gandhi" for his stark resemblance to Indian civil rights leader Mahatma Gandhi, Kilicdaroglu gives a different vision in both style and substance compared to that of fiery Erdogan.

However, some of the allies fear that the 74-year-old and soft-spoken Kilicdaroglu lacks crowd-pulling power. He assured his supporters that he would govern the country through consultation and consensus.

"Our table is the table of peace. Our only goal is to take the country to days of prosperity, peace and joy,” he said. He added that Turkey would again have a parliamentary system under his reign, which was changed by Erdogan to a presidential system in 2018.

Turkey's pro-Kurdish HDP co-leader Mithat Sancar said that the party would support Kilicdaroglu after "clear and open" talks.

Opposition chooses 'Turkey's Gandhi' Kemal Kilicdaroglu to fight Erdogan in election

A fixed-wing robotic aerial platform is being developed by a team of scientists from the Moscow Aviation Institute (MAI) along with Indian specialists to study the atmosphere and surface of Mars, said Yelena Karpovich, MAI junior researcher in charge of the project’s UAV general and aerodynamic designing.

She added that they will be testing the technology demonstrator by late 2024. "The Mars robotic flying craft is being engineered by an international team that comprises computational fluid dynamics specialists from the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur," said Karpovich, Russian news agency TASS reported.

The project is aimed at developing the fixed-wing aerial platform that could claim its niche along with other Mars research probes, she said.

The scientists started the work on the Marsoplane in April 2022 after the Russian Science Fund approved the funding request. Karpovich said that the technology demonstrator will be tested by a team of scientists by the end of next year.

"By the end of 2024, the Russian side will have to publish ten articles, build and successfully test the technology demonstrator," she stated.

Karpovich pointed out that the major obstacles in the project are getting the specifics of the Martian climate and atmosphere and preparing the UAV to deal with the rarified atmosphere and dust storms of Mars

"The specifics of the Martian atmosphere complicate the designing of the effective lifting surfaces and restrict us in choosing the powerplant. Dust storms require thoroughly designing protection for the systems and equipment and the flight profile of the flying craft with a small wing load," she said.

The researcher added that it is important to find the method of placing the UAV in the nose cone of the carrier rocket.

"For this reason, our UAV must be either very compact or have a folding or soft structure design (an inflatable or self-hardening wing)," Karpovich stated.

She stated that the research mission of the project is being jointly developed by the Space Research Institute within the Russian Academy of Sciences.

"Presently, together with specialists of the Space Research Institute, we continue discussing research tasks for UAVs and their relevant devices and flight profile, as well as areas on Mars that are of interest for studies. A resident in Florida - who was infected with a rare brain-eating amoeba - has died, confirmed officials. Health experts in southwest Florida's Charlotte County said that most probably the victim got infected after using tap water to rinse nasal sinuses.

The brain gets infected by Naegleria fowleri through the nose. The officials said that drinking tap water is not dangerous.

As per the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the infection almost turns fatal for the patients. The victim has not been identified by the officials.

On February 23, the Florida Department of Heath stated that the patient was infected "possibly as a result of sinus rinse practices" using tap water.

On Thursday, the state health agency's spokesperson confirmed the death of the patient. Officials across different government agencies are "continuing to investigate how this infection occurred," spokesperson Jae Williams said.

He stated that officials are "working with the local public utilities to identify any potential links and make any necessary corrective actions".

Typically, an amoeba survives in warm fresh water like ponds, lakes and swimming pools.

If the amoeba enters through the nose, it can cause a severe infection. However, if it enters through the mouth, it is normally safe, because the single-cell microorganism is killed by the stomach acid.

People who get infected suffer from a disease called primary amebic meningoencephalitis. The patients suffer from headache, fever, nausea, vomiting, disorientation, a stiff neck, a loss of balance, seizures and/or hallucinations.

As per the CDC, every year around three Americans get infected and often face deadly consequences. Between 1962 and 2021, four out of 154 people infected with brain-eating amoeba survived in the US.

According to CDC data, infection in winter months is very rare. Officials warned people against rinsing out their nasal passages with untreated tap water, to avoid infection. People are advised to use sterile or distilled water.

According to officials, it is advisable to use tap water if it is boiled for one minute before being cooled for use.
