The diplomatic ties between India and Canada are currently witnessing an all-time low after Ottawa accused New Delhi's involvement in the killing Khalistan separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in June last year.

India, however, has strongly rebuffed Canada's claim that Indian agents were involved in the murder, dubbing them "baseless" and "absurd".

Nijjar was shot dead outside a Gurdwara in Surrey, British Columbia, on the evening of June 18, 2023.

He was designated a terrorist by India's National Investigation Agency (NIA) in 2020.

<h2>'Safe haven for terrorists'</h2>

There have been many instances in the past where India has raised concerns to Canada about the growing sentiment of separatism and the Khalistani threat.

Earlier, India's Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) had underlined how terrorists were being provided a safe haven abroad, calling for the government of Canada to act upon it.

"Terrorism is being funded and supported by our western neighbour Pakistan, but the issue of safe havens and places to operate are being provided abroad, including in Canada," the then MEA spokesperson Arindam Bagchi had said.&nbsp;

"We would want the Canadian government to not provide safe havens to terrorists and to take action against those who are facing terrorism charges or send them here to face charges," he added.

West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose on Sunday (May 5) reacting to the molestation allegations levelled against him stated that no inquiry could be conducted against a Governor during their term in office.

He took to his official X account and in a detailed post said, "No criminal proceedings whatsoever shall be instituted or continued against the President, or the Governor of a State, in any court during his term of office and no process for the arrest or imprisonment of the President, or the Governor of a State, shall issue from any court during his term of office."

"It is clear that the State machinery cannot set in motion any sort of criminal proceedings, whatsoever, against the Governor," he said.

He then urged the Raj Bhavan staff to ignore any sort of communication with the police regarding the matter and refrain from giving any statement.

He said that Article 361(2) and (3) of the Constitution of India ensures protection for the President, Governors and Rajpramukhs.&nbsp;

"Since the Governor has been granted constitutional immunity from any criminal proceedings being instituted or continued against him, it logically follows that the police cannot investigate/inquire into the matter in any manner whatsoever," Bose said.

"To say that the inquiry/investigation of the police could continue even during the tenure of the Governor though no court can take cognisance of the final report, would be in derogation of the objective and essence of Article 361 of the Constitution of India. Thus, given the immunity enjoyed by the Governor, the police are constitutionally barred from carrying out any kind of preliminary inquiry, registering a First Information Report," he added.

One of the women employees at the Raj Bhavan on Thursday (May 2) alleged that she was sexually harassed by the West Bengal governor.

West Bengal Minister Chandrima Bhattacharya stated that a woman had lodged a complaint against the governor accusing him of molestation ahead of PM Modi's visit to the state.

"Prime Minister Narendra Modi is arriving in Bengal. His stay has been arranged at the Raj Bhavan. Before this, a woman has gone to the police station to file a complaint against the Governor accusing him of molestation," Bhattacharya said.

"What kind of incident is this, when the Governor says that he will create a 'peace room' and listen to everyone's problems, but here the same Governor is insulting women," she added.

Responding to the allegations, the West Bengal Governor released a statement saying that he will not be oppressed by "engineered narratives" and the "truth shall triumph" after TMC leaders said that a woman employed at Raj Bhavan accused Bose of molestation.

"Truth shall triumph. I refuse to be cowed down by engineered narratives. If anybody wants some election benefits by maligning me, God bless them. But they cannot stop my fight against corruption and violence in Bengal," the Governor said.&nbsp;

Jammu and Kashmir National Conference leader Farooq Abdullah on Sunday (May 5) lashed out at India's Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh over his remarks that "PoK will be merged with India", stating that "Pakistan is not wearing bangles".

"If the defence minister is saying it, then go ahead. Who are we to stop? But remember, they (Pakistan) are also not wearing bangles. It has atom bombs, and unfortunately, that atom bomb will fall on us," he said.

Last month, Singh asserted that taking into consideration the progress India is making, soon the people of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) will express their willingness to be with India.

"Don't worry. PoK was, is and will remain ours," Singh said, addressing a rally at West Bengal's Darjeeling, where the BJP had nominated sitting MP Raju Bista.

"India's power is increasing. India's prestige is increasing around the world, and our economy is fast progressing. Now our brothers and sisters in PoK will themselves demand to come with India," Singh further said.

On being asked about India's plans for PoK during a session in Cuttack, Jaishankar said, "PoK has never been out of this country. It is part of this country. There is a resolution of the Indian Parliament that PoK is very much a part of India. Now, how did PoK, how did other people get control? You know, when you have someone who is not a responsible custodian of a house, someone steals from outside. Now, here you have allowed another country."

Floods and landslides across Kenya have killed 228&nbsp;people since March, with hundreds of thousands forced to leave their homes, the government and Red Cross said on Wednesday, as dozens more were killed in neighbouring Tanzania and Burundi.

In the central Kenyan town of Mai Mahiu, where at least 48 died in flash floods on Monday, two bodies were recovered from the debris on Wednesday, Kenya Red Cross South Rift Regional Manager Felix Maiyo said.

Military personnel accompanied by sniffer dogs had joined the search, Maiyo said. Earlier on Wednesday, government spokesperson Isaac Mwaura said the total death toll had risen by 10 to 179.

Last year's rains followed the worst drought in large parts of East Africa in decades.

In Kitengela, 33 km (20 miles) from Nairobi, Kenya Red Cross workers were helping to rescue residents whose homes were marooned by flood waters.

They were also trying to rescue tourists trapped at camps in Narok, 215 km from Nairobi, the Kenya Red Cross said on social media platform X.

Kenya's national highways authority said it had closed a section of a highway leading to the city and at least three other roads across the country due to flooding and debris.

The disaster prompted Pope Francis to speak out in sympathy with Kenyans during a general audience on Wednesday at the Vatican.

"I ... wish to express to the people of Kenya my spiritual closeness at this time as severe flooding has tragically taken the lives of many of our brothers and sisters, injured others and caused widespread destruction," he said.

The White House on Wednesday extended condolences to victims' families and said the United States is contributing to response efforts through the U.S. Agency for International Development.

"We continue to offer our continued and resolute support to all who have been impacted and are closely monitoring the situation," White House spokesperson Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters at a briefing.

Kenya flood toll rises to 228 as homes and roads are destroyed

Former Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi and Rashtriya Janata Dal's Tej Pratap Yadav courted controversy on Sunday (May 5) for their remarks calling Jammu and Kashmir's Poonch attack "pre-planned".

Channi accused the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of plotting such stunts in order to win the elections.

"This is stuntbaazi. And not the (terror) attacks. When elections come, such stunts are done to make the BJP win. These are pre-planned attacks, there is no truth in them...," alleged the Congress leader while campaigning in Jalandhar, the seat from where he is contesting the polls.

"To kill people and to play with their bodies....BJP knows it...," he claimed.

He further went on to draw a parallel between the Poonch and the Pulwama attack&nbsp;that took place in 2019.

"These attacks are not really happening but just meant to benefit the Bharatiya Janata Party... Whenever elections take place, such stunts are played – like it happened last time," he added in an apparent reference to the Pulwama incident.

<h2>Anurag Thakur slams Congress over remarks</h2>

Union Minister Anurag Thakur slammed Channi over his "ridiculous" remarks and demanded an apology from the grand old party.

"I have a question for Congress: Were the 1962, 1965, and 1971 wars done for winning elections? On such a ridiculous statement, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi should apologise...They question the ability of our forces...How low will Congress stoop? Will Congress insult our Bravehearts for the sake of winning elections?" Thakur said.

Punjab leader Sunil Jakhar, who recently quit Congress and joined BJP, also lashed out at the former Punjab CM, calling his remarks "ghastly."

"Ghastly statement by CWC member Channi belittling the valour of our brave soldiers is no less a crime and an insult to the nation. Channi's shameful statement on the attack on our Air Force personnel in Poonch calling their valour a stunt shows the bankruptcy and frustration of Channi. The nation will not forgive him. Congress and RJD leaders call J&K's Poonch terror attack 'political stunt', stir row

Iran on Friday (May 3) released all the crew members that were aboard the Portuguese-flagged cargo ship MSC Aries. Out of the 25 crew members, 17 were Indians.&nbsp;

The development came following a telephonic conversations between Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian and his Estonian counterpart Margus Tsahkna on Friday.

The two sides discussed the recent state of bilateral ties and regional developments, said the Iranian foreign ministry.

Iran's Revolutionary Guards had seized the ship on April 13 in the Strait of Hormuz.

As per the Iranian state-run IRNA news agency, a Guards helicopter had boarded and taken into Iranian waters the Portuguese-flagged MSC Aries.

Shipping security agencies had earlier reported a vessel being boarded and seized by "regional authorities" in the Hormuz Strait between the United Arab Emirates and Iran.

Earlier, Ann Tessa Joseph from Thrissur in south Indian state of&nbsp;Kerala, who was aboard the Israel-linked cargo ship, had been released and reached back home safely on April 18.

Recently, India's Ministry of External Affairs released a statement sharing an update about Joseph's return which further added that other Indian crew members were safe and that they will be released once their contractual obligations are completed.

"One girl who was there has returned. We had asked for consular access for these 16 people and we received that and our officers met them. Their health is good and there is no problem of any kind on the ship. Concerning their return, there are some technicalities and contractual obligations. Once they are done, it will decide their return," MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal had said in a weekly press briefing on April 25.

Iranian Ambassador to India, Iraj Elahi, had also said that the Indian crew members were not detained and that they were free to go.

Responding to the request of the Estonian side regarding the Portuguese ship, Amirabdollahian said, "The ship, which turned off its radar in the territorial waters of Iran and endangered the security of navigation, is detained under judicial rules."

Earlier today, during the telephone discussion between Iranian and Estonian officials, Iran stated that it "has already released all the ship's crew members on humanitarian grounds, and if the ship's captain accompanies them, the crew including the Estonians can return to their country."

<h2>Lovely wrote letter to Kharge</h2>

Lovely, who stepped down from the post of the Delhi Congress chief on April 28, wrote a letter to Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge citing that he was against the alliance between Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Delhi.&nbsp;

"The Delhi Congress unit was against an alliance with a party which was formed on the sole basis of levelling false, fabricated and malafide corruption charges against the Congress party. Despite that, the party made a decision to ally with the AAP in Delhi...," Arvinder Singh Lovely wrote in his resignation letter.

He further underlined that the remarks made by the North-East Delhi candidate Kanhaiya Kumar where he made "factually incorrect statements" and falsely praised Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, did not go well with the local party unit.

"Such ill-thought and factually incorrect statements have not gone down well with the local party unit since, the local party workers had an inherent understanding that the alliance was not done in appreciation of AAP's false propaganda of the development of Delhi and was in fact, a "compromise&nbsp;to improve the chances of victory for the party as part of the National Alliance," he said.

Voting for all the seven Lok Sabha constituencies in Delhi is scheduled to take place on May 25, which is the sixth phase of the ongoing general elections.

The results of the polls will be announced on June 4.

Paytm's parent company One97 Communications president and chief operating officer Bhavesh Gupta has resigned from the company, an official statement said on Saturday (May 4).

Gupta was steering the lending business, online and offline payments, and compliances, among others, at Paytm. Verticals, headed by him, were adversely impacted by the RBI's ban on Paytm Payments Bank (PPBL) from carrying on new transactions.

"Bhavesh Gupta, President and Chief Operating Officer, who was overseeing the payments and lending businesses, has decided to take a career break due to personal reasons. He will be transitioning to an advisory role, offering guidance for Paytm's growth initiatives until the end of the year," the statement said.

Gupta joined Paytm in August 2020 from Clix Capital, formerly GE Capital. He will be relieved from the services of the company on May 31.

Paytm had estimated a Rs 300-500 crore loss due to the RBI's restriction on PPBL. It had to pause its lending business, which is learnt to have resumed now.

As part of a change in leadership structure, fintech firm Paytm has appointed Rakesh Singh as chief executive officer of Paytm Money.

"Rakesh Singh has recently been appointed as the new Chief Executive Officer of Paytm Money Ltd. With over two decades of experience, Rakesh Singh was previously the CEO of the stock broking business at Fisdom and has held key management positions with ICICI Securities and Standard Chartered Bank," the statement said.

The company has moved Varun Sridhar, who was heading Paytm Money, as CEO of Paytm Services -- which deals in the distribution of mutual funds and other wealth management products.

"I would like to thank Bhavesh for his contributions and his role in ensuring a smooth transition. Our focus on payments and lending is stronger than ever, and I will work with the seasoned leaders that we have in each of our businesses to execute our plans," Paytm CEO Vijay Shekhar Sharma said.

He appreciated Sridhar's contribution in expanding Paytm's role in deepening the penetration of mutual fund and wealth management products in the country.

Paytm COO Bhavesh Gupta quits; company rejigs senior management

The Kolkata Police's Special Enquiry Team (SET)&nbsp;on Saturday (May 4) summoned three Raj Bhawan personnel in connection with the molestation allegations against West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose.

However, none of the personnel showed up for interrogation, reported news agency ANI citing sources.

West Bengal Police have directed the SET authorities to investigate the molestation allegations levelled by a woman employee at Raj Bhawan against Governor CV Ananda Bose.

The team has also asked Raj Bhawan to share the CCTV footage.&nbsp;

However, they have&nbsp;neither received the requested CCTV footage nor did any of the personnel turn up for questioning.

According to the sources&nbsp;the police will once again issue&nbsp;summons, asking them to appear on May 6.

"Hare Street PS had requested 3 Raj Bhawan personnel to come over to the PS this afternoon, to facilitate the enquiry (4th was from KP - who attended). CCTV footage was also asked for. None from Raj Bhawan turned up for enquiry. CCTV footage is yet to be received. We will request again on Monday (6 May)--no other enquiry plan till then," police sources said.

Earlier, Bose had issued an order barring the police and Minister of State for Finance, Chandrima Bhattacharya from entering the Raj Bhavan following the accusations.

The directive said that the entry of West Bengal Minister Bhattacharya into the Raj Bhavan premises of Kolkata, Darjeeling and Barrackpore is banned for "defamation and anti-constitutional media statements".

One of the women employees at the Raj Bhavan on Thursday (May 2) alleged that she was sexually harassed by the West Bengal Governor.

West Bengal Minister Chandrima Bhattacharya stated that a woman had lodged a complaint against the Governor accusing him of molestation ahead of PM Modi's visit to the state.

"Prime Minister Narendra Modi is arriving in Bengal. His stay has been arranged at the Raj Bhavan. Before this, a woman has gone to the police station to file a complaint against the Governor accusing him of molestation," Bhattacharya said.

"What kind of incident is this, when the Governor says that he will create a 'peace room' and listen to everyone's problems, but here the same Governor is insulting women," she added.

Responding to the allegations, the West Bengal Governor released a statement saying that he will not be oppressed by "engineered narratives" and the "truth shall triumph" after TMC leaders said that a woman employed at Raj Bhavan accused Bose of molestation.

"Truth shall triumph. I refuse to be cowed down by engineered narratives. If anybody wants some election benefits by maligning me, God bless them. But they cannot stop my fight against corruption and violence in Bengal," the Governor said.&nbsp;

Russia has reportedly opened a criminal case against Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and put him on its list of wanted criminals, the state news agency TASS reported on Saturday (May 4).

Ukraine, however, dismissed the reports calling it a sign of Russia's "desperation".

Zelensky's name was added to the Russian interior ministry's "wanted" list, which is an online database of suspected criminals that the government is looking for.

As per TASS reports, the Ukrainian president is wanted by Moscow "under an article of the criminal code", however, there is no further details given.

Ukraine's foreign ministry, in a befitting reply, said that Russian President Vladimir Putin himself was subject to arrest under an International Criminal Court warrant.

"We would like to remind you that, unlike the worthless Russian announcements, an International Criminal Court warrant for the arrest of Russian dictator Vladimir Putin on suspicion of war crimes is quite real and subject to implementation in 123 countries," the foreign ministry said in a statement.

It further said that the announcement made by Moscow was "evidence of the desperation of the Russian state machine and propaganda, which can think of no other way to attract attention".

A Hamas official on Sunday (May 5) said that the Palestinian Islamist Group's negotiators in Cairo left for Doha after the talks, aimed at brokering a truce deal in Gaza, ended in the Egyptian capital, as per news agency AFP reports.

"The meeting with the Egyptian intelligence minister has ended and the Hamas delegation is leaving for Doha for further consultations," said the official to the negotiations on the condition of anonymity as he was not authorised to publicly discuss the talks.

Hamas, in a separate statement, insisted that it maintained a "positive and responsible approach" towards the negotiations and said it was determined to reach an agreement.

The statement highlighted that the key demands of the group included "a complete end" to the ongoing war, withdrawal of Israeli troops "from the entire Gaza Strip, the facilitation of the return of displaced people, the intensification of relief efforts, the start of reconstruction and the conclusion of a prisoner exchange deal".

<h2>Hamas negotiators to return to Cairo on Tuesday</h2>
