An Uyghur Muslim leader has slammed China for its treatment of minorities in Xinjiang province and has vowed to fight against Chinese atrocities. The leader said that every Uyghur around the world was a "freedom fighter" and that they "will not rest until we make our people free".

In a fiery speech during a protest to commemorate East Turkestan`s Independence Day, the leader said: "We will not rest until we make our people free. We will not back down... We have rights. We have very basic fundamental right to fight against you every day, every hour. so today I want to say every Uyghur in the world is the soldier every Uyghur around the world is a freedom fighter."&nbsp;

To commemorate Independence Day on November 12, protests were held against China in various cities around the world.

East Turkestan or Xinjiang region has about 10 million Uyghurs. The Turkic Muslim group makes up 45 per cent of the population. Uyghur Muslims have long accused China of cultural, religious and economic discrimination.

About 7 per cent of the Muslim population in Xinjiang, has been incarcerated in an expanding network of "political re-education" camps, according to US officials and UN experts. East Turkistan government in exile said that the Uyghur, Kazakh, Kyrgyz, Uzbek, Tatar and other peoples of East Turkistan have spent the last 71 years fighting to restore their independence.

For the last six years, millions of East Turkistan people, mostly of Muslim faith, have been held in concentration camps, prisons and slave labour camps. According to survivors` accounts, they are being tortured, killed for their organs, raped, sterilised and executed.

The government-in-exile is advocating for official recognition from the world`s governments and parliaments.Classified documents known as the China Cables, accessed last year by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists, threw light on how the Chinese government uses technology to control Uyghur Muslims worldwide.However, China regularly denies such mistreatment and says the camps provide vocational training.&nbsp;

People in the internment camps have described being subjected to forced political indoctrination, torture, beatings, and denial of food and medicine, and say they have been prohibited from practising their religion or speaking their language.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Sunday that Cyprus was made of "two separate states". His comments came during his visit to the breakaway Turkish held northern part of Cyprus island. The visit has already been decried as "provocation" by Cyprus. Erdogan's comments have further diminished hopes of reunification of the island into a single country.

Erdogan's visit to the Turkish-held statelet recognised only by Ankara comes amid heightened tensions on the island and in the Eastern Mediterranean and was condemned as a "provocation without precedent" by the Republic of Cyprus.&nbsp;

His trip marked the 37th anniversary of the self-proclaimed Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) where an estimated 30,000 Turkish troops are stationed. TRNC has recognition only from Turkey.

The Turkish president was later to attend a "picnic" in the disputed beachfront area of Varosha along the UN buffer zone that has divided the island since Turkey's invasion.

COVID-19: Sri Lanka to impose lockdown in Colombo, Gampaha

Union home minister Amit Shah on Sunday announced several measures, including doubling of RT-PCR tests and strengthening medical infrastructure to bring under control Delhi`s rising number of coronavirus cases.

The decisions were announced by Shah after he chaired a meeting to review the coronavirus situation in the national capital. Union health minister Harsh Vardhan, Delhi lieutenant governor Anil Baijal, chief minister Arvind Kejriwal and Delhi health minister Satyendar Jain had also participated in the meet at North Block today.Taking to Twitter, the home minister talked about the various measures to be implemented.

The Home Minister said that some MCD hospitals will be converted into dedicated Covid hospitals to treat patients with mild symptoms.

"Today many directions were given in the meeting. 1- RT-PCR tests will be doubled in Delhi. 2- In Delhi, mobile testing vans of the ICMR of health ministry will be deployed in places vulnerable to Covid-19 spread by using maximum capacity of labs," Shah tweeted.

Shah said that 10,000-bed COVID Centre at Chhatarpur will be strengthened further and the number of beds with oxygen facility will be increased.Dedicated teams will visit all private hospitals to check the availability of Covid-19 related medical infrastructure and to inspect the condition of patients, he said.

"Review of all containment measures like establishment of containment zones, contact tracts, quarantine and screening. Especially those people who are at high risk of contracting COVID and it should be reviewed continuously to ensure no lacuna in implementing containment measures," he tweeted.&nbsp;

Additional doctors and paramedical staff of CAPF will be deployed in the national capital and will soon be airlifted to Delhi.

"In today`s meeting Directions were given to focus on tracking Covid-19 patients who are in home isolation and shifting them to COVID hospitals if they need immediate medical facility so that more and more lives can be saved," he tweeted.&nbsp;

Shah said that direction has been given to prepare a protocol for plasma donation and transfusion to affected persons. For this, he said, a high-level committee headed by Dr VK Paul, AIIMS Director and DG ICMR will submit a report on it soon.

A doctor from a Covid-19 hospital in Romania is being hailed a hero after he tried to help Covid-19 patients to safety as fire broke out in Intensive Care Unit of the hospital. The doctor, identified by local media as Catalin Denciu himself suffered second and third degree burns to 40 per cent of his body. He has now been transferred to Belgium's Queen Astrid military hospital&nbsp;

The fire in the hospital claimed lives of ten&nbsp;Covid-19 patients and seriously injured six others.

"I express my respect for the heroic doctor who showed particular courage and spirit of sacrifice in trying to save the patients," Prime Minister Ludovic Orban told local media, in praise echoed by doctors' unions and local media.

The prosecutor general has opened an enquiry into the tragedy, while the health ministry has suggested the fire could have been caused by an electrical short circuit.

The blaze recalled Romania's previous deadliest fire, at Bucharest's Colectiv nightclub in October 2015, which left 64 people dead, and prompted angry questions over how it could have been allowed to happen.

A survivor of the Colectiv disaster, Alexandra Furnea, called on authorities "to do what they didn't do for us" and show that lessons had been learned over the past five years.

"Do not hide behind self-serving lies, don't mention outdated protocols in order to justify a crime," Furnea wrote in a Facebook post.

Local media reported that the preliminary inquiry showed that the fire safety plans for the second floor of the building, where the fire broke out, had not been updated for 30 years.

In another Facebook post, fellow Colectiv survivor Mihai Grecea called for the resignation of Health Minister Nelu Tataru.

Shock and sympathy

Local media have also revealed serious problems in the management of the hospital.

The facility has had eight directors over the past year, one of whom served for just three days in May.&nbsp; 
Romania's political class reacted with statements of shock and sympathy for the victims.

President Klaus Iohannis said he was "profoundly saddened" by the tragedy, which he said had "touched the whole country".

"I am at the side of all those who have been affected by this terrible accident," Iohannis said on his Facebook page.

The incident prompted the centre-left Social Democrats (PSD) and liberal USR-Plus parties to suspend campaigning for parliamentary elections early next month.

The tragedy hit as Romania struggles to cope with the impact of a second wave of the coronavirus pandemic.

According to Digi24 TV, the hospital is seeking temporary storage for the victims' bodies as the hospital morgue was already full before the fire.

Largely spared the worst during the first wave of the pandemic, Romania has seen mounting numbers of infections and hospitalisations in recent months.&nbsp;

On Saturday, it reported 129 new virus deaths, bringing the total death toll to 8,813.

The country of 19 million is one of the poorest in the European Union and its dilapidated and understaffed health system is ill-equipped to deal with a spike in hospital admissions.

Israeli military said on Sunday that it struck Hamas positions in the morning (local time) after a rocket attack from the Gaza strip. The attack, it said, took place during the night.

The army said that two rockets were fired into southern Israel from Gaza on Saturday. There are no immediate reports of casualties or damage.

The Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) tweeted they had "struck Hamas underground infrastructure &amp; military posts in Gaza".

"The IDF is conducting an ongoing situational assessment &amp; remains prepared to operate against any terror activity," they added.

"I'm warning the terror organisations in Gaza, even during the coronavirus crisis -- don't try us," he said in remarks relayed by his office.&nbsp;

"I never elaborate on our operational plans, but I'm telling you -- the price of continued aggression will be heavy, very heavy."

The strike from Gaza -- which has not been claimed -- comes days after the anniversary of the assassination of senior Islamic Jihad leader Baha Abu Al-Ata, killed in a strike on his home in Gaza City on November 12 last year.

Ethiopia's Tigray region has claimed responsibility for rocket strikes on airport in Eritrea, a country bordering Ethiopia. This has raised fears of a wider conflict in Africa that started with one between Ethiopia and its own Tigray region. AFP quoted diplomats on Saturday to say that multiple rockets had struck Eritrea's capital Asmara and landed near the airport.

The conflict between Ethiopia and Tigray region has already caused a humanitarian crisis that has seen more than 14,000 people fleeing their homes to neighbouring Sudan, a country that is not fully equipped to handle the population.

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed announced November 4 he had ordered military operations in Tigray in a dramatic escalation of a long-running feud with the region's ruling party, the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF).

"Ethiopian forces are also using the airport of Asmara," TPLF leader Debretsion Gebremichael told AFP Sunday, saying this made the airport a "legitimate target" for the strikes.

He added that his forces had also been fighting "16 divisions" of Eritrean forces in recent days "in several fronts".

The TPLF has previously accused Abiy's government of enlisting military support from Eritrea, something Ethiopia denies.&nbsp;

There was no immediate response from the Eritrean or Ethiopian governments on Sunday.

It was not clear how many rockets were fired on Saturday night, where in Tigray they were fired from, whether they hit their targets or what damage they inflicted.

The United States embassy in Asmara posted an advisory to its website Sunday about "a series of loud noises" at around 7:50 pm Saturday night.&nbsp;

"Unconfirmed reports indicate they may have been explosive devices believed to be in the vicinity of the Asmara International Airport. There are no indications the airport was struck," the advisory said.&nbsp;

The TPLF dominated Ethiopian politics for nearly three decades and fought a brutal 1998-2000 border war with Eritrea that left tens of thousands dead.&nbsp;

Abiy came to power in 2018 and won the Nobel Peace Prize the following year in large part for his effort to initiate a rapprochement with Eritrea.

Fleeing refugees

Hundreds of people are reported to have been killed so far in the conflict in Africa's second most populous country, some in a gruesome massacre documented last week by Amnesty International.&nbsp;

Over 20,000 Ethiopians have fled as refugees into Sudan, a figure that continues to rise, Sudanese officials say.

Among them are Ethiopians returning to camps where they and their families sought refuge from devastating famine decades ago.

To cross the river at the two countries' border, they climb into small boats crammed with other exhausted and terrified Ethiopians seeking safety.

"I am filled with immeasurable sadness, because when I left, 20 years ago, I never thought that I would come back as a miserable refugee," said Gabriel, a 40-year-old farmer who arrived in eastern Sudan this week, asking to be identified by his first name because he feared for his safety.

Back in Ethiopia, the UN is pushing for full humanitarian access to Tigray, where Debretsion says hundreds of thousands have been displaced internally by fighting that has featured multiple rounds of government air strikes.

Conflicting narratives

Ever since Abiy took power in 2018 on the back of anti-government protests, the TPLF has complained of being sidelined and scapegoated for Ethiopia's woes.

The feud grew more intense after Tigray went ahead with its own elections in September -- defying a nationwide ban on all polls imposed because of the coronavirus pandemic -- and tried to brand him an illegitimate ruler.

The immediate catalyst for the military operations in Tigray, Abiy has said, was a TPLF attack on federal military camps.

The TPLF has denied the attack ever occurred, though Abiy's office has seized on a recent interview with Tigrayan media in which a senior TPLF official, Sekuture Getachew, said "it was imperative to take a thunder-like strike".

"Had it not been for the mission maybe Abiy had a chance to command dictatorially for a short term," Sekuture said in the interview, adding that the TPLF now controlled most of the firepower of the Ethiopian military's Northern Command.

Other TPLF leaders have not commented on the interview.

Ethiopian lawmakers have backed a plan to install a caretaker administration in Tigray, and officials have issued arrest warrants for Debretsion and other TPLF leaders.&nbsp;

Abiy's government has said the TPLF needs to be disarmed before negotiations can begin, frustrating world leaders who are calling for an immediate cessation of hostilities.

Happy Diwali, wishes Donald Trump and other world leaders

Villagers in Kalbajar District outside of Nagorno-Karabakh region set their houses on fire on Saturday. The district is part of the territory previously controlled by Armenian Separatists which will now be handed over to Azerbaijan as a part of the peace agreement.&nbsp;

"This is my house, I can't leave it to the Turks," as Azerbaijanis are often called by Armenians, said one resident as he threw burning wooden planks and rags soaked in gasoline into a completely empty house. He was quoted by AFP.

"Everybody is going to burn down their house today... We were given until midnight to leave," he said.

"We also moved our parents' graves, the Azerbaijanis will take great pleasure in desecrating our graves. It's unbearable," he added.

Armenia and Azerbaijan entered into an armed conflict in late September. The fight lasted for six weeks.

Armenia on Saturday said that 2,317 of it fighters were killed in the clashes, an increase of nearly 1,000 deaths compared to the last confirmed death toll among Armenian fighters.

Azerbaijan has not revealed its military casualties and the real toll after weeks of fighting is expected to be much higher.

Armenian villagers burn their houses just ahead of Azerbaijan takeover

The war in Ethiopia has spiralled into a massive humanitarian crisis. Hundreds have been killed and many more have been displaced. Ethiopian Prime Minister is riding high on military gains while Tigray's leadership is unwilling to surrender.

"War is an epitome of hell. I know because I have been there and back," said Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed after he received Nobel Peace Prize last year.

Today, he is a wartime leader who is marching his troops into his own country. On Thursday, (November 12), Abiy claimed a major victory as his forces captured western Tigray. But this came at a high cost. The ethnic faultlines have re-emerged. There are reports of a massacre.

Hundreds of civilians, hacked to death by forces loyal to the regional leadership. If these reports are confirmed, this would amount to war crimes.

Abiy has promised a swift end to the fighting. A return to normalcy in no time. He has named a new local leader to oversee the transition.

"We are confident that in a relatively short period of time, we will accomplish our objectives and create a conducive environment for life to return to normalcy for our citizens in Tigray," said Ahmed.

But this is easier said than done. Tigray is a battle-hardy province. Its leader has vowed to fight till the end. Although he is putting up a brave front the Prime minister too is buckling down for the long haul.

In Addis Ababa, the government launched a civilian blood drive. Hundreds turned up to donate. The war is popular among non-Tigrayans.

But casualties are mounting. A long conflict could destabilise not just Ethiopia. But the larger, horn of Africa region.
