Detroit-headquartered General Motors will recall 140,000 Chevy Bolt Electric Vehicles throughout the United States and Canada, the company said on Wednesday. The recall reportedly addresses a potential risk of fire in the carpet sported within the Electric Vehicle after an accident.

The recall affects 120,000 Chevy Bolt EVs in the US and 20,000 in Canada and pertains to model year vehicles between 2017 and 2023. GM has not shared how many incidents of the Bolt’s floor carpets catching fire have been reported, only declaring "rare instances" of the occurrence.

Chevrolet Bolt made its debut in 2016 as the only Electric Vehicle offering from General Motors. The EV offering has been furthered by the Bolt EUV as well as GMC Hummer EV and Cadillac Lyriq. The Bolt continues to grow in sales as one of the most affordable EVs in the US and Canadian markets.

Earlier, a previous recall of the Chevrolet Bolt EV and EUV due to battery fires decreased General Motors' delivery numbers in 2021. After sorting out the battery fire issues, the Bolt resumed production in April this year.

General Motors had geared up for a lucrative EV offering to the market with the 2023 model year versions of the Bolt EV seeing a $6,000 price cut.

Chinese citizens in Balochistan's Gwadar port, one of the most significant culmination points for China's Belt and Road Initiative, have been warned by the politically significant 'Haq Do Tehreeq' outfit (Gwadar Rights Movement) to leave by Thursday. The ultimatum has turned up the pressure on Islamabad, which has faced Beijing's ire in past when it was seen to be failing to protect Chinese assets in both legally and illegally administered Pakistani territories. There are fewer than 500 Chinese in Gwadar, all of them based in the Gwadar Port compound. It remains unclear what would happen if the Chinese citizens did not comply and leave.

The 'Haq Do Tehreek' (Gwadar Rights Movement) has been staging a sit-in protest outside the main entrance to the Gwadar Port for over 50 days. Led by Maulana Hidayat ur Rehman, the protestors have blocked the Gwadar East Bay Expressway, the key link connecting the port with Pakistan’s main highway network.

The expressway, airport and port in Pakistan-administered territories are part of the $50 billion Pakistan component of the Belt and Road called the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). Gwadar has been touted as the 'heart of CPEC' in Pakistan.

What are the protesters demanding?

The protesters are demanding a reduction in security checkpoints in the area, an end to deep-sea fish trawling citing it to have been harming the fisheries in the area, and an easing of restrictions on informal border trading with Iran.

What does this ultimatum mean?

The protest against the Chinese presence in Gwadar and the consequent violation of local rights received support from the opposition last year. However, reports in Pakistani media suggest that the Maulana capitalised on the popularity of that protest to contest a local government election from his 'Haq Do Tehreek' outfit and won a decisive victory in the first round of polls. This earned him the ire of other political parties who now see him as a rival. These political parties have refused to lend their support to the Maulana. This has resulted in smaller numbers of politically-aligned protesters, which Islamabad is seeing as a dilution of the protesters' ire.

The Maulana, however, is determined to continue with his protest.

This month, the movement has consistently upped the pressure on Islamabad to consider their demands.

On December 10, thousands of women rallied in Gwadar to show solidarity with Rehman. On December 16, Rehman and his supporters also flaunted weapons, indicating they could be used against those who they deem fit for the perceived violation of their movement rights.

WION sweeps The Future of News Awards 2022

Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky became an ever-present figure on television screens worldwide as he addressed the US Congress on December 22, unfurling the Ukrainian battle flag in the end and evoking the analogy of the ongoing war in Ukraine with second world war’s ‘Christmas of 1944’. In a speech that lasted about 25 minutes, Zelensky’s passionate pleas for the US and larger global support for Ukraine during the ongoing war were often mixed with doses of humour. “Ukraine is alive and kicking,” Zelensky told the US Congress, receiving thunderous applause in return.

Just like the "brave American soldiers which held their lines" and fought against Hitler's Nazi Germany in 1944, Ukrainian soldiers "are doing the same to Putin's forces this Christmas," Zelensky said to applause.

Sporting his signature olive green outfit with Ukrainian military insignia, Zelensky received triumphant cheers with bereft whistles typically reserved for a celebrity in a concert. But far from the frontline of war, in the power corridor of Washington's Capitol Hill, Zelensky appealed to the lawmakers and American citizens to continue supporting Ukraine during the ongoing war in his country.

"Your money is not charity, it's an investment in the global security and democracy that we handle in the most responsible way," Zelensky said in his address to a joint session of the US Congress.

“Against all odds and doom and gloom scenarios, Ukraine didn’t fall. Ukraine is alive and kicking,” Zelensky said.

Make Russia feel ruinous with sanctions: Zelensky to the US Congress

In his address, Zelensky said that US President Joe Biden supported his 10-point peace plan.

"We need peace. Yes. Ukraine has already offered proposals, which I just discussed with President Biden, our peace formula. The10 points which should and must be implemented for our joint security. I am glad to share that President Biden supported our peace initiative today. Each of you, ladies and gentlemen, can assist in the implementation to ensure that Americans' leadership remains solid, bicameral, and bipartisan," Zelensky said.

"You can strengthen sanctions to make Russia feel how ruinous its aggression truly is. It is in your power, really, to help us bring to justice everyone who started this unprovoked and criminal war. Let's do it," said Zelensky, adding that only justice against the Russian aggression will compensate for all losses done by the war.

Russians must defeat The Kremlin in their mind: Volodymyr Zelensky

In a comment whose resonance was reflected in strong returning applause from the American Congressmen sitting in the reception of the Ukrainian president, Zelensky said that while Ukraine will continue its effort to "defeat the Kremlin on battlefield", the Russians will stand free "if they defeat the Kremlin in their mind".

We must stop it: Zelensky on operational Iranian drones in Ukraine

Hitting out at Iran's covert support to Russia on the battlefield, Zelensky said that Iranian drones are a threat to Ukraine's critical infrastructure and that they must be stopped with an immediate sense of urgency.

Only a small, select group of lawmakers have seen the returns, which have been subject to privacy laws that made it a felony for anyone to leak details.

The law also allows legislators with responsibility over taxation to examine the returns of any American taxpayer.

What Trump's tax returns may contain?

Trump's finances have generated interest reportedly due to the lengths to which he has gone to keep them private.

But a lot of information about Trump's tax returns is already in the public domain. A New York Times report in 2020 claimed that Trump paid little or no federal income tax for years before he came to power. The report said that Trump paid no federal income taxes in 11 of the 18 years that were examined and reduced his tax bill with questionable measures. Trump denied the report in 2020, calling it "fake news".

The returns released by the US Congress, however, could show how much he has given to charity if he has foreign business concerns or other conflicts of interest, and how his businesses were affected by his presidency and the pandemic.

What are the Republicans saying?

The Ways and Means Committee Republicans had warned ahead of Tuesday's vote that releasing the returns could set a precedent eroding privacy for Americans and enabling unwarranted investigations of political opponents.

"Democrats will open the door for partisans in Congress to have nearly unlimited power to target political enemies by obtaining and making public their private tax returns," the panel's top Republican Kevin Brady said in a statement.

Donald Trump's six years' worth of tax returns will be made public after a vote by lawmakers at the US House of Representatives effectively concluded a years-long battle by the former US president to keep his tax filings private. The Democratic-led House Wars and Means Committee voted 24-16 to release six years of Trump's tax filings for the duration covering the period between 2015 to 2020. The vote also marks one of the last actions of the Democratic-led House Ways and Means Committee, whose reins will be handed over to the Republicans two weeks later in January. Democratic congressman Lloyd Doggett reportedly told CNN a summary report would be sent to the full House of Representatives with analysis from the US Congress Joint Committee on Taxation, along with the raw returns. China's accessibility to Yangtse plateau has improved: ASPI analysis

The analysis by the Canberra-based think tank stated that China's rapid development of infrastructure along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) means that the Chinese "can now access key locations on the Yangtse Plateau more easily than it could have just one year ago".

In the Yangtse plateau, India maintains a commanding position on the plateau's high ground. "China has compensated for this disadvantage by building new military and transport infrastructure that allows it to get troops quickly into the area," the ASPI report said.

India-China LAC standoff: Increased risk of escalation, conflict

The ASPI report, while referring to India's Line of Actual Control with China, said that it continues to become "more crowded", as infrastructure is built and large numbers of Indian and Chinese outposts compete for strategic, operational and tactical advantage.

"This increases the risk of escalation and potential military conflict stemming from incidental or deliberate encounters between Indian and Chinese troops," it said.

Tawang's significance

Between October 1950 and May 1951, China occupied the Buddhist state of Tibet by military means, forcing the state's spiritual figurehead Dalai Lama to seek refuge in India.

Years later, China made no secret of its desire to seek control of the Tawang sector, due to its historic monasteries that hold remarkable significance for the Tibetan people.

The December 9 skirmish is only the latest among decades of many localised India-China clashes that have been reported from Arunachal Pradesh. The confrontation was the most serious one between Indian and Chinese troops since Galwan in 2020.
