"We call for the immediate release of all hostages held by Hamas in Gaza now for over 200 days," a statement by the countries said, in what a senior US official called an extraordinary display of unanimity.

"The fate of the hostages and the civilian population in Gaza who are protected under international law is of international concern," the statement added.

However, Hamas said that the group would not concede to international pressure.

All the 18 countries who issued an appeal to Hamas&nbsp;have their citizens held as captives by the Palestinian militant group for more than six months.

"We emphasise that the deal on the table to release the hostages would bring an immediate and prolonged ceasefire in Gaza, that would facilitate a surge of additional necessary humanitarian assistance to be delivered throughout Gaza, and lead to the credible end of hostilities," the statement said.

"Gazans would be able to return to their homes and their lands with preparations beforehand to ensure shelter and humanitarian provisions," it said.

As per the news agency Reuters, senior Hamas leader Sami Abu Zuhri said that the statement would not influence the Palestinian militant group and that the US should push its ally Israel to end its offensive.

"The ball now is in the American court," said Abu Zuhri.

An 18-year-old Israeli hostage, who was held captive by Hamas for about 50 days, on Thursday (Apr 25) revealed that one of the captors of the Palestinian militant group proposed to her for marriage.

Noga Weiss was abducted from her home in Kibbutz Be'eri on October 7 when Hamas launched unprecedented attacks against Israel. She was released in a truce deal last year.

Noga, recalling the incident, said that the captor wanted to marry her and have kids.

“He gave me a ring on day 14 [in captivity], and I stayed with him until day 50,” The Times of Israel quoted Noga as saying.

“He told me, ‘Everyone will be released, but you will stay here with me and have my children’,” she recalled.

“I pretended to laugh so he wouldn’t shoot me in the head,” she further added.

However, Noga's mother Shiri, who was also abducted by the group on Oct 7, rejected the proposal and yelled at the captor until he understood.

Noga was with her parents at home in Kibbutz Be’eri when Hamas militants broke through Israel and held thousands of people hostage.

Her 56-year-old father Ilan left the house at around 7:15 am to join the kibbutz emergency squad. However, he was never heard from again and was later confirmed dead.

“They started shooting at the door, something like 40 shots until they managed to get in. We saw the conversations on WhatsApp and understood what was happening. People were writing that their house was on fire and then stopped answering,” Noga said.

Shiri instructed Noga to hide under the bed thinking that upon barging inside the room the terrorists would not notice the 18-year-old and instead shoot the mother.

“I went under the bed, and they came in and took her. After they took her outside, I heard gunshots. I thought she was murdered and not kidnapped,” Noga said.

Noga, however, reunited with her mother several days later.

Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry quit from his post on Thursday (Apr 25) following which a transitional council came to power in a bid to bring back stability&nbsp; to the country wracked by gang violence.

Henry's former finance minister, Michel Patrick Boisvert, will now take over as the interim prime minister.

"Today is an important day in the life of our dear republic, this day in effect opens a view to a solution... to the multidimensional crises the country faces," Boisvert said after the formal swearing-in of the nine-person transitional council on Thursday morning.

Henry made an official announcement in March declaring that he would step down once the council was in place.

He left Haiti in the month of February in order to seek international help for police in their fight with armed gangs.

However, he was left stranded outside the country as the gangs threatened to take over the capital.

The transitional government's mandate runs until February 2026.

The White House on Thursday (Apr 25) welcomed the announcement stating that the transitional council taking over exhibited a significant step towards fair polls.

Diego Da Rin, an analyst with the International Crisis Group said that even with the recent development, the country would have to go a long way to ensure free elections as there was a rift within the council, with different factions competing for power.

"Despite the installation, there is still a long and rocky road ahead for the council to be able to forge a government," Da Rin said.

"Crucially, the council now needs to vote for one of the nine members to head the body. Then, in time, it must appoint a new non-interim prime minister, a new cabinet, a truth and reconciliation commission and a provisional electoral commission."&nbsp;

Scorching heat prompted school closures in Bangladesh and forced nearly 33 million children out of their classes as parts of the country experienced temperatures surpassing 42C (108F).

Amid the soaring temperatures, thousands of Bangladeshis on Wednesday (Apr 24) gathered to pray for rain.

"Praying for rains is a tradition of our prophet. We repented for our sins and prayed for his blessings for rains," Muhammad Abu Yusuf, an Islamic cleric who led a morning prayer service for 1,000 people in central Dhaka, told AFP.

"Life has become unbearable due to lack of rain," he said. "Poor people are suffering immensely."

As per Bangladesh's weather bureau, average maximum temperatures across Dhaka over the past week rose by over 4-5 degrees (7.2-9 degrees Fahrenheit) Celsius&nbsp;as compared to the 30-year average for the same period.

Authorities had last week ordered&nbsp;schools to suspend classes until the end of the month.

The development came following Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi's three-day visit to Pakistan amid an escalation of tensions in the Middle East.

"Recognising that the irresponsible act of the Israeli regime forces was a major escalation in an already volatile region, both sides called on the UN Security Council to prevent the Israeli regime from its adventurism in the region and its illegal acts attacking its neighbours...," Iran and Pakistan said in their joint statement released by Pakistan's foreign ministry.

Last week, explosions were reported in Iran's Isfahan, what Tehran said was an Israeli attack.&nbsp;

However, Iran said that it has no plans to retaliate against Israel.&nbsp;

The visit by Raisi was aimed at mending ties between neighbouring countries Iran and Pakistan where the Iranian President vowed to give a push to the trade between both countries by $10 billion a year.

"Both sides agreed to increase the volume of bilateral trade to 10 billion U.S. dollars in the next five years," Sharif's office said in a statement after a joint news briefing.

"They also agreed to cooperate in developing joint approaches to confront common challenges including the threat of terrorism," the statement said.
