This ancient plant grows in Namibia and lives for nearly 2,000 years. It has only two long leaves and a unique growth pattern.

Ashwagandha increases the production of collagen and helps in nourishing the skin. It also renews the dead cells.

Ginseng roots are filled with compounds which help in slowing the loss of collagen and retain the skin's elasticity. They boost the production of collagen and further increase the blood circulation.

The curcumin found in turmeric decreases oxidation and inflammation which helps in repairing tissue and increases collagen.

Moringa are rich in vitamin C and help in increasing collagen. They make skin look plumper and tighter and increase blood circulation.

Ginger is filled with antioxidants which increase healthy blood in our body and boost the production of collagen.

In a major breakthrough, scientists have recreated a chemical reaction which may have led to the creation of complex, self-replicating structures which eventually developed into living things on Earth.

As per one school of thought, before the DNA-based life's current era, there was a type of molecule known as RNA (or ribonucleic acid). RNA, which has continued to remain a crucial component of life till today, has the potential of replicating itself and catalysing other chemical reactions.

However, RNA molecules are made from smaller components known as ribonucleotides. Scientists have been trying to find out how these building blocks came into existence early on Earth and then combined into RNA.

A chain of reactions is being recreated by the chemists which is needed to form RNA that leads to the emergence of life.

Speaking about recreating the chain of reactions, PhD Candidate in Prebiotic Chemistry, UNSW Sydney Quoc Phuong Tran said, “We know whatever chemical reaction created ribonucleotides must have been able to happen in the messy, complicated environment found on our planet billions of years ago.”

Autocatalytic reactions and their part in creating life

“I have been studying whether "autocatalytic" reactions may have played a part. These are reactions that produce chemicals that encourage the same reaction to happen again, which means they can sustain themselves in a wide range of circumstances,” he added.

These comments of Phuong Tran were published in an article in The Conversation.

“In our latest work, my colleagues and I have integrated autocatalysis into a well-known chemical pathway for producing the ribonucleotide building blocks, which could have plausibly happened with the simple molecules and complex conditions found on the early Earth,” the chemist stated.

Emphasising the importance of autocatalytic reactions, he stated that they play important roles in biology which can vary from regulating our heartbeats to creating patterns on seashells.

“In fact, the replication of life itself, where one cell takes in nutrients and energy from the environment to produce two cells, is a particularly complicated example of autocatalysis. In our study, we tried adding another simple molecule called cyanamide to the formose reaction. This makes it possible for some of the molecules made during the reaction to be "siphoned off" to produce ribonucleotides,” he stated.

The attention of the world has been drawn to the meeting between US President Joe Biden and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping during the Asia Pacific Economic Co-operation (APEC) forum in San Francisco amid efforts by Washington and Beijing to deescalate the geo-economic tensions between them.

This was the second in-person dialogue of Biden with Xi since the US president assumed office in 2021. India's Union Minister Piyush Goyal will also be attending the Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation meeting in the United States.

Other leaders who are attending the summit are Japan’s Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, and Indonesia’s President Joko Widodo. Since Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, President Vladimir Putin has not participated in any major international summits and here also he is being represented by Deputy Prime Minister Alexei Overchuk, against whom no sanctions have been issued by the US.

When was APEC formed and who are its members?

The Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation (APEC) is a regional economic forum and was formed in 1989. It has 21 members in its groups, however, India is not one of them.

The grouping stated that its aim was to “leverage the growing interdependence of the Asia-Pacific and create greater prosperity for the people of the region through regional economic integration”.

The grouping's current members are Australia, Brunei, Hong Kong (which the APEC website refers to as Hong Kong, China), New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, Indonesia, China, Japan, South Korea, Russia, Canada, the United States, Mexico, Peru, Chile, Malaysia, Vietnam, Singapore, Thailand and Chinese Taipei (Taiwan).

The focus of APEC has been on trade and economic issues and hence, it terms the countries as “economies”. Taiwan and Hong Kong, which China has continued to claim as its own, take part separately in the grouping.

As per a report published by Reuters, APEC accounts for nearly 62 per cent of global GDP and nearly half of global trade. It has been operating on the basis of non-binding commitments with decisions taken through commitments and consensus undertaken on a voluntary basis.

Why is India not a part of the APEC grouping?

In 1991, India made a request to become a part of the grouping. It was the same year when liberalisation was introduced in the Indian economy which changed its trajectory in entirety.

Although many members have been in favour of the inclusion of India, some even opposed the idea citing the economic reforms which took place in the country and claiming that it has 'protectionist instincts'.

Another reason for not making India part of the grouping was a membership freeze which came into force in 1997 but was not extended in 2012.

What role has APEC played so far?

Since its formation, the grouping championed the lowering of trade tariffs, free trade, and economic liberalisation. As per the US State Department, “During its first five years of operation, APEC established its core objectives. In the 1991 Seoul Declaration, APEC member economies proclaimed the creation of a liberalised free trade area around the Pacific Rim as the principle objective of the organisation.”

The experts at the think tank Centre for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), in an article, stated, “The dynamic growth attributable to APEC initiatives contributed significantly to the development of a growing middle class in the developing Asia-Pacific region. APEC economies’ 2.9 billion citizens make up roughly 60 per cent of global GDP. As of 2018, they represented 48 per cent of global trade.”

What is the aim of the APEC summit this year?

The APEC Economic Leaders' Week is being held this year in San Francisco. According to a report by Reuters, the United States has chosen the theme "Creating a Resilient and Sustainable Future for All" for APEC 2023.

It stated that the summit aims for an "interconnected, innovative, and inclusive" region and "to advance a free, fair, and open economic policy agenda that benefits US workers, businesses, and families."

Till 2021, APEC members have been seven of the top 10 overall trading partners of the United States and Washington is likely to increase the relative strength of its economy in tough times.

While speaking about what he aims to achieve in his dialogue with Jinping ahead of the meeting, Biden had said he wanted "to get back on a normal course of corresponding; being able to pick up the phone and talk to one another if there's a crisis; being able to make sure our (militaries) still have contact with one another."

In a mind-baffling discovery, scientists have found that a supernova explosion billions of light-years away was so powerful that it 'temporarily destroyed' some of the Earth’s Ozone layer in 2022.

On October 9, 2022, the telescopes captured a jet of high energy photons which were moving towards Earth. This was evidence of the explosion of a supernova which was 1.9 billion light-years away.

Such astronomical events are called gamma-ray bursts and the astronomers who have studied them thoroughly called them the “brightest of all time”.

In the latest discovery, it was found that this burst led to a measurable change in the number of ionized particles which were found in the upper atmosphere of the Earth, which included ozone molecules that readily absorb harmful solar radiation.

“The ozone was partially depleted — was destroyed temporarily,” stated Pietro Ubertini, who is an astronomer at the National Institute of Astrophysics in Rome, which worked towards the discovery of the atmospheric event.

The effect could be seen for some minutes before the ozone layer quickly repaired itself, so it was “nothing serious,” stated Dr Ubertini. However, he added that if a supernova occurred closer to us, then “it would be a catastrophe”.

The discovery, which was reported on Tuesday (Nov 14) and was published in the journal Nature Communications, showed how explosions which occurred far from our solar system have the capability to influence the atmosphere which can be used as a giant detector to find an extreme cosmic phenomena.

Gamma rays can damage the Ozone layer for days or months

It is known that gamma-ray bursts ionize molecules at the bottom of the ionosphere. However, this is the first time scientists proved that the entire ionosphere can be affected by such cosmic explosions, as per Laura Hayes, a solar physicist at the European Space Agency, as reported by The New York Times.

Dr Hayes stated that it is uncommon for faraway cosmic phenomena to create such massive atmospheric disturbances. “Fortunately for us, this gamma-ray burst was extremely distant, making its effects more of a scientific curiosity than a threat,” she added.

As per Dr Ubertini, if the gamma-ray burst is a million times larger, it can ionise enough ozone, weakening the protective barrier for days or months.

A Boeing 747, which had departed from New York's John F Kennedy International Airport and was en route to Liege, Belgium, was forced to return on November 9 after a horse went loose inside the cargo hold.

The horse, which momentarily ran away from its stall onboard, was euthanised because of the extent of its injuries, as per reports.

The cargo flight, which was being run by charter airline Air Atlanta Icelandic, had climbed nearly 31,000 feet when Air Traffic Control was contacted by the crew in Boston and the issue of escape of horse was reported.

“We don’t have a problem (…) flying-wise,” stated one of the pilots, in a video which was shared by the YouTube channel “You Can See ATC,” but “we cannot get the horse back secured".

Speaking to CNN, a representative from Air Atlanta Icelandic confirmed that the information shared in the “You Can See ATC” video is correct.

Horse jumped after turbulence struck the flight

The horse was one of the 15 animals being transported to Liege, which is Europe's import hub.

As per John Cuticelli, head of the corporation responsible for operating animal quarantine and export at John F Kennedy International Airport, turbulence struck the flight shortly after its takeoff.

The horse got spooked by the turbulence hit and jumped halfway over the stall's high front barrier and was hung up, with his hind legs trapped on the stall's inside and his front legs on one side of the barrier.

“The horse jumped and managed to get its two front legs over the (front) barrier and then got jammed. It’s only the second time in all the years I’ve been doing this that I’ve ever seen that happen. And we do thousands of horses a year. A very unfortunate event — but that horse was spooked," Cuticelli stated.

In the recordings shared, Air Traffic Control was heard granting the request of the pilot to return to JFK Airport. The pilot also demanded that a veterinarian be sent inside the plane after it lands because “we have a horse in difficulty.”

Cuticelli stated, “We dispersed veterinary care, animal handlers, medical equipment, horse slings, a horse ambulance, everything necessary to accommodate that horse. We had to take the other horses out to get the equipment in to get the horse out."

Cuticelli said that once the animal was present on the ground, it was euthanised as it was found that its injuries were too severe to survive.

The security forces of Israel have claimed to have found a Hamas-operated tunnel which apparently leads to a hospital in Gaza as reports suggested that medical facilities became inoperative in the Gaza Strip amid the ground operations.

A military spokesperson stated that the tunnel is next to a Hamas operative's house who headed the naval operations of Hamas which led the October 7 raids on Israel.

Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari stated that Rantisi Hospital is just 200 yards (183 metres) away, as he tried to prove that the Hamas militants have been operating from the hospitals.

Lubna Nazir Shaboo and her daughter Karima reached Egypt on Monday evening (Nov 13) after crossing the Rafah border between Egypt and Gaza. "They are in al-Arish (a city in Egypt). Tomorrow morning (Tuesday) they will move to Cairo," stated Lubna's husband Nedal Toman, in a text message sent to the Indian news agency PTI from Gaza.
