Australia's former defence minister Peter Dutton said that the nation is losing interest in purchasing British nuclear submarines and is thinking about buying the ones made in America instead.

Dutton, who was the country's defence minister until 10 months ago and led the government's decision of acquiring nuclear-powered submarines, reportedly said that he has been informed about various hurdles in purchasing a British submarine.

The problems include the UK's weak production capacity and compatibility issues of a British-designed submarine with those operated by the United States, which is Australia’s closest defence ally.

As per the news report, the latest operational nuclear-powered submarine of the United States, Virginia-class is the rival of the UK.

The comments of Dutton came as Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese gears up to travel to Washington this month. He, along with UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and US President Joe Biden, is likely to talk about the “optimal pathway” for Australia to replace its ageing fleet of diesel-electric submarines, which have been built locally.

As per the Aukus defence pact which was signed by Australia with the UK and the US in late 2021, eight nuclear-powered submarines, of either British or US design or a combination of the two, will be acquired by Australia.

The vessels will cost around $AUD100 billion (£56 billion).

However, the comment made by Dutton did not go down well with Australia’s Defence Minister Pat Conroy who accused the former defence minister of undermining the new submarine programme's confidence and said that the classified information he had received as a defence minister was misused by him.

He said that funds have been running low and “that’s why they’ve (the Russian government) already begun to shake us down”, according to a Bloomberg report.

He stated that Russia has been facing “serious” pressure because of western sanctions and that Moscow and its businesses need to look to other countries which have “serious resources” to invest.

“Now, for the next 25 years, we will think more about our Asian past," he added.

The comment comes amid warnings of the European ratings agency Scope that the budget deficit of Russia may increase to 3.5 per cent of gross domestic product (GDP), in comparison to the government’s forecast of 2 per cent of GDP. The official shortfall of 2.3 per cent was recorded in 2022.

Scope stated that the fall was a result of lower revenues from oil and gas exports, as the West distanced itself from Russian energy.

Russia likely to run out of money next year, claims oligarch Oleg Deripaska

The Little Mermaid statue, which is one of the most notable landmarks in Copenhagen, Denmark, was vandalised with colours of the Russian flag painted across its base.

On Thursday night, the colours of the Russian flag - white, blue and red - were daubed on the rock on which the heroine's statue from Hans Christian Andersen’s fairytale rests.

Copenhagen police stated that they visited the scene and “a case of vandalism” was recorded and now they were making attempts to find “traces” in the area.

The police have started investigating the act of vandalism which is being seen as an expression of support for Russia's war against Ukraine.

The vandalised statue was photographed by a few puzzled tourists on Thursday morning.

The Little Mermaid statue, which has taken inspiration from a character of the same name in the Danish author Hans Christian Andersen’s 1837 fairytale, weighs 175kg (385lb) and has been sculpted by Edvard Eriksen.

According to Andersen's tale, the mermaid, who is the daughter of a mythical sea king, falls in love with a prince and wishes to become human.

The statue, which is kept in Langelinie's relatively secluded harbour in Copenhagen, has been vandalised several times. In 1964, the mermaid’s head was stolen, and her arm was removed in 1984. In 1998, her head was again removed by vandals, but it was returned later, before getting blown off her perch in 2003.

The statue has been painted several times, most recently in 2020, when a mysterious inscription of a “racist fish” was added to it.

SpaceX, the rocket company of Elon Musk, on Thursday launched a four-person crew on a mission to the International Space Station, starting their six-month stay in space.

The SpaceX launch vehicle, which is carrying NASA astronauts Stephen Bowen and Woody Hoburg, the United Arab Emirates Sultan Al-Neyadi and Russian cosmonaut Andrey Fedyaev, lifted off from NASA’s Kennedy Space Centre in Cape Canaveral, Florida on Thursday at 12:34 am ET.

The Crew Dragon, which was carrying the astronauts, got detached from the rocket after it reached orbit, and as per estimates, it will spend about one day manoeuvring through space before it gets linked up with the space station. As per scientists, the capsule should dock at 1:17 a.m. ET Friday.

The launch of Crew Dragon on Thursday was the second attempt to blast off the mission, called Crew-6, into space. The first launch attempt failed on Monday.

During the live broadcast of the launch, officials stated that ground systems engineers had decided to call off the launch when less than three minutes were left on the clock.

The engineers stated that an issue was detected with a substance called triethylaluminum triethylboron, or TEA-TEB, which is a highly combustible fluid that is used to ignite the engines of Falcon 9 rocket at liftoff.

As per NASA, the problem started as the fluid moved from a holding tank on the ground into a “catch tank”. “After a thorough review of the data and ground system, NASA and SpaceX determined there was a reduced flow back to the ground TEA-TEB catch tank due to a clogged ground filter,” as per an update shared by NASA on its website early on Wednesday.

SpaceX international crew blasts off for space station mission

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said that the country's worst-ever rail disaster, in which 43 people died, was a result of "tragic human error".

The prime minister gave the statement after he visited the accident site where a freight train and a passenger train had a head-on collision on Tuesday night.

"Everything shows that the drama was, sadly, mainly due to a tragic human error," said PM Mitsotakis, in a televised address. He called the collision of trains “a horrific rail accident without precedent in our country,” and pledged to carry out a full, independent investigation.

PM Mitsotakis said that the government must provide aid to the injured and help in identifying the dead. “I can guarantee one thing: We will find out the causes of this tragedy, and we will do all that’s in our power so that something like this never happens again,” said Mitsotakis.

"Justice will do its job. People will be held accountable, while the state will be on the side of the people,” he added.

Transport minister resigns, stationmaster arrested

The stationmaster at the last stop of the train in Larissa was arrested by authorities and charged with manslaughter. The officials did not release the name of the man or the exact reason for his arrest, however, the stationmaster is being held responsible for rail traffic on the tracks in that particular stretch.

On Thursday, the stationmaster will appear before a prosecutor and explain how the passenger train received permission to run on the line on which a freight train was running from the other side.

However, the stationmaster has denied any wrongdoing and is blaming the tragic accident on a possible technical failure.

Meanwhile, Greek Transport Minister Kostas Karamanlis submitted his resignation. Announcing his decision of stepping down from his position, the transport minister said, "When something so tragic happens, it is impossible to continue and pretend it didn't happen."

Protests and strikes

On Wednesday evening, people protested at the Thessaloniki train station and outside the offices of the railway's Italian operating company, Hellenic Train, in Athens where rocks were thrown by people at the police and building.

A silent vigil was held by demonstrators in Larissa and white roses were brought to make the word Tempe, which is the name of the valley where the accident took place.

A 24-hour strike was announced by the union representing train workers for Thursday, while left-wing groups' members protested in Athens. A 24-hour strike was also called by Athens metro workers who claimed that they faced similar problems as railway employees.

Rescue efforts continue

Cranes and other heavy machinery were used by emergency workers to move large pieces of the collided trains to take out more bodies and body parts.

“It’s unlikely there will be survivors, but hope dies last,” said rescuer Nikos Zygouris.

Larissa’s chief coroner, Roubini Leondari said that she has been handed over 43 bodies for examination and they would need DNA identification as most of them were largely disfigured. “Most (of the bodies) are young people. They are in very bad condition,” she said.

The rescuers present at the accident site said that they have not dealt with a disaster of this magnitude before. Many charred bodies could not be recognised and few passengers were identified through their body parts.

"I've never seen anything like this in my entire life," said a rescue worker. Many people are still missing, which includes two Cyprus nationals.

The police said that they have collected 17 biological samples from remains which will be matched with 23 relatives.

Announcing his decision of stepping down from his position, the transport minister said, "When something so tragic happens, it is impossible to continue and pretend it didn't happen." Protests and strikes On Wednesday evening, people protested at the Thessaloniki train station and outside the offices of the railway's Italian operating company, Hellenic Train, in Athens where rocks were thrown by people at the police and building. WATCH | Train crash in Greece - at least 36 killed in head-on collision Rescue efforts continue Cranes and other heavy machinery were used by emergency workers to move large pieces of the collided trains to take out more bodies and body parts. Greece train collision due to 'tragic human error', claims Greek PM Mitsotakis

A Bolivian man claimed that he went missing in the Amazon rainforest alone for a month where he ate worms and insects, used boots to collect water and drank his own urine to survive.

If the claims of the man are confirmed, Jhonatan Acosta, aged 30, would become one of the longest-ever lone survivors of Amazon.

“It helped a lot to know about survival techniques: I had to consume insects, drink my urine, eat worms,” he said while speaking to Unitel TV on Tuesday. “I was attacked by animals,” he added.

At the end of January, Acosta's family reported that he has gone missing. He had gone on a hunting trip to the Amazon rainforest with four friends but somehow got separated from his trip members on January 25. Last Saturday, almost a month later, he was discovered by the search and rescue teams.

Acosta said that it rained for around half of the month. He added that to collect whatever rainwater was possible, he used his rubber boots. However, when there was no rain, he was forced to drink his own urine.

“I asked God for rain. If it hadn’t rained, I would not have survived,” Acosta said. Acosta added that he walked for about 40km (25 miles) in the hope to find a civilisation but soon realised that he had been going around in circles.

According to reports, the man lost 17kg and dislocated his ankle during his stay in the Amazon rainforest. He was exposed to all wild elements at night and was bitten by different creatures.

Acosta's sister Miladde Acosta said that her brother “had to fight with a pig, which is a wild and dangerous animal”, and a tiger lurked nearby, reported CBS.

'Ate worms, drank urine': Man tells a tale of survival in Amazon forest for 31 days

In 1995, the remains of a woman were discovered by recyclers inside the refrigerator, which was partially submerged in a northern California canal.

The authorities, who refer to the crime as “Lady in the fridge” case, had described the dead body to be of a woman, between the age of 29 and 41 years, with strawberry blond hair. The body had remained underwater for several months.

For the next three decades, investigators continued to make efforts to identify the woman, but in vain. However, last week, a major breakthrough was achieved by the sheriff’s office in the case.

“It is with a tempered heart that I announce we have identified a young woman found 27 years ago who was murdered in our county. Her name is Amanda,” announced Patrick Withrow, the San Joaquin county sheriff.

The sheriff’s office partnered with a Texas-based company, Othram Forensics, to build a DNA profile and the forensic genetic genealogy was used to come up with leads, after which the remains were finally identified as those of Amanda Lynn Schumann Deza.

The dead woman, Deza, was a mother of three who had disappeared at the age of 29, as stated by the investigators. In 1994, she was last spotted with a man she had met at a rehab facility in Napa, which is 80 miles away from where the recyclers had found the remains eventually.

The authorities stated that nobody had filed a missing person report for Deza, who they stated was facing “challenging times” before she died.

The authorities made the breakthrough in the case with the help of her daughter Veronica Tovar who made a contribution to the DNA sample to confirm the remains found were indeed those of her mother.

“I’ve lived my whole life just not knowing. She was gone and I just never knew why. I thought that she just left us. I felt left,” the 34-year-old daughter said.

‘Lady in the fridge’ case: Victim identified using DNA sample 27 years after body’s discovery

A Jurassic-era giant insect, which was missing from at least half a century in eastern North America, has been again spotted clinging to the Walmart big box's side in Arkansas.

The giant lacewing's identification as Polystoechotes punctata in Fayetteville, Arkansas sent scientists into raptures.

The re-appearance of a species which was present in abundance in the dinosaur age but was believed to have disappeared from North America's large swaths has led to speculations that the species' entire population may be hidden in Ozark mountains' remote areas.

Penn State’s insect identification lab's director Michael Skvarla found the giant lacewing. This week, in a report published on the university's website, he said that the discovery was made by him in 2012 when was studying as a doctoral student at the University of Arkansas.

“I remember it vividly, because I was walking into Walmart to get milk and I saw this huge insect on the side of the building,” said Skvarla.

“I thought it looked interesting, so I put it in my hand and did the rest of my shopping with it between my fingers. I got home, mounted it, and promptly forgot about it for almost a decade,” he added.

In a co-authored paper which was published recently in the Proceedings of the Entomological Society of Washington, Skvarla stated that they had incorrectly labelled the specimen in his personal collection as an “antlion”, which is an insect with similar features.

The lacewing got the correct designation in late 2020 when Skvarla was teaching biodiversity to a Zoom class during the Covid lockdown.

As the teacher along with students stared at the microscopic images, they discovered that the specimen had been wrongly labelled.

“All of a sudden, out of nowhere, this incredible new record pops up,” Louis Nastasi, a student, told Adrienne Berard, who wrote the Penn State report.

More than half of the households in Argentina plunged into darkness for two hours after the national electricity grid was affected by the fire on Wednesday. The capital city Buenos Aires, along with other major cities and large areas in the countryside, were partly or wholly affected.

As per reports, the fire started in open fields, affecting the important power lines in the coastal zone as a nuclear power station went offline. The electricity was restored in the capital city at about 6:00 pm (2100 GMT) as lights flickered in the metro system, and gradually the public services were restored.

The reports of the first power outages surfaced from 4:00-5:00 pm local time, as traffic lights went out of order and metro stations in Buenos Aires went into total darkness.

UK authorities on Wednesday said that the body of a baby was discovered in southern England's woodland area, which is close to where they had arrested aristocrat Constance Marten and her partner, who is a sex offender, earlier this week over concerns for the welfare of their child.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Detective Superintendent Lewis Basford of the Met’s East Area Command said, “It is my very sad duty to update that this afternoon, police officers searching a wooded area close to where Constance Marten and Mark Gordon were arrested, discovered the remains of a baby.”

“A post-mortem examination will be held in due course,” the statement added. Earlier this week, police arrested Marten, 35, and Gordon, 48, after the couple went missing in early January. It was believed that the couple was travelling with a newborn.

London’s Metropolitan Police released a statement on Tuesday in which it said that the couple had been “initially arrested on suspicion of child neglect,” but were later “further arrested on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter”.

Over 200 officers used sniffer dogs, drones, police helicopters and thermal imaging cameras to assist them on the ground as they searched for the missing baby after the couple was found and arrested in Brighton, southern England on Monday.

Basford said that they have established a crime scene around the infant remains, where they expect the work to “continue for some time”.

“This is an outcome that myself and the many officers who have been part of the search, had hoped would not happen. I recognise the impact this news will have on the many people who have been following this story closely, and can assure them that we will do everything we possibly can to establish what has happened,” he said.

The police started a search for the couple and newborn in early January as several appeals were released by them and a £10,000 ($12,090) reward was offered for providing any information that would lead to the missing couple and newborn's discovery.

Romania Prime Minister Nicolae Ciuca presented to the world his “new honorary adviser”, which is an artificial intelligence assistant called “Ion”, whom the prime minister hailed as the first-of-its-kind in the world.

Ion, which has been developed by Romanian researchers, will have the main task of scanning the social networks and then informing the government “in real time of Romanians’ proposals and wishes”, said Ciuca on Wednesday.
