Officials said on Wednesday that a wave of arson and bombing attacks hit Thailand's southernmost provinces overnight, which have been the site of an active Muslim separatist insurgency for nearly two decades.

According to military spokesman Pramote Promin, at least 17 attacks occurred on Tuesday night in Pattani, Narathiwat, and Yala provinces, mostly at convenience stores and gas stations. Three civilians were reported injured. There have been no claims of responsibility.

Since the insurgency began in 2004, more than 7,300 people have been killed in the three provinces, which are the only ones in Buddhist-dominated Thailand with Muslim majorities. Attacks have also occurred in neighbouring Songkhla province.

Muslim residents in Thailand have long complained that they are treated as second-class citizens, and separatist movements have been active on and off for decades. Heavy-handed repression has fueled the unrest.

The attacks are the most high-profile since the Thai government and BRN—Barisan Revolusi Nasional Melayu Patani, believed to be the largest of several insurgent groups—agreed to a cease-fire during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan in early April. In other recent violence, two Thai army ordnance experts on duty were killed later that month by a bomb.

According to Pramote, the attackers "dressed up as women, used motorcycles, and, in many cases, threw petrol bombs into the target sites" on Tuesday night.

Captain Sarayuth Kotchawong of the Yala Police Department said he received a report shortly before midnight that a suspect had entered a convenience store at a petrol station in Yala's Yaha district, placed a black bag inside, and warned employees to leave if they "did not want to die." The workers left 10 minutes before the bag exploded.

The Malaysian Barisan Revolusi Patani is an Islamist Patani independence movement in northern Malaysia and Patani, southern Thailand. It is also known by the abbreviation Barisan Revolusi Nasional (BRN), which means "National Revolutionary Front." It is the most&nbsp;dangerous terror group in the region as of 2017.

The BRN was founded as a roughly territorial organisation that prioritised Pattani secessionism. However, since 2001, the BRN-C (BRN-Coordinasi) has become its most active wing, leading the insurgency in southern Thailand and imposing extreme religious values on local society.

The BRN-C, through its paramilitary wing "Pejuang Kemerdekaan Patani," is the main group responsible for the murder of teachers in the Southern Border Provinces.&nbsp;

The UN's new special envoy for Myanmar began meetings with top junta officials on Wednesday but did not respond to questions about whether she would seek to meet ousted leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

Noeleen Heyzer's visit to the crisis-wracked country, which began on Tuesday, "will focus on addressing the deteriorating situation and immediate concerns as well as other priority areas of her mandate," the UN has said.

Heyzer did not respond to AFP questions on whether she would meet Suu Kyi on Wednesday as she left her hotel in a motorcade escorted by police and plainclothes security forces.

Suu Kyi, 77, has been detained since the military's coup and on Monday received another prison term in a secretive junta court -- raising her total sentence to 17 years.

Heyzer was set to meet the junta's foreign affairs minister and chief Min Aung Hlaing later on Wednesday, spokesman Zaw Min Tun told a press conference.

"We are hoping to get good results (from the meeting)" he said.

Myanmar has been embroiled in turmoil since the military seized power in February 2021, prompting fierce resistance and spawning informal militias.&nbsp;

Over 2,200 people have been killed and over 15,000 arrested in the military's crackdown on dissent, according to a local monitoring group.

Diplomatic efforts to resolve the crisis led by the UN and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations regional bloc have made little headway, with the generals refusing to engage with opponents.

Last month the junta triggered renewed international condemnation when it executed Phyo Zeya Thaw, a former lawmaker from Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy party, for offences under anti-terrorism laws.

Singaporean sociologist Heyzer was appointed by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres last year, replacing Swiss diplomat Christine Schraner Burgener.

Schraner Burgener had called for the UN to take "very strong measures" against the military and was the target of regular broadsides in Myanmar's state-backed media.

Military leaders blocked her from visiting the country, where she had hoped to meet with Suu Kyi.

In December state media reported the junta had closed her Myanmar office, saying her work in Myanmar had "concluded".

There have been no reports in state media about whether Heyzer will be allowed to open an office in the country.

Rights groups said they had little optimism her visit would persuade the military to end its bloody crackdown and engage in dialogue with opponents of its coup.

"UN envoys have visited when the military told them to, stayed where the military told them to, met who the military arranged for them to meet and then left when the military told them to," tweeted Mark Farmaner, director of the Burma Campaign UK.

Nusantara, which is 2,000 kilometres (1,200 miles) from Jakarta, is set to become the new political centre of the world's fourth-largest country.&nbsp;

It is a legacy project of President Joko Widodo, but environmentalists have warned it could accelerate the destruction of tropical jungles home to long-nosed monkeys and orangutans.

The government is preparing to ramp up infrastructure projects to open the doors to the city—which will cover about 56,180 hectares (216 square miles) on Borneo island by the time Widodo leaves office in 2024.&nbsp;

"The main point (of the ceremony) is to take the spirit of the 77th Independence Day to strengthen our resolve and spirit to build the new capital," said State Capital Authority head Bambang Susantono, who will govern the new city.&nbsp;

After the national flag was hoisted by officials to mark the occasion, workers at the site cheered in unison that they were "ready to develop Nusantara," which means archipelago in Indonesian.

Jakarta is home to 30 million people in its greater metro area, and it has long been plagued by serious infrastructure problems and flooding exacerbated by climate change.

It is sinking as much as 25 centimetres (10 inches) a year in some areas -- double the global average for major coastal cities -- with some experts predicting up to a third of the megalopolis could be underwater by 2050.

Government officials say the new capital will take decades to be fully completed and inhabited by its planned population of two million people and will help spread economic growth to an underdeveloped region.&nbsp;

Among these are old bridges that have been concealed from view for decades, as well as forgotten communities that were drowned while reservoirs were built.

The impacts have been visible on land as well, with parched lawns at grand mansions throughout the country revealing historic gardens that had been paved and grown over during the previous three centuries.

Longleat in Wiltshire, for example, has seen the traces of long-lost buildings, paths, fountains, and parterres from the 1600s become evident in the intense heat.

For those with a great interest in history, this should be a once-in-a-lifetime chance to witness these historical relics in some of Britain's most famous locales.

The 17th century settlement of West End, which was submerged when the Thuscross Reservoir was filled in, has resurfaced.

Water levels in Derbyshire's Ladybower Reservoir have dropped so low that tourists can see remnants from the former settlements of Ashopton and Derwent, which were both submerged when the reservoir was constructed in 1946.

When the water level in the reservoir is low, old buildings become apparent, as was most recently observed in 2018 amid equally dry conditions.

Severn Trent, which manages the reservoir, reports that it is now at little over 50% capacity.

The world's busiest international airport handled 14.2 million passengers in the three months to the end of June, up almost 191 percent year on year, continuing growth for nine straight quarters since the start of the coronavirus epidemic, state-owned operator Dubai Airports said on Wednesday.

The airport's resurgence, which serves as the hub for long-haul carrier Emirates, coincides with a robust rebound in foreign traffic. According to the International Air Transport Association (Iata), international traffic increased by approximately 230 percent year on year in June, aided by the relaxation of travel restrictions in most Asia-Pacific regions.Passenger volumes more than doubled to 27.9 million in the first half of the year, according to Dubai Airports, compared to the same period last year. This is 1.2 million fewer than the previous year's total annual traffic at the airport.

The airport exceeded 67.5 percent of its pre-pandemic passenger throughput in the first half of 2019.Despite "unprecedented challenges" and "macroeconomic factors" affecting the global economy and tourism sector, Dubai's Department of Economy and Tourism (DET) reported 7.12 million international visitors in the first half of 2022, nearly three times the 2.52 million recorded in the same period the previous year.

Dubai Airports now anticipates 62.4 million passengers in 2022, up from an earlier figure of 58.3 million in May. DXB remained India's leading source country in terms of passenger counts, with traffic hitting 4 million passengers in the first half of the year, fueled mostly by key metropolitan destinations such as Mumbai, Delhi, and Hyderabad. Saudi Arabia came in second with 2 million passengers, followed by the United Kingdom with 1.9 million.

The top three destinations were London (1.3 million passengers), Riyadh (910,000 passengers), and Mumbai (760,000 passengers). Despite the disruption, huge queues, and delayed luggage at major European and American airports, DXB stated that 96% of travelers waited less than five minutes at the exit passport control.

The average wait time at the security checkpoint on departure was less than three minutes for 97 percent of all passengers.Cargo volumes for the first six months of the year declined roughly 19% year on year to 910,075 tonnes in the air freight market. According to Dubai Airports, DXB's cargo traffic suffered during the second quarter as major freight operators returned to Dubai World Central (DWC) in March.

Furthermore, overall cargo volumes were impacted by a lower capacity during the northern runway restoration operation, which ran from May 9 to June 22, because a large amount of cargo traffic at DXB is carried in the belly-hold of passenger aircraft, according to the report.

Dubai airport passenger number triples to 14.2 million in Q2, up 230% on year

Former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin seems to be on the ballot in November's general election after clinching one of four seats fighting for a seat in the United States House of Representatives.

Palin, who rose to prominence as John McCain's running mate more than a decade ago, advanced to the main election with her two opponents, Nick Begich III, a tech tycoon endorsed by the Alaska Republican party, and Mary Peltola, a former state senator and Democrat. It was too soon to call the fourth position.

Palin, Peltola, and Begich are vying for Alaska's lone House seat, which was formerly held by Don Young, who died in March. The three were also running in a special election to finish Young's term, which ends early next year.

Because Alaska voters are adopting a ranked voting system for the first time, the results of the special election might take several days to be finalised.

Young was elected to the House in 1973 and was the party's longest-serving member, holding the state's lone seat in the body for over 50 years.

Palin, 58, rose to notoriety as McCain's running mate in 2008, when she labelled herself as a "mother bear" and developed a character as a free-lipped loose cannon.&nbsp;

Palin's assaults on the media, racial rabble-rousing, and abandonment of policy or traditional politics in favour of demagoguery opened the path for Trump, who she was an early supporter of.

After her failed 2008 campaign, Palin resigned as governor of Alaska and took a long break from politics due to ethical problems.

She made a comeback this year, appearing alongside Trump at rallies and fundraisers but avoiding typical campaign activities and candidate debates in her home state.

In Alaska, Senator Lisa Murkowski faced 18 rivals, including Trump-backed Senate candidate Kelly Tshibaka, in a nonpartisan primary, with the four candidates receiving the most votes advancing to the general election in November.

The Justice Department has told the federal magistrate judge who approved last week's search of former President Donald Trump's Palm Beach, Florida, home and office that releasing a copy of the sworn statement prosecutors used to apply for a search warrant would jeopardise multiple ongoing investigations and could harm national security.

Although the Justice Department had previously asked the judge to unseal the warrant itself, citing Mr Trump's public comments revealing the search of his property, prosecutors with the department's national security division said in a Monday court filing that they would not support making public the underlying affidavit on which Mr Reinhardt based his decision to allow the search, citing "a very different set of considerations" than whether to unseal the warrant itself.

Prosecutors acknowledged the public interest in getting the sealed affidavit, but stated that the government has a "compelling, overwhelming interest in safeguarding the integrity of an ongoing criminal investigation."

They went on to say that releasing the affidavit would "cause significant and irreparable harm to this ongoing criminal investigation" by revealing "critically important and detailed investigative facts" like "highly sensitive information about witnesses, including witnesses interviewed by the government" and "specific investigative techniques."

Prosecutors also claimed that releasing the search warrant would reveal information that the government is compelled by law to keep secret because it involves grand jury testimony.

The study discovered that the whisker-trimmed group and a control group of mice both exhibited an equivalent interest in the room housing a mouse.

However, the control group spent substantially more time interacting with the new mouse than the previously shaven group, which showed no preference between a familiar and a new mouse.

The results showed that mice that had their whiskers cut between days 12 and 16 of their lives had poorer social interaction at maturity, according to the scientists.

According to Wang, the study, which was published last month in the peer-reviewed journal Molecular Psychiatry, may give insight into the therapy of autism.

"Before the end of this decade, there will be nothing that will not be touched by electronics and the ubiquitous 'chip'. "Be it fighting carbon emissions, renewable energy, food safety, or healthcare, the semiconductor chip will be all-pervasive," said Krishna Moorthy, CEO and President, IESA.

The Indian government has promised a $10 billion investment under its PLI programme for the creation of a semiconductor and display manufacturing electronics ecosystem.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra has defeated at least five other states to get a massive Rs 2.06 lakh-crore investment from the Vedanta Group-Foxconn alliance in Pune's rising semiconductor chip and display fabrication industry.

In terms of revenue, India's end equipment market was worth $119 billion in 2021. From 2021 to 2026, it is predicted to increase at a 19% CAGR.

According to the research, the electronic system design and manufacturing (ESDM) industry in India would play a significant role in the country's overall growth, from component sourcing through design manufacture.
