Lack of sleep in men linked with reduced effect of vaccine shot: Study

China said that Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States are treading a "path of error and danger" after they unveiled a nuclear-powered submarines deal on Monday. Meanwhile, Russia said that the AUKUS submarine pact will bring 'years of confrontation' in Asia.

"The latest joint statement from the United States, United Kingdom and Australia demonstrates that the three countries, for the sake of their own geopolitical interests, completely disregard the concerns of the international communities and are walking further and further down the path of error and danger," China's foreign ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said on Tuesday.

The spokesperson accused the three Western allies of inciting an arms race, saying the security deal was "a typical case of Cold War mentality".

The sale of submarines "constitutes a severe nuclear proliferation risk, and violates the aims and objectives of the Non-Proliferation Treaty", Wang said at a regular news conference in Beijing.

The announcement for nuclear submarine deal was made at an event at a naval base in San Diego, California, where the US President Joe Biden hosted Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.

The submarines are expected to be equipped with long-range cruise missiles, offering a potent deterrent.

The Australian Prime Minister said that the wider economic impact at home would be similar to the introduction of the automobile industry in the country after World War II.

Albanese underlined that Australia was now only the second country, after Britain, to be granted access to US naval nuclear secrets.

Three conventionally armed, nuclear-powered Virginia class vessels will be sold "over the course of the 2030s", with the "possibility of going up to five if that is needed", said Biden's national security advisor, Jake Sullivan.

Britain and Australia will then embark on building a new model, also nuclear-powered and carrying conventional weapons, dubbed the SSN-AUKUS. This will be a British design, with US technology, and with "significant investments in all three industrial bases", Sullivan said.

China said that Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States are treading a "path of error and danger" after they unveiled a nuclear-powered submarines deal on Monday.

ALSO WATCH | Aukus aims to counter china's growth footprint in Indo-Pacific × With a US Virginia-class nuclear submarine in the background of three leaders, Biden said the United States had "safeguarded stability in the Indo-Pacific for decades" and that the submarine alliance would bolster "the prospect of peace for decades to come". Albanese said the deal represents the biggest single investment in Australia's defence capability "in all of our history". ALSO READ | UK PM Rishi Sunak labels China as 'systemic challenge' to world order The submarines are expected to be equipped with long-range cruise missiles, offering a potent deterrent. Silicon Valley Bank meltdown: What, why and how?

The Supreme Court of India on Tuesday (March 14) rejected a curative petition filed in 2010 by the Union government led by former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh demanding increased compensation to the victims of the 1984 Bhopal gas tragedy, referring to a nearly four decades old industrial disaster in central India that claimed at least 4,000 lives and resulted in non-fatal injuries to over half a million.

"We are unsatisfied with the Union of India for not furnishing any rationale for raking up this issue after two decades," a five-judge bench led by Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul said.

"Settlement can be set aside only on the ground of fraud. No ground of fraud has been pleaded by the Union of India," the judgment reasoned.

The industrial disaster took place in a plant operated by the US-based Union Carbide Corporation, now owned by Dow Chemicals.

After hearing detailed arguments, a five-judge bench headed by Supreme Court's Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul on January 12, had reserved its verdict.

Bhopal gas tragedy: How much compensation was sought?

The Union government of India had sought an additional compensation to the tune of nearly one billion dollars (or ₹7,844 crore).

Bhopal gas tragedy: Why was increased compensation sought?

The Indian government had said that given the sheer scale of the tragedy, the compensation of ₹715 crore ($470 million) in 1989 was "inadequate".

Considered a "chemical accident" and the "world's worst industrial disaster", the Bhopal gas tragedy occurred on the night of 2-3 December 1984 at the Union Carbide India Limited (UCIL) pesticide plant in Bhopal, about 850 km south of New Delhi. The official number of immediate deaths was 2,259. Later revisions to the toll suggested that about 8,000 people died within two weeks of the leak, while another 8,000 died from gas-related diseases in the immediate years after 1984.

UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak created a stir even amongst the most devout Conservative Party supporters by redesigning the country's immigration policy. The 'Stop the Boats Law' or Illegal Migration Law, which lays out a roadmap to end illegal entry to the United Kingdom as route to asylum, has brought Sunak's ancestral history of immigration into spotlight, and that of UK Home Secretary Suella Braverman as well as her predecessor Priti Patel.

While announcing the policy, Sunak wrote: "If you come to the UK illegally, you will be stopped from making late claims and attempts to frustrate your removal. You will be removed in weeks, either to your own country if it is safe to do so, or to a safe third country like Rwanda."

Home Secretary Suella Braverman, in her statement, said: "The British people rightly expect us to solve this crisis and that’s what myself and the Prime Minister fully intend to do. We must stop the boats. You will not be allowed to stay."

Previously, in Prime Minister Boris Johnson's cabinet, the then home secretary Priti Patel implemented a "pushback policy", which planned to force people in small boats back to France.

Later on, as the British moved the national capital from Calcutta (now Kolkata) to Delhi in 1911, the second wave of migration to East Africa began, which continued up until the beginning of the second world war, according to data maintained in the Imperial Indian Gazetteer.
The Sunaks, Bravermans as well as the Patels left British India for East Africa during this time.

Sunak, Braverman, Patel: The 'proud British' going after illegal immigration

Scientists this week announced advancement towards a superconductor material that could conduct electricity in everyday conditions. The breakthrough means a stunning transformation into any technology that uses electric energy. The breakthrough also means the opening of new possibilities for your phone, magnetically moving trains, and future fusion power plants.

A peer-reviewed accounting of the findings was published on Wednesday in the Nature journal.

The new superconductor consists of lutetium, a rare earth metal, and hydrogen with a little bit of nitrogen mixed in. It needs to be compressed to a pressure of 145,000 pounds per square inch before it gains its superconducting prowess. That is about 10 times the pressure that is exerted at the bottom of the ocean’s deepest trenches.

A team of physicists led by Ranga Dias, a physicist from the University of Rochester in New York, claims it might have cracked it. The team demonstrated a rare earth metal lutetium combined with hydrogen and nitrogen conducted electricity without resistance at 21 degrees Celsius (70 degrees Fahrenheit) and around just 10,000 atmospheres of pressure, which may sound unusably high amount, but the physicists point out that even higher pressures are currently used in engineering processes such as chip manufacturing.

Why is it important?

For decades, scientists have sought superconductors that work at room temperature, and their hunt appears to have achieved fruition.

If the breakthrough is confirmed in subsequent tests, it would help create devices that do not waste energy on heat when producing a current and could be used to create more efficient computers; superior X-ray technology; and even more powerful nuclear reactors.

Why is there skepticism around discovery?
