India on Monday summoned the Canadian deputy high commissioner to register a stern protest over the raising of pro-Khalistan slogans at an event in Toronto, Canada which was attended by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau&nbsp;and other political leaders.

India's Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said that the country's deep concern and strong protest was conveyed.

"The Government of India's deep concern and strong protest was conveyed at such disturbing actions being allowed to continue unchecked at the event. This illustrates once again the political space that has been given in Canada to separatism, extremism and violence," said the Ministry of External Affairs in a statement.

Canadian Deputy High Commissioner Stewart Wheeler was summoned to the External Affairs Ministry over “the raising of separatist slogans on Khalistan&nbsp;at an event which was addressed&nbsp;by the Canadian prime minister”, the ministry said.

“Indian government’s deep concern and strong protest was conveyed at such disturbing actions being allowed to continue unchecked,”&nbsp;the statement said in a reference to the Khalsa Day Parade in Toronto on Sunday afternoon.

"Their continued expressions not only impact India-Canada relations but also encourage a climate of violence and criminality in Canada to the detriment of its own citizens," the statement said,&nbsp;adding that&nbsp;such actions will impact bilateral relations. 
 
The ministry&nbsp;has several times earlier slammed the Canadian government for its failure to curb the activities of pro-Khalistan elements.

The MEA remarks came after Trudeau as well as opposition leader Pierre Poilievre attended the Khalsa Day celebrations in Toronto on Sunday (Apr 28) where loud chants of pro-Khalistan slogans were raised.

As the Canadian prime minister was set to address the public to mark Khalsa Day, the "Khalistan Zindabad" chants got louder, as seen in the video released by Canada-based CPAC TV.

NDP leader Jagmeet Singh and Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow were also present at the event.

<h2>India-Canada diplomatic rift</h2>

The incident also comes amid an ongoing diplomatic rift between India and Canada that was triggered after Trudeau accused New Delhi of killing Khalistani leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar in June 2023.&nbsp;

However, India has strongly rejected the allegations calling them "baseless" and "absurd".

Nijjar was shot dead outside a Gurdwara in Surrey, British Columbia, on the evening of June 18, 2023.

He was designated a terrorist by the National Investigation Agency in the year 2020.

India summons Canada envoy over Khalistan slogans at event attended by PM Justin Trudeau

The United States announced that five Israeli military units had committed grave human rights violations against Palestinians in the West Bank before Hamas launched its assault in the month of October, said the State Department on Monday (Apr 29).

State Department deputy spokesman Vedant Patel said that four out of these five units had taken remedial measures, however, consultations were underway over the fifth unit with the Israeli government.

"After a careful process, we found five Israeli units responsible for individual incidents of gross violations of human rights," Patel said.

Patel said that the violations took place before the Oct 7 Hamas assault and that it was not in the Gaza Strip.

He did not identify the units or specify the measures the Israeli government had taken against them.

As per the news agency AFP, press reports identified a battalion called the Netzah Yehuda comprised mainly of ultra-Orthodox Jews, as the one that was accused of abuses.&nbsp;

US law prohibits the government from funding or arming foreign security forces that have credible allegations of human rights abuses against them.

Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Monday said that he was hopeful Palestinian militant group Hamas would accept an "extraordinarily generous" offer to end the Israeli offensive in Gaza in exchange for the release of hostages.

"Hamas has before it a proposal that is extraordinarily, extraordinarily generous on the part of Israel," Blinken said in Riyadh at the World Economic Forum.

"In this moment, the only thing standing between the people of Gaza and a ceasefire is Hamas," he said.

"They have to decide -- and they have to decide quickly," Blinken said. "I'm hopeful that they will make the right decision."

"We can have a fundamental change in the dynamic" in more than half a year of bloodshed, Blinken said.

The United States has severely denounced Iraq over its new bill criminalising same-sex relationships stating that the new law "threatens those most at risk" in Iraqi society.

US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller, in a statement, warned that the amendment to the 1988 anti-prostitution law could be used to "hamper free speech and expression".

He further said that it would "weaken Iraq's ability to diversify its economy and attract foreign investment."

"We are deeply concerned by the passage of an amendment to existing anti-prostitution and homosexuality legislation in Iraq. This amendment threatens those most at risk in Iraqi society and weakens Iraq’s ability to diversify its economy and attract foreign investment," he wrote in a post on his official X account.

He further said that international business coalitions had already indicated that such discrimination in Iraqi society would harm businesses and economic growth in the country.

Iraq on Saturday (Apr 27) passed a bill criminalising same-sex relationships with a maximum prison sentence of 15 years.&nbsp;

The move was condemned by the rights groups that termed it an "attack on human rights".

The law aims to "protect Iraqi society from moral depravity and the calls for homosexuality that have overtaken the world," said the copy of the law according to news agency Reuters.

Under the amendments to a 1988 anti-prostitution law, transgender people will be sentenced to three years in prison.&nbsp;

The amendments were adopted during a session attended by 170 out of 329 lawmakers.

The move was mainly backed by conservative Shi'ite Muslim parties who form the largest coalition in mainly Muslim Iraq's parliament.

PM Modi says ‘Congress was ready to put blame of 26/11 Mumbai attacks on holy saffron’

The Delhi Police's Special Cell registered an FIR over a tampered video of Union Home Minister Amit Shah after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) claimed that the footage showing Shah making vows to scrap all reservations for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes was false.

"We received a complaint regarding the edited video of the Home Minister. Two complaints were received by police, one from the BJP and another from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). Following this, the Delhi Police Special Cell Cyber Wing's IFSO unit filed an FIR," a source said.

The BJP had earlier alleged that the original footage of Shah had him talk about the removal of a 4 per cent "unconstitutional" reservation for Muslims in Telangana.

However, the saffron party said that the footage, which was from a recent election rally, was edited in a manner where it indicated that the Union Home Minister was advocating the move to scrap reservations for backward groups.

A case has been registered under Sections 153, 153A, 465, 469, 171G of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and section 66C of the Information Technology (IT) Act and a probe has been initiated, said the sources as per Indian news agencies.

"The video seems to be doctored, spreading misleading information with the intention of creating disharmony among communities which is likely to affect public tranquillity and public order issues. It is requested to kindly take necessary legal action as per the provisions of law," the ministry said, as per the FIR, according to IANS.

Australian Defence Minister Richard Marles, during his visit to the city of Lviv, announced a military aid package for Ukraine worth $100 million.

The aid package included short-range air defences, drones along with air-to-ground precision munitions coming separately.

While speaking at a press briefing with Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal, Marles asserted that the military aid by Australia is one of the many contributions set to be made to Ukrainian armed forces in the coming months.

“Today we are announcing the next package of support for Ukraine totalling 100 million dollars. 50 million of that is dedicated to short-range air defence systems. 30 million, as the Prime Minister said, to the purchase of drones as part of Australia being a part of the drone coalition being led by the United Kingdom and Latvia,” Marles said.

"We understand that this will be an enduring conflict and we will be contributing more in the future because we are determined to stand side by side with Ukraine for as long as it takes for Ukraine to prevail," he added.

Australia, on April 17 announced that it would increase the defence spending by A$50.3 billion ($32 billion) in the next 10 years and also make changes in its weapons program emphasising more on missiles, drones and warships as it foresees the possibility of a Pacific conflict between China and the United States.

He said that after the apex court's verdict, the Congress will not be able to make any "excuses" when they lose the elections.

He then took a jibe at the party stating that the Congress is in "panic" mode after the polling in Karnataka during the second phase of Lok Sabha elections on April 26.

While addressing a public meeting in Karnataka's Davanagere, PM Modi said, "The state of Karnataka has created a panic in the Congress party with the voting on April 26...they are very frustrated. Congress is working with all might to ensure that something happens on May 7, and they are at least able to open their accounts...this huge gathering is clearly showing that people of the state will punish Congress for its sins."

"The day is not far when all the internal battles within Congress party will come out on roads.&nbsp;Everyone will be putting the blame of the loss on each other. Earlier, they used to put the whole blame on EVM. They start chanting 'EVM EVM' as soon as the election comes. But, now the Supreme Court has given such a tight slap, that even this excuse can't be given," he added.

Earlier last week, the Supreme Court rejected petitions seeking 100 per cent verification of votes cast on EVMs with paper slips generated through VVPAT&nbsp;(Voter-verified paper audit trail).

The court also rejected the petitioners' plea to return to ballot paper voting on April 26.&nbsp;

The two-judge bench of Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Dipankar Datta delivered a unanimous verdict.&nbsp;

In a veiled jibe at CM Siddarmaiah and Deputy CM DK Shivakumar, he also hit out at the Karnataka government accusing them of giving 2.5 years of chief ministership to its leaders.

"Congress in Karnataka isn't addressing the public but they are trying to see how number one will defeat the number two. Due to their factionalism, nepotism and wrong policies, Congress is playing with the future of the youth, farmers and common people," PM Modi said.

"In Karnataka, they have not told the public, but have decided one will sit for 2.5 years and the other for the next 2.5 years. Now, if they create a system like this, won't the two sabotage each other?," he added.

Calling artificial intelligence one of "the greatest anthropological challenges of our time", she said that it was "crucial to harness the best ethical and intellectual reflections being developed in this field".

She then expressed confidence that the pontiff's presence would "make a decisive contribution to defining a regulatory, ethical and cultural framework for artificial intelligence", appreciating the Vatican's research into the "practical application of the concept of algorethics, i.e. giving ethics to algorithms".

"Our commitment is to develop governance mechanisms to ensure that artificial intelligence is both human-centred and human-controlled," she added.

Earlier this year, the pope had cautioned against the "perverse" threats posed by AI calling for a global treaty to ensure the technology is not being misused.

He published a six-page message where he detailed all the dangers of this technology including disinformation and interference in elections.

Eleven militia fighters working alongside Nigeria's military to battle jihadists were killed Saturday in the country's northeast when their vehicle hit a landmine on a highway near the border with Cameroon, two militia sources told AFP.&nbsp;

Jihadists in Nigeria are increasingly resorting to planting mines on highways to target military and civilian convoys after they were pushed back from territory they once controlled during the early years of the country's more than 15-year Islamist insurgency.

The militia fighters were escorting a civilian convoy from the town of Gamboru in Borno State to the regional capital Maiduguri when around 1230GMT their vehicle drove over a landmine suspected to have been planted by jihadists at Damno village, the two sources said.

"The rear tyres of the vehicle carrying 13 of our comrades hit a wide pothole in which a landmine was buried and it exploded," Shehu Mada, an anti-jihadist militia leader in Gamboru said. "Eleven people in the vehicle were killed while two escaped with injures."&nbsp;

The victims were removed from the remains of the vehicle and returned to Gamboru for burial, said Usman Hamza, another militia who gave the same toll.&nbsp;

Nigeria's militant conflict has gradually eased in intensity as the military carries out offensives against the militants.&nbsp;

The Gamboru to Maiduguri highway is a strategic 140-kilometre (87-mile) trade route in the region, and provides an important link with neighbouring Cameroon.&nbsp;

The highway was reopened in July 2016 after it was shut by the military for two years due to incessant jihadist attacks.&nbsp;

Boko Haram and rival Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) still launch sporadic ambushes on convoys from their hideouts and plant landmines along the highway.&nbsp;

In January, 17 people were killed along the highway in two separate mine blasts that were blamed on jihadists. Ten more people were killed by a landmine in April.

Nigeria's grinding conflict has killed 40,000 and displaced around two million from their homes in the northeast since 2009. The violence has spilled over into neighbouring Niger, Chad and Cameroon.

The recent military coups in Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso and subsequent withdrawal of French and US troops from the Sahel to Nigeria's north have heightened concerns over regional instability and violence extending further into coastal West African states.
