Two parents were arrested by the police in Pennsylvania, United States&nbsp;after the authorities discovered seven children living in what they termed as “unsanitary” and “unsafe living conditions”, which included faeces on the floor of the home and caged rats.

The police reached the house after someone reported on April 23 about three children who were seen entering an abandoned trailer in West Rockhill Township, located 40 miles north of Philadelphia, as per a police affidavit filed on May 19.

When the children were found by the police, they spoke to their parents and sent them back to their home which was next to the abandoned trailer.

In the house, the police officers observed “deplorable living conditions” and found a refrigerator which was secured using a padlock.

The mother, identified as Crystal Robertson, said to police that the refrigerator was locked because the children were “'stealing’ everything and referred to the children as ‘garbage disposals with legs',” as per the police affidavit. The police stated that the parents are facing felony charges.

Later, when the police officers returned to the home for a report with Bucks County Children and Youth Social Services Agency, they found four more children inside the house.

In one of the rooms, they discovered approximately two dozen rats in cages, as per the affidavit. They also found faeces on the floor in another area of the house.

“There was also a bad odour… and several bugs,” read the affidavit. They also found “two dogs, two turtles, two rabbits, snakes, toads, and a four-foot reptile”, read the affidavit.

The police took the children into protective custody and sent them to a hospital for receiving medical treatment.

Later, an investigation revealed none of the seven children had gone to school and were lacking basic knowledge, as per the police authorities. The children also exhibited social anxiety, stated the police.

The government authorities stated that through medical evaluations it was concluded that the children were “clinically underweight and malnourished.”

“Personal hygiene of the children was also found to be concerning, resulting in two of the children having to shave their hair due to severe matting,” as per a news release from the Pennridge Regional Police Department.

Police arrest parents after 7 kids found living with caged rats, faeces

India's External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has said the country is facing a "very complicated challenge" from China, and that steps have been taken by the government to ensure no attempts are made to unilaterally change the status quo in the border areas.

On Saturday, Jaishankar added that this challenge has been "very visible" for the last three years in border areas, adding that both nations need to find an equilibrium in the relationship, however, it cannot be achieved just on the terms proposed by the other party.

“If peace and tranquillity between the two nations is disturbed, their relationship will not remain unaffected,” the minister added in his speech on 'Modi's India: A Rising Power' at the Anant National University.

"When I talk about big powers, of course, we have a particular challenge from China. That challenge is a very complicated challenge, but in the last three years it has been particularly visible in the border areas," Jaishankar stated while referring to the incursions of China in eastern Ladakh.

"There are clearly responses that are required, and those responses have been undertaken by the government. And a lot of it to ensure that no attempt is made to unilaterally change the status quo in the border areas," he added.

<h2>'India, China need&nbsp;to find some equilibrium'</h2>

“The two countries will have to find some kind of equilibrium, and all the past governments in their own ways tried to find a balance. But that balance cannot be on the terms of the other party. Then it is not a balance. There has to be something mutual. Mutual respect, sensitivity and interest have to be the basis of the relationship,” the external affairs minister stated.

"How can we get along long term if you don't respect me, if you are not sensitive to my concerns, if you ignore my interest?" he quizzed, further stating that if India will receive respect, sensitivity and recognition, then the country can hope for a better relationship with China.

"But if we do not, I think we need to stand up for our rights, and we need to be firm in asserting opposition. And that, unfortunately, currently is the situation," he stated.

<h2>On India's neighbouring countries</h2>

Speaking about India under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Jaishankar emphasised the strengthening of relations with neighbouring countries.

“Neighbours like Bangladesh, Nepal and Bhutan, which have always been close to India, are today linked with us through roads, railway, waterways and electricity grid connections. The linkage and perception today of India in the neighbourhood has changed, and nothing illustrated that more dramatically than what happened to Sri Lanka last year when it went through a very deep economic crisis," he stated.

"And we have actually stepped forward in a way in which we ourselves never have before. What we have done for Sri Lanka is bigger than what the IMF has done for Sri Lanka," Jaishankar added.

Hundreds of tourists gathered at the Benedictines of Mary, Queen of Apostles Monastery which is in rural Missouri to witness the dead body of a nun who is showing no signs of decay even around four years after her death, stated Catholic News Agency.

The dead body of Sister Wilhelmina Lancaster, who died in 2019 at the age of 95, was exhumed “roughly four years later” so that it can be shifted to its final resting place which was in the monastery chapel, reported the Catholic News Agency.

When the authorities unearthed the coffin, they found the body of Lancaster apparently “incorrupt”, which is referred to as the body's preservation from normal decay in the Catholic tradition. The remains did not decay even though the body was not embalmed and kept in a wooden coffin, according to the news outlet.

The discovery captured the attention of some members of the church and prompted an investigation. The Diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph issued a statement about the discovery.

“The condition of the remains of Sister Wilhelmina Lancaster has understandably generated widespread interest and raised important questions,” stated the diocese.

“At the same time, it is important to protect the integrity of the mortal remains of Sister Wilhelmina to allow for a thorough investigation… Bishop (James) Johnston invites all the Faithful to continue praying during this time of investigation for God’s will,” he added.

The statement issued by the diocese noted that “incorruptibility” is very rare, and a “well-established process to pursue the cause for sainthood,” however, the process has not started in Lancaster’s case.&nbsp;

<h2>Dead bodies remaining well-preserved not very uncommon, says experts</h2>

The Catholic News Agency reported that the authorities have canonised 100 incorruptible bodies after their bodies defied the natural process of decaying. However, experts claimed that it is not very uncommon for dead bodies to remain well-preserved, especially in the initial years after death.

Speaking to CNN, Western Carolina University Associate Professor and Director of Forensic Anthropology Nicholas V Passalacqua said, “It’s hard to say how common this is, because bodies are rarely exhumed after burial. But there are many famous cases of well-preserved human remains. Not just things like Egyptian mummies which were intentionally preserved, but also things like the Bog Bodies of Europe which were very well preserved for thousands of years because they were in environments with low oxygen that restricted bacterial grown and access of the remains to scavengers.”

Passalacqua further noted, “In general, when we bury a body at our human decomposition facility, we expect it will take 5 years for the body to become skeletonised. That is without a coffin or any other container or wrapping surrounding the remains. So for this body, which was buried in a coffin, I personally don’t find it too surprising that the remains are relatively well preserved after four years.”

Till May 29, the body will be laid out in the sisters’ chapel when the sisters plan a rosary procession. After the procession, the body of Sister Wilhelmina will be encased in glass near the altar of St. Joseph in the chapel.

The incident has taken place at a time when the country is implementing stricter rules for tourists who are caught misbehaving.

The South Asian nations have seen a rise in the number of foreign visitors who are deported for making gestures or engaging in actions that appear offensive to the religious sensibilities of Balinese Hindus, according to the outlet.

Speaking to South China Morning Post, Police spokesman Stefanus Satake Bayu said, "The foreigner is depressed because she has no money to finance her stay in Bali."

<h2>No charges against the tourist</h2>

The Indonesian police further stated that Tuschinski was roaming naked around the resort's guest areas, she was staying. However, the police have decided not to press any charges against the tourist.

Brazil's President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on Friday announced that the city of Belem, which is located on the border of Amazon, will be hosting the COP30 round of global climate talks in 2025.

The second most populous city in Brazil's Amazon after Manaus, Belem, has earlier hosted games of the 2014 World Cup.

"I am convinced that it will be a great event... the world will love the people of the state of Para" of which Belem is the capital, stated the president in a video shared on social media.

Lula had earlier pledged to make efforts to bring the UN climate talks to a city in the largest rainforest in the world.

Last year, the leftist leader participated in the COP27 in Egypt as president-elect and pledged to recommit the nation to fighting the climate crisis.

"I already participated in this conference (Conference of the Parties or COP) in Egypt, in France, and everyone was talking about the Amazon. So I said: 'Why not hold the conference there, so you know where the Amazon is?'" Lula added while speaking about his offer to host the COP30 meeting.

<h2>UN approves Brazil's bid for COP30</h2>

Meanwhile, Brazil's Foreign Affairs Minister Mauro Vieira stated that the biz of Brazil to host COP30 was approved by the UN on May 18 after the request was submitted by Lula during last year's COP27 meeting held in Egypt.

In the same video, the Governor of Para Helder Barbalho said that it is a "great privilege for the whole country" to host the event and added that it "increases the responsibility" of the country's climate agenda, regarding the environment and the rights of indigenous people, as reported by CNN.

In 2019, Brazil was chosen as the host for the COP meeting, however, the country withdrew its offer just after Lula's far-right predecessor Jair Bolsonaro got elected and came to power.

Bolsonaro has been called a climate change sceptic and faces the accusation of dismantling environmental protections when he was in power.

Lula, who began his third term as Brazil's president in January, has made the promise to stop illegal deforestation in the Amazon by 2030.

The COP meeting is scheduled to take place in Dubai this year.

COP is the annual United Nations Climate Change Conference in which states hold discussions and agree on the steps to be taken to deal with the environment.

The climate summit last year saw negotiators from around 200 countries take the historic step of agreeing to establish a “loss and damage” fund which is meant to help vulnerable nations cope with climate disasters and agreed that the world needs to decrease greenhouse gas emissions by almost half till 2030.

Brazil's President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on Friday announced that the city of Belem, which is located on the border of Amazon, will be hosting the COP30 round of global climate talks in 2025.

"I already participated in this conference (Conference of the Parties or COP) in Egypt, in France, and everyone was talking about the Amazon. So I said: 'Why not hold the conference there, so you know where the Amazon is?'" Lula added while speaking about his offer to host the COP30 meeting. UN approves Brazil's bid for COP30 Meanwhile, Brazil's Foreign Affairs Minister Mauro Vieira stated that the biz of Brazil to host COP30 was approved by the UN on May 18 after the request was submitted by Lula during last year's COP27 meeting held in Egypt. A supermassive black hole was found by astronomers at the heart of an ancient galaxy which is five times bigger than the expected size, on the basis of the number of stars it contains.

The immense black hole was spotted by researchers in a galaxy called GS-9209, which lies 25 billion light-years away from Earth, making it one of the farthest to have been discovered and recorded.

The team of astronomers at Edinburgh University, with the use of the James Webb space telescope (JWST), observed the galaxy and revealed fresh information about its history and composition.

Dr Adam Carnall, who headed the team, said that the telescope, which is the most powerful ever built, helped them see how galaxies were growing more “larger and earlier” than what astronomers expected in the universe's first billion years.

“This work gives us our first really detailed look at the properties of these early galaxies, charting in detail the history of GS-9209, which managed to form as many stars as our own Milky Way in just 800mn years after the big bang,” he stated.

Carnall added the “very massive black hole” spotted at the centre of GS-9209 was a “big surprise” that appeared to be supporting the theory that such enormous black holes stopped the formation of stars in early galaxies.

“The evidence we see for the supermassive black hole was really unexpected,” Carnall said. “This is the kind of detail we’d never have been able to see without JWST,” he added.

Edinburgh's former PhD student and now a professor of observational cosmology at the University of Groningen in the Netherlands, Karina Caputi, had discovered the GS-9209 galaxy in 2004.

While GS-9209 contains around as many stars as are present in our home galaxy along with a combined mass which is equivalent to 40 billion suns, the galaxy's size is only one-tenth of the Milky Way.

The galaxy is one of the earliest known examples of the ones that have stopped forming stars, stated the researchers.

“The fact (that the black hole) is so massive, means it must have been very active in the past, with lots of gas falling in, which would have shone extremely brightly as a quasar,” said Carnall said. “All that energy spewing out from the black hole in the centre of the galaxy would have seriously disrupted the whole galaxy, stopping gas from collapsing to form new stars,” he added.

Three Chinese ships, including the aircraft carrier Shandong, crossed the Taiwan Strait on Saturday, stated the island's Ministry of National Defence.

"A (People's Liberation Army Navy) flotilla of three ships, led by the Shangdong aircraft carrier, passed through the Taiwan Strait around noon today... to the west of the median line, heading northward," the ministry said in a statement while speaking about the unofficial border in the middle of the strait.

The allegations are the latest uptick in the escalating military tensions over the island which Beijing claims as its own territory.

The ministry stated that the Shandong, which was commissioned in 2019, sailed around midday in a northerly direction through the strait sticking to its median line, which marks the unofficial barrier between the two countries.

The defence ministry of China did not respond to the allegations and the armed forces of the country did not mention about any sailing on their official social media channels.

Last month, the Shandong participated in the Chinese military drills around Taiwan, operating in the western Pacific. In March 2022, the Shandong sailed across Taiwan Strait, just hours before the US and Chinese presidents were due to talk.

Chinese aircraft carrier Shandong, two other ships sail through Taiwan Strait: Report

The passenger who was detained for opening the emergency door of Asiana Airlines flight mid-air told police that he did it minutes before the plane was about to land in Daegu, South Korea, on Friday because he was feeling "uncomfortable", reported Yonhap News Agency.

The man, who is in his thirties, said to the police that he opened the emergency door because he "wanted to get off the plane quickly", stated Yonhap, citing the Daegu Dongbu Police Station.

“He felt the flight was taking longer than it should have been and felt suffocated inside the cabin," a Daegu police detective said

He added that he was "under stress after losing a job recently".

The man had suddenly opened the emergency door when the flight was still about 700 feet (213m) above the ground which caused panic among the passengers onboard.

The man faces up to 10 years in imprisonment for violation of aviation safety laws.

<h2>Police continue to carry out investigation</h2>

Nine passengers had to be admitted to the hospital after they complained about facing breathing issues. All the passengers were discharged from the hospital after two hours, said a fire department official.

The police have been planning to arrest the man after investigations conclude, stated Yonhap.

Former Korean Air cabin safety official Jin Seong-hyun said that as far as he is aware, the case was unprecedented, however, passengers have earlier opened emergency exits while the plane was on the ground, without any authorisation.

On Friday, a South Korean transport ministry official stated that passengers can open emergency exits at or near ground level due to the similarity in the pressures inside and outside the cabin.

"It was chaos with people close to the door appearing to faint one by one and flight attendants calling out for doctors on board," said a 44-year-old passenger while speaking to Yonhap.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis hauled $8.2 million in fundraising in the first 24 hours after he announced his candidacy for the presidential elections, confirmed his campaign to Fox News on Thursday.

The Republican's blockbuster fundraising is a move by his election campaign to showcase the strength and enthusiasm that people have for DeSantis as he steps into GOP 2024 nomination race where United States former president Donald Trump has been the clear front-runner, as per the latest polling.

The money raised by the Republican has topped the previous record of $6.3 million which was hauled by President Joe Biden when he was a White House candidate in the first 24 hours after the launch of his campaign in 2019.

The fundraising by DeSantis includes online contributions along with funds brought in by bundlers who had gathered at a DeSantis donor summit held in Miami, Florida on Thursday.

The media of North Korea called the plans of South Korea, Japan and the United States to share real-time data on the missile launches by the regime of Kim Jong-un as “sinister measures” as the Jong-un government lashed out at South for carrying out live-fire exercises with the US.

The leaders of the US, Japan and South Korea met at the G7 summit in Hiroshima, Japan and discussed new co-ordination in the wake of illicit nuclear and missile threats from North Korea.

A series of missile and weapons tests have been undertaken by North Korea in recent months, the most recent being in a new solid-fuel intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM).

The missile and nuclear weapons programmes of North Korea are banned by the UN security council.

<h2>US and South Korea start live-fire exercises</h2>

The US and South Korean forces started the live-fire exercises on Thursday, which simulated a "full-scale attack" launched by North Korea, which they called as the biggest such drill to display the "overwhelming" military capability of the South against the growing threats of North.

Howitzers were fired in Pocheon's mountainside near North Korea's fortified border. Meanwhile, manoeuvring battle tanks fired their guns at the targets, which sent dust, smoke as well as shockwaves across the valley.

Around 2,500 troops from the United States and South Korea participated in the exercises. These exercises will be carried out four more times from now until mid-June, stated South Korea's defence ministry.

"The exercise demonstrated our military's capability and readiness to strongly respond to North Korea's nuclear and missile threats and to a full-scale attack," the ministry added in a press release, vowing to maintain "peace through overwhelming strength".

<h2>
North Korea's first military spy satellite</h2>

Last week, the state media of North Korea reported that final approval was given by their leader Kim Jong Un for final preparations for launching the country's first military spy satellite.

Kim stated that it is important for the country to counter threats from South Korea and the US. Analysts stated that the satellite will improve the surveillance capability of North Korea which will enable it to hit targets more accurately when it engages in a war.

In recent commercial satellite imagery, progress made on the new launch pad in the satellite launching station of North could be seen, with activity appearing to be carried out with a "new level of urgency” for the launch, stated the US-based monitoring group 38 North.
