One of Donald J Trump's most trusted executives pleaded guilty to conspiring with Trump's company to carry out a long-running tax scheme, a confession that painted a damning picture of the former president's family business but did not advance a larger investigation into the man himself.

The executive, Allen H Weisselberg, is required to testify at the company's trial if prosecutors choose to call him, and to admit his role in conspiring with Trump's company to carry out the tax scheme, as part of the plea agreement with the Manhattan district attorney's office. That testimony could tip the scales against the Trump Organization as it prepares for an October trial on the same charges.

Weisselberg pleaded guilty to 15 felonies and admitted he failed to pay taxes on $1.7 million in income, which included luxury perks like rent and utilities for a Manhattan apartment, leases for two Mercedes-Benz cars, and private school tuition for his grandchildren.

He admitted hiding those benefits from his accountant in order to underreport his income and knowingly omitting the income from his personal tax returns.

Weisselberg answered the judge's specific questions about the scheme in hushed and barely audible tones, repeatedly saying "Yes, your honour."

He will pay nearly $2 million in back taxes, interest, and penalties as part of the agreement and waive any right to appeal.

Weisselberg will be sentenced after the Trump Organization's trial, according to Judge Juan Merchan. He stated that the deal called for a five-month sentence followed by five years of probation. "I would be at liberty to impose any lawful sentence, which in your case includes imprisonment from 5 to 15 years," the judge warned Weisselberg if he did not meet all of the conditions of the plea agreement.

In response to allegations that references to drugs were made at a party she attended, Prime Minister Sanna Marin (SDP) said she is willing to take a drug test if necessary.

"I have nothing to hide. I have never taken drugs, "she said.

Marin's remarks come after opposition Finns Party chair Riikka Purra called on her to voluntarily take a drug test during an interview with Helsingin Sanomat (in Finnish). Mikko Kärnä, an MP with Marin's coalition partners, the Centre Party, made a similar call on Twitter (siirryt toiseen palveluun).

At Kuopio Airport, where she was attending her party's summer congress, Marin told journalists that she didn't understand why she was being pressured to take a drug test.

"I have seen no evidence that anything has been used anywhere," she said.

Sanna Marin apologised last year for going clubbing after coming into contact with a COVID-19 case.

Sanna Marin went out for a night on the town in Helsinki just hours after her foreign minister tested positive.

She was told she didn't need to isolate because she was fully vaccinated, but she later missed a text advising her to do so.

Critics had questioned her decision not to isolate herself until the testing results were negative.

During a lecture on 'India's Vision of the Indo-Pacific' at Bangkok's prestigious Chulalongkorn University, Jaishankar also stated that the Quad, which includes the United States, India, Japan, and Australia,&nbsp;is the most prominent plurilateral platform that addresses contemporary challenges and opportunities in the Indo-Pacific.

"This is about recognising the realities of globalisation and the consequences of rebalancing. Only those whose mindsets are built around spheres of influence and uncomfortable with the democratisation of world affairs will dispute the Indo-Pacific today," he said.

"We envisage a free, open, inclusive, peaceful, and prosperous Indo-Pacific region built on a rules-based international order, sustainable and transparent infrastructure investment, freedom of navigation and overflight, unimpeded lawful commerce, mutual respect for sovereignty, peaceful resolution of disputes, as well as equality of all nations," the minister said.

He also sought to advance the long-delayed India-Myanmar-Thailand Trilateral Highway, which he emphasised during his recent visit to Cambodia, as New Delhi plans to extend the highway all the way to Phnom Penh.

The trilateral highway, which is currently experiencing significant delays, will connect Moreh in Manipur to Mae Sot in Thailand via Bagan in Myanmar.

"While continuing our efforts to find a solution, we remain on the side of our Ukrainian friends," Erdogan said.

His talks with Zelensky and visiting UN chief Antonio Guterres—both men's first since Russia's February invasion—came with global alarm rising about fighting that has raged around Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant.

The Russian-held facility has been experiencing days of shelling.

"We are worried. We do not want another Chernobyl," said the Turkish leader.

Erdogan only mentioned Putin once in his comments to reporters.

"We discussed the exchange of prisoners of war and our initiatives in this regard," Erdogan said.

"We will continue to talk about that with Putin."

Chinese officials swabbing fish mouths, underside of crabs for Covid: Report

The Kozhikode sessions court in the Indian southern state of Kerala granted anticipatory bail to writer and social activist Civic Chandran in a sexual harassment case, observing that the charge under Section 354 (A) (sexual harassment) of the Indian Penal Code would not be attracted if the woman was wearing "sexually provocative" dress.

On August 12, Chandran, who had included photographs of the complainant in his bail application, was granted anticipatory bail. He had previously obtained anticipatory bail in another sexual harassment case on August 2.

The alleged incident occurred on February 8&nbsp;this year&nbsp;at a camp convened by Chandran and others near Koyilandy in Kozhikode district, according to the prosecution. Chandran allegedly groped her and inappropriately touched her when the participants were returning from the camp.&nbsp;

On July 29, the woman filed a complaint, and Chandran was charged under sections 354A (2), 341 and 354 of the IPC.

Along with the bail application, the 74-year-old accused produced photographs of the woman.

Granting anticipatory bail to Chandran, the district sessions judge S Krishna Kumar said, “In order to attract Section 354 A (sexual harassment), there must be physical contact and advances involving unwelcome and explicit sexual overtures. There must be a demand or request for sexual favours. There must be a sexually-coloured remark. The photographs produced with the anticipatory bail application by the accused reveal that the complainant herself is exposing in dresses which are sexually provocative. Section 354 A will not prima facie stand against the accused.”

Chandran has been accused of sexual harassment in two cases, one by a writer from a Scheduled Tribe community who accused him of sexual harassment during a book exhibition here in April.

The other was filed by a young writer who accused him of sexual harassment at a local book fair in February 2020.

The Koyilandy police had filed cases against Chandran but had been unable to apprehend him as he remained at large since the first case was filed.

On August 2, Chandran was granted anticipatory bail in the first case.

According to a report by Indian news agency PTI, in an order dated August 2, the sessions judge granted bail to 74-year old social activist and writer Civic Chandran in a case under the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act (SC/ST Act) by saying that offences under this statute would not prima facie stand against him as he was fighting against the caste system.

What is the Rohingyas' residential flats controversy in India?

Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, India's foreign minister, said on Wednesday that his country is closely following developments involving a Chinese military ship moored in Sri Lanka.

"What happens in our neighborhood, any developments which have a bearing on our security, obviously are of interest to us. "I think our spokesmen said a while ago that we are obviously monitoring any development that has bearing on our interest very, very carefully," Jaishankar said at a press conference convened by Thailand and India's foreign ministries in Bangkok.

Despite objections from India and the US, Sri Lanka authorised China's dual-purpose navy monitoring vessel, Yuan Wang 5, to dock at the southern Hambantota Port, which is under Chinese control on a 99-year lease.

According to a Sri Lankan Foreign Ministry statement, India and the United States did not provide "concrete reasons" to reject entry, therefore Yuan Wang 5 was permitted to berth after being held back for a few days for consultations.

Despite objections from India and the US, Sri Lanka authorised China's dual-purpose navy monitoring vessel, Yuan Wang 5, to dock at the southern Hambantota Port, which is under Chinese control on a 99-year lease. According to a Sri Lankan Foreign Ministry statement, India and the United States did not provide "concrete reasons" to reject entry, therefore Yuan Wang 5 was permitted to berth after being held back for a few days for consultations. The statement underlined that the clearance was conditional on the Chinese vessel not doing any'research' (spying?) while in Hambantota and would only stop to refill its supplies. According to foreign security analysts, the Yuan Wang 5 is one of China's most advanced space-tracking ships, designed to follow satellite, rocket, and intercontinental ballistic missile launches. Two ministers met on Wednesday to discuss areas of cooperation such as tourism, commerce, and cyber security. The two nations also agreed on significant infrastructure projects, such as motorways connecting India, Myanmar, and Thailand, but acknowledged that there are many obstacles to surmount, particularly given Myanmar's ongoing political uncertainty. Don Pramudwinai, Thailand's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Dr Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, India's Minister of External Affairs, are co-chairing the 9th Thailand-India Joint Commission. North Korea fired two cruise missiles Wednesday, Seoul's defence ministry said, ending a month-long lull in Pyongyang's record-breaking spate of weapons tests this year.

"Early this morning, we detected that North Korea fired two cruise missiles into the West Sea from Onchon, South Pyongan province," a ministry official told AFP.

"The US and South Korean military authorities are analysing detailed specifications such as flight distance."

North Korea has not tested a cruise missile -- which are not banned under United Nations sanctions on the country -- since January, the Yonhap News Agency reported.

The last time Pyongyang conducted a weapons test was July 10, when they fired what appeared to be multiple rocket launchers.

North Korea has conducted a blitz of sanctions-busting tests since January, including firing an intercontinental ballistic missile at full range for the first time since 2017.

Washington and Seoul officials have also warned that the isolated regime is preparing to carry out what would be its seventh nuclear test.

Earlier this week, South Korean and American military troops kicked off preliminary drills ahead of the start of their annual combined Ulchi Freedom Shield (UFS) exercise. 
 
The drills infuriate Pyongyang, which views them as a rehearsal for invasion.

Multiple instant noodle makers have asked Thailand's government this week to allow them to charge more for their products in order to cover rising costs, potentially paving the way for the first price increase in the staple in 14 years.

Thai law regulates the price of instant noodles and other staples. According to Reuters, five noodle brands, including Wai Wai, Mama, and Japan's Nisshin, have requested approval from the Commerce Ministry to raise their prices from 6 baht ($0.17) to 8 baht ($0.23).

Despite requests, the government previously denied price increases to some companies.

Thailand's government will reportedly consider proposals on a case-by-case basis, and any solution must be a win-win for both consumers and producers, according to Thailand's Director-General of Internal Trade, Wattanasak Sur-iam, in a statement.

Five major producers of instant noodles have requested price increases, citing rising production costs as a reason for the increase in one of the country's most popular grocery items.

According to The Guardian, the war in Ukraine, as well as droughts and floods over the past year, has caused wheat, energy, and transportation costs to skyrocket, affecting noodle prices across Asia.

In Thailand, where inflation reached 7.61% in July, down from a 14-year high the previous month, the Thai government imposes price controls on certain essential goods to relieve consumer pressure. According to the report, price caps are placed on items such as eggs, cooking oil, and noodles, which are popular among many as a cheap and convenient meal.
