Why Napoleon Complex is a derogatory social stereotype?

Brought into pop culture by Mariah Carey-Eminem rap fight in 2009, Napoleon Complex is not even real. Here is why.

Napoleon Complex is characterised by aggressive social behaviour as an implication of a person's physical or social shortcomings.

It is named after Napoleon, the great French emperor who is known to have compensated for his lack of height by seeking power through conquest.

First, this is an unfair characterisation of Napoleon. The view was fostered by the British as part of propaganda to diminish their enemy's public imagery. There are conflicting accounts of Napoleon being 5 feet 2 inches tall or 5 feet 7 inches.

A 2007 study by the University of Central Lancashire concluded that short men are less likely to lose their temper than men of average height.

This is because when people see a short man being aggressive, they are likely to think it is due to his size, simply because it grabs their attention by virtue of a shorter man's unlikely association with an aggressive nature. This, by no means, shows that aggression is there to compensate for the shortcomings of physiological attributes.

7. Sparks: China’s Underground Historians and Their Battle for the Future

Ian Johnson's book is a fascinating story of dissidents living in China and their struggle to record Chinese history in real time amid Xi Jinping's rule.

6. Homelands: A Personal History of Europe

Journalist Timothy Garton Ash gives a panoramic view of European history in a sharp memoir.

The damning book by Anthony Seldon and Raymond Newell is a detailed account of Tory leader Boris Johnson's rise to power. With anecdotes from Johnson’s colleagues and confidants, the book is thoroughly revealing and absolutely unputdownable.

The book is topping the bestseller chart already in India. Journalist Neerja Chowdhury describes the decision-making at the top of Indian politics by authoring revealing chapters on Indian prime ministers - from Indira Gandhi to Vajpayee to Manmohan Singh

The book by Harry, the Duke of Sussex, topped the bestsellers' chart. The memoir, reportedly ghostwritten by JR Moehringer, has been narrated by Harry himself. The book has been described as striking and revealing.

2. The No-State Solution: A Jewish Manifesto

Author Daniel Boyarin's book is an evocative manifesto, arguing for a new understanding of an idea of the Jewish homeland.

Mikhail Shishkin's book argues that Russia is not a riddle or a mystery. The book focuses on President Vladimir Putin's rule and his decision to launch an offensive on Ukraine.

<p>The Israeli side would also allow the passage to some 300 trucks of aid into Gaza during the days of pause.</p>

When Sports Brought World Leaders Together

The exchange of table tennis between players of the United States and China in the early 1970s is deemed to have helped US to establish ties with People’s Republic of China. The 'ping-pong diplomacy' as it was called, paved the way for the US President Richard Nixon’s visit to Beijing in 1972, one of the most consequential geopolitical events of twentieth century.

The Pakistan cricket team was on India tour when its military ruler Zia ul Haq came to Jaipur to watch a Test match. His visit eased tensions between two foes as they withdrew thousands of troops from forward positions to avoid what appeared to be an impending war.

Dmitry Medvedev and Dr Manmohan Singh (2008)

India’s Viswanathan Anand became Chess world champion after defeating Russia’s Vladimir Kramnik in October 2008. Anand’s champion moment came right after India and the US signed landmark nuclear deal which raised a few eyebrows in Moscow. A year later, when Delhi and Moscow signed civil nuclear agreement, Anand’s win reportedly surfaced in the talks between Medvedev and Singh, rejuvenating a historic sense of people-to-people ties between India and Russia.

Narendra Modi and Anthony Albanese (2023)

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Australian counterpart celebrated 75 years of India-Australia ties during an inaugural Test match played in Ahmedabad in March 2023.

From Nixon and Mao to Modi and Albanese, sports has often glued diplomatic efforts for resumption, restoration or rejuvenation of bilateral ties.

<p>In Kolkata's historic Eden Gardens, as Australia played against South Africa in the second semifinal of ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023, the geopolitical playground of Ahmedabad for the quadrennial event's final had its permutations and combinations ready.</p>

<p>Despite spectators at Eden Gardens' firmly on South African side that day, it was a contest between India's fellow member of BRICS — Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa — and New Delhi's Quad partner Australia. The latter prevailed over South Africa. &nbsp;</p>

<p>As the South African side lived up to their 'choker' reputation, with yet another failure in a big game at the ICC World Cup, New Delhi dispatched a message of invitation to Canberra.&nbsp;</p>

<p>It was this exact stadium where India's Prime Minister Modi and Australian PM Anthony Albanese&nbsp;in March had marked '75 years of India-Australia friendship through cricket' as they handed caps showing with national emblems to rival captains Steve Smith and Rohit Sharma.</p>

<p>Launched in 2018, the 2+2 dialogue is a format of meeting of the foreign and defence ministers of India with the countries it shares close ties with, on strategic and security issues.</p>

<p>Besides Australia, India holds 2+2 dialogues with three other key strategic partners, namely, the United States, Japan, and Russia. With all these countries, India's strategic ties are significant. Apart from Russia, New Delhi's other 2+2 dialogue counterparts are also its partners&nbsp;in the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (QSD) or Quad.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Cricket, Quad and World Cup: How do they add up?</strong></h2>

<p>The Quad is a diplomatic partnership between Australia, India, Japan, and the United States aimed to supporting an open, stable and prosperous Indo-Pacific that is inclusive and resilient. The terms inclusive and resilient are often described as diplomatic euphemisms directed against <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/india-vietnam-malaysia-philippines-and-taiwan-reject-chinas-new-controversial-map-release-statements-631063">China's maritime belligerence in the Indo-Pacific</a>.</p>

<p>The dialogue is also paralleled by joint military exercises of an unprecedented scale, titled Exercise Malabar. The diplomatic and military arrangement is widely viewed as a response to increased Chinese economic and military power in the region, especially in South China Sea where Beijing has expanded its maritime claims in the recent years near the Japanese and Filipino waters.</p>

<p>In recent years, Australia and China have accused each other over human rights violations and have described national security threats from individuals linked with each other's capitals.</p>

<p>Add cricket into Quad, and a security equation with a complementary people-to-people element emerges as the top focus of an expansive bilateral equation.</p>

<p>In recent years, India has emerged as a key partner for Australia and Canberra seeks to diversify its strategic partnerships beyond its traditional reliance on China. The addition of a sporting warmth into the equation often reflects in the close-door talks between the leaders and their summation which is published in the joint statements.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In May 2023, when Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Australia, an official readout from PM Modi referred to his sixth visit to Australia as a sign of "the depth in our comprehensive relations, the convergence in our views and the maturity of our ties."&nbsp;</p>

<p>"If I may say in the language of cricket, our ties have entered the T-20 mode," Modi said while referring to the quickest format of the game, implying the way India-Australia ties appear to have surpassed "this depends on time" diplomatic catchphrase.&nbsp;</p>

The Beatles on Top: Enduring Legacy Across Generations

Over half-a-century after the band broke up, its new AI-powered song “Now and Then” has debuted to reach the top of Billboard’s digital sales ranking.

The devotion of the fans of the band bordered on being religious. Concertgoers often wet their seats or fainted. This was Beatlemania.

The reaction of band’s teenage fans to songs such as “Baby You Can Drive My Car” often showed a retaliation to sexual repressiveness.

The Beatles also revolutionised what it meant to be a young man. Their public imagery defied the mystique of masculinity unlike early rock and rollers such as Jerry Lee Lewis.

They were ‘More Popular Than Jesus’

When John Lennon told a journalist in 1966 that the Beatles were ‘more popular than Jesus’, it led to massive conservative backlash, and eventually to Lennon's assassination in 1980.

Nearly Half of the Beatles Listeners are 18 to 29-year-olds

Forbes reported in 2021 that 18-to-29-year-olds represent 47 per cent of the listeners of the Beatles’ billions of streamed songs. That’s how their fandom goes across generations.
