<p>Last week, China released a statement saying that natural disasters had claimed the lives of at least 147 people, with several missing in the month of July after record rainfall hit the country's capital.</p>

<p>China's Ministry of Emergency Management said that 142 of the deaths or disappearances recorded in the month of July were caused by flooding or geological disasters. &nbsp;</p>

<p>The remaining five deaths or disappearances were due to other natural disasters such as drought.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Notably, China also recorded its highest temperature of more than 52 degree&nbsp;Celsius just last month, with millions being affected by extreme weather events across the country.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“China has suffered unprecedented extreme heatwaves since last year...This year, there are record-breaking high temperatures in Northern China,” Ma Jun, director of the Beijing-based NGO the Institute of Public and Environmental Affairs told AFP.&nbsp;</p>

<p>He added, “These heatwaves are linked to global warming, and this is what most climate scientists around the world tend to agree.”</p>

<p>In a report, the IWC's scientific committee underlined an 83% decline in the vaquita's population between the years 2015 and 2018 to only nine or 10 of the marine animals in total.</p>

<p>"The extinction of the vaquita is inevitable unless 100% of gillnets are substituted immediately with alternative fishing gears that protect the vaquita and the livelihoods of fishers," it said.</p>

<p>In the month of May, the United States interior secretary declared that Mexico failed in making efforts to put an end to the illegal wildlife trade threatening the vaquita, but a trade ban was ruled out by the US government in the month of July.</p>

<p>Five police officers, on Tuesday, were arrested over the death of a 27-year-old man in the southern French city of Marseille during nationwide riots that took place in early July, said the prosecutors.</p>

<p>Last month, France was jolted by fierce rioting over the killing of a 17-year-old in the Paris suburb of Nanterre, who was shot dead by a policeman for fleeing a traffic check and failing to comply with an order to stop his car.</p>

<p>The riots in the country witnessed a violent response from the police as hundreds of people were arrested and several police officers suffered wounds.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The prosecutors further added that several civilians and police are also giving evidence as witnesses.</p>

<p>The 27-year-old who lost his life was identified as Bendriss, who was married and a father of one. His widow is now expecting a second child. As per reports, Bendriss died after feeling unwell while riding a scooter.</p>

<p>The officer, in the court, admitted to firing a blast ball round, which reversed an earlier denial, however, he claimed that he did not witness anybody sustaining injuries. His lawyer added that there was no proof it was his round that had wounded Hedi.</p>

<p>The powerful police union, Alliance, said the ruling was "incomprehensible and very unfair".</p>

<p>In a bizarre incident, a man after being fired from his job, got furious and locked up nine of his former colleagues in the office in Singapore.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Last year, in the month of September, 52-year-old Vict Lim Siong Hock padlocked the main door of his ex-workplace, confining people inside for about an hour, as per Channel News Asia (CNA) reports.</p>

<p>On Monday (Aug 7), he was fined $2,976 by a court after he pleaded guilty to one count of wrongful confinement, with another charge of sending an abusive message to his former colleague, the outlet added.</p>

<p>Lim accepted the position of a driver and logistics assistant at an electronics company situated in Pantech Business Hub in late May 2022 and began working on 1 July 2022.&nbsp;</p>

<p>He used to work between 8 am and 4.30 pm or 5 pm and was allotted an hour for the lunch break. However, he was terminated on Aug 30, 2022, prior to the completion of his probation period, CNA reported citing court records.</p>

<p>After he was fired, Lim purchased a padlock from a hardware shop and decided to lock the main door, which was the only entrance to the office. He planned on doing so as he was resentful about being laid off. &nbsp;</p>

<p>He went to the office on 1 September&nbsp;2022 and secured the entrance with the padlock around 2:20 pm. On being questioned, Lim said that he assumed his ex-colleagues were on their lunch breaks and that "probably all of them" had left the office.</p>

<p>However, the prosecutor said that such lunch breaks were staggered so that there was at least one employee looking after the office premises at all times.</p>

<p>After Lim had locked the door, after about 10 minutes an employee, who wanted to use the restroom, to his surprise realized that the door was locked from the outside. He then informed his fellow colleagues and the nine of them got trapped inside.</p>

<p>They then asked for help from another colleague who worked in a different part of the building. On inspecting, the latter confirmed that the door had been padlocked.</p>

<p>To safely get the trapped employees out of confinement, the owner of the organisation hired a locksmith, who charged around $60 to remove the padlock later that day. He then filed a complaint against Lim whose actions were recorded on CCTV camera.</p>

<p>For the wrongful act of confining, he could have been imprisoned for up to three years, faced a penalty or both.</p>

<p>As per interior ministry data, which was last updated on Monday, Italy, so far this year, has witnessed around 93,700 migrant arrivals by sea, as compared to 44,700 which was recorded in the same period in the year 2022.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“Never throw anything onto a stage or at an artist while they are performing,” The Guardian quoted him as saying. “Phones, soft toys, food, drinks, flowers, and clothing are some of the most common items thrown by fans on stage, but when thrown in proximity and at a fair speed they can cause injury and also be a major safety hazard on stage.”</p>

<p>Footage that emerged from the incident involving Cardi B showed the rapper taking the matter in her own hands after a fan threw liquid over the pop star.</p>

<p>She was accused of battery after she allegedly threw her microphone at a woman in the audience when the fan appeared to throw a cup containing liquid at her.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"After a thorough review of this case and with the consultation from the Clark County District Attorney’s Office, this case has been closed as having insufficient evidence," a spokesperson for the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department told Fox News Digital on Wednesday. "No charges will be filed in relation to this case."&nbsp;</p>

<p>The growing number of such cases has forced the singers to speak up. Recently, Adele called out the behaviour during her show at her Las Vegas residency.</p>

<p>"Have you noticed how people are like, forgetting fucking show etiquette at the moment? People just throwing shit on stage, have you seen them," Adele said. "I f**king dare you. Dare you to throw something at me and I’ll f**king kill you."</p>

<p>Charlie Puth had also requested his fans to halt the “disrespectful and very dangerous behaviour”, while Tyler the Creator urged his fans to “stop throwing your sh*t on stage”, and Kelly Clarkson jokingly told an audience they could only hurl diamonds at her.</p>

<p>Dr Lucy Bennett, a lecturer at Cardiff University, who studies the relationship between fans and musicians, in a conversation with BBC said, “I think something is changing more recently and we’re seeing more isolated, disruptive, individual physical acts such as throwing items.”</p>

<p>She further added that COVID-19 could also be a reason behind the change in people's behaviour as they couldn’t be physically present at concerts during the pandemic.</p>

<p>Recently, Myah Elliott on TikTok said: “We need to normalise calling out toxic fan behaviour when people at concerts are doing things they’re not supposed to be doing that affects other people’s experiences. Do not be afraid to shame them,” she said.</p>

<p>While stressing on&nbsp;the importance of venue safety protocols, Allison said, “Venue rules of conduct exist for a reason – they are there to ensure that event attendees stay safe and can enjoy their time without any problems.”</p>

<p>Researchers are now turning to the poop of these primates in order to gain a better understanding of how they choose their mates and to gain insights into their mating lives.</p>

<p>In a paper published on August 2 in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B, the scientists combined genetic analysis with long-term behavioural observations so as to understand the reproductive patterns of the endangered species.</p>

<p>Unlike most primates, Muriquis, live in peaceful, egalitarian societies centred on related males and their mothers.</p>

<p>Karen Strier, a co-author of the paper and a professor of anthropology at UW-Madison, who has been studying the behaviour and ecology of these monkeys in a small, preserved section of the Brazilian forest for the past 40 years, said that she and her team can now identify each of the monkeys and also whose poop is whose.</p>

<p>She and her colleagues collected the samples and handed them over to &nbsp;Anthony Di Fiore, an anthropology professor and director of the Primate Molecular Ecology and Evolution Lab at UT Austin, and Paulo Chaves, Di Fiore's graduate student at the time. They further used these samples to study the DNA in order to understand the mating behaviour of muriquis.</p>

<p>The research team was able to ask unique genetic questions because Strier's field crew knew which samples belonged to whom.</p>

<p>“I knew from behavioural observations that there was a lack of competition in mating and that mothers didn't mate with their sons or close male relatives. But the only way to know who the fathers are is with genetics,” Strier said.</p>

<h2><strong>Females tend to mate and reproduce with males who have diverse set of genes coding</strong></h2>

<p>Chaves and Di Fiore, following their lab analysis confirmed that there were no mother-son pairings, which further suggested that the muriquis may recognize their family members, which helps them to avoid incestuous mating.</p>

<p>Their analysis also discovered that the female muriquis prefer to mate with males who have a more diverse set of genes coding for molecules that play an important role in the body’s immune response to pathogens and other environmental stressors.</p>

<p>This interesting class of genes is known as the major histocompatibility complex (MHC), and Chaves and Di Fiore were able to characterize genetic variation between individual monkeys.</p>

<p>“Our finding that male sires have higher MHC diversity than expected by chance is one of the things we would expect if that diversity contributes to male fitness or is one of the dimensions of female mate choice," Di Fiore said.</p>

<p>"Our study is one of just a handful that has looked at the relationship between MHC variation and reproductive patterns in wild primates and is the only one to do so for an egalitarian species like muriquis,” she added.</p>

<p>On Sunday, ECOWAS&nbsp;gave the junta, that toppled the democratically elected government of President Mohamed Bazoum in a military coup, a week to either restore him or face the potential use of force.</p>

<p>ECOWAS military chiefs were meeting in Nigeria's capital Abuja to discuss ways to respond to the crisis.</p>

<p>"All the elements that will go into any eventual intervention have been worked out, including the resources needed, and including the how and when we are going deploy the force," said ECOWAS commissioner Abdel-Fatau Musah.</p>

<p>"Any military intervention against Niger would be tantamount to a declaration of war against Burkina Faso and Mali," the two countries warned in a joint statement. It comes after West African leaders threatened to use "force" in order to reinstate Bazoum. The leaders have also spoken of possible sanctions on the putschists.</p>

<p>Mali and Burkina Faso said the "disastrous consequences of a military intervention in Niger... could destabilise the entire region".</p>

<p>The two refused to apply the "illegal, illegitimate and inhumane sanctions against the people and authorities of Niger".</p>

<p>The officials in the Hebei Province, which borders Beijing, had unfurled flood gates in seven low-lying flood control zones so as to contain the rivers from flooding the Chinese capital and the region’s other metropolis, Tianjin, as per the state media.</p>

<p>The Communist Party leader of Hebei, Ni Yuefeng, said he ordered the “activation of flood storage and diversion areas in an orderly manner, so as to reduce the pressure on Beijing’s flood control and resolutely build a ‘moat’ for the capital,” according to the New York Times reports.</p>

<p>This move by the government further flooded the neighbouring city of Zhuozhou in Hebei, which had been making extensive efforts to fight its own intense flood situation after a levee broke and a local river overflowed.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Natural disasters kill 147 in China</strong></h2>

<p>On Friday (August 4), China released a statement saying that natural disasters had claimed the lives of at least 147 people, with several missing in the month of July after record rainfall hit the country's capital.</p>

<p>China's Ministry of Emergency Management said that 142 of the deaths or disappearances recorded in the month of July were caused by flooding or geological disasters. &nbsp;</p>

<p>The remaining five deaths or disappearances were due to other natural disasters such as drought.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Extreme rainfall&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>According to reports, since Saturday, the amount of rainfall that has been pouring has breached many local meteorological records.</p>

<p>A precipitation reading of 744.8mm (29.3 inches) was recorded by a reservoir in Beijing's Changping district between Saturday and Wednesday, which is the most to be logged in the city in over 140 years.</p>

<p>The previous record of 609mm was set in the year 1891.</p>

<p>In Hebei, 1,003mm of rain was recorded by a local weather station for a three-day period, i.e. from Saturday to Monday. Such an amount is usually witnessed over a year and a half.</p>
