Russia and Ukraine have agreed in a Qatari-brokered deal to exchange almost 50 children displaced by Moscow's invasion, the Kremlin's children's rights commissioner Maria Lvova-Belova announced in Doha Wednesday.

Moscow has been accused of forcibly taking Ukrainian children into Russian territory during its full-scale offensive, with Lvova-Belova wanted by the International Criminal Court (ICC) on charges related to those allegations.

"For the first time in a face-to-face format, we held talks with the Ukrainian side. Twenty-nine children are due to go to Ukraine and 19 to Russia," Lvova-Belova announced.

She gave no details on why the children were in Russian hands or where they had come from.&nbsp;

Ukraine believes Russia has illegally taken more than 19,000 of its children since the start of the 2022 invasion, of which fewer than 400 have been returned.

Moscow denies that charge, saying that it has transferred children for their safety away from fighting zones.&nbsp;

The fate of the children has been highly sensitive in Ukraine since the war began two years ago.

Some of the children's parents were killed, while others were separated from carers by the fast-moving front lines at the start of the invasion.&nbsp;

Some were living in Ukrainian orphanages in areas Russia then occupied.&nbsp;

Ukraine says Moscow's forces illegally deported them to Russia, and accuses the Russian authorities of trying to wipe out their Ukrainian identity.

Teenagers that returned to Ukraine have said they were subjected to Russian patriotic education and made to praise the Russian army.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday (April 19) took a swipe at Samajwadi Party (SP) president Akhilesh Yadav and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi stating that the shooting of the film "do shehzade ki jodi" (The Duo of Two Princes) is on but the citizens of the country have already rejected it.

"Every time these people seek votes from the people of Uttar Pradesh, they carry a basket of dynasty, corruption and appeasement. They do not leave any chance to attack our faith," Modi said, addressing a rally here.

Taking a dig at Gandhi and Yadav, he said, "The shooting of the film 'do shehzade ki jodi (a pair of princes)' is going on. But their film has already been rejected by people."

He then launched a scathing attack on the grand old party stating that the Congress candidate from Amroha, Danish Ali, has objections in saying "Bharat Mata ki jai".

"Will a person, who cannot accept Bharat Mata ki jai, look good in the Indian Parliament? Should such a person be allowed entry into the Indian Parliament?" he asked the gathering.

He then slammed the opposition and said, "The SP and the Congress declined the invitation for the Ram temple's consecration ceremony in Ayodhya. People hankering for vote banks refused the invitation for the ceremony. Instead, look at those who fought the Babri Masjid case in the Supreme Court but still participated in the consecration ceremony after losing the case."

Iqbal Ansari, a claimant in the Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid case, attended the Ram temple consecration ceremony on Jan 22.

In a major setback to the BJP, the party's Moradabad candidate, Kunwar Sarvesh Kumar Singh passed away on Saturday (Apr 20) after eight Lok Sabha seats in western Uttar Pradesh went into polling on Friday (Apr 19).

Ritesh Gupta, the sitting BJP MLA from Moradabad said that Sarvesh suffered a heart attack after which he was rushed to Delhi's All India Institute of Medical Sciences, but couldn't be revived. He was 72.

UP BJP chief Bhupendra Chaudhary said that Sarvesh had experienced some issue in his throat&nbsp;and had to undergo an operation.

"He had some problem with his throat and had an operation. Yesterday, he had gone to AIIMS for a check-up," he said.

Sarvesh was one of the 12 candidates who&nbsp;were in the&nbsp;poll fray from Moradabad constituency during the first phase of Lok Sabha elections that took place on Apr 19.

President Volodymyr Zelensky on Sunday (Apr 21) said that the approval of over $61 billion in military aid for Ukraine by the US House of Representatives is a testament to the fact that his country will not become "a second Afghanistan."

US House on Saturday (Apr 20) voted 311-112 in favour of giving Ukraine a $60.8bn military aid package&nbsp;at a time when Kyiv has been fighting against Russia's invasion over the past two years and is now facing a critical shortage of ammunition to continue its defences.

"This aid will strengthen Ukraine and send the Kremlin a powerful signal that it will not be the second Afghanistan," Zelensky said in an interview with NBC's "Meet the Press".

"The United States will stay with Ukraine, will protect Ukrainians, and... they'll protect democracy in the world," he added.

The Ukrainian leader further expressed concern that some of his own forces are also "exhausted."

"We need to replace them. But these new brigades, they have to have the equipment," he told Meet the Press.&nbsp;

Soon after the announcement, Zelensky, in a video on his social media handle, expressed gratitude stating that the US assistance would help save lives and "bring a just end" to the war with Russia.&nbsp;

"I am grateful to the United States House of Representatives, both parties and personally Speaker Mike Johnson for the decision that keeps history on the right track," he wrote in a post on X.

Following the recent killing of Neha&nbsp;Hiremath in the south Indian state of Karnataka, the accused's father on Saturday (Apr 20) demanded maximum punishment for his son Fayaz Khondunaik and apologised to the victim's family.&nbsp;

Neha, daughter of Congress Councillor from Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation, was killed on campus by Fayaz, who used to be her classmate, earlier this month in broad day light.&nbsp;

As the southwest Indian state of Karnataka is set to go to polls in the second and third phase of Lok Sabha elections on April 26 and May 7, the&nbsp;killing of the Congress corporator's daughter has become a major flashpoint between the ruling Congress party and the opposition BJP in the state.&nbsp;

Neha was a first-year Master of Computer Applications (MCA) student at KLE Technological University in Hubballi.

Fayaz's father, Baba Saheb Subani, a school teacher by profession said he was informed about the incident on Thursday evening and was left aghast by his 23-year-old son's act.

"He (Fayaz) should be punished in a way that no one dares to do such a thing in future. With folded hands, I apologise to Neha's family members. She was like my daughter," he told reporters.

Subani further said that he had separated from his wife almost six years ago and since then Fayaz has been living with his mother.&nbsp;

He said that he spoke to his son about three months ago and that Fayaz only called him when he needed money.

Subani then recalled that eight months ago, Neha's family spoke to him and alleged that his son was troubling their daughter.

Admitting that his son made a mistake, he said Fayaz and Neha were in a relationship and loved each other.

"Fayaz told me he wanted to marry her but I refused it with folded hands," he added.

He then condemned his son's act and demanded strict punishment for Fayaz, stating that no one should ever dare to commit such atrocities against women.&nbsp;

"I request the people of Karnataka to forgive me. My son has done wrong. He will be punished by the law of the land and I welcome it. My town has got a black mark because of my son. People of Munavalli (Fayaz's hometown) please forgive me. You raised us. Please forgive me," he pleaded with folded hands.

Earlier, Fayaz's mother Mamtaz, who is also a teacher by profession, demanded capital punishment for her son.

“I apologise to the people of Karnataka as well as Neha’s family for what my son has done. It is a great injustice to Neha and her family," she said.

“What my son has done is completely wrong and we hang our heads in shame. What he did is a big mistake and he should be given strict punishment as per the law of the land,” she added.

As the southwest Indian state of Karnataka is set to go to polls in the second and third phase of Lok Sabha elections on April 26 and May 7, the killing of the Congress corporator's daughter has become a major flashpoint between the ruling Congress party and the opposition BJP in the state. Neha was a first-year Master of Computer Applications (MCA) student at KLE Technological University in Hubballi. Fayaz's father, Baba Saheb Subani, a school teacher by profession said he was informed about the incident on Thursday evening and was left aghast by his 23-year-old son's act. "He (Fayaz) should be punished in a way that no one dares to do such a thing in future. With folded hands, I apologise to Neha's family members. She was like my daughter," he told reporters. Subani further said that he had separated from his wife almost six years ago and since then Fayaz has been living with his mother. He said that he spoke to his son about three months ago and that Fayaz only called him when he needed money. Subani then recalled that eight months ago, Neha's family spoke to him and alleged that his son was troubling their daughter. Admitting that his son made a mistake, he said Fayaz and Neha were in a relationship and loved each other. "Fayaz told me he wanted to marry her but I refused it with folded hands," he added. He then condemned his son's act and demanded strict punishment for Fayaz, stating that no one should ever dare to commit such atrocities against women. "I request the people of Karnataka to forgive me. My son has done wrong. He will be punished by the law of the land and I welcome it. My town has got a black mark because of my son. People of Munavalli (Fayaz's hometown) please forgive me. You raised us. Please forgive me," he pleaded with folded hands. Earlier, Fayaz's mother Mamtaz, who is also a teacher by profession, demanded capital punishment for her son. “I apologise to the people of Karnataka as well as Neha’s family for what my son has done. It is a great injustice to Neha and her family," she said. “What my son has done is completely wrong and we hang our heads in shame. What he did is a big mistake and he should be given strict punishment as per the law of the land,” she added. Following the development, the Kremlin released a statement threatening that the approval of the bill would eventually lead to even more deaths of Ukrainians.

"The decision to provide aid to Ukraine was expected and predictable," said Russia's presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov, as reported by state news agency TASS.

"It will further enrich the United States of America and ruin Ukraine even more, by killing even more Ukrainians because of the Kyiv regime," he added.

On the other hand Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed gratitude stating that the US assistance would help save lives and "bring a just end" to the war with Russia.

"I am grateful to the United States House of Representatives, both parties, and personally Speaker Mike Johnson for the decision that keeps history on the right track," he wrote on X.

US aid for Ukraine 'will kill even more Ukrainians', warns Kremlin

Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi on Saturday (Apr 20) launched a scathing attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi stating that BJP leaders wish to bring changes to the Constitution which was "written in letters of the blood of our freedom fighters".

While addressing a rally in Thrissur, Kerala, Priyanka alleged that for "PM Modi's men", the Constitution was an instrument to satisfy their political ambition and greed.

"In this so-called New India, the Prime Minister's men are going around and speaking haughtily about bringing changes to our Constitution, which was written in letters of the blood of our freedom fighters. They treat the Constitution, which upholds our right to liberty, equality, and brotherhood, as an instrument to fulfil their own greed and ambition. To them, it is nothing but pages that mean nothing," Priyanka claimed.

She further said that under the NDA rule, the foundation of the country stands on the threshold of destruction.
